Sources Say Sarkozy Finds Obama’s Iran Policy ‘Arrogant,’ ‘Utterly Immature’

The respected Israeli newspaper Ha’artez reports that according to a "senior Israeli government source, the reports reaching Israel indicate that Sarkozy views the Democratic candidate’s stance on Iran as ‘utterly immature’ and comprised of ‘formulations empty of all content.’"

Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., met with Sarkozy in July and they are said to have discussed Iran at length.

French authorities are said to be concerned that the international community doesn’t take the Iranian threat seriously enough. French intelligence has concluded that Iran has already obtained up to 40% of the enriched uranium it needs for a bomb, the newspaper reports, and will have obtained the rest next summer.

"According to the reports reaching Israel, Sarkozy told Obama at that meeting that if the new American president elected in November changed his country’s policy toward Iran, that would be ‘very problematic,’" Ha’aretz reports. "Until now, the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany have tried to maintain a united front on Iran. But according to the senior Israeli source, Sarkozy fears that Obama might ‘arrogantly’ ignore the other members of this front and open a direct dialogue with Iran without preconditions."

The Obama campaign did not respond to a request for comment.

UPDATE: The Obama campaign passes along this comment from a spokesman for the French government: "The remarks attributed by the newspaper Haaretz to the President of the French Republic concerning Senator Obama’s positions on Iran are groundless. To the contrary, the in-depth discussions between the President of the Republic and Senator Obama on Iran during their meeting in Paris in July demonstrated a broad convergence of views on this issue. President Sarkozy and Senator Obama agree to oppose Iran’s development of a military nuclear capability."

This reads like something out of Sweet Vally High…
“Oh my God! First he was all like, Obama is sooo immature, and then I was like, OMG, and arrogant too, and then he was like, who does he think he is?”
Pitiful.

really,
We don’t need to French to have an idea of how we must manage politically. If I remember well, Sarkozy is simply trying to follow blindly the Chirac administration and doesn’t care about world’s interests.

Speaking of immature and arrogant, perhaps Sarkozy would prefer, “Bomb, bomb Bomb, Bomb, Bomb Iran.” There you have the picture of a grown up policy formulation. Sheesh…

Sounds like some conveniently made up Israeli BS to support McCain.
The French are always mad when American leaders take an initiative they didn’t think of first.
America has to treat Iran with finesse due to the Iraq situation. Surely the French haven’t thought of that.

I thought he was Obama’s new best friend at least thats the way the media made it seem when he visited, saying the man said he knew Obama would win yadda yadda yadda. Just a side note to all the people getting on the french now saying who cares what they think, if we are suppose to get care what our enemies think and sit down and talk to them why shouldnt we care what our allies think? sort of hypocritical. I am just saying.

I’m afraid Sarkozy is expressing an observation that us rationale people have stated before.
Obama (D-ACORN) must be the Rip Van Winkle of our time. Like he has slept through all the diplomatic “soft power” efforts carried out by the EU-3, the sanctions negotiations at the UN Security Council, etc. etc.
But I suspect that Obama (D-ACORN) believes he can use his silver tongue oratory, equipped with teleprompters, to work his magic.
Yes We Can (oh really?)

NO.did it stop Iran getting 40% of what it takes to make a BOMB NO. This french guy is foolisly blindly arrogant. When Iran get the rest of the 60% will they talk with them? When the French criticize American foreign policy, you know that America is on the right track.

Posted by: bible | October 28, 2008, 12:18 pm 12:18 pm

So, the point of this post is that an unnamed source CLAIMS that this is how the French President feels.
How could the Obama campaign possibly comment on that? There is nothing to comment on.
Senator Obama’s entire campaign is based on working together towards a common goal, domestically and internationally. So it would seem that these “fears” (if they even exist) are unfounded.
It is interesting how folks get all worked up about “preconditions” when the simple fact is, our Iran policy is NOT WORKING.
So, if we put our fingers in our ears and sing louder, it is going to magically begin working?
Ridiculous.
P.S. Funny how that arrogant, cocky, presumptuous thing always finds its way into the conversation about Senator Obama. Strange.
It feels almost deliberate, and yet it is completely unreflected in reality. Senator Obama has been one of the most gracious and humble candidates ever to seek the Presidency.
It is sad that basic competency has become something to ridicule.

As a Swiss citizen, I have been saying for a month now that I cannot wait until America again leads the world. Mr. Sarkozy has blamed the USA for the world’s financial problems and seem to believe that under his leadership, Europe will again rule the world. The Europeans are themselves getting tired of him and are looking forward to the time when Sarkozy, despite his high heel shoes, will have to look up to an American President again.

