Oh, That Joe! (No. 36 in a Series) — Muzzled Joe Biden Jokes About Getting Off-Message
Obama campaign officials may publicly herald the candor of Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., they may say he’s a net positive, but clearly, the aspiring VP has either been told to zip it or he’s self-zipped.
Perhaps Sen. Barack Obama’s disdainful reference to his running mate’s "rhetorical flourishes" conveyed the message.
Biden has avoided talking to his traveling press corps for a long time, and he has been giving the same short 15-minute stump speech every day for the last week.
Today’s, in Missouri, was his longest, clocking in at 28 minutes and including some new parts on news of the day, as Sen. Obama regularly does. (More on the "ripped-from-the-headlines" schtick of both Obama and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., on "World News" this evening.)
Ever since the Ohio arrest remarks and Seattle fundraiser comments that the world would soon test a young President Obama and his reaction wouldn’t obviously be the correct one (in some way responsible, perhaps, for Obama’s loss in the polls in who Americans trust to handle an unexpected crisis), Biden seems much more toned down, much more under wraps.
He stares straight at the teleprompter, rarely if ever deviating from script.
Just yesterday, Republicans and reporters alike noted that Biden seems to have been “muzzled” by Obama chieftains due to fears the verbose senator might drift off-message, as he has done a number of times — say, HERE and HERE in recent weeks.
Today in Arnold, Mo., speaking at the Fox High School gym before a crowd of more than 1,000 Show-Me State supporters, Biden swayed off-script once again.
“Now look, folks…,” began Biden, about to tie McCain to President Bush.
But then, looking to his right, Biden suddenly spotted the Warriors’ band standing toward the side of the stage.
“Hey, I didn’t even see the band up there,” said the distracted Delaware lawmaker. “Hey, folks, how you guys doing? Thanks for being here. That’s really nice of you. Thank you.”
Then Biden paused, perhaps reining himself in before drifting too far off-script.
“Um, that’s what you call getting off-message,” quipped the loquacious Blue Hen. “But I tell ya, you guys look good.”
Then he went back to what was in the script.

I wonder why they would muzzle Biden? I mean, it’s not like any reporter has made a cottage industry out of implying that Biden is a loose cannon, you know? And to be fair, compare Palin to Biden the the magnitude of Palin’s gaffes and spotlight-grabbing makes Biden pale in comparison. Honestly, it’s not like any reporter has simply decided that Biden’s off-the-cuff remarks deserve more notice, than, say, anything else.

There will be a few bright spots if Obama wins.
We can count on Biden to entertain us and be a constant embarrassment to the administration.
And it will be fun to watch Obama’s approval ratings sink to the level of Pelosi, Reid, Dodd, and Barney.

Finally, the Chicago tribune today picked up the Obama birth certificate story. This paragraph is most striking:
“Contacted Wednesday, Health Department spokeswoman Janice Okubo cited Hawaii state privacy laws and guidance from the state attorney general in saying she was not permitted to confirm the authenticity of the certificate released by the Obama campaign.”
So, no one has really confirmed the authenticity of the document. The Factcheck. org did not have the capacity and credentials for this job either. FEC recently said in their court filing that FEC does not have the judicial authority to check for Obama’s citizenship.
So, what is going on here? who is responsible to enforce Constitution. Why Obama refused to release anything that is “original” — a computer generated record, whose authenticity is still not proven, should not count.
Will the MSM do their job?

The lesson as always? Right wingers lie.

Title of the article
“Obama birth certificate rumor debunked”
First paragraph
“A persistent rumor circulated by opponents of Barack Obama in recent weeks questions the authenticity of his birth certificate from Hawaii, despite the fact that the Obama campaign debunked the rumor in June.
In the Tribune’s political blog “The Swamp” last week, reporter Mark Silva produced a copy of Obama’s birth certificate and addressed the birthplaces of both presidential candidates.”

