Michelle Obama on Leno

Aspiring First Lady Michelle Obama stopped by the Tonight Show with Jay Leno tonight.

On Wednesday, she noted, her husband is airing his 30-minute commercial.

"So he’s describing this to my mother.  We’re at the kitchen table.  And Malia sort of overhears it.  She’s 10.  And she says, ‘You’re going to be on all the TV?’ She said, ‘Are you going to interrupt my TV’…He said, ‘No, we didn’t buy time on Disney and Nick.’  And she said, ‘Oh, good.’  And she got up and walked away. She was just like, ‘Don’t mess with my TV.’"

Asked about the controversy over the $150,000 in clothes purchased by the Republican National Committee for Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, Mrs. Obama said, " I try to be as empathetic — I mean, especially a VP pick. It’s like being shot out of a canon, and all of a sudden you’re at the center of attention, and you want to look good."

That said, Michelle Obama distinguished herself and her husband from Gov. Palin, saying, "but our policy has always been whatever we buy for us, we buy, because, you know, that’s just been the way we’ve run things.  But, you know, it’s — you know, you’re  living in your home, minding your business, and all of a sudden, you’re on the national stage, and everyone’s looking."

I guess that $1500 tailored suit that her hubby wore for his DNC convention speech was just something they picked up at the local mall…eh?

Michelle,

“For the first time in my adult lifetime, I’m proud of my country.” – Michelle Obama
God forbid a journalist would actually ask her about what she meant by this. But, yet our mainstream media has done nothing but try to crucify Governor Sarah Palin since the day she walked onto the national stage. Michelle Obama’s condescension toward Governor Palin is sickening.
Also, to ABC’s great credit this is the best article yet on the blatant bias that has so sadly prevailed throughout this election: http://abcnews.go.com/Business/comments?type=story&id=6099188

The $1,500 suit that Obama wore was paid for by… Barack Obama.
The $150,000 suit that Palin wore was paid for by… The Republican National Committe.
And where did they get that $150,000?
From all of you republicans who sent them your hard-earned money.

Posted by: jojobo1 | October 27, 2008, 11:30 pm 11:30 pm

@Michelle- I do not mind that Obama may have spent $1500 for a tailored suit because it came from his pocket. The $150k used to buy Palin’s clothes came from campaign donations. There is a big difference. Ask some of the small donors who are mad that their money was used that way.

A lot of Republicans have been furiously attacking Sarah Palin.
Barack and Michelle Obama never did.
Very classy people. They understand how vulnerable Palin is in this race.

Posted by: reeves | October 27, 2008, 11:36 pm 11:36 pm

The difference between the Obamas and the Palins, is the Obamas pay for what they wear and where they go. If they can afford an expensive vacation, its because they both worked hard to afford it. For those that criticize them for moving up from lower middle class to a comfortable income level, your just jealous because either you’re too lazy or too ignorant to make the same move.

It would have been nice to see civil posts about one of the candidate’s wives. I guess it’s good the children weren’t interviewed.
It’s interesting they would prefer a former drug addict for first lady. Nothing like having role models.

Posted by: Jazzi | October 27, 2008, 11:37 pm 11:37 pm

Can you imagine the outrage that the wingnuts would have if this were reversed and the DNC had spent $150K on Michelle. Have you EVER heard Sarah Palin, the famous Christian, utter an empathetic word toward anyone else in this campaign? No. She does not have it in her. She would find a way to make it into some ver convoluted statement about Marxism.
Can you imagine the outrage there would be if black gunmen were planning an attempt on John McCain’s life? My goodness, Jake Tapper might even see fit to write a piece about it instead of the economic billionaire genuis who owned a football team. Thank God for Warren Buffett and Americans who have some common sense. I’m still looking for them in the media.

Both Michelle and Barack are professional lawyers. They both graduated from Harvard. Their combined income was over $2million. therefore he can afford a $1,500 and doesn’t have to feel guilty because it was their hard earned money that paid for it. By the way if elected to the White House, he will be paying higher taxes as well.

“Thank god for karma”, Obviously you and the author of that article have not been reading Fox news. If you had, you would realise they are 10 times worse than any liberal media outlet. They should be called “Faux News”. The “fair and balanced” bit is put there to make us laugh cynically. ABC is probably the fairest.

