Commenting on a new joint interview with John McCain and Sarah Palin, NBC News Political Director Chuck Todd described the Republican ticket as lacking cohesion, chemistry, and (he hinted) trust.
“There was a tenseness,” Todd told MSNBC’s Chris Matthews. “I couldn’t see chemistry between John McCain and Sarah Palin. I felt as if we grabbed two people and said ‘here, sit next to each other, we are going to conduct an interview.’ They are not comfortable with each other, yet.”
“When you see the two of them together, the chemistry is just not there. You do wonder, is John McCain starting to blame her for things? Blaming himself? Is she blaming him?” asked the widely regarded NBC newsman. “And maybe they don’t feel they can win right now, so they are missing that intensity. That was the thing that struck me more than anything. You almost wonder why they wanted the two of them sitting next to each other.”
The interview, Williams said, would air over the course of three days. And some actual news – beyond the body language – was drawn from the proceedings: Palin, apparently to her own staff’s surprise, promised to release her medical records.
“Both of these candidates are on the verge of pulling a Bullworth,” said Todd, referencing the late ’90s political classic about a pol who stopped spinning. “We are at a critical juncture inside this campaign for the McCain folks and that is who is trusting who? You have got people worrying about their reputations. Now you are wondering do the candidates trust the staff? Does the staff trust the candidates? This is a dangerous time in a campaign that is behind. They desperately need some good news because you do wonder if cohesion is disappearing on the inside.”

To those who spouting Socialist. Well, if Obama is a socialist, then McCain and Bush are bush-wacking Pirates, dressed in business suits. In league with those running some of the the large businesses these days with “golden parachutes”, with special note of the oil companies, car companies and the investment banks. All of them crying “deregulation, deregulation”, “self regulation, self regulation”, “limits to liability”, “limits to liability”, etc….
The American people are starting to tune out the Republican Party. And rightly so. I think the reason is obvoius – America as a Nation trumps the Republican Party. Many are starting to see through the Republican facade. William Buckley Jr. gets it, Colin Powell really gets it, but the Party Leaders and demagogues do not – especially people like Rush, Bush, Bachmann and and de Rothschild. The Party is so imbued in its own Propaganda, in its own sense of Superiority and Self Righteousness, that it has indeed lost its way.
The Party has something of a Maoist sentiment of being the ruling Party and the Ruling Class. In spite of the dissent of most of the Nation. Real Republicans need to seize the levers of the Party, tear it down and rebuild from the grass roots up. Its ownership is too centered in selfish ideological hands and its philosophy has gone Piratical; way too right wing. I think it is way out of the mainstream. For so long it has been there, and held its ground by moving the mainstream and demonizing the left. No more.
I believe that Republicans do not have a lock on conservatism – indeed, Obama is a true pragmatist and he knows that you need to be fiscally conservative to be more socially liberal. Otherwise it does not add up. He is not really a liberal. Obama and the Democrats also understand you can’t let the Foxes run the Hen Houses, and certainly not under self policing policies. And certainly not with limits on liability if they eat all the Hens and can’t replace them when caught.
Republicans today do not understand the concept of collective. This is mostly because they are the ones that are benefiting from the Caveman’s survival of the fittest ideas and the “ownership” society. They have the money and the power and they view and work politics to maintain it. They feel entitled and they pay lip service to social policies while generally demonizing them as being something unAmerican. When, indeed America needs to shift away from the extreme right wing to a more common sense approach.
Republican Party leaders and their rich backers want to keep giving the mainstream masses a wind up toy. A Bush, a Palin, a McCain or any Barbie or Ken will do. Just dress ‘em up and get ‘em talkin’ just like ole “Joe Six Pack” and “Joe the Plumber” whoever that is. Its sure not you or me. Let them think their leaders are just like you. This has kept the masses happy, while Republicans and cronies eat the Hens.
Of course, when the Hens are noticed missing, it will be someone else’ fault. Probably the Democrats somehow, it does not matter how, or someone in Iraq. No wait, it might be Putin, or possibly its Castro, no wait he’s almost dead, okay then, Chavez …… Or maybe that Muslim Arab Socialist African Malaysian Hawaiian and UnAmerican Obama…… And so the tomfoolery goes……..
Liberals are not socialists. The latter is a word sullied by dictators and megalomaniacs. Theirs’ is a false concept of socialism, used for selfish gain and to keep the masses poor and in chains. As McCain has said – strong backs, or the backbone of America is that American laborer. A back strong enough to carry the malarkey called Republican Conservatism or, I think, Piratical Conservative is more fitting.
There is no stronger Nation than one with a well run economic engine. One that is fairly and sensibly regulated. One that shares the wealth equitably. One that is built on morally sound incentive systems for its operators. One with a collective advancement and support system for all its members.
Republicans as much or more than any others will tell you that you don’t send into battle men without protection and weapons. You don’t send men that are unskilled and untrained in the use of weapons. You don’t win battles by leaving your compatriots unprotected. And you don’t leave the weak and wounded behind. Their rescue is the mark of heroes. If its heroic in the battlefields of war, why not so in the battlefields of life?
America is indeed headed for a brighter future with Obama than with McCain.

