McCain Planning to Spend Time With ‘Joe the Plumber’

“I’m probably going to call him this morning," Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., told Fox News Channel’s Carl Cameron. "I thought he would probably be up late. I heard that his — that his phone lines were pretty well were flooded. But I think we’re going to be spending some time together.”

Interestingly, "Joe the Plumber" is not named Joe (his full name is Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher), and according to the Toledo Blade, he’s not a licensed plumber.

The Blade also reports: "Linda Howe, executive director of the Lucas County Board of Elections, said a Samuel Joseph Worzelbacher, whose address and age match Joe the Plumber’s, registered in Lucas County on Sept. 10, 1992.  He voted in his first primary on March 4 of this year, registering as a Republican. Ms. Howe said that the name may be misspelled in the database."

Additionally, in December 2007, the Blade reports, "the Ohio Department of Taxation placed a lien against him because $1,183 in personal property taxes had not been paid, but there has been no action in the case since it was filed."

Don’t worry Joe. Once we destroy you, you won’t have to pay any taxes.
You’ll be getting $5000 in welfare… hmmm I mean tax credits.

This guy is a FAKE and probably a McCain plant.
He is not even a licensed plumber. How the heck he thinks he can buy a plumbing business and work there is beyond me.
Either McCain is using him or this guy is an opportunist.

It’s slightly hilarious that the media is so feverishly vetting Joe The Plumber. Are they that scared he might turn this election in McCain’s favor…he’s just a voter who asked a question for godsakes…

Posted by: Jo | October 16, 2008, 3:24 pm 3:24 pm

My concern with the November election is in reference to a question Bob Shaffer asked each candidate during the debate on October 15th. The question was concerning each of their running mates for the vice presidency. Do they think they are qualified to lead the county if something should happen to each of them while they are president? Neither candidate was willing to give a direct answer to this question.
Although Senator Obama stated he believe Senator Biden will make an excellent candidate to run the county, Senator McCain was unable or unwilling to give an answer.

Why would McCain want to push this any farther? Can’t his campaign read enough comments to know that people got a little tired of it last night?
Joe does not make 250,000. He said on Good morning America that he was asked to go to the rally for Obama. TELL me this was not a PLANT to ask that question????
I will be so glad to get this election over with.
If McCain knows how to fix so much, why hasn’t he done something in the last 26 years?

I feel sorry for the guy. McCain is in full desperation mode, and he’s looking for any tool he can exploit. If I were Joe, I’d take a nice long vacation right about now.
We already know he’s a registered Republican, not a licensed plumber, a tax cheat, and lied about union membership on a facebook page. McCain needs to have mercy and not put him under the klieg lights.

and.. Joe says that he hates Social Security, even for his family.. and Joe says that he was sad to here that he was born in Toledo because that makes him a Yankee.. wow.. this is one Great American.. huh Hannity?

This goes to illustrate even more how out of touch McCain is if he thinks 250k a year is middle class.

Did anyone else notice that comments are starting to get to McCain, count how many times he said “my friends” last night compared to the last debate.
Hmmm

Posted by: make it known | October 16, 2008, 3:34 pm 3:34 pm

So Sen. McCain wants to make this imperfect laborer a “poster boy” for his tax proposals? It seems like his campaign has seized on yet another “theme of the week,” just like “lipstick on a pig,” “Ayers,” “ACORN,” and dozens of others, and probably with the same degree of success as his other themes.

Posted by: chuck | October 16, 2008, 3:36 pm 3:36 pm

Good for you, John McCain! Take Joe to your rallies and be sure and tell everyone that the media and Obama campaign launched personal attacks against him in order to divert attention away from Obama’s admission that he wants to “spread the wealth around” to everyone. Be sure and tell him about Obama’s and Biden’s derisive, dismissive remarks about him. Be sure and tell them that he’s even been branded a racist skinhead for daring to question and oppose Senator Government. This might also be the perfect opportunity to introduce your crowds to the topic of Frank Marshall Davis and his mentoring of Obama during his teen years.

Ah, yes, another thoroughly vetted gimmick from the McCain camp.
Poor Sarah. She’s so last month’s trophy plebe.

Posted by: Lettuce | October 16, 2008, 3:36 pm 3:36 pm

So Joe hates Social Security…and does not pay taxes anyway. And is already a registered republican. Can you say “stunt man”?
McCain does not want you to look at him or his proposals, he has to find someone else to make the campaign about or else he’ll lose!
McCain does not inspire people. He does not make you want to go out and vote for him. So he has to find a distraction. That’s what Palin was…that’s what this plumber is.
And the media is falling for it.
Get back to issues!

Posted by: Greg | October 16, 2008, 3:37 pm 3:37 pm

Wait a minute, he’s not a licensed plumber?
Joe’s county requires plumbers to have licenses.
Why has Joe the Plumber been telling all these lies?

Posted by: Dan | October 16, 2008, 3:37 pm 3:37 pm

I’ll say one thing for Joe: he’s held more press conferences than Sarah Palin!
And excuse me: how is this whole thing not a net positive for Obama? He engaged in a real and respectful conversation with a voter who disagreed with him. The exchange was civil and informative. Obama answered questions well, and didn’t blow the guy off, pander, or back off his core positions.

Posted by: beck | October 16, 2008, 3:40 pm 3:40 pm

I’m guessing the more John McCain’s campaign learns of “Joe the Plumber” the less they’ll want to latch on to this guy for political purposes.
Funny.

Posted by: Blue in Michigan | October 16, 2008, 3:40 pm 3:40 pm

Is McCain still going to spend time with the poster child for his comeback with the article in Bloomberg today that Joe the Plumber owes back taxes. A little rudimentary due diligence would have revealed a state tax lien before deciding to hang your campaign folks on a whining tax cheat.

Posted by: chris | October 16, 2008, 3:41 pm 3:41 pm

We can’t afford to have John McCain as president! Is it because or his policies? Not really. It’s because everything he touches turns to crap!
He chooses Palin to be his running mate and her star shines for about a week. She doesn’t bring the Clinton voters and the only folks she’s appealing to now are the base…..who McCain has anyhow.
He’s in a tight race and boom, Wallstreet crashes. He suspends his campaign to return to Washington to show himself a leader taking control and he can’t deliver the Republicans in congress for the bailout.
Now…. he’s tied his wagon to Joe the Plumber. Yep….Joe the plumber who isn’t making $250,000 a year. Joe the plumber who doesn’t have a plumbing license. Joe the plumber who owes the state of Ohio $1200 in back taxes and has a lien placed on his property.
To heck with policy, we can’t afford to have a president that is gonna screw up just because he gets up in morning! lol

Good grief, these men already know each other “Joe” Wurzelbacher is a relative of Robert Wurzelbacher, who is Charles Keating’s son-in-law (Hello. . .anyone remember this group???). That’s the connection. Its all a scam. “Joe” was a McCain camp plant. Didn’t anyone think it odd that “Joe” started on Obama just as a Fox News crew arrived?