Posted by: Katherine Kemp | October 28, 2008, 12:19 pm 12:19 pm

And so it begins.
Clue: The French love to feel superior. They are a nation without natural borders and a very long history of being pillaged. That leads to the superiority complex.
But part of that is a tendancy to be right when making predictions. Sarkozy has to position himself as Obama’s critic to remain in power, but he also has to be right.
So now Sarkozy AND Biden are telling us Obama isn’t ready to lead, and of course, the left is now telling the French where to put it two months after lauding them for the last place it went.
As we know, the left wingers are hypocrites.

Posted by: len | October 28, 2008, 12:19 pm 12:19 pm

I guess that’s why about 5% of the French support McCain, and the rest is for Obama?

Posted by: greg | October 28, 2008, 12:19 pm 12:19 pm

Since when have Republicans started seriously considering the opinion of any country or their political leaders -especially the French.
This is ridiculous, if not absurdly funny – Colin Powell and others are not respected for their endorsement of Obama (may be hard to swallow but it’s the truth)- but, Sarkozy is now a poster boy for McCain????

Posted by: scooterfoot | October 28, 2008, 12:20 pm 12:20 pm

Ah, yes. The anonymous “senior Israeli government source” citing “reports reaching Israel”. Why not Sarkozy himself?
What percentage of enrichment is required for a weapon?
What percentage of enrichment is required for power generation?
What percentage of Iranian enrichment has the IAEA reported?
How many nuclear weapons has Israel produced at Dimona?

Posted by: no | October 28, 2008, 12:21 pm 12:21 pm

Not to mention that Israel CLEARLY has an agenda when it comes to Iran. No matter how respected this newspaper is, they are definitely not “unbiased” when it comes to Iran.

Posted by: Vanessa | October 28, 2008, 12:25 pm 12:25 pm

Sarkozy has a point about Obama, he is utterly arrogant and immature.
Todat, Obama has told everyone to take the day off of work to vote, to tell their employers that they are working for him for the day.
WHAT???
So all the teachers, Dr’s, nurses, plumbers, engineers, salesclerks, gas stations, restaurants, grocery stores, daycares,….Everything is suppose to stop for Obama for the day.
Are you kidding me??? We are electing a president to WORK FOR US!!!!
So Obama thinks the world is to stop for him.
Sounds arrogant and immature to me.
I think he really does believe he is the Messiah.
God (the real one) Help us if this man is elected.

Posted by: S Adams | October 28, 2008, 12:26 pm 12:26 pm

As much as Sarkozy wants Obama to win, I guess he is starting to panic about what will be Obama’s foreign policies. It’s no secret that most foreign governments are hoping for an Obama win including the whole U.N. Why? Because they think they will get more out of us (money) and think we will not be the superpower we are now. They all sense a weakness in Obama, that’s why they want him to win. If the french, who have no backbone of their own, are telling you to worry about Iran, I think you should worry that there is more to it, then what they’re telling you.

Posted by: Will | October 28, 2008, 12:26 pm 12:26 pm

Captain America,
Senator Obama didn’t need a teleprompter in the three debates. (Why did Senator McCain try to duck the first debate?)

There have been lots of negative news about Obama not reported, or not reported enough.
We need to know the real Obama. If we don’t elect the right president, the country will not go to right direction.

You know what’s the scariest thing about this election? If Obama wins and the House/Senate become turn 60% democrats, then 4 years from now after the democrats totally turn the country on its head, we are probably going to go full tilt, kick out the dems and go the other way and give the republicans the same power so they can totally turn the country on its head again. People around the world are pinning their hopes on Barack Obama in next month’s presidential election, according to an international survey published today. It shows that America can no longer count on the friendship even of its closest neighbours and allies after eight years of the Bush presidency. Only a minority in the countries surveyed describe relations with the US as friendly.
Julian Glover reports that a newspaper poll around the world on the US election favours Obama.
The research, carried out by eight leading newspapers including the Guardian, finds overwhelming support for the Democratic candidate. He would win by a landslide in every country surveyed, including Britain, where he is ahead of the Republican candidate John McCain by 64% to 15%.

What gives is that Sarkozy is critical of Obama’s stance on Iran. Only a biased observer would see this as a wholesale indictment of Obama by Sarkozy.
Also, while I appreciate Sarkozy’s opinion, and I hope Obama is more open to listening to the world community than George Bush was, I don’t think Sarkozy is necessarily right (or wrong). Nor will you see Democrats calling for “Freedom Fries” even if the French disagree with us. Disagreement is perfectly fine and healthy. Get it??
Can anyone tell me why Republicans think that their opinion on who would make a good President has any credibility?? They keep criticizing their characterization about what Obama will do, while never once mentioning what their Son of a Bush has ALREADY DONE to harm this country.

