Palin Advisor: Tonight is an opportunity
ABC News’ Imtiyaz Delawala report: Palin advisor Tucker Eskew tells ABC News tonight’s debate is an "opportunity" for Palin to speak directly to the American people with no filter and show what she’s made of.
It’s also an opportunity to turn around days of bad press.
"Things are good," Eskew said of Palin’s level of preparation and readiness for tonight. "Get outside the media bubble and things are really good."
After two full days of debate prep at Sen. John McCain’s Sedona, Ariz., ranch, Eskew said Palin is relaxed and ready to go up against Biden, who he labeled "a lion of the Senate."
"He thinks it’s a lion’s den… She thinks it’s an opportunity," Eskew said of tonight’s ninety-minute debate.
A Palin aide said it was McCain’s idea to have Palin prepare at the ranch with her family in tow, to provide a more relaxed atmosphere.
Palin aides are fully aware that the Governor has taken a beating in the press and on the comedy circuit over the past few weeks. That Saturday Night Live sketch from last weekend has had more than four million hits online.
And beyond the comedy, there is serious trouble brewing for the McCain campaign.
The latest ABC News poll indicates Palin is now more of a drag than a boost to the GOP ticket. Sixty percent of those polled on September 29 did not think Palin has the experience it takes to serve effectively as president, up 15 points since early September. And just 46 percent think Palin "understands complex issues," while 49 percent think she does not.
But they remain confident that she can hold her own tonight.
"I’ve been hearing about his senate speeches since I was like in the second grade," Palin said of Biden in a recent interview with CBS’ Katie Couric. "I’m the new energy, the new face, the new ideas."
Palin’s debate preparations have been a mix of reading, listening to oral presentations and engaging in mock debates. A foreign policy advisor, Randy Scheunemann, played the role of Joe Biden. Aides say Palin has not been asked to memorize anything.
Still, her sister told Glamour magazine it is "absolutely phenomenal what my sister can learn in a short amount of time." She also said, "What’s happening to Sarah Palin right now is like the worst college exam cram period ever."
One memory expert says– despite what you might think– cramming can work just fine.
"It’s better to overstudy than to understudy," says Mark McDaniel, Professor of Psychology at Washington University in St. Louis where tonight’s debate will be held.
"Cramming is a useful technique if one is only worried about bringing that information to mind immediately in the next day or so. If one wants to bring the information to mind over the long term, it’s not the best technique. If one wants to be able to be facile with bringing that information to mind under stress, such as in a debate, under a nationally televised audience, cramming may not necessarily be the best technique," McDaniel says.

I think there are 2 points that I have been stressing that will become abundantly clear tonight:
1) Not only is Sarah Palin unqualified to be our next VP, I argue that she is unqualified to be the governer of Alaska.
2) John McCain has the most mismanaged campaigns in modern history. His whole team is not ready for primetime.

This should be an interesting debate. I would like to see if Palin can have coherent answers to questions. So far, her answers have been very poor.
I’d also like to see if Biden can debate without gaffes.
I still don’t think she’s qualified at all, but I’m willing to have an open mind about her general intelligence. I know Biden is smart, but he does tend to say stupid things. Let’s see if either one can overcome these flaws and present themselves in a positive light.

A writer from The Nation is live-blogging the debate tonight.
I’m trying to pass this around because, if action meets the talk, it looks like a number of conservatives are descending on his blog tonight.
If it helps, he’s going to award Powell’s gift cards for good comments.

Biden is a notorious plagiarizer. I wonder who’s words he’s going to steal for tonight’s debate? At least Palin is sincere and speaks from the heart; unlike the overly scripted Obama bin Biden team, with their 500 advisors pulling their puppet’s strings.