Debunking something requires hard, solid “evidence”, not only simple claims such as “this is a rumor”.
Chicago tribune’s article provides no evidence to discredit the “rumor”. Rather, some of the writings in fact buttresses the foundation on which this “rumor” was grounded. It is a fact that no one with authority and credentials has even confirmed the authenticity of the document.
This so-called rumor will not go away.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
McCain spoke of his plans for education, at one of the debates. Obama favors Teachers unions, which basically means, no matter how bad a teacher is, his/her job is secure, so long as they are in the union.
McCain discussed this with Obama, saying Obama knew competition was important, because Obama’s daughters go to private schools. McCain supports charter schools, which would create a competition. When people would have to compete for students, and federal tax dollars…the peformance goes up.
Securing ones job thru a union, leaves no incentives for some teachers to excell and do better. I believe there are a lot of outstanding teachers out there, but like any business, there are those complacent people. Just there to get a paycheck.
It is a lie and you know it. By McCains definition, Clinton, Roosevelt, Reagan, and Palin are all socialist. Remember Palin taxed the oil companies earnings and gave to Alaskans. Taking their hard earnings and spreading the wealth to Alaskans.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Because neither McCain, nor Palin plan to nationalize everything from 401k’s to health care, to oil companies. All espoused, or planned by Democrats.
Obama wants to plan a civilian national security force, equal to our military? Why?
As for how will we all be rich? We shouldn’t think that way. This is the United States of America…and no country in the world has made all their citizens rich. Socialism, if you did a research on it, only leads to dependence, unemployment, and higher taxes…and that is what’s going to happen.
Just last week, in the UK, it was discovered that Englands national health care, was paying doctors to NOT send people to the hospital, because the system is going broke. If you’re old…forget health care. You’re old, and don’t need it. If your an infant, no worries. Obama votes against protecting those born alive from botched abortions.
If you want to be rich…go be rich…but I guarantee you…under Obama’s plans, of taxing wealth at a certain limit, no one will want to be rich, and those that are, will take measures to lower their income, even if that means laying off their workers.
But under Obama’, any shot, at achieving, and trying to make life better for yourself, and your family, will only be deterred because of those tax hikes.

Ryan C – actually case was kicked b/c the court said Berg didnt have standing to raise a challenge … they could have dismissed on the merits, they could have said we did our own factfinding and are satisfied … instead they said the rules regarding standing have to present an actual/concrete harm and Obama’s ineligibility to be President doesnt present such a harm since plaintiff can vote for someone else, and since the court cannot ascribe the harm to all registered voters.
Interesting take. Still the SupCt — who knows. Maybe this will be another year where the Court decides who’s president.
Does make you wonder why Obama et al didnt put an end to everything by simply presenting to the court the proof, instead of relying on legal arguments that the court didn’t have subject matter jurisdiction to hear the case.

That is why you are not a lawyer.
From the judge:
“Various accounts, details and ambiguities from Obama’s childhood form the basis of Plaintiff’s allegation that Obama is not a natural born citizen of the United States. To support his contention, Plaintiff cites sources as varied as the Rainbow Edition News Letter … and the television news tabloid Inside Edition. These sources and others lead Plaintiff to conclude that Obama is either a citizen of his father’s native Kenya, by birth there or through operation of U.S. law; or that Obama became a citizen of Indonesia by relinquishing his prior citizenship (American or Kenyan) when he moved there with his mother in 1967. Either way, in Plaintiff’s opinion, Obama does not have the requisite qualifications for the Presidency that the Natural Born Citizen Clause mandates. The Amended Complaint alleges that Obama has actively covered up this information and that the other named Defendants are complicit in Obama’s cover-up.”
From a law blog
“A judge’s attitude toward the factual foundation of a plaintiff’s claims is an essential factor in understanding just who indeed has standing to sue.”

