Palin Parses

When asked by a reporter today, "Governor, did you abuse your power?" Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin said, "No, and if you read the report you’ll see that there was nothing unlawful or unethical about replacing a cabinet member. You gotta read the report, sir."

It’s true that there’s nothing "unlawful or unethical about replacing a cabinet member" in principle.

But the report is not as Gov. Palin is presenting it, in terms of ethics laws.

To wit:

"I find that Governor Sarah Palin Abused her power by violating Alaska Statute 39.52.110(a) of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act…

"Compliance with the code of ethics is not optional…

"The evidence supports the conclusion that Governor Palin, at the least, engaged in ‘official action’ by her inaction if not her active participation or assistance to her husband in attempting to get Trooper Wooten fired [and there is evidence of her active participation.] She knowingly, as that term is defined in the above cited statutes, permitted Todd Palin to use the Governor’s office and the resources of the Governor’s office, including access to state employees, to continue to contact subordinate state employees in an effort to find some way to get Trooper Wooten fired. Her conduct violated AS 39.52.110(a) of the Ethics Act…

"Governor Palin knowingly permitted a situation to continue where impermissible pressure was placed on several subordinates in order to advance a personal agenda."

So who needs to read the report?

Jake can you give us the link to the report and while you are at it do you have a link to any trial documents from Rezko?

Jake in a couple of months you have spent more words assailing Palin over the silliest things; but yet you seem to miss all the things in the pasts of Obama and Biden.
Does the term “in the tank” ring a bell?

I read the report and couldn’t put it down. These people, as a TIME article says, engaged in “a co-ordinated application of pressure on Monegan so transparent and ham-handed that it was almost certain to end in public embarrassment for the governor.” Amazingly small-minded and, in the worst sense of the phrase, “small town”.

Sarah, sarah, sarah.
She needs to learn proper damage control. Looking like a weasel isnt really the best tactic.
She should admit the findings and say she diagrees, or charge partisanship. Trying to weasel out of a clear charge of abuse of power is simply stupid.

A personal agenda.
A State Trooper threatened to kill her father.
Personal agenda?
I guess, but where else in the world does a State Trooper get to threaten to kill the father of the Governor and get away with it?

I think people should be asking if she allowed Todd to do what he did because she knew he was not a state employee and could not be officially charged with ethics violations. In other words, she let Todd do it for her own deniability. In my mind, and in legal terms, that is a conspiracy to violate ethics laws.

Palin broke a statute, according to the special investigator appointed by the bipartisan Legislative Council established by Alaska’s Republican-controlled legislature.
I’d like to see some in-depth reporting about the claims that this investigation was unfairly “partisan,” an idea rejected by the Alaska Supreme Court.
Certainly Hollis French said some things which didn’t help (“October Surprise”), and the fact that the head of the project was a Democrat could lend the appearance of partisanship. There were also commenters at the Anchorage Daily News who mentioned Branchflower and his wife had praised Monegan before.
But Alaska has the population of a medium-sized city. So it might be hard to find a qualified investigator totally unfamiliar with all those involved.
I’ve also had a hard time documenting the composition of the Legislative Council conducting the investigation. A poster at DailyKos tallied it as 10 Republicans and 4 Democrats (possibly based on the audio of yesterday’s Legislative Council meeting), but I couldn’t find further proof.
In any case, my understanding is that the Personnel Board Palin claims we should listen to is a 3 person body she actually appointed herself! Claiming that personnel board is the truly authoritative body is as partisan as partisan gets!

read the report
the investigator thinks the threat s were convenient to their argument…but didn’t believe them
read the report it say why.
Palin and Todd are selective in their values…just like the last 8 years.
the bigger issue is what Governor…what professional for that point…
cc’s so many of their gubernatorial emails and lets their spouse dierect their staff and use their office for personal business and otherwise…
could you see Romney or Rendell letting their wives manage their staffs or use their offices for family stuff.?
would you ever see them cc’ing their spouses on state business….as much as Palin did.
this is ridiculous.
she is scary.

The report addressed the idea that Palin was afraid of Wooten.
It mentioned that if she were really afraid, why did she reduce the size of her security detail during the time in question?
And why did Todd Palin repeatedly emphasize that Wooten should be fired because he made the Department of Public Safety look bad, rather than that he was a threat to the Governor.
It also mentioned that firing Wooten might increase the danger of any threat, not reduce it.
The report also noted Sarah Palin’s lack of transparency in refusing to meet with the Legislative Council to clarify these issues.

Yes. I did read part of the report. I am amazed at the number of contacts Sarah, Todd and staff made about this Wooten guy. Really fixated on him. And, I watched as Todd said he mighta made one call. One call, Todd?
I thought is was revealing that they wanted this guy arrested for shooting a moose, when Palin loaned him her tag for the moose, her father butchered the thing, and they all shared the meat? Kinda left that part out, Sarah?
Hired a detective to watch his every move? you’re kinda obsessed with this guy.
Now, the guy had medical o.k. to ride the snowmobile, had permission to use the police vehicle to drop off his kids, but… you just kept at it.
You should have let it go long ago. But, you needed to destroy him.
On another note, you also hired unqualified friends for jobs that you fired others from. She likes cows? Are you kidding me?
An expert on energy? I don’t think so.
The “where’s sarah” buttons? hmmmm.
Todd doesn’t keep a calendar? Isn’t that convenient?
Personal email accounts? again.
I’d say I don’t want your “transparent” style of government… ’cause it’s as phony as you.

