I have no idea what she is talking about. Her 1st amendment rights are not being abridged. The first amendment guarantees her right to free speech, not a hypothetical right to be free from the media critiquing it as negative. She can say whatever she wants as long as she does not libel anyone, but the media, through their own first amendment rights, can spin it any way they want as well. She really knows next to nothing of the Constitution or the Bill of Rights!

She was allowed to say it, so how have her Free Speech Rights been violated? Reporters publishing her words, then labeling them as negative, is an example of both parties exercising free speech. She just doesn’t understand the Constitution.

So because the press exercises their first amendment right to talk about what Palin has said on the campaign trail, which Palin said using her first amendment rights while on the campaign trail…that means she is having her first amendment rights suppressed? Here’s the ultimate solution to President McCain’s problems. He can appoint Vice President Palin to the Supreme Court, thus removing her from the Executive Branch line of fire, and, at the same time, adding a really innovative Constitutional thinker to the bench.
This will give her a second chance to read the Constitution since her last in-depth study of the subject in the 8th Grade.

This is yet more proof that Sarah Palin is unfit for office. First off, the 1st amendment applies to government action. The government can not implement policies or laws which curb free speech. There is nothing happening on this front AT ALL. Second off, free speech is a two way street. You get to speak your mind but others get to speak your mind about what you say. There is no problem here, this is a Diva whining that nobody is buying into her unfounded unproven assertions and that people are calling BS because it is BS. I find it laughable that a McCain supporter who seems uninformed would say Palin is more qualified than Obama. To make that assessment one has to be informed themselves. Anyone calling Obama a socialist is expressing their ignorance of either the term or Obama’s policies.
The Economist magazine and The Financial Times have both endorsed Obama. Many newspapers that supported Bush in the past years support Obama this year. Many papers that support both McCain and Obama have questioned the suitability of Palin. None have questioned Obama.
It requires a certain level of ignorance to defend Palin’s competence for the job or a severe level of partisan bias that makes thing an impossibility.

Friday, October 31 obviously there will be no release of medical records, no press conferences, no knowledge of the modern world i.e. fruit flies, global warming etc. I really do not understand how anyone could support this woman. 1) A negative attack can be true, but still be negative. A positive argument is one you make to promote yourself. A negative argument is one you make against your opponent. How do you not understand this subtlety? Whether or not the content is “negative” is subjective, and irrelevant. You have been doing nothing but negative campaigning since you first appeared and to argue other wise is mind-bending sophestry.
2) You have a complete lack of any understanding about constitutional law, which is fine for ordinary citizens untrained in the law, but terrifying considering how often you invoke it and because of the office that you seek. The Constitution establishes and limits our govnerment. The first amendment is meant to protect citizens from the intrusion of government into our right to free speech. It does not apply to individuals (except in very limited circumstances).
Palin, you are shameless. You have zero humility. You either don’t know what you don’t know, or you don’t care. This insults me (a lawyer) who takes all of this very seriously, because you clearly do not take this seriously.
Finally, you are a public figure running for office. The tort liability the for libel that the media faces for negative reports on you must meet a much lower level of scrutiny than that for ordinary citizens. Learn some f@#$%ing law if you plan to be executing them!

I have always been an advocate of debate. I feel it is an important forum for the exchange of information and ideas. Whether you are an Obama proponent or one for McCain is immaterial what is germane what is important is the free flow of information which a good healthy debate brings about. It is for this reason which I find the current level of discourse so appalling. By denigrating the debate to the level of personal attacks upon fellow debaters it only cheapens the process and acts to stifle the debate. With some much animosity and acrimony in our society today what we need more of is civility and less personal attacks to aid the flow of information. The personal attacks only act to halt the debate not propel it. My question to both sides is what are you afraid of?