“This is why the republicans are losing.”
Republicans are losing (I know – I used to be one) because they abandoned conservative principles, joined with Democrats in embracing pork and corruption, and just generally lost sight of who they were representing.
So yeah, I’m in favor of a good house cleaning in Washington however Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid are not the answer, just more of the same.
We need smaller government, a strong national defense, private-sector incentives and lower taxes on individuals to stimulate economic growth, secure borders, and a government that promotes the general welfare of its citizens by encouraging non-profits to continue and expand their good works.

“Cliff ,good luck. make any plans you like ,we liberals will soon be making new liberal tax laws and regulations that will make you sorry you were born if we catch you breaking them…”
No broken laws – just massive job losses, double-digit inflation and an outflow of investment capital into less confiscatory places.
If libs do take charge, it’ll be Jimmy Carter Part Deux all over again. Anyone old enough to remember those days? Ahh, good times…

I am reminded of the story of the Pied Piper. Obama is todays pied piper. Your eyes glaze over, you forget logic and reality, you fail to look at character and judgement.
All past associates and friends, Garrakhan, Wright, Ayers etc. have been denied and thrust aside because some said they were bad people. A person with character stands up and is counted about his friends. If he fails that and is truly against them, where is his judgement for having associated with them at all. When asked early on he was against off shore drilling. A poll shows 57% of Americans for it and two days later is for off shore drilling. He backs a bill which gives money to Big Oil because it has incentives for them to explore alternative energy. I don’t know about you but oil companies are the last people I want doing alternative energy. Unfortunately when the pied piper plays his flute you forget about doing some real looking at the man behind it. The media as a whole haven’t done their job to bring issues before you to think about. The sad part is once the flute stops playing and he is in control he will break your heart. Doubling capital gains tax will be crushing to the economy. If elected in November, Obama along with you can watch the stock market go down as investors cash out to preserve their money from tax increases. The economy will tank. Jobs will be lost, prices will soar. Play that “spread the wealth” tune pied piper, but don’t say you weren’t warned.

But to put that much inexperience in charge of bringing that about, somone who really doesn’t understand foreign issues, somone who doesn’t really understand economic principles, will can only fail in the expectations you hold in him. Play on Pied Piper.

These statements the RNC and conservative faithful are making are not true. They keep saying these false things about Obama because they feel if they keep saying them, people will believe them and not feel the need to research the issues. I beg of Virginians to please look at the issues.
First, what is really bothering me is this notion that being a muslim automatically qualifies you as a terrorist. Obama is not a muslim and proclaimed his christianity faith and there are folks who try to say he’s a muslim. I know, as much christians should, that simply a name can’t reveal the faith you have inside your heart. Obama says he is christian and I believe him because I know that God knows his heart and will know if he is lying. Even if he was Muslim, that does not disqualify him from holding public office in America. We are supposed to be the land of the FREE home of the BRAVE, not discriminating because of the religion they choose to support. As Collin Powell stated, it shouldn’t matter if he is muslim.
Secondly, to the notion that he will ‘raise taxes’. Most people around this area do not make more than $250,000/ year so your taxes will not be raised. Also, we have seen what the current Bush tax code has done for America~ nothing but increase debt and decrease job opportunity. John McCain has said nothing about the types of jobs be plans to create because of course he doesn’t has a plan. His plan is to keep up in this economic crisis as long as he can by not changing the tax code and the regulations.
The Iraq war has also shown the ability of a nation to cause an even bigger problem and the stubbornness not to fix the issue. Why are we still spending 10 billion dollars a month in Iraq while they enjoy a surplus?? Where is Osama Bin Laden? It doesn’t matter if the surge worked if we went into the wrong country for the wrong reasons.
John McCain also plans to tax health care benefits for the first time EVER! Why would America allow him to do this when experts say 20 million Americans can lose their employee provided health care benefits w/ John McCains new plan? Why would we let this happen if we know that health care is already a commodity in this nation and more people need it. 882 million dollars from Medicare will be cut if John McCain takes office which means worse health care for Americans.
John McCain hasn’t also talked about making college affordable for American youth. The latest study said that tuition rates rose 6.4% in the past year! Obama has offered a tax credit to those who want a higher education to better themselves as Americans (opportunity). John McCain has no plan to help the American youth and the majority who can’t afford to pay tuition to colleges. How can we grow as a nation when we aren’t properly educated?
Obama has also talked about leading the world in the innovation and creation of green jobs to help clean up the environment. Everyone understands you can’t fix the energy problem with drilling alone. Also, we’ve forgotten about the pollution in the air that is clogging up our lungs and harming the future Earth. Why as Americans would we stand by and watch the Earth be destroyed as we steal more resources from the Earth instead of leading the march towards renewable energy? Then we could also outsource the technology to other nations to make even more profit. Obama has it is his plans but McCain is still stuck with the same policies!
John McCain has said he’s different than President Bush but he hasn’t put forth any policies that would rid us of the past 8 years.
People who will vote for Obama know the value of the American values that the Republicans left behind. It’s time to recover the glory of being American and return this nation to its greatest days. We need to move forward, not look behind. John McCain and his party are stuck in the past; Real Americans and Virginians are looking toward the future!