Posted by: Waya | October 16, 2008, 3:42 pm 3:42 pm

I’m not interested in Joe or what he said – he isn’t running for President.
But the One who is gave a very insightful answer to Middle America Joe, all about punishing those who succeed by taking from those who work hard to become successful to give to those who choose not to.
After all, in Obama’s Land of Unicorns and Rainbows, that’s considered fair.
And did you catch it last night in the debate, where the $250,000 suddenly became $200,000? Was that a gaffe or a glimpse of things to come?

Posted by: marylou | October 16, 2008, 3:43 pm 3:43 pm

The Obama Left and their media attack dogs are intent on destroying Sarah, Trig and Bristol Palin along with Joe the Plumber, while at the same time they are doing their very best to promote and “mainstream” the despicable traits and actions of Bill Ayers and Rev. Wright.
This is really a fight for America and it’s values, and it is the main reason why I have completely disassociated myself from the rotten Left, after defending and promoting their vile for way too long.

An attack on Joe the Plumber is an attack on Middle America.
What part of that does the Left fail to understand?
Attack away! Joe is stating the fact that Obama’s tax plan takes away his incentive to start his own business and work hard to achieve success. It’s called killing the American Dream.

Ruh-roh, its look like McCain supporter Harry Sargeant may be in trouble for war profiteering.
You may remember Harry from earlier in the campaign when McCain had to return $50K in questionable donations bundled by Mr. Sargeant from people who seemed unable to financially swing the donations.
“A company that ships oil into Iraq for use by American forces there “appears to have engaged in a reprehensible form of war profiteering,” according to a letter by Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Cal., Chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. The company, International Oil Trading Limited, is run by Florida-based businessman Harry Sargeant, a top fundraiser for the presidential campaign of Senator John McCain.”
Country first? Not when there’s a buck to be made.

Residential plumbers don’t need a license there. Only commercial.
it is not going to be a positive to voters if Joe is demeaned and McCain defends him. it will only make Obama and his supporters look bad.
Keep it up…

In Nat’s world a common plumber trying to better himself is comparable to…
a domestic bomber, an anti-American preacher, and an organization that is under investigation for massive voter registration fraud and strong-armed banks to make home loans to people with no jobs, income, or assets.

Posted by: marylou | October 16, 2008, 3:54 pm 3:54 pm

So, now we have another McCain campaign obsession – Joe the plumber, and the media tags along for the ride. I am so over Joe. Let it go and move on.
But as one of the posts below mention, it is really very sad that Joe the plumber is able to stand up and take reporter’s questions (and follow ups, mind you) – you know, a press conference – and our vp candidate cannot. McCain said last night that he was proud of her (twice I think) like he was her dad or something. Very bizarre. The question was whether or not she could step in and be president. Sorry – revving up the base is not one of my top qualities in a VP. Can the press not even pretend to do its job anymore? She is the first VP candidate ever in the modern era to not have a press conference. This is unacceptable.

Posted by: Florida Republican | October 16, 2008, 3:55 pm 3:55 pm

Why doesn’t McCain just leave this guy alone? It seems like he’s done him enough damage – or maybe he’s making money off interviews. He isn’t quite who he said he was – but so what? If he had been telling the truth, his questions to Obama were reasonable.
But what I don’t get is where anybody gets off pretending that $250,000/year is middle class. About 2% of all American families make that amount. It doesn’t even relate to 98% of Americans. Only the well-off.

Posted by: mara | October 16, 2008, 3:56 pm 3:56 pm

Beck, the markets were up by 320 the last time I looked. I told a lady at church not to sell her 401k Monday because I had a feeling they would open up after Friday and then I worried all weekend. lol Thankfully they were up when they opened. I won’t be giving any more money advice.

Posted by: Maria | October 16, 2008, 3:56 pm 3:56 pm

Obama’s tax cut for the Joes and Janes who make up the middle class is 3 times that of what McCain would offer.
McCain’s tax cuts for the wealthy is no different than George Bush’s. It hasn’t worked for the last 8 and it won’t work for the next 4.
The saddest statistic I’ve learned in this election is that most of us are poor. In a country where we’re told we can all become rich, only 5% of us do.

His name is not Joe but Samuel Joseph? You’re kidding right?
And this isn’t about Joe having a license, its about Obama’s socialist plans…

Sounds like a plant from the Republican party to me! Owes back taxes, not a licensed plumber but wanting to know how much he would have to pay in taxes if he made over the 250,000, hates Social Security, etc. He sounds like someone I would want to be in my ads supporting me!! Goes along with that Half Baked Alaskan McCain has for his running mate!! Who, by the way, is just an embarrassement to the American people and a big joke with our foreign neighbors and also, we Americans. She can’t even do a decent interview and avoids talking to reporters, was found to abuse her power in Alaska, lied about so many other things. And McCain, he is just too darn old to be a leader of our country–did you notice him trying to hold his temper last night??? Please, Americans–vote for leaders we can be proud to call our leaders and that is Obama/Biden!!

Funny how the libs memory only goes back about 10 months…before this year I believe there were 53 months in a row of positive job creation, a direct result of the Bush tax cuts. Also a result of those tax cuts were record revenues taken in by the government, but why let facts get in the say of the annointed one taking his rightful place…

How is paying 3% more on high-end profits “destroying the American dream?” There is still 97% of the incentive as there was before. And we’re only talking about going back to 1990′s rates, when the economy was booming. If you think that should “destroy the American dream,” then it must be already destroyed.

Why does McCain not care about intellectual property rights?<<<
Because they have no legal right to stop him from playing their music at his events…that's why!
From an aricle on this huge controversy;
Musicians often have little control over how their music is used because of the system that licenses songs for public performance under a blanket fee paid by venues to ASCAP, the firm that collects royalties on behalf of composers and copyright owners.

This was a Fox News set-up. Joe is a dyed-in-the-wool Republican who spouts all the Republican talking points like the off shore drilling mantra. More dishonest theatrics. When we need substance McCain gives us fakery. Katie Couric interviewed Joe the plumber and he makes less than $250K and would not pay more under Obama’s plan. The story about buying the company he works for is false. For a key debate McCain used one of his own supporters to act as a prop. When you pull away the McCain curtain – it is all smoke and mirrors: Joe the Plumber and the Pit Bull with Lipstick. McCain is going down for good reason. Maybe Sarah and Joe the Plumber can run together on the next GOP ticket.

If Obama is elected, what are his chances of raising taxes on dividends, capital gains, corporations, inheritance, etc? Even with a Democratic Congress, he has little chance. In 2000, when George Bush repealed the inheritance tax, every single Republican voted to support him, along with 60 moderate Democrats in Congress. The South and West have Democratic Congressmen who are moderate, not liberals. These people have constituents who basically are conservative. They will not risk losing an election in their own districts by supporting increased taxes, especially on inheritance. As President, Obama will be singing the praises of high taxation from the Oval Office, and a good one-third of the Democrats will be voting against him. All hell will break loose in the Democratic Party – the liberals vs. the moderate Democrats from TN, AR, MT, SD, ND, KS, GA, FLA, AL, KY. I’ve lived in the south all my life. No way will Democratic Senators or House members vote for increased taxes on business, dividends or inheritance. It just won’t happen. I don’t want to see Obama elected, but on the other hand, it will be so sweet watching the two factions of the Democratic Party turn on each other!! I wonder if Obama will start calling the moderate Democrats racists when they don’t vote his way?