I read the report and diffently see she abused her power–and Todd Palin has too much involvement in her position–Think what he will do if she becomes Vice President–HE will be running the country!! Think about this people! She has lied about so many things–how can you not see this???

I honor Mccain for his service and his commitment to cutdown government spending.
But he showed very poor judgments when it comes to two issues.
1) Why did he cheerlead to invade iraq when you haven’t finished the job in iraq
2)Why did ihe pick Palin as his VP with out properly vetting her qualifications.
My guess is that the he is toomuch influenced by the RNC folks including Rove and the smear guys.
He picking Palin is a joke and I strongly belive that he that based on the recommendations from the RNC.
Palin is a joke…
I am soory to say this but she is a disgrace to Alaska and Hillary’s women.
Look at the curreent asministrayin who inheritted surplused and leaving record deficits to the next generation.

Wooten has a LONG list of reprimands. He is bad news. He’s been divorced four times and I’ll let you dig up why.
Where are Monegan’s ethics? What did he violate in not protecting the public from Wooten?
BTW- Palin could fire Monegan for a cloudy day, and the report says that too.

Posted by: drjohn | October 11, 2008, 11:10 am 11:10 am

This is another case in which you have the defense possibly worse than the original offense.
Her defense suggests that she doesn’t have a clue about what kind of conduct is expected of an elected official.
Of course Palin as governor has the authority to fire her public safety commissioner. But what the report highlights and what its conclusion — that Palin has abused her power — is based on is the tremendous pressure that Palin has exerted, directly by herself and indirectly through her husband and subordinates, on her public safety commissioner to fire the trooper. Based on such findings, the report actually concludes that Palin has violated the law.

Posted by: chris | October 11, 2008, 11:10 am 11:10 am

It’s a sad day when even the governor of a state can’t keep a deadbeat ex-brother-in-law who taser shoots a 10-year old boy, threatens to kill her father and seems to be an overall jerk off the police force.
Do you honestly believe that if this guy was one of the “good guys” that the Palin’s would have even cared!
It’s nice that some of you who posted are so high and mighty…but come on people – have you seen what’s in Obama’s past.
How about a nice sweet deal on your house and and adjoining lot from a convicted slum Lord who is one of your biggest supporters. Not to mention sweetheart deal on your mortgage financing. A pastor for 20-years that not only harbors but rejoices in his hate for America and white people.
Give me Sarah Palin – the worse thing they can find is she sticks up for the people of Alaska by keeping some hot-head, child abuser off the police force!!

It’s easy to see how things can be distorted during an election year. That is why it’s a good idea to do what they did in Alaska and have a bipartisan group investigate. It wasn’t really totally bipartisan, there were 2 times as many republicans on the committee. OPPS!

Posted by: jpeezus | October 11, 2008, 11:14 am 11:14 am

No matter how you look at she broke a law.. an ethics law…
Yea, she had a right to fire anyone she chooses that in itself is not breaking the law, but to use your position to satisfy a personal vendetta is breaking the law and that is what Branchflower found thru many pieces of evidence.
Also allowing Toad Palin to use her office and staff to further his obsession with this trooper is a violation …
It is documented in the report that witnesses testified that Toad was in closed door meetings concerning state business and he was also copied on emails to his private account on state business..
That alone is a big violation that she participated in … No one in the private sector has any right to be in a meeting regarding state business or copied on emails.
Which is why the other lawsuit heard on friday had the judge tell Sarah and her staff to preserve all eamils from the private yahoo accounts.
To betray trust is a huge thing… not just firing an employee, but for her to abuse her power by allowing her husband to use her office and staff is just wrong and she was a big part in getting monegan fired.
This is something that is serious, but I am sure the personnel board will not find anything on her.. since they would be concerned about getting fired. They are gutless wonders who are probably as corrupt as her and toad.
Sarah Palin, you are old politics as usual and cannot be trusted.

Katie S.
From CNN
Speaking Thursday to CNN’s Drew Griffin and Kathleen Johnston, Wooten gave his account of the Taser incident but denied ever drinking while driving.
He said that he was a new Taser instructor, and his stepson was asking him about the equipment. “I didn’t shoot him with live, you know, actual live cartridge,” Wooten said. Instead, he said, he hooked his stepson up to a training aid “with little clips. And you know the Taser was activated for less than a second, which would be less than what you would get if you touched an electric fence… It was as safe as I could possibly make it.”
He said his stepson was on the living room floor surrounded by pillows, and that he “was bragging about it,” and that the family laughed about it.
Asked whether it was a dumb decision, Wooten told CNN, “absolutely.”

Okay, while the firing was “within her authority as a governor”, however, the justifications for the dismissal constituted abuse of power, in addition to letting her husband use her office.
She may not have broken the law, but she did violate the ethics code.

was Sarah Todd her sister or any of her family there when he Tasered his stepson.

does that include the woman who is throwing these moronic rallies and can’t answer simple question…and obviously has some issues happeneing when she governs…
did she watch while the kid was tasered?