Remember Bush McCain’s “MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!” theatrics.

Would the Last Honest Reporter Please Turn On the Lights?

An open letter to the local daily paper — almost every local daily paper in America:
I remember reading All the President’s Men and thinking: That’s journalism. You do what it takes to get the truth and you lay it before the public, because the public has a right to know.
This housing crisis didn’t come out of nowhere. It was not a vague emanation of the evil Bush administration.
It was a direct result of the political decision, back in the late 1990s, to loosen the rules of lending so that home loans would be more accessible to poor people. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were authorized to approve risky loans.
What is a risky loan? It’s a loan that the recipient is likely not to be able to repay.
The goal of this rule change was to help the poor — which especially would help members of minority groups. But how does it help these people to give them a loan that they can’t repay? They get into a house, yes, but when they can’t make the payments, they lose the house — along with their credit rating.
They end up worse off than before.
This was completely foreseeable and in fact many people did foresee it. One political party, in Congress and in the executive branch, tried repeatedly to tighten up the rules. The other party blocked every such attempt and tried to loosen them.
Furthermore, Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae were making political contributions to the very members of Congress who were allowing them to make irresponsible loans. (Though why quasi-federal agencies were allowed to do so baffles me. It’s as if the Pentagon were allowed to contribute to the political campaigns of Congressmen who support increasing their budget.)
Isn’t there a story here? Doesn’t journalism require that you who produce our daily paper tell the truth about who brought us to a position where the only way to keep confidence in our economy was a $700 billion bailout? Aren’t you supposed to follow the money and see which politicians were benefiting personally from the deregulation of mortgage lending?
I have no doubt that if these facts had pointed to the Republican Party or to John McCain as the guilty parties, you would be treating it as a vast scandal. “Housing-gate,” no doubt. Or “Fannie-gate.”
Instead, it was Senator Christopher Dodd and Congressman Barney Frank, both Democrats, who denied that there were any problems, who refused Bush administration requests to set up a regulatory agency to watch over Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and who were still pushing for these agencies to go even further in promoting sub-prime mortgage loans almost up to the minute they failed.
As Thomas Sowell points out in a TownHall.com essay entitled “Do Facts Matter?” ( http://snipurl.com/457townhall_com ): “Alan Greenspan warned them four years ago. So did the Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers to the President. So did Bush’s Secretary of the Treasury.”
These are facts. This financial crisis was completely preventable. The party that blocked any attempt to prevent it was … the Democratic Party. The party that tried to prevent it was … the Republican Party.
Yet when Nancy Pelosi accused the Bush administration and Republican deregulation of causing the crisis, you in the press did not hold her to account for her lie. Instead, you criticized Republicans who took offense at this lie and refused to vote for the bailout!
What? It’s not the liar, but the victims of the lie who are to blame?
Now let’s follow the money … right to the presidential candidate who is the number-two recipient of campaign contributions from Fannie Mae.
And after Freddie Raines, the CEO of Fannie Mae who made $90 million while running it into the ground, was fired for his incompetence, one presidential candidate’s campaign actually consulted him for advice on housing.
If that presidential candidate had been John McCain, you would have called it a major scandal and we would be getting stories in your paper every day about how incompetent and corrupt he was.
But instead, that candidate was Barack Obama, and so you have buried this story, and when the McCain campaign dared to call Raines an “adviser” to the Obama campaign — because that campaign had sought his advice — you actually let Obama’s people get away with accusing McCain of lying, merely because Raines wasn’t listed as an official adviser to the Obama campaign.
You would never tolerate such weasely nit-picking from a Republican.
