The Khalidi Gambit, Part II: The IRI Confirms, Tries to Distance Self, from Khalidi

“Now, interesting what we are finding out in the last couple days about this assortment of friends from Chicago…that Barack Obama has,” Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin said today at a rally at Bowling Green University, per ABC News’ Imtiyaz Delawala. “It seems that there is yet another radical professor from the neighborhood who spent a lot of time with Barack Obama going back several years. This is important because his associate, Rashid Khalidi, he in addition to being a political ally of Barack Obama, he’s a former spokesperson for the Palestinian Liberation Organization.”

An uncomfortable glitch in this attack: Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., chairs an organization that gave hundreds of thousands of dollars to a group Khalidi founded and for which he served on the board (more on that HERE).

The IRI has now issued a statement, confirming that it gave money to Khalidi’s group (though IRI officials are going through their records trying to determine how much, exactly) and also trying to distance the organization from Khalidi himself.

“Questions have arisen regarding the International Republican Institute’s (IRI) work with Palestinians in the 1990s," a statement from the group reads. "In the 1990s, IRI gave grants to the Center for Palestinian Research and Studies (CPRS) for polling in the West Bank/Gaza. The polls measured support for the peace process, for various Palestinian political groups, and for efforts to enhance governance in the West Bank/Gaza. At that time no other organization could credibly conduct polling in the West Bank/Gaza.

“We understand that Rashid Khalidi was one of the many founders of CPRS, and we understand that he was for some (unclear) amount of time a board member. IRI did not in the 1990s conduct background checks of grantees’ founders or board members. IRI did on a number of occasions vet CPRS as an organization, including, as was our custom, with the Israeli government, and we were given no cause for concern. We do not recall any contact between Mr. Khalidi and IRI, and there is no evidence that Mr. Khalidi benefited (sic) in any way from IRI’s grants.

“Other organizations that reportedly gave funding to CPRS include the National Endowment for Democracy, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Center for International Private Enterprise, the Ford and Rockefeller Foundations, the Japanese Embassy, and Germany’s Friedrich Naumann Stiftung. IRI’s relationship with CPRS ended in 2000, and we understand that it no longer exists.”

The issue here is that when Khalidi left Chicago, Barack Obama hosted a tribute dinner for Khalidi, at which dinner various speakers railed against Israel in Obama’s presence.
The LA Times has the video tape, and should either press the source for permission to release the tape or should at least flesh out what happened at the diner with a print story.
Did Obama clap, frown, laugh, nod, or disapprove of these anti-Semitic rants at the Khalidi dinner from the dais?
Obama claims to be a friend to Israel, and this issue could not be more relevant to what Obama says vs who he really is.
This is not about assoications, but rather Obama’s tolerance (or lack of tolerance) for anti-Semitism.

Thanks for having the guts to cover this. I don’t think it’s going to make your readers happy.
And Steven – I’m sorry – but I’ve talked directly to the reporter who did the original piece for the Times. He was a decent guy, but his sources were the dregs of the earth. I think there’s a good reason why the Times hasn’t released anything. They are not pro-Obama.
Even if you look at this issue from a cold political view – what does Obama have to gain from harming Israel? And you’re worried about anti-Semites? Do you knw anything about Andy Martin or Rev Hagee, McCain’s spiritual advisor?

Stephen,
Real question is: What happened to the money John McCain gave to Khalidi? And what was the true extent of their relationship?

HAS SARAH PALIN been tested for rabies yet?
Now that the congress has passed mental health parity legislation, I am hoping she can get some help with her radical personality disorder.
Seriously folks, is it acceptable that we demonize Rashid Khalidi or any other Arab who Barack Obama happens to be friends with?
Khalidi is a MODERATE Palestinian, one who favors a negotiated settlement with Israel and CONDEMNS suicide bombs as war crimes!
ALSO, John McCain has an important relationship with Khalidi. He chaired a board that funneled about a million dollars to Khalidi’s moderate organization.

