Obama Effigy Found Hanging from University of Kentucky Tree

An effigy of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin hanging from a roof in West Hollywood is matched by an effigy of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., hanging from a tree on the University of Kentucky campus in Lexington.

As with the Palin effigy, the Secret Service has been notified.

“It’s a very embarrassing situation that has happened on our campus, regardless of who did it,” said UK President Lee Todd.

Last month a cardboard effigy of Obama was found hanging from a tree on the Oregon campus of George Fox University. Taped upon the likeness was a sign that read "Act Six reject," referring to scholarship program for minority and low-income students.

Both effigies (Obama’s and Palin’s) are disgusting reminders that when hate enters the election, everyone loses.

For some people, it’s OK to hate as long as it’s the right issue to hate. But if they hate you, that’s another story.

I think the difference is that the Palin Effigy was hung on private property, as part of some sick person’s Halloween decorations.
The Obama effigy was hung in a public place. And, I don’t think it was done as a sick Halloween joke.
The fact of the matter is that there is a long historical tradition of hanging black men. Usually, first with an effigy, and then later in reality. This is well-documented fact of US history.
There is no real historical precedent for hanging white women.
I’m not saying it’s right to do either… But one implies a threat… and the other is simply tasteless and mean.

Posted by: blip | October 29, 2008, 6:16 pm 6:16 pm

Whoever is found guilty of these effigy hanging should face a felony charge of a hate crime. The legislation should also make these hate crimes punishable by a mandatory life sentence to deter would-be evildoers from perpetrating this dastardly crime.

ABC news is so Liberal Bias, I live in California and we have an effigy of Sarah Palin hanging as part of a Halloween display. But you don’t hear one peep about that.

If McCain doesn’t stop speading hate and disrespect, turning Americans against their neighbors at a time we most need to be united, history will judge him as the most self-centered and unpatriotic man ever to run for President. McCain and Palin have been pushing not just negative advertising, they have been pushing hate with devisive and nasty personal attacks of the meanest and most vicious kind. Not since the Civil War have Americans had to suffer from a Presidential candidate trying to divide our country (apologies to those who prefer to say “the War Between the States”). IF McCain does not change and change NOW, we will most painfully be forced to find him not only not heroic, but a cancer in America’s side. It tears at me that this man I once respected is trying so hard to split America and encourage hate. No one can hurt a united America. That is our strength today and always has been. But McCain is doing to us what no terrorist could hope to do. He is turning Americans against each other. This hunger he has to be President has turned him into a thoughtless, reckless politician with no conscience and no integrity. If you know anyone who can convince McCain to start loving America again instead of just loving himself, talk to them. This hate-fest by McCain and Palin should not be damaging us today, not when we have so many other problems to deal with. Everyone, quietly if you can, find some way to get McCain to stop this viciousness. He used to be a good man. There is no excuse for this.

Posted by: Jack47 | October 29, 2008, 6:17 pm 6:17 pm

Maybe they have the same excuse that the people who hung palin gave, um its hallowen you’re suppose to hang scary stuff? I dont agree with it just showing the hyprocisy. If only the crazies had put some pumpkins around him maybe it would have gotten to stay up cause its part of a hallowen display like the hanging of sara got to stay up.

Obama effigy was hanging at a University.
Can any of you neo-cons see a difference there and why the Palin thing wasn’t removed. Can you say private property.

Posted by: JR | October 29, 2008, 6:19 pm 6:19 pm

Blip there is no history of hanging white women? maybe not but there is certianly a history of violence against women so what’s the difference… husbands have had the right to beat their wives years ago. Violence is violence no matter who its against

Posted by: rachel | October 29, 2008, 6:20 pm 6:20 pm

If it’s freedom of speech to leave Sara Palin hanging, then it is freedom of speech to leave Obama hanging. It’s not ok to hang a black man, but it is ok to hang a white woman? This double standard by the media has to stop. It’s disgusting.

Posted by: LILLIAN | October 29, 2008, 6:20 pm 6:20 pm

Perhaps it’s these double standards on these issues that’s the true divider in this country?
ALL men are created equal, and in my opinion, the crime is the same, no matter who the victim is.
These effigies, need to STOP!!! It serves no purpose, but to show ones ignorance, and hate. Black , white, man woman. It needs to stop.

Posted by: Jeanie | October 29, 2008, 6:22 pm 6:22 pm

So JR are you saying that if I wanted I could hang a hundred Obamas, as long as they are in my yard, and the only way hanging a Palin effigy is wrong is if it is on public property. Or are you just trying to say that as long as it’s a Repub it’s ok. I see makes perfect sense in the two faced liberal world.