Jazzi – We have Republican ticket just bursting with role models. The addict/theiving first lady, who is the daughter and niece of felons, who made their fortune on racetracks and booze; the Keating 5 candidate who is close personal friends with convicted (and violent) felon Gordon Liddy and whose spiritual advisor thinks 70 million Catholics are agents of Satan; the VP candidate who was just caught in ethics violations, spent $150K of donor’s money on clothes and will be up for another investigation on her one-bid contract for a $30 billion Canadian (not American ) pipeline; and a husband who until very recently wanted to secde from the Union and whose friends have arsenals and STILL want to secede. But let’s talk about an idiot in Miami who is a billionaire and is afraid he desn’t have enought to get by instead. When are you going to cover the McCain/Palin’s friends? You’ve done 35 pieces on Obama. I want to know everything about Sarah’s church, from the witchhunters to why Alaska will be a place of safety in the end of days.

MyVoiceHere: Are you sure that Obama paid for that $1500 suit and not campaign funds? How bout that $800K trip to Hawaii this week to visit Granny? Was that one paid for out of his pocket too…or from the DNC? or from contributions? oh..no week long news story about that one eh? hmm..
Didya ever wonder how Obama was able to wander through Toot’s neighborhood all by himself without Secret Service protection right next to him for that video clip we all saw on the news? I mean, we all keep hearing how “threatening” the “racist” Republicans are….surely, just letting him walk past all those open windows didn’t just magically “happen”…OR, did they have to remove those folks from their houses for that photo op? Those houses sure didn’t look like rich folks lived there. So, the middle class was inconvenienced for a photo op. Nice.
I don’t mind one side getting tough questions and coverage….but let’s put all of the candidates under the same bright spot light. If Palin’s clothes are news, then Obama’s travel expenses, etc. etc. but what has passed for journalistic curiousity this election is laughable.

I’m pretty sure that if Michelle Obama becomes our First Lady, 90% of Americans are going to LOVE this woman after getting to truly know her.
I think a very attractive trait of the Obama couple as a Presidential pair is that both truly love meeting with and talking to all sorts of people. They embrace America. And America will embrace them.

What you said is so very true,
as long as you agree with everything they say.
If not, they may again ask the Justice Dept to prosecute not only you but anyone contributing to your group as well.
Your mail and trash may be thoroughly made public as well as anything negative they could find.
They may ask your daughters friends if there is anything negative about you or your family.
They may ask the IRS to review your returns through an audit or two or three or four.
Kind of like their supporting all union votes no longer being confidential and two days after a negative vote, two large men come to your home and kindly ask you not to make the same mistake again or your family may regret it.
But hey, we will love them.
Or else.

She means either they buy it, or Tony Rezko buys one part of it so they can afford the rest.
It is a nice sentiment, and it’s amusing that she chose to wear something affordable when she knew she’d be asked about it, but the Obamas made over $4 million dollars last year which is about 16 times what the Palins made. So yeah, the Obamas can afford to buy a lot of clothes.

How to incite a race riot.

How is it that McCain, Obama, and Biden can do press conferences and not Palin?
Is it that because she’s a woman?
Hillary never had any problems. Can you picture her responding the way Palin did with Gibson and Couric?
Unlike Biden, Hillary would have had license to utterly destroy her in the debate.
Like Bush, Palin is almost proud of her ignorance of facts and figures. She relies on folksy charm and generalities to the extent you feel you are watching a beauty contest.
Because of her staggering ignorance of foreign policy, constitutional law, supreme court rulings and the economy, Palin will never pass the presidential sniff test, unless you want George Bush with lipstick.

I will be glad to see Sarah Palin go back to Alaska. I am tired of hearing her voice, which grates on nerves, every time the news comes on CNN. I’m a registered Republican, have been all my life. Last week I received a letter from the RNC asking for a ‘desperately needed’ contribution. They even asked if I wouldn’t mind sending my donation along in the postage-paid envelope by applying my own postage. So I wrote a note saying sorry but McCain deserved to lose this one and returned it with an empty pledge card and let them pay the return postage. Yes, that’s how annoyed I am at them. (I’ll bet I’m not the only person to have done the same.)

She did not pick out the $150,000 clothes nor did she even go into the stores. They were given to her to use by staffers. The clothes will either be returned unused or given to a charity after this election.
And yes, she does buy many of her clothes from a consignment store.
Instead of talking about her issues re the economy, Dems use personal attacks like the sound of a voice or what clothes she is wearing.
Dems attack JM for being old while Obama is more concerned with redistributing wealth and changing our constitution to a socialist republic.

