The Obama Half Hour Variety Show
Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., attacks the ad as a premature self-coronation; Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., prepares to be live from Sunrise, Fla.
Our "GMA" report here:
Meanwhile, ABC — which is not airing the ad — tells viewers to watch "Pushing Daisies" instead.
"Wednesday, America, you have a choice," an ABC TV ad says. "Get political with the other networks, or enjoy the Emmy-winning drama full of surprising revelations: ABC’s ‘Pushing Daisies.’"
"As swipes go, it’s a pretty light-hearted one," writes Talking Points Memo’s Greg Sargent. "But telling viewers dismissively not to watch one of the two candidates make his case less than a week before the election seems like a pretty dodgy place for a network to go."

Yeah Jake
I have to say it is kind of strange that ABC is playing it the way they are…
doesn’t really notch up your gravitas so to speak…
it’s just weird.
Not to mention Daisies is…well…it’s not Heroes or Hill Street Blues. If people aren’t going to tune into the Obama night…they are going cable…not Pushing Daisies…oy

This isn’t risky….
Sure, there are some people who will drink Coke because they are annoyed by a Pepsi ad…
But we are not talking about some trivial decision.
These are high stakes. If Obama loses and we end up with 4 more years of nightmarish policies, we will all be in trouble.
And if you think in more general terms, about who seems to be a better leader…
You have McCain who has run a rinky-dink campaign of smears and gimmicks, and whose bid for the Whitehouse has degenerated into a lot of behind the scenes backstabbing.
Or Obama, who has run a professional campaign, built around solving real problems and inspiring hope.

Bill…
Hitler was a divisive speaker who hated minorities… Obama advocates cooperation and the American Dream.
The only thing they have in common is that both of them gave speeches and their supporters like their speeches. But McCain supporters like his speeches, too.
What a sad and tired comparison. It says nothing worthwhile, intelligent, or productive.
And considering that Hitler’s biggest fans were arrested for planning to kill Obama… it just doesn’t square up that he is a Nazi.

Ummm…no one would be watching Pushin Daisies even if Obama wasn’t on. Isn’t thy why ABC found themselves on the outside looking in? The network didn’t want to lose the already tiny audience by preempting the show. And by the time they wanted in the Obama campaign had already spent the ad money elsewhere.

(But Tuesdays won’t be all fun and frolic. All citizens taking a Tuesday off will be expected to pester other citizens into voting to re-elect Chairman Obama in 2012).

McCain was going to buy an infomercial, too. But they spent too much on Palin’s shoes. Spending 10,000 on makeup alone… now that’s a big ego.
Plus, McCain has more houses than he can remember.
If you want to talk about ego-tripping… owning 7 houses with 2 cars for each house, plus your own jet… that’s a big ego.
It was in the press a while back when McCain started screaming in a casino, “Do you know who I am!?!? Do you know who I am!?!?!” Because he felt that the other guests weren’t treating him with the proper deferrence.
Maybe Obama has a big ego… I don’t know. But McCain’s ego is absolutely legendary. (And Palin’s ego seems, increasingly, to come into conflict with McCain’s…)
As usual, they try to smear Obama with their own flaws.

I own a “real” small business – 3 retail kiosks in high end malls. Yesterday we had to lay off our 8 employees because our sales were getting worse and worse as the months went on. We have done this for 4 years but now my wife and I and our employees will be in the job market.
It is sad that george bush ever became president and I pray to god that mccain does not win. how we can offord to continue spending american money on an endless mindless war is mind boggling.
Jake says the people might be sick of seeing obama – never ever forget that we have witnessed the dismantling of the greatest nation on earth by an unqualified neo-con – i beg for our government to care about the people who go to work everyday to make this country what it once was. Why do we continue to act like that only the richest 5% should do well while the rest of us recede into the abiss that once was the United States of America?

This is a great venue for Obama – many people do not have the opportunity to go to a rally and see Obama. The sound bites doled out to the public by the media and the lies and smears from the Republican “machine” will be put to rest.
You will not hear negativity – you will hear a man with his honor and dedication determined to make America great once again.
Please vote next Tuesday.

Yes, spending that money does help the economy. And, quite literally, Obama has already reduced the federal deficit by $86 million by not requiring the feds to pay for his campaign (McCain of course pocketed the $86 million check from the feds).

Over 4000 brave soldiers killed 30,000 wounded. How many hundred thousand iraq’s killed?
By the time this war is over it is estimated that it will cost the us taxpayer 3 TRILLION DOLLARS. DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT COULD BE DONE WITH THAT MONEY?