Posted by: dl | October 11, 2008, 11:19 am 11:19 am

Well, now we know why she and “First Dud” refused to testify — they didn’t want to be subject to Perjury charges to go with the clear ethics violation.
And I wonder about the ruling that she was within her authority to fire him, since the firing was so clearly based on his unwillingness to help her complete her ethically-challenged goal.
This SHOULD be the death of the Palin candidacy, if not the whole ticket. But, of course, they’ll muddle through, playing to their base like “OTown” and merrily losing the election!!!

It is my belief that the American voter can see through the garbage that the MSM is trying to sell us. ARE WE to believe that Palin’s attempt to fire one man disqualifies the Rep ticket. Yet, the sins of Obama have no impact on his judgment, character, or integrity to be the President.
BUT despite what the polls say. The voters hate the Rep. party and Bush and want to punish them desperately. However, the voters still distrust Obama and fear his leadership especially in a time of economic turmoil.

conf1689 & HP – there are as many if not more instances of republican voter fraud than you will ever dig up on the Dem’s… Should we go back to Ohio in 2004, how about Florida in 2000. Or should we discuss the illegal voter roll purges in the south? How about the armed guards at the polling stations intimidating voters of Latino descent in California?? I am a witness to these crimes.

I know that most democrats believe it’s “their time” their turn after 8 years of Bush, but I am not just voting Republican, Im voting for the man I can trust….not someone with so much baggage. It should not have been hard at all for the dems to win this one. I do believe that Obama has made it a very disfunctional election at best.

It’s not surprising that all the folks who thinks it’s ok to do all this stuff are the very ones posting lies and exaggerations about Obama and any “links” to Hamas and Osama.
Get real. You sound like a bunch of crazy hippocrites. You are outright liars.
Look at what rich folks like the Republicans and Rick Davis and Henry Paulson have done to us: made us pay HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS OF OUR HARD EARNED TAX MONEY TO BAIL OUT GREEDY FAT CAT BANKERS. WHY AREN’NT THEY BEING AT LEAST TAXED FOR THEIR GREEDY ERRORS THAT GOT THE COUNTRY FOR THE FINANCIAL MESS WE ARE IN?
DON’T PLAY INTO THEIR PLAYBOOK. THEY ARE USING RACISM TO PULL YOUR STRINGS.
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH ALREADY…………

Posted by: GET REAL | October 11, 2008, 11:37 am 11:37 am

Jake, apparently you need to read the report. And you need to specify that the committee did not vote to approve or recommend the report.
I read the full report and it says that she did nothing wrong in firing Monaghan. It says that Todd Palin was wrong in trying to get the trooper Wooten fired (although it doesn’t show that he did anything but ask about the progress of the case and inform voice his concerns about what the trooper was doing).
It then tries to say that Gov. Palin was in violation of the ethics law for being negligent in not stopping her husband. That finding is clearly at fault in three ways: (1) It nowhere proves that Todd Palin’s actions were illegal – it’s just the opinion of the investigator (2) The ethics statute explicitly says “one cannot negligently or accidentally violate the ethics law”, which is exactly what the investigator accuses her of doing and (3) the statute is specifically about using office in pursuit of personal gain, and goes on to list several examples of personal gain all of which are material in nature. Nowhere in the report does the investigator explain how the Governor would have gained from having Wooten fired.

If Republicans want to push professor Ayers as a dangerous terrorist on the loose why not look for associations that McCain had with terrorists: You don’t need to look any further than Strom Thurmond! A member of the KKK, the worst terrorist group in the history of the US, Strom Thurmond and McCain worked regularly together for years. McCain is totally unrepentant for working with this well known domestic terrorist, part of a group that actually murdered and terrorized hundreds possibly even thousands of Americans in its long history of militant hate.

He won the Republican primary, how can you say it is the voters… He cooked his own goose by selling his soul to the base and abandoning his own beliefs and ethics. As for Sarah, I dont believe she ever had any to begin with.
I think the American people have realized that the politics of slash and burn, lies, and power grabbing is not working. We have chosen a different road, Republican’s are welcome to travel it with us.
Come with us on the path to fixing the problems created by the angry politics of Bush.

John McCain on Barack Obama, 10/10/2008:
“I admire Senator Obama and his accomplishments. I will respect him. I want everyone to be respectful, and let’s make sure we are, because that’s the way politics should be conducted in America.”
“I have to tell you, he is a decent person, and a person that you do not have to be scared (of) as President of the United States.”
“He’s a decent family man, citizen, that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues and that’s what this campaign is about.”

I’ve monitored all the media during the campaign and realised the fix was in early on as all the right wing corp-media worldwide was with BO from the very start. BBC is one of the worst offenders. if you search their archives you will find nothing positive about McCain, in fact very little reporting on his campaign at all. search BO and you will find hundreds of glowing articles and multiple endorsements by celebs, yet very little on policies.
I still cannot believe a majority of dem voters over 30 would vote for BO, so the amount of fraud necessary is huge. the polls have been faked and the corp media has a lot of input in calling the elections, so here’s wishing you strength and courage as you enter the final straight. get the reformers in the white house and then demand reform of the corp media, the elections and the financial system. good luck to you all.

