The Note: Palin Seeks to Rock Stable Race

ABC News’ Rick Klein reports in Wednesday’s Note: As three of the four folks on the tickets return to their day jobs Wednesday, pay attention to the fact that the fourth candidate has cracked open “Joe Six-Pack” in time for her cramming sessions.

Don’t look now — but has the race’s outline been written? Blame it on the big things that are larger than the candidates — the economic crisis, President Bush’s historically awful approval ratings, the inability of any senator to soar in a period of national angst — but where we stand today is essentially where we stood six weeks ago..

Which is one reason why that fourth candidate matters now more than ever. Gov. Sarah Palin puts herself on the line in Thursday’s debate — and will there be another single moment that’s as big for the tenor of this race? Will there be another chance to shoot holes through the old outline and field dress a new one?

(How much of her performance will depend on who gets to set expectations — “Saturday Night Live” or the mainstream media — raising Palin’s bar before our eyes?)

If this qualifies as daylight in the race, maybe we should get ready for a long night. The new ABC News/Washington Post poll speaks to an odd sort of stability that’s set in despite shifts among independent voters — resulting in a narrow but consistent lead for Sen. Barack Obama.

Read the rest of The Note — and get all the latest on the 2008 election, Congress, the White House and the wide world of politics every day — from Rick Klein by bookmarking this link.

Obama saw his White Sox beat the Twins 1-0 to squeak into the playoffs Tuesday. But even very late leads can change.

“Barack Obama maintains an advantage on the economy, especially economic empathy, and he’s cracked majority acceptance on his key challenge, experience. But the political center remains unrooted, keeping John McCain in the race, albeit against headwinds,” ABC polling director Gary Langer writes.

“Movement continues among independents, quintessential swing voters and a highly changeable group this year,” Langer writes. “They favored McCain by 10 points immediately after the Republican convention, swung to Obama last week and stand now at a close division between the two — 48 percent for McCain, 45 percent for Obama in the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll.”

It’s Obama 50, McCain 46 among likely voters — looking closer than the nine points the poll pegged the race at a week ago, despite a debate where more respondents said Obama won.

And how do you play this? “Voters are deeply divided over the terms of the government’s $700 billion economic rescue package but overwhelmingly fear that the House’s rejection of the measure on Monday could deepen the country’s financial woes,” Dan Balz and Jon Cohen write in The Washington Post.

ABC News own poll shows Obama LOST 5 percentage points. The race is within 4 points — 50 -46 Obama — yet ABC News still has on their own website all the headlines from LAST WEEK. You can’t make this up. Their headline on their own webpage is Obama opens big lead 52-43!!! This is the Gewn Ifill school of idiocy.
Good Morning America and the Washington Post didn’t mention their own poll showing a McCain surge.
This is a symbolic moment in liberal media derangement — the CENSORSHIP of a poll that shows their candidate LOSING ground.

The media – which is definitely not liberal! – is doing just fine. The new poll is skewed 2 points to Caucasian and Republicans. There are analyses all over the web of the poll. For undecided voters, please watch Senator McCain’s video response to the Des Moines Register questions. That, too, is available on the web. It is truly shocking and bears out reports regarding his temper and fitness for the office he is running for.

First of all the ABC poll was crap. You changed the party ID by 12% in one week and there is no way Obama went from being 2% up among white women to 11% down in one week, when every other poll shows Obama increasing his overall support. Secondly by Palin calling herself “Joe Sixpack” she only ties herself closer to Bush which doesn’t help.

“I do not belive polls. All my democrat friends and family members are going to vote for McCain.” – Jake1. Jake1, I think you’re absolutely right. My family is half Democratic, and we’re voting McCain, too. An interesting note – many of my older family members refuse to put McCain signs on their lawns or bumper stickers on their cars. They let their answering machines pick up instead of answering the phones because they don’t want calls from the Obama campaign or from pollsters. Many of them have stated that, if contacted by a pollster, they would say they’re for Obama just to “avoid trouble.” They are afraid the information they gave would not be kept confidential. When I told a co-work about my relatives, she said virtually the same thing (and she is a young woman!!). She is a registered Democrat, and would NEVER admit to a pollster that she is voting for McCain. These pollsters might share information with the Obama people, she said. I never thought about the fear factor until I heard those comments. It makes me wonder how accurate the polls actually are. Are some registered Democrats lying to pollsters because they’re afraid to admit they’re backing McCain? We’ll know on November 4. (If you have heard similar comments from family/friends, would you respond?)

Carrie, I am a John McCain supporter, and an Independent. I did have Obama campaigners show up at my door, and I told them I’m voting for McCain. I would have no trouble telling a pollster what I think, but I do know people who would not – my mother and sisters, and my three aunts. They’re all Dems for McCain. None would admit to it publically. Would they lie to a pollster? Yeah, I’d bet my paycheck on it.

