The Note: Expectations Low — Can Palin Soar?

ABC News’ Rick Klein reports in Thursday’s Note:

ST. LOUIS — Maybe Sarah Barracuda knows her head fakes.

Might the stumbling, halting performances have been the best thing that could have happened to Gov. Sarah Palin?

Surely she can clear the bar Tina Fey set for her. Certainly she’s been studying up on issues that move beyond Alaska’s proximity to Russia. Naturally she’ll find a way to ease in some zingers that she knows better than most will be the soundbites people remember. (And if all else fails — blame the refs.)

It’s a face-off of a peculiar sort on tap for 8 pm CT (9 pm ET) Thursday: Palin and Sen. Joe Biden will be measured on their interactions with each other, but mostly they’ll be measured against themselves. And, sorry, Joe, most of the public is tuning in to see only one of the two candidates on stage at Washington University in St. Louis.

This is the Palin-Biden debate — though really it will be Palin’s night, the single biggest opportunity for the nation to see its celebrity candidate doing something close to approximating the work she’d be presumed to have to do should she win.

Read the rest of The Note — and get all the latest on the 2008 election, Congress, the White House and the wide world of politics every day — from Rick Klein by bookmarking this link.

And with a fresh round of national and state-level polls showing some Obama separation — and some Palin drag — there may be no better chance for the McCain-Palin ticket to jump back into the ballgame.

(What does it say about the McCain-Palin team’s confidence that the conservative noise machine was trying to drown out the moderator before a question has been asked? And when will Team McCain get introduced to the Google?)

This is star power, fading:

“Skepticism about Sarah Palin has soared since she entered the national political stage, with six in 10 Americans now doubting her qualifications for office and fewer than half convinced of her grasp of complex issues,” ABC polling director Gary Langer writes of the new ABC News/Washington Post numbers.

“In advance of her debate against Joe Biden tonight, Palin now looks more like a drag than a boost to the GOP ticket: Thirty-two percent of registered voters say her selection makes them less likely to support John McCain for president, up from 19 percent last month,” Langer writes. “Just 35 percent say Palin has the experience it takes to serve effectively as president, down a dozen points since early September; 60 percent think not, up 15.”

Palin can soar if she will actually answer the question with some depth and consideration. The American people do not know her and what little we have seen is frightening. The McCain camp keeping her from the press makes it look as if she has something to hide. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has given more press conferences to American reporters than Palin has.

Sarah Palin needs to understand that she is nothing more than a empty headed political pawn meant to grab the Clinton votes. She has no substance or qualifications to be the next vp of the USA. Go home Sarah!!!! I feel nothing but pity for her…she should have said “Thanks but no thanks” and saved herself some humiliation. Again, go home Sarah!!

I wonder if the repubs will leak out the ad that says palin “won the debate” before the debate happens like they did with mccain last week…

Jen,
no need to sound so angry. Jen if your so confident in the candidate Obama that was sold to you by the media than don’t act so angry. I don’t care for Obama or McCain. I think they are both inept to be commander in chief but Obama will win the Whitehouse – hopefully for the sake of our country we will not have to eat crow if he falls flat on his face. Good luck.

This is scary….but I remember the 1992 VP debate between Gore-Quayle-Stockdale. Gore was more knowledgeable and beat Quayle on issues. However, Gore and Quayle got into bickering leaving Stockdale left out. Viewers declared Stockdale the winner even though he clearly did not have a firm grasp of issues. The lesson is….Viewers are going to be pre-disposed to giving Palin the benefit of the doubt. Biden just needs to provide concise, direct, answers and not be drawn into petty arguments that Palin surely will try to start. Palin is on the spot to show she is knowledgeable Biden does not. He just needs to show he is above partisanship. By the way, he could also point out to Palin John McCain’s positions over the last 27 years. The fact is, Biden knows McCain a lot better than Palin. I don’t think this should be lost in the debate. It will point out that McCain surely selected Palin in haste for political expediency.