Jake, the important part of what you wrote is this:
“Ms. Howe said that the name may be misspelled in the database”.
This is in Ohio, where the Republicans are trying to get the election boards to prevent anyone from voting whose voter registration info doesn’t exactly match government databases (DMV, Social Security), even if it’s something as simple as a misspelling or missing middle initial.
If one randomly selected Joe has a problem with misspelling of his name in the database, how many more are there? And will they be prevented from voting and how might this affect the election?
There’s an important story here for any reporter who wants to pursue it. All the hoopla about ACORN is a smokescreen for the real danger of voter suppression and disenfranchisement.

Obama is proposing massive new spending programs and even tax refunds for those who pay zero taxes. In addition, we’re being crushed by massive debt. Anyone who believes that an extra 3% tax on the wealthiest Americans is going to pay for this – and that there will be no negative economic consequences given the current economy (in case you haven’t noticed, it isn’t “booming”) – is living in a dream world. When the 3% proves to be insufficient – and it will – it will mean tax hikes across the board.

This man did what all Americans are called upon to do — ask a question of a candidate in hopes of becoming more familiar with his positions on issues. What the media has done is look at every aspect of this man’s life to find a way to diminish him in some way. First, you people ask if he is even registered to vote, then you question his status as a licensed plumber, then you question the actual income of the business he hopes to buy, and then you search his records to see if he owes back taxes. All he did was ask a question for which many people are still hoping for an answer. By trying to “investigate” him as if he were the candidate, you miss the point. He represents every small business owner who wants to know if they’ll be postively or negatively impacted by the election of either Obama or McCain.

The absurdity of this all is that the right-winged sixpack folks will worship this Sam the Not Licensed Plumber icon, while most of us think he is a joker, a big mouth, or a republican plant.
Well, 2,5 weeks to go. It’s a nice story to end this crazy campaign. Today I had a good laugh because of Sam the Not Licensed Plumber. Tomorrow we should focus on the economy and the difficult issues again.

marylou,
I believe it is 200,000 for individuals and 250,000 for families.
I am guessing that unlike McCain, Obama knows his economic policies a bit better.
Also, if this guy is clearing 250k a year, then yes he should be taxed.
Obama’s plan only taxes small business if they make over 250k, not in sales, but in profit. And this is after any applicable deductions, so what else do you have???

Posted by: make it known | October 16, 2008, 4:26 pm 4:26 pm

Joe’s a liar and a fraud. How fitting to be the new “icon” of the McCain campaign. Of course, Joe does know something about taxes, as in not paying them.

Posted by: Sam | October 16, 2008, 4:27 pm 4:27 pm

Not only is he not a licensed plumber (another one of John McLame’s misleads), he owes back taxes and has a pending lien case against him, and, according to those on McLame’s staff, they knew this ahead of time as well as the fact that he is a member of Charles Keating’s family!

Posted by: durrs | October 16, 2008, 4:29 pm 4:29 pm

bkm – i just don’t think the media did it. i think john mccain did it. he could have used some generic example – but he didn’t. and this guy could have said no to interviews, but he didn’t. he also could have told the truth. the average salary of a plumber is about $50,000 a year. mccain used his misrepresentation to make it seem like all kinds of americans are going to hurt by obama’s plans. that’s just a lie. again, 2% of americans make $250,000 or over, including obama and mccain. but joe the plumber isn’t one of them – he’s just another example of the lies and sloppiness of the mcccain campaign.
by the way, i’m a small business owner. i sure wish i had $250K to complain about. i bet most small business owners do too. samuel doesn’t represent small business owners and mccain doesn’t care about the middle class.

jpt – How about reporting on this?
WashingtonPost
From Dana Milbank’s chat transcript:
I have to say the Secret Service is in dangerous territory here. In cooperation with the Palin campaign, they’ve started preventing reporters from leaving the press section to interview people in the crowd. This is a serious violation of their duty — protecting the protectee — and gets into assisting with the political aspirations of the candidate. It also often makes it impossible for reporters to get into the crowd to question the people who say vulgar things. So they prevent reporters from getting near the people doing the shouting, then claim it’s unfounded because the reporters can’t get close enough to identify the person.

“I believe it is 200,000 for individuals and 250,000 for families”
I think he was making a distinction between income tax and payroll tax.
Obama plans to raise income taxes for those making $250K+ from 35% to 39%.
He also has proposed a payroll tax of 2 to 4% on income above $200K (currently all income after $102K is payroll tax free)

oe: Tax cheat, unlicensed and Keating family member
October 16, 2008, 2:48PM
So, let me get this straight. Joe “the plumber” Wurzelbacher has no license to practice plumbing, has neglected to pay his taxes and is a relative of the Keating family. The first two points are largely irrelevant, though they will no doubt be studied by the media for hours. But the question the media should be asking is this: Is Wurzelbacher a McCain campaign plant, who was deliberately placed in Obama’s path in Ohio? And if so, what does this say about John McCain’s relationship with the Keatings, which he insists ended years ago? And if they say he wasn’t a plant, is this just too much of a coincidence to believe?

More of that right wing racism
The latest newsletter by an Inland Republican women’s group depicts Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama surrounded by a watermelon, ribs and a bucket of fried chicken, prompting outrage in political circles.
The October newsletter by the Chaffey Community Republican Women, Federated says if Obama is elected his image will appear on food stamps — instead of dollar bills like other presidents. The statement is followed by an illustration of “Obama Bucks” — a phony $10 bill featuring Obama’s face on a donkey’s body, labeled “United States Food Stamps.”
The GOP newsletter, which was sent to about 200 members and associates of the group by e-mail and regular mail last week, is drawing harsh criticism from members of the political group, elected leaders, party officials and others as racist.
The group’s president, Diane Fedele, said she plans to send an apology letter to her members and to apologize at the club’s meeting next week. She said she simply wanted to deride a comment Obama made over the summer about how as an African-American he “doesn’t look like all those other presidents on the dollar bills.”

“Picking” on an average American? He put himself there and the lack of credibility onus is on him. Nothing better than to get these dummies to look in a mirror: they can’t afford health care or to send their kids to college (and some even belong to taxpayer-run *cough–social programs-*cough cough). And then they all have McCain signs in their yards. Meanwhile, these Joe Schmoes vote on non-issues (guns? abortion? Can we say “Constitution,” and settled in 1973?) and ask stupid “what if?” questions that don’t even apply to them. He DOESN’T make $250,000 a year, and even if he did, the whopping $900 extra he’d owe on top of lien (hypocrite, much?) wouldn’t make a dent in a quarter million dollar income. I make less than $50, and even had to fork over $700 one year for claiming exemptions just so I could live month to month (and no lien here; $60 month stashed away, and I could pay the amount, no problem). So when these dummies go to the poll and vote for archaic, Jurassic, conservatives who cannot figure out the term “progression,” the rest of us will not hold our tongues anymore, since they are the very same who got us in this mess in the first place.