Posted by: samhiguchi | October 29, 2008, 6:23 pm 6:23 pm

It is okay to hang a palin effigy because she is simply just a woman. She does not matter. In the same manner when obama kept assaulting Hillary Clinton with sexist comments, our society is fine with that type of treatment of women. Teenage Pregnancies are up for the first time in years. Do you think that perhaps it is not good for a young ladies self-esteem to see two women beaten to death by the press? Or, see all the sexual comments that are accepted by our society? This primary season was the last straw for me. I will not do business with anyone who supports anyone who conducts themselves in that manner. I am so done!!! So, it is always open season on women. Didn’t all of you know that by now?

Posted by: obamanever | October 29, 2008, 6:24 pm 6:24 pm

Some of the people on here are crazy. to suggest no one would try to seriously harm a woman yeah right. I bet Hillary had talks with her now assisnated friend buhtto, just cause it happened in another country doesnt mean it can’t happen here.

Because Palin’s effigy is considered a halloween display and Obama’s is considered a hate crime (the only defense the person has for the Obama effigy is if he or she came out and said it is a halloween display and if its on private property)!

I knew it was open season on women long ago. I knew the media seriously disliked Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton. This week though ABC has seriously shown their true colors, while other outlets were reporting on the hanging Sarah Palin effigy, ABC was reporting on look a like Sarah Palin strippers. If this effigy of Obama hadn’t come to light, ABC would have never even mentioned the Sarah Palin one. DISGUSTING ABC!!!!

Jack:
I couldn’t disagree with you more. I don’t believe that John McCain encourages hate from anyone. I think that people are waking up and that they want someone experienced and not someone who served 173 days as a senator at the helm with all the chaos that is taking place right now. I believe that we need people like McCain, Arnold from CA, Barletta from PA, and Chris Carney (d) from PA, etc., etc. to form a new party called the Unity party. I think the two political pools are so tainted that they only way to solve it is to completely scratch them and come up with a new party. The US Constitution states that if the people feel the government is ineffective that they have the right to change it. I think the time has come. But, I don’t people like Obama connected to Dodd and other has been politicians. I like someone like McCain who rattles his on party. We need more of that today in our country. The time has come. I think they are pretty much wasting their money and time at this point with TV ads. It is like watching a rerun over and over again. We got it. We know how they think and whether we will vote for them or not. Personally, I hope McCain wins. The polls have shown Obama dropping slowly and McCain moving up in the polls and I am elated!

McCain is another Communist Republican Right regime and old guard of the cold war. He is a “tricky” Richard Nixon and McCarthy nothing on the paper Communist. He wants to continue Bush.Cheney tax cuts to distribute the wealth to the rich and rich corporations so they can send their income in out of country banks. If so, they aren’t paying their share of taxes which is so unAmerican and unpatriotic.

Jake, this is a clear example of false equivalence. Kentucky is part of a region with a historical record of lynchings of black men who sought political or social rights. Hollywood does not have a historical record of lynching women. Untasteful representation of women yes–lynchings, no.

This is an insane comment chain. I don’t know why I continue to read these comments when it only depresses me to know how many ignorant, unintelligent, uneducated people there are out there. Obviously both the Palin and the Obama effigies should be taken down. However, one is on private personal property and the law may not allow us to. The other is hung at a State University and would of course be removed promptly. Lillian, what double standard are you talking about with the media? Has anyone said that one is offensive and one isn’t? Did you just make that up? Maj, who said either was ok? Steve Vattimo, what are you talking about – it is all over the news! Any normal, intelligent person would be offended by both, while admittedly it is considerably more offensive to do to a black man, as was well articulated by “blip”. People, stop fighting each other, we need to come together as a nation and reclaim our greatness. We are soon to self-destruct if the anger, hostility, and venom we level at one another do not cease.

This is serious!
Gov. Palin, an elected official and possible VP of the United Stated. The Secret Service should act in a swift manner.
Obama, an illegal alien, should be deported. He is a citizen of Indonesia, refused to show his “original” birth certificate. He also has sealed his college records including his grades and thesis. Why? Was he a foreign exchange student? He has fought the eleven law suits regarding his lack of “natural born” citizenship, to be president.
Obama has never been investigated about his citizenship status, except by Howard Dean and the DNC. One of the lawsuits is now before the Supreme Court and many to follow.

The old saw about Obama not being a natural born citizen of the US is insane. He was never a citizen of Indonesia: he just resided there for a while with his mother and stepfather. Many Americans travel and reside abroad, that doesn’t make them foreign born upon their return stateside. Obama was born in Hawaii (and that’s one of the 50 states since before his birth) and is the son of a US citizen (his mother), period.
Mc Cain, however, was born in Panama (a foreign country) and was made to be considered a natural born citizen through an act of Congress.
Since no one in their right mind contest that his candidacy is valid, Obama is just as valid, if not more (remember: he, unlike McCain, didn’t need an act of Congress to be American born)

Anyone who thinks a white effigy is the same as a black effigy is obviously ignornant and not a student of history. A black effigy is a symbol possessing considerable more intensity and violence given our nation’s history of racial inequality and bloodshed against minorities.
Additionally, the white effigy was done by a private citizen. The black effigy is on the campus of a public university that receives funding from BOTH state AND federal levels.