Sarah Palin is a walking train wreck. Her nomination was the beginning of the end for the McCain campaign. - Couldn’t name ONE magazine or publication she has read to keep her informed of world events
- Gave a completely wrong and hilarious definition of what the powers of the VP are – twice

- An impartial investigative body found her to have abused her power as Governor of Alaska in the Troopergate scandal
- Her husband was an active member of a secessionist party that regularly defaced the wonderful USA she claims to love
- She openly declared there is a “real America” – of course meaning, the conservative, God-fearing Americans, not the evil, Hollywood leftists who secretly hate this country and worship Satan
- She spent more money on her wardrobe than most families make in a year – while at the same time trying to appeal to these same families
- She has consistently refused to speak to the press, with McCain going so far as to make the condition of her press conferences to “be nice to her”
- Her off-the-cuff speech ability is nearly as poor as Bush’s, and her body language (winks, head tilts, small town euphamisms) is neither professional or presidential
- She thinks dinosaurs and humans co-existed 6000 years ago. LOL, just LOL
- She won’t say it on public television, but she believes homosexuality is a choice, and if people “stay gay,” they do not deserve state and federal rights given to straights
- She has consistently fostered an atmosphere of fear and paranoia about Barack Obama, while offering no substantive ideas of her own
- When pressed on specifics about McCain’s track record and current agenda, all she can respond with is “He is the real maverick” and/or “We’re going to shake up Washington.” How Sarah?
The list could go on, but it’s already pretty massive considering how short of a time she’s been in the spotlight. My own personal politics aside, I think no one can argue she is simply not ready for the position of VP, let alone Pres, and it’s going to take a long time to get there if she ever does.

Why should we be surprised that the GOP nominated another person who doesn’t have even a basic understanding of the constitution? My First Amendment freedom to troll is being threatened.

There’s a difference between a negative ad and an attack ad. A negative ad usually deals with what the opponent wants to do if he or she is elected, so it routinely has to do with policies. What Palin and McCain do is distort Obama’s proposals and then criticize their own distortions. An attack ad is routinely personal in nature and one in which an unproven or irrelevant piece of information is talked about in order to create suspicion about the opponent. This involves innuendo, guilt-by-association, insinuation and other tactics made famous by Joe McCarthy in the 1950′s. If you mention Wright, Ayers, Khalidi or Rezko enough times, even though you’ve provided not one relevant fact, people will begin to connect dots that weren’t there in the first place. That’s what Palin and McCain have been doing. It’s called “The Big Lie” strategy.

Who is stopping this woman from saying stupid things? I don’t understand, unless she thinks playing the victim to the media sets her up for the next election. I also want to see her release her medical records.

The fact that the Governor so audaciously mis-cites the First Amendment to the Constitution is appalingly stupid for someone who cliams to be ready to be VICE-President, not to mention President. The First Amendment prohibits Congress from limiting free speech (or establishing a state religion), not requiring press outlets to say what you want or spin how you want or even to cover your campaign. Not to see the not so subtle difference here is sub-par at best. If this is seriously what the Republican base wants to stand by as a candidate, let it be known right now, that their ‘Country First’ argument lies in tatters; they have debased the Republic yet again with their willful ignorance and fear of knowledge. Hillary reminded us that instead of voting yes or no on his Illinois senate bills, he just voted present. In the us senate, he did not even vote 80% of the time – check out his voting record Or, are you just voting for him just because he has you hypnotized by his mesmerizing voice? He never even showed up for his own committee meetings. When he showed up at all, he was always late. Even France’s president has made it very clear how dangerous his immaturity is. Obama must not have had his puppet master around to tell him exactly what to say. Vote for a real man who will do the right thing for you – he won’t take advantage of you. It is about time someone decided to cut government spending. If you worked where I did and saw the waste I saw, you would refuse to pay any taxes at all.

Concerning the baby: Sarah’s story is that:(1) her water broke; (2) she delivered a 30-minute talk to a meeting of the National Republican Governors; and (3)then flew 11-12 hours back to Alaska to have the baby. Any woman whose water breaks cannot do all of that. She also did not tell anyone she was pregnant until the 7th month but her pictures look like they do now. Compare pictures of her when she really was pregnant. Meanwhile Bristol transferred from Wasilla High to Anchorage High but stayed out of school for 5 months with a really bad case of “mono.” In addition there is no record at the Wasilla Hospital of a birth on the date that has been claimed. You didn’t hear from me — look it up.
In addition, Sarah Palin has a big mouth but she really is a very ignorant person. It is so clear, compare her to any woman on the political stage. Of course Palin and Bachmann of Minnesota are twins. Degrees and positions are not mitigating factors for ignorance; they never are and never will be.