“A poll shows 57% of Americans for it and two days later is for off shore drilling.”
That would be John mcCain who after being against Offshore Drilling for much of his Senate career changed positions this June.
“He backs a bill which gives money to Big Oil because it has incentives for them to explore alternative energy. I don’t know about you but oil companies are the last people I want doing alternative energy.”
Is it ignorance or dishonesty?
The incentives for alternative energy were not for the oil companies but companies that do alternative energy.

Obama says he wants to lower taxes and that’s great. Bush did it during his first term and it helped pull us out of recession rather quickly. However the Bush tax cuts were more broadbased than the plan Obama is touting. Bush chose to lift all boats. Obama is choosing to take more from one group of people, in order to give to another.
Obama then compounds the problem by introducing a laundry list of spending priorities that leaves people who do the math scratching their heads as to how he’ll pay for it all w/o ballooning our national debt even further.
Obama even admits the federal deficit will take a back seat to implementing some of his programs. That’s not the change we need. It’s an economic poison pill for our economy.
John McCain says he’ll aggressively cut wasteful government spending. And if you look back at his overall voting record throughout his years in the Senate, I think you’ll see a consistent position that’s fiscally conservative.

Senator Obama voted four billions in corporate giveaways to the oil companies,” said McCain in an apparent reference to a 2005 energy bill that Bush pushed through Congress.
“I voted against it,” the Arizona Republican said.
The legislation included nearly $3 billion in tax breaks for the oil and natural gas industry including some — but not all — that would benefit the largest oil producers such as Exxon Mobil Corp. It also had $11.4 billion in tax incentives for alternative energy and efficiency programs, cited by Obama as his reason for supporting the legislation

Is there a rule on the site that every comment needs to have some gratuitous poke/swing at the other person? [You don't know me, know whether I was a lawyer and am not now, have studied law and will be taking the bar, have studied law and gave it up for something else, or whether I'm just really well read... or none of the above.... So really, my interpretation is why I'm not a lawyer?]
And, I’m sorry – did I miss the part where the court talked about how silly the case was and why it felt it could dismiss as frivolous, or where they brought into evidence any proof that plaintiff’s claims were unbased?
All I’m saying is I find it amazing that there is no resolution other than to say “we cant hear your case”. That’s a classic judicial cop-out. So much for judicial activism.