Frankly, I don’t have any problems with Palin answers and I am a PhD from the University of Chicago. This lady speaks and talk like many of the people I met before, she is not “so sophisticated or used the language and big words we in the main cities or “Ivy League” schools, nor she uses calculated words like many of the DC politicians. She is simple and I believe people mistaken if they are comparing her to Hillary, Biden, Obama, Ferraro, etc. Those are people from different places, backgrounds, circles and lets face it very comfortable with the elites. They can’t understand the cultural divide in this country, not everyone speaks and talks like the elite or big words politicians or script writers. Palin speaks a language that probably is a disgrace for the elites; but his words resound in middle America and that’s what matters!
Ironically the same people that are adoring Obama with all his lacking of knowledge of issues, experience, those ones blinded by his charisma and seen no wrong or mistakes on him are the same ones that rushed to trash Palin with out getting to really know her. They have giving him 3 years to prepare and get used to his talking points and teleprompter and they are the same ones mocking and ridiculing Palin. That’s a real double standard!
Like for example, what is wrong not to mention the newspapers she reads? I am sure she reads plenty. She just doesn’t want too say it at this time. LOL. why to make an issue out of it??? I shouldn’t be more objective to ask her staff about it? You can see the underline trend too create a caricature about her.

Because it’s the state by state polls that matter.
Ohio: Obama +8
Florida: Obama +8
Virginia: Obama +6
North Carolina: Obama +2
Iowa: Obama +10
Colorado: Obama +4
New Mexico: Obama +11
These are states Bush won in 2000 and 2004.

Carrie, I would never lie to a pollster because I think people are influenced very much by polls. If one candidate is leading in the polls, some of the other candidate’s supporters might not show up at the polls, figuring why bother? However, this subject you brought up has been discussed in my own circle of friends. My parents (in their sixties) would never admit to voting for McCain. They are registered Democrats. I don’t think they’d actually lie to a pollster. I think they would just hang up.

I have never seen such desperation on the part of the media. First they are trying to tar and feather Palin. Most of America identifies with her. The media is on shaky ground here.
Second they are trying to keep the news from us that the bail out is actually a bail out for Chinese and other foreign banks. The provision to make the bail out for American firms that had ownership of paper on September 20th was scrubbed.
Go Palin!

Posted by: lately | October 1, 2008, 9:44 am 9:44 am

Is the main reason people some people may not vote for Palin is because of her lack of foreign policy experience. She has as much as Obama.
Almost every president in this past century has been a governor with no, or virtually no, foreign policy experience. Palin, like Obama will have to do, can learn it on the job. Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton did not have any foreign policy experience. So why all the fuss.
Biden is a little addle brained now…

Gwen Ifell should recuse herself.

THE WALL STREET BAILOUT IS A TRAP:
YOU DID THE RIGHT THING people by stopping this 700 billion dollar bailout of Wall Street with your money. It’s a trap set by the Bush McCain administration years ago to spring on you, and the World just before the November elections. It will cripple our economy for years to come by taking away money from important social programs like health care reform, education, and social security.
What ever congress does to try and fix our stunning economic catastrophe needs to be done very carefully. Congress needs to take their time, and be sure of what they are doing. Whatever is done needs to be sharply focused at helping, and protecting the best interest of the ordinary Americans. In particular the vast American middle class. 700 billion dollars is a lot of the peoples money to spend to bail out a bunch of corrupt Bush loan sharks.
When have you ever known any government plan, or project to only cost what the government said it would. Remember the war in Iraq. Bush and his so-called advisers said it would only cost you about 80 billion dollars. But we now know that the war in Iraq will cost you, and your children, and your grand children over a trillion dollars, and still counting.
So if 80 billion can end up costing you over a trillion dollars. How much could 700 billion end up costing you. Any math wizards out there. I come up with 9 trillion…:-(
My fellow human beings, just as I warned you ahead of this catastrophic economic meltdown, I must now warn you that what is ahead has the potential to be even more catastrophic than what we are going through now. The worlds geopolitical landscape has been booby trapped by the Bush McCain administration and their republican allies in congress. These booby traps are poised to spring at any time.
Fortunately the Worlds Nations have been blessed with many excellent leaders (except the US) who have been careful, wise, strong, and self-restrained in dealing with the provocations, and antagonism’s of the Bush, McCain administration.
Barack Obama and the democrats are your best hope now. Tell your family, friends, and everyone you know to support them as best you can, and vote for them like your life, and the lives of your loved ones depends on it. Because it does. You will not survive 4 more years of Bush McCain.