Jen – you feel pity for Sarah! What have you accomplished in life. I think she is a very accomplished person. I don’t think she needs or wants your pity. If she were to look at your life – she would probably pity you.

Obama wasn’t “sold”
if he was it was after almost 2 years now…of questions prodding…answers…policies…explanations…details…and lots and lots of common sense and logic.
that is a very smart buy.
so if the media “sold ” Obama to us.
we should all thank the media for the longest and most detailed and discussed….debate of a sale in the history of our nation.
Obama is the right choice.
Mccain/Palin beyond wrong…
in fact Mccain Palin…the arguably…worst ticket our nation has ever seen.

She can talk the talk due to her education but it the conyents that she speaks thjat counts.ASll Biden has to do is let her talk her self to death and say nothing but astupid jokes.

I have to feel sorry for the people of Alaska that elected palin. My guess is that she will not be able to win re-election as govenor after causing embarrassment to the Alaskan people.

Posted by: pt | October 2, 2008, 9:35 am 9:35 am

and yes…she would have to “SOAR”
to cover up the moronic statements and stupidity that has come out of her mouth ..in only 4 interviews!!!!!
think about how stupid any American would have to be to get as much wrong as Palin has in the 4 interviews.
look at all the issues she has not been able to answer…and tried to cover with malarkey…
that anyone on here practically could have gotten most of those answers
so
NO
she doesn’t “just have to walk on the stage and be relatable”
she has to outshine Biden on knowledge and logic and discussion of issues…3 fold.
the bar did not get lowered…it’s higher.

Why is FEC Keeping Lid on OBAMA SCANDAL?
It looks as if Senator Obama may have received MORE THAN $200 MILLION in illegal donations including millions overseas campaign donations. Four times during the last three months an FEC Auditor has asked his bosses to start an investigation into Senator Obama’s illegal campaign donations such as this one
Similarly, a donor identified as “Pro, Doodad,” from “Nando, NY,” gave $19,500 in 786 separate donations, most of them for $25. For most of these donations, Mr. Doodad Pro listed his employer as “Loving” and his profession as “You,” etc.

dl,
I agree. Some people seem to think we are electing the queen of the junior prom. People need to realize that there would be a real chance that the VP might have to take over as president. Obama/Biden 2008!!!

To DL:
Obama without a written answers or teleprompter.
Um I ohh umm – ehhe I umm umm umm umm!
He has been to 57 states. Duh!
Voted present over 135 times in the US Senate. “Afraid to Committ”
Iran is a small country and does not pose a threat. “WTF”
I would have perfer to seen a gradual increase in gas prices? DuH?
How many trillions in new spending. Where is this money coming from? TAXES my frineds!
So many more to list but since we only have the old geiser McCain and the inexperienced Obama. This country is screwed.
We will elect the next Jimmy Carter.
I agree that Obama was so pushed and shoved done our throats for the past 18 or so months because the mainstream media wants to have the historical election then historical inauguration of a black person and if anyone does not recognize this chooses not to. I am not a Obama supporter but I have been a life time Dem and will be forced to vote for this Bozo. Plain and simple.

I think Sarah will do very well in the debate. Most of this talk about these interviews done recently is just dribble that people have come up with to justify their own position. After all the very experienced and knowledgeable politicians that we have in office and congress now don’t appear to have done their job that well. Why should Sarah Palin’s experience be held to a level above those jokers in congress that are there now

I didn’t see much soaring in the AK debates. Palin did fine but nothing exceptional.
She will just avoid any question she can’t answer. She’s very good at talking herself in circles until time runs out.

Info for the debate tonight:
In the last six months 292 killed (murdered) in Chicago, 221 killed in Iraq.
Obama & Durbin, Jesse Jackson , Rod
Blogojevich, Mike Madigan, Atty. Gen. Lisa Madigan, Mayor
Richard Daley…our leadership in Illinois…all Democrats.
Competitive stats with Iraq in Chicago. Of course they’re all blaming each other. Can’t blame Republicans, there aren’t very many in office in Chicago!
State pension fund $44 Billion in debt, worst in country. Cook County
(Chicago) sales tax 10.25% highest in country. (Look ‘em up if you want).
Chicago school system one of the worst in country.
This is the political culture that Obama comes from in Illinois.