All Biden needs to do is give clear, short answers and a few jabs at McCain. Palin should sink herself with answers that go in circles and off point.

she better recite the entire history of the American Federal government and foreign policy at this point

Biden’s gaffes don’t cause such a stir because he has 26 years of Street Cred and action on the National Stage. Had McCain picked a better known VP candidate his/her gaffes would also be less relevant to their experience. We wouldn’t be worried about gaffes from Majorie Snowe or Kay Baily Hutchinson. Tonight would be a much different story. Instead of wondering if McCain’s VP can complete a sentence, we would be looking forward to a substantive debate from highly intelligent all the way around.

Sarah Palin needs to “speak directly to the American people with no filter” ? I thought that’s what we’ve been hearing and seeing ! She has no filter. No filter, no substance, no business being on the ticket. Sarah being Sarah is just what we’ve been getting. And we’ve all heard enough.

All Republicans should hold an emergency convention or some sort of an on-line voting to draft another better candidate and force her/him on the ticket instead of Palin.

I think she does have a very general understanding of issues, but that’s as far as it goes. It seems that she’s unable to vocalize what she does understand and doesn’t know how to dance around tough questions without looking like you have no idea about what the iterviewer is talking about. If she can’t speak intelligently with American journalists, I dont think she’ll be able to handle Biden.

I think Biden’s biggest challenge will be to keep from laughing! I just about died when she was talking when she listed geographical location gave her foreign policy experience, and then again when she couldn’t name a court case besides Roe V Wade or when she said we had the right to privacy (thus confirming the legitimacy of Roe V Wade), and also when she couldn’t name one media source she read but kept saying I read all of them – this woman is hilarious. Case in point, SNL took most of her quotes verbatim and the nation’s been cracking up ever since. Poor Biden -

Obama at least is intelligent and aware. Palin is thoughtless, ill-exposed, and violent – something she clearly expressed when she said she would attack Russia. One would hope that most people in this country want a vp and president much smarter then the rest of us to make decisions. Also, all women should be insulted that McCain would pick a women just because she is a woman. Ridiculous! It is 2008 people! women can hold there own. Tonight Biden should bring it on just as he would with anyone. Lastly, i am so sick of the republican party trying to spin everything just so they can win a campagne. Dustin Rabe, what is more important, a candidate’s economic policy or their military policy? Really, how many people have died as a result of the economic policies of a democrat president? Not many. But do you realise how many lives will be extinguished dramatically in the event of a trigger-happy US president ready to declare war on Russia? Palin’s religious fanaticism, her apocalyptic views means she ‘would not blink’ when thinking of attacking Russia, or even North Korea.
To her, it’s ‘bound to happen’ in fulfillment of bible prophecy. She does not mind instigating the hostilities just to bring it about and presumably get a pack on the back from Jesus. She is a tool of the Neo Cons who want this explosion of global violence. Read Project For the New American Century. It’s all there in black and white. If she ascends to power she will be a tool in the hands of neo-con war-mongers. It could all go horribly wrong and where will that leave you and your family?
I urge you to think Safety First. This means NO ‘pre-emptive’ wars. No nuclear strikes on Iran. Palin stands for nuclear war without end, and you best believe that. Rememebr other nations have nuclear weapons too, and are ready to respond to US aggression big time.
A word is enough for the wise!

Wanda, have you read Project For the New American Century? Have you even heard about it? It’s a blueprint for US global domination drawn up by neo-cons like Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz in 2000. In it, they wrote that the US would need to engage in multiple wars to conquer global resources. They also stated that for this to happen, they would need a ‘pearl harbor type occurrence’, which would facilitate public backing for war. 9/11 occurred 9 mths afterwards.. WE’VE HAD TWO WARS in consequence with more to follow, and Sarah Palin in power is all they need to bring about the rest of the plan to fruition. The countries mentioned for conquest in that book include Iraq, Iran,
North Korea, and China and Russia.
You can find the book in any good bookstore. You’d do well to read it.
Posted by: Ross | October 2, 2008, 4:36 pm 4:36 pm
Oh, and McCain also is a neo-con, so he would just as eagerly execute their designs for global war.