The problem with the media is they are so use to the polished Politicans with their grands speaches, and empty talk! When we get a person such as Mrs. Palin the media sticks their nose up in the air and says she is not our cup of tea! Well ABC/CBS/MSNBC she may not be your cup of tea but watch election night, the American people will show you she is our cup of tea! As for the polls, I can tell you that people are not telling the truth to the pollsters, because I have had several freinds who have been called, and they have also lied saying they would vote for Obama when in fact they are voting for McCain! I think there is going to be some very upset people in the media come election night wondering how McCain won when all the polls showed Obama ahead! I guess you can say it will be called the Bradly effect because deep down people see Obama as nothing but empty speaches and way to far to the left!

The co-founder of the Arab group in question, Columbia University professor Rashid Khalidi, also has held a fundraiser for Obama. Khalidi is a harsh critic of Israel, has made statements supportive of Palestinian terror and reportedly has worked on behalf of the Palestine Liberation Organization while it was involved in anti-Western terrorism and was labeled by the State Department as a terror group.
In 2001, the Woods Fund, a Chicago-based nonprofit that describes itself as a group helping the disadvantaged, provided a $40,000 grant to the Arab American Action Network, or AAAN, for which Khalidi’s wife, Mona, serves as president. The Fund provided a second grant to the AAAN for $35,000 in 2002.
Obama was a director of the Woods Fund board from 1999 to Dec. 11, 2002, according to the Fund’s website. According to tax filings, Obama received compensation of $6,000 per year for his service in 1999 and 2000.
Obama served on the Wood’s Fund board alongside William C. Ayers, a member of the Weathermen terrorist group which sought to overthrow of the U.S. government and took responsibility for bombing the U.S. Capitol in 1971.
Ayers, who still serves on the Woods Fund board, contributed $200 to Obama’s senatorial campaign fund and has served on panels with Obama at numerous public speaking engagements. Ayers admitted to involvement in the bombings of U.S. governmental buildings in the 1970s. He is a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
The $40,000 grant from Obama’s Woods Fund to the AAAN constituted about a fifth of the Arab group’s reported grants for 2001, according to tax filings obtained by WND. The $35,000 Woods Fund grant in 2002 also constituted about one-fifth of AAAN’s reported grants for that year.

Watch the video of Palin’s past debates and you’ll realize that Palin will mop the stage with Biden.
She won’t answer the question, but instead talk about something else. This will throw Biden off.
America will be calling Palin the greatest debater in history. Funny thing is, if they look at the facts of her answers, it will be complete gibberish. This is just like Bush has done his entire career. Americans love a candidate who doesn’t talk about issues. That’s why Palin will win the whitehouse for McCain.

Carrie,
1st of all neither you nor your family and friends are Democrats. You’re a Republican trawling the comments trying to throw a curve ball.
It does not make sense that a real Democrat would vote Republican because even if you thought JM was more to the center before this election, he has shown his true colors in the weeks and months since and shows he is true to his Republican party and roots. Which is fine, mind you. What we have now are a true Dem and a true Rep representing their party. Neither are partisan. MC and SP don’t represent what we as Dems view as good for our country and vice versa. So if you’re voting for MC, you’re not a Dem and never was. You’re a Rep. Which is fine. But why the stupid 6th grade Jedi mind trick post? Grow up. Reminds me of the Repubs after the vote failed….”Nancy was mean to me so I don’t wanna play no more”

reddog0216:”It seems to me that Obama could not even rally his own party to pass the bill that shows me such leadership.”
Then you are a deliusional Republican zealot. The facts are over 60% of Democrats supported the Republican administration’s bill, which had the full backing of the House and Senate REPUBLICAN leadership. Only 40% of Republicans in the house supported the bill despite John McCain’s all-out effort.
Reality shows that Obama’s “phoning it in” was vastly more successful than John McCain’s drop everything, this is my #1 priority, effort to get a Republican supported and initiated bill through. If you look at Obama’s IL senate record this is not surprising – he is a very effective legislator (better than “maverick,” ie unable to get anyone to support his legislation, McCain).

John McCain made a mockery of the last 50 years of the women’s movement by choosing Gov. Palin as his running mate. Women struggled to ensure they were equal in the workplace and achieved positons of power not by being cutesy and evading the tough questions but rather because they have the knoweldge and intellect to do so. Women of power gained that power by being smart not being cute and evasive. As a woman I very much resent her using these old antiquated stereotypical female traits to get ahead..it belittles us all!! If you cant compete on the same level with equal intellegence & knowledge of the issues please leave it to the many many many women who can!!