Obama – Khalidi – 1 degree of separation (family dinners, personal and professional praise)
Obama – Khalidi – 2 degree of separation thrice (children in same school, teach same college, etc and $$ Woods Funds to Mrs Khalidi)
Obama – Ayers – Khalidi
VERSUS
McCain – IRI – CPRI – Khalidi
3 degrees ONLY – no personal contact. I bet you anything noone associated to McCain or the Republican Institute went to any parties celebrating ALL that Khalidi was up to. What do you think McCain would do if he was there and the ANTI SEMITIC sickness started!!!!!!!???

Thank you for reporting both sides of this silly issue. If it had to be raised by the Republicans/McCain campaign, the full facts should at least be reported. CNN has a headline piece on their website with NO MENTION of McCain’s ties to this man.

Posted by: renegademom | October 29, 2008, 6:15 pm 6:15 pm

Dear T. Ates:
The Obama’s dined with Mr. and Mrs. Khalidi every week before they left Chicago. McCain was associated with a foundation that give a cause that Khalidi was assiciated with money.
These relationships are not the issue.
If the LA Times had a tape of a dinner hosted by McCain where speakers uttered anti-Semetic remarks, that would be relevant to McCain’s tolerance for extreme views.
Obama did host such a dinner.
Tt was not Khalidi who railed against the Jews at the dinner, it was other speakers. And wit all due respect, Obama’s reaction to those remarks, as caputured on the video is quite relevant.

This slander of Rashid Khalidi follows the McCain/Palin slander where they claim that Barack Obama is a ‘socialist’.
DOES EVEN ONE McCain supporter have the balls to answer this simple question:
Is John McCain today willing to publicly call for the end of all redistributionist government programs, including the following:
A) Social Security
B) Medicare
C) Unemployment insurance
D) All federal funds going to Alaska, the state that ranks NUMBER ONE among all the states in federal pork per citizen.
FOLLOW UP QUESTION:
Is John McCain a Socialist, by his own definition???

Third story on this!!!!!!!!!???
It seems to me that timing on the CPRS grant by IRI and other and the vetting /involvement of “moderates” like Khalidi may be critical. Mid 90s was a time that Clinton and mainstream foundations were working on a Palestinian Israel settlement.
Other organizations that reportedly gave funding to CPRS include the National Endowment for Democracy, the U.S.
ENDED IN 2000 is key. That’s when the Clinton Peace Plan fell apart, Thats the Second Intifada. Thats Yassir last stand until he handed over Mahmoud Abbas. All Fatah hands on deck – and “moderates” suddenly changed their tunes to fit in and well, that they and their family would keep their heads and limbs all together…….
NOW 2003 (not old news and 1 year before Obama entering US Senate!!), we have a “farewell” party of a radical professor going to another university to spread his nonsense and anti semitism was in the air. I ask again, would McCain have sat there and ate his mashed potatoes. I dont think so!!!

Khalidi is a MODERATE Palestinian, one who favors a negotiated settlement with Israel and CONDEMNS suicide bombs as war crimes!

They should hide their faces in shame.

and more……..
In 1995 Rashid and Mona Khalidi co-founded the The Arab-American Action Network, a virulently anti-Israel organization that strongly supports the Palestinian Arab terrorist movement. It regards the creation of the state of Israel as a “naqba” (“catastrophe” in Arabic). Mona Khalidi served as the group’s President from its inception until some time this year, although she is now listed only as a member of its board of directors.
Obama’s assistance to the Khalidis, however, went beyond mere kind words at a farewell party. In 2001 and again in 2002, Obama, in his capacity as a member of the board of directors of the Leftist non-profit organization the Woods Fund, voted to give the Arab-American Action Network co-founded by Rashid and Mona, and directed by Mona Khalidi, $75,000 in grants.

Common tactics from McCain and Company:
Falling behind in her reelection race, Sen. Elizabeth Dole has uncorked one hell of a charge: The Democrat running against me is godless.
The end of the ad features a picture of candidate Kay Hagan with a female voice yelling “there is no God!” — the clear implication is that the voice is Hagan’s. In fact, the Democratic candidate is a Sunday School teacher and an elder at her Presbyterian church.