So, now, because of Mrs. Palin’s mistake, suddenly it’s wrong to earn money? Last I checked, even under the Obama plan, and even under the McCain plan, you still had the right to learn skills, utilize them effectively for a company that pays for said skills, and then cash or deposit the checks that said company pays you. A lot of us would love to earn $4 million in a year, but we don’t. That doesn’t mean that those who do earn that don’t have the right to use their money as they see fit. The way the facts lay out, when Barack and Michelle Obama bought clothes that they have worn during their campaign appearances, they did so with their family clothing budget. Now, $4 million allows for a much bigger clothing budget than I will ever have, but they did earn that money. When Sarah Palin and family bought clothing worn during campaign appearances (and how many of Obama’s children has the DNC outfitted this year?), they spent $80,000+ of RNC money. Tax money, donations, or whatever the source of those funds, unless donors specifically wrote on their check memo line “Palin wardrobe”, that money was not provided to the RNC to cloth the sudden VP running mate and his/her family. If the expenditure was necessary, at least they could’ve done it in a way that wasn’t so public. And I don’t advicate theft or misappropriation of funds. I do realize that our public expect candidates to look a certain way. If Sarah Palin had arrived on the campaign trail dressed for Alaska State Politics, the majority of the public would’ve thrown her to the wolves for not looking “Vice-Presidential” enough. So I don’t really have the biggest problem with some of the spending, I have the biggest problem with the vast over-spending in this area (and again, I still fail to see why the whole family needed all the clothing that they got).
Regardless of anyone’s position on ‘clothingate’, it won’t affect the bottom line on November 4th. Barack Obama will win the election for President, because most of America is really ready to reject most anything with the tag ‘Republican’ on it, especially in the national races. No ‘Bradley Effect’ to worry about, and certainly no Tennessee Neo-Nazis. John McCain won’t lose because he’d be a bad president, he’ll lose because he’s following a horrible president from his own party.

Michelle Obama would use her time on the Tonight Show 8 evenings before the election to defend Sarah Palin only if she were the most unintelligent future First Lady in American History!
I would like to believe Mrs. Palin when she says that after the election cycle, she will be donating any clothing able to be donated (you gotta bet that every politician that has ever campaigned has ruined at least one expensive suit on the campaign trail) to any and all applicable charities. And you know what? I am going to choose to believe her and her people on this. Not because she has earned my trust. She hasn’t been on the national political scene long enough to earn my trust, and most politicians there that long lie eventually. I believe her because she is between a rock and a hard place in this situation, and because I think that most people try to do the right thing when they can.
That doesn’t mean that Michelle Obama’s #1 topic of conversation on the Tonight Show or any other public appearance between now and November 4th should be the defense of Sarah Palin’s clothing expenditure. Mrs. Palin is telling everyone exactly what she intends to do about it enough times that she’s got it covered. And do you honestly think that if the roles were reversed, Sarah Palin would use valuable public time a week from election day to defend Michelle Obama from a bout of ‘clothingate’?

Taxing to pay for roads is fine. Taxing to pay for bridges is fine.
When asked to pay taxes just to redistribute wealth is new.
When Obama would rather raise a tax that he knows will REDUCE revenue to the government just to hurt you, that is new.
Socialism per wikipedia:
Socialists mainly share the belief that capitalism unfairly concentrates power and wealth among a small segment of society that controls capital and creates an unequal society. All socialists advocate the creation of an egalitarian society, in which wealth and power are distributed more evenly, although there is considerable disagreement among socialists over how, and to what extent this could be achieved
Has Obama said anything different?

Posted by: Dave in lv | October 28, 2008, 8:23 am 8:23 am

The Oracle – Finally, I’ve found someone else who gets it. All these people screaming socialism are enjoying the public roads, public schools, garbage pick-up, city police dept, etc.. Apparently, it only becomes socialism for these people when they are afraid a program might benefit someone other than themselves. Most people know very little about our govt or US history and ,sadly, probably wouldn’t take a simple business or marketing class even if the govt offered to pay for it for them.

Posted by: rigatoni | October 28, 2008, 8:25 am 8:25 am

Obama in a 2001 interview implies he hates our Constitution and our Courts because they will restrict his plans to redistribute wealth. Obama hates our National Anthem and wants to change it. Obama is going Socialist and plans to change the IRS into a welfare agency. Obama hates Oil (look for $7.00 a galon gasoline) and is against all solutions (nuclear, clean coal) except his (windmills which no one including Ted Kennedy wants to look at) which was reported yesterday to take 80 years to implement. Ayers, Kahlidi, connections hiding Obama’s terrorists PLO relations)…. Use our Brain – Vote McCain.