Frank
you have obviously never been in a room where all these candidates have had to answer free form questions from people…
in small auditoriums and living rooms etc etc
I saw almost all of them last year here in Exeter NH
in fact the day before the primaries after doing it for the year… …all of the candidates were in my town doing events… all within a 2 mile radius of my house.
Obama is the smartest guy who ran.(and I saw almost all of them)
and if you look back a year ago…I said the best thing I tool away from all those q and a’s and small grpup events in coffeehouses that I as a political junkie went to…
would be if the smartest guy in general…when it came to logic…Obama
teamed up with the guy who answered the questions in the most detailed grasp of all the issue…Biden…
that would be great for our country.
I said that on ABC’s blogs…last year.
so yer bologne about Obama is someone who has obviously never seen them try and answer a second follow up…
Obama gets better the more the discussion goes on
McCain does…one of three things
Gets mad at the questioner
Makes a joke
or brings up his POW history…seriously…
and i have seen Mccain speak in these small engagements now 4 times.
He is a hawk…
a myopic…wanna have a beer with… millionaire.
Obama is …the guy you want running the country. just like he ran his campaign.

Sara being gov of Alaska has been cut off from the rest of us yes Alaska is a state but, I dont know for the life of me how that woman became gov. From what I have seen so far it would take a miracle for that woman to win the debate. but I Have seen stranger things happen like Bush being elected twice hey you never know she may surprise us all and landslide it!

Posted by: angie | October 2, 2008, 10:09 am 10:09 am

after overhearing some colleagues at work discussing this election it dawned on me, we are in high school again. this election has become more about popularity and celebrity than stability. we are truly not worried about the issues, but we like the next soundbite if it fancies us. the media has spent so much time bashing and debasing palin and mccain that the combined years of experience and true presidential qualities are reduced to snl skits that scoff at the seriousness of this election. on the other hand we have ten year olds being used to promote the obama run singing things like hope, change, ooey, gooey make me feel good bama stuff………sounds like a church kids choir worshipping the wrong entity…….the obama campaign as obama himself is devoid of depth relying instead on celebrity and celebrities to hoodwink the american people and the world. American you don’t want the world to feel good about the leader of the free world and you don’t want the leader of the free world to be the most popular guy on the block. Lincoln wouldn’t have been re-elected, but he saved a nation. think about that and get beyond the cuteness of obama and see him for what he really is, let’s put the popularity contests back in high school where it belongs and start acting like adults who can make sound decisions about who is qualified and capable of taking this country somewhere. don’t be blindsided by celebrity and stop being little puppets whose strings are pulled by the media icons who choose what they think you need to hear. wake up, we don’t need someone for hope and change, we need someone for strength and courage with the gall to stand up and make a decision that is unpopular. grow up america. it’s your choice, a true american hero who has sacrificed or a talking head who has abused the welfare state to advance his career.

The problem is that I have been watching some of these interviews. She has been answering a lot of the questions put to her, but lets look at some of these questions. To say that she doesn’t answer any of them is not true. You must first have an open mind to hear the answers even if you don’t agree.

Reddog – your arguments have been shown to have NO substance. The great thing about the Dem’s primary race is that all of these things have been aired, all of the stories told, all proven to be hyperbole. all taken out of context….. Get something new or sit down and shut up.
Norman, I disagree with you. Mr. Obama has substance, he has ideas and he has surrounded himself with highly intelligent people that I trust to get s out of the mess that Bush has gotten us into.
We need the steady hand of Barrack, we need the vision of a leader not the lies and rhetoric of an old man stuck in the past with a VP that cant answer a simple question.