If you who produce our local daily paper actually had any principles, you would be pounding this story, because the prosperity of all Americans was put at risk by the foolish, short-sighted, politically selfish, and possibly corrupt actions of leading Democrats, including Obama.
If you who produce our local daily paper had any personal honor, you would find it unbearable to let the American people believe that somehow Republicans were to blame for this crisis.
There are precedents. Even though President Bush and his administration never said that Iraq sponsored or was linked to 9/11, you could not stand the fact that Americans had that misapprehension — so you pounded us with the fact that there was no such link. (Along the way, you created the false impression that Bush had lied to them and said that there was a connection.)
If you had any principles, then surely right now, when the American people are set to blame President Bush and John McCain for a crisis they tried to prevent, and are actually shifting to approve of Barack Obama because of a crisis he helped cause, you would be laboring at least as hard to correct that false impression.
Your job, as journalists, is to tell the truth. That’s what you claim you do, when you accept people’s money to buy or subscribe to your paper.
But right now, you are consenting to or actively promoting a big fat lie — that the housing crisis should somehow be blamed on Bush, McCain, and the Republicans. You have trained the American people to blame everything bad — even bad weather — on Bush, and they are responding as you have taught them to.
If you had any personal honor, each reporter and editor would be insisting on telling the truth — even if it hurts the election chances of your favorite candidate.
Because that’s what honorable people do. Honest people tell the truth even when they don’t like the probable consequences. That’s what honesty means . That’s how trust is earned.
Barack Obama is just another politician, and not a very wise one. He has revealed his ignorance and naivete time after time — and you have swept it under the rug, treated it as nothing.
Meanwhile, you have participated in the borking of Sarah Palin, reporting savage attacks on her for the pregnancy of her unmarried daughter — while you ignored the story of John Edwards’s own adultery for many months.
So I ask you now: Do you have any standards at all? Do you even know what honesty means?
Is getting people to vote for Barack Obama so important that you will throw away everything that journalism is supposed to stand for?
You might want to remember the way the National Organization of Women threw away their integrity by supporting Bill Clinton despite his well-known pattern of sexual exploitation of powerless women. Who listens to NOW anymore? We know they stand for nothing; they have no principles.
That’s where you are right now.
It’s not too late. You know that if the situation were reversed, and the truth would damage McCain and help Obama, you would be moving heaven and earth to get the true story out there.
If you want to redeem your honor, you will swallow hard and make a list of all the stories you would print if it were McCain who had been getting money from Fannie Mae, McCain whose campaign had consulted with its discredited former CEO, McCain who had voted against tightening its lending practices.
Then you will print them, even though every one of those true stories will point the finger of blame at the reckless Democratic Party, which put our nation’s prosperity at risk so they could feel good about helping the poor, and lay a fair share of the blame at Obama’s door.
You will also tell the truth about John McCain: that he tried, as a Senator, to do what it took to prevent this crisis. You will tell the truth about President Bush: that his administration tried more than once to get Congress to regulate lending in a responsible way.
This was a Congress-caused crisis, beginning during the Clinton administration, with Democrats leading the way into the crisis and blocking every effort to get out of it in a timely fashion.
If you at our local daily newspaper continue to let Americans believe — and vote as if — President Bush and the Republicans caused the crisis, then you are joining in that lie.
If you do not tell the truth about the Democrats — including Barack Obama — and do so with the same energy you would use if the miscreants were Republicans — then you are not journalists by any standard.
You’re just the public relations machine of the Democratic Party, and it’s time you were all fired and real journalists brought in, so that we can actually have a news paper in our city.