Posted by: Bill | October 28, 2008, 8:25 am 8:25 am

Dave – McCain wants to “share your wealth” in the form of a $700 billion bail out for greedy Wall St and in the form of bailing out irresponsible homeowners who bought homes they couldn’t afford with mortgage payments they knew they could never make. McCain also wants to start taxing every one’s health benefits. If you are worried about govt spending you should just try to get used to it. Bill wrote: “Obama in a 2001 interview implies he hates our Constitution and our Courts because they will restrict his plans to redistribute wealth.” …………That interview was really interesting if you listened to it all, and know the context of the conversation. Obama was talking specifically about the plight of African Americans after slavery, when there was a need for redistribution- they were slaves, they were owned, and had no property rights. And the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments were of little help even well into the late 20th century. Freedom with abject poverty, more because of the heel of a boot than of their own making. Obama talked about the civil rights movement relying too much on the courts (and I’ve heard conservatives say the same thing) and he said that there needed to be more emphasis on political will, on legislation, and on community organizing.
I personally don’t see anything Marxist there, and for FOX and Drudge to bring it up in the way they did is a prevarication.

Okay Dave, 1st of all, do you KNOW that Obama wants to be a socialist?? Or are you just regurgitating talking points?? 2ndly, have you ever gone to college?? If you did, you probably did what millions of people do, which is to get a fasfa loan?? By your estimate, that is socialism. Because your credit is not checked to get that loan. Its backed by TADA!!! The Government…

The comments here are so disappointing. I wish ABC would moderate more. Most of the comments have nothing to do with the article. The comments are mostly mean-spirited and angry. There is little humor or facts applied to the comments here. It’s ok to hate the Obamas or the McCains but the everyday constant unending venom does little to convert people to your opinions. And frankly if all you feel is hate, anger or rage, why not go to a blog with people that share your rage?

All this talk of Obama trying to redistribute wealth is obfuscation. Ever recall the phrase, “Trickle-down Economics” – foisted on us by not one but three republican administrations over 16 years… what do you think that phrase really means?

Is J CRew a donor??– “Obama’s corporate donor list looks like a Who’s Who of the Wall Street collapse – except some have given more to Obama. Lots more.
“The Obama campaign has just vacuumed up the money in this cycle, specifically from Goldman Sachs, Obama has received over $740,000, as opposed to McCain’s $220,000,” Krumholz said.
Not to mention that the former head of Goldman Sachs, Robert Rubin, is Obama’s chief economic advisor – and two current executives are bundling for him (David Heller and Bruce Heyman). “Bundlers” are mega-fundraisers who, critics say, get special access.
Another big Obama bundler is Citicorp’s Michael Froman. Obama’s even tapped him to help put together his new administration.”

To Rigatoni…
Way to use Wikipedia that some random yahoo writes…Our current government gives the richest people tax breaks, and leaves out the middle class. Their is the argument that most Americans get there taxes back. Under Obama’s plan, instead of paying in 35% over the course of the year, paying 25% (for example) leaving more in the pocket book. Apparently in your definition, socialists program are only ok for the rich who get more with tax breaks, as well as corporate america who still tow the line of 5.75 minimum wage and love every minute of it.

If she was any kind of nice person, she would have repeated what Sarah Palin has been saying for days and days. She DID NOT BUY THOSE CLOTHES AND SHE HAS NO PLANS TO KEEP THEM. THEY WILL BE GIVEN AWAY. But no, she and her whole group of scary candidates just let the lies go on and on and on and on.
———————
Why on earth should Michelle Obama defend someone she never met and who is a proven ethics violator and pathological liar?? And who are the folks that are perpetuating this story? Did you see the weekend rally with Idiot Hasslebeck? I think that pretty much says it all.

Posted by: FactCheck | October 28, 2008, 9:10 am 9:10 am

“Michel Obama claims she is wearing J.Crew Clothes. But that is not what she wore at the conventions or debates or other events. Plus she is not a VP candidate.”
But she did mention that they buy their own clothes. And bear in mind that the RNC was buying clothes for the whole Palin family. But Michelle certainly looked gracious to me, explaining how suddenly becoming the VP candidate would be different than what she and Barack have gone through.
Note though: There was Michelle, resisting temptation to bash Palin, and displaying empathy. Any examples of Palin resisting the urge to trash the Democratic ticket?