I have been a democrat all of my life. This will be the first time I have voted for a Republican for President. Why? Because Obama is not a true Democrat. Instead, he is a socialist who has created a socialist network, largely run by organizations like ACORN, Bill Ayers, and others. They are subversives. They have taken over the DNC. It isn’t the party of my father and grandfather. It is the party of socialism.
These people scare me. They should scare you too. Now go do your duty and join me in trying to purge them from our party. Or better yet, have them all arrested for their subversive activities. You know, like voter intimidation, registering phantom people to vote and then having someone show yo to vote for that nonexistent person! Oh, and like cheating in the caucuses, strong arming people at the convention, and taking money from foreign sources for the Obama campaign.
Corruption has taken over the DNC. Until you purge it, I am no longer a democrat.

McCain is for keeping the economy free and in the hands of the people rather than government. McCain is for keeping health care choices in the hands of the people instead of mandated by government. McCain is for keeping the American military strong and fit to defend our country and our freedoms. McCain has PROVEN THROUGH HIS ACTIONS that he stands for a strong, free America. Do we want to live in the land of our forefathers, “the land of the free and the home of the brave”? or do we want to live in a land of the “dreams of obama’s father”?

I suppose those ten republicans on the panel let him do that to a fellow party member, because you know, there were only 4 democrats on the panel, and all of them voted unanimously to open the investigation and release the report.
Nevermind the investigation all started before Palin was chosen as running mate, Obama is psychic and planted people there to assist in his conspiracy.

I am registered GREEN so I am not a partisan of either major candidate. Palin’s denial of the facts of the report indicate she cannot learn from her mistakes.
Some people are gracious learners. Some people dig in and hold their position, like a pitbull dog.
Such people cannot grasp when a policy is non-productive, like Bush.
NO PALIN in 08. She cannot, and will not learn.
Her 2nd case is even worse. She is being sued by a Republican, for using Yahoo to avoid detection by citizens wishing to use Freedom of Information Act to help police the actions of their governor.

The report states,
“I find that Governor Sarah Palin Abused her power by violating Alaska Statute 39.52.110(a) of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act…
“Compliance with the code of ethics is not optional…”
It was a bipartisan panel consisting of mostly Republicans that decided this. They voted unanimously not to suppress this finding but let the public know about it now.
How can you condone the abuse of ethics and power by a public official.
This is not conjecture or hearsay.
This has been proven.
Now if anyone looks away and try to massage this so that it’s “O.K.” then to these people, anything goes, and they have no right to use the words “ethics” or “fraud” or to make any arguments about ethics or morality at all, because they have destroyed their credibility.

Let’s have a good medical system for everyone.
We may need to have several federal medical schools to end the control the MD’s have over the availability of MD’s. The grads wont go into their practice in debt, because they will work as interns and MDs in Appalachia or the high plains or the inner cities and earn their room and board and tuition.
Socialized medicine depends on having the money to pay for a good system. We have the money for Palin’s war against the Russians, or we have the money for an improved medical delivery system.
We are not England. We can make it work to everyone’s satisfaction and of course, people with big bucks can still buy a heart-lung transplant on the open market.

So far the media coverage of the Palin verdict has been abysmal. This woman ran for governor, and might I add Vice President, on an “ethics reform” platform. She must have thought somebody’s ethics were important, just not her own.
The suggestions that the guilty verdict is somehow a misunderstanding of no consequence is an outrage!
There is also little to no mention of the massive cover-up effort from the McCain campaign. If Palin had nothing to hide then why did she try so hard to hide that nothing?

Jake and the other pretend journalists need to keep their eye on the ball. This enquiry was started to determine if Gov. Palin improperly fired Walter Monegan, a member of her administration. What this investigation has shown is that Monegan is the big loser among all the participants. The record shows that Monegan was fired for cause and the firing was legal. Since there is no evidence that Gov. Palin illegally fired Monegan. Not satisfied with this finding, the witch hunters have turned their attention to the ambiguous subject of ethics. The investigator’s conclusion on the matter of ethics is the result of inference rather than fact. The investigator, being a former prosecutor, knows that inference will not hold water in a court of law, nor will inference matter in the final analysis in the court of public opinion. Opposition partisans and political enemies will try to make much of this investigation. But nothing will come of it, except that Monegan will have to find another way to make a living and eventually, I am sure, Officer Wooten will likewise resign from the Alaska State Troopers. Look for a full disability separation at some time in the future. In all of this, what is most upsetting is the thoughtless, shallow, short sighted commentary expressed by the media and reporters like Jake, in particular. Speaking to them, I would ask you all to listen to Scott Simon’s handling of this story on National Public Radio this morning. If you are looking for someone to emulate in your chosen profession, you will find Scott to be an outstanding, contemporary role model.