Sarah Palin has the opportunity to explain why she believes her resume shows her actual experience in and knowledge of national affairs. Clearly she cannot do this — her resume clearly demonstrates this. A VP’s most important quality is readiness to step into the presidency at a moment’s notice, not to be home-spun, folky or “Main Street,” which are merely political attributes. Sarah Palin is unqualified to be vice president and she can do nothing about that before this election.
Posted by: Jim Brown | October 2, 2008, 4:41 pm 4:41 pm
Tonight is a contest between two brands of politics.
On one hand, you have ignorance, and on the other you have intelligence.
For 8 years, the Republican base has been playing up this terrifying and senseless aversion to intellectuals. They’d rather have religious fanatics or people who “they think they could have a beer with” instead of somebody who actually understands complex issues. It’s ridiculous.
The founding fathers were the most well educated, wealthiest, most elite, most cosmopolitan, and most secular people of their era. These are the people who crafted the constitution you conservatives idolize so much.
Sarah Palin is a joke. She is a gimmick. The notion of her in the White House is horrifying and McCain has lost all respect and credibility with such a ludicrous selection for his Vice Presidential candidate. How low American politics have sunk to put such a moron within reach of the Presidency. This time will be the laughing stock of future generations if the Republicans win.

Why can’t we use our God Given Brains and look at this thing tonight and THEN analyze it and make an INFORMED decision. Because most people can no longer look at different sides of issues and USE THEIR BRAINS to think. We just let Fox and Limbaugh and CNN feed us what the corporate media want us to think. What we teach in schools, thanks alot to No Test Maker Left Behind policies of Bush, is how to fill in a multiple choice bubble, NOT how to read, analyze, and THINK for ourselves.

Ross, recently McCain refused to answer a reporters question about whether he would invite the president of Spain to a WH visit. The reason is that McCain has a grudge against Zapatero so would not. He has a history of snubbing reporters, politicians and world leaders whom he believes have treated him unfairly or even not supported his agendas. This may be acceptable behavior for a maverick senator, but would be disastrous behavior for the leader of the free world.
Ms Palin did say that our invasion of Iraq was part of God’s plan, which is a scary comment coming from one who could conceivably become president.
I don’t think anyone can save the economy, but it seems cleat that the McCain/Palin ticket stands a much greater chance of developing more wars.

Why are Democrats worried over Palin. We Republicans have ABSOLUTE confidence in the ability of “HER EXCELLENCY” witch hunting pastor to turn things around her for good. The matter is settled, Biden is going to remain dumb all through the debate.

Mc Cain should be ashamed of himself for his pick of Sarah Palin she is absolutely one of the worst picks for VP ever. This might turn women voters against him. People are talking about her experience in governing people but her whole state has a lower population than one of the cities (Chicago) in the state in which Obama is an senator of. None of the canidates have experience in te job their trying to get.

Worried about gaffes with Biden? Are you kidding me? This woman thinks foreign policy is in regard to geography, and that Russian migs have been in Alaska? Gaffes, I’d be happy if she could tell me anything that has to do with improving the quality of American’s lives. Such as the Economy, Energy, real Foreign policy, and inflation. I need specifics, not round about answers that are the same and cutsey comments about being a soccer mom, and young woman. Gaffes-give me a break!

I don’t think it can be argued that she brings a lot of experience and trying to defend against that ends up looking a bit obsurd…… but most of us would be hard pressed to clear that hurdle and yet I’m not so sure that most of us could not do a better job in using sound judgement to better serve the American people than those already there with ‘experience’. Burglars have a lot of experience with alarm systems, but I wouldn’t want one installing mine.
IF I were to vote for that ticket it would be on the strength of the overall ticket vs the other. The question in my mind is which ticket will do a ‘better’ job of fending off the nutty notions of the extreme rights and lefts, have the conviction to put the average joe ahead of special interests, and work toward making governement smaller….. Sarah could do fine. She can learn the specific turds as they float to the top of the punch bowl.
There is a lot to be said for experience, but it and of itself does not define qualified or potential for success.