The LA TImes admits to having a tape, with Obama at this dinner, as is Bill Ayres.
Ayres, and Khalidi are both known to be anti Israel. Obama has chosen staff members, and cabinet possibilities, of which most are anti Israel.
Yet we get the lable of kkk, and racist.
Connect the dots, if you want. You refuse to, because that $500 rebate is oh so tempting.

DO YOU KNOW what gives away the weakness of John McCain’s ‘protect the wealthy’ economic policy?
If McCain thought his arguments (tax cuts for the wealthy, trickle down economics, etc) were any good, he would stick with them the way Obama keeps turning the conversation back to the need to give the middle class a break.
Instead we see him (or Sarah “can’t name a supreme court decision” Palin) throwing character assassination bombs every day.
Not the actions of a confident man.

You haven’t heard much about Sarah Palin’s failures as a mayor or governor. You know why? Because that would take Obama off of the topic of the economy.
The question is WHY IS JOHN MCCAIN SO INSECURE ABOUT HIS OWN ECONOMIC POLICY that he wants to talk about something, anything, else?

Hey fellow Americans, aren’t you concerned about AMERICAN interest? You know, this unwavering, unconditional support of Israel is not particularly always good for this country! When did Israel’s interests become interchangeable with America’s? There are plenty of Israelis who feel the same.

Your precious McCain may not have attended the dinner but he helped to fund the organization this guys was a member of. Does that not count for anything?
Everyone has been associated with someone or some organization that have since cut ties with, why is it that the only ones that continue to draw fire are Sen. Obama’s?

Posted by: theirmom3kids | October 29, 2008, 6:58 pm 6:58 pm

My question is simply this:
Why was it OK for the media to release the tapes of Reverend Wright bashing white people and blaming them for the tragedy of 9/11??
We know Obama sat in his church for 20 years.
Why was it OK for the American people to see Father Pfleger stand up there and mock and insult a sitting U.S. Senator, and her husband, the former U.S. President??
We know Obama knew this man for 20 years, funneled grants to his church, and called him a “moral compass.”
If the media had no problem with hearing white America being trashed, what’s the problem with us hearing whatever was said at the Khalidi dinner regarding Israel?
Is it like baseball?? Three strikes and you’re out??

He spend months and many, many contacts trying to get Hagee’s endorsement.
THIS IS THE GAME OF ASSOCIATIONS?
Do you like it?
Then you should look up John McCain’s relationship with terrorist G. Gorden Liddy.
In fact there is a list of dozens of John McCain’s and Sarah Palin’s associations.
You don’t here about them because Obama is more interested in concentrating on the welfare of the middle class than character assassination.
You don’t hear about McCain and Palin’s associations because Obama has honor and character. John McCain, not any more.

Sen. Obama has made his stand on Israel very clear. I suggest you try to focus your energy on arguing policy differences between the candidates…or do you not have any favourable arguments to make on behalf of your candidate??
Both canddaites love their country and are patriotic…they just have differing views on the issues. So stick to the issues Zeke…not these mindless attacks!

Dee,
Let’s see the unedited tape. Obama’s own words will tell the story. How can you defend what you haven’t seen?

Posted by: zeke | October 29, 2008, 7:11 pm 7:11 pm

I’d like to ask the Obama supporters: Do you know now what the issues are and what Obama’s going to do for you? If so, you should have your minds made up, right? Then why the problem of any negative information, that by the way could be of grave importance to all of us? What are you afraid of? No matter if it’s about Obama or McCain. What makes you not want to know?

McCain is a hypocrite. He gave $450,000 to this same Khalid when he was the chairman of an organization. McCain has no honour.