The latest Gallup Poll Daily tracking report from Monday through Wednesday shows Barack Obama with a 49%to 43% lead over John McCain among registered voters.
Gallup is presenting two likely voter estimates to see how preferences might vary under different turnout scenarios. The “expanded” model determines likely voters based only on current voting intentions. This estimate would take into account higher turnout among groups of voters traditionally less likely to vote, such as young adults and minorities. That model has generally produced results that closely match the registered voter figures, but with a lower undecided percentage, and show Obama up by six percentage points today, 51% to 45%.
The “traditional” likely voter model, which Gallup has employed for past elections, factors in prior voting behavior as well as current voting intention. This has generally shown a closer contest, reflecting the fact that Republicans have typically been more likely to vote than Democrats in previous elections. Today’s results show Obama with a two-point advantage over McCain using this likely voter model, 49% to 47%, this is within the poll’s margin of error. — Frank Newport

Yes, The bank which caused citizens to lose their life savings and cost U.S. taxpayers $3.4 billion. As part of that scandal, Robert Wurzelbacher pleaded guilty to three counts of misapplying $14 million and served 40 months in prison.

What all cynics should do is go out and buy the bigges Ouiji board you can buy.
2. Come together, hold hands, sing “THE FINAL COUNTDOWN” and pray for MCcain to get at least 190 electoral votes.
NOW THAT’S GOING TO BE A MIRACLE!!
This is going to be a massive blowout. McChicken will be sipping buttermilk singing row your boat.

Gosh, John McCain is going to have to do a better job vetting his plants and spend a little more money on better actresses to ask questions like “Is it true that Obama is an Arab?”. These obvious setups are an embarrassment to the republican party and to the intelligence of the American people. I can’t knock Joe the plumber for being behind on his taxes and medical bills, he is most likely struggling like the rest of us and looking for some means of a better future for himself and his family. John is just using Joe the plumber to further his agenda and is making Joe a laughing stock in the process. Surely, no matter what our political party, we don’t want a president that uses such tactics to gain a political advantage, you may be next!

Joe the Plumber’s father, Robert Wurzelbacher, pleaded guilty to three counts of misapplying $14 million in the KEATING scandal and served 40 months in prison.
Wurzelbacher was an executive of American Continental Corporation, the parent company of Charles Keating’s Lincoln Savings.
But there’s more: Wurzelbacher is Charles Keating’s son-in-law. Therefore our “Joe the Plumber”, Wurzelbacher’s son Sam, is related to Charles Keating.
What about that, Jake?
Here’s the NYT, December 13, 1993:
” A son-in-law of the former head of Lincoln Savings, Charles H. Keating Jr., must surrender next year to begin a 40-month prison sentence.
United States District Judge Mariana R. Pfaelzer imposed the sentence last week on the son-in-law, Robert M. Wurzelbacher Jr., who had pleaded guilty to three counts of misapplying $14 million from Lincoln, an Irvine, Calif., savings association.
Mr. Wurzelbacher, 39, was an executive with Lincoln’s parent, the American Continental Corporation, which Mr. Keating controlled.
Prosecutors asked for a six-year sentence, saying Mr. Wurzelbacher had volunteered little of use to them after making a plea bargain.
Mr. Wurzelbacher did not plead guilty to the indictment charging him and others, including Mr. Keating and Mr. Keating’s son, with looting Lincoln and swindling investors who lost money buying risky bonds. Instead, he admitted that he helped Lincoln extend loans to a hotel partnership in which he, Mr. Keating and other insiders had interests. He said he knew the loans were unlikely to be repaid.
And now his son has become Joe the unlicensed Plumber….

I don’t really care about Joe the Plumber. In fact, I’d prefer not to hear about Joe again. The 30 mentions in last night’s debate were more than sufficient. McCain is just using “Joe” as another gimmick. What does McCain plan to do if he’s elected? How does he plan to address the mess we’re in, especially if he plans to continue the same economic policies that have worked so well over the last 8 years?

Posted by: mary | October 16, 2008, 5:18 pm 5:18 pm

After watching the Final Presidential Debate last night, I was very interested in the “Joe the Plumber” saga. So I eagerly began to search the Internet in curiosity of what Joe actually wants. After listening to his conversation with Obama, I have come to conclusion that Joe had a more hypothetical and general question than I expected. Joe wants to know “if “he decides to become his own business owner, and “if” he began to make more than 250,000 dollars than “why” should he be taxed higher? Even though I feel that this is a no-brainer, my concerns and feelings are not so much as to “Why Joe must pay higher taxes” but why is Joe worried about something that has not come into play yet. He made an appearance on ABC News with Diane Sawyer in which he stated he does not make anything close to 250,000 dollars but hopes to in the future. This is an American Dream of 100% of the citizens in this country and worried about whether or not you have to pay taxes on this new found wealth is irrelevant to what Joe’s situation is right now. It seemed to me that Joe is leaning toward a vote for McCain. With this in tow, Joe needs to ask the question of “Which candidate has a plan that will allow him to create that dream job”. Joe needs to inquire about which candidate will reward him for creating that job in the USA that will bring a job to the guy down the street who is an experienced plumber but does not own the business. I hope that Joe fully understands that it is not initially about his long term goal of making 250,000 dollars a year but a short term goal of being able to create that business all together. GOOD LUCK JOE!!!

Obama hasn’t been pushing this the media has. Before little was talked about the meeting between Joe and OBama. The interview was even posted on Obama’s channel of his question and Obama’s answer. McCain for some reason brought him up during the debate. The scrutiny is because of John McCain not Barack Obama. Obama even gave Joe the benefit of the doubt if he wasn’t voting for him. But I guess McCain supporters like to be negative and cry foul for REGISTRATION FRAUD when every four years they commit VOTER FRAUD at the polls.