VA, blue v red …
” Most people around this area do not make more than $250,000/ year so your taxes will not be raised. ”
- except in Northern VA, where a double-earner professional family could be earning that much
- and in retiree neighborhoods, where elderly are using stocks/dividends as part of retirement financing, and have to consider changes to capital gains
- and if Dem plan to tax 401(k) contributions goes in to play
- of and lets not forget, as corp contributions keep drying up, where’s the $ coming from for all these programs Obama’s proposed? There’s a sliding scale on tax/income — if they feel fine taxing anyone over $250, why not $200? why not $150?
“John McCain also plans to tax health care benefits for the first time EVER! ”
1) and provide a tax credit — so he simultaneously tries to break this awful system where work gives you insurance, and insurance prices are geared around selling comprehensive packages to employers. Great – unless you lose your job or retire.
2) Obama and Dems are suggesting taxing 401(k) contributions for the first time EVER. So instead of getting a tax break and saving for retirement, now you’ll pay more on income tax and have less for retirement?
“John McCain has no plan to help the American youth and the majority who can’t afford to pay tuition to colleges.”
- Check out his programs on student loans, his thinking re: tuition/service, and his plans on K-12.
“Obama has also talked about leading the world in the innovation and creation of green jobs to help clean up the environment. ”
Great ideas, with many similarities w/McCain discussions — in the end, where’s the money come from? How do you make sure businesses that form the mainstay of American industrial portfolio survive/shift to new technologies or business lines? And, what do you do about China/India which are growing, polluting, and creating new technologies — Obama acts like because he said it will be so, that’s all that needs to be said.
“John McCain has said he’s different than President Bush but he hasn’t put forth any policies that would rid us of the past 8 years.” …
You haven’t listened.
“People who will vote for Obama know the value of the American values …
Really, do you think you/Dems own values? Like taxing the successful so that 40-50% of overall income goes back to the government in taxes and fees? That an enlarged social welfare system is better for everyone? That a culture of life is a bad thing? That doing nothing and being charming is more important than actually putting yourself on the line?

“Anything but their failed cowboy diplomacy that has produced no results is called appeasement,” Obama countered. “Here’s the truth: the Soviet Union had thousands of nuclear weapons and Iran doesn’t have a single one. But when the world was on the brink of nuclear Holocaust, Kennedy talked to Khrushchev and he got those missiles out of Cuba. Why shouldn’t we have the same courage and confidence to talk to our enemies? That’s what strong countries do. That’s what strong presidents do.”
“The Soviet Union had the ability to destroy the world several times over, had satellites spanning the globe, had huge masses of conventional military power, all directed at destroying us,” he said. “So, I’ve made it clear for years that the threat from Iran is grave. But what I’ve said is that we should not just talk to our friends. We should be willing to engage our enemies as well. That’s what diplomacy is all about.”
Obama repeatedly stressed the risk posed by Iran, as he suggested that danger has grown because of policies supported by McCain.
“Iran is a grave threat. It has an illicit nuclear program. It supports terrorism across the region and militias in Iraq. It threatens Israel’s existence. It denies the Holocaust,” he said. “The reason Iran is so much more powerful than it was a few years ago is because of the Bush-McCain policy of fighting in Iraq and refusing to pursue direct diplomacy with Iran. They’re the ones who have not dealt with Iran wisely.”
Obama also called Iran the “single biggest beneficiary” of Iraq war and pledged to secure all lose nuclear materials during first term, if he is elected president.

The REALLY strange part is that the vast majority of Republicans will also get a tax cut. Most are not that wealthy. That’s the point!
They have been duped into believing the GOP is looking out for them. The new GOP is not the same party it was 25 year ago.
But to keep up with the new GOP ideology, Pub supporters will complain because they are not getting to send their money to the wealthiest Americans. But I bet, when they get a tax cut, not a one will send the extra money back to the government.
Apparently all these self proclaimed blue collar Americans talking about having to work 60 hours/wk all think they will someday be mega-rich and get to enjoy the tax benefits provided by the new Republican party.
What they fail to acknowledge, is it’s easier to save if you have more money to put in the bank.