Posted by: billthomson | October 28, 2008, 9:14 am 9:14 am

So what if the Obama’s spent alot of money on their vacations or their clothes, at least that they can say that they paid for it with the money that they earned while working. Palin can not really say that can she when the RNC paid for those clothes. She could have said that she was going to wear her clothes, I do not want you to buy me any new things but she did not so what really does that say about her. She is the Governor of Alaska I am thinking that she had some nice skirts, dresses, etc that she could have worn. When they are making their own money they can spend it anyway that they want too. Just like we can. I will be voting for Sen Obama that is for sure. We need change in a huge way. This country is suffering, people are suffering and I really honestly believe that he is the only one that can fix this. I know he will not be able to wave a magic wand and everything will be over but I do know that he can bring this country on the right track again.

the government enacted a socialistic plan after world war II, then invested in their citizens – it was called the GI Bill and many say it was responsible for the following economic growth of this country.
you get a choice this year, continue the policies of investing in the wealthy and corporations hoping for trickle down – or – invest in ordinary citizens and hope for power up.
I voted early for Obama.

Whether Palin bought the clothes herself, or not, is irrelevant: she knew that they were ‘nicer’than her own clothes and made the decision to wear them. This was not smart, while her opponents were smart enough to not make the same mistake. The whole discussion is justified exactly because it underlines what a politically poor decision that was on her part.

Why is it 95%+ of the comments on this site ate rhetorical? This is from both sides. Does anyone have anything original to say? Or just rehashed nonsense?
Putting down Palin isn’t going to sway anyone – you either like her or hate her.
Claiming Obama is a socialist is over the top and ridiculous.
There are numerous reasonable positions that hurt and help each candidate, but no speaks of them in these comment sections. Is it because no one knows how to think for themselves and easy rhetorical comments are the best they can do? …That’s my guess.

Posted by: jc | October 28, 2008, 9:30 am 9:30 am

First, yes – Michelle Obama is a woman like me so I see her as a role model – I’m two years older than her. I’ve always liked J. Crew’s more formal stuff, but will look closer now because I want to copy some of her elegant cool style.
Second, just because people who work at big companies donate doesn’t mean they are donating for their companies. There is a line that asks where you work. It is very misleading to look at that as a indication of corporate support. But, on that note – McCain stated in the debates that the former CEO and founder of E-Bay would be on his team. Choosing highly qualified economic advisors is an indication of good judgement.
Third, Adam Smith the father of modern Capitalism is the source of Barack Obama’s economic philosophy and incidentally the philosophy of our entire taxation structure:
“It is not very unreasonable that the rich should contribute to the public expense, not only in proportion to their revenue, but something more in proportion.”
Adam Smith Book 5 of The Wealth of Nations

Posted by: MrsDi | October 28, 2008, 9:32 am 9:32 am

Let me add that as I sit here looking at the comments again – I suspect that most of the individuals who comment here probably couldn’t tell the difference between a logical argument and one that was rhetorical.
Does no one know how to critical think about anything anymore?

If one supplies facts in any respectable essay, they usually supply valid sources. Commenters here spout out facts that to be honest aren’t verifiable and rarely make any attempt at doing so. Using Wikipedia isn’t necessary valid either as some articles are either poorly written, have been vandalized or it is used out of context for political reasons.
Others try and make arguments utilizing comparisons. For example, without defending anyone – comparing Palin’s clothing budget to the price of Obama’s suit(s) isn’t a logical argument by itself. You need more facts that have a one to one relationship.
Am I the only one who sees this?

Posted by: jc | October 28, 2008, 9:51 am 9:51 am

Jake, I find it fascinating that Axelrod and Company (Obama’s “handlers” for the uninformed, and you have a lot of them here) persist with Palin’s clothes….probably because they wear larger sizes…..anyway, I have timed ABC’s time spent on this nonsense, and it is at least 800% more time on the lady’s clothes than the Obama’s million dollar house in beautiful Sin City, midwest…..all paid for while still paying off their student loans (per Michelle months ago). I guess someday we will read a line “what the media has wrought, let no man put asunder.” By the way, so far Mr. Teflon has said publicly that he is going to drop 25 million on the folks in New Hampshire and Iowa or someplace out thataway to help out during our financial crisis.