Sarah is Guilty of abuse of power as governor. This is an ethics violation. Huge chance of a huge law suit by Trooper Wooten!!! Lawyers will be all over this!!
(1)Firing Police Commissionr Walt Monegan was Sarh Palin’s right – but did find evidence discharge partly due to he said he could not reopen an old investigation report on Trooper Wooten.
(2)Abuse of Power decision – Sarah abuse power as governor by using her position to try to get her brother in-law Trooper Wooten fired.
(3)Sarah Palin claims of threats were only Palin Family verbal complaints. No 911 calls when incidents happened. No audio, video, no other witnesses, no other outside violence complaints. Finally Divorce Trial Judge has dismissed protection order due to lack of evidence. Legislative investigation revealed Palin family actions andf requestsd by Sarh Palin herself to decrease security protection which is usual & customary do not support they were scared
(3)Sarah Palin and McCain Campaign Claims investigation was caused by Democrats and Obama is lie. Started in July. Voted 100% by all legislators -Democrats and Republicans- and Republicans has majority!! Only Palin-McCain Campaign supporters are saying this!!
Sarah Palin is a very dangerous lady!! She has displayed all these types of actions since becoming Mayor of Wasilla. As Mayor she found herself subject of lawsuit too, and only lost because Police Chief work agreement with prior Mayor forgot to have passed through city council.

I trully belive the findings they are factual. We have 10 republicans and 4 democrats in this commitee apainted in fact by a republican. I dont see not one American voting for this team. Folks ABUSE OF POWERS sounds familiar, CHANEY….This is the icing of the cake. Sarah Palin is no reformer, shes a joke. She will go down in History as the worst VP choice. Look at the polls Sarah Palin aproval are falling faster that a high speed rail. Americans are rejecting in big numbers. We republicans need to re-group and that starts with choosing a solid presidential pick, not an erratic one…And picking a qualify VP..Not like Sarah who lacks smartnees, and has not valid foreign experience. I will gladly casrt my vote for the best team and that is not McCain/Palin.

“I find that Governor Sarah Palin Abused her power by violating Alaska Statute …”
Imagine that couple with the power of the vicepresidency. Even Cheney hadn’t shown such blatant tendencies before the Bush/Cheney election; and we know his abuses of power that are yet to come out to light for the Attorney General fiasco. They think public office is like running a corner store.
At this pace Bush is going to have to hand out pardons for the Palins, and the whole GOP before he leaves office.

It’s really odd that in a post about Palin’s abuse of power (and her inability to comprehend the document) that the conversation gets back to Obama. I find it repulsive that the republican campaign this year has no positive message for Americans – everything is anti-Obama.
What’s also clear based on this report and all the other things Palin has concealed is that she is deceitful and has lied about every aspect of her record and experience. We now have a vp candidate that will not have a press conference before the election, has been documented as someone who abuses power, appoints cronies and BFFs to positions of power, shares her governship with her husband, uses personal email for state business, thinks Russia being a neighboring country gives her foreign policy experience, was for earmarks and the bridge before she was against them, and on and on.
When will the press DEMAND a press conference? This is un-heard of, but I guess we can’t expect her to act like a vp candidate when she merely is playing one on tv.
I have had enough of the secrecy, the lack of transparency, the personal vendettas, and her awful vile at these rallies. McCain showed clear lack of judgment in picking her and his honor has been irretrievably damaged because he did not ask her to step down.
As republicans we need to stand FOR someone, not just AGAINST someone else. Enough is enough – we need to re-claim our party from McCain and Palin.

dl I love your state of New Hampshire have vacationed there with family every chance I get. Even bought a house in Lisbon from man we rented from for twenty years. What I fell in love with in New Hampshire 20 years ago is its beauty and more so its Independence and how it didn’t seem political at all. I am a registered ind. And coming from Mass. it was great to get away from the liberals. Planned on retiring in that house I bought. But I did sell it last year realizing so many Mass. libs have moved into your beautiful state and set up permanent residency and in my eyes changed your state. I can’t even tell you how sorry this makes me feel. But I don’t want to move from Mass. into Mass.. I will be there Wednesday though at a Sarah Palin rally and do hope what you’re saying isn’t true. I do hope there are still some Republicans and ind. left in your state.

The fiction:”Not satisfied with this finding, the witch hunters have turned their attention to the ambiguous subject of ethics. The investigator’s conclusion on the matter of ethics is the result of inference rather than fact.
Ethics are defined in Alaskan state rules and laws, and it is by those standards, Palin was found guilty. Moreover, this finding was not based on “inference” but on actual acts and written messages from Palin and her husband. What is an inference, or slur is the writer’s use of the term “witch doctors” for a panel of 10 Repubs and 4 Dems. Or, perhaps he was thinking of the witch doctors that laid hands on Sarah in her church?

I don’t want to be associated with those whom are foolish enough to support the Angry Old Man Mccain, his vile wife, or his crazy running mate palin. I’ll never vote for a republican until they fix their problems. & they’ve got a bunch of problems. Vanessa,
How is that good news for Obama? It was a Republican led administration that got N. Korea to yield to nuclear inspections. The only problem is, just like with Bill Clinton the Bush administration had to subsidize North Korea to make it happen. How does that help our economy? I suppose you are suggesting that Obama was against subsidizing North Korea before he was for it. Oh yes, in that case lets give him all the credit.
By the way, I thought Obama said he was going to stick with public financing? What happened with that pledge?

I remember back when Kerry was running. The word went out for a number of days that Kerry was trying to get John McCain to be his running mate. Some reporter asked McCain if he was considering a run with Kerry. He replied that even though it was a flattering notion, he would pass. This sticks in my mind in a way that I think of it daily.
Back then I remember telling a friend that McCain was going to be hard to beat up against any Democrat come 2008. That was because McCain has the respect of the country, and has been such a friend to the democrats.
I am reassured by John McCain’s presence. Though he wears the republican label, he is a good man. If it were any other republican, I would be still vote as OBUMA is a fraud!