As with most media outlets ABC is inline with NBC/MSNBC, CBS in their obvious support for Obama. It is sickening to watch them paint Obama as a person of “change”. Remember he sat in a church with a militant pastor for 20 years before it became convenient to drop him after people saw the video that came out of him God D”ing” America. And then there was Pfleger, another militant pastor. Does anyone really believe he would have dropped out of the church if those videos had not surfaced? Remember that he has had very close ties to William Ayers and again tries to distance himself when anyone brings it up. Remember Franklin Raines and Jim Johnson? The hits keep coming … and the media keeps the blind eye!

mtr2311…I agree with you. This is what a blogger on No Quarter had to say.
- from the IBD article:
As a Nairobi bureaucrat, Barack Hussein Obama Sr., a Harvard-educated economist, grew to challenge the ruling pro-Western government for not being socialist enough. In an eight-page scholarly paper published in 1965, he argued for eliminating private farming and nationalizing businesses “owned by Asians and Europeans.”
His ideas for communist-style expropriation didn’t stop there. He also proposed massive taxes on the rich to “redistribute our economic gains to the benefit of all.”
“Theoretically, there is nothing that can stop the government from taxing 100% of income so long as the people get benefits from the government commensurate with their income which is taxed,” Obama Sr. wrote. “I do not see why the government cannot tax those who have more and syphon some of these revenues into savings which can be utilized in investment for future development.”
No – We Can’t!

Hey Jack Smith. You got your timing off. The trap was set by Clinton when he signed the bill setting up Fannie Mae and Fredie Mac to back his “House for every American” plan. He changed the rules because the lenders were being too careful and low income Americans and minorities were getting turned down on loans. Guess what? Now they can’t afford their mortgages. What a surprise. Bigger surprise – it has nothing to do with Bush. His focus has been on keeping terrorists from blowing you up. Evidently that hasn’t been too popular. I guess he should have let them blow you up so his approval rating would be higher.

It not a republican admin. bill the president said 700 billion was needed. The democrats designed and brought the bill to the house.Secondly the hose does not need the republicans to pass the bill and if it was such a good deal they would of.The fact that McCain went to DC was to make sure the republicans were involved in the deal and the Republicans still were not happy with the deal. Now they are making the deal more palatable for the Republicans and the american people.

The more I read and hear Obama, the more he reminds be of Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker (Baker). The religious pair that pulled millions of dollars from unsuspecting people and air conditioned their doghouse. Obama’s speeches remind me more of a sermon than a political talk. Of course, he is use to talking like a preacher in the church he attends. We do not see or hear anything about whites and Jews.

Does no one see that McCain is nearly exactly the same as Bush-but older. That is why we are in the mess the Republican party has put us in-and I’m a registered REpublican. I will vote for Obama-nobody has presidential experience until they become president. Look what Bush did with his 4 years.
Does no one realize that McCain is 72 YEARS OLD!!! Dementia starts at 65-1 in 5-and increases every 5 years. Hey, I loved Reagans’s speeched-but now it is admitted he was beginning Alzheimers while in office.
Obama has ideas-especially on the war we should not be in, the one we maybe should be in, on health care, knows the problems we’re facing, can talk with people.
Anybody wanting more of the last Bush 8 years-maybe you have denemtia too.

She’ll repeat her talking points well, but won’t offer any substance or depth. The end result will be McCain supporters saying she “rocked,” while Obama supporters will say she lacked substance and never demonstrated understanding.
The only two questions are 1) how the 10 percent or so undecided voters will see it, assuming they’re watching, and 2) whether anyone really cares about the debate between prospective number twos?

Mr. Cutler and Obama do not recognize the real problem with health care costs. I looked at a WSJ article and Mr. Cutler missed too many important points.
No one is addressing the real causes of rising health care costs. The doctors and the pharmaceutical companies are the number one cause of American sickness and death. Preventative health measures are great when people stop drinking alcohol in excess, stop eating junk foods, stop smoking cigarettes, stop using uncontrolled substances and drugs, stop the use of white sugar, use regular exercise and observe better nutrition. People will be healthier using more of a caveman diet and not the modern day diet of processed foods.
The reason for the tremendous increase in malpractice insurance is due to the insurance carriers knowing the dangers to human life by taking prescription drugs. There is no cure for cancer and the doctors know there is no cure. The doctors will use the word remission and not the word cure for cancer. I was associated with a 700 bed hospital for over thirty years. I know of doctors that would not take vaccines, fearing serious side effects or death, I know of two medical doctors that injected a lethal dose of a drug into their veins and died rather than go through the horrors of worthless chemotherapy. Yet Obama wants to spent trillions of dollars on a failing system called medicine.
Obama and McCain do not have a good health care plan. At least McCain makes people do something other than depend on the taxpayers to pay for every human need. Communism failed in Russia because the government wanted to control everything. America’s forefathers did not establish a country with socialistic ideals. Obama does not get it. This is America not Russia, Kenya or Indonesia.
Mr. Cutler and Obama want to give large sums of money to a broken health care system at taxpayers expense. If Obama wants socialism, then he should go home to his other country, wherever that may be. Obama, let me know when you are leaving, I’ll be there to wave good-bye.

