Report: Did John McCain’s Brother Make 911 Call About Traffic?

Angry because he was stuck in traffic, a man named Joe McCain — possibly the brother of the presidential candidate — placed a call earlier in the week to 911 emergency, ABC News affiliate, WJLA, reports.

The October 21 call went to the city of Alexandria, Virginia emergency operations. This is the transcript of the call:

Operator: 911 state your emergency
Caller: It’s not an emergency but do you know why on one side at the damn drawbridge of 95traffic is stopped for 15 minutes and yet traffic’s coming the other way?

Operator: Sir, are you calling 911 to complain about traffic? (pause)
Caller: "(Expletive) you." (caller hangs up)

The 911 operator, apparently, unnerved by use of the 911 emergency number to complain about bad traffic, called back the phone number that placed the call.

The operator reached a voice mail message that said, "Hi this is Joe McCain I can’t take this message now because I’m involved in a very (inaudible) important political project… I hope on Nov. 4th we have elected John."

Outraged by the operator’s action, the man called 911 a second time. That conversation went as follows:

Caller: Somebody gave me this riot act about the violation of police.
Operator: Did you just call 911 in reference to this?
Caller: Yeah.
Operator: 911 is to be used for emergencies only, not just because you’re sitting in traffic.

WJLA reports that the McCain campaign would not comment.

Who cares about his brother? John McCain is running for president not Joe, and John McCain’s lack of leadership ability, lack of new ideas, and temper is far more disturbing than a relative being an occasional jerk.

John McCain
Cindy McCain
Joe McCain
Sarah Palin
Todd Palin
All feel they are above the law beacuse of their positions. (And Todd and Joe have never been elected to anything. Must just be a Republican thing.)
These are your “reformers”?

I guess when your related to this man 911 laws doesn’t pertain to him. Maybe if the money was spent to improve the highway system something like this wouldn’t happen instead of Iraq. These people have no clue about the common everyday citizens that are working so hard that the end of the rope is almost there. You work and instead of getting a head you get further behind. God what I wouldn’t do to make 250,000 dollars for just 1 year in my life I’d be a happy camper.

John and Joe are DANGEROUSLY ANGRY. How frightening to be bullied by either one…..yesterday John mccain blasted a reporter who DARED to ask him about immigration…..
The US needs sanity and calm maturity—which Obama will bring us—– not a scurrilous bunch of angry extremists like the mccain group.

Scary, these McCain brothers seem to blow their tops pretty quick. Just imagine if John McCain’s dinner is late when he is sitting near the big red button?
Obama thinks before speaking… and he will think prior to pushing the wrong red button.
McCain needs to book the old folks home now. Maybe he can aford to pay for that gas bag brother too.

Sounds like 911 is just like the MSM…if someone says its true, it must be. No facts or research necessary. What has happened to journalism in America? I guess it died when George Soros bought it.
I guess someone calling 911 and claiming to be Joe McCain, makes it true. Just like someone claiming to be a natural-born citizen makes it so. Just like some one claiming not to have associations with radical extremists makes it so. Just like someone claiming to cut taxes for 95% of Americans makes it so.
Those that believe these claims…do America a favor and stay home on November 4th.

Gee, when the operator called back and he got joe mccain’s voicemail (I looked up this story elsewhere, and the welcome message even endorses mccain in it,) I wonder why mccain ignored that call, maybe he was busy yelling at traffic! also I just figured out why mccain keeps talking about “Joe the plumber”, he thinks that joe is his brother!

Americangirl1974 is the definition of ignorant. “Just like someone claiming to be a natural-born citizen makes it so.” — Seriously. If this were true don’t you think the FBI would have caught on to that one by now? Or are the FBI terrorists too? The entire McCain campaign is based on scare tactics and what’s really sad is that people like this believe it. “Those that believe these claims…do America a favor and stay home on November 4th.
Funny, that’s the only way McCain could win. I actually got an email the other day saying that due to record expected voter turnout that only Republicans should vote on the fourth and Democrats should vote on the fifth. That’s the Republican way, if you can’t beat them, cheat. I can’t wait until this is over so I don’t have to hear stupid everyday.