Posted by: HP Boston | October 11, 2008, 12:27 pm 12:27 pm

WestCoastMessenger,
It really depends. It shows Obama’s ability to think ahead, actually (good judgement). He was taking a calculated risk, knowing that if he could raise more then McCain, he would have an advantage and not be curtailed.
I don’t mind his changing his mind, I mean, having a president that sticks too stubbornly to something even after it’s proven wrong isn’t good either (think Bush).
What I find particularly glaring is how McCain has sunk so low in the recent weeks. What happened to “I will not take the low road to the highest office?”

ACORN Fraud In Pennsylvania
Clarice Feldman
The American Spectator documents huge vote registration fraud in Pennsylvania:
A retired Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice says that she is “not confident we can get a fair election” in the state come November.
Justice Sandra Newman, accompanied by Dauphin County District Attorney Edward Marsico and Pennsylvania Republican State Chairman Robert Gleason, expressed her concerns at a Harrisburg press conference this morning. A thick document replete with photo copies of phony registrations and aerial shots of vacant lots used as “addresses” for “voters” was handed out to journalists.
Gleason was even more explicit.
“Between March 23rd and October 1st, various groups, including ACORN, submitted over 252,595 registrations to the Philadelphia County Election Board” with 57, 435 rejected for faulty information. “Most of these registrations were submitted by ACORN, and rejected due to fake social security numbers, incorrect dates of birth, clearly fraudulent signatures, addresses that do not exist, and duplicate registrations. In one case, a man was registered to vote more than 15 times since the Primary election.

Posted by: HP Boston | October 11, 2008, 12:29 pm 12:29 pm

Imagine that it’s November fourth, election day. But after waiting in line, you find out you are not on the voter rolls.
You argue with the poll worker — you’ve voted before! They don’t know why you aren’t on the list, and weren’t trained on what to do. Frustrated and embarassed, you leave without voting.
Purged?
Scenes like this happen more often than you might think, according to a new report from the Brennan Center for Justice. The study found that “thirty-nine states and the District of Columbia reported purging more than 13 million voters from registration rolls between 2004 and 2006.” And while affirming that purges correctly-done are an important way to ensure voter rolls are dependable and up-to-date, the study found that:
“Far too frequently, however, eligible, registered citizens show up to vote and discover their names have been removed from the voter lists. States maintain voter rolls in an inconsistent and unaccountable manner. Officials strike voters from the rolls through a process that is shrouded in secrecy, prone to error, and vulnerable to manipulation.”
Though the report notes that the “secret and inconsistent manner in which purges are conducted make it difficult, if not impossible, to know exactly how many voters are stricken from voting lists erroneously,” it lists multiple instances where tens of thousands of voters were improperly stricken from the rolls.
Protecting Your Vote
The Brennan Center report offers long-term solutions to ensure every eligible voter has a chance to vote. But the 2008 election is just around the corner, and what if you or someone you know is purged?
Election Protection, a non-partisan coalition, offers voter education and protection through an informational Web site and an election hot-line (1-866-OUR-VOTE). They’ve also offer a useful voting checklist flyer you can print out and bring with you to the poll.
Be sure you are properly registered.
Most states require voters to register in advance of an election (though some allow voters to register on Election Day). Deadlines range from 3 to 30 days before an election. To find out if you are properly registered, confirm your address, obtain a copy of a voter registration form, or learn about registration deadlines in your state,

First, McCain commits adultery with his first wife.
Then, McCain is found guilty of using poor judgement in the “Keating Five” controversy.
Then, Sarah Palin supports the Alaska Independent party, attending two of its annual conventions and supporting its efforts to develop an anti-government militia, as reported by media.
Next, Sarah Palin breaks Alaska’s ethics law.
I think I see a definite, anything goes, law-breaking pattern by these two politicians, and that is very bad.
They cannot be trusted in the White House.
Let’s send Palin back to Alaska, and McCain back to his Senate position.

we could bring the networks to their knees if millions of americans agreed to boycott those unfair news networks who stold democracy away from us..
persistent bombardment on a mass scale of the sponsors with threats of boycott of their products would light a huge bonfire under the networks asses..

The reason he has no “troopergate issues” is that he never held an executive position and had “buddies” like Ayers, Rezko, ACORN associates do his dirtywork. Anyone running for POTUS and VPOTUS should not be able to be mauled by just a “biased” media or make a fool of themselves at interviews “because the reporter was biased”. Anyone running for such high offices would be able to stand at least that.
How are they going to face dictators and rogue govts then, if the liberal, biased media is enough to tear them apart?