ill equipped to deal with ANY issue that is facign us…

If you can’t read this posts correctly then how can anyone take your responses with any credibility. Please read my post over again. I have said that McCain is NOT my choice or candidate.
I was only voting for Obama because he is the only choice I have. I have read his US Senate record and it is pretty awful but this is truly our worst choice that I can remember. I voted for Gore than Kerry and both times I was disappointed. If Sarah Palin was capable of pulling it together and coming back with an impressive performance, wouldn’t she have done it already? It seems like day after day of making a mockery of herself on CBS would be something she’d want to avoid. In my mind, the debate will have little effect. Primarily, because I think McCain will continue the policies of the Bush administration. That is enough to vote for Obama. Whether Palin gets in a good dig, doesn’t gaffe, or even does well is really a moot point. I cannot support the party whose deregulation policies have created this economic mess, and who started the Iraq war under false pretenses. I’m voting to fire the Bush legacy.

The time is now!
To remind Americans that Barack Hussein Obama is just another politician that will do or say whatever it takes to fulfill his political ambitions. Barack is calculated and methodical about hiding his true convictions and intentions, and uses deception to get elected.
The time is now!
To remind Americans that Barack Hussein Obama had a 20 year association with his religious leader and priest Jeremiah Wright, who became Barack’s idol and role model. Jeremiah married Barack and Michelle and baptized both their daughters. AND, we all remember the hideous videos of Jeremiah Wright’s congregation which included the Obamas, damning America with bombastic joy, after the Muslim’s criminal attack on America on 9/11.
The time is now!
To remind Americans that Barack’s religious leader Jeremiah Wright used his tax-exempt church to exercise a radical political agenda, and he refers to Israel, as well as America, as a “racist” State. Theologically Barack’s religious leader Jeremiah Wright believes that the true ‘Chosen People’ are the blacks; He believes that black values are superior to middle-class American values, and that blacks should isolate themselves from the wider American society.
Indeed Barack’s religious leader Jeremiah Wright is a black supremacist.
The time is now!
To remind Americans that Barack Hussein Obama wants to be president to implement Jeremiah Wright’s dream of a black supremacist society in America.
The time is now!
For Americans of all political parties to come together to preserve the future of the country we love by voting for John McCain for President of the United States of America.
Country First!
Americans for John McCain/Sarah Palin

I would argue just the opposite. Palin’s bar is incredibly high right now. She has to prove, not only, that her miscues (or non-answers) to date are unusual for her, but also that she has a depth of knowledge far greater than what she displayed. Not to mention, to those of you who like the idea of a low bar, is that what we want for any of our elected officials? (A low bar?) What the heck is the matter with you people?

I only have one question. How many governors could have answered some of the questions Sarah Palin has been asked? The Senators have been in the White House and that is their job. A governor takes care of their particular state which is a fulltime job. All criticizing her couldn’t answer some of these questions either. I think she believes she has to have an answer for everything but she doesn’t. Politely and calmly put it back in the hosts’ park and ask if he or she has a good answer and say she learned something from this interview and thank you. None of us know everything not even a seasoned Senator or Harvard graduate.

Will Palin ask Joe Biden about this monumentally stupid suggestion he made just after 9/11??
Many believe that Barack Obama chose Joe Biden for his running mate to address a profound weakness on foreign policy. Power Line points out an example of the Biden prowess on foreign relations that first appeared in The New Republic’s profile of Biden from October 2001. In a vignette at the end of the article, Biden ponders mightily over how the US should respond to 9/11:
At the Tuesday-morning meeting with committee staffers, Biden launches into a stream-of-consciousness monologue about what his committee should be doing, before he finally admits the obvious: “I’m groping here.” Then he hits on an idea: America needs to show the Arab world that we’re not bent on its destruction.
“Seems to me this would be a good time to send, no strings attached, a check for $200 million to Iran,” Biden declares. He surveys the table with raised eyebrows, a ‘How do ya like that?’ look on his face.
The staffers sit in silence. Finally somebody ventures a response: “I think they’d send it back.” Then another aide speaks up delicately: “The thing I would worry about is that it would almost look like a publicity stunt.” Still another reminds Biden that an Iranian delegation is in Moscow that very day to discuss a $300 million arms deal with Vladimir Putin that the United States has strongly condemned. But Joe Biden is barely listening anymore. He’s already moved on to something else.
First, Iranians aren’t Arabs. They’re Persians, as both Arabs and Iranians would quickly point out to anyone ignorant of the distinction. They have no relation linguistically or culturally, except that both are predominantly Islamic. One would expect a foreign-policy expert to know at least that much. Team Obama ridiculed John McCain when he inadvertently mixed up Sunnis and Shi’ites, but this is much more fundamental.
Beyond that, what would a check for $200 million have bought us with the Iranians? We know what it would have bought for the Iranians — more resources for the nuclear-weapons program already in progress in Tehran. Bear in mind that this was shortly after the attacks on New York City and Washington had caused billions of dollars in damage and perhaps trillions in economic impact, not to mention the 3,000 lives that terrorists ended on that day. If Biden wanted to spend $200 million, maybe he would have thought to spend it on Americans, and not the nation that even then was the acknowledged leader in financing terrorism around the world.