“Cliff – Cuts weren’t necessary after a recession. Especially for the rich.”
Look at the timeline. The tax cuts brought us out of the recession and, again, everybody got their taxes cut, not just rich folks.
We need to continue to keep taxes low across the board, and it’s past time to enact cutbacks and limits on government spending. Those two things will help pull us out of this mess.

“What they fail to acknowledge, is it’s easier to save if you have more money to put in the bank.”
Yes, because I can get far richer by saving my pennies and earning 4% or 5% in a CD.
But you’re right, it sure is easier than working for a living and aspiring to succeed so perhaps we should all just give up and give in to our new governement overlords. They’ll take care of us!

your children are your bills, which i as a single person have to subsidize with my higher single status tax bracket (which i might add i find singularly unfair.)
that digression aside , this country has many many people who have children who,i would wager are far less fortunate than yours , so please take that into account when you pat yourself on the back for your magnanimous highly ethical and morally aloof voting decision(s).
i am glad you voted for the best candidate ,but rather disappointed that your vote was ,as you admitted yourself, powered by ulterior personal motives that are, to me anyway, less than patriotic/sterling and more typically republican-ish/egocentric in nature.

The point is that the vast majority of Americans do not make $250,000/yr and never will. That’s just a fact.
The “Joe the Plumber” dreams being crushed because of a tax policy is complete ********. There were more start up businesses in the 90′s than in the last 8 years, and the tax rates were higher. Tax rates went up in WA state and they saw growth in small business, not a decline.
Even in Northern VA, a $250k/yr income is a lot. It’s not mega rich for that area, but certainly it is WAY above the average. (Even for a two income family this is true)
The problem is that Pub supporters have bought into the spin McCain and company are selling them. They are just parroting what they are being told.
Obama simply suggests the tax structure should return to where it eas 8 years ago. That’s a 3% increase in income tax for those making over 250k/yr. This is LESS than what we had under Reagan and our country did not collapse back then either.
The rediculous oversimplifications are what the Pub spin masters thrive on. They put labels on things and make it easy to understand.
A 3% increase in taxes is now “socialism”. What a bunch of BS fed to easily manipulated lemmings.
McCain’s health care plan is a freakin joke. Ever try to get an independent policy for a family of four? You lose all collective bargaining power.
If you have pre-existing conditions, you just don’t get insurance. Not at any price in some cases.
And for those people 60-65 getting ready to retire. Good luck trying to to find a policy, more-less pay for it.
McCain’s plan is designed to benefit business and insurance companies. That does NOT help middle class Americans.
McCAIN ALSO FAILS TO TELL YOU HE IS A HUGE DEFICIT SPENDER!
His economic plan will cost Americans more than Obama’s. McCain will add $10.2 TRILLION to the national debt in 10 years, Obama $5.7 trillion according to the Tax Policy Center. McCain will have to raise taxes if he plans to pay for his policies.
SUPPLY SIDE ECOMONICS FAILED MISERABLY BY EVERY METRIC USED TO MEASURE AN ECONOMY. IT WAS A THEORY, AND IT WAS WRONG.
Example, ExxonMoble just made $14.8 BILLION in profits last quarter. How much of that mega-profit (more than some country’s GDP) will “trickle down” to the middle class?
The answer is the major stock holders will increase their wealth. That’s it. The rest of us do not get the benefits. In the past 8 years the wealthy have DOUBLED their holdings. The middle class wages and savings both have GONE DOWN.
We need a new direction. Obama’s plan is certainly not perfect, but it is far superior to McCain’s non-plan.
Both will have to face reality about their spending. We still have a Congress as well. The President does not create the laws. (Except Bush and Cheney)He just ratifies them.