Since our founding fathers were:
“the most well educated, wealthiest, most elite, most cosmopolitan, and most secular people of their era. These are the people who crafted the constitution you conservatives idolize so much.”
and you prefer to have SOCIALIST MORON to be in the SAME league.
I don’t believe our founding fathers wanted this Nation to become a SOCIALIST/MARXIST nation.
Are you prepare to hand over your wealth that you have worked so hard to earn/build to Obama for his “wealth/income re-distribution” approach?

McCain and Couric Spar on Gotcha Journalism
COURIC: Over the weekend, Gov. Palin, you said the U.S. should absolutely launch cross-border attacks from Afghanistan into Pakistan to, quote, “stop the terrorists from coming any further in.” Now, that’s almost the exact position that Barack Obama has taken and that you, Sen. McCain, have criticized as something you do not say out loud. So, Gov. Palin, are you two on the same page on this?
MCCAIN: Now, just a minute, Katie. I have to step in here. That’s another example of the media’s “gotcha journalism”…
COURIC: But, it was a question from a citizen. How is a citizen asking a candidate a question an example of what you call “gotcha journalism?”
MCCAIN: Because it was hard, Katie.
We don’t want Gov. Palin to be asked questions, unless she is prepared for them. When she is prepared, as she will be before the debate, she sounds intelligent, knowledgeable and feisty. But when she has not been prepared, she sounds lost and incoherent.
We can’t have people asking her questions before she has had time to be prepared with an answer.
COURIC: But, Sen. McCain, I have to say, you are 72-years old. Actuarial preditions show that if you were to be elected, Gov. Palin would have a 1 in 5 chance of actually becoming President. These are perilous times–unprecedented crises in financial markets, tensions across a wide range of critical foreign policy arenas. Shouldn’t we have a Vice President, and a potential President, who actually understands these issues, beyond the preparation necessary for a debate?
Here is her response to a question on the economy, a critical issue, you would agree, Sen. McCain:
COURIC: That answer, Sen. McCain, as noted by Fareed Zakaria, is incoherent.
MCCAIN: Yes. (nodding his head, smiling).
COURIC: Well, isn’t it actually important that a potential President actually comprehend issues? That is, beyond debate preparation?
MCCAIN: No, Katie. That’s what I mean by “gotcha journalism”. It’s obvious from these prior interviews that Palin has little to no comprehension of fiscal policy and economics. For heaven’s sake, she received a “D” in macroeconomics in college! And, as I’ve said in the past, I have little understanding of economic issues myself.
No, what’s important, Katie, is that she sound like she understands the issues. In the debate. If she is sufficiently prepared, she can give an illusion of understanding the issues–even if she is only giving answers with the prepared and practiced spontaneity and content necessary to give that illusion force.
Given that the bar is set at the lowest standard imaginable, Katie, if she accompanies that performance with sufficient charm, we believe that media will follow, into focusing on the change from that low standard, and on those superficial entertainment values–you know, Katie, (McCain smiles through tight lips and squinting eyes and moves his hands up and down)–”She certainly appears to be more confident tonight; she appears more poised, coherent, humorous”–rather than her readiness to be President from an objective standard. After all, using the more important standard of Presdidential capability, she has already demonstrated that she is unprepared to be President.
So, Katie, we want them to focus on that difference, on her debate preparation, rather than on her actual well-demonstrated Presidential unreadiness. And that’s what I mean by “gotcha journalism.”
KATIE: But if I understand you correctly, Sen. McCain, you actually believe that it’s not important that she understand the issues actually facing the nation…
MCCAIN: Right.(nodding)
COURIC: On which many people’s very jobs, health and life will rely at this critical time…
MCCAIN: Yes.
COURIC: And that all that really matters is creating a standard so low that she actually is rewarded for her widely seen and repeatedly demonstrated lack of knowledge and understanding. That we would be using what is essentially a remedial standard for Presidential capability–rather than one of actual capability.
Sen. McCain, you seem to be actually suggesting that we should decide that she is ready for the Presidency, simply because, after preparation, she has improved. Even though just days earlier, time after time, she was unable to give coherent answers on these subjects.
No one can gain Presidential-level understanding in days. And in the office of the Presidency, with its intense crises and unforseeable events, she will not be prepared for each unpredictable day, as she was for the debate.
Yet you expect media to focus on these values, rather than actual readiness to be President. That’s what you mean by “gotcha journalism”?
MCCAIN: Exactly. And they will. Katie, I would say to the media: Once again–we “gotcha” to lower the bar. We “gotcha” to set expectations far below those actually required for a President. We “gotcha” to focus on characteristics unrelated to Presidential capability, and to ignore her statements on these issues made only days earlier–as if a few days of debate preparation can erase a glaring and dangerous actual lack of knowledge and preparedness. Yes, indeed–we “gotcha”. (smiles).
COURIC: How can you expect the media to fall for that?
MCCAIN: It worked for Bush.

