McCain Seizes on Obama’s Tax Plan Tweak

ABC News’ Teddy Davis, Bret Hovell and Julia Hoppock Report: John McCain is seizing on an ABC News report about Barack Obama tweaking his tax plan to argue that his Democratic opponent will "say anything to get elected."

"This week we learned that Senator Obama is concerned that his plan of wealth redistribution is seen as welfare," McCain said Thursday morning in Ormond Beach, Florida. "So he just added a work requirement. Twelve days to go, thirteen days to go in this election he changed his tax plan because the American people have learned the truth about it and they didn’t like it."

McCain’s latest criticism of Obama refers to comments made Tuesday by Obama adviser Austan Goolsbee at the Council on Foreign Relations. The University of Chicago professor said that the Obama campaign changed a minor component of its tax plan to avoid criticism that it was tantamount to welfare. He made his comments while debating Douglas Holtz-Eakin, McCain’s top policy adviser.

While Obama did tweak his tax plan, McCain is overlooking that the only aspect of the Obama plan that changed was the universal mortgage credit.  Obama’s other refundable tax credits were already work-related including his make-work-pay credit, saver’s credit, child-care credit, and college credit.

In his new line of attack, McCain overstates the degree to which Obama’s tax plan was altered. The work requirement articulated by Goolsbee on Tuesday might end up excluding fewer than 1,000 otherwise eligible Americans from claiming Obama’s universal mortgage credit, according to an Obama campaign estimate.

The minimal impact is because the work requirement could be met simply by having worked in the last taxable year or by having a spouse who works.

While Obama’s campaign could legitimately complain that McCain is overstating the degree to which the Democratic tax plan changed, the Obama campaign decided to put out a statement which overlooks what its own economic adviser told the Council on Foreign Relations on Tuesday.

"All of Senator Obama’s tax credits only go to workers and they always have," the Obama campaign said in a statement e-mailed to reporters.

The truth is that when Obama originally outlined his refundable tax credits — the vast majority of them went only to workers.

But there was one refundable tax credit — the universal mortgage credit — which did not have an explicit work requirement on it which meant that it was theoretically possible for a very small number of Americans to get a check from the government under an Obama proposal even though they were not working.

"They started saying this was welfare," Goolsbee told the Council on Foreign Relations.  "So, just so they would absolutely not be able to say that, we decided that for the last two percent we’ll simply add a work requirement."

"When did this change? I’m just curious," an incredulous Holtz-Eakin asked Goolsbee.

"About two weeks ago," replied Goolsbee, adding that when the proposal was announced in September 2007, 98 percent of its benefits went to workers.

Watch it HERE.

After speaking to the Council on Foreign Relations on Tuesday, Goolsbee argued in an interview with ABCNEWS.com that he was not referring to a policy change but rather a change in what the Obama campaign decided it needed to make explicit. Goolsbee said the Obama campaign always assumed that every American would know that any new refundable tax credit would be tied to work because the refundable tax credits in current law are work related.

The purpose of Obama’s 10 percent universal mortgage credit is to aid taxpayers who do not itemize when filing taxes. The Obama campaign estimates that it would provide an average of $500 to 10 million homeowners, the majority of whom earn less than $50,000 per year.

While McCain has hammered Obama’s refundable tax credits as constituting welfare, the Republican nominee has proposed a refundable tax credit to help Americans pay for health insurance which does not have a work requirement — it would benefit all Americans regardless of whether they are working or not.

User Comments

Let me get this straight – Obama’s “tax credits” are considered “welfare” while McCain’s are considered “reform”? Does McCain think his voters are that stupid?
McCain is proposing refundable tax credits of up to $2,500 a year for individuals, or $5,000 for families, as part of his health care plan.

Plenty of people have been scratching their heads over Joe Biden’s warning to voters that electing Barack Obama would precipitate an international crisis to “test his mettle”. Investors Business Daily agrees with Biden, and notes that this wasn’t an off-the-cuff gaffe; Biden repeated the warning in two different venues. IBD points to an early Obama campaign video, in which Obama pledges unilateral disarmament on several fronts, as evidence supporting Biden’s hypothesis.
But there’s another angle to this, based on what Biden the senator knows — that Obama’s defense policies, once it’s obvious how they’ll undermine us, are likely to be very, very unpopular. In this case, Biden may be calling on his party’s hard, pacifist core — Moveon.org, Code Pink and the like — to stand by their man.
He’ll need their support. Like Jimmy Carter in the 1970s, Obama’s policies often sound good on the surface, but will in fact materially weaken America’s ability to defend herself. That’s not just our opinion, mind you; it’s straight from the horse’s mouth.
Such policies will create a vacuum that our foes will be only too happy to exploit.
In response to seeing a weakling in the White House, will Russia do something rash in Eastern Europe, like invade Ukraine? Will Putin put troops, missiles, or maybe nukes in Venezuela? Will South Korea develop a bomb, knowing the U.S. won’t stop it? Will Iran attack Israel, as it has promised, thinking America has become a paper tiger? We don’t know, but maybe Joe Biden does.
I think Biden wanted the Left to remain activist to support a retreat philosophy in the face of aggression from our enemies. Obama has consistently fronted that policy, in Iraq and elsewhere, both as a Senator and as a presidential candidate.
Biden knows Obama will need the Left to support the consequences of its Kucinich vision for American foreign policy.

Perhaps thanks to Joe “born with a silver foot in his mouth” Biden the Obama campaign has learned the importance of making sure comments and such are stated accurately and clearly so as to aviod a many blunders as possible.

I don’t even listen to McCain or Palin anymore. History as far as I am concerned.
McCain will say and do anything to get you to vote for him. Sounds familiar.. it should, Bush did the same thing. McCain will get into office and be out on the golf course the next day. To heck with us and our issues.

Here is a creative approach to redistribution of wealth.
Today on my way to lunch I passed a homeless guy with a sign the read ‘Vote Obama, I need the money.’ I laughed.
Once in the restaurant my server had on a ‘Obama 08′ tie, again I laughed–just imagine the coincidence.
When the bill came I decided not to tip the server and explained to him that I was exploring the Obama redistribution of wealth concept. He stood there in disbelief while I told him that I was going to redistribute his tip to someone who I deemed more in need–the homeless guy outside. The server angrily stormed from my sight.
I went outside, gave the homeless guy $10 and told him to thank the server inside as I decided he could use the money more. The homeless guy was grateful.
At the end of my rather unscientific redistribution experiment I realized the homeless guy was grateful for the money he did not earn, but the waiter was pretty angry that I gave away the money he did earn even though the actual recipient deserved money more.
I guess redistribution of wealth is an easier thing to swallow in concept than in practical application.
OR IS IT………REDISTRIBUTION OF SOMEONE ELSE’S WEALTH IS A GREAT IDEA…………..or just a fool’s political game !!

I’m still trying to figure out how John McCain can get away with emphatically saying that terrorists will not test him if he’s President. How pompous & arrogant can you be? Just who in the hell is John McCain to where terrorists would just quake in their boots at the mere sight of him? So had he been the commander-in-chief on September 11, 2001, those planes wouldn’t have crashed into those buildings in NYC? Terrorists would not have tried to fly a plane into the Pentagon(a plan thwarted by some REAL heroes might I add). Again here’s another quote that was not read in its entirety. Biden was suggesting that anyone who takes that office will face this challenge. How senile must McCain be to think these animals will run scared of him. Why would they be afraid of him? What experience does he have that would deter a terrorist? Sure he was a POW, but doesn’t that suggest that he got CAPTURED!!! Someone needs to remind the GOP presidential candidate that his name is John McCain, not Lucas McCain. Lucas McCain was a bad boy on “The Rifleman”. John McCain is not even close.

Seriously, this constant change in the tax plan from whence Obama ran against Hillary vs now has shifted from the very very very far left to increase his original suggestion of >$100,000 per family income to >$250,000 and amongst others. Is this really a surprise that it changes again since he’s changed it so often? Even is camp has said that they’ll say anything now and fix it later once he goes into office (I am not kidding)… but of course it’s not something people pick up on.
With all the plans he has to increase in spending and the universal healthcare… and for Barney Frank to say on Monday, “At this point there needs to be a focus on an immediate increase in spending I believe later on there should be tax increases. Speaking personally I think there are a lot of very rich people out there whom we can tax at a point down the road that would cover some of this money.”
Does anyone really believe there will be a true tax cut for the middle income? Or perhaps they’ll just hike the high income to 60% and leave the middle income and low income alone? And really… what is Obama’s TRUE definition of rich? Is it “$100,000″ as originally suggested or the now “$250,000″. All this change is ridiculous.
And seriously, Palinforporn… and if she wears clothing that you suggest, then your group will call her whitetrash. I wonder why Obama’s outfits are expensive. palin is the poorest candidate… there… comes from TRUE blue collar working class who has accomplished. Your Obama is an elite who hangs out w/his Eastcoast elitist and his Hollywood Elitist while putting down middle america. And you don’t call that elitist? A plumber asks a question of him, and his socialist answers made people see him for who he is, and now he and his gang makes fun of Joe th plumber… and you don’t see that as an elitist?
Obama says that mcCain fights for “joe the hedgefund manager” when it’s Obama who has been receiving the most of the money from the “hedgefund” manager. Get real.
Your comment makes me think that you are a woman… b/c I don’t think men are that petty. But for a woman to come up w/a name such as “palinforporn”… you’ve been hanging around the wrong crowd for way too long that your head is not screwed on right.

Okay, we have to guys trying to do what they can to get into the most powerful office in the world. Yeah, they are going to … mislead. I think lie might be little over the top. They will twist the facts the way they want them to look. The ones that worry me the most are the reporters and how they turn all this into a big drama party. And yes, we all feed on it. To this story’s core they are making a big deal out of a small turn of phrases. What does bother me is the experience issue. Now folks say McCain should not have picked Palin because of experience. Yes that might be true, but then you have Joe Biden poke’n that foot in his mouth all the time. Now if Joe is right about Obama being tested, then we will probably be in trouble. I think Bush screwed the pooch before 09/11. Still if we play off the comments Joe stated according to Obama, then did Obama make a good choice. So now you have to, literally, pick the lessor of 2 evils. I thought this back in 2000 with Gore and Bush.