I’m a Christian Conservative–and Sarah Palin doesn’t speak for me–and she doesn’t speak for Jesus either. My first impression of her was that she was probably the most vicious girl in high school — the one who liked to pick on the kid with the funny name — and especially liked to do it when others were around to go along with her.
Everything she’s said has increased that impression tenfold. And if this should be laid at the vicious speechwriters behind her–well, then it certainly doesn’t say much about her character either.
Though the articles I’ve read seem to confirm that lying and scheming to get ahead are a firm part of her modus operandi.
The October surprise this year should have been a full-scale expose on her ties with the Alaska Independence Party and what they’ve done to further her career — getting it off the ground in Wasilla and helping to get her elected. She attended their conference in 1994–then they helped get her elected by spreading lies about the incumbent mayor–Joel Stein. She attended their conference in 2000, and then again in 2006–this time as a SPEAKER (wish we had the video of THAT!). In November, 2007, Dexter Clark is at the Secessionists Conference in Chattanooga, bragging about how Sarah was a member, but she went along to get along and joined the Republican party before she ran for mayor. Finally–just this year, she tapes a message to their convention and tells them to keep up the good work!
I can’t think of any other Governor that would even have the inclination to go to these people’s meetings–much less give them legitimacy. These are claims about “gee, she knows somebody who did something 40 years ago”–these are HER own actions that she should be held accountable for.
I think if Jesus came in and watched her rally and how she lies without blinking and slanders, He’d say, “you know them by their fruits”.

For the sake of Palin and her fellow right-wingers who feel deeply victimized by the fact that the press can criticize them, I propose the formation of a Wingnut Party, whose members are never criticized in any way but are not allowed to appear on any ballot or be covered by any members of the media. They could secede from the Union and we’d never know it, and they should probably go ahead and do so if they feel that our Bill of Rights is so profoundly unfair to them. Seriously, what will this person do when she no longer has McCain’s flunkies to protect her from the press?

Palin’s statement about the media and the 1st amendment belie an astonishing — just astonishing — amalgam of ignorance, perverse logic and right-wing double-think.
1. The 1st Amendment provides that “Congress shall make no law . . . abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press.”
A journalist’s criticism of Palin’s negative campaigning is not Congress making a law, much less a law abridging freedom of speech. Nor is it abridging freedom of the press (quite the opposite, it is an EXERCISE of freedom of the press).

2. Palin’s remark reduces to the proposition that “freedom of speech” means the freedom to express only those views that she agrees with. Here is the basic logic (beginning by taking as correct Palin’s erroneous assumption that the 1st Amendment guarantees freedom of speech):
The 1st Amendment guarantees freedom of expression;
Palin has a point of view (re. Obama’s alleged “associations”);
Palin expresses her point of view.
The press characterize Palin’s point of view as “negative campaigning”;
The public are persuaded by the press that Palin’s point of view is properly characterized as “negative campaigning”;
In the face of the public’s reaction to Palin’s point of view, Palin feels constrained to continue to express her point of view;
Because Palin feels constrained to continue to express her point of view, (here comes the lie) it must follow that the press are calling for the abridgement of Palin’s right to express her point of view.
Since the 1st Amendment (supposedly) guarantees freedom of speech, to honor that guarantee, the press must refrain from expressing a point of view different from Palin’s.
Hence, freedom of speech means the freedom to either (a) express views with which Palin agrees, or (b) express no view at all (i.e., keep you mouth shut).
In brief, freedom of speech means the freedom to agree with Palin. Correlatively, disagreeing with Sarah Palin is unconstitutional.

Places where the politicians can say anything without fear of media scrutiny are usually called Dictatorships. Perhaps Palin want us to be more like Cuba or China?