This is the United States Of America, I cant understand why all of us Americans cant just be decent and civilized. All this harsh and negative talk just makes our country seem so devided! We all have a choice in our political views, bashing Palin or Biden is not the way to be. The candidates should be able to impress or dissatisfy us ,then we can choose on our own not by someone trying to convince us that Palin is an airhead and Biden is washed up. Let Americans decide without all the HATE.

Yeah…part of that might be because the theory of Marxism wasn’t generated until after the era of the founding fathers.
If you think Obama is a “socialist”, you are truly ignorant of history or even what the term socialism means. It’s not surprising to me then that you would embrace an ignorant yokel like Sarah Palin who is incapable of naming Supreme Court cases or newspapers.
Speaking of socialism, your beloved John McCain is a huge backer of the current bailout bill, which is basically giving the federal government unprecedented authority in the national economy. Obama and McCain actually don’t differ much in this regard, so if you’re really so terrified of the dreaded “socialism” perhaps you should go vote for Bob Barr.

Bill Maher had a brilliant quote on his Daily Show appearance that went something like this:
“There ARE two Americas. On one hand we have a progressive secular European nation that we’d like to live in, but it can’t be born fully because it’s being strangled by this other, stupid redneck nation.”
This is exactly correct. There are two Americas. One America is about progressive social and economic policies and an educated and enlightened view of the world, and the other America is about idiocy, ignorance, religious extremism, hatred, guns, and stone age economics.
Sometimes I think the USA should just split into two separate nations officially, so the rest of us don’t have to be told what to do by a bunch of red state hicks.
Sarah Palin is a disgrace on the entire country. It’s like a joke. It almost seems like a parody, but terrifyingly, it’s real.
Honestly, if all of my family didn’t live here and if I didn’t want to work in the movie industry, I would move to Canada, Britain, New Zealand, or Australia without hesitation. The widespread ignorance in this country is depressing.

Reading this blog has made me happier than I have been in months. It just confirms what I suspected…that Americans are still smart, savvy, well educated and discerning. Sarah Palin is, without question, the single most scary issue facing us today, with the potential to negatively affect the future of all Americans. She is not qualified to be Governor of Alaska, much less V-Pres or President of the U.S. She would take away our reading choices, our birth control choices, our reproductive choices, and perhaps even our spiritual choices. I can see a National “fundamentalist” church in our future if she should ever rise to power. Hey–”a heartbeat away from the Presidency” takes on new meaning when the Presidential candidate is 72 years old! For those misguided souls who think Sarah/Barbie/Mom is the answer to our problems, please get a grip and grow up!