Posted by: Nat Turner | October 16, 2008, 5:23 pm 5:23 pm

Senator McCain, You Endorsed A Potential White Supremacist for Lieutenant Governor Of Alabama. Does This Make You A Racist?
This may be old news to some, but I just found out about it, so it’s new to me. Let’s see how many parallels this story has to the alleged Obama/Ayers link:
In the 2006 Alabama Republican Party primaries, John McCain actively campaigned for George Wallace Jr., the son of that one angry dude back in the 60s, when he was running for Lieutenant Governor Now, assuming Wallace doesn’t espouse the same views as his father….oh, wait a second…maybe he does…
McCain’s Alabama visit drew fire from the Democratic National Committee, which said McCain should have denounced past speeches Wallace has made to the “racist Council of Conservative Citizens (CCC),” a group which opposes “all efforts to mix the races” and advocates U.S. withdrawal from such organizations as the United Nations and the International Monetary Fund.
Don’t believe me? See their website. If you bother to look, you’ll find all sorts of goodies about racial integrity and states’ rights. They’re still ticked that Obama hasn’t released his birth records yet. Only, um, he has.
Wallace has given plenty of speeches to the CCC in the past, and has claimed that there “is nothing hateful about those people I’ve seen.” After this he likely said, “Oh, they referred to blacks as a ‘retrograde species of humanity’? No, they didn’t say that, and if they did, I repudiate it, and I also call on Senator Obama to repudiate Reverend Wright, even though it is 2006 and I really don’t know either of them.”
Oh, there’s this too:
The Birmingham News reported that in remarks at the reception, McCain praised Wallace as “a good and decent American” who wants to reform Alabama education and broaden the Republican Party’s base.
Sound familiar? Doesn’t Obama work on a board with another once-controversial figure who works in education reform?
Look, when this Ayers thing came up back in March, I was concerned (and Rev. Wright). But it’s been looked at quite thoroughly, and not much was uncovered then or now. It’s perfectly fine to ask questions about these things, but I am very, very annoyed to see that John McCain or Sarah Palin has not yet (to my knowledge) been asked a question about the Alaska Independence Party, the Annenberg Foundation, Thomas Muthee, John Hagee, the Keating Five scandal, or this.
So, Senator, let me ask, since I find it only fair: Can we trust you, someone who pals around with white supremacists, to really put country first? That is, are you a racist?

Posted by: What's up Sidney? | October 16, 2008, 5:23 pm 5:23 pm

Pardon me, but I think your grammar has got me confused. Didn’t you point blank ask if McCain planted him? I point blank answered, “Yes. And it backfired.” So what are you frustrated about?

Joe’s claim is stupid. Oh no! Poor “Joe” will have to pay 39% instead of 36%!!! But wait, he will also get a tax cut for health care and a capital gains cut. Whoops, the Republicans are wrong again!Anyway, why shouldn’t someone making 250K+ pay more than someone making 50K? How else do you republicans expect to pay for your Iraq War?

Posted by: Rev. Ike | October 16, 2008, 5:25 pm 5:25 pm

“Joe the Plumber” may regret the floodlight of attention that Senator McCain has shone on him. Even though Senator McCain was simply grasping at Joe in order to connect with average voters, any Joe who makes $250,000 is not average. I was offended by Senator McCain’s assumption and am further offended to find out this Joe owes back taxes.
Senator McCain may well regret the association based on the many comments Joe has made in the last 24 hours: Obama tap dances like Sammy Davis Jr., Social Security needs to be done away with, and the Iraq War was and is the right thing to do.

Obama says women should sign up for Selective Service
Even as the U.S. confronts two long wars, neither Sen. John McCain nor Sen. Barack Obama believes the country should take the politically perilous step of reviving the military draft.
But the two presidential candidates disagree on a key foundation of any future draft: Mr. Obama supports a requirement for both men and women to register with the Selective Service, while Mr. McCain doesn’t think women should have to register.

(or failure) what obama believes in is SOCIALISM. thats not america. he thinks HE and the government should decide how “much is too much profit”, and HE should be able to “distribute the wealth” equally. now im not going to get into all the details on here, but THATS why i cant vote for this guy. read the communist manifesto. this is EXACTLY what marxism is. and obama is very good and very careful at how he portrays his intentions, thats why you cant look at things at face value. its very sad, but this is what liberals do best. whatever sounds good has to be good.

Re: “why shouldn’t someone making 250K+ pay more than someone making 50K? How else do you republicans expect to pay for your Iraq War?
_ _ _
Right now, the top 5% (those making more than $153,542 — the group whose taxes Obama seeks to raise) pay 60% of all federal income taxes. Thirty percent of American voters pay nothing. About the “Republican” war, Obama’s VP pick Joe Biden authorized the war as did most Democrats. The only difference is how and when to get out.

Poor Tim. He doesn’t recognize that a good deal for the middle class 1) stimulates the economy and 2) is not “socialism” but fairness. Doesn’t that make requiring, by federal law, to carry car insurance “socialism”? If we have to insure our cars, why then, cannot we not come up with a viable way for the average taxpayer to afford health insurance for their bodies? This is not about you, but about the country; medical costs are rising, and people who become ill, injured, or maimed (including our own veterans) become the responsibility of the taxpayer. Period. So making life affordable by cutting taxes for the middle class (the rich are not suffering the consequences of this issue, thus they are only jumping up and down about not being able to afford a mortgage on their 3rd home or buying little Johnny a Honda instead of a Porsche. Heard of reality much?) benefits everyone. That is not a “left wingnut” idea, and most Americans are starting to realize this.

It doesn’t matter if if was Joe the Plumber or anyone else who asked Obama about taxes. What matters is what Obama said about raising taxes and spreading the wealth around. Why demonize Joe? Let’s look at the presidential candidate and his policies.

You must love the last 8 years then.
Oh, but what about all the govt buying of big parts businesses led by Republican President Bush and voted for by Senators McCain and Obama?
And how about that socialized healthcare we already have? You know, the kind where when you show up at an ER you get care—and the taxpayers pick up the tab?

Looking at the electoral landscape, there are seven must win states for McCain. Let’s go through them, shall we?
OHIO – Losing bad and falling further daily
FLORIDA – Are you serious? Don’t make me laugh.
Virginia – He’s down double digits already and it’s a RED STATE!
COLORADO – The place where Obama gives an historic speech and brings America together? McChicken = 0
Missouri – McChicken is fighting for his life. It’s neck and neck.
North Carolina – Elizabeth Dole is losing big. McCain will too.

Dear Mr. Light-headed:
Joe the Plumber is a plant. He asked Obama a question and McCain tried to steal the moment. McCain is the one with egg on his face, not Obama.
What’s funny is that Joe the Plumber is a relative of a Charles Keating associate – as in Keating 5. I smell a rat.
Furthermore, Obama is the one who is fighting for the working class. McCain and his rich wife and 7 houses don’t give a damn about them.

Jake;
Love your blog BTW. I think you are fairly balanced so can you answer this? I think some media outlets are going a bit overboard with this “Joe the Plumber” thing.
For example, the “he’s not a plumber”. Doesn’t he work as one, just doesn’t own the company? What are you guys really trying to say here.
Also, the tax situation, his voting and party affiliation. Is this all “fair game”? I don’t think you’ve gone overboard with this, but I’ve seen sites linking to this guy’s divorce court records and the like.
My problem with this is, all this guy did was ask a candidate a question that was bugging him. Is there a need to “expose” him? I fear that this type of activity by the media and bloggers (mainly) will scare people from asking questions to candidates.
I’d be interested in what you have to say that (in a blog post?). thx.

What is sad is the fact that John McCain is latching on to this Joe the plumber. There are millions of Americans that need help not just this one guy with a dream.McCain and his republican friends see this guy as the typical American that would vote for him so they are blowing it out of proportion. He picked a “garsh darnit” speaking governor to rally the bubba vote and joe may be a decent guy but that bald white head has a stereotypical feel that would make the monster truck drivers yell “yeah haw”! McCain’s rallies sicken me and the support he has is littered with trash and a one color only majority thinking that I find disgusting. That republican convention was a cowboy hat all white affair and DOES NOT represent the country we really are.We are better than that and hopefully this country will wake up from it’s drunken stupor and vote for the right president this time by voting for Barack Obama.