I think she’ll do fine tonight, but it won’t help her. She has defined herself via the babble she demonstrated in those interviews.
Tonight she’ll stick to her talking points, in a format that will be easier than an interview. Republicans will say, “see, she’s not an idiot.” And Democrats will say, “see, she has to stick to talking points.”
But it doesn’t matter. It would be like Dan Quayle having an okay debate – good for him, but afterwards he still would be the guy who can’t spell potato.

So…Palin Lovers…give us an example of a question that the press could ask (assuming they actually had access to her). Doesn’t seem to matter who asks it or what they ask – it becomes a “gotcha” for the Right. Do you think reporters’ questions are the toughest thing she would have to face? BTW, for those of you whining about the moderator for tonight – both candidates have to answer the same questions. How is that biased? THINK PEOPLE. Oh, wait, I forgot Bush/Cheney have brainwashed you already…

C Good: “I only have one question. How many governors could have answered some of the questions Sarah Palin has been asked?”
Like what newspapers do you read? Are you serious?
Even the Supreme Court rulings question, I’d bet a fair amount of money she is the only governor who couldn’t come up with a plausible answer.

Face it, Katie Couric isn’t known as a tough interviewer. We’re not talking Russert here.
But when Palin makes some declarative statement about her running mate – something just thrown out there like its a truism – any interviewer can come up with a follow-up like, “can you give me an example.”
And when Palin has no freakin’ idea of anything that might back up her own statement, Couric like any interviewer can smell blood in the water.
And that was before Palin went back to the poisoned well a second time of claiming foreign policy experience because of Alaska’s proximity to Russia.
Palin flubbed a fluff interview.
If you Republicans are trying to now argue that Couric was too tough on Palin, well, just don’t think anyone is going to be buying that crap.

The comments by all you despicable left wing, socialist Democrats are appalling. To say Sarah Palin is stupid, ignorant, etc. shows how low Democrats would go to win to win an election. Palin is an elected Governor, in charge of the largest state, billions of taxpayer dollars, employs thousands of people, and was elected by a large majority. She has the highest favorable rating in the country. So I guess you are saying all the people in Alaska are stupid and ignorant. No, most of you Hussein Obama robots are stupid and ignorant for buying into this media made, scripted, lying, socialist actor, who would win every acting award for his phony performance.Hussein Obama is an empty suit who is pulling the biggest fraud on the American people in the 200 yr. history of this country.I believe that he has snowballed all you robots so much, that if his running mate was Osama Bin Laden, you idiots would still vote for him. If he wins, and I doubt it, because of the “Bradley effect” all you Democrats in a coma will wake up to regret it, big time. No, No, No, Hussein Obama!!!!!!

If debate perfromances mattered – the DNC and media would have selected Hillary instead of Obama as the democratic nominee.
Hillary won every debate with her clear, crisp, concise and informed responses that reflected her intelligence and years of experience while Obama stuttered and stammered his way through
Uh…um..well…you…I …ah…um

frank v: “To say Sarah Palin is stupid, ignorant, etc. shows how low Democrats would go to win to win an election. Palin is an elected Governor…”
Frank, stop trying to turn everyone who criticizes Palin into an unfair basher. The woman was asked what newspapers she reads, and said, “all of them.”
I can’t imagine anyone, from either party, watching these clips of the Couric interview and being comfortable with Palin.