Posted by: krista | October 29, 2008, 7:12 pm 7:12 pm

Why is it that the Republicans choose to tar Obama with associations that are shared by members of their own party? In 2006, Condoleezza Rice was keynote speaker for Khalidi’s organization, the American Task Force on Palestine. She compared Palestinians to our founding fathers and likened their movement to that of the civil rights movement. Joseph Farah of World Net Daily wrote of Rice, “She has deliberately chosen to side with evil – the kind of people with whom we are supposed to be at war. It means that her boss, President Bush, is committed to this evil path as well.”
I condemn neither Obama nor Rice for their associations with Khalidi. I don’t condemn McCain for chairing an organization that provided money to one of Khalidi’s organizations. Khalidi advocates a peaceful, two state (Palestinian and Israeli) solution to the conflict in the Middle East. I do, however, condemn the simplistic thinking of people like Joseph Farah who reject nuance and divide the world into good and evil. Bush isn’t evil; neither is Obama. We all have people with whom we associate that would cause others to object. If McCain’s criticism of Obama’s associates is typical Washington DC behavior, no wonder Congress can’t get anything done. They’re too busy playing gotcha. To all the politicans out there, I don’t care who you know. I care what you know and what you’re going to do.

I honestly didnt know the driving event from 50 years ago. I’m all for finding the truth on that as well. We need to know who will be running the country, on both sides.

To the ABC All Barrack Company, the spin you put on everything to favor Barrack is disgusting. He, who allows his own brother to live in poverty without helping him at all, promises handouts and prosperity to ‘millions of Americans’. He who relies only on pointing the finger at Bush, will make our world safe and secure: He, who couldn’t even see that Rev. Jeremiah Wright, preached a hate doctrine, will himself bring peace to the world. Well, I for one am able to see through the smokescreen. As a Michigander, I know how the Democrats operate, Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is guilty of felony and in prison: Governor Jennifer Granholm has been ineffectual and our state suffers one of highest unemployment rates, GM may go under, and folks blame all this on Bush and the Republicans. Wake up, America, we need a leader we can trust and whose word matches his actions. Not Barrack Obama./

McCain donated $450,000 in grant to Khalid when he was chairman of this same organization. McCain is a hypocrite and has no self respect.

More race-baiting from the McCain campaign. It’s ok for the republicans to associate with a guy they are *now repulsed by, but not the black guy. Strange values held by those “conservative Christian” right-wing folk. You betcha!

Obama is all big money donations. It’s not the $20-$50 dollar donations that funded him. 85% of his campaign was funded by very large donations. Much higher individual amounts than the average in previous campaigns. Don’t think he doesn’t owe these fat cats some big favors.

If you were at a farewell dinner for a co-worker…and the “theme” of many of the speeches were talking trash about abortion doctors and abortion clinics…would you stay for the entire dinner? Or pick any other topic that you find fundamentally disagreeable.
The LA Times article clearly states that there was strong anti-Israeli sentiment expressed. There was another similar dinner in 2005.
The conflict in the Middle East is one of the most pressing foreign affairs issues we face at present–it affects not only national security, but our current energy crisis as well. It is important to know that Obama can maintain some sense of impartiality on these matters.
This tape is out there. If it has negative information on it–get it out now–before the election. Don’t let it become something that weakens his hand at the negotiating table later. The stakes are too high.
Besides, all of you Obama supporters think this thing is already in the bag. What’s the big deal? :)

The worse president(s) in our history were FDR for the Raw Deal. It was WWII that brought an end to the depression.
If you had heard his fireside chats he referred to a second bill of rights. My parents and grandparents lived throught the depression and this is in no way close. Unemployment was 30%. If you knew your history, you would know that Joseph P. Kennedy was a big part of the problem, since he was someone who saw it coming, said nothing and sold short. The Kennedy kids never knew that there was a depression. Kennedy got us into a mess with the Soviet Union. It was luck that we did not have WWIII. Fortunately the soviets did not have the trigger mechanism to launch the radioactive missiles. Plus under the new Pres. who Biden likens Obama to we had the Bay of Pigs fiasco, and Kennedy’s attempt at and assasination of Fidel Castro. Johnson who escalated the war in Viet Nam to: LBJ, LBJ, have many kids have you killed today? His Great Society is and was a disaster, since the poor are still with us. Then the feckless Jimmie Carter and the kidnapping for 444 days of 52 Americans. Plus the beginning of the housing mess with the CRA. Then Clinto with forcing banks to give loans to people who could not afford them. The first World Trade Center bombing he treated as a simple crime, bombing an aspirin factory, Blackhawk down in Mogadishu, Khobar towers, ignore Rwanda/Burundi violence, had a chance to get Bin Laden, ignored it. Barney Frank’s boyfriend had an important position with Fannie Mae from approx. 1991-1999(2000?). The Dems got a lot of money from this, their personal piggy bank.
George Bush defeats Al Gore, who was trying to steal the election. President Bush was dissed by the Dems for 1 attempts to rein in Fannie Mae. Sen. Obama received the second largest amount of money from Fannie Mae. Chris Dodd received the second largest amount.
Watch the CSPAN video from 2004.