You know, this is really irresponsible blogging/reporting whatever you want to call it—it is merely a platform for a political figure to send out her message, uncontested and unchecked for reality. How hard would it have been to call up a media expert and say, “Hey, so does Palin have a point here?” You know someone to offer a thoughtful appraisal. My reasoning was that Sarah Palin could not be as dumb as she appeared in those interviews and that McCain’s attempt to keep her away from the press only magnified her mistakes and missteps. But, alas, I now KNOW why McCain sequestered Palin–she is a talking time bomb. If you give her any substantial airtime, eventually she just says something so utterly stupid and indefensible that you have to ask yourself, “Did she really just say that?” And this time she can’t blame this on the “gotcha”, “liberal”, “elitist” MSM either. She’s preaching to the choir in this interview with the conservative, Chris Plante. Her interpretation of the first amendment right would be laughable… except that she is running for the highest office in the land. I now completely understand why McCain initially had a muzzle on her. Intellectually, she’s very, very, very weak. How can someone aspiring to the highest office of the land even make this ridiculous claim of her first amendment right being violated by the press? Palin is so utterly unqualified to lead this country. Period. I don’t care if she had 40 years of executive experience or is a maverick that had reformed the entire good-ole boy, corrupt political system in Alaska. She doesn’t DESERVE to be anywhere near the White House. And for all of these gatorade-drinking Palin supporters, how can you continue to defend these indefensible statements? A man is born of a woman who happens to be white and whose father happens to be black. Does that make him white, black or a something else? In this case one candidate is all. Does it make him less of an American? It might if you see color and not the man.
In Jewish and other traditions, the mother determines the religion, class, race and tribe. But even if that does not control the emotions of a few, I have no fear of the so-called “Bradley effect” because:
I believe in the “Obama effect”, to rise above the past bias, ignorance and lies meant to divide and create senseless fear.
I believe deep down every conservative and every liberal each in their own way believes in America, its claim that every man and woman is equal in the eyes of the law, in our treatment of each other and the equal opportunity every American shares with every other American to reach their highest goals, the farthest stars, even if one of them is the dream to become President.
I believe Americans want an open society built on the true and growing, ever changing traditions that are afforded in our Declaration of Independance, our oft amended Constitution and Bill of Rights and memorialized at the Statue of Liberty:

I believe that Americans are tired of false prophets whose open involvement of our political structure are causing a debasement and destruction of those who hold strong, dear, loving and accepting traditions in their religious expressions.

I believe that Americans will not be driven by transparent and desperate attacks built on fear, lies and prejudices but for the first time in a long time accept that they were skillfully and puposefully manipulated to vote against their own economic, family and political interests and will say, “No more!”, “No mas!” Enough!
If these beliefs are not true, the hate mongers win and we should close the doors of America, build fences around each state, county, city and village and triple lock our doors.
America. You have a great opportunity to regain the good name of America at home and abroad, improve democracy and your own family’s economic well-being. If you can’t do it for yourself, do it for your own children and grandchildren.

We are not good follows and believers in Obama when we get to the level of attacking, especially the expressions of anger seen here. Win them over. Do not copy their methods. Give facts as best you can and let them decide. Rise above the situation and ignore the silliness. Palin is not the issue. America is.
A man is born of a woman who happens to be white and whose father happens to be black. Does that make him white, black or a something else? In this case one candidate is all. Does it make him less of an American? It might if you see color and not the man.
In Jewish and other traditions, the mother determines the religion, class, race and tribe. But even if that does not control the emotions of a few, I have no fear of the so-called “Bradley effect” because:
I believe in the “Obama effect”, to rise above the past bias, ignorance and lies meant to divide and create senseless fear.
I believe deep down every conservative and every liberal each in their own way believes in America, its claim that every man and woman is equal in the eyes of the law, in our treatment of each other and the equal opportunity every American shares with every other American to reach their highest goals, the farthest stars, even if one of them is the dream to become President.
I believe Americans want an open society built on the true and growing, ever changing traditions that are afforded in our Declaration of Independance, our oft amended Constitution and Bill of Rights and memorialized at the Statue of Liberty:

I believe that Americans are tired of false prophets whose open involvement of our political structure are causing a debasement and destruction of those who hold strong, dear, loving and accepting traditions in their religious expressions.

I think that she has a point,sad but true.First of all he left his church for political reasons and then act as if he had know idea Rev.Wright was like that,and second don’t let me get started about his house which he bought for 300,000 under the asking price years before the market crashed.Third he has as many shady friends as a dog flees also he broke his word when it came to public finance of his campaign.

I wish Governor Palin would have actually read the constitution at some point in her political career. She makes these ridiculous gaffes that embarrasses all women. First, she “reinterprets” the constitution with regard to the role of the Vice President and now she displays her clear lack of understanding of first amendment rights.
God help our country should she ever set foot in the oval office. This woman is not just woefully underqualified. She is to cite a McCain official “a whack job.”