Some posters like to talk about a presidential candidate’s age, but age is really a misconception for some people.
On a Barbara Walters special, we saw a 103-year-old woman caring for her seriously-ill 80-year-old daughter, who later died. Barbara Walters even visited a centenarian club, where people over 100 years of age congregated so they could meet others in their age group.
President John Tyler had eight children with Letitia, and seven with Julia. Their youngest child, Pearl, was conceived when Tyler was 70 years old.
Ageless Advice on Making the Rest of Your Life the Best of Your Life by Art Linkletter and Mark Victor Hansen. They celebrated Art Linkletter’s 94th birthday by beginning their 50-city book-promotion media tour. I was the first of a dozen-some media interviews they had planned for this muggy 100-degree day. Art had just walked up 35 flights of stairs and he was in his usual humorous form. The synergy between these two dynamic coauthors creates an absolutely contagious and ageless energy that will make you look forward to your senior years. Whether you’re 24, 44, or 94, the myths you’ve been holding onto about growing old have gotten old. I loved the book myself and I’m sure you’ll want a copy for yourself and any senior in your life.
I am 70-years-old and I have a son 8-years-old, a daughter 5-years-old and a daughter 2 ½-years-old.

I’m headed to the local Obama office to help work the phones this afternoon. First time I have ever volunteered. I also signed on early for monthly contributions for the first time.
Obama is moving ahead because his team is being seen as more able to handle the problems facing the country. Palin at first a boon now a boondoggle to McCain. More and more conservatives are voicing the opinion that she is not qualified to be VP. Her lack of knowledge on subjects like Supreme court decisions, her running mates record on banking regulation, her inability to name one major publication she reads for information, etc., etc. To say nothing of her lies on the bridge and earmarks, the ebay sale.
You have to be a real die hard to keep the faith in this lady.

All of those right-wing nuts who keep claiming Gwen Ifill’s in the tank for Obama need to calm down. Advance copies of the book aren’t even out yet, so nobody even knows what she wrote in the book. At this stage people are just making assumptions about something they don’t even know. She’s a qualified veteran journalist, who will treat each candidate with respect.
On the otherhand, Tom Brokaw has been conversing with the McCain campaign trying to placate them into interviews with NBC. He’s the one who shouldn’t be moderating the next presidential debate.

Judge: “Paul, Please, use comments that have some meat in them. It looks like all you have are empty words, like the words of all Obama supporters.”
Okay Judge, here’s some meat, from McCain himself on his own ambitions.
“I didn’t decide to run for president to start a national crusade for the political reforms I believed in or to run a campaign as if it were some grand act of patriotism. In truth, I wanted to be president because it had become my ambition to be president…In truth, I’d had the ambition for a long time.”
So, now, what was he saying about country first?

Posted by: Paul | October 1, 2008, 12:46 pm 12:46 pm

And then here’s another piece of meat, from McCain on the Letterman show in October 2001:
LETTERMAN: How are things going in Afghanistan now?
MCCAIN: “I think we’re doing fine… I think we’ll do fine. The second phase — if I could just make one, very quickly — the second phase is Iraq. There is some indication, and I don’t have the conclusions, but some of this anthrax may — and I emphasize may — have come from Iraq.”
LETTERMAN: “Oh is that right?”
MCCAIN: “If that should be the case, that’s when some tough decisions are gonna have to be made.”
Note how he first announces an attack on Iraq – it “is” phase two – and does so long before Bush claims to have made that decision.
Also note how he then stumbles and fumbles for a justification, and says we may have to deal with Iraq because they might have been behind the anthrax attacks – but this after he already called Iraq a second phase of the war.
Is this the stable leader we need?

reddog0216,
You obviously haven’t been paying attention to the bailout news. It was the congressional leaders (Republicans and Democrats) that came up with the bill. Republican Senate and Congress leaders claimed that they would have enough support form their side to help pass the bill.
It was the House Republicans who mucked it up, not the Democrats. Two-thirds of the House Republicans voted AGAINST the bill, while two-thirds of the House Democrats voted for it.
Now they are adding a few more elements to placate the House Republicans so that the stock market doesn’t crash again like it did on Monday..

And, Judge, let’s talk about the debate and meat.
Unlike the pundits who think McCain did fine on foreign policy, I think he showed himself as a guy who really doesn’t have much vision or given much thought to it.
I’m assuming you watched the debate. Can you tell me McCain’s vision for foreign policy?
I heard a travelogue, I heard some name dropping (he screwed up a couple names, too) and I heard him say over and over again that Obama doesn’t understand. But I never heard anything about what McCain thinks.
So here’s an opening. Please enlighten me about John McCain’s vision of the world. Hopefully you have more to say than just this simplistic caricature that seems to be developing of him seeing everything in simplistic good versus evil terms.