One of the things almost everyone agrees with, although reluctantly by the liberals, is that the Media coverage has gone overboard with their negative reporting of McCain/Palin and how Obama/Biden have gotten so many free passes. Just look what happend on a Florida TV station where Biden was asked tough questions. Obama Campaign has basically sanctioned that TV station, not for making negative or untrue statements, but for ASKING A QUESTION. The big question is, will Obama spend a TRILLION DOLLARS by the end of his campaign. Just think of what he can do with your Tax Money.

If by Change you mean, Marxism, socialist, dictatorship, then, yeah that would be change.
The word “change” doesn’t necessarily mean good.
Also, according to Obama, the low income people, which according to him makes up 95% of the population, do not have access to healthcare benefits. If everyone had a union, as you say, then wouldn’t they have healthcare and vacation pay? Then we wouldn’t need a socialist universal healthcare system and a “spread the wealth” plan.

You’re not one for details are you?
I didn’t say EVERYONE had a union, I said YOU need to find a shop with a union, since clearly YOU don’t.
P.S. All those “isms” you listed? They aren’t any scarier than a lying President who takes my money in the front door and gives it to Haliburton and oil companies out the back.
P.S.S. Our healthcare system is not working and a $5000 tax credit is not gonna fix it. Do you have any ideas, or are you just scared of everything?

Well Nashville, I work for myself… what about all of those “bitter, americans clinging to their guns and religion” that Obama is targeting, who don’t have the benefit of a union? Lack of education, availability of unions in their state, etc.
If you want to talk about liars in Washington, look to your own party of Dems who refused to see the collapse of Fannie Mae because they were too busy counting their money they received from them.
Universal Health care is not the answer, especially with our population of 300 million. Other socialist countries who have it, so not like the poor healthcare they recieve but have no other choice. They countries can barely afford the health care system and they have population of 60 mill.
Obama’s healthcare plan will hurt small businesses because they will be forced to buy into Obama’s plan. Business owners will have to cut staff, benefits, etc just to pay for the healthcare plan. Low income wage earners will suffer the most.
Do you have any ideas of your own or are you just aping Obama’s talking points. Can any of you Obamabots proof that Obama can accomplish what he says, because he has no record to back up what he say. He tells you lemmings what you want to hear to get elected.
Obviously, you do not understand socialism or you would be repulsed by it.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
S. Adams:
I read your entire post, and I did not see ONE idea. Not one.
You need some independent sources of information, because Senator Obama exempts small business from the requirement to provide health care to their employees AND he provides a 50% tax credit to those who WANT to provide health insurance to their employees. This is a FACT. Check it out.
Senator Obama is providing access to affordable healthcare, NOT universal healthcare. Once again, this is a FACT.
I agree with you that their are PLENTY of liars in both political parties, but that does not absolve President Bush of his actions. His lies have cost us many precious lives.
You mention Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, but conveniently leave out the fact that virtually EVERY BANK is in need of federal money to survive. How did we get in this position? Not Fannie Mae, but a LACK OF OVERSIGHT – also known as DEREGULATION. When you let the foxes guard the henhouse, you get alot of DEAD CHICKENS! :)
In regards to “socialism” – why is it socialism when it helps the folks at the bottom, and a “rescue package” when it helps the folks at the top?
Why is it okay to help foreign countries, but not our own citizens? We are all GEORGIANS, John McCain says.
We are all screwed if he is elected President.
P.S. You asked: “Can any of you Obamabots proof that Obama can accomplish what he says, because he has no record to back up what he say.”
I cannot see into the future. But I do know that if we keep doing what we have always done, we will will get the same results. That is the very definition of insanity.

RADNOR, PA. — More than 75,000 Jews throughout the Keystone state got an email Thursday from the “Republican Federal Committee of PA – Victory 2008” that compares a victory by Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., to Nazi victories before the Holocaust.
It’s pretty obvious they’ll do anything to try to win. Might that not include planting stories in the Israeli media?

Notice this update to the story posted above:
UPDATE: The Obama campaign passes along this comment from a spokesman for the French government: “The remarks attributed by the newspaper Haaretz to the President of the French Republic concerning Senator Obama’s positions on Iran are groundless. To the contrary, the in-depth discussions between the President of the Republic and Senator Obama on Iran during their meeting in Paris in July demonstrated a broad convergence of views on this issue. President Sarkozy and Senator Obama agree to oppose Iran’s development of a military nuclear capability.”
Sounds like much ado about nothing, no?