I love hearing these comments. I guess people don’t know who really run the country. President do not make law. Congress does. So if Obama win this election it not going to make any real different because we are going down that same old street again with the same old men and women who been running this country for years. I just feel sorry for Obama he getting ready to be blame for everything here soon and he will have no real choice in the furture but to raise taxes. We are going to have to either cut programs or raise taxes to get out of debt. Something both McCain and Obama are not ready to admit to yet. Read your history book and look at the events that led up to 1929. It can happen again and the party in charge at the time was booted out in 4 year and never recover for 30 year. Well we are not yet at that stage yet but the next president just might inherited itthat same situation. Just as Hoover did.

This just goes to show that John McCain will say anything to get elected.

The Last Two Years

The Obama/Biden ticket’s entire campaign theme is based on “the last eight years.” Maybe we should really look at “the last two years,” or the time period when both the House and the Senate were run by Democrats.
In December 2006, after six years of Bush and the last month before the Democrats took over both houses of the national legislature, a snapshot of our economy looked like this.
Unemployment stood at 4.4%.
Real GDP growth over the previous four years (under a Republican President, House and Senate) averaged 3% per year.
A gallon of regular gasoline cost $2.30.
The S&P 500 stock index stood at 1418, or 84% above its post-911 low and more than 7% higher than when Bush took office.
Every year of Bush’s Presidency, real (inflation-adjusted) disposable income per person went up. By the end of 2006, the average person was making 9% more in real terms than before Bush became President .
If you recall, that 2006 election was considered a referendum on Iraq. The people wanted change, so they threw out the Republicans and replaced them with Democrats. Welcome Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi.
Here is how they handled Iraq once in office: Harry Reid told us that the Iraq war was “lost” and the surge was not “accomplishing anything.” Senator Obama introduced legislation that would have prevented the surge and would have taken all US troops out of Iraq by March 2008 (that would be seven months ago, as you read this) .
Were they right?
Barack Obama now admits that “the surge succeeded.” So much for that change. And as the surge succeeded, Congress’s approval ratings plummeted. The latest CBS/New York Times poll has it at 12%, well less than half of the already low level it stood at when the Republican Congress was being tossed out in 2006.
The Democratic Congress did a great job, if what you’re looking for in a Congress is continual investigation of Republicans. Did the White House out CIA agent Valerie Plame? No, it was the anti-White House Richard Armitage at State, but Congress investigated anyway. Did Alberto Gonzalez, with White House urging, fire nine prosecutors for political reasons? Probably not, and it wouldn’t be a crime anyway, but Congress investigated, and is still investigating. Did the CIA, under orders from the White House, “torture” prisoners? No evidence of that yet, but Congress is on the case.
What Congress would not investigate was anything about Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. In fact, they fought against such investigations and cast aspersions against anyone who would even doubt the soundness of those institutions. Here is what Barney Frank said:
These two entities, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, are not facing any kind of financial crisis. The more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing.
You can also see on video (see video URL below) how Democrats treated the regulators trying to reign in Fannie and Freddie.
But now we know what happened. Fannie and Freddie were run corruptly and ineptly and went bankrupt. Their $1.5 trillion portfolios had to be rescued by the government this year. Franklin Raines, the Clinton-appointed CEO of Fannie Mae who was vigorously defended by Congressional Democrats, was sued by government regulators for cooking the books to the tune of $10 billion to increase his own bonuses to the tune of tens of millions. He settled his suit for an estimated $25 million.
On the other hand, here is what the New York Times had to say in 2003 .
The Bush administration is rightly pushing for the Treasury Department to regulate the two giants, along with the network of federal home loan banks. Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae provide financing to lenders by creating a secondary market for mortgages. All told, these two institutions’ debt portfolio exceeds more than $1.5 trillion. Their current regulator is ill equipped to keep tabs on Freddie’s and Fannie’s sophisticated hedging strategies and the other financial moves they use to manage their huge investments.
And here is what John McCain said on the Senate floor:
For years I have been concerned about the regulatory structure that governs Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac… I join as a cosponsor of the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, S. 190, to underscore my support for quick passage of GSE regulatory reform legislation. If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole.
So on the big things, the surge in Iraq and the failure of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac that led to our recent financial mess, the Democrats were wrong. Dead wrong. One hundred eighty degrees out wrong.
On the other hand, who supported the surge? George W. Bush and John McCain.
Who tried to strengthen the oversight and regulation of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac? George W. Bush and John McCain.
In the case of the surge, Bush and McCain got their way. The result? Apparent victory in Iraq, a country that is now a democracy, at peace with its neighbors, no longer a WMD threat, no longer a terrorist sanctuary, and no longer filling hundreds of mass graves with hundreds of thousands of its own citizens.
In the case of Fannie and Freddie, Bush and McCain did not get their way – Barney Frank did. The result? The failure of Fannie and Freddie, law suits against their executives and the spark that sent banks failing and stocks falling across the globe to the point of threatening a Great Depression.
Let’s vote for change. Let’s undo what we did in 2006.