Her failure to appear bothers me a lot more than “did she or didn’t she?” in Alaska. So far, I have not seen her exhibit any talent beyond memorizing talking points and making quirky facial expressions. Is she not versed enough to articulate the GOP campaign positions?

sharonkilm uses the term “ambiguous subject of ethics” in her post. I’m perplexed by such a non sequiter: the notion that behavior codifed by the State that the executive took an oath of office in is somehow “amibguous” is illogical. The fitness or lack of fitness of Sarah Palin notwithstanding, I’m becoming increasingly dissappointed by the partisan, emotionally charged discourse on both sides that seems to have left any basic understanding of civics, ethics or thoughtful reflection out of the equation. How the heck did we make it from 6th Grade Civics and Sunday School to such a dismal, irresponsible and pathetic place?
Some voters who identify themselves as Republicans or Democrats have become a rabid pack of feral dogs. Informed by anxiety, xenophobia and cynicism we are abandoning ourselves, our values and … well folks, we’re Americans. Are we perched on the ruins cackling? Or are we going to pick ourselves up and start behaving in conformity to the hope our founders offered? We ought to be spending some time reflecting not on the candidates but ourselves as a people. You’re an American first, start thinking like it.

No, she had a record of firing, eliminating positions, trying to fire civil servants in Wassila, and many of these actions seemed to be political or ideological in nature. Not using the talents of talented civil servants makes for bad government. As governor, she had more power then ever before, and the legal right, so same deal.

I’d bet a dozen donuts Palin will get replaced as VP candidate “in the interest of national unity” or some such spin, because it’s the Repub MO when they “get caught”. This is a classic Repub response “The McCain campaign issued a statement that said the report “illustrates what we’ve known all along: this was a partisan led inquiry run by Obama supporters.” The statement added: “Lacking evidence to support the original Monegan allegation, the Legislative Council seriously overreached, making a tortured argument to find fault without basis in law or fact.” Scary to think such dumb justification could be used to start a war… oh wait a minute, it was – to paraphrase “those WMDs gotta be around there somewhere”. Hey all my sibling Pumas,
Here in NM, voter fraud has been huge since 2000, when in my opinion we had a coup d’état via computer technology and blatant ballot fraud. Whatever shadow power took control then is not about to relinquish that power now.
I am working the polls this time and we are now being contacted for special self protection training and voter protection strategies prior to election day.
Acorn has been rampantly active here. We have run tests on the voting machines and they are continually coming up with inaccurate info in guess who’s favor?
I was harrassed continual on my cell by the Obama campaign and feel our Governor (who shall remain nameless) in complicity with what is happening here.
New Mexico was a huge Hillary state (though that was never reflected properly in the primarys nor by the news media) and there is a great deal of worry that there will be violence. We dont really ever get national press, but I will keep you all tuned in bout this. This area is a hotbed.

Able None Yet, but I am hoping they are all investigated in their ties to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and the collapse of our economy due to the housing fiasco.

You’re grossly oversimplifying the current crises. First of all pretty much anyone who owns property has benefited from real estate inflation over the past 20 years and no politician was going to do anything to stand in the way of it. Bush bragged about how he was fostering “the ownership society”.
Second, Fannie/Freddie hold about half the mortgages in the country — all of them “standard” loans, not the riskier stuff. It’s costing taxpayers about $200b to shore them up. The other half is owned by private banks and investors, and Congress has committed $700b to help that 100% free-marketing free wheeling side.
Real estate collapsed because prices were inflated and investors left the market. The inflation could have been slowed if credit had been harder to get, but Fannie/Freddie were in control of that.

in NM, voter fraud has been huge since 2000, when in my opinion we had a coup d’état via computer technology and blatant ballot fraud.

“If Sarah Palin gets a moment in her busy, busy schedule, could she come over to our jacuzzi and answer a few questions about that embarrassing Troopergate word or whatever it is over a latte? Thank you very much in advance oh powerful and ever knowing public relations person.”

Feeble press to McCain spokesperson:

Able this is partly true also collapse because of lenient loan qualifications coming from Fannie/Freddie.Plus alot of fraud going on to get unqualified buyers into mortgages. But Dodd and Frank were supposed to be overseeing Fannie/Freddie. And I think they shuld be investigated for their ties to this industry. Did the huge donations they recd. have any influence at all in the fact that they sat back the past two years and did nothing to reign these institutions in? I am a Realtor so you don’t need to expalin to me what collapsed the Re.E. market. And as much as I know there is plenty of blame to go around for this mess I expect my Congress to prevent fraud and protect the public. Especially when they were warned about it.

“But the report is not as Gov. Palin is presenting it, in terms of ethics laws.”
Which means, if the press is actually the press and not the parrots, they’ll make her answer the question, in detail, of why she violated those ethics laws.
Otherwise, what do we need the press for?

as far as changing the outrageous and unfair bias of the media pro leftists and socialists.. we can do something about that..
we could bring the networks to their knees if millions of americans agreed to boycott those unfair news networks who stold democracy away from us..
persistent bombardment on a mass scale of the sponsors with threats of boycott of their products would light a huge bonfire under the networks asses..
this is very do-able and something americans who care can do easily..

I can’t believe how many posters simply assail Obama and apparently miss the point of this article. None of the Palin crowd can actually defend her actions, so instead they ramp up the attacks on Obama. It’s much easier to do. Instead of intelligent defense of their queen bee, they substitute rumor and innuendo hoping people are stupid enough to be sidetracked. The state legislature investigator found Palin guilty of abusing her office. Nothing anyone says about Obama changes that fact. Can you imagine this person in the office of the presidency? I can hardly wait to see how far Obama is ahead of McCain in the polls next week. We should see a huge jump in the current leader in the polls: That One. Obama in a landslide. Even Virginia is jumping the conservative ship. I’m sure we’ll hears cries of rage and disappointment from the religious fanatics. I’ll get a perverse satisfaction watching them whine and stamp their little feet. This will be pain worth seeing.