My friends… What my brother Joe was trying to get across was he was concerned about the safety of the people on the road. If there was an accident, he wanted to jump out of his car and go help. My friends, I am here today telling you this because I want total transparency in my campaign.

Posted by: John McCain | October 24, 2008, 9:57 am 9:57 am

Right Jim, we’re never supposed to believe ANYTHING that is unflattering to McCain or his campaign. But we’re supposed to believe every scurrilous, unfounded charge against Obama as true. Ridiculous. This just reinforces the impression of the McCain clan as entitled brats who think they are above the law. Like when McCain, as a Navy pilot, demanded special permission to land his plane on the airfield named for his grandfather, when he was put in a holding pattern, yelling “Let me land or I’ll take my field and go home!”
Give me an honest, self-made man over a rich entitled brat any day.
Obviously Joe McCain does not subscribe to the “country first” motto.

Posted by: Cg | October 24, 2008, 9:58 am 9:58 am

I didn’t say anything about Obama. Both sides are guilty of false advertising without question. But to honestly believe this story is true is silly. I’m not a fan of either candidate. McCain is a senile old man and Obama just plain scares me. I cant believe in the times we live that these two numb nuts are the best we could come up with.

Does anyone remember the gem of Roger clinton?

Posted by: Carol | October 24, 2008, 10:42 am 10:42 am

I agree with Jim. Both sides shade the truth and lie. I’ve see John McCain do it and Barack Obama do it. I disagree with Jim that this story is not true; I heard the 911 audio on the radio this morning.
But this election is not about John McCain’s brother (assuming it IS his brother), it’s about what we want in the next four years.
Personally, I am NOT a fan of McCain’s but I held my nose and voted for him in early voting. Obama’s plans to socialize our country flat-out scare me and, especially with our economic situation, his plans at raising corporate taxes and cutting taxes on 95% of American households (although only about 55% actually pay taxes – how does that work?) will only push us further in the wrong direction.
As for Joe, many Presidents have had a relative they’d rather not have. Jimmy Carter had Billy, Bill Clinton had Roger and Hillary, and George W. Bush had, um, well, himself…….

Posted by: Ron | October 24, 2008, 10:52 am 10:52 am

“Geevil” he may not be running but it gives inside to the temperment of the family being above the laws. This is not proper use of the 911 system and if you ar I did it we would be arrested for it so he needs to be arrested.

Posted by: Joe | October 24, 2008, 11:43 am 11:43 am

Before we go blaming Joe McCain, brother of John McCain, how about a quick voice comparison, or a check of the phone registration… First, it could be lots of Joe McCains, and second, it could be someone who put those messages on their phone then called 911 to cause a problem for McCain. I’m an Obama supporter, but let’s be reasonable, we have no proof of who this was.

Posted by: Sheila | October 24, 2008, 11:56 am 11:56 am

Seems alot of presidents have odd brothers! So whats the difference now? Alot of us have odd syblings .. big deal! Doesnt mean our views or the way we live our life mirror them! Personally, I am waiting to see that vaulted birth certificate of Obama’s and question why he won’t release important documentation that others in this campaign had no problem releasing. College records .. health records and his birth certificate. Only logical conclusion this leaves is he is hiding something from me and you “American Citizens”.
Furthermore, John McCain is not senile. If you want to sterotype McCain then you have to be willing to allow sterotype of Obama as well! Then again if “senile” is all you got .. I have to say my vote is with him! I may not agree fully with McCain but I sure do not agree with Obama! Lets all face it .. this election did not give us much of a choice however I am voting for someone that has been an American ALL his life and not just part of it with an array of “buisness croonies, friendships and acquaintances”! Someone with military experience! If you haven’t seen “Obsession” please do! You will find all 10 parts on you tube! All American’s should see this no matter what side of the fence they stand on! John McCain/Palin 08

Is this going two be two days worth of news coverage now? Can the media please stick to the issues of this election? This is getting so pathetic. They are becoming worse then the National Enquire. Is this really relevant to the Presidential election. Even if it is John McCains brother I am sure there are many more important issues to report on.