So Palin is concerned about her 1st amendment rights as she attacks Obama, but the Press, who also have 1st Amendment rights are not entitled to critize her for her attacks.
That sounds a bit hypocritical. Okay, it actually very hypocritical. She should be entitled to say what she wants about Obama, but the press can’t say what they want about her.

Reasons for Real Fear
Many years ago, a man named Allen Drury wrote an extraordinarily frightening book called Come Nineveh, Come Tyre. I first read it when I was in early my teens; I was truly afraid for the United States as many of the possible political denouements described in the book seemed about to come true. I first read the book in the late 60s/early 70s, during the time of “revolution” and “social dissent.” The book clearly delineated where such thinking could lead us.
Thankfully, solid people have been at the helm of the country since that era, for the most part, and what appeared to be the inevitable end was averted. It appears now, however, that the end was not averted but merely delayed. The current political situation is slowly developing into an exact replica of the fearful descriptions about which Mr. Drury warned all those many years ago.
The fear engendered by the book is nothing to the deep, cold, almost paralyzing fear that many clear-headed Americans feel today. We are faced with the possible election of exactly the type of man who may not only bring the United States to the brink of disaster, but actually take the country over the edge into disaster and ultimate destruction.
Ever since Mr. Obama gained the Democratic Party’s nomination as their candidate for the Presidency of the United States, I have had a gnawing fear deep in my soul. As the candidate’s popularity has surged in recent weeks, the cold deep fear has gotten colder and deeper.
It was clear to me almost from his very first appearance as “The Candidate,” that the Democratic Party had finally made a choice that, should it be validated by majority vote in the national elections, may well doom the United States forever.
Very well, the last may well be a tad overdramatic, but not too much so, I daresay.
Should Mr. Obama ascend the high office of President of the United States despite the clear view we have had into the man – absolutely no experience to speak of worthy of the position, partners and supporters with extremely concerning characteristics (Ayres, Flagle, Wright, et al), complete lack of substance (but lots of “style!); dubious, to say the least, connections with an organization creating extraordinary concerns about the upcoming voting process (ACORN) – the world, when our enemies have taken a break from celebrating his ascension, will have nothing to say about our troubles than to remind us that we brought them on ourselves, that we chose this.
Mr. Obama and his followers have scaled the heights of inappropriateness from the start, helped no end by his media and those single-minded, unthinking supporters who merely hear what they want to hear, without an instant’s thought for the consequences.
Let me give some quotes from Mr. Drury’s insightful novel and how they almost tell the story of this year’s campaign, and show where we are headed should an Obama Presidency come to pass.
The following is an excellent description of the current liberal media’s general behavior almost since the start of the Obama candidacy and what they have provided as “explanations” and “responses” to any criticism of Mr. Obama. This is also a perfect description of Mr. Biden’s refusal to respond to a legitimate question from a legitimate news organization.
“ … Listen to them rationalize, listen to them pussyfoot, listen to them tiptoe and hide and evade and duck out from under the burden that history has put on them! Listen to them howl down dissent! It is all they can do in a crisis . . . It is all they have left!” … “So let them howl down opinions they don’t like, if they really think that’s worthy of what used to be a great Republic—if they really think that’s the way to make themselves safe, when the day comes that somebody doesn’t like their opinions…”
Mr. Drury also speaks to the type of consequences inherent in the extreme liberal perspective of Mr. Obama and those who subscribe to his thinking. Remember, Mr. Obama stated in public that he would be willing to meet with known terrorist nations without establishing preconditions. (The campaign later “explained” the comment to reflect what the Candidate really meant by saying that the meetings would not be on the Executive level but on the Secretarial level.)
Regardless, it is clear that there is a complete lack of comprehension as far as dealing with terrorists and terrorist nations is concerned. This mentality is very clearly described in the following:
“… The President of the United States and his perennially hopeful country had once again overlooked the one thing they never quite understand and never quite dare acknowledge to themselves: the endless and unrelenting malevolence of those who … wish them ill.”
There have always been and will always be (as proven on 09/11/01, and subsequent attacks since) those who detest, hate, and fear the United States (and those who may support her) to such an extent that they would do anything and everything in their power to destroy us. Unfortunately, it appears that in recent years, many of those who would destroy us are already within us.
Their naïveté and self-delusion have brought us to the point where the seemingly most popular candidate for President of the United States is one of which other countries will doubtless approve. Is there any question as to why other countries will approve of an Obama Presidency as opposed to a McCain Presidency?
Because Mr. Obama has already shown, by his past and current associations, his comments, and his behavior, that he is quite open to “negotiating” with those who wish us harm.
One of Mr. Obama’s “charms,” it can be said, is his desire (insistence, rather) to end all wars in which the United States is currently involved, regardless of risk to the safety and security of our country. An unfortunately large number of the population appears to desire this, as well. They, of course, are the “peace-loving” population of the country while those of us who wish to try to ensure our safety and security are designated as war-mongers.
Since it is clear that the naïveté of Mr. Obama and his followers runs very, very deep, let me provide the astute Mr. Drury’s definition of peace per the lexicon of those who have always hated the United States and will continue to do so until their hatred triumphs.
“They are besotted by the word ‘peace,’ the Americans. They do not realize that in all of human history peace has never really existed: there has only been an occasional uneasy absence of war. The fact does not fit comfortably with the clichés of [liberal America]. To acknowledge it is too difficult and too demanding. Clichés are more comfortable. Americans want comfort above all things. Ergo…history proceeds.”
We must ask in fear – now – before it is too late, where is this country going to proceed under an Obama presidency? In what direction, really, will the so-called “change” which he and his supporters bandy about so easily, take this country?
Is it not starkly clear, yet, that the abyss is growing ever closer? Do we not yet realize that the many, many incidents of attempts to shut down free expression and free speech have already started the slide?
Do we not already understand that the very fear that so many of us already feel is a bright spotlight on the many reasons this man and his supporters should not be given free rein in the White House?
I think Allen Drury had the perfect description of the reaction of one of our country’s enemies in reaction to exactly the type of action Mr. Obama claims to plan: wave the white flag of surrender.
“… it is the most noble, the most generous, the most statesmanlike and humanly decent policy any President of the United States has tried to follow… To us, it seems a spirit of true nobility and grandeur. We think, if you will forgive me, … he is infinitely better, from the world’s standpoint than the last two Presidents.”
Should the world’s opinion really matter to the United States so much? Must we really put ourselves in a position of appeasing and slavish agreement to all “requests”/demands that come from the world, no matter how the “requests” may affect the security and safety of the United States?
I do not believe for an instant that Mr. Obama has the intestinal fortitude or moral fiber to stand up to the enemies of the United States. Not only has it been made clear in his own speeches, behavior, and the behavior of his supporters, but it is clear in the reactions of the world that is already lauding an Obama Presidency.
The ascendance of Mr. Obama and his supporters to the Presidency of the United States will be nothing more than the ultimate victory of …