This is probably the most important election of our lives. As the Republican party tends more and more towards honest-to-goodness facism, this could be our last chance to save our democracy.

As an engineer overseas in the oil business, my taxes went up under the Republican watch. (Yeah, ok, I make a lot of money and work hard for it.) I expect they will go up again under the next presidency. Probably not enough to make me look for other work so I’ll pay those too. As an American it is my responsibility to pay those taxes (so Joe plumber, if JM or the networks haven’t helped you out yet, please ante up that 1200 bucks).
What swings my vote to the Democrats (negative campaigning aside) was the choice of Palin as VP. I just cannot figure it out and I certainly can’t vote for it.

Can you ask the Senator to provide:
1. His transcripts at Occidental.
2. His transcripts at Columbia and at least show some of his friends.
3. His thesis at Harvard. Any writing?
4. Any student loans records?
You know these colleges aren’t CHEAP!
Obama did not attend these colleges on scholarships.

And of course the reverse is also true — under the ultimate “equality and fairness” plan (Cuba, USSR, etc), the $20,000 person goes to $5,000, while the $200,000 person also goes to $5,000. So now the $5,000 per year person has “won” under the fairness and equality doctrine. Congratulations! Plaintiff ANDY MARTIN (‘Plaintiff’), pro se, respectfully moves this Court on an emergency basis for an Order to Show Cause (‘OSC’) directing the defendants to show cause on or before October 22, 2008 at a hearing before this Court why the relief requested by the Plaintiff should not be granted.

4. There is intense national interest in access to an officially certified copy of the birth certificate of Barry Soweto AKA Barack Hussein Obama in question as well as any related supporting information which the defendants may have in their possession.
STATEMENT OF CLAIM
1. Plaintiff requested a certified copy of the birth certificate of Senator Obama from the Department of Health and tendered the requisite fee.
2. Defendants refused to provide a copy of said certificate, invoking the confidentiality statutes of the State.
3. The issue of the Senator’s birth certificate has become a controversial topic of intense national speculation.
4. As an author who strives for factual accuracy and attempts to conduct thorough research Plaintiff wants a copy of the Senator’s birth certificate attested to by the State and not a ‘certificate’ which is posted on a web site and which has been debunked as possibly having been altered.
5. One of the more literate and temperate analyses of the unlawfulness of the Defendants’ refusal to issue certified copies of the birth certificate is contained in Exhibit 1 attached hereto.
6. To the extent that the Defendants’ files contain or retain original supporting data for the birth certificate, Plaintiff asks that he also be supplied with that information and/or material as well.
7. It is axiomatic that the birth certificate of a presidential candidate is a document of crucial public concern and significance.
8. While Hawai’i statutes call for a balancing or weighing test where production is considered by a court, most respectfully Plaintiff submits that the balance falls entirely on the side of disclosure where the original birth certificate of a presidential candidate is concerned.