As far as white democrats not admitting their plans to vote for McCain- the bigger surprise is not about the democratic racists but the millions of blacks in American who will turn out in the millions in swing states to vote. This is a “quiet” grassroot effort that started in community centers and churches across the country to get blacks registered and to the polls. Obama will win this election because of their quiet support.
The Palin situation is out of hand- She is not ready to be VP, period. As a successful executive female and mom, her choice as running mate and her intellect is an insult to all working women. I know at least 100 women that are more qualified and “ready” to be VP than she is. She is a mockery to all the smart women in the USA!. Tell us what papers you read, bim!!! embarassing and a true lack of judgement and question of character for the republicans.
It is even painful for the Republican pundits to spin the palin and mccain’s, many senior moments now- What they say is laughable and they crinch at supporting these two fools!

Oh, I see, Judge is for Nader. I have difficulty reading for enough down some of these long posts – guess its the ADHD kicking in.
I’m all for third parties running candidates, and while the two party system does give us some stability that multi-party governments don’t have, I do wish the deck wasn’t quite so stacked against our third party candidates.
But the fact is that deck is stacked. Either Obama or McCain is going to be the next president.
Anyone hoping to reform the deck is going to have to work on that during an off election year, and even then, they’re probably going to be hitting a brick wall more than anything else.

Judge: “Paul, Obama states he would go into Pakistani territory without Pakistan’s permission. I guess you missed that one.”
Didn’t miss that at all.
Obama said if we have actionable intelligence on his location, and Pakistan won’t get him, we will.
This doesn’t necessarily mean an invasion, and in context, it was pretty clear Obama was referring to an over-the-horizon strike.
Meanwhile, erratic McCain first said he would follow bin Laden to the gates of hell (that’s a quote) and later said Obama was naive for suggesting he’d strike at bin Laden’s location.
Since Obama stated that position, the Bush Administration has assumed the policy. We’ve launched numerous strikes into those tribal areas, some with what the military is calling positive results.
Granted, this has ratcheted up tensions between the Pakistanis and us.
But note the difference. Obama specifically said actionable intelligence about bin Laden’s position. The Bush Administration seemingly has expanded that to include suspected training camps, etc.
Yet nothing from McCain about whether the Bush Administration is being naive, huh?
Now, the question I have is what Republican is saying we shouldn’t take a shot at bin Laden if we clearly have him in the crosshairs?

I believe there are a lot of people who will either write in Hillary Clinton (which, to me, seems like a wasted vote) or who will vote for McCain AGAINST Obama and who are indeed to make their intention “public.” I base my assessment on my own experience during the primaries when I was called a racist (and worse) for the first time in my life by several Obama supporters because they simply would not believe my “non-belief” in him could be anything other than prejudice. Several of these people told me, “You can’t help being racist because you’re white,” while at the same time informing me black people CANNOT be racist because they’re not in power.
I was a Democrat; I’m now an Independent who is, indeed, going to vote for McCain, and here are the reasons why:
-Obama supporters and the DNC say Hillary Clinton and Obama’s policies are “nearly identical.” Maybe that’s true, but I still, after all these months have heard very few specifics of what Obama’s policies actually are.
-I have concerns about a man who said he was not ready three years ago (a sentiment shared by his now-running mate earlier this year)and who does not seem to be ready for anything beyond rhetoric.
-Obama may well be about “change,” but from what I’ve observed from him, his campaign, his associates and his supporters, the “change” I have seen (hatred, name-calling, racist rants about white America, calling people like Bill and Hillary Clinton and Geraldine Ferraro racists, implicitly allowing people like Michael Pfleger to call his opponent a “bitch,” etc.) is not change I can believe in, for our country or for my family.
-It really comes down to trust for me. I don’t agree with all of McCain or Palin’s policies, but what I do believe is they both want what’s best for this country and that they will do everything they can to make it better, including reaching out to Democrats. I do not trust Obama to do that, and given the state of our economy and in the world, we need someone who will. When I listen to Obama, his campaign, his supporters, his associates, what I hear is, “It’s all about Obama.” Sorry, we’ve had that the last eight years.
-I don’t want to go through the next four or eight years listening how Bush & Co. screwed this up. This catastrophe belongs to ALL of us, politicians and citizens alike. It’s time we as Americans stop passing the buck, take some responsibility and work on a plan to make things better. The only candidate I’ve heard do that is John McCain.
-Finally, the DNC and Obama, et al. made it extremely clear that Hillary Clinton’s supporters were not important. Is was only until the race was so close that suddenly Sen. Clinton became Obama’s “close friend” and the pressure is on to vote for the DNC nominee.
Sorry, I don’t vote party, I vote for a person (and in some ways, I’m voting against two people – Obama and Biden – this time)because I believe that if they are elected, we are in worse trouble than we are in now.