Johnny Mathis and Denice Williams did a song that sums up the McCain campaign. And McCain’s old enough to remember it came out on VINYL.

Boy, why did that one get cut? Are readers not supposed to know that the LA Times is owned by Sam Zell and he is a MAJOR donor to Israeli causes? What’s the harm in that. If Zell thought Obama was anti-Israel, that tape and its contents would have been all over the Times and Tribune months ago.
And where were you big Israeli supporters last week when Andy Martin, the biggest and most vocal anti-semite I’ve ever heard was whining about birth certificates all over the news? As I recall, you were frothing at the mouth. This has nothing to do with being pro-Israeli or anti-semitic – it’s just more witch hunting out of desperation. Maybe you can call in Sarh Palin’s guest preacher – he seemed like he made a career out of witchhunting. And she tood there and let him annoint her. EEEW.

The irony is that Hamas owes much of it’s power to Bush and the republicans.
The republicans and Bush were advocates of elections being held in Palestine. What they didn’t realized was that the PLO was corrupt as hell, as result many people voted for Hamas.
So this smear and fear tactic is falling on its face and now they are trying to distance them from Khalidi.
Give me break…

Michelle, The LA Times article is based on an ultra right wing blog – a bottom-feeder blog. I spoke with the author when it was written. The individual who wrote the blog is so twisted that they claimed that Jill Carroll – a neutral American journalist who was held as a hostage in Iraq for months – hated America and loved Arabs. The individual who runs this blog made this statement with virtually no collaborating evidence (stories, quotes, actions). SHe just thought it might be provocative. The statement on the blog was made on the day this terrified woman was released – after she had been thought to be dead.
I’d like to think a real journalist wouldn’t do that. Unfortunately, it’s the way some journalists get their stories today. From botttom feeders. With virtually no evidence.

I am concerned about Obama s
experience and his plans. When you
add up all he has promised, you find
it is not possible without at least
increasing taxes at least 1/2 more than
you are presently paying 25% plan on
37.%.if you are paying 40 plan on paying
60%.
I would love to have health insurance
like congress as Obama said, but anyone
that knows how to add, knows that
is an impossible dream…I am concerned
that most of the people backing
Obama and his plans are young and
college educated…but have accepted
all his plans as fact without checking
on the facts. Obama is not GOD…
even though there are a few million
people that are acting like it.
He is a well spoken person, able to
deliver a message and move a crowd..
check on history…who were some
of the people in the past that moved to
fame quickly like Obama.?
This is not about Republicans or
Democrats…this is about being free
next year…about having enought extra
money to buy a soda..or let the kids
go to a movie…
This is serious stuff…not just about
political parties….
If Obama is as great as he is trying
to make you all believe, then he will
stay on the political scence and
be elected president in 2012. This
man is unproven, no background, has
never run a company, or a state. He has
been running for president for 20 months
So his time in the Senate is only about
1 1/2 years….Why care about his
church, or Ayers, His friend that is
still not cleared of taking millions
from Fannie (or Freddie..not sure
which)..The person that helped him
get his house..that is on his way to
prision, BECAUSE..THERE ARE SO MANY.BAD PEOPLE…and now he has said
he wants to help people that have
less money to have more..HELP THE
MIDDLE CLASS.
If you make 40,000 a year, is it o k
with you to have your taxes go up 4000
to donate to someone else that only
makes 18 thousand….that would
be more fair….then you would have
36000 and he would have 22000…thats
a lot better…(never mind the fact.
that he gets 18000 a year, because
he chooses to work part of the time)
now you are helping to spread the
wealth.)OBAMA will TAKE FROM YOU NOT
JUST from the people making 3 or 4
Hundred Thousand a year….
…There are not enough people
making big $$ to even our society out.
so YOU will have to pay your fair share.
If you are an American making 300,000
plus a year, you have the means to
leave America…and thats what a lot
of rich or richer people will do…
There are places in the world, that
you do not have to SHARE THE WEALTH..
An Obama America is one where every
one is more equal..the drug user will
not be screened to see if he is still
on drugs..he will get a check…provided
for him with YOUR MONEY….
Forget NEW CARS,,,,A NICER HOME….IF
THIS IS THE AMERICA YOU WANT TO LIVE IN
VOTE FOR OBAMA.
YOU ALL WANT CORPORATIONS TO PAY MORE
TAXES. CORPORATIONS ARE MOVING TO
IRELAND NOW…BECAUSE THEY HAVE A LOW
TAX RATE…in this global economy,
they can do that…IF YOU HAVE THE
CHOICE OF WORKING AT TWO DIFFERENT
PLACES AND ONE PLACE YOU WILL BENEFIT
A LOT MORE…WHICH ONE WOULD YOU CHOOSE?
THINK ABOUT IT…ITS NOT WHICH ONE
CAN CALL THE OTHER ONE THE MOST
CUTE NAMES…BETWEEN THE DEM S & REP S
THIS IS YOUR FUTURE…WHERE WILL YOU
BE IN 2010? PLEASE DO NOT TRUST YOUR
FUTURE TO AN UNKNOWN..