The Wall Street Journal
Obama’s Tax Plan Is Really a Welfare Plan
Barack Obama’s tax plan is the opposite of supply-side economics. He proposes to raise marginal rates for just about every federal tax. He also proposes a raft of tax credits that taxpayers can receive if they engage in various government-specified activities.
Moreover, the tax credits would mostly go to those who pay little or nothing in federal income taxes. His trick is to make the tax credits “refundable.” Thus, if the tax credit is for $1,000, but the taxpayer would otherwise only pay $200 in taxes, the government would write a check to the taxpayer for $800. If the taxpayer pays nothing in federal income taxes, the government would pay him the whole $1,000.
Such credits are not tax cuts. Indeed, they should be called The New Tax Welfare. In effect, Mr. Obama is proposing to create or expand a slew of government spending programs that are disguised as tax credits. The spending on these programs is then subtracted from the total tax burden, in order to make the claim that his tax plan is a net tax cut overall.
On the tax side of the ledger, the details released by his campaign last week confirm what a President Obama has in mind for our most productive citizens. The top individual income tax rate, for example, would be increased by 13%, to 39.6%; the next-highest rate would be raised to 36%. The top rates on capital gains and dividends would rise by a third, to 20%
The Social Security payroll tax would be raised between 16% to 32% for families making over $250,000 a year. This means that the real returns these people get from their lifetime payments into the retirement program will be driven below 0%, according to my own previous research, which was published by the Cato Institute and elsewhere.
Mr. Obama also wants a permanent federal estate tax, with a top rate of 45%; his health-insurance plan includes a new payroll tax on employers; and he also contemplates several increases in the corporate income tax, including a new so-called windfall profits tax on oil companies.
Then there is the spending side of the ledger. Mr. Obama proposes a fully refundable Making Work Pay Tax Credit, which would have the government pay out $500 to each worker and $1,000 to couples — reminiscent of George McGovern’s 1972 election proposal for the government to send a $1,000 check to everyone.
His American Opportunity Tax Credit would provide a $4,000, fully refundable tax credit for college tuition expenses. His Mortgage Interest Tax Credit would provide a 10% credit — refundable — to offset mortgage interest payments for lower- and middle-income families. His Health Care Tax Credits, which the campaign says “will ensure that health insurance is available and affordable for all families,” include “a new refundable 50 percent health tax credit on employee premiums paid by employers.”
Currently existing tax credits would also become spending programs in the Obama tax program. The Savers Credit would be made fully refundable, and would be expanded, according to the campaign, “to match 50% of the first $1,000 of savings for families that earn under $75,000.” The Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit would be made refundable and expanded to allow “low-income families to receive up to a 50 percent credit on the first $6,000 of child care expenses.”
The Earned Income Tax Credit is already refundable. Mr. Obama would expand it to “increase the number of working parents eligible for EITC benefits, increase the benefits available to noncustodial parents who fulfill their child support obligations, increase benefits for families with three or more children, and reduce the EITC marriage penalty, which hurts low-income families.” In short, welfare spending is to be increased by paying more money out to low-income income tax filers.
The latest Congressional Budget Office data shows the bottom 40% of income earners already pays no income taxes. Indeed, they receive a net payment from the federal income tax system — meaning from the taxpayers — equal to 3.8% of all federal income taxes, because of the refundable tax credits under current law. The middle 20% of income earners, the true middle class, pays 4.4% of federal income taxes.
Overall, the bottom 60% of income earners pay less than 1% of federal income taxes on net. When “tax credits” primarily go to this group in the form of checks from the government (rather than a reduction in their tax burden) it is simply an abuse of the language to call the spending a tax cut.
Consequently, to say, as the campaign does say, that the candidate’s tax plan is a tax cut on net — and that it would limit taxes to 18.2% of GDP — is grossly misleading. The Obama tax plan would sharply increase real taxes. It also would come nowhere near to paying for the massive increases in federal spending he has proposed, including the spending that is disguised in the form of refundable tax credits.

Obama admits he supports Marxism during an interview with Bill O’Reilly on Fox News…
***The Obama [KGB] Squad has blocked the video but the text of the interview is still posted.
By Scott Miller
Karl Marx, author of The Communist Manifesto, penned the recap of his basic economic philosophy below:
“From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs”
Barack Obama, in an interview with Bill O’Reilly on Fox News, admits that he shares the above Marxist economic theory. Watch this (5:47 into the clip, but watch the whole clip):
“If am sittin’ pretty, and you’ve got a waitress who is making minimum wage plus tips, and I can afford it and she can’t, what’s the big deal for me to say I’m going to pay a little bit more… that is neighborliness”
No Senator, that is Marxism. What kind of dementia makes these liberal Marxists think they have the right to tell someone else, another free human being, how much money they should or should not have? It’s none of your damn business Barack… but the hell out!

Had John McCain been paying attention, he might have noticed this change earlier, like in the first debate between McCain and Obama.
Obama clearly said at that time, quite a few weeks ago, that his plan provides for tax cuts to 95 percent of working Americans.
So whenever it was changed, the change happened sometime before that.
Sorry, McCain, but you were asleep at the switch again.

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:
The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh would pay $7.
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.
So, that’s what they decided to do. The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve.
“Since you are all such good customers”, he said, “I’m going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20″. Drinks for the ten now cost just $80.
The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men – the paying customers? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his “fair share?”
They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody’s share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer. So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man’s bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay.
And so:
The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings).
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33%savings).
The seventh now pay $5 instead of $7 (28%savings).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).
Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings.
“I only got a dollar out of the $20,” declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man, “but he got $10!”
“Yeah, that’s right,” exclaimed the fifth man. “I only saved a dollar, too. It’s unfair that he got ten times more than I!”
“That’s true!!” shouted the seventh man. “Why should he get $10 back when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks!”
“Wait a minute,” yelled the first four men in unison. “We didn’t get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!”
The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.
The next night the tenth man didn’t show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn’t have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!
And that, boys and girls, journalists and college professors, is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.

For those claiming no ‘alternatives’ are offered except screaming Socialism ….the real BS!
(1) How about NO TAX INCREASES on ANYONE! Ever thought of that Liberals?
John McCain is on record for this policy
(2) How about a FLAT or FAIR TAX OF 20% ACROSS THE BOARD. No loop holes for individuals or businesses.
John McCain is on record supporting this policy
(3) How about NO TAXES AT ALL ON CAPITAL. We ARE (were) a Capitalist system.
John McCain is on record supporting this policy
(4) The ‘needy & poor’ will get CHARITY. No more entitlements as previously defined. Americans can afford to support ALL those in need of this charity.
No candidate supports this policy. Too bad.
(5) Sex, Drugs, Marriage, abortion: Everyone is on THEIR OWN. You want these things YOU PAY FOR IT YOURSELF. NO ‘Federal’ government involvement AT ALL.
John McCain is on record supporting some of these policies
No ‘Federal’ government involvment due to the negative results of those decsisions like: No free abortions, no drug counseling or drug related healthare (sanitarium like the old days), Marry your Dog for all I care (helmsley), let the State YOU LIVE IN provide those services.
These policies could reunite the nation and put PERSONAL & CIVIC RESPONSIBILITY back in vogue. The 50 States can start taking more responsibility for ‘their local citizens and their local issues’.
Leave the Federal Government alone to protect the boarders, protect from foreing invaision, and tend to the ‘administrative’ requirments of the Constitution.

So, adjusting a plan based on more current information is considered, “doing anything for a vote.” Whereas, staying in the same path for years at a time, not wavering course, despite obvious failure is considered, “good leadership.”

You mean that when Obama said he was giving 95% of Americans (100% – 5% who earn over $250,000) a tax break, he really didn’t mean it? That was just his way of making it sound more attractive? So once he got caught up in his own words because 40% of the 95% don’t pay taxes, he is now using different words. What he should have been saying from the beginning is that he was going to give a tax break to 55% of the country. I guess that didn’t sound as enticing to his supporters.

WASHINGTON – Freddie Mac secretly paid a Republican consulting firm $2 million to kill legislation that would have regulated and trimmed the mortgage finance giant and its sister company, Fannie Mae, three years before the government took control to prevent their collapse.
In the cross hairs of the campaign carried out by DCI of Washington were Republican senators and a regulatory overhaul bill sponsored by Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb. DCI’s chief executive is Doug Goodyear, whom John McCain’s campaign later hired to manage the GOP convention in September.
Freddie Mac’s payments to DCI began shortly after the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee sent Hagel’s bill to the then GOP-run Senate on July 28, 2005. All GOP members of the committee supported it; all Democrats opposed it.

SEN. BARACK OBAMA, (D) PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: “What he is confusing is the fact that even if you don’t pay income tax — there are a lot of people who don’t pay income tax — you are still paying a whole lot of other taxes.” Those of you who say Obama hasn’t changed what he SAYS (whether his plan has changed or not) are just not listening or have drank too much kool-aid. He is all over the place this week talking about payroll taxes, property taxes, and everything else to try and cover the fact that he is making no sense when he says 95% of Americans which he has been saying for months. If you really think that the word “working” makes a different, don’t you know that of the 5% who he is going to increase taxes on, a lot of those people don’t “work” and just live on income from investments or inheritance, etc. Why don’t you really analyze what you think you’re hearing?????

We should read the article recently published at The Financial Times (Clive Crook): McCain is no salesman on tax proposals – “How is it, for example, that Mr McCain has been so thoroughly outmanoeuvred on tax policy?
Both candidates have offered complex tax proposals. Proliferating alternative baselines (with or without the extension of the Bush tax cuts, with or without a “patch” for the alternative minimum tax, and so forth) deepen the confusion. Unable to fathom the details, voters are left to weigh the competing slogans. Mr Obama promises to cut taxes for 95 per cent of working families. Mr McCain says the rich need a tax cut, too.
Here is a fact you might not have noticed. It certainly seems to have slipped by most Americans. The typical US household would get a bigger tax cut under Mr McCain’s proposals than under Mr Obama’s.
Broadly speaking, Mr McCain proposes to leave the Bush tax cuts in place. Mr Obama proposes a big increase in taxes on people earning more than $250,000 (€187,000, £145,000) a year, in order to cut taxes and increase subsidies at the bottom; for the middle, he too would mostly keep the Bush tax code. Middle-income households do come out slightly ahead under the Obama plan – but only if you leave out the effect of Mr McCain’s healthcare proposal. The question is, why would you do that?
Mr McCain wants to abolish the tax-break for employer-provided healthcare and replace it with a refundable $5,000 credit. Mr Obama says that a family health plan might cost $12,000 a year – leaving families who buy their own policy $7,000 worse off. This is incorrect.
“Suppose a family currently has a $12,000 policy provided by an employer. Under the McCain proposal, instead of attracting relief as at present, this benefit would be taxed as ordinary employment income – but the extra tax paid would be more than offset by the new $5,000 credit. In the first analysis, nothing changes so far as employers are concerned: all the action is on the employee’s pay cheque. The policy delivers a net tax cut to middle-income households and is enough TO MAKE THE MCCAIN TAX PLAN ON AVERAGE A BETTER OVERALL DEAL FOR THEM THAN THE OBAMA PLAN.”
Interesting at the time of ELECTING WHO IS PROTECTING THE AMERICAN PEOPLE MORE AT THIS TIME OF ECONOMICAL CRISIS.

I’d love to make that kind of money…….The amount of money that was spent on Palin’s wardrobe, $150,000, is more than an average American family spends in 80 Years! Yes, 80 years! Can we all say “elitist”?

So all of you financial and political geniuses who have all of a sudden discovered big words like “Marxist” and “Socialist”–you just believe that the chick who makes $8 an hour flipping pancakes should pay the same taxes as Bill Gates? Are you freakin’ insane? All Obama’s suggesting is that we roll back the Bush tax cuts on the WEALTHY–and yeah, I don’t believe for a minute that the bunch of mid-afternoon slackers here are all secret millionaires. McCain voted against the Bush tax cuts…right before he voted FOR them.
This last-minute squawking about “ooohh–he’s going to spread the wealth” from the McCain camp is an embarassment. It reeks of desperation from a campaign which has never really found its footing. Corporations don’t get welfare. They do pay taxes. Why raise their taxes? All they will do in order to maintain their profit margins is raise prices on consumer goods which then we all have to pay, poor and rich alike. If Obama is so worried about the poor and working class, he should leave corporate taxes alone. He just knows how stupid some people are, and is buying there votes buy offering to play Robin Hood. In the end, we will just pay more for goods and services. Wake up!

Frankly, I think Obama’s original plan was genius. I fall into the 2% who “do not work” and yet I have a mortgage and other deductions that I can’t claim. I raise two kids with my child support, go to nursing school, and get alimony which is intended to essentially sell my ex-husband his business month by month for the next five years. (oh, he is way behind but business isn’t great and we are working it out together)
If McCain had gotten up and said that single mothers like me shouldn’t get a refund for our mortgage interest because we “do not work,” the country would have been up in arms! Who says motherhood isn’t work?