Just to point out: the Obamas’ income hasn’t come entirely from their jobs over the past few years. Michelle Obama was making somewhere in the neighborhood of $300,000 at the University of Chicago Hospitals, and Obama has had his Senate salary of about $170,000. However, his two books have been bestsellers, and they are the source of the high income. The Obamas received the standard, 50% faculty/staff tuition discount at the University of Chicago Lab Schools, so they haven’t had to pay full freight there. And until they were able to buy their house with the book royalties (and Mrs. Obama got a very sizable jump in salary at U of C), their home was a condo. They weren’t living high on the hog.
The word here in Hyde Park has always been that Tony Rezko didn’t buy Obama’s house for him. Obama bought the house, Rezko’s wife bought a parcel of land next door and then sold part of it to Obama. The reason was that the property on which Obama’s house was located was small and the Obamas wanted to expand it. The deal was a little weird — it reduced the value of the next-door plot — but there was nothing illegal about it. Chicago media investigated the matter eons ago.
Tina: I shop at J. Crew. I doubt Michelle Obama could find pants that would be long enough for her legs there, but she could certainly find many other items to fit. Many of her casual clothes do look like they come from J. Crew. Her Maria Pinto and Moschino dresses are expensive — that Pinto purple silk sheath dress cost $900 — but that’s far less than Cindy McCain’s $3,000 acid-yellow Oscar de la Renta affair. As for Palin’s temporary wardrobe, who cares? Michelle Obama was rightly gracious, because this is a tempest in a teapot.
Socialism: we already have some types of European-style socialism here: Medicare and Medicaid, for example. However, we NEED a national, universal, health-care system, such as Europeans enjoy, and high-income citizens — like the McCains and even the Obamas — can stand to pay a little more in taxes for the benefit of the country at large. Do we ordinary, middle-class people REALLY object to that? Because that’s what Obama’s “socialism” is all about.

Posted by: Michelle | October 28, 2008, 9:54 am 9:54 am

The $600M that Obama is spending is from folks like me who give on an ongoing basis. Hardworking people are giving to him not because we just want to see him waste that kind of money but We have enough sense to know that you have to outspend and outsmart the republican party and use everything they thought us in the past about elections to beat them at their own game.
We did it our way in 2000 and they stole the election because they had everything and everyone in place including the FL supreme court, FL government official etc..
In order for Obama to make sure they don’t pull out the same tatics, he needs money to have lawyers on the ground to stop the BS already going around in Early Voting, he needs the money to advertise in small towns that he may not get to go to or towns that really need to get to know him. He has to pay for the best and brightest.
I am glad to give him every dime because I know he is going to help ALL AMERICANs and not just the one McCain wants to support. So yes, he is spending $600million and it is well worth money spent. McCain is just mad he can’t spend like that because if he had the $ he would be doing the exact same thing.

Listen my friends, especially you Joe. The average IQ of the American voter is about 110 – and that is pushing it – so, the campaigns especially the republican campaign is appealing to the lowest common denominator. The ones who won’t fact check, the ones who think the moral minority is the correct and only way, the lemmings who will follow the leader off the cliff. If everyone check the facts and just voted for the candidate who lies the least, that would be an improvement over who they will vote for in a week.
I say where one senator or congressman actually is running on the “GOP” party and the local news went out on the street and surveyed people. Q: do you know who the GOP party is – A: no who
Q: do you know that the GOP is the same as the republican party? – A: NO
This is how uninformed the public is – only 25% of those asked knew they were one in the same -
The democrats unsuccessfully sued to get the candidate to at least admit in print/media that he was a republican
Deception is the name of the game – stupid voters are the catch.
For all of the registered voters who will elect our next president, chances are only 25% are well informed – Look what happened 4 years ago. 8 years ago – those who do not learn are bound to make the same mistakes again and again.

Barak & Michelle Obama are a class act that we certainly need in the White House. Sarah Palin has been nothing but negative since she came on the scene. What makes her qualified to be the VP, being the mayor of a small town, and a governor of a state with a small population, I don’t think so. She danced her way around the many questions she was unable to answer. Go Obamas!!!!!!!

Duh! Why are all of you comparing Mrs. Obama to Sarah Palin? Sarah Palin is running for VP not to become the 1st lady (or are there something that you guys are not saying). I have yet to hear about the $300,000 outfit Mrs. McCain wore during the RNC and the $500 plus FERRAGANO shoes McCain wears. I guess because they have it the way…huh. Now tell me who is the ellist. When you have it that way, how can they possibly understand the middleclass/dirtpoor folks? Please someone please tell me.

Stop concerning yourselves with what people are wearing, and how much they paid for it. And yes, I do understand that we must watch how money is spent, and I would like to be able to send my children to college in the future. But the bottom line is Who’s the Best Candidate to run OUR country, and have the American Peoples interest in mind. That’s why I’m voting Barack Obama.