To Common Sense /Oct 29, 2008 8:56:50
MLK holiday was not necessary, just like it was not necessary to proclaim Cesar Chavez holiday in California. Remember that John McCain was in Vietnam when MLK was marching for civil rights in the sixties. Give McCain a break.
When I was stationed overseas from 1987-1990, I did not know what was going on the U.S. because whatever news we in the military heard about U.S. was limited, and I was not in solitary confinement, or being tortured like McCain. So I can’t really relate to the events that occurred in the U.S. during those three years.
Anyway, you weren’t even going to vote for McCain. To all minority ethnic groups, you need to stop victimizing yourselves, and I’m speaking as Hispanic female. You can’t blame society or our government for our shortcomings. On the contrary, we shoud be grateful that we live in the greatest country of the world. Be proud and get an education. We always have the choice that if we don’t like it here, we can leave to where ever our ancestors came from. I wouldn’t trade our great nation for the world!
Even the poorest of the poor people in U.S. live better than the poor in other countries.
Hispanic female for McCain/Palin.

Wow, secret tapes not being released but reported all over Fox News. Reminds me of the “Michelle Obama Whitey Tape” that got so much Fox press a few months ago. No one has been able to find that one, either.
If there was such a tape, there would be more than one copy and someone would be releasing it. I’ve never heard anyone from the Times say that there even is a tape, so let’s start there.
And, yes I do know the issues and exactly what Barack is going to do for my country. Yes, I will pay slightly higher taxes under his administration, but 95% of the country won’t. Since I love my country and put country first, going back to the tax rates that existed the last time that this country was in decent shape doesn’t bother me. I just want the country to be a decent place to live again, and that is why I support Barack Obama for President.

McCain has abandoned his character in this election. What’s going on in the GOP world when even Elizabeth Dole lets herself be lowered into the gutter. Utterly shameful. I thought it was both comic and telling that Obama never once mentioned John McCain’s name in last night’s commercial. The man has class. John McCain once had class, but no longer.

From the Jewish Telegraph:
“The attacks from McCain and Palin came as a relationship between Khalidi and the Republican presidential nominee was revealed. The International Republican Institute, an organization McCain has chaired since 1993, provided funds to the Center for Palestine Research and Studies, an organziation co-founded by Khalidi, during the 1990s — including $448,873 in 1998 for the organization to conduct surveys of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.”
McCain’s own relationship with Khalidi goes back to 1993 and involves McCain’s own organization funding him to the tune of nearly half a million dollars!
Any news organization that does not mention this, first and foremost, as the lead in to this allegation should not be in the business.