Posted by: conf1689 | October 24, 2008, 1:29 pm 1:29 pm

This is a non-issue, yes. But you’re naive to think it wouldn’t be brought up in the media. I have heard Joe McCain speak several times, and the recording (on Politico.com) most certainly sounds like him. If this were Michele Obama or Jill Biden or any of Barack or Joe’s siblings, you better believe if FoxNews or Drudge got wind of it, it would be a huge (albeit stupid) story. It’s media politics people.
And before you go ranting about the “liberal media” look no further than the Pittsburgh girl first who claimed to accosted and beaten by an attacker who wanted money, but upon seeing her Obama bumper sticker, decided he would beat her up. She has changed her story several times and there is no recoding of the incident despite the fact that she has alleged that it took place near an ATM with several bank security cameras in sight. And the “B” she claims the attacker carved into her face with a dull knife…. is backwards. As in it looked correct if one was looking into a mirror when it was etched onto her cheek. This girl is also known for accusing people (she accused a janitor at her college of tearing up her McCain signs and locking all the bathrooms) for politically motivated incidents. Her MySpace page has a reference to “the only thing better than lying is taking your clothes off.” or something along those lines.
These are stupid non-issues. Don’t be sensationalized. Don’t believe the national Inquirer journalists of the world- they are just trying to make things interesting (and make the race close).
Makes ya think….
Vote on the issues- not on Joe McCain or a silly college girl trying to use a hoax to scare voters.
PS: After a year-plus long deliberation, I am proud to say I am voting for Obama and Biden today after work- my state has early voting.

1. The Hawaii Department of Health confirmed the Certificate of Live Birth is, indeed, real.
2. His driver’s license record, marriage certificate, attorney record with the Supreme Ct. of IL, and property records all check out and verify his status as a U.S. citizen.
3. The U.S. District Court in PA threw out a claim filed by a lawyer to remove Obama from the ballot because he wasn’t a natural-born citizen. The Court called the claims “frivolous and not worthy of discussion”.
Liz, anything is possible in this world, but take a look at the people perpetuating this notion and then think twice. Conspiracy theories are the things that helped fuel McCarthyism. I thought we, as a country, were better than that.

Anyone thinging this is just a problem for Joe can check out this excerpt from his book.
(I cut-n-pasted this from a Rolling Stone article found here: http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/23316912/makebelieve_maverick/print )
“McCain recalls in Faith of My Fathers, his volcanic temper was on display. “At the smallest provocation,” he would hold his breath until he passed out: “I would go off in a mad frenzy, and then, suddenly, crash to the floor unconscious.” His parents cured him of this habit in a way only a CIA interrogator could appreciate: by dropping their blue-faced boy in a bathtub of ice-cold water.”

Wow Liz, you really do believe anything that fit’s what you want to believe. Try applying some truth-filter in the future such as considering the source. Check out the rantings of that lawyer – he’s a nut job. He actually thinks the US Govt did 911. Some people I know do wonder about that, but he treats it as gosple truth. Nut job.

Another cut-n-paste from Joe himself. Just to clarify that it’s no sham – as implied by some here. Funny how the privilaged brats of this world get all contrite when it backfires.

“I did not mean to swear at the officers themselves,” McCain said. If he were in their situation, “it would have really frosted me too and I absolutely understand their reaction.”
Joe McCain said: “I feel terrible about having hurt the campaign over this incident. I won’t be doing any more campaigning because of that.” He said he’s going to write a note of apology to the 911 operator and to the Alexandria police and he hasn’t spoken to his brother, the candidate, about the incident.

You are the one making the outrageous claims, Sam Wright, not Obama. Why in the world would anyone believe you?