A question, MJ – Isn’t 92%-97% of black voters voting for Obama racist? It seems to me if a white candidate was doing what Obama has done, it would certainly be looked at in that manner.
While I can appreciate this may be a historic moment for the black community, isn’t it more important to elect the RIGHT candidate, not someone who is merely the right skin color, right gender, right religion, etc.?
It amazes me that people – some very intelligent, educated people – really believe that it’s acceptable for blacks to vote for Obama BECAUSE HE IS BLACK and that’s not racist and everyone who refuses to vote for him – with very legitimate concerns – is the racist?
Sorry, it doesn’t wash.

Um, Judge, neither Afghanistan nor Pakistan are in the Middle East, so not sure what your point is here.
And I’m a veteran myself (retired Marine officer), also think I can see through national security BS, and I see more BS in McCain’s words than in Obama’s, by far.
For instance, McCain echoed Clinton’s criticism of Obama over his comment that nuclear weapons were never on the table as part of our arsenal against terrorists.
The simple fact is Obama is consistent with 60 years of U.S. nuclear policy, in which we do unilaterally claim to not consider use of nukes against non-governmental organizations. Its not clear whether Clinton nor McCain understand that policy. Its not clear that what both seemed to be suggesting was actually a radical departure from existing U.S. policy.
Look at McCain on the Georgian situation. All emotion, with no reason. If we are all Georgians, then in effect Russians were committing acts of war against Americans at the time of those words.
Over and over, we’re seeing Obama as the steady, serious candidate and McCain bouncing off the wall’s like a rubber ball.

Questions:
“white Alaskan trash?” – why bring race into this? Is that your problem with McCain and Palin – their race?
“vote for change, vote for equality?” It sounds to me that while you certainly want change, the last thing you want is equality. You want “superiority.” Are you so angry and resentful of white people? Maybe I’m misreading you, but I find it sad that Obama supporters bring race into this election so often and are not called on it.
I’m sorry if you have had a negative experience with other races – if that’s even the case, but that does not mean that voters should decide in a knee-jerk response that the solution is to elect the first black candidate to come up for election. You don’t seem to get that it’s not that Obama is black; it’s that he’s not the right candidate for many of us. Your disdain for white people is sad and it is frightening.
I wonder what will happen if Obama doesn’t get elected. More disturbingly, what happens if he does? Will our country head down the path of people like you and your “white trash” mentality or like Rev. Wright or, in Obama’s own words, “bitter white voters?” Is this really what you think of your fellow Americans.
Certainly, there is racism on all sides, but I think you have shown a very negative side to Obama’s candidacy and to his supporters. And – should he be elected – he will have a free ride for at least two years with Pelosi and Dean in charge. Think about it.

It seems We like the presidential candidate to be Funny, rather than serious. We(majority of us) are very emotional and sympathetic, more than needed and get swayed away from issues very easily coz of short memory, I guess.
GOD, make my opinion wrong this election year.

daisy: ONE DAY LEFT PALIN!!
There’s only one day left before the debate Palin… Ouch, it isn’t going to be pretty…
You and McCain can play down expectations, you can talk about being “Joe six-pack” whatever you want. However sweetie, this is the big leagues and you are going to get beaten shamefully. Not by Joe Biden, but by yourself!!
My guess is by Friday morning you and the rest of your family will be on a Greyhound bus back to Alaska, tickets courtesy of the Republicans…
Your stupidity will be so obvious, that even the dumbest of your redneck supporters will desert you!!!
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Judge: “Double jeopardy is not being tried for the same crime twice after being found innocent.”
Sheesh, it was a joke. But I can see how supporting Nader would cause one to lose a sense of humor, lol.
Just pointing out that its a little tiresome to see the same thing posted over and over again, just eating up space here on the message board.

Anyone who lets their vote be swayed by Oprah Winfrey, The View, Saturday Night Live or any other show or celebrity is kind of sad, in my opinion.
Likewise, people who sway with the wind based on polls.
Vote your conscience – no matter what that is – because if the wrong choice is made this election, you can bet Oprah Winfrey has enough money to weather the storm and she’s not going to care whether she swayed your vote or not.

Surprise Obama; you may not be the first Afro-American president of the United States of America.