Posted by: Mizpanda | October 28, 2008, 11:16 am 11:16 am

It would have been nice if the GOP had spent $150,000 to shoot Sarah out of a cannon & maybe they will rethink that now that she is reportedly trying to DISTANCE herself from McCain, picturing herself as the party’s candidate in 2012. The woman has an ego as big as her home state. If she could see into the future (probably too busy staring at Russia) she’d realize that she’ll be the scapegoat for GOP’s losing the election. She and her political career are like sooooooo OVER…

Michelle hasn’t suddenly been thrust into the spotlight as VP candidate from Alaska. Campaigns spend money where they need to. I wouldn’t want to see Governor Palin in flowery Queen E II matronly dresses. Her suits suit her status as VP candidate. The Obamas are very two-faced. On Leno, Mrs. Obama admitted their daughter didn’t want Dad to pre-empt her television shows, and yet his ad where Mr. Obama is in the classroom is about turning off the television and reading a book. Don’t mistake education for intelligence or being a good person. They are educated, scripted, bitter people. Keep it real America!

here’s the truth, we will never get along. No one is changing their minds after the election, we will be a nation divided. So all us pooor folks, need to wait for the re-distribution of the wealth (and that is EXACTLY what Obama said) I guess I need to take up religion, and start buying guns because Barrack told me too. Both candidates believe their own lies! McCain & Obama have neither one ever been “middle class” I wish I had the “jobs/volunteer” pay that put Barrack on the ballot. Fight as you may, both of these candidates are ridiclous, and if you vote for either one, you deserve what you will get. Let’s all become union and spread the wealth, the economic world will fail, and then all you know it alls will come begging to us country folk for food, fuel and everything else. Let’s see the candidates poop out some food and jobs….just remember, whoever wins, they have an uphill battle….good luck america…or maybe it’s good luck United Socialist States of America comrade? RayV, I buy clothes at J.Crew, and on your salary, which is higher than mine, you should have no trouble at all affording them. The last JC item I bought was a merino sweater for $78. At this moment, I’m wearing a pair of JC jeans that I believe also cost $78.
And whoever claimed that Michelle Obama wears clothes costing $100,000 for one outfit is either poorly-informed or a flat-out lunatic. Even Cindy McCain hasn’t been THAT profligate. The cost of the $300,000 “outfit” she wore at the convention included the quite valuable jewelry.

Who is better than Michelled Obama and Joe Biden, they may follow Hillary Clinton’s footsteps and become our future president?? It is America’s destiny. Maybe American people are smarter than that, Joe The Plumber, and all other business owners, will be punished and taxed, and they will not be able to expand and create more jobs. Obama is an extreme liberal leftist, the worst of the worst among the Democrats, even his philosophy is worse than Jimmy Carter’s economic policy. It is socialism, no matter what we call it, “spreading the wealth” or “redistribution.” Maybe we all are worshipping Obama, like a savior, or a cult-like leader, even the Muslim leader Louis Farrakhan declares him “Messiah,” in the tradition of our founding-fathers such as George Washington, John Adams and Abraham Lincoln??

I am surprised you even vote, because that may cause a fight. Grow up. Agree to disagree…I don’t think either candidate can put this country where it should be. Make other countries pay for food and money…and if they decide to fight…bring it on! What would have happened if our founding fatehers stood around talking instead of fighting….we would be a British outpost, or Mexican outpost….so be very thankful someone fought for you!

Posted by: truth1 | October 28, 2008, 1:55 pm 1:55 pm

The reason that it is important that everyone knows where campaign contributions come from is because large contributions can come with an expectations of returning a favour. The contribution can bias the candidate. This won’t happen with a donation that is under $200.
Secondly, everyone knows that if McCain got his hands on every persons name that is a Barack contributer, he would inundate them with robo calls and harassment to keep them from the polls. You can deny that, but that is the reason Obama won’t release the names.

Michelle is a classic, respectful lawyer, and your Sarah Palin took 8 universities to get a journalism something. Yet, didn’t help her at all to know certain terms of certain issues throwing at her. This GOP woman identifies with respectful Michelle Obama. Even some of our own called Sarah Palin: “a someone from lower couture.” The Europeans labelled her as “a half-baked Alaskan Nightmare.” Michelle Obama never said anything condenscending regards your precious Sarah Low Couture Palin. McCain’s campaigning aids did. I bet even the Alaskan mooses are happy she’s down here with you Thank God For Karma.