In the best tradition of Bill Clinton’s declaration that the answer to the question of whether he was having an affair depended on “what the definition of is is,” Sen. Barack Obama was clearly concealing the truth when he said that William Ayers was “just a guy who lives in my neighborhood.”
The Ayers-Obama connection was, in fact, an intimate collaboration that it led to the only executive or administrative experience in Obama’s life.
After Walter Annenberg’s foundation offered several hundred million dollars to American public schools in the mid-’90s, Ayers applied for $50 million for Chicago. His purpose was to “raise political consciousness” in schools.
After he won the grant, Ayers’ group chose Obama to distribute the $50 million, and the future senator raised another $60 million from other civic groups to augment it. In doing so, he was following Ayers’ admonition to grant the funds to “external” organizations, like American Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), to pair with schools and conduct programs to radicalize and politicize the students.
Reading, math and science achievement tests counted for little in the grants, but the school’s success in preaching a radical agenda determined how much money it got.
Obama should have run screaming at the sight of Ayers and his wife, Bernardine Dohrn. Ayers has admitted bombing the U.S. Capitol and the Pentagon, and his wife was imprisoned for failing to cooperate in solving the robbery of a Brink’s car in which two police were killed. Far from remorse, Ayers told The New York Times [NYT], in September 2001, that he wished he “could have done more.” Ayers only avoided conviction when the evidence against him turned out to be contained in illegal wiretaps. He was, in fact, guilty as sin.
So let’s sum up Obama’s Chicago connections. His chief financial supporter was Tony Rezko, now on his way to prison. His spiritual adviser was the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, of “God damn America” fame. And the guy who got him his only administrative job is former terrorist Ayers.
Not a good recommendation for a president.

Problems with endorsing Obama

My, my. In their dumbfounding endorsement of Barack Obama, it seems to me that members of the Tribune’s editorial board must not have first read some pages in their own paper. Obama’s negatives have been cited ad nauseam, so I won’t repeat all of them. But there are some downsides in his candidacy that were not addressed in the unpersuasive endorsement statement, and they are a big deal to me. They include:
• The senator is a radical socialist with stated preferences for the Marxist notion of redistributing the wealth. Does the editorial board want the U.S. to morph into the socialist model of a dying Europe? Does it want our culture destroyed?
• With the likely veto-proof Democrat majority in Congress, a President Obama will have the opportunity to name justices to the U.S. Supreme Court. Is it the desire of the editorial board to have a leftist majority on that bench to creatively rewrite the Constitution and restructure society without regard to what citizens may think?
• Much closer to home, the editorial board has observed the wonderful things that happen in Illinois when one party controls Chicago, Cook County and the state. Does the editorial board want the entire nation governed as miserably as is Illinois with Democrats controlling the White House, Congress and the judiciary?
I don’t advocate any of these destructive directions for our country.