Obama isn’t even throwing the entire Republican party under the bus. Watch him on Rachel Maddow tonight.
I voted for Obama because of the damage that has been done to our Nation’s standing globally, the damage done to our constitution, unjustified war, and our growing National Debt.

paige….why should i care about other peoples kids? that IS socialism. your kids = your bills
thats one thing many republicans dont understand ,there is personal responsibility eg; fixing your roof ,buying your kids a bmw etc, and then there is national responsibility that each and every american SHOULD be happy and more than willing to do ,eg; paying their fair share of taxes.
my roof leaks ,will you pay for it to be repaired? of course not , its my house and not yours. thats personal in nature ,like your kids .
bridges ,roads ,health care ,wars etc etc, are all NOT personal agendas but are things/issues ALL americans must share the burden of.
now if you want to have kids ,spend a fortune on them ,ipods private college etc, thats fine but you need to pay your fair share of taxes first THEN worry how to support your children on your own with or without the taxpayer funded social programs that are already provided to ALL americans eg;public schools ,public health care etc…
do your children use public health service? do they attend public school?
ride the school bus or drive a bmw?
capitalism of any ilk that unfairly leeches off of the low/middle class taxpayer to provide for elitist personal wants or “need” is exactly what i am patently against .
you sound a bit like a republican paige, its ok. it appears you are seeing the light finally ,after helping to ruin the country by voting for the bushes…you did vote for both of them didnt you? and reagan too?

VA was red, Thanks for playing, but I’m afraid your anti-McCain rant was not persuasive to me. Surprised, aren’t you? *G*
Seriously– you begin with a rant about how Joe the Plumber should not care about Obama’s tax increase because he, poor deluded fool, will never make 250,000 a year. WEll, there’s a lot wrong with your assumptions here. First of all, it is entirely possible and even probable for Joe to make that much once he owns a plumbing business, if he works hard. I know, because my spouse and I are small business owners (yes, and in the interest of full disclosure, I am also a college professor– spouse does the heavy lifting part of the business, I just do the books and office work). We work extremely hard and as a result, with only one employee and three family members working for our company, we broke through that 250,000 level last year and will do the same this year. So, yes, it does make sense for him to aspire to that income.
However, more importantly, why should Joe only worry about his own economic self-interest? Doesn’t The Chosen One exhort us to be our brother’s keeper? Just because the tax increase will not directly affect Joe does not mean he is not allowed to think it unfair and economically foolish, does it? Past experience has shown how disastrous it can be to raise taxes on ANYONE during such troubling economic times. So Joe can be concerned about the economy in general and its impact on his present and future business, and I agree with him that the Obama tax plan is troubling in its potential impact on the American economy in its current iteration.
But additionally, we should not innocently believe that the details of this plan are set in stone. As someone on the internet says all the time (can’t remember who– probably someone on the National Review site), all Obama’s promises have an expiration date– all of them. He promised to take public financing– until he saw how much money he could raise if he didn’t. He promised to oppose the FISA legislation– until he voted for it. He promised a lot of stuff, so excuse me if I consider his 250,000 cut-off point just another promise he won’t keep. After all, this week he’s running an ad that promises not to raise taxes on those making less than 200,000– NOT 250,000. And Biden has said the cuts belong to folks making less than 150,000. WHo knows what figure Obama will use when the time comes? He has no track record of standing fast on a promise regardless of the consequences. (John McCain, on the other hand, does what he promises he will do. He’s careful about his promises– wisely so.)
You also trotted out the tired “evil Exxon” idea, writing: “Example, ExxonMoble just made $14.8 BILLION in profits last quarter. How much of that mega-profit (more than some country’s GDP) will “trickle down” to the middle class? The answer is the major stock holders will increase their wealth. That’s it. The rest of us do not get the benefits.” Where do I begin? For starters, Exxon Mobil not only had record profits, they also paid record taxes last quarter. When they make money, we make money. That “trickles down,” if you are foolish enough to think in those antiquated terms, to all of us, including the middle class.
Then you complain that Exxon stockholders will just get richer, and act as if these stockholders are some sort of distant fat cats who will apparently burn their illgotten gains to light their cigars rather than spend that money in ways that benefit the economy. Pish. Exxon stockholders will do nicely, getting solid dividends. Who are Exxon stockholders? They are those middle-class Americans you express so much concern for, people who hold Exxon stock or mutual funds that include Exxon in their portfolios. Estimates vary, but between 35 and 50 percent of ALL American families own stock. Lots of pension funds own Exxon Mobil as well, so that Exxon’s good fortune benefits the teachers, police officers, assembly line workers (to cite groups I know have pension funds with large stakes in Exxon Mobil) and others who won the stock. Given the recent overall stock market performance, don’t you hope your pension fund or mutual fund holds Exxon stock? If it does, the benefits of Exxon’s profits will indeed “trickle down” to you.
And finally, Exxon Mobil makes such huge profits because it is such a huge corporation. IT has the largest income of any American company. As a percentage of revenue, Exxon Mobil’s profits are not as large as those of many other businesses. It just that it makes a small percentage profit on a much much bigger total revenue because of its size. Because it is huge, Exxon Mobil employs a lot of American workers.
It employs over 30,000 people just in its corporate headquarters and over 82,000 people in all. That’s a lot of paychecks, most of them made out to middle-class workers. So they all benefit from Exxon’s success as well. An unprofitable company lays off workers; a profitable one can afford to expand and hire more.