THE “MIDDLE CLASS”, the “MIDDLE CLASS” Have you heard the incessant drumbeat of Obama and Biden. That was the beginning of their fall in the polls. Most have forgotten that because of the bailout. He is the pot calling the kettle black.
McCain dismissed the immigration reform bill he co-sponsored because voters chimed their disapproval of it. He did so during a republican debate in January. He would not answer the late Tim Russert’s question on if he still supports “his” bill and he just kept saying “we will build a fence first”.

Portlarge – Americans have no problem identifying who the patriots are. Just look at the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan; about 75% of them are voting for Senator John McCain. Yes, they understand what the word “patriot” means. The extreme left wing liberals are very upset that the word “socialism” is coming out in this campaign. That’s what happens when Senator Obama talks about redistributing the wealth of hard working Americans. Left-wingers want to turn this into a Republican versus Democrat race. Unfortunately, when it comes to ANY politician trying to dip into Americans’ wallets to “Spread the Wealth”, Americans see that politician as a “leech” and it doesn’t matter what Party they belong too. Sorry, but that’s the way it is.

McCain is the one who will say or do anything to win. Despite supporting Bush 90% of the time — including the major war and economic policies — suddenly Bush is the bad guy for McCain. One day McCain says the economy is strong, the next day he’s swooping into Washington to save it. But worst of all, McCain has gone full speed into the disgusting smear and scare tactics that Bush and Rove used against him in the 2000 primaries, when they spread rumors that he had a black child. Now the Republicans are using scare tactics to make people think Obama is Muslim, a terrorist sympathizer, or a socialist. John McCain’s campaign — and especially Palin — are promoting these smears. I once admired McCain but now he has lost all dignity and respect in my eyes.

A huge stage is being constructed in Chicago’s Grant Park, where Obama hopes to declare victory . The Chicago Sun-Times reports the price tag of the fanfare has been pegged at $2 million, to be picked up by the Obama campaign. Mayor Richard Daley reportedly suggested Obama use a cheaper venue, but was turned down. Wonder how much he’ll spend on his outfit?

Natasha I agree with you,
What most pro-Obama supporters don’t get is that both Hitler and Communists came to power on the platform of change.
WHEN I SEE CHILDREN CHANTING OBAMA’S SONG, ‘OBAMA WILL CHANGE IT AND RE-ARRANGE IT’, OR when THEY USE CHILDREN TO ATACK PALIN, IT REMINDS ME OF A PIONEER MOVEMENT IN THE SOVIET UNIION AND HITLER YOUTH GROUP, THAT UTILIZED CHILDREN IN THEIR PROPOGANDA MACHINE. CONGRATULATION AMERICA, THE INDOCTRINATION OF THIS GREAT NATION HAS BEGAN. THERE WILL BE VERY FEW WINNERS IN THIS PROCESS.

By the way $1200 for cell phone for the year..that’s part of the problem..do you have a big Cable bill also? Everyone has so much…wait and see when this recession becomes a Depression and you can’t even afford a basic phone!

“Obama wills anything to win”…isn’t that what John McCain is doing?

Posted by: JJ | October 23, 2008, 4:00 pm 4:00 pm

McCain saying Obama will say anything to win = pot calling the kettle black.
I think it’s fairly obvious that the facts rarely align perfectly with either candidate’s assertions. They both are doing everything they can to win.

History will mark John McCain as an angry, divisive and confused old man. The Republican have done everything that they can to ruin this country and bow paybacks a b*tch.

Let’s see all of the people Obama has had to denounce or distance himself from that he used to be very “freindly” with.
William Ayers
Tony Rezko
jeremiah wright
Father Pfleger
Louie Farakhan
his grandma
I was waiting for him to distance himself from michelle after her awsome comments but apparently barry is afraid to upset michelle

Actually Barb, $1200 for a cell phone equals $100/month for a family of 4, thats hardly excessive.

Mike — As an intelligence specialist who has accurately identified in advance secret Russian programs and intentions during the Cold War, I wish to put on the record the following: Soviet “leader” Vladimir Putin and those Middle East terrorist who wish to destroy the United States WILL NOT RESPECT SENATOR OBAMA AND THEY WILL RESPECT AND FEAR SENATOR McCAIN. Now, you can vote for who you wish for your own reasons, but at least incorporate the above into your “analysis”. I am watching this ABC Blog section to make sure that Obama supporters no longer throw out “garbage”. Sorry but that is the way it is.

Posted by: bob
————————————-
Nice try! Obama and Bush and McCain signed off on the emergency plan that had to pass. Please compare apples and apples – we are talking about Obama’s tax plan “tweak” and overall political and socioeconomic ideology. Yes, he is inspired by Carl Marx and just the thought of it makes to want to scream at all Americans who fell asleep at the switch all these months.

Posted by: Natasha | October 23, 2008, 4:09 pm 4:09 pm

Emma, and anyone else concerned about losing America if Obama is pres:
I’ve got news for you. We are losing America under Bush, and will continue to do so under McCain. Bush is moving the country towards a fascist state. Is that the country you want? We’ve already lost rights, Bush has been acting like a Maverick dictator at times, and we’ve all just been watching it go slowly down the tubes.
McCain distracts you by yelling “Socialist!” and “Welfare!” (all, mind you, after he seized in his incredible Gotcha Journalism way upon a phrase Barack said, taking it out of context of the 5 minute conversation of which it was a part.
Fine. Be distracted by McCain. But the last laugh will be on you.
If you want to retain America, and get back to democracy as it was set up by our Founding Forefathers, vote for Barack Obama. Barack is FOR America, in the best sense of the word.

Barry Goldwater’s granddaughter:
“Being Barry Goldwater’s granddaughter and living in Arizona, one would assume that I would be voting for our state’s senator, John McCain. Myself, along with my siblings and a few cousins, will not be supporting the Republican presidential candidates this year. We believe strongly in what our grandfather stood for: honesty, integrity, and personal freedom, free from political maneuvering and fear tactics. I learned a lot about my grandfather while producing the documentary, Mr. Conservative Goldwater on Goldwater. Our generation of Goldwaters expects government to provide for constitutional protections. We reject the constant intrusion into our personal lives, along with other crucial policy issues of the McCain/Palin ticket.
My grandfather (Paka) would never suggest denying a woman’s right to choose. My grandmother co-founded Planned Parenthood in Arizona in the 1930′s, a cause my grandfather supported. I think he would feel that love and respect for ones privacy is what matters most and not the intolerance and poor judgment displayed by McCain over the years.
…The Republican brand has been tarnished in a shameless effort to gain votes and appeal to the lowest emotion, fear. Nothing about McCain, except for maybe a uniform, compares to the same ideology of what Goldwater stood for as a politician. The McCain/Palin plan is to appear diverse and inclusive, using women and minorities to push an agenda that makes us all financially vulnerable, fearful, and less safe.
Nothing about the Republican ticket offers the hope America needs to regain it’s standing in the world, that’s why we’re going to support Barack Obama. I think that Obama has shown his ability and integrity. After the last eight years, there’s a lot of clean up do. Roll up your sleeves, Senators Obama and Biden, and we Goldwaters will roll ours up with you.”

I’m sorry, having been a pow does not qualify one for the presidency and his stump speeches are a mish mash of jibberish and half truths.Sen. Obama is the man for this time in our history.

WW Terry,
You better be careful that you are not charged for libel, malicious defamation, or slander!!! Simply repeating somebody’s comments is not an excuse for these charges. And in some jurisdiction, the truth is not even a defense. For example, let us assume that my neighbor Anne is indeed a whore. I can’t run a front page article on the NY Post and declare that “Anne is a whore.” I can still be charged for invasion of privacy, or libel at best.
I can find ways to search your IP address, identity, and location, and recommend preferral of charges against you, but that is not my goal in life. So just be careful, watch your comments, and remain civil.
Let us remain as proud Americans, campaign vigorously for our candidates, and acknowledge the vote of the populace come 4 Nov 08!!!

I have posted on here many times over the months, trying to point how how badly underqualified Obama really is. He is a liar, will say anything to be elected, and has promised everyone something. The media “elected” him months ago and many people are swept up in the empty rhetoric of THE ONE.
I have changed my position…I now do not believe John McCain can win this election. Too many strikes against him…many not his fault and some actually self-inflicted. Where I am now is I am ready for Obama to actually do it. Go ahead. Part the waters…give it a try. I’m still not voting for him but he clearly is going to win. He seems to think this country sucks…that it will only be great once he is our President. Time to strap it on..Ol Bar. Putin is salivating over this guy…as is every other world leader. The U.S will officially become not only a joke in 2009…but a weak, lame joke.
Give it a go, Barry….and let’s let the Democrats be accountable for EVERRYTHING AND THEN WATCH HOW THEY WILL POINT FINGERS, BLAME BUSH FOR THE NEXT 4 YEARS. Here it comes…”Well..the last 8 years takes time to undo”. I can’t wait for them to be accountable…for them to finally shut their pie holes and be held to the fire for fixing the terrible USA. My God..we have the best standard of living in the world..even today…and we are a bunch of ungrateful brats. It’s broken…so Barry needs to fix it.
Bring him on….and let all of your Obama freaks be held accountable for what you have done. The light bulb will be over Barry’s head now…and I can’t wait to see the heat.
Let the chips fall where they may. This country will have made its bed and we are in for a long nap.

ModerateRepublican…you forgot to mention the margin of error, which is usually 3% in these national samplings. If Obama is up by almonst 6% on average, then factoring in the margin of error means it could actually be a statistical tie.

Why are you worried about 150K for cloths when they are going to be auctioned off and they will make a hell of a lot more money off the auction. Also isn’t what Palin did spending 150k doing what Obama wants and spreading the wealth around?
—————-
The offer to donate the clothes only came after the purchase became public.
At the RNC Convention, Cindy McCAIN wore a $7000 “dress”, which looked more like a bright yellow school kids raincoat.
I thought, what the heck, if she can afford to pay $7000 to look like hell then it’s her business. Now, I’m wondering if the dress was bought with donations.

” Just look at the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan; about 75% of them are voting for Senator John McCain. ”
Uh, just think how many more votes he would’ve gotten had we pulled out 2003 days ago when Bush declared victory in Iraq. More US servicemen have died in Iraq since then than before…
And everyone who whines and blames it all on Bush… Can you say IMPEACHMENT? Something could’ve been done people!!! Hell all the Repugnantcans were yelling to impeach Clinton.
Think about this you idiots…
Clinton lied, but NO ONE died…
And whats up with that anyway? As President, doesn’t he deserve a blowjob. Friggin’ stressful job, people…
If McCain IS elected, I feel the dumbass American public will get just what it deserves.
Prove me wrong, people. Please!!!
Vote to make America GREAT once more.
But seriously folks, this is probably the single most important election of my lifetime – and I’m an old fart unless compared to McCain…
Everyone needs to get out and vote!!!
If we managed to get a 85% or higher voter turnout I would be so proud of America. Who wouldn’t be? Why I’d even be OK with a McCain/Palin presidency (choke).
As long as the MAJORITY of Americans made the call I would gladly uphold the decision.
Get out and Vote, AMERICA!!!
Even if you have to vote for he “wrong” candidate. ;-)

rep’s . . .the thorn in americas side.