I can’t wait for Obama to be president. I’ve always wondered what it would be like to live in a communist country where the small children are indoctrinated at a small age and sing songs of praise to their leader. I would LOVE to have a terrorist group live right next door, I could really learn a lot about how to make their bio-terror weapons! What fun! I can’t wait to work my butt off and hand it over to Obama to pass out to those who don’t want to work, Oh what a great idea! with Obama as president, I don’t have to work! I want to know what it feels like to not have freedom of speech, I hear they are already doing that in Missouri, anyone heard how that’s going? I love Obama so much that I hope he expands Channel 73, Obama channel to EVERY channel. I didn’t want to see my favorite shows anymore anyway. And really, who needs the American flag, it’s old. You know, out with the old, in with the new. I’ll hang Obama’s beautiful seal on my flag pole everyday! And really, we need to get rid of all the pesky nuclear weapons, we won;t need them anymore, Iran and Venezuela have some and since we will be a part of their communist country, we can just use theirs! Oh Oh, and the Qaran? LOVE IT, want to read it everyday. And those burka’s they wear in Iran? They are sooo in.
I am so excited,as if you couldn’t tell. Peace be with you and God Bless you Messiah! Pelosi is right, You are just who we’ve been waiting for!

S Adams is an example of everything that is wrong with this country. This shows you what a lack of education does to a population. No critical thinking skills whatsoever. It’s so sad.
Hey, Adams, please learn what communism is. You obviously have no clue.
By the way, the bail out plan currently in Congress represents the largest amount of control the federal government will have ever taken over the economy, and this is happening under the rule of George W Bush, and it is supported by BOTH John McCain and Barack Obama. Obama and McCain do not have large differences when it comes to economic regulation at this point, so if you’re so terrified of “communism” I guess you’ll be voting for Bob Barr or Chuck Baldwin, right?
Please, go for it. The rest of us realize it’s time to get over this Cold War stigma of government intervention in economic matters. Europe does this brilliantly, as does Canada, so I’m sure we could manage it if politicians start ignoring the ignorant hicks of the country and start using their brains.
Posted by: Glen | October 2, 2008, 7:18 pm 7:18 pm
The only people who support Sarah Palin are religious fanatics or the very poorly educated. Christian extremists on the far right will support any of their own no matter what their other qualifications are, and idiots are blindly taken in by her folksy “authentic” persona despite the fact that she obviously has no clue whatsoever when it comes to any of the issues.
This is a very sad time for America when such an ignorant individual can rise to such an important political position. There was a time in this country when education and intellect were valued, but these traits have become demonized by the far right. It’s pathetic.
Sarah Palin makes even George W Bush look somewhat competent.
Posted by: Huckster | October 2, 2008, 7:23 pm 7:23 pm
I am a moderate who has, in most instances, voted Republican. No longer. I will gladly vote for Obama/Biden in 2008.
I used to respect John McCain, but his deceptive and atrocious conduct during this campaign has made me see him for what he really is. He has lost all credibility with his reckless and politically motivated selection of Sarah Palin as Vice President.
John McCain is very old, so it is not outside the realm of possibility that the Presidency will wind up in Sarah Palin’s lap. This is ludicrously dangerous. She is obviously incompetent and completely ignorant on just about every issue out there. I am horrified at the prospect of such an, excuse the term, but idiot, being in the White House.
Intellect is something to be prized, not mocked. The Republican party has a whole have sold out to Christian extremists and militant neoconservatives and they are no longer the Party I registered with so long ago.
I am now a registered Independent, but I will proudly vote Democrat for the forseeable future until the Republican Party wakes up.

Thank you Glen. The republican party counts on ignorance and patriotism. Taking everything and anything out of context and shove it down our throats as the truth. Well I loved the debate and quite franckly think Sarah Palin did a great job at making Biden look a little out of it. She showed he’s and Barack Obamas voting records to the table and ate them up. The media made sure to say that she didn’t answer all the questions but neither did Biden. You can’t! Palin/McCain 2008 or wait!

Sarah changed my mind, I am now voting for McCain/Palin! Sorry Obama.