Before you decide to rip Joe the Plumber apart and invade his privacy because he has a different viewpoint, JAKE, you and your colleagues at ABC News would be wise to think twice. This guy did not ask for the attention he is getting. I’m pretty sure that his encounter with Obama was serendipitous. You all should be focussing on Obama’s reply to Joe’s concerns, concerns which are valid and shared by many Americans. Already we see Obama on the stump misrepresenting what transpired near Joe’s front lawn. Talk about that rather than trying to discredit yet another fellow American for his lingering concerns about a candidate who has received only superficial scrutiny by the mainstream media.

Posted by: jcarob | October 16, 2008, 6:15 pm 6:15 pm

“he was totally out of line with what he said though”
Not at all. Here’s what he said.
“As one who was a victim of violence and hate during the height of the Civil Rights Movement, I am deeply disturbed by the negative tone of the McCain-Palin campaign. What I am seeing reminds me too much of another destructive period in American history. Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin are sowing the seeds of hatred and division, and there is no need for this hostility in our political discourse.
“During another period, in the not too distant past, there was a governor of the state of Alabama named George Wallace who also became a presidential candidate. George Wallace never threw a bomb. He never fired a gun, but he created the climate and the conditions that encouraged vicious attacks against innocent Americans who were simply trying to exercise their constitutional rights. Because of this atmosphere of hate, four little girls were killed on Sunday morning when a church was bombed in Birmingham, Alabama.
“As public figures with the power to influence and persuade, Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin are playing with fire, and if they are not careful, that fire will consume us all. They are playing a very dangerous game that disregards the value of the political process and cheapens our entire democracy. We can do better. The American people deserve better”
Right wingers want to be able to cast their opponents in the most hateful of manners free from criticism.
There are consequences for whipping up hate.
And I am sure McCain was wounded by Lewis’s strong words. But those wounds are from the shame of allowing it to happen in the 1st place.

McCain is whipping up hate amongst his base because that’s all he has left in terms of campaign strategy, tearing Obama down.
What Lewis was saying is such tactics are inherently dangerous and that whackjobs take their cues from public officials encouraging hate.

It’s cheap, low-brow politics based on accusation and inuendo. McCain has sold what was left of his integrity to try and win an election.

Ryan C – you are talking about yourself and the obvious hatred you have for people who disagree with you.
One can point out that Ayers was/is a terrorist, because he openly admits it. What was Ayers line, “guilty as sin and free as a bird”.
It is the democratic party that has lost credibility. The constant yelling of racism when the secret service found on one yelling “kill him” in the audience. ACORN has flooded the registration system with illegal registrations and people have been caught voting on those registrations. Obama claims to have no connection with ACORN as his excuse – not believable.
The thug mentality of the democratic party is no reason to drop into name calling – even if Obama has encouraged his supporters to “street style” go out and gete in people’s faces.

Posted by: light headed Joe Biden | October 16, 2008, 6:40 pm 6:40 pm

Ryan c, Nobody is calling Obama a terrorist. Unlike you, who call anyone who opposes Obama a “racist”. Think about it. If the boot had been on the other foot and McCain’s political career had been launched by an abortion clinic bomber; his mentor for 20 years had been a White Supremist Pastor, and he had paid nearly a million dollars to far-Right militias who strong-armed voters into fraudulent registrations would you vote for him? Of course not.
That is why anyone with an ounce of common sense understands that character and judgment count when it comes to judging the qualifications of a candidate for President. Obama’s good character and judgment are called into question due to his collaboration with Ayers, an unrepentant terrorist; Rev. Wright, Obama’s Pastor for twenty years who preached the creed of black liberation theology; Rezco, one of Obama’s biggest campaign contributors and a convicted felon; and ACORN, now under investigation for voter fraud.

Posted by: metaphor | October 16, 2008, 6:41 pm 6:41 pm

ACORN is connected with Obama in ways that he cannot hide, and long term. He has been caught in lies about his connections to this organization. This and other falsehoods are now coming out, like his connection the Bill Ayers, his connection to Farakahn, and others in the subversive and criminal category. His denials of association with these people have been proven beyond a doubt. This makes the man a liar. It also makes him a devious cheat and theif.
From now on Obama has no credibility. No matter what he or his surrogates say about any issue, including Joe the Plumber, his sincerity and honesty will be questioned. He did it to himself.

For all you enamored with Obama’s pledges on taxes: remember Clinton 93?
“Seeking to explain why he is backtracking on a campaign promise to cut taxes for the middle class, President-elect Bill Clinton said Thursday that the plan was never a major theme in his race for the White House.
Mr. Clinton, speaking at a news conference a day after saying he would have to “revisit” his tax-cut plan, said Americans voted for him because of the “big things” he wanted to do.
The middle-class tax cut, he said, was not among them.
He said he was “absolutely mystified” that the news media had perceived it as a major pledge. In interviews Wednesday, Mr. Clinton said that, because of worsening deficit projections,”I have to put everything back on the table.”"
Hope that doesn’t happen…

Bingo! Joe was a “plant”, a magnet, and he’s a ventriloquist. Obama felt a magnetic pull to go into Joe’s neighborhood, where Joe was planted to ask the question about taxes that Obama didn’t actually respond by saying it was good to “spread the wealth around”, rather it was actually Joe throwing his voice. There has been a second action filed in one of them. More to come I am sure. Smile – McCain will probably pay all charges for him. Especially since McCain has decided Joe the Plumber is now one of his key themes. This gentleman is a registered Republican. Joe is no knowledge about tax plans of the two candidates. So he starts throwing negative punches and all the independents run screaming to the other side. Rev. Ike, I do not care about Ayers either but I do care about the fact Obama choose Ayers as his friend and than lied about the nature of his relationship with Ayers. Obama said Ayers “was just a guy in my neighborhood” when in fact Obama’s relationship with Ayers goes back as far as fifteen years ago.
Obama served on two foundations with Ayers. As chair of the Annenberg challenge that Ayers founded, Obama funneled thousands of dollars to Ayers’s anti-American school projects that as One such teacher taught; ‘The submission to Western civilization and its most outstanding offspring, American civilization, is, in reality, surrender to white supremacy.’ which is an echo of what Obama’s Pastor of twenty years taught.
The fact is anyone with an ounce of common sense should care about Obama’s relationship with Ayers, the fact Obama lied about it, and the fact Obama appears to support many of Ayers’s radical ideas. I know for sure that I would never even shake the hand of a person who as on 9/11 was quoted as saying “I wish I could have done more” in reference to his bombing of the Pentagon and other bombings.