Posted by: oh 4 ob | October 23, 2008, 4:18 pm 4:18 pm

House Democrats recently invited Teresa Ghilarducci, a professor at the New School of Social Research, to testify before a subcommittee on her idea to eliminate the preferential tax treatment of the popular retirement plans. In place of 401(k) plans, she would have workers transfer their dough into government-created “guaranteed retirement accounts” for every worker. The government would deposit $600 (inflation indexed) every year into the GRAs. Each worker would also have to save 5 percent of pay into the accounts, to which the government would pay a measly 3 percent return. Rep. Jim McDermott, a Democrat from Washington and chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee’s Subcommittee on Income Security and Family Support, said that since “the savings rate isn’t going up for the investment of $80 billion [in 401(k) tax breaks], we have to start to think about whether or not we want to continue to invest that $80 billion for a policy that’s not generating what we now say it should.”
What effect would this plan have on an already battered stock market? Well, I would imagine it would send it even lower, sticking a shiv into the portfolios of everyone who didn’t jump aboard. But I am sure the Chinese would love to jump in and buy all our cheap stocks to fund the retirement of their citizens.
The advent of private tax-deferred retirement accounts created a huge investor class in the US. By some estimations, more than 70% of American adults have money in the stock market in long-term investments for their eventual retirement. That’s a revolutionary change in the relationship between labor and ownership, one that capitalism succeeded in creating where Marx and his followers only fantasized.
What happens when the tax deferral on this investment ends? Most people won’t want to take the risks of the market without it, certainly not on the scale they do today (about $5 trillion in capital) and likely not after the Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac collapse. They’ll start moving to savings accounts or gold and removing their money from the markets. The flight of capital will eliminate the necessary engine for recovery, but that’s a minor point. The price of stock will utterly collapse as everyone looks to liquidate their holdings, crashing Wall Street and throwing tens of millions out of work as publicly-held companies disintegrate.
Want to see the Dow at its status before tax-deferred private investment accounts got approved? We’ll look at 8500 with wistful nostalgia. Get ready for 1500.

I’m a Christian who belongs to a church in Florida. Quite a few members of the congregation are older, several have been laid off recently and are having a hard time finding work because of their age, many lost necessary retirement funds in the past few weeks yet almost all are voting for McCain. I simply don’t understand it. McSame will do NOTHING for them – probably will continue to hurt them, actually. The Republican Party really hit pay dirt when they “claimed” the moral majority – so many of these people cling to that absurdity even when everything else is falling apart. When did God decide that Democrats couldn’t be Christians? It is ridiculous. On the other hand, several of my neighbors who, as far as I know, don’t go to church on a regular basis have hung signs in their yards saying Republicans For Obama. Seems to me they have more sense.

I like a man who can change his mind when he realizes there is a better way. Improving your plan isn’t “saying whatever you have to say to get elected.” It’s continual evolution and improvement of your idea. Pointing out anything in your opponent that might possibly give you an advantage? Now THAT’S saying whatever you have to say to get elected. Every accusation McCain makes causes me to respect him less.

” Obama says that he meant to say “spread the opportunity.”
“The simple point I was making was that even assuming he’s at a point that he wants to buy a business that he hopes will generate more than $250,000, the point I was making was that ten years ago or five years ago or even a year ago when he was making a lot less than that, he was having a tough time. … We don’t mind people getting enormously wealthy because of their skills and their talents and their drive. But we always want to make sure that the playing field is such where everybody who’s got a good idea has a chance to succeed. Everybody’s got a chance to get financing. Everybody who works hard is able to raise their family. Everybody has an opportunity if they act responsibly to send their kids to college and retire with dignity and respect. And in that sense, that does involve us spreading around opportunity.”
This is such BS. He said he wants to spread the wealth, and then he backtracks with this nonsense wiggle-out “explanation”.

Left Arm — Yes, all legitimate voters should get out and vote. Question for Senator Obama supporters? How are you going to get the “illegal” voters that ACORN registered fraudulently to vote? Ideally, it would be nice to have them arrested if they attempt to vote illegally. Perhaps it is time to have video cameras monitoring who enters the building so that criminals, illegal voters, and “professional voters” who vote more than once can be identified, after the fact if necessary, so that they can be arrested, tried, and if found guilty, put in jail long enough before any politician grants them a “Presidential Pardon.” Sorry, but that’s the way it is.

I want to make a statement about Palin. The national Guard in Alaska is the only part of that entity that is on active duty 24/7. Sarah Palin is in charge of them. She attends and has been attending top level intelligence briefings since taking that office. Her security clearance is higher than anybody, McCain or Biden forget about Obama. She knows more right now about intelligence then the other three put together. So you goof balls that keep spewing your filth and garbage, as usual have no clue. You are too busy getting drunk on the koolaide. How many of you donated to the $2,000,000.00 stage that Obama is having erected for his crowning in Chicago. You sheep may very well just get exactly what you deserve.

first off if I am not mistaken, when a president tries to pass a bill doesnt congress have to okay it also? I am not smart on politics and I dont claim to be, but I see both sides lying about stuff and accusing one another of things that sound like they are in first grade. I saw an article about sarah palin’s wardrobe,, for gods sake what do you think the others spend on clothes, they are not women ,,but i can guarantee you that obama has spent a pretty penny on his wife and kids wardrobe..lets bring that out too, or the traveling? all the candidates probably do that.. If the news is going to do that to one person ,then fair is fair, i would like to see all the budgets for clothes and travel for all candidates not just one. The media shouldnt be one sided ,,it tends to make me believe someone has paid them a pretty penny. So lets get to the real issues NOT THE CLOTHES..and stop accusing and get on with the real issues. Our country is going down the tubes….FAST ,,and this is what abc has to report on??? Can we please have an adult discussion with the real issues

McCain is a Master Weasel. If there is ANYONE who says and does things just to get votes it’s McCain. Remember during the spring primaries when conservatives were voting in droves for Huckabee? Conservatives had repeatedly been burned by McCain in the past, so that’s why they voted for Huckabee. “Suddenly”, McCain started spouting that he was a “true conservative”; Bush was even recruited to back McCain as a “true conservative”. So what has John McCain done lately? Now “suddenly” he is NOT a “true conservative”: he voted for the $700 Billion Bailout, and he even presented his own proposal to have taxpayers buy delinquent mortgages at “face value” (mortgage and investment firms take zero loss, while taxpayers bear all losses). Conservatives flipped-out on that one! When he needed votes in the spring, he claimed he was a “true conservative”; now when he needs votes of independents, he no longer is a “true conservative”. What John McCain says versus what he does are two different things: you can’t believe a word the man says.

joecamel: I understand you don’t consider trillions of dollars in debt to be a tax, but that’s exactly what it is. Republicans have this lovely way of imposing enormous debts on the unborn (talk about having no respect for life), and then claiming that they’ve helped the economy. Dems simply have the decency to call a tax a tax.

The economy is the real issue, they people should compare states on some major issues.
Here are the trends are being noticed by states.
Red states – low unemployment
blue states – high unemployment
red states – lower foreclosure rates
blue states – higher foreclosure rates.
red states – higher high performances
blue states – lower student performances
red states – business are growing
blue states – business are shutting down
red states – state budgets are balanced
blue states – state budgets are asking the government for help
red states – conservative management in government
blue states – liberal management in government
It does not take genius to see which type of personnel is needed to run a government that will make a society to grow.

Right on Track,
You are entitled to your own opinion. I think you read that I said, “in some jurisdiction.” Read some of the blogs that say, “stole money”, “liar”, “dope addict”, “her illegitimate child rather rather than of her daughter’s”, and other statements. These terms are accusatory, demeaning, and libelous. I am not referring to generic statements such as “elitist”, “centrist”, “far left”, “far right”, etc…..
The freedom of the speech is subject to the police power of the State. Do you know how many seemingly innocent people in my jurisdiction have been convicted for libels?
Perhaps, you should also take the CA bar examination, the most difficult bar in the entire United States.

John McCain has always claimed that he was against torture. Yet this past spring, when a bill came before the Senate which would outlaw torture, McCain voted against it! Why? It was during the spring primaries and McCain wanted the votes of conservatives, so he changed his position. When he needs votes he will change existing positions in a heartbeat. You can’t believe a word the man says.

Obama/Biden 08 – People voting for Senator McCain know where he stands and what he will do. People voting for Senator Obama place more stock in what he says than his voting track record, which on many issues, like taxes, are totally opposite what he has promised before his election to the Senate. For example, how can any Senator Obama supporter actually believe that he will cut taxes when the senator has consistently voted for tax increases and big spending programs? Furthermore, why would you want a socialistic “spread the wealth” approach and higher taxes at a time our country is suffering an economic meltdown? Tax increases during a recession led to the Depression during the 1930s. Sorry, but that’s the way it is.

So interesting to hear McCain suggest that Obama will “say anything to get elected” when everything that we’ve seen and heard from him suggests that he is really talking about himself. It is like he is yelling into his own mirror and I wish he would listen.
Say anything, do anything” to get elected is McCain’s Mantra. It is either that he thinks that the public is too stupid to look beyond his proclamations or he continues to forget his own record. I guess he was a Socialist when he voted against Bush’s tax increases for the wealthy in 2000. Obama is trying to get things back to tax levels under Clinton where the regular Joe (even right wing Joe the Plummer) has a chance. So Obama is outspending McCain. Since his money comes from small donars, I guess that means a LOT of people in America would rather hear his message than McCain or Palin. McCain had to go for Federal campaign funding, because he didn’t have enough supporters willing to put up a few dollars for his campaign. That’s what happens when you run a negative campaign instead of an issues oriented campaign.

John McCain said that his top priority when selecting a running mate would be to choose someone who was qualified to be President on “Day One”. So who did he choose? Sarah Palin! Less than two years ago she was the mayor of Tiny Town. The extent of her education is an undergraduate degree in journalism. She has zero knowledge of constitutional law, foreign policy, financial markets, monetary policy, fiscal policy, immigration, health care, etc. etc. etc. McCain somehow would like everyone to believe that a person can go from small-town mayor to the Presidency in two years. Unbelievable!!! There were many GOP candidates light years ahead of Palin in qualifications, but McCain chose her. Why? He wanted to placate conservatives, that’s why! He went back on what he had said, that he would choose someone qualified to be President on “Day One”. McCain will say and do ANYTHING to get votes. You can’t believe a word the man says.

Jim — The terrorists and anti-Americans of the world would certainly hold their own convention to celebrate if Senator Obama is elected by the American people. If fact, they would probably invite him to offer some “rhetorical flourishes” at the convention “WITHOUT PRE-CONDITIONS”. However, seriously, there will be no terrorist and anti-American convention because after the election they will be busy fortifying their bunkers — 4 more years of watching the skies and “hunkering down”. That’s the way it is.

WASHINGTON — Senator Barack Obama announced Thursday that he would not participate in the public financing system for presidential campaigns. He argued that the system had collapsed, and would put him at a disadvantage running against Senator John McCain, his likely Republican opponent.
With his decision, Mr. Obama became the first candidate of a major party to decline public financing — and the spending limits that go with it — since the system was created in 1976, after the Watergate scandals,
Under the federal presidential financing system, a candidate this year would be given $84.1 million from the Treasury to finance a general election campaign. In exchange, the candidate is barred from accepting private donations, or from spending more than the $84.1 million.
Obama said he would take it then he backed out.