If the RNC chooses to dress Palin with their money and not illegally use campaign donations, who cares??? And to find fault that the Obama children watch Nick and Disney TV instead of having their noses in eductional books all the time because their father ran an ad that stated his views on education? Geez, people get a grip. We have different opinions over what should be done moving forward, but that doesn’t make the other side evil. What hateful kool-aid are you people drinking? In 7 days, we will vote. Hopefully in 8 days, we will have a winner. At that time, I really hope the citizens of the U.S. will come together and support the new president and work to get the U.S. out of the mess of our own making. Of the women embroiled in this campaign circus, Michelle Obama is the most intelligent, the most poised, and the most down-to-earth. Mrs.Obama has the least baggage and has the least negative things to say. Mrs.Obama is a dedicated mother, has no pretense for political gain, does not seek the limelight, and shares a loving relationship with her husband. Mrs.Obama has proved herself to be a leader by positive example, which this country needs right now. She will be a lovely and fitting first lady, has earned her own standing as a professional without ethics violations or fancy wardrobes, represents stability and even-handed empathy, and by all appearances promises to be an inspiration to us all for decades to come.

I would love to see Michelle Obama in the White House. I think she’s very intelligent and classy. People that say she’s an angry woman in my opinion are racist or at the least prejudiced against her because she’s black.
Hilary Clinton, who I actually like and respect is not that different from Michelle but Hilary is only seen as agressive NOT angry – why is that?

“Today we hear his comments about how carefully he, “chose my friends.” Marxist professors, ultra feminists, the foreign students, the chicanos, the active black students.
WOW! He chose to be friends with the extremes?”
Can someone please tell me how feminists (of any degree), foreign students, “chicanos” and active black students can be broadly defined as extreme and/or Anti-American?

>>Wow, 605 million dollars wasted in the pursuit of a 400K a year job. What a waste.<<
lol Must have a terrific Dental Plan!
There is no comparison between educated, wonderful wife and mother Michelle Obama and stone faced, pill popping, moral-less Cindy McCain. Now who in the world could stand to look at her as First Lady?? Not I! My whole family joined ranks for the first time and VOTED EARLY FOR OBAMA!
Let's have a peace seeking, intelligent President and a nice family in the White House for a change.

I won’t even be able to afford J. Crew once Obama starts his “share the wealth” socialism.

Hey countrygirl_74 – God hates liars huh? First of all I don’t think God “hates” anyone. And secondly, if Obama is a liar, what does that make George Bush?

Michelle Obama distinguished herself and her husband from Gov. Palin, saying, “but our policy has always been whatever we buy for us, we buy, because, you know, that’s just been the way we’ve run things. But, you know, it’s — you know, you’re living in your home, minding your business, and all of a sudden, you’re on the national stage, and everyone’s looking.”
What B.S. from Michelle. Well, guess what, Palin CAN’T AFFORD to buy the fancy clothes for herself and the other 6 members of her family. She doesn’t make millions like the Obamas. And, the clothes were either returned to the stores, or will be DONATED to charity – so No, Mrs. Obama, she’s not actually getting anything that she will keep for herself or her family. Michelle Obama also trying to twist people’s minds.

Love is but the song we sing,
And fear’s the way we die,
You can make the mountains ring,
Or make the angels cry,
Know the dove is on the wing,
And you need not know why,
C’mon people now,
Smile on your brother,
Everybody get together
Try and love one another right now!

McCain/Palin is the team that we need in the White House Not Obama/Biden and by the way since when Joe Biden likes Obama?

I agree – Michelle is just as good as her husband with “twisting words”. Boy, sure looking forward to 4 years of “twisted” politics!!! Go away Michelle!

If McCain is such a good pick, why isn’t there any endorsement or campaigning by Bush?

It’s nice to be thrifty, but now Mrs. Obama is 1st lady I would hope she gets some help with her wardrobe. Now she will be representing the U.S.A. she should look the part. Some of her outfits look as if they were mail-order

I did not see the tonight show, with Mrs.Obama as a guest, but clothes seem
so superficial when discussing the
presidency. Sarah Palin was bound to
fail because of jealously, and media.
John McCain was a lackluster candidate
who played kid gloves with Barack.
I guess it just goes to show you that
sometimes substance is only packaging
and words can be manuvered and relayed
in such a way, that it all sounds mag-
nanimous until you read the fine print.