Posted by: tim | October 16, 2008, 7:04 pm 7:04 pm

If Obama had any common sense or good judgment he would not have hung out with terrorists, communists and crooks. Obama has no substance. Obama is al about the same old same old lefty mantra of class war fare based on confiscating wealth from American business, the job producers, and handing it over to a bloated and corrupt bureaucracy. What people do not seem to understand is what ever you tax you get less of. All of Obama’s TRILLION dollar spending plans are based on raising the taxes of American business and when American business crumbles and fails under the weight of Obama’s higher taxes, there will be zero taxes to pay for all of Obama’s government give away programs.

He’s message is in a pretty package, but once it is opened and looked at it is filled with socialistic programs and added government control. He has ties to people who are anti America and the left wing media just tries to sweep this under the rug…

The Village Voice reports that Sarah and Todd Palin might have received kickbacks from the contractors who were awarded the contract for $12.5 MILLION sports complex and hockey rink in Wasilla.
Todd Palin told Fox News that he built the two-story, 3,450-square-foot, four-bedroom, four-bath, wood house himself, with the help of contractors he described as “buddies.” As mayor, Sarah Palin blocked an effort to require the filing of building permits in the wide-open city, and there is no public record of who the “buddies” were.
This smells a lot like moose manure that Palin’s rule in Alaska is so famous for.
There should be a serious investigation to find out whether Sarah and Todd Palin got a free house built for them as a favor by the contractor buddies who were given the $12.5 million sports complex contract, bypassing the usual bidding process.

Obama can’t defend his socialist “…and I think when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody” remark so it’s damage control time. Therefore, the campaign sends out attack-dog Biden…..
Problem #1: Biden conveniently ignore the fact Wurzelbacher told Obama he wants to buy a COMPANY that makes more than $250,000 a year. That’s different from saying Wurzelbacher, rather than the company, would make $250k a year.
Problem #2: Biden uses the word “cling” – a sure reminder to voters of Obama’s April reference to working-class voters who “…get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”
Problem #3: Biden’s response is a transparently standard attack-mode straight out of the dirty tricks playbook – if it’s true, obfuscate and attack…..even if you’re attacking a middle-class working guy who’s simply talking about his desire to someday buy a business and move ahead in the world. It’s disgusting.
Prediction #1: Opponents will further make accusations that Wurzelbacher is an evil Republican plant who somehow mind-melded with Obama and forced him to come to his neighborhood, near his house and wait for him to stop playing ball with his son and hold a discussion with him.
Prediction #2: As usual, Biden’s attack on this everyman will equally help McCain and hurt Obama. Just what the voters want to see – a politician attacking the little guy who dares to dream the American dream.
Way ‘ta go, Joe. Again.

This is one of the few times that Obama has failed to hit a softball question out of the park …
Explaining and defending the concept of progressive income taxes should not be a difficult response to Joe’s question.
With their small business and individual tax and financial incentives, the Obama campaign should be making political hay from this question … instead of letting McCain put them on the ropes over ‘income redistribution’
At least they could if the plans were actionable.

I think what is going to come out tomorrow that the story about people yelling “terrorist” and “kill him” was a fake. Secret service takes these things quite seriously and they did not see or hear any of it – nor did any one else.
There was the story the other day about secret service visiting a couple who argued with an ACORN worker on the phone – saying they would never vote for Obama. ACORN apparently called it in as a deth threat and the secret service was on them. Turns out they said that they would never support a criminal enterprise like ACORN.

re light-headed Joe
Actually, the question about whether there were death threats has aired several times today.
Don’t know whether it was said or not
Don’t know whether it was heard by Palin or not.
But it would be really easy for McCain and Palin to get up in front of a microphone and tell folks that their campaign does not sanction, encourage, or condone those kinds of comments … that even rumors of them hurt the credibility of their campaign.
I thought that McCain missed a chance to quell the noise about this on last nights debate and to show the leadership that he is capable of.

There is no name-calling on my end–go through the posts.
Second, education is the most vital resource for keeping this country pulsating,to moving forward (not non-issues), and Bush/the Republican administration of the last 8 years has done the most damage to the system in the last 40 years than any other party. No Blackmail Left Behind defeated its entire purpose; the drop-out rate in this century is higher than any other; billions cut for student loans, public education programs. And neither candidate is really putting forth an answer to that one.
Not too mention wasting trillions of taxpaper dollars on the Iraq invasion/ attempt at colonization. It’s a failure, and if everyone would get over “it would be disrespectful to the dead to surrender” and realize on one hand “Mission Accomplished” as in Bush got his man, and start getting out so that we can reconstruct our infrastructure with our own people and money, we could move on. Become independent and rebuild our name.
But keeping the Bush Doctrine Caboose chugging via a doddering 72-year-old man and his ignorant (hypocritical) sidekick isn’t going to cut it. So thank the sweet corn on earth that McCain tried to pull this stunt today–it just hurt his chances of keeping that failure train running.

Obama should have handled Joe’s question the way FDR would have. We need work on the infrastructure of America. One thing that would be good is bringing enlightenment (OK I am pandering to the left here) to the masses by installing Internet access all across America. OK, the bridges and roads need it first. Lets talk about some programs that help every one. There is no winning an argument that is based on redistributing working people money.
To the plumber he should have said, I would like to replace all water heaters with tankless unit to save energy.

The Keating 5 Scandal was aweful. The failure of Lincoln Savings & Loan cost taxpayers millions of dollars. And John McCain was at the center of it.
He was one of the Keating 5.
Now he wants to save the taxpayers money? I guess his guilt is getting to him.
I am a recovering Republican and he will never get my vote.

Obama talked to Joe for 5 minutes while canvasing in Ohio. Unprompted “Joe” asked Obama a question. Obama answered. The neighborhood cheered. I guess a lot of people liked Obama’s response…. just not Joe the plumber, who doesn’t like to pay taxes (even social security).

Posted by: MM | October 16, 2008, 8:12 pm 8:12 pm

Sure. Then let’s give everyone a hybrid car and call it good. That’s not my point at all.
Removing No Child, reinstating government loans for higher education, and paying teachers more and having smaller classrooms (8 years wasted already– that’s 2 high careers across the entire U.S., wasted) will jumpstart the horrible conditions of our education system. If McCain is in office, everyone will grumble, drop their shoulders, and try to get by as usual.
Taxes: cut ‘em for the middle class so that they can get working toward affording health care. Anyone making $250,000 or more has relative worries at that juncture. They are not being punished; the rule is simple: the more you make, the more you owe to the feds. This isn’t new.
Last, this whole Joe Schmoe crap is getting attention because it’s another failed attempt on McCain’s part to jilt the public. Got caught. Plain and simple. As for Joe, he’s an idiot; anyone who goes on national television ought to know that everyone can see him and hear what he says. No sympathy there.