Of the top 15 states in recent unemployment figures, 6 are blue, 5 are red, and 4 are too close to call. Considering Obama is leading in more states than McCain, the unemployment figures show nothing at all about whether states that lean one way or the other are better at employing their workers. PITTSBURGH — A 20-year-old woman who was robbed at an ATM in Bloomfield was also maimed by her attacker, police said.
Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Diane Richard tells Channel 4 Action News that the victim was robbed at knifepoint on Wednesday night outside of a Citizens Bank near Liberty Avenue and Pearl Street just before 9 p.m.
Richard said the robber took $60 from the woman, then became angry when he saw a McCain bumper sticker on the victim’s car. The attacker then punched and kicked the victim, before using the knife to scratch the letter “B” into her face, Richard said.
Richard said the woman refused medical treatment after the assault, which happened outside the view of the bank’s surveillance cameras.
The robber is described as a dark-skinned black man, 6 feet 4 inches tall, 200 pounds with a medium build, short black hair and brown eyes. The man was wearing dark colored jeans, a black undershirt and black shoes.

algwriter – “Since his money comes from small donors,” – that’s a nice theory, but the reality is, we don’t know where those small donations are coming from, so we don’t even know for a fact that they’re all American sources or if people have exceeded the allowed contribution amounts. The difference between accepting public campaign funds and going the private route is transparency. By accepting public funds, McCain made a deal with the American people to allow donations to be scrutinized by the American people (media, etc) – and he has – there hasn’t been a hint of scandal. Obama accepts only private funds and has not been so transparent, and some of the donations are considered controversial.

Jim – You actually make a very good point, though not the one you intended. If BO has 600 million of OUR money – which we gave him even when our economic problems were serious – that says a lot about who we believe will steer America in the right direction. And when he spends OUR money that WE gave him, he’ll be spending it in OUR economy, where it’ll be back in circulation. You inferred that he’s doing something wrong by spending the money to get elected, when that’s exactly what WE gave him OUR money to do. I understand you’re upset that he’s probably going to win, but trying to suggest that his financial advantage is a moral problem is silly. It’s money his supporters gave him to make sure he wins. Remember, as far as many of us lefties are concerned, you have to beat the righties by a landslide to make sure they don’t win by cheating, like they did in 2000 and 2004.

Obama’s America: the bitch for the rest of the world. Bomb the U.S? Send in a team of consultants to talk to the perpetrators? Russia invade Ukraine? Protest it at the UN(not knowing Russia has a veto vote). Putin puts nukes in Venezuela? Obama will say Chavez needs to be understood and will invite him to the White house for a visit. North Korea slides backwards towards Nucler proliferation? Obama will shrug and blame Bush.
And the grand daddy of them all: Al Qaeda will test us next year in Iraq…ol Barry is going to cut bait and run and the hopes and dreams Iraqis have built in the last year will go up in smoke.
Who’s ready for it? Yeah Barry!!!! He’s our man…the one! What a world this will be with him? I can’t wait.

I wish someone would actually address issues that are contributing to the weakening American system. What about credit card companies that charge “loan shark” interest rates? Hasn’t this weakened our economy? What about products manufactured overseas that have caused numerous deaths in America or are inferior as well as cause terrible environmental problems? I want a pair a tennis shoes made in America. Anyone know where I can buy them? We are making overseas manufacturers, telemarkerters, directory assistants, and technical support companies rich. Anyone notice Americans need jobs to buy these products? I want to hear serious, solid solutions to the energy crisis that go beyond the petroleum industry (for whom I now work). If I get a tax break I want it to be given because I am installing solar panels or am using wind power. I do not need to make the Middle Ease, China, Japan, or any other foreign country wealthy nor do I want my life dependent on their willingness to sell my nation oil. And I certainly do not want to support terrorism.
I haven’t really heard either McCain or Obama address any of these issues in a believable manner.
And where is Obama’s birth certificate? And just which hospital in Hawaii was he born…the one his sister mentiond or the one he says? Too many unanswered questions are on the table regarding Obama’s integrity. I have seen nothing that makes me believe he is not attempting to “change” America right into the hands of Muslim extremiest.
John McCain doesn’t seem to be want to commit to saying….there’s a problem and I will attempt to solve it by whatever. I have a problem with that. However, I suppose this means he isn’t making promises he cannot keep. Who knows?
And it is no one’s business how much money Sarah Palin pays for her clothes or how many houses John McCain and his wife own. It is no one’s business how much Obama paid for his house, unless it was paid for with illegal money. Then someone needs to prove it.
I do believe we are seeing The Revelation fulfilled. I believe if anyone is not a Christian and will read Daniel and The Revelation now, they will become a believer. It might be in their best interest to do so.
AGAIN, we have another election where so many Americans will not vote for a candidate but instead will vote against a candidate. When will we ever have a true statesman running for President of the United States.

I have to agree with comments posted earlier. Most of the Obama supports have NO idea what his agenda really is. Maybe they are the ones who will benefit from him taking money and giving it to the poor – with his grand tax plan. He did work in the poor districts of chicago. I guess he finally found a way to help them. If they can work they should work and pay thier own way, I am not against helping people who truly need it. But I am very against just giving them a hand out. So if you all don’t have a problem with giving your hard earned money away VOTE Obama. Maybe you should research what you are really voting for.

ALl of this talk about Marxism is such fear mongering> You cannot have private ownership with Marxism. And there are numerous forms of socialism in our society: Social security, property taxes to pay for schools (some pay more for the same service, police and fire and paramedics, etc etc. All Obama really wants to do is to roll back the Bush tax cuts on the top brackets to where they were under Clinton….not a big deal as the top got really rich back then too.

Chumley — Governor Palin will be qualified to answer that 3:00 AM telephone call on Day One when she takes the oath of office for Vice President of the United States in January 2009. Remember? That was the call that Senator Clinton informed the world that Senator Obama was not qualified to answer. Senator Palin is very sharp, a fast learner, intelligent, honest, and loves our country. She is the mother of 5 children, including her son serving in Iraq now, and I resent the left-wing unjustified attacks against such a decent woman, including the misrepresentations made two days ago by CNN, exposed today by FOX as lies. She has more experience than Senator Obama, who, by the way, has spent more time campaigning for office than he has as a senator. He’s a good “talker”, nice to hear speak on the university circuit, where he is more suited than the Oval Office. By the way, when he loses, he can expect huge speaking fees at universities in 2009. Of course, don’t forget, that maybe he’ll take time to drop by the Senate once in a while. Sorry, but that is the way it is.

Marxists/Socialists/Communists for Obama
America wake up! The American Marxists/Socialists/Communists have posted this proclamation right on Barack Obama’s official website (see link below)
Marxists/Socialists/Communists for Obama
“This group is for self-proclaimed Marxists/Communists/Socialists for the election of Barack Obama to the Presidency. By no means is he a true Marxist, but under Karl Marx’s writings we are to support the party with the best interests of the mobilization of the proletariat. Though the Democratic Socialists of America or the Communist Patty of America may have more Socialististic values, it is pointless to vote for these candidates due to the fact that there is virutally no chance they will be elected on a National level. The members of this group are not Leninists, Stalinists, etc. and do not support or condone the actions of North Korea, China, Cuba or any other self-procalimed “Marxist States.” They do not in anyway represent the Marxist philosophy nor do they represent Socialism/ Communsim. We support Barack Obama because he knows what is best for the people!”

Typical Obama tactic: Throw something against the wall and see if it sticks. If he gets criticism he changes or completely flip-flops. Obama will say anything to get elected, but he will have his own agenda when he actually gets in office.

Unfortunately 9/11 happened and Bush was forced to make more restrictions. I don’t think any of it is something he wanted to do. I’ve found in my experience that it tends to be liberals who like to tell everyone what to do and have rules for everything (Obama was even telling everyone to inflate their tires, today I heard him telling people to go vote early in case their car broke down).

I am doing really well and was so before Bush and will do so after Bush. Obama wont hurt me and neither will McCain. But if Obama gets in and he sucks, then we should throw his a**Ss out too. All of you GOP loyalists should have complained about Bush more and maybe things would have changed. What you are missing is that the GOP and the DEMs have both sold us out to Wall Street. Meanwhile we are arguing over silly things like changing the tax code from 36 to 39%, which is far lower than reagan and at the level of Clinton, when people made alot of $. This will affect me, but it will mean I cant buy another 911 Turbo. Boo Hoo. All taxes are by definition a form of money redistriubtion. WHy is Warren Buffet supporting Obama?

Old man McCain is a liar in the worst way. No way is he stable or honest enough to be our president. Just ignore his increasingly desperate BS. When it is all over, and he is trounced, he will blame Bush for all his woes, just like Al Gore blamed Bill Clinton. Jane, they are not scared of her they are threatened by her and have been since she was first introduced as VP candidate. Obama had his people converge on Alaska the day after she was announced to try and dig up any dirt they could on her. When the only thing they could find was troopergate and it was really a non-issue, they decided to use the “stupid, dingy woman” tactic, like they did on Hillary.

A young Obama will be corrupted, just like any socialist or communist leaders in other countries, China, North Korea and Vietanam, as he has NOT been tested, and inexperienced. American people should know better than being fooled by mere talks, and empty promises, Obama says ANYTHING to fish for votes. Watch out, America, he has already planned a “victory” party, while we all are suffering, the unemployed, the homeless and the elderly, is it a proper “spreading the wealth” message during the national economic crisis?? Is he simply a cigarette-smoking playboy, who has never changed from his questionable past in Hawaii and Indonesia?

I love how Sarah Palin scares so many people. You just want a target because:
1. She is a woman
2. She doesn’t fit the acceptable mold of a successful elite liberal woman. It’s ok for women to be a VP candidate…but she needs to be an abortion loving liberal who is chummy with Barbara Streisand and the hens from the View.
Therefore…she’s stupid or dangerous.
How about, Wow…here’s a new type of female leader who may have different views from us…but let’s admire her for her accomplishments and how she has cracked her own ceilings.
I’m a man….and have a great mom, 4 sisters…and an amazing wife. Talk about setting women back a generation.
Tolerance people!!!!

JIm,
The keys to Congress argument is bogus and you should know this from how the Senate works. The GOP filibusters (and so did the DEMs before). You need 60 votes in the Senate, not a simple majority. When you guys talk about this stuff, it is frustrating because you either dont know it (like Palin) or you ignore it. Both are bad.
As for my investments: I got out of the stock market years ago after the tech bubble. I am in a different position these days, but I will tell you that my original Jackson Pollacks have done quite well in this market. Have you seen what these things are doing? The stock market is for fools and is a rigged game.

IBD/TIPP Tracking Poll: Day Eleven
Posted: Thursday, October 23, 2008
McCain has cut into Obama’s lead for a second day and is now just 1.1 points behind. The spread was 3.7 Wednesday and 6.0 Tuesday. The Republican is making headway with middle- and working- class voters, and has surged 10 points in two days among those earning between $30,000 and $75,000. He has also gone from an 11-point deficit to a 9-point lead among Catholics.