I am an Obama supporter all the way and most of the criticism against Palin is valid. She is the antithesis of everything I stand for and believe in. HOWEVER, to criticize her because she did not know another court decision she disagreed with aside from Roe V Wade is unfair. I went to law school for a year myself and probably couldn’t name three court cases. No one in the executive branch or legislative branch memorizes court case names. It just isn’t common. On that point, I think she should be left alone. As far as everything else, slam away at her.

Posted by: Mike | October 2, 2008, 12:57 pm 12:57 pm

All Palin has to do is show up…everyone has already given the debate to her.
Never mind if she won’t say anything of substance. All she has to do is recite her talking points and people will call it a landslide victory for her.
The people of this country are so easily taken with how something is said that they don’t ever listen to WHAT is being said anymore.

Gosh, after reading all these posts, I actually realize that all the racists are coming out of the closet (sorry about the gay metaphor-don’t kill yourselves over that…). There are only 3 conceivable reasons anyone rational (or irrational in most cases) would vote for McCain / Palin
a) You make over 250K per year and you are willing to sacrifice your children’s future or others’ childrens’ future to keep a little more money in your pocket (and this is debatable because with Obama, at least we stand a chance of reducing – Yes I said reducing our national debt by less oil dependence– something McCain HAS NEVER BEEN FOR.
b) You are so fanatically fundamentally Christian that you want to bring on the end of the world so that you can be in the busom of Jesus that much sooner and you hope McCain dies so that Palin can start a holy war (because her foreign policy views are dictated by her literal interpretation of the Bible).
c) You are an absolute bigot. And it looks like this class, you know the aswipes who are inbred and fearful of anything different from them (and thank God most of us in America are not like them), who are scared of their own manhood or threatened by their deep inferiority complex which is just below the surface ready to lash out violently. See exibits above in Brian, Paul and others…

You left one out Mike and it applies to millions:
d) you are furious that Hillary Clinton is not the nominee despite receiving more votes than any other presidential primary candidate in history – furious with the DNC for not counting the voice and votes of millions of FL and MI voters, irate that Obama and his goons stooped low enough to call Bill and Hillary Clinton racists (despite their public 30 year record of promoting and supporting civil rights) and you refuse to reward the Obama cheerleaders in the media who relentlessly and unfairly attacked Hillary during the primary.

I hoping to be watching a big train wreck for the Republicans this evening!!!