How is her freedom of speech being violated? She’s been free to say anything she chooses. Is it the fault of the press that she’s so unprepared, so lacking in knowledge and intellect? She hasn’t been misquoted. Rather she’s been honest in her comments and, as a result, given the American public a close look at who would be a heartbeat away. The results? Pretty damn scary.
Thank God we have freedom of speech, otherwise we’d never know how incompetent this woman is.
A heartbeat away…and McCain’s health is questionable. Any good American could never let that happen… never let Palin be anything other than a casual visitor to the Whitehouse.

The author of this article has a COMPREHENSION problem or is trying to distort what was said by Palin. The rest of you who blindly agree with him points to the original problem Palin was expressing. The media distorting and attacking just like the title of this article does.

She may not know what the Bush Doctrine is (that the U.S. has a right to preemptively strike, as we supposedly did in Iraq), but she sure knows the Palin codicil to the First Amendment, which states:
Thou (elite, liberal, gotcha, “not pro-America” media) shall not disparage, denigrate nor criticize the proclamations of any evangelical Republican candidate regarding an opponent.
If that sounds more like a commandment than an amendment, you’re right. Any faithful, far-right, evangelical and respectable Republican would recognize it immediately as the 11th Commandment. The 12th says that, while our government may not declare an official religion:
Thou (evangelical Republican candidate) shall covertly impose thine own interpretation of Christian values on all citizens regardless of their own religion, whether or not they consent.