“You Republicans have run this country’s economy into the ground blah blah blah…”
—————————————
The Last Two Years
By Randall Hoven
The Obama/Biden ticket’s entire campaign theme is based on “the last eight years.” Maybe we should really look at “the last two years,” or the time period when both the House and the Senate were run by Democrats.
In December 2006, after six years of Bush and the last month before the Democrats took over both houses of the national legislature, a snapshot of our economy looked like this.
Unemployment stood at 4.4%.
Real GDP growth over the previous four years (under a Republican President, House and Senate) averaged 3% per year.
A gallon of regular gasoline cost $2.30.
The S&P 500 stock index stood at 1418, or 84% above its post-911 low and more than 7% higher than when Bush took office.
Every year of Bush’s Presidency, real (inflation-adjusted) disposable income per person went up. By the end of 2006, the average person was making 9% more in real terms than before Bush became President .
If you recall, that 2006 election was considered a referendum on Iraq. The people wanted change, so they threw out the Republicans and replaced them with Democrats. Welcome Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi.
Here is how they handled Iraq once in office: Harry Reid told us that the Iraq war was “lost” and the surge was not “accomplishing anything.” Senator Obama introduced legislation that would have prevented the surge and would have taken all US troops out of Iraq by March 2008 (that would be seven months ago, as you read this) .
Were they right?
Barack Obama now admits that “the surge succeeded.” So much for that change. And as the surge succeeded, Congress’s approval ratings plummeted. The latest CBS/New York Times poll has it at 12%, well less than half of the already low level it stood at when the Republican Congress was being tossed out in 2006.
The Democratic Congress did a great job, if what you’re looking for in a Congress is continual investigation of Republicans. Did the White House out CIA agent Valerie Plame? No, it was the anti-White House Richard Armitage at State, but Congress investigated anyway. Did Alberto Gonzalez, with White House urging, fire nine prosecutors for political reasons? Probably not, and it wouldn’t be a crime anyway, but Congress investigated, and is still investigating. Did the CIA, under orders from the White House, “torture” prisoners? No evidence of that yet, but Congress is on the case.
What Congress would not investigate was anything about Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. In fact, they fought against such investigations and cast aspersions against anyone who would even doubt the soundness of those institutions. Here is what Barney Frank said:
These two entities, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, are not facing any kind of financial crisis. The more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing.
You can also see on video (see video URL below) how Democrats treated the regulators trying to reign in Fannie and Freddie.
But now we know what happened. Fannie and Freddie were run corruptly and ineptly and went bankrupt. Their $1.5 trillion portfolios had to be rescued by the government this year. Franklin Raines, the Clinton-appointed CEO of Fannie Mae who was vigorously defended by Congressional Democrats, was sued by government regulators for cooking the books to the tune of $10 billion to increase his own bonuses to the tune of tens of millions. He settled his suit for an estimated $25 million.
On the other hand, here is what the New York Times had to say in 2003 .
The Bush administration is rightly pushing for the Treasury Department to regulate the two giants, along with the network of federal home loan banks. Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae provide financing to lenders by creating a secondary market for mortgages. All told, these two institutions’ debt portfolio exceeds more than $1.5 trillion. Their current regulator is ill equipped to keep tabs on Freddie’s and Fannie’s sophisticated hedging strategies and the other financial moves they use to manage their huge investments.
And here is what John McCain said on the Senate floor:
For years I have been concerned about the regulatory structure that governs Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac… I join as a cosponsor of the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, S. 190, to underscore my support for quick passage of GSE regulatory reform legislation. If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole.
So on the big things, the surge in Iraq and the failure of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac that led to our recent financial mess, the Democrats were wrong. Dead wrong. One hundred eighty degrees out wrong.
On the other hand, who supported the surge? George W. Bush and John McCain.
Who tried to strengthen the oversight and regulation of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac? George W. Bush and John McCain.
In the case of the surge, Bush and McCain got their way. The result? Apparent victory in Iraq, a country that is now a democracy, at peace with its neighbors, no longer a WMD threat, no longer a terrorist sanctuary, and no longer filling hundreds of mass graves with hundreds of thousands of its own citizens.
In the case of Fannie and Freddie, Bush and McCain did not get their way – Barney Frank did. The result? The failure of Fannie and Freddie, law suits against their executives and the spark that sent banks failing and stocks falling across the globe to the point of threatening a Great Depression.
Let’s vote for change. Let’s undo what we did in 2006.

Let’s say for a moment that McCain is accurate, Obama changed his tax credit plan because of how the electorate didn’t like it….Does McCain mean that a president shouldn’t change his plans if the people think it should change? It’s government by the people and for the people last time I checked. Why is everyone so up in arms about poor people getting tax credits when oil companies receive billions (that’s with a B) in tax credits. Isn’t that corporate welfare?

Posted by: Catherine | October 23, 2008, 5:29 pm 5:29 pm

Why is McCain’s plan to buy everyone’s bad mortgages at full value not “socialization” or “welfare”? If McCain were running against a fiscal conservative he’d lose his base voters but since he’s all they’ve got they’ll cling to whatever rhetoric he spews. Hopefully moderates and independents will see that Obama has a better temperament, better judgement, and a better plan than McCain.

JUST IN — Follow the news tonight. A 20-year old girl working for McCain was apparently robbed at knife-point while getting money from an ATM machine in Pennsylvania. The attacker, upon seeing a Senator McCain sticker on her bumper, returned, beat her, shouted obscenities against Senator McCain, and carved a “B” on her cheek with his knife. This is all breaking news and must be verified. Hope that ABC and the rest of the networks sort out what has happened. If it turns out to be another low-class bum hoping to leech on another hard-working American, we hope that law enforcement authorities find out who is responsible.

As for capital gains: I will happily pay capital gains on something that I sell for an astronomical price. Do you know what a top end Pollack is worth now? Ten-15 years ago, they were worth a million or so. I got one from my dad who bought it when he was a nobody. Now they are $50 Million plus. So if I make $49 mil, I dont mind throwing a bone to the capital gains. I am still making alot of money. And then there are the Magrittes too

Obama isn’t just changing his plan, he is changing what he is saying to get elected (it’s called pandering). How many changes can he make in one year (from liberal to get the democratic nomination, to throwing everyone under the bus when people point out to him that they are radical or not politically expedient, to pretending that he didn’t say what he said)?
I agree that Palin should be admired and respected for what she has accomplished, whether you agree with her or not. I find the feminists who put her down to simply be more radical than feminist.

Earmarks are a problem, but why did McCant vote for the bailout the second time when it was loaded with $150 Billion in earmarks that the GOP supported? I thought he would not support bills with earmarks? Oh, only when he is President? Supporting bills with earmarks is hypocrisy for McCant. Do you agree? Or does he get a pass?
Earmarks will not go away because they promote incumbency amongst other things.

Earmarks are a small fraction of the total budget. Get some perspective. What about trimming the giant military bill that costs us nearly 1 trillion per year. What a waste. We spend more money than the entire world combined on war and the military. So much for a peaceful nation! We have over 800 foreign military bases. Time to trim the fat and I am happy that McCant said he would go after military procurement so that we dont have to get ripped off by the war profiteers…well not too much at least. That would save alot more than all of the earmarks combined.

It looks as if they have never met Communists and Socialists before. Too bad they have never been in Cuba to see what happens when the government puts a ceiling on what people can earn. Too bad that they have never seen what happens when workers are discouraged from working hard because the fruits of their labor are passed on to bums who don’t want to work or have that “First Among Equals” status because they are friends with the socialist politicians who make the rules. Sorry, but that’s the way it is.

There really should be no tax cuts at all in an economy like this. After Bush 41′s recession, Clinton raised taxes on cats like me and, although I felt a pinch, it didnt really matter to be honest. But it helped spur the economy. We need to raise taxes on the people making more than $1 million ($250K is too low for me) and we need to make sure that we close alot of loopholes for Wall Street. They have been ripping us off blind.

Right on Track, Intelligent Voter meant the average family doesn’t spend $150K on CLOTHING in 80 years. $1,875 a year for clothing would be about right for this family of 4. So, yep… a $150K clothing allowance would last this family about 80 years!!!

Posted by: RobbieSue | October 23, 2008, 5:45 pm 5:45 pm

Angie,
Since you are SMART enough to understand McCain plan, I will break it down for you.
Here is HOW McCain’s Plan works:
Current Plan:
Let say that you make $50,000. and your employer pay $12,000 for your health insurance. Let assume that the tax rate 20% for simplicity. So YOU will pay $10,000 in INCOME taxes. Did you get that? Remember that $10,000 you have to pay as TAXES.
McCain’s Plan:
You still make $50,000. and your employer gives you $12,000. for your health insurance. Now, your TAXABLE income is $62,000. with 20% tax rate you will pay $12,400. Did you get that?
McCain ALSO gives you $5,000. for your tax CREDIT (against your taxes liability), So, your taxes you PAY is $12,400. – $5,000. = $7,400.
As you can see instead of paying $10,000. you ONLY pay $7,400. a saving of $2,600. in your POCKET!
Do you UNDERSTAND it now?

Posted by: Voter In America | October 23, 2008, 5:45 pm 5:45 pm

Obama’s “tax cut” is actually a negative income tax for the 40% of Americans who already pay no income tax. It is wealth redistribution pure and simple. Take from the producers and give to the non-producers. A former Democratic congressman told one of my colleagues when my colleague was arguing with him about the propriety of raising taxes during a recession (several years ago) to which the congressman replied, “You don’t get it, do you? The more money we have, the more power we have.” That’s what this is all about.

“HeyBide..” My God, you’re right!! My philosophy is stay in Iraq for as long as we can! We’ve already paid a heavy price, we’re a tempering prescence to Iran because we’re not only in Iraq, but Afghanistan too. Both, “conveniently” on either side of Iran!
Least I remind everyone, Iran started the Islmo-fascism in 1979 with the Iranian revolution and the taking of the US Embassy” (You’d be surprised how many 20-somethings don’t know that!)
Look, I don’t want war anymore than the next Joe, but we’ve spent so much in Iraq now, it’s senseless to pull out and allow chaos! Iran will be a power broker in the region, and we’ll eventually have to go back. Trust me, I don’t like these words I’m saying, I just think they make sense!
Further, every country we’ve ever fought wars in have become allies. I know my uncle who fought in WW-II would never have thought we’d be as friendly with Japan as we are today, but,,,we are.
America and Americans are not bad people, perhaps,,,,there was a method to Bush’s madness all along,,,,God how I struggle to understand it, and perhaps only history will prove right or wrong.

Are you familiar with the paramedics, the fire dept, polic dept? That is a form of socialism, a form of shared costs. Plus, property taxes (which are not even) yield school dollars. Distribution of Wealth (Spread the Wealth):
Lately there is lot being said on re-distribution of wealth, particularly in the context of “Joe the fake plumber” who apparently is terrified of the idea of government taking more money from him one day and giving breaks to the people trying to make it on the lower end of the financial spectrum. Joe believes that under a democratic rule, government will step in and will start to financially penalize him for being successful.
Frankly I think people on the lower end of financial spectrum should be up in arms for the re-distribution of wealth that has been going on for the past 8 years. Government has been taking more from the middle class and have been giving breaks to the rich people on the top. This in my view is also called as re-distribution of wealth. But some how in this topsy turvy world of politics the republicans have managed to label the “fair taxes” that democrats are proposing as being a socialist agenda. So it is OK for the government to be socialist when it comes to bailing out wall street and banks and rich people, but it is taboo when, heaven forbid, it comes to government trying to impose more fair and balanced taxes on the rich? Rich republicans, who currently dominate the GOP party platform, have been pushing the message of socialism, re-distribution/spreading of wealth type of messages frankly because they want to continue to build their wealth at the expense of the middle class. So to Joe the plumber, you should be mad as your rich republican friends want to continue to pay their unfair share of taxes under a republican government under the false banner of preventing socialism

We created Iran: We assassinated their leader in 1953, replaced him with the corrupt Shah and British Petroleum was created. Nice work guys. And then the whole 1970 Revolution came. Iran democratically elects thier officials. We have alot of blame in how Iran has turned out. We empowered them with the false war in Iraq as Hussein was a buffer. And we made a mess under Reagan with Iran/Contra. The entire Middle East (not just Israel) is terrified by Iran. But we will not need to go to war with Iran; too costly, too problematic especially as they have Russia on their sides. Only cool minds can negotiate this. And John Adams (a real patriot) said that the most important function of a US president it to AVOID WAR. “Great is the guilt of an unnecesary war”. Iran is more pwerful thanks to Bush, but Iraq will be stabilized and we can move to Afghanistan where the real problem is. Too bad Bush got it all wrong. he really hurt us.