Posted by: MJ | October 2, 2008, 3:46 pm 3:46 pm

Journalists continue to ask, “What was John McCain thinking in selecting the gaffe-prone Gov. Sarah Palin?”
In what has now become a disturbing pattern, the Alaska governor seems either unable or unwilling to avoid embarrassing statements that are often as untrue as they are outrageous. Recently, for example, in an exclusive interview with news anchor Katie Couric, Palin gushed, “When the stock market crashed, Franklin D. Roosevelt got on the television and didn’t just talk about the, you know, princes of greed. He said, ‘Look, here’s what happened.’ ” Apparently the former Alaskan beauty queen failed to realize that in 1929 there was neither widespread television nor was Franklin Roosevelt even President.
Sometimes the Idaho-native Palin seems to confuse and embarrass her own running mate. Shortly after her nomination, she introduced a “John McAmerica;” then she referred to the Republican ticket as the “Palin-McCain administration;” and finished by calling Sen. Obama, “Senator George Obama.” The Palin gaffes seem to be endless: on her way to Washington to meet the national press corps, Palin, the mother of five, once again stumbled — this time characterizing Senator Biden as “Congressman Joe Biden,” who, she chuckled, was “good looking.”
But then Palin only compounded that growing image of shallowness when introducing her own snow-mobiling husband Todd, “as drop-dead gorgeous!” And when asked about the controversial McCain ad suggesting that Barack Obama had introduced explicit sex education classes to pre-teenagers, the Christian fundamentalist Palin scoffed that it was “terrible” and that she would have never had allowed such an unfair clip to run — before retracting that apology under pressure from the now exasperated McCain campaign staff. But then, according to press reports, wild Sarah only made things worse still by announcing that paying higher taxes was the “patriotic” thing for Americans to do.
This week, the gun-owning, moose-hunting Palin also promised blue-collar Virginians that she would protect their firearm rights — even, if need be, from her own running-mate: “I guarantee you, John McCain ain’t taking my shotguns, so don’t buy that malarkey. Don’t buy that malarkey. They’re going to start peddling that to you. I got two. If he tries to fool with my Beretta, he’s got a problem. I like that little over and under, you know? I’m not bad with it. So give me a break. Give me a break.”
Palin may have had some experience in Alaskan politics, but at times the former small-town mayor seems unaware of the pressures of running a national campaign in a diverse society. For example, Palin — who has had past associations with reactionary groups — caused a storm earlier when she characterized Democratic Presidential nominee Barack Obama in seemingly racialist terms: “I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy.” Such stereotyping suggested that the Alaskan was not aware of the multiracial nature of American politics — an impression confirmed when in her earlier gubernatorial run, she had once suggested that to enter a donut shop was synonymous with meeting an Indian immigrant.
The recently-elected Governor Palin was further rattled by media scrutiny, when, in a moment of embarrassing candor, she confessed, “Mitt Romney is as qualified or more qualified than I am to be vice president of the United States of America. Quite frankly he might have been a better pick than me.” That confession followed an earlier deer-in-the-headlights moment, when the nearly hysterical Palin urged a wheel-chair bound state legislator to rise: “Sally, stand up, let the people see you!”
The Palin gaffes are no surprise to those who have followed closely her previous races. They cite her aborted governor campaign, when she was forced to pull out after fraudulently claiming that her working-class family had been Idaho coal miners — in an apparent case of plagiarism of British Prime Minister candidate Neal Kinnock’s stump speech. Palin once boasted: “I started thinking as I was coming over here, why is it that Sarah Palin’s the first in his family ever to go to University . . . is it because our fathers and mothers were not bright . . . who worked in the coal mines of Northeast Idaho and would come up after 12 hours and play volleyball?” It did not help Palin that reporters quickly discovered that while as a student at the University at Idaho she had been caught plagiarizing and also misrepresented her undergraduate transcript.
Most recently on the campaign trail, Governor Palin apparently promised a vocal supporter that the United States would certainly not burn coal to produce electricity — even though roughly half of current U.S. power production is coal-fired. The same uncertainty seems to extend to foreign policy. Under cross-examination, Palin appeared confused about her own recent trips abroad, first claiming that her helicopter had “been forced down” in Afghanistan, although other passengers suggested the landing was a routine cautionary measure to avoid a possible snowstorm. Palin likewise had alleged that she was shot at while in Baghdad’s Green Zone, although there was no evidence from her security detail that she had, in fact, come under hostile fire.
The Obama campaign has lost no time in hammering at the former hockey-mom Palin’s foreign-policy judgment, alleging that shortly after September 11 she once suggested sending $200 billion to Iran as a “good will” gesture, and reminding journalists that in repeated interviews, Palin had called for dividing Iraq into three separate nations, despite Iraqi resistance to such outside interference. Palin, the nominal head of the Alaskan National Guard, has also falsely insisted that Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Admiral Mullen had once suggested that we were losing the war in Iraq and that the Bush administration had sent Undersecretary of State William Burns to Teheran to meet with Iranian officials.
In response to Palin’s unbridled misstatements, journalists have coined the term “Palinism” — the serial voicing of sweeping declarations that are either insulting, or untrue — or both. No wonder rumors mount that Sen. McCain is now seeking a possible graceful exit for the gaffe-prone Palin, even as the Obama campaign continues to make the contrast with their own sober and circumspect Joe Biden.