The democrats need to give their party an enema and the news media could use the same treatment. I get most of my news from overseas. I’m fed up with the sleazy politics of American media’s bias. Once upon a time fairness was a big factor in life. Now I see a media frenze of piling on Sarah Palin. The left fears anyone who is plain speaking and honest. I quess the media has spent too many years associating with pond scum. WWTerry

ENOUGH- That is what I say
We live in a racist and sexist nation that has been run by rich white men. That is a fact. Both Hillary and Obama offer women and blacks an opportunity to be heard and represented. We are not going to take it any more. That isn’t racism, that isn’t sexism, that is the opportunity for equality- for more women and blacks that deserve positions of power to be appointed, that deserve equal pay to be paid equal pay, that have broken dreams and can now hope for a better life. This is what America needs. I say ENOUGH already of the same old, same male universe- look where it has gotten us; on the verge of world war, on the verge of financial collapse, on the verge of world pollution that is killing the earth
ENOUGH- Obama for change

I feel a little sorry for Joe Biden. No matter how much he will try to dumb down to Palin’s level, he will still be blamed for talking down to someone dumber than a rock.

The moderator for the VP debate Thursday is in the tank for Obama:
Gwen Ifill is moderator and managing editor of “Washington Week” and senior correspondent for “The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer.” She is also frequently asked to moderate debates in national elections, including the Vice Presidential debate during the 2004 election and the upcoming Vice Presidential debate scheduled for October. Ifill is also the author of the forthcoming book The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama.
******
She even wrote a book about the idiot Obama! I can’t believe how badly the media is wanting McCain to lose. This will backfire. America will see that using Ifill is a setup for Obama.

Paul
When I post about Obama I become a fighter for freedom. There is no time for comedy when I read and listen to his false ideals and ludicrous presumptions about America. I strongly believe in the American Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
I saw the media jump all over President Bush and the Patriot Act, but it seems the media is tolerant to Obama and his supporters in Missouri.
After a thorough investigation, there is no doubt in backing and voting for

Gwen is an intelligent fair professional. She will conduct a fair debate. Palin is just an idiot- She needs to answer for her stupidity- this is for vp of the USA, not head coach of the cheerleading squad, moosehunt organizer or governor of a state that has a population less than most metropolitan towns. It is embarassing to hear her answers and a greater concern that people would even consider voting for her.
The media asked Palin questions that my daughter can answer and she is barely a teenager. When did we as a nation decide that this kind of candidate is all right for our country? It isn’t the media- The palin/mccain ticket has no problem using the media for advancing their own stupid, contradicting messages. If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen!
Putting parties aside, all americans should be concerned about this ticket, Palin’s lack of common sense and common world knowledge and McCain’s incomprehensive rants about almost every issue. They are an embarassment to our country.

Judge: “Paul, When I post about Obama I become a fighter for freedom. There is no time for comedy…”
Oh, get over yourself.
This is just an internet message board. Do you really have delusions of grandeur that you are “fighting for freedom” or having any significant impact here at all? If so, I gotta tell you, everyone here already knows who they are voting for.

Kakamun – you are right about Biden being in a tough spot.
And I fully expect Palin to “win” the veep debate.
Its easy to stick to talking points when that’s all you know, and you just memorized those talking points yesterday.

Listen Up, Please!
Palin does have creditability?????
It is hard for me to trust John McCain or the rest of his party because they continued to say until the “Nth” hour that the economy was sound and nothing is wrong and we’re is a good economy.
Look where we are now.
Palin is being strongly supported by McCain and his groupies. The same strength as their feelings about the economy. SCARY! SCARY! SCARY!
JUDGEMENT IN QUESTION!!!!!!!
Not in the real world. Don’t get it. Don’t understand. etc., etc., etc.,
Additional truth is: Got some key Republicans wanting her to drop out of the race.
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see Palin’s qualifications for Vice-President.
After the debate then what; this even if she loses or wins.
My grandaughter would have given a “magazine” answer. She reads teen magazines, sometimes reads our local newspaper for current events (not the comics, to my surprise.
Advice to John McCain: To raise up in the polls, get a partner that fits you style. Or, is this it?

reddog0216,
You obviously haven’t been paying attention to the bailout news.

You obviously did not read all my post that was stated earlier, rebutted what someone else said about McCain and the bill being a republican bill to start with.I also know how things went down and why they went down and I am glad they turned the first bill down!

WASHINGTON — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi paid her husband’s real estate and investment firm nearly $100,000 from her political action committee over the past decade, a practice that she voted to ban last year and that her party condemned as part of the “culture of corruption” when Republicans did it.

For real polling data – use sites like realclearpolitics.com that average out all the latest state and national polls.
Obama is way up nationally and more importantly in Colorado, Virginia, Penn, Mich, Ohio and Florida, and he’s within a point or 2 in Indiana and Missouri. If this keeps up, Dems win by a landslide.
2006 was just the beginning. The Reagan Era of corporate run government is drawing to a close. Thank God we’re closing this chapter in our history. There is still a ton of work to do, Free Markets left unchecked have crippled our economy and it will take many years to correct, but at least we are seeing the light and heading in the right direction.

Why does everyone still refer to Democracy Division, as Bi-Partisan? What about the Independent Group. Tri-Partisan would be the Fairest way to describe our County.