Neither effigy is okay. However, it is the historical relevance of the lynching of a black man that makes one more disturbing than the other. Women have not been hanged in the US in large numbers for being women.
That said, it is accurate that these events should both be treated seriously. In this day and age, there needs to be civility. There have to be some limits to free speech when it ventures into hate speech.

I am so amazed at the Republican ignorance that I read here. One poster here claims there was “not a peep” in the media about the Palin effigy. LOL
How did this neocon find out about it if it wasn’t in the media? Every major network has covered the Palin effigy. In fact, they have given far more coverage to it than they did the racist fake mugging “victim” who was a PAID staffer in the McCain campaign.
Right wingers are VERY selective in their “outrage” at the media. They love FOX NEWS. FOX is the most biased news outlet in history. There has never been news as far to the left as FOX is to the right.
Oh, and in spite of what Limbaugh and Hannity are telling you, McCain is NOT gaining in the polls. While the popular vote is getting a little closer, the state polls that matter are getting wider in Obama’s favor.

OxyCon- As bad as I had to say it being a Democrat, you are right. Those that hung the one of obama will more than likely wind up in court with a felon charge against them. The press would have it no other way. It is not right that either hung them but we all know that they can do are say what they want about Palin or McCain but don’t even bring up a thing negative about obama or your life is in ruins. Maybe I will be able to vote for Hillary in 2012 but this year it has to be McCain/Palin. If you are a Democrat then it is time you ask yourself what you want this country to look like in 4 years. Do you want it to remain a world superpower both finanically and military or do you want it to just be another 3rd world country. obama will take us to a 3rd world no questions about that. Take a close look at what he has had to say about taking money from those who work and giving it to those who don’t and don’t want to. This year in protest of the Democrat party I will be voting all Repblican not because I support all thier policies but because I want this country to remain a free and open country.

Daniel T.- First off most of those on the right might not watch FOX news, I am in the center but have had all I can take of the way the ABC, NBC, CNN and CBS has been in bed with the obama. They have not ask him any hard questions and the easy ones they have ask he don’t answer but we do know he can tap dance really good. Now if you will look at which new center employees give to which party you might be very surprised that $0 went to the Republican party from FOX news Employee’s I think around $5,000 to $10,000 was donated to the Democrat party by Fox news employees but none to the Rep. party. So if it is so far right why would they even give a dime to the Democrats let alone giving only to that party. Most Congress and Senators will tell you as has been reported in a number of papers that FOX is the most balanced. So your little statements really don’t carry water kinda like obamas weath spreading around is not solicialist.

Liberal thinkers seem to want to suppress freedom of expression because it does not agree with their politics for whatever reason is deemed appropriate at the time (ie. historical, geopolitical, racial) Those Californians had no compunction about expressing THEIR public distaste. Why should anyone disagree with those in Kentucky?
In fact the entire “hate crime” issue is a bunch of baloney. A crime is a crime. Whether it is motivated by hate, greed, lust, power etc, it is still a crime. Or are as Orwell might say, “some animals are more equal than others”?

Robert, the Department of Justice just spent $33K taking employees to Hawaii to teach them how to lobby the Federal Government – when it isn’t even legal for them to lobby for 1 year.
This election is about health care, the economy, restoring our country as real leaders and not just thugs, restoring some intelligence to our discourse, actually practicing what we preach in terms of terrorism, torture, and, yes, Christianity and all true religions – and it is about restoring our government agencies who have been filled with people who owe more allegiance to their party than to our country.
So, I don’t believe for a second you were ever a Democrat – and if you were, I suspect the reasons you are for McCain. Obama is the only solution to the problems we have.
Palin doesn’t have long enough to figure out what the heck is going on – she clearly has no idea of the world, science, and other matters critically important to the safety and future of our country.
So stop with the holier-than-thou stuff. That dog won’t hunt, thank God. Change is coming and you will look back 4 years from now and be glad your vote didn’t count.
Keep that stiff upper lip, Mom

I am ashamed to say I live in Ky but I want everyone to know this…..not everyone in Ky is as ignorant as the person responsible for doing this horrible crime. UK is located mostly in a heavily populated black neighborhood so that is what really surprised me by it being found at the university. I hope they find who did this and punish them to the fullest extent of the law. Obama is the only hope we all have for this nation to survive and the color of his skin matters not one bit to me, nor does it to others from Ky that also support him. I am not racist nor will I ever be. White people doing these horrible crimes, like the white supremist arrested yesterday, never need to see light of day ever again. I totally admire Obama for having the guts to even want to be president because of the mess our country is in. Palin needs to be sent back to Alaska and I have lost all the respect I once had for McCain because of all his dirty antics. May God bless Obama & keep him & his family safe from harm!!!!!