“Monegan has said he was fired in July after refusing pressure to sack Wooten, who had gone through an acrimonious divorce and custody battle with Palin’s sister.
Palin and her husband, Todd, have consistently denied any wrongdoing, describing Wooten as a “rogue trooper” who had threatened their family — allegations Branchflower discounted.
“I conclude that such claims of fear were not bona fide and were offered to provide cover for the Palins’ real motivation: to get Trooper Wooten fired for personal family reasons,” Branchflower wrote.
THIS IN NOT SOME DEMOCRAT CONSPIRACY LIKE PALIN AND McCAIN SAY…

Sarah palin is going to end up going the way of Kathering Harris. The Republican Secretary of State, who willingly looked like a dishonest moron on National Tv during the stolen 2000 election. After they got Bush into the White House The GOP treated her like a dog.
By 2006 she was so toxic they put somebody up to run against her for her Senate run.

I’ve said this before. Palin ran the state of Alaska like it was the high school student council. She appointed her buddies to jobs like Secretary of Agriculture, and she whacked anyone who didn’t wink at her the way she wanted them too. Is that bad? Maybe not for Alaska, but it would disastrous for the U.S. in this time of crisis. She will be just a heartbeat away from the oval office.

The “personal” benefit Governor Palin might have been seeking concerned her father’s personal safety.
State trooper Wooten had threatened to kill him if he hired a lawyer.
What a deal ~ ought to have every lawyer in America hopping on that one Fur Shur.
In any case, the guy who wrote up the “report” appears to think that something in a “code of ethics” supercedes the commonly held opinion of ALL MANKIND that children have a right to defend their parents against assault by a jackbooted thug.
Ergo, Governor Palin, had every right under Heaven and Earth to defend her father from the death threat uttered by Wooten.
Interesting that so many Democrats and main stream media types think that self-defense is not a right defensible over the petty claims of a code of ethics.
I pity them. I pity their loved ones.
Be warned, never turn your back on a Democrat or a MSM type. Even if one were your brother or sister they cannot be trusted. No integrity.

Sarah Palin VIOLATED THE TRUST Alaskans placed in her and BROKE THE LAW as their governor when she fired a state official who had refused to dismiss her ex-brother-in-law from his job as a state trooper, according a legislative report released Friday night.
Ten republicans and four democrats were unanimous in adopting the findings (as they were in initiating the investigation.)

McSHAME USED TO have the respect. That was 2004, when he was actually seen as someone who occasionally went against the grain.
When he started running for President, back in 2005, that all changed. He has been an ardent supporter of President Bush.
And, of course, his behavior during this campaign has totally eroded any respect from all but his base of supporters. He is no longer worthy of that respect, and has proven that he does not wear the “Country First” mantle very well anymore either.
As a Vietnam Veteran, I was extremely disappointed with his failure to support the New GI Bill, as well as his desire to see us in Iraq for 100 years and to “bomb, bomb, bomb… Iran.”
Back in 2004, I knew a number of veterans who thought putting him on Kerry’s ticket might be a good bipartisa move. I don’t believe many of them would hold the same view today!

Hey SC SUPERMAN, who cares if he is a muslim or not? Some of the nicest people I know are muslims. But even so, he is not a muslim and you are the only liar here. You lie when you say that his teachers claim he was a muslim. They have them on video being asked about him, and they didn’t say he was muslim, and he didn’t go to a muslim school. He went to a secular school that taught children of all faiths. In fact, until he became a christian he was pretty much non religious because his muslim father abandoned him when he was a small kid and he was raised by his white mother and later his white grandparents. They were not muslims either. So stop spreading lies and lets talk about the issues. Posted by: Tina | October 11, 2008, 8:11 pm 8:11 pm

Tina—he didn’t actually TASER the kid. The story is he used the TASER on the kid on the “test” setting—at the kid’s request. The little boy wanted to show his cousin BRISTOL how tough he was and that he wasn’t a “mama’s boy”. Was it bad judgement? Absolutely. But the test setting isn’t a severe thing at all. You have to keep in mind that all these accusations were made years after they occured, when the Wootens were involved in a custody battle. That’s why they didn’t stick. And as for the moose incident—-Wooten was hunting with his wife(Palin’s sister). She had the permit and he didn’t, and he shot the moose for her when she couldn’t. Again, this came forward years later during the custody battle.

The woman once again proves herself to be an abject, shameless liar. The funniest part of the report was Palin claiming that Wooten was threatening her family…at the same time that she was reducing her security detail.
Pathetic that the McCain campaign’s immediate response was to blame it on Obama, apparently heedless of the fact that the committee consisted of ten Rebublicans and four Democrats.

If Wooten threatened her father, they could have had him arrested. If it’s a lie, then they probably wouldn’t have done so. And they didn’t.
During the time of the threat, Palin DECREASED her personal security. Check it out. Would that make sense if there was a volatile situation? Not even for a dunderhead like the Gov.