McCain gives you $5000 tax break to buy insurance (per family):
1. How much does it cost you to buy insurance for your family of 4?
2. If you have a pre-condition health problem, how much does it cost you to buy your insurance?
3. If you get the tax refund, will you take the money and buy insurance? If not how will you pay for your healthcare later?
4. What will you do if insurance company refuse to cover the expense or refuse to sell insurance to you?
5. How will McCain pay for the generous $5000 tax refund that he give you? More deficit for the country? Who will pay for this deficit? How?

I learned when I was young; “You can learn something from everyone you meet – regardless of their education!”
I think a lot of folks herein can learn a lot from Sarah Palin!
She hunts, and knows how to gut a deer, and how to handle a firearm.
You see, during the upcoming “Obama depression,” those two skills could come in very handy to supplement your soup-kitchen rations!
Having and knowing how to use a firearm will be very handy with the marauding hoards trying to invade your home (if you still have one), or kidnap you or your children.
You see, the value system of this country has digressed so much, that if there is economic chaos, we can’t expect citizens to act like they did in 1929.
Our value system is far worse than that, and those on the bottom rung, will want to take aim (literally) at those supposed in the middle, even if you live a modest lifestyle.
So by all means, learn something from the lame-brained, Caribou-Barbie,,,,it just might save yours or you childrens life.
“Choose wisely grasshopper!!”

Obama with a proposed 1 trillion in additional spending and can’t cut taxes, but he will “change” just like Clinton and raise your taxes. Obama has never voted for a tax cut in his life!
McCain, with a freeze on spending can and will cut taxes. He has done this in the past.
Your actions speak louder than words.
If Obama ran your household budget like his federal budget proposals, you would be in debt up to your eyeballs!!!!!!!!!!!

Taxing benifits is as old as taxing your tax refund – both are stupid but you’re still getting something.
Obamas plan indicates he won’t tax anyone but the wealthy, and they,,,THEY can hide or move money off shore.
Corporations can move jobs overseas, so yeah,,,,we’ll need the welfare Obama prmises.

stopthemadness,
Here is HOW McCain’s Plan works:
Current Plan:
Let say that you make $50,000. and your employer pay $12,000 for your health insurance. Let assume that the tax rate 20% for simplicity. So YOU will pay $10,000 in INCOME taxes. Did you get that? Remember that $10,000 you have to pay as TAXES.
McCain’s Plan:
You still make $50,000. and your employer gives you $12,000. for your health insurance. Now, your TAXABLE income is $62,000. with 20% tax rate you will pay $12,400.

After reading an article about Carol McCain in the UK Daily Mail, the first wife of John McCain, I wouldn’t vote for this scumbag for dog catcher. If he would do this to the mother of his children, what would he do to the American people:
“But Ross Perot, who paid her medical bills all those years ago, now believes that both Carol McCain and the American people have been taken in by a man who is unusually slick and cruel – even by the standards of modern politics.
‘McCain is the classic opportunist. He’s always reaching for attention and glory,’ he said.
‘After he came home, Carol walked with a limp. So he threw her over for a poster girl with big money from Arizona. And the rest is history.’”

What’s the matter? Are you embarassed to even mention the other two?
You see, my mamma and my pappa, and my great teachers, told me to never-never trust ANY of the three or anyone who utters the words “distribution of wealth”. (haha!)
Frankly, I am in shock that the Socialists/Communists/Marxists of America have the audacity to place their “proclamation” of support for Barack Obama right on the Presidential candidates’ official website
Geez, live and learn they say! I truly wonder how many Americans have seen this public support of Marxists for the next President of the United States!
(Putin and Medvedev must be having a “ball”!)
I can not help it, but only the words “shock and awe” can possibly describe how I felt, when I saw this nauseating “proclamation” by the Socialists/Communists/Marxists on Barack Obama’s website without him or his “Comrades” to ever denounce their support.
But, why am I surprised? It took Obama 20+ years, the media chorus, and the fear of losing his Presidential bid, in order to finally distance himself from Wright. Amazing.

What I find funny is that people are up in arms about the fact that Obama isn’t leeching public tax money. You WANT him to leech your hard earned taxes (like McCain is) just for a popularity contest? This doesn’t make any sense to me, it really doesn’t. Little wonder the american economy is up the proverbial creek without the proverbial paddle! The public money is tossed around like a salad. Obama will have to raise taxes on those making $75,000.—WSJ—
The plunder that the Democrats plan to extract from the “very rich” — the 5% that earn more than $250,000 and who already pay 60% of the federal income tax bill — will never stretch to cover the expansive programs Mr. Obama promises.
What next? A core group of Obama enthusiasts — those educated professionals who applaud the “fairness” of their candidate’s tax plans — will soon see their $100,000-$150,000 incomes targeted. As entitlements expand and a self-interested majority votes, the higher tax brackets will kick in at lower levels down the ladder, all the way to households with a $75,000 income.

McCain claims to be a Christian. His running Sarah Palin appeals to all of the Bible mom’s and Scripture Moms.
Well, in terms of tax “tweaks” what did Jesus say? He told the rich man to “sell all you have and give to the poor.” Was Jesus a socialist? Wasn’t this a form of redistributing wealth?
Jesus also said that it more difficult for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven than for a camel to pass through the eye of the needle. Maybe he should found out what happened to the rich man in the parable Lazarus and Dives.
Look at all of McCain’s core supporters, Rupert Murdock, Sam Walton, Donald Trump, Carly Fiorinna, Charlie Black, Rick Davis. Have they sold everything they owned and given it to the poor? How about Cindy McCain? And when McCain claims he want everyone to be rich – according Jesus, he wants everyone to go to hell – like Dives.
Obama’s tax plan is not nearly as socialistic as teachings of Jesus Christ. I’d suggest that McCain and Palin use that good old country classic “The Harper Valley PTA” ad their campaign theme song, because they both are “Harper Valley hypocrites.”

AS for Obama’s tax plan all anyone has to do is make sure they don’t earn $250,000 or $200,000 and they won’t have to pay more if I made that kind of money in just 1 year I would consider myself rich. I would love to see MR. and MRS. Mcbush live for 1 month on social security. John and Cindy McCain gave 26% of their income to charity – while Barack and Michelle gave a whoppin’ 5% … The wealth Obama wants to spread is not his, but yours. Jesus came to separate, not unite. He came to give us the choice of good over evil – OUR choice – that is not Socialism. Absolute power corrupts absolutely – look what happened to David. We, as Americans are in a free (to choose) country – and it needs to stay that way. Giving government the power to choose for us is not blindly following Jesus – it’s blindly following Barack Obama.

At a time that Europe is awakening up – turning to the “right” after years of “failed socialism” it would be a crime to elect Marxist Obama as the next President of the United States of America.
Even France learned the lessons of its “failed socialism” and elected conservative Nicholas Sarkozy – a staunch friend of the United States. And here we are…Americans are about to let our country be destroyed by MARXIST BARACK OBAMA!
The following video is for the geopolitically savvy and morally sound American patriots – not for the “Obama Communist Youth”!
Sarkozy speaks to America: A most remarkable speech:
Video: Sarkozy’s Speech Before the US Congress (see below)
“France’s new leader Nicolas Sarkozy gave a speech before Congress that was, dare I say, almost…Reaganesque. He called America “the greatest nation,” among other platitudes.
You can view the whole thing here, and I really think you should all watch it.
http://sayanythingblog.com/entry/video_sarkozys_speech_before_congress/
He speaks of America in such glowing terms that you almost wonder if he isn’t, in some ways, more American than certain Democrats I could think of.
What’s particularly interesting is that, years ago when the Bush presidency was new and Iraq was a fresh issue, the left told us constantly that George Bush was making America less popular in the world. Yet during the President’s term in office three of our traditional allies (Canada, Germany and now France) elected leaders that displaced virulently anti-Bush and anti-American leaders with people more of Sarkozy’s temperament (Stephen Harper in Canada and Angela Merkel in Germany).

The difference between Obama’s tax cuts and McCain’s cuts is that for Obama’s tax cuts you have to be a worker on middle class income or lower, while for McCain’s tax cuts you just have to be rich, working or not. To McCain it doesn’t matter if you work or have just had wealth passed on to you and just laze around spending it on yourself. As long as you are wealthy McCain gives you a tax cut.

I don’t know anyone in africa but i send money there to feed the children…just costs me the price of a cup of coffee each day. maybe obama could send his brother a check, a money order, do a wire transfer…you’re pathetic. You can’t call somebody out for their shortcomings but turn a blind eye when your candidate exhibits those same short comings. you are absolutely pathetic.

““Every time, whenever an American soldier falls somewhere in the world, I think of what the American Army did for France,” Mr. Sarkozy said as his audience applauded. “I think of them and I am sad, as one is saddened to lose a member of one’s family.”
Sarkozy’s emotional speech to our Congress…The left-wing liberal media had of course “downplayed” the event, the same way they downplayed Sarkozy’s visit to our country last week.
More people saw every detail of this visit in Europw than in our country. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out why the left wing liberal nedia Morons downplayed President Sarkozy’s visit. (he was here to discuss the global economic crisis with our government)…
The media wants to have us all believe that we are “hated” all over the world -even among our European allies. Well, my answer to the media clowns is that Russia’s invasion of Georgia was the best proof that our allies – one after the other – sttod firmly with our country!
Don’t let the liberal media fool you. After decades of “failed Socialism Europe has taken a sharp turn to the “conservative right” and American- style Capitalism, while we here…we Americans are about to take a sharp turn to the “left”/ Socialism. Europe will be moving forward and we will be moving backwards.
America think before you vote for “Socialism”. That is NOT the kind of “Change” that we need!