Obama’s Tax Plan Is Really a Welfare Plan
Barack Obama’s tax plan is the opposite of supply-side economics. He proposes to raise marginal rates for just about every federal tax. He also proposes a raft of tax credits that taxpayers can receive if they engage in various government-specified activities.
Moreover, the tax credits would mostly go to those who pay little or nothing in federal income taxes. His trick is to make the tax credits “refundable.” Thus, if the tax credit is for $1,000, but the taxpayer would otherwise only pay $200 in taxes, the government would write a check to the taxpayer for $800. If the taxpayer pays nothing in federal income taxes, the government would pay him the whole $1,000.
Such credits are not tax cuts. Indeed, they should be called The New Tax Welfare. In effect, Mr. Obama is proposing to create or expand a slew of government spending programs that are disguised as tax credits. The spending on these programs is then subtracted from the total tax burden, in order to make the claim that his tax plan is a net tax cut overall.
On the tax side of the ledger, the details released by his campaign last week confirm what a President Obama has in mind for our most productive citizens. The top individual income tax rate, for example, would be increased by 13%, to 39.6%; the next-highest rate would be raised to 36%. The top rates on capital gains and dividends would rise by a third, to 20%
The Social Security payroll tax would be raised between 16% to 32% for families making over $250,000 a year. This means that the real returns these people get from their lifetime payments into the retirement program will be driven below 0%, according to my own previous research, which was published by the Cato Institute and elsewhere.
Mr. Obama also wants a permanent federal estate tax, with a top rate of 45%; his health-insurance plan includes a new payroll tax on employers; and he also contemplates several increases in the corporate income tax, including a new so-called windfall profits tax on oil companies.
Then there is the spending side of the ledger. Mr. Obama proposes a fully refundable Making Work Pay Tax Credit, which would have the government pay out $500 to each worker and $1,000 to couples — reminiscent of George McGovern’s 1972 election proposal for the government to send a $1,000 check to everyone.
His American Opportunity Tax Credit would provide a $4,000, fully refundable tax credit for college tuition expenses. His Mortgage Interest Tax Credit would provide a 10% credit — refundable — to offset mortgage interest payments for lower- and middle-income families. His Health Care Tax Credits, which the campaign says “will ensure that health insurance is available and affordable for all families,” include “a new refundable 50 percent health tax credit on employee premiums paid by employers.”
Currently existing tax credits would also become spending programs in the Obama tax program. The Savers Credit would be made fully refundable, and would be expanded, according to the campaign, “to match 50% of the first $1,000 of savings for families that earn under $75,000.” The Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit would be made refundable and expanded to allow “low-income families to receive up to a 50 percent credit on the first $6,000 of child care expenses.”
The Earned Income Tax Credit is already refundable. Mr. Obama would expand it to “increase the number of working parents eligible for EITC benefits, increase the benefits available to noncustodial parents who fulfill their child support obligations, increase benefits for families with three or more children, and reduce the EITC marriage penalty, which hurts low-income families.” In short, welfare spending is to be increased by paying more money out to low-income income tax filers.
The latest Congressional Budget Office data shows the bottom 40% of income earners already pays no income taxes. Indeed, they receive a net payment from the federal income tax system — meaning from the taxpayers — equal to 3.8% of all federal income taxes, because of the refundable tax credits under current law. The middle 20% of income earners, the true middle class, pays 4.4% of federal income taxes.
Overall, the bottom 60% of income earners pay less than 1% of federal income taxes on net. When “tax credits” primarily go to this group in the form of checks from the government (rather than a reduction in their tax burden) it is simply an abuse of the language to call the spending a tax cut.
Consequently, to say, as the campaign does say, that the candidate’s tax plan is a tax cut on net — and that it would limit taxes to 18.2% of GDP — is grossly misleading. The Obama tax plan would sharply increase real taxes. It also would come nowhere near to paying for the massive increases in federal spending he has proposed, including the spending that is disguised in the form of refundable tax credits.

Mr. McCAIN. Mr. President, this week Fannie Mae’s regulator reported that the company’s quarterly reports of profit growth over the past few years were “illusions deliberately and systematically created” by the company’s senior management, which resulted in a $10.6 billion accounting scandal.
The Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight’s report goes on to say that Fannie Mae employees deliberately and intentionally manipulated financial reports to hit earnings targets in order to trigger bonuses for senior executives. In the case of Franklin Raines, Fannie Mae’s former chief executive officer, OFHEO’s report shows that over half of Mr. Raines’ compensation for the 6 years through 2003 was directly tied to meeting earnings targets. The report of financial misconduct at Fannie Mae echoes the deeply troubling $5 billion profit restatement at Freddie Mac.
The OFHEO report also states that Fannie Mae used its political power to lobby Congress in an effort to interfere with the regulator’s examination of the company’s accounting problems. This report comes some weeks after Freddie Mac paid a record $3.8 million fine in a settlement with the Federal Election Commission and restated lobbying disclosure reports from 2004 to 2005. These are entities that have demonstrated over and over again that they are deeply in need of reform.
For years I have been concerned about the regulatory structure that governs Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac–known as Government-sponsored entities or GSEs–and the sheer magnitude of these companies and the role they play in the housing market. OFHEO’s report this week does nothing to ease these concerns. In fact, the report does quite the contrary. OFHEO’s report solidifies my view that the GSEs need to be reformed without delay.
I join as a cosponsor of the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, S. 190, to underscore my support for quick passage of GSE regulatory reform legislation. If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole.
I urge my colleagues to support swift action on this GSE reform legislation.
In January 26, 2005, Senator McCain cosponsored legislation that had it been passed might have averted the current debacle of mortgage loans. It might have saved the taxpayer billions and the fall of venerable financial institutions would not have happened.