Hello to all Americans, my name is Gabriel and I live in Honduras, Central America. An Obama Presidency for me is very scary.
Ever since FDR every US President except Jimmy Carter has had a Super-Power Mentality about the role that the United States needs to play in the world. Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama believe that the USA should be an Equal-Power not a Supe-Power in their relations with other countries. In a debate with Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama said that the problem with the Unietd States, is that the USA thinks they are above everyone else, and that the United States sgould be at the same level with everyone else.
I have to Strongly disagree with that Statement. The President of the United States, the Leader of the Free World, is not at the same level as corrupt, narco dictators such as Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez.
The United States of America is a symbol of freedom and liberty throughout the world, and if the President of the United States meets with dictators such as Chavez without any preconditions, then that kills any HOPE that I have that it is going to be different here in Latin America. That one day we will be able to live in a democracy that works and where we are free to express our opinions about our leaders and our leaders without punishment or reprimand.
Hugo Chavez is trying to destroy the democracy which has been so difficult for us to mantain, and in which many people gave up their lives for the freedom that we are still trying to achieve, one of these people was grandfather.
If the President of the United States, meets with these dictators, then he legitimizes that everything that they are doing and everything that they have done, is justified in the eyes of the international community.
Since I have no say, I beg the people of the United States not to vote for Barack Obama. He will make that great country of yours, that country that represents hope and freedom throughout the world, the greatest country in the world, he would make it weak and equal to countries such as Iran, Venezuela and North Korea. Please do not kill the only hope that I have in my country’s struggling democracy. Hugo Chavez is spending millions of dollars trying to cause a civil war here in Central America, and for our countries to go to the left and become communist. I beg you, do not let Hugo Chavez win this fight. Let democracy and liberty prevail.
Thank you very much for your time…

Gabriel, thank you for your comment.
Barack Obama is exactly who we don’t need conducting foreign policy for the reasons you mention and for other reasons as well.
His own VP running mate, Joe Biden, warned us a few days ago that if Obama is elected, there will be a “generated” crisis to test his mettle and that his response would defy conventional wisdom. Biden then asked Obama’s supporters to stick with him during this time to help other Americans understand and support US policy.
It’s chilling, especially when you understand that John McCain will not be tested in the same way by world leaders because they ALREADY KNOW his response would not serve their interests.

Sarkozy understands what the vast majority of Europeans do not understand, and that is the threat Iran poses to world stability.
Iran is a serious threat. Just ask the Israelis. The Israeli people understand very well Iran’s intentions, and they support John McCain over Barack Obama.

Ha’aretz: right-wing Israeli newspaper. Doesn’t like Obama one bit, because Obama looks at both sides of an argument, not just the Israeli side.

iraq was the right choice, the pretext was the wrong choice. but you can blame the UN for that. did hussein have a reactor in 1981? yes. the israelis bombed it. did hussein chemically erase the whole town of halabja? yes. was he in violation of more than 15 UN sanctions before any action was taken? yes. was he circumventing the oil for food and medicine program with the help of kofi annans son and redistributing it to his military and weapons programs? yes. The point is, europe is weak, totally left, never wants to foot it’s own bill…russia is vying for it’s own hegemony and resurgance under kgb ex’s…china needs irans oil…etc…and so the UN would never have passed a resolution to go into iraq despite all of these known violations..and so the bush team developed the silly pretext knowing it to be false so that despite the toothless UN, they would at least do the right thing even if some other countries didn’t have the will or the guts. To the democrats great shame, they all decided to swing to the hard left for political expediency rather than do what was right for the bloody country and world. I call that treasonous.

In response to Gabriel’s post:
I agree with you. My family came here (escaped) from Poland in 1940 (those who’ve actually cracked a history book will understand the relevance of that timeline). It frightens and sickens me that a whole new generation of American voters don’t recognize the voice of socialism when they hear it. What’s more disturbing is that the older generation that SHOULD know better isn’t paying attention. They think they’re voting for a democrat. McCain is the Democrat in this race, not Obama. He is farther left than a real, America loving democrat ever could be. Your liberties will disappear so fast you won’t see it happening because it’ll all be “for your own good”..it’s ALWAYS for your own good. No tyrannical dictator ever took office by threatening people. It was always for good, happy, economical reasons. None of which ever came to pass. Please America, you’ve been a beacon of hope for a troubled world, for people who’ve risked their lives and others who lost their lives trying to make it to these sacred shores. You are the world’s last best hope and with Obama….your light of liberty will die as will our hopes.

The Iranians have shown that they are not afraid of anyone. What they lack in weapons, they offset with willpower. As for the West, well, never underestimate the power of denial.