Carolyn & Blip,
You made your points very well, kudos to you and a VERY small number of other people on here who seem to have some common sense. As a resident of Kentucky for over 20 years,(also known to others as Klantucky), I must say that although this is disturbing, I am not surprised this has happened here. The ignorance displayed on this site has only confirmed why things like this still happen.
There is a HUGE difference between public and private, please get that. Yeah, I’m sure the Palin effigy is just swinging with pride, right Robert B? Give me a break. Palin is not hanging because the media is biased against her– it’s still hanging because it’s on someone’s PERSONAL property, and as sad as that is, they have the right to keep it there. So tell you what, go take a trip to Cali, go bang on their door, and tell them to take the damn thing down, then you can stop whining about how bias everything is. You know you have the right to do that…right? And has anyone bothered to mention Mike Lunsford in Ohio, since Palin is just “a swingin in the wind”? He has an Obama effigy hanging from the tree in his front lawn, and guess what? It’s still hanging! Does that beat your double-standard???

Let it hang as long as Palin’s is hanging. Good for University of Kentucky!

I lived in Lexington and attended the University of Kentucky and have to say that at that time Lexington was a wonderful, progressive (liberal) city. We had excellent public parks in all the neighborhoods, many miles of roads with bike lanes, lots of small businesses, excellent public schools, very little crime and a wonderful sense of community.
However in the last ten years Lexington has changed dramatically due to the conservative movement there. Commercial development, big box business, and unchecked growth has destroyed much of the landscape, community and environment Lexingtonians used to value. Construction of mega churches and their “values” has taken over neighborhoods. Neighbors are divided by religion and politics and it just did not used to be that way. It seems that the sense of community, shared values, mutual respect and intellecutal pursuit has been abandoned and replaced by greed, mass consumerism, destruction of the environment and especially the catering to divisive religious groups in the area. I have been living in Northern Kentucky (extremely conservative) now for 10 years and I used to say that I would move back to Lexington in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, it seems that Lexington has been consumed and contaminated by the conservative movement as well. So please, do not judge all Kentuckians on this terrible incident. We are all not like these intolerant people. Do you remember when we all used to get along, cared about our fellow man and community and had “real” values, not the so-called “values” that the conversatives preach about?? Preaching and teaching hatred is just wrong! Well, that’s my two cents.

Yes, I misspelled “intellectual”. Sorry, did not proof, was in a hurry! So I guess this just gives all you “nice” people who did not know Kentucky had any universities more fuel! At least I admit it when I make a mistake.

When you hear “bigot” and “fear monger” and you feel like the attack is on you—this is a tactic to attack you just for being a Republican. It is no wonder that people don’y buy the “black” issues anymore. You know Democrats are with the party that supports the killing of babies that considers a baby a “burden.” They are in the party that makes references to Obama and Jesus in the same sentence. They are in the party that supports a candidate that said “typical white person” or stupid things like “I grew up around a healthy skepticism for organized religion and as a result so do I [have a healthy skepticism toward organized religion]” or who opposes things such as health savings accounts and school choice as he says they are like “social Darwinism.” All in favor of a government that will take care of everything for you. The Democrats are supporting a candidate who thinks a $3000 incentive to corporations will keep jobs in America—now that must be another Prank. Democrats listen, by the way, you must have heard your friendly candidate use the word fair. Just remember, I warned you when a politician says something is “fair” that is the clue he wants more money from you. Don’t throw you vote away get to know your candidate. Don’t fly on emotions—leave that for your wonderful Blogs. This race is not about race it is about freedom for all–freedom from Obama’s pursuit to complete social engineering and change the government. And he is starting with the constitution by making it into a “living document.” And he is planning changes and the Judicial would be changed to something altogether different..NOW THAT IS MORE SCARY THAN A STUFFED TOY BURNING IN EFFIGY! Does it not scare you that Obama has said that the “constitution is a flawed document…” And he was pointing out in the same breath that the judicial branch, the supreme court, was a “negative [agent].” He said essentially that he believed it should be able to do more than tell people what they can’t do. He more than allured to reparations! He wants to get rid of 401k’s, IRA’s and school choice. he calls these wonderful instruments “social Darwinism” So, lets continue with the truth for those of you who obviously don’t know your candidate: support the constitution:

Some of the comments on here are ignorant to say the least and point towards the very bigotry and favoritism that some of you say you reject. That is of course unless it’s coming from within.
If it’s disgusting. And hanging effigies of people is disgusting and ugly. Then does it matter race, religion or political affiliation? NO! At least it shouldn’t.