Congress Warms to France’s New President
By ELAINE SCIOLINO
WASHINGTON, Nov. 7 — The United States Congress welcomed Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, with loud cheers and standing ovations on Wednesday, a sign that France had been forgiven for opposing the American-led war in Iraq.
In a speech to a joint meeting of Congress — a rare honor for a head of state — Mr. Sarkozy seemed to strike all the right notes. He spoke of his love of the American dream and cultural icons of the 20th century, from Elvis Presley to Ernest Hemingway. He expressed admiration for American values and for the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He thanked the United States for saving France in two world wars, rebuilding Europe with the Marshall Plan and fighting Communism during the cold war.
When he called France “the friend of the United States of America,” the hall, packed with lawmakers, many of whom held France in disdain only a few years ago, burst into applause. When he said that a nuclear-armed Iran was “unacceptable,” they stood and applauded.
President Bush also showered his French counterpart with praise at a joint news conference following a tour and lunch at Mount Vernon, the Virginia home of George Washington.
“It’s safe to say that you’ve impressed a lot of people here on your journey,” Mr. Bush said, calling Mr. Sarkozy “the kind of fellow I like to deal with.”
The two presidents expressed their shared views on the need to curb Iran’s nuclear program and fight terrorism, and played down their differences on issues like the war in Iraq. “We had a difference of opinion,” Mr. Bush said. “But I don’t sense any difference of opinion now that a struggling democracy wants help from those of us who live in the comfort of free societies.”
Mr. Sarkozy responded cautiously, saying that what France wanted was a democratic, diverse and stable Iraq, able to govern and protect itself.
Mr. Bush even praised Mr. Sarkozy’s effort to break a political deadlock over coming elections in Lebanon by holding direct talks with Syria. While the Bush administration has isolated Syria, two senior French officials met last weekend in Damascus with Bashar al-Assad, Syria’s president, to warn him not to interfere in the elections.
“I have a partner in peace, somebody who has clear vision, basic values, who is willing to take tough positions to achieve peace,” Mr. Bush said. “And so when you ask, am I comfortable with the Sarkozy government sending messages, you bet I’m comfortable.”
The tight embrace of Mr. Sarkozy is remarkable given that he consistently has stated that France was right to oppose the war in Iraq. Like his predecessor, Jacques Chirac, he has refused to help the United States on the ground in Iraq.
But while Mr. Sarkozy did not mention the Iraq war in his speech, he expressed sympathy for American soldiers fighting and dying around the world, saying it reminded him of American soldiers’ sacrifices for France.
“Every time, whenever an American soldier falls somewhere in the world, I think of what the American Army did for France,” Mr. Sarkozy said as his audience applauded. “I think of them and I am sad, as one is saddened to lose a member of one’s family.”
Anti-French feelings were so fierce in Congress after France refused to join the Iraq war effort in 2003 that the word “French” was stricken from the menus of the House of Representatives’ cafeterias. “Freedom fries” and “Freedom toast” were introduced. There were initiatives to boycott any product made in France.
That angry mood is gone.
“President Sarkozy has hit a home run out of the ballpark,” said Representative Tom Lantos, the California Democrat who is chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs. “I expect a spectacular renaissance in French-American relations.”
Mr. Lantos added that France was proven right in its refusal to back the war in Iraq.
“In view of everything we know now — the flawed intelligence, the miserable execution of the post-military phase — the French certainly were right,” Mr. Lantos said.
Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Republican leader, said of Mr. Sarkozy’s performance: “You just heard a Ronald Reagan speech from a president of France. It was an almost out-of-body experience for all of us.”
The Capitol Hill welcome for Mr. Sarkozy sharply contrasted with that for his predecessor, Jacques Chirac, when he addressed Congress on his first state visit to Washington as president in 1996. Many members of Congress boycotted Mr. Chirac’s speech to protest France’s recent nuclear tests in the South Pacific; only about 100 attended.
Mr. Sarkozy managed to draw applause even after he chided the Bush administration for not taking a leadership role on climate change and warned about the risks of the dollar’s sharp decline.
In his speech and the news conference with Mr. Bush, Mr. Sarkozy pledged to be a strong partner with the United States against terrorism and to keep French troops in Afghanistan as long as needed in the NATO-led mission to bring stability.

Yeah, let’s distribute the wealth! Let’s start with Obama’s wealth first.
What the heck is wrong with half of the country? Since when the DemocRATS got so much wealth – enough to spread it to Obama’s campaign so that “Messiah Obama” can promote his “Big Ego” ???!!!

Ahaha! I look at the big picture. Whether you like to admit or not the fact is that our major allies (Canada, France, Germany) have replaced their SOCIALIST governments with right-wing-conservatives – oh yes CAPITALISTS, who like US very much.
I travel to Europe very often and am in a better position than many that never left the US to tell you what the current climate in our allied countries is – especially after the Russian invasion of Georgia.
Perhaps you should watch BBC World News (ask your cable/satellite company to carry it in addition to BBC America) or Deutsche Welle to get some serious news about what is happening in the world insatead of watching “mickey mouse news” on our 24-hour-news-for-dummies-networks.
How much our European allies trust and respect America is evidenced even more recently right in the midst of the global economic crisis. If you paid any attention, to which country did England, Germany France, Italy turned for leadership in the last few weeks? But of course to the United States of America! Have you noticed how much the dollar has surged against the euro in the last few weeks? Why do you think that it did? Because our allies know that after all is said and done in a global crisis situation it is the dollar and America that they trust. Our allies are not stupid to know that America will ne the first one to recover from the economic crisis. And that is because America has CAPITALISM not SOCIALISM – that Barack Obama wants to introduse to our land.
Left wing liberals – get a grip on reality. You have been listening to demagogue Barack Obama and his “pretty speeches” for too long! WAKE UP!

I have been trying to figure out what this saver’s credit is.
It looks like it is merely a match amount from the government (ahem, taxpayers) based on a credit (the Saver’s Credit) that already exists in the tax code. It is for individuals who have put money into certain types of retirement accounts: IRAs , 401(k) and others.
These types of accounts already are for those who have some type of earned income or in the case of IRAs, allow working spouses to put money aside for their non-working spouses. It’s really nothing new.
The “make work pay” credit sounds like EIC 2. With EIC you are required to have some amount of earned income. The Make Work Pay credit sounds very similar.
McCain wants to lower taxes and add a health credit that merely allows those who work for others to take advantage of credits that already exist for business owners. Not much change there.
Our tax code is in desperate need of FUNDAMENTAL change. Neither McCain NOR Obama’s tax plans offer either. They merely add to the pathetic patchwork called the IRC.
Finally, McCain and Obama can say all they want. Without Congress on board it will not happen. I am doubtful that even a Democrat-majority Congress will give tax cuts, credits, deductions to anyone EVEN those who have little.
And based on Biden’s speech the other day, I have no doubt that all of us will see our taxes increase: ALL of us.

It’s Zero’s big plan to bring back American JOBS from China. If Capitalism cannot do it, we might just follow up. Let’s follow the done-nothing-doing-nothing-do-nothing Zero to the idea society of from-according-to-his-ability-to-according-to-his-needs.

Those jobs are not coming back. Some reasons that those jobs left in the first place (hint: Not the infrastructure):
1. Lower cost of doing business due to lower living costs
2. Less regulation, hence less cost
3. Lower taxes, hence less cost
4. Leading to more favorable overall business environment.
It is a FACT that the US has the 2nd highest corporate tax rate after Japan.
Outwardly, China is VERY capitalistic.
And not all our jobs went to China. Many also went to India: The world’s largest democracy.
Seems to be working well for them. Let’s try it.
What do you say?

Posted by: Silly | October 23, 2008, 9:55 pm 9:55 pm

The problem I have with these tax credits is that none of them are likely to apply to me. They seem to favor families with children;those in college; workers who have traditional types of retirement accounts; and those with mortgages; and those with very low income.
Is this Obama’s idea of extending the Bush tax cuts for the middle class and allowing the ones for the wealthy to expire?
I am middle class. I am married but I plan to not have kids. I will never take on a mortgage. I have no plans to return to college (already have a BS and a JD. I don’t need anymore pieces of paper). As for retirement accounts, I have already figured that I can do much better investing in non-retirement types of accounts. At least I can move my money around without penalty. The rate of return would be the same or higher.
This just doesn’t seem fair to me. Where is MY representation on taxes? I’m about ready to revolt.

Planewizard: I think you are onto something. I was actually just thinking to myself, “how in the heck will he penalize them”?
Even if he finds a way to do so, they can do as you mentioned.
But I have actually wondered about a worse scenario (I have a bit of an imagination so if it seems totally far fetched well I warned you): The company simply refuses to do business in the US at all.
Although, the US is still a huge consumer market we are no longer the “only” one. A business that gets tired of excessive political bs could simply choose NOT to do business here once the costs exceed any benefit.
McCain (kinda) gets the realities of business. Obama not a clue.

Jim, I mostly agree with you.
But we need not wait 4 years. The mid-term elections come in 2010, but let’s not wait to take action till then. We can begin to organize and come together now. We need to replace those elected officials who have betrayed our Constitution and chosen instead to expand government in favor of their special interests. They are traitors to this country.
There is blame on both sides of the political aisle. There are Democrats as well as Republicans who have violated the oath they took to uphold the Constitution.
They ALL need to go.
Finally, good for you to find a silver lining and not give into despair or fear. Know too that you are not alone.

The EITC alresady covers payroll taxes for many families:
In 2008, the standard deduction is 10,900. The dependent exemptions are 3500. A family of 5 earning 28,600 has a taxable income of 0. They pay no Federal Income Tax. They still qualify for an EIC of $2360.00. Their payroll tax is 4,375.80. They pay half, or 2,187.90. Their net payroll tax, after the EIC is minus 172.10. They pay no income tax, no net payroll tax, and still get a subsidy of #172.10. You can not cut their taxes any more.
Ironically, Barack Obama is running ads that distort the McCain Health Care Tax Credit, by stating you will be left on your own to pay the new tax. The only people who who would be left on their own to pay a new health care tax would be those in the top tax brackets who have very expensive heath care plans.
If your taxable income is more than $357,700 a year, and your employer provided annualized family health insurance premium is 13,000; your tax increase would be 6 dollars and 66 cents. You would, indeed, be in your own to pay that.
For all those in the 25% bracket {65.100 – 131,450 AGI}, a family plan would have to cost $20,000 a year before there was a tax increase. I see no reason why the rest of the taxpayers should have to subsidize a policy that costs that much. There are working stiffs who do not even make that much in wages.

If the tax policy that you’re proposing that is the same policy that is in effect right now, (and has been for the past 8 years under your good friend Bush) was working then why is our economy in the sh&tter?? Why are more people than ever losing their jobs, and companies folding and losing money? You know why? Because the middle class needs a break so that they can spend some money and start to stimulate the economy once again. What you’re proposing is the same failed economic policy that is rolling us down the drain right now. No thanks, please step aside.

The fact that Joe the Plumber, around whom John McCain is building his last campaign stand, made use of welfare several times could really backfire on McCain once the news that Joe the Plumber was a grateful welfare recipient breaks.
Joe the Plumber admitted on FOX, no less, that he’s been on welfare — his parents “a couple different times.” The hosts quickly try to guide the discussion away from Joe’s welfare days because they are so focused on hammering Obama’s “share the wealth” message.
Does Joe not know welfare comes from taxes? Does he not feel any responsibility to, maybe, repay the favor?
Welfare is to help people get on their feet. I’m glad the program helped Joe and his family; I am not critical that his family needed to use the program. In fact, I am happy it was there to help him and many other Americans. However, Joe’s being upset because he has the potential to go from welfare to $250K/year and he may have to pay an additional $900 to help other families who suffer with health issues or job loss is almost incomprehensible.

McCain said that Obama will say anything to get elected?
To win the Republican Primaries, McCain said “I voted with Bush 90 percent of the time. Which is more than most of my Republican colleagues.”
Yet now it is McCain who claims that Obama is more like Bush, now that GW Bush ratings have dropped so low, McCain now claims that Obama is more like Bush.
Yep, McCain will say anything to get elected.

Seems like most of you are out of date and pretty much out of time.

The Obama/Biden campaign closed a loophole that would have enabled non-working home owners to claim a tax credit. That amounts to 1/2 to 2% of working americans. That’s the long and short of it. No more and no less.

I doubt if there is much of a seccessionist movement in Wasilla. When Palin took over as mayor, the long term debt was $1 million. When she left, it was $25 million. They’ll be looking for a “bailout” from the U.S.. She cost the residents as much per person as the Wall Street bailout cost America! Plus, they have a share of that too.

typos: you’re right. And it will be making a fashion statement too in it’s new clothes.

Look – the way the economy has been spiraling down the last couple of weeks, we might all be on welfare pretty soon.

I’m actually glad to see that Obama can change his mind about something when it is pointed out. But of course I don’t think that McSame is telling the truth. Seems he can’t!

Someone mentioned that China is a socialist country, they are only socialist in the way they treat their citizens. There are a full fledged Capitalist country when it comes to business, and they protect their own interests, unlike the US government.

Some straight talk. McCain’s proposal includes a 29% drop in corporate income taxes [35% - 25%)/35%]. Will Joe the taxpayer get this kind of a break? The problem is we are in for far worse. Has anybody paid attention to corporate income this year and the resulting loss of corporate valuation? The government will have less revenue without any corporate tax reduction. We’re hurtin folks. If nobody pays for nothin, then somebody has to pay for somethin!