Obama and Marx: A crash course

“A spectre is haunting Europe — the spectre of Communism.”
With those words, Karl Marx launched a revolution with “The Communist Manifesto.” Interestingly, the opening of his essay, cowritten with Friedrich Engels, begins with the assertion that the European powers are using the “branding reproach of Communism” to label their opponents. Marx then says, “It is high time the communists should openly, in the face of the whole world, publish their views, their aims, their tendencies, and meet this nursery tale of the spectre of Communism with a Manifesto of the party itself.”
If Marx were alive today and living in San Francisco, perhaps he would have instead written this: “A spectre is haunting Democratic politics — the spectre of socialism.” Certainly, the “branding reproach of socialism” is now publicly acknowledged to have been used against the Democratic Party, and against its standard bearer, Barack Obama. It is high time for Obama and his allies to publicly assert their political and economic philosophy. If it is socialism, say so. If it is not, please explain why.
This, of course, is made immediately relevant by Obama’s famous comment to Joe the Plumber that, “I think when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody.” In particular he was talking about his tax plan, which is a plan for redistribution of wealth from top to bottom.
This is a matter of fact. When Obama tells you that his tax plan will benefit 95 percent of taxpayers, he is misstating the truth. The fact is that 30 to 40 percent of Americans, the poorest among us, already don’t pay any taxes. But what Obama’s plan will do is allow them to sign up for a variety of tax credits, so the government will send them a check for a couple thousand dollars or more every year. Where does the money come from to make those payments? From Americans who do pay taxes. It literally is redistribution of wealth. Instead of using taxes to pay for the necessities of infrastructure and defense that they were intended for, the government as envisioned by Obama will be “spreading the wealth around.”
The question is whether Americans care. And if they don’t, why not?
Ask yourself, why did we spend 50 years after World War II fighting a Cold War to eliminate communism if we actually believe in it? Is this nation actually prepared to admit we were wrong, and Karl Marx was right? Marx’s credo, “From each according to his ability; to each according to his need,” has a nice ring. It can easily be seen as an institutionalized form of Christian charity — providing for the less able, or the less advantaged. But look at the results of communism and socialism in Europe, and you will quickly conclude that any philosophical niceties are vastly outweighed by the political realities.
When you look at Marx’s list of goals for communism in chapter two of “The Communist Manifesto” (www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1848/communist-manifesto/ch02.htm), you can see that socialism has already made great advances in the United States. But in particular pay attention to No. 2 — “A heavy progressive or graduated income tax.”
In this regard, Obama has outdone Marx himself. A progressive tax just puts a greater share of the burden on the rich. We already have long since had such a tax. But now Obama wants to find a way to hand out money to the poor. Is it any wonder that he is ahead in the polls?
As Ben Franklin reputedly said, “When the people find they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.”

Jim McDermott, D-Washington, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee’s Subcommittee on Income Security and Family Support, are looking at redirecting those tax breaks to a new system of guaranteed retirement accounts to which all workers would be obliged to contribute.

That means your employer can no longer write off their contributions to your 401(k), and your capital gains would be TAXABLE year-on-year. In other words, it becomes just another investment or savings account, with no tax benefit at all, and no employer contribution. Instead, Uncle Sam would give you your “matching” funds — up to a whopping $600 per year! Whoopee!
Maybe you’ll be lucky, and they’ll have Franklin Raines running the agency issuing those bonds.
The Democrats want to end the private retirement system that has allowed Americans to become a vast investor class and put them back in thrall of the federal government. This is nothing more than a second welfare system that would sit on top of the crumbling Social Security entitlement. It would leave the American working and middle classes with no retirement option other than a government handout.

Also, he put the McCain Bill into place, which ensured that POW files could not be declassified. This was very painful for the families of POWs who wished to learn the details of their loved ones’ confinements and ascertain that they were, in fact, dead. Many speculate he did this in order to preserve his political career.