bh – You miss the point:
Children are the future of America. Don’t care about kids? – fine. Then also don’t care about America’ future. You can’t save America from your grave.
“America’s stagnation in educational progress threatens the country’s long-term economic and sociological prospects [according to research] … If you look at Barack Obama’s education proposals—especially his emphasis on early childhood—you see that they flow naturally and persuasively from this research.” David Brooks – NYT

i can see why venezuela nationalized the oil industries there.
the oil companies have their foot on the economic gas pedal ,so to speak.
they can lower the price ,and the economy will take off .
the oil companies increase the price and the economy comes to a near halt.
that kind of totally inappropriate and possibly illegal and definitely unethical economic handcuffing and foot dragging could certainly be characterized as unhealthy to the overall national interest at least ,and at most it might be considered illegal by some ,ie;venezuela as pointed out previously
the oil companies and their greed to the point of national harm are making a good case for nationalization. if we can nationalize banks i see no logical reason why we cannot nationalize the oil companies as well ,in the interest of national security and prosperity.

however the price of oil can and does rule the economic landscape in the usa , and more and more ,worldwide.

Ryan C,
Responding to something I wrote of Joe the Plumber, you pointed out “Um the plumbing business Joe works for is said to profit $100K a year. Getting $250K profit from a small business means that small business is doing quite well.” Well, um, yeah, the current profit is as you report. Joe has plans to expand that business if he manages to buy it– add more trucks and plumbers. Take the risk and reap the rewards. As you say, 250,000 profit is a small business doing well, but that’s the point. If you do well, you should be rewarded for it. It is not at all impossible. I know. It took my spouse less than 2 years to reach that level in our business. Of course, he works 6 or 7 days a week and puts in long hours. But he also has unique job skills, does great work, and is compensated accordingly. I hope Joe the Plumber succeeds beyond his wildest dreams. I still don’t understand why people attach him and belittle his ambitions.
I am Joe Business Owner

Joe? The guy lied about when he was going to buy the biz and how much the biz made and that he was not even licensed? Its a two man operation, 1 older guy who’s run it for years and his apprentice, Joe.
Joe would be lucky if he could afford a undocumented worker if he bought the business.
Seriously do you really think a guy with a tax lien is going to get business loans sufficient to expand his business let alone purchase it?

“we’re set up, unlike other states in the union, where it’s collectively Alaskans own the resources. So we share in the wealth when the development of these resources occurs.” palin, 2008
“share in the wealth,” baby. no wonder she’s been popular – and there are no signs that sarah has any problem with this at all. and calls obama out for “spreading the wealth.” like bill maher says, she’s just missing that gene that tells her she should be embarassed.