“1) You assume that Obama has the character, honesty and judgment to spend the taxes he confiscates from American business wisely.”
Are all taxes confiscated or just Obama’s taxes?
“(2) No business making less than $250,000 will have any incentive to grow and create new jobs because if they do they will be punished by higher taxes.”
We have a progressive tax system and have had one for decades. When you hit a certain level, you are taxed at a higher rate. Obama proposes raising the highest rate from 35% to 39%. If you think someone will stop working because they will be taxed an extra 4% on money they make above $250K, you are not very bright.
“(3) American businesses earning over $250,000 will be crippled by Obama’s higher taxes and unable to compete in the world wide market and most likely fail and go out of business or move to greener pastures taking all of the jobs with them.”
4% is a crippling tax? ROFLMAO.
What do you think of McCain taxing my employer provided health care then? That must be the end of the world.
We have to fix the education system in this country. Too many gullible and stupid right wingers running around.

Obama surprised Plumber Joe’s neighborhood–and voluntarily answered Plumber Joe’s question. Nothing more than proving Obama is a socialist and we have a choice to vote for this. Like the media never knew who the Governor of Alaska was or the middle American worker is most concerning.

Posted by: bebe | October 16, 2008, 8:51 pm 8:51 pm

Joe the Plumber doesn’t get it either. We’ve been giving the wealthy and large corporations tax breaks for the last eight years, and look where it’s gotten us. Giving tax breaks to the wealthy only works for the wealthy. It DOESN’T trickle down. I don’t think middle class folks mind working hard. I don’t think we mind paying a FAIR SHARE in taxes. But give middle class and poor folks extra income, and where do we spend it? In our communities, enriching local businesses, just like Joe the Plumber’s. When people are spending money in their home towns, the town benefits with a better tax base to be spent on education, infrastructure, etc. Just simple middle class economics 101.

Here’s Something to Think About
All along the distribution line, there are taxes. Our suppliers will have their taxes go up, we will have our business’s taxes go up, our customers’ taxes will go up.
If you’re not making at least $250,000, you can’t make it in our area. It’s not worth the trouble or the risk. Our state taxes are high and may be going up.
The whole tax package will come in at about 60%. That’s not only wrong, it’s dumb.
That giant sucking sound is hard-earned money being siphoned out of the economy into the hands politicians so they can buy votes.
Talking about contributing to our own demise–and digging our own grave.

I find it funny how Republicans have “Joe” and working shlubs like him fooled into carrying water for the rich.
Good luck all to all of you on getting your 250K+ salary, look at the labor statistics, its a pretty exclusive club and my bet is most of you will never make that kind of money in your lifetime.
Vote for your own interests not the rich mans interests, vote for the candidate that is going to do the most for you. That is what the rich do and that has a lot to do with why they are rich.
Typical rich man whining, Obama want’s to raise their taxes about 3%-9% on graduated income over 250K and they are acting like its the end of days. That amounts to nothing more than walking around money for them.
Since it was the rich who put Bush in office they should be taxed to pay for all the opportunities and calamity it has caused in America right now.

McCain, please do not flush your campaign in the toilet. Joe the Plumber is no ordinary American. He has dodged his taxes, plus two liens. The Huffingpost has tracked his relationship/connection to Charles Keating
McCain makes these quick decision, and repeats words as if little kids are listening. It would have been enough if he had moved to serious issues affecting America’s economy than repeat over 24 times Joe the Plumber. Gone, gone is Joe Six Packs who no longer afford beer.

Sandy wrote, “maybe this guy didn’t lose the election for obama when he forced Obama to answer TRUTHFULLY that he’s a socialist.”
Here is my take. You don’t get it. McCain is the one promoting fascism and socialism by saying that $300 billion dollars from taxpayers should buy messed up mortgages. This is not fair for some of us who chose not to take subprime loans and are paying on a monthly basis sacrificing the life of luxury in America. I will also default mine, so McCain’s government can rescue me with his plan. That is socialism, baby…. spreading our wealth in McCain’s way.

Posted by: Jane | October 17, 2008, 1:31 am 1:31 am

Joe the Plumber is a victim of McCain’s desperation in the road to the White House. At least, he can be paid by a talk show or McCain’s campaign that is using his likeness in ads. This will make him afford to pay for his apprenticeship, plumber license, liens etc. He just struggles like any other American under Bush. McCain should face reality that NOT all Republicans make over $250,000 as Joe the Plumber demonstrates. Will fees for plumbing licenses or contractor licenses be lowered under McCain, or he wants them to create wealth without caring how much they got there. VOTE WISELY.

On the day after Mr Wurzelbacher’s name came up in the debate, the US media dug into his background and discovered that he is a registered Republican, and that in 2007 the state of Ohio was forced to claim $1,182.98 in unpaid taxes from him.
A search of the register of plumbers in Ohio also revealed that Mr Wurzelbacher does not have a state plumber’s licence.

Posted by: scot | October 17, 2008, 1:52 am 1:52 am

Well, this appears to be just another example of McCain jumping in without thinking. First it was the Sarah Palin pick, then it was “suspending” his campaign, now it’s glorifying this guy Joe, who’s not really a plumber, earns about $40,000 a year, and as it happens will be BETTER off under Obama’s tax plan.
McCain is running an abysmal campaign. I wouldn’t trust him to run a bath, let alone a country.

McCain War Profiteering
The Democratic chairman of a House investigative committee presented documents to the Pentagon on Thursday alleging that a top Republican fund-raiser, Harry Sargeant III, has made tens of millions of dollars in profits over the last four years because his contracting company vastly overcharged for deliveries of fuel to American air bases in Iraq.
Mr. Sargeant, who is the finance chairman of the Florida Republican Party and a major fund-raiser for Senator John McCain, did not immediately return several messages left for him on Thursday, but in the past he has denied any improprieties on the part of the the company, International Oil Trading Company, known as I.O.T.C. [...]
Mr. Sargeant is one of several dozen people who are listed on Senator McCain’s web site as raising $500,000 or more for him. He was the host of a fundraiser for Mr. McCain at his mansion in Delray Beach, Fla., this year.
Sargeant, you may remember, is the McCain bundler who managed to get donations for McCain from some very unlikely sources:
The bundle of $2,300 and $4,600 checks that poured into Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign on March 12 came from an unlikely group of California donors: a mechanic from D&D Auto Repair in Whittier, the manager of Rite Aid Pharmacy No. 5727, the 30-something owners of the Twilight Hookah Lounge in Fullerton….
Some of the most prolific givers in Sargeant’s network live in modest homes in Southern California’s Inland Empire. Most had never given a political contribution before being contacted by Sargeant or his associates. Most said they have never voiced much interest in politics. And in several instances, they had never registered to vote. And yet, records show, some families have ponied up as much as $18,400 for various candidates between December and March…..

McCain’s “Joe the plumber” is fitting. Liddy, the Watergate burglar/murder plotter, was also a plumber?

Joe did not seek out Obama.
Obama sought out Joe.
And now the press is trying to destroy Joe. That’s fabulous.
We know more about Joe than we do about Obama.
We find out about Joe’s tax liens here, but not that Obama’s treasurer has tax liens, or that Obama’s Finance Chariman is the Queen of the SubPrime mortgages, which brought to the precipice of calamity.
We know all about Joe, but we still don’t know how Obama got into Columbia or Harvard, or his grades, or even his medical record.