Mike- WHY we went to war in Iraq? Quote from an AP story:
The last major remnant of Saddam Hussein’s nuclear program — a huge stockpile of concentrated natural uranium — reached a Canadian port Saturday to complete a secret U.S. operation that included a two-week airlift from Baghdad and a ship voyage crossing two oceans.
The removal of 550 metric tons of “yellowcake” — the seed material for higher-grade nuclear enrichment — was a significant step toward closing the books on Saddam’s nuclear legacy. It also brought relief to U.S. and Iraqi authorities who had worried the cache would reach insurgents or smugglers crossing to Iran to aid its nuclear ambitions

In OH, the last 10 polls have shown Obama in the lead.
In CO, the last 10 polls have shown Obama in the lead.

I doubt any one will be watching Obama as those who like his views already know them and those who dislike his views will certainly not watch. A long day for most working Americans and then coming home to watch more on the candidates is more than most can take. I find it ironic that Pushing Daises is on ABC….something very funny about that.
Of course the die hards will be watching and drooling over every word. He will save us…yaeah, the tidy bowl man has a better chance of saving us, there ain’t goin gto be any $$$ left in our economy to do the frand programs BO has pledged. If anyone thinks they are getting universal healthcare…hope you won’t be too disappointed.
Also any one have a problem with this 30 minute ad and the big party …that the money from the Benjamins(those who gave 5 bucks( is being spent this way??
Makes me very uncomfortable.
Posted by: I am so I can! | October 29, 2008, 2:05 pm 2:05 pm
I guess it depends on what Obama does during his show as to whether its a mistake or not. I mean he had to spend all the money on something after all. The problem is, the only people watching it will be Obama supporters. Seems to me its just a televised rally, which brings his supporteres, not the other guy’s. It will probably get good ratings, since there won’t be much else on just like his rallies, but I just can’t see people who are undecided or for McCain bothering to spend time watching. Most of us will be busy as usual paying bills, feeding kids, helping with homework, ferrying kids here n there, etc.

8:00 BARAK LIVE! (CBS, FOX, NBC) – A mysterious, inexperienced, first term Senator shows up in a TV studio and claims to be qualified to lead the free world. He also requests that Ned’s father skip work on Tuesday.

Finally, while candidates from either side surround themselves with retired whatever and show us their support on cable and HD news channels…where are the young people…those college students that worked their butts off…where is everyday nobody that worked those phone lines, sold those lawn signs and t-shirts, where is America…its about those thousands that show up at these events…its about you America hehehehheh

Left off is the part where ABC, noted both AP and WaPo, asked for the ad only a couple days ago, and the Obama camp said ‘too late, the funds have been allocated elsewhere.’
So now ABC is in the uncomfortable spot it tried to avoid at the last minute.
“Pushing Daisies” will lose its mostly Obama voting audience for the first half hour that it would have had if ABC accepted the ad when first proposed.
Ad rates will have to be adjusted for the drop.
That million bucks Obama was handing out would have been much nicer.

I wasn’t totally thrilled about Obama… but when look at how the McCain campaign has degenerated into a bunch of big egos fighting their own campaign for political survival… I am just glad that McCain IS losing.
Palin is already trying to blame McCain, and claim her place as the “future” of the GOP. McCain’s aides are already trying to paint Palin as a dunce and manipulator. McCain is trying to blame Bush, after embracing him. And other Republicans are planning on blaming them all.
They cannot lead us through these problems.
They are negative and destructive and divisive.

It didn’t work out with ABC. That’s okay.

Will Rev Wright open the show with a prayer?
“GD American!!!
America’s chiiickkkennnssssss, have come home to roost!”
“Now, let’s all pledge allegiance to Obama’s flag.”
Louis Farakhan, would you like to say a special prayer to our Messiah?”

It didn’t work out with ABC. That’s okay.
However, maybe it’s not okay with ABC?
The title, “The Obama Half Hour Variety Show,” gives me pause.
It’s best to overcome misunderstandings for the good of all.

Can’t you Republicans do anything but go negative?
Posted by: ziadora | October 29, 2008, 4:43 pm 4:43 pm
lol, ok please just stop this pity party. i realize you’re grasping at the last straws before the landslide Obama win on Nov 4th but jealousy is just a lousy, lousy thing.
give it up to the Senator. he’s buying airtime, so he can speak to YOU and everyone else on how he plans to move this country forward. when was the last time mccain talked about what he was going to do FOR YOU?
:) i love it!!!
another $10 for the Obama camp

voter in PA–don’t think I can watch the show, my TV’s not big enough for Obama’s ego.

Question: When was the last time McCain or Palin made a postive argument for *their* ticket?
All I hear from them are increasingly shrill attacks on, and smears of, Obama.
Is that what America needs right now? Nastiness and erratic, ineffective flailing?
It’s sad to say, but after this campaign McCain will return to the Senate with not a bit of dignity or integrity left. He didn’t have to go out like that.
As for Palin, she never had any dignity or integrity to begin with, so it’s a wash for her.

I’ll be watching ABC tonight.

Tapper, good of you to quote favorably from the hard left TPM on this matter.

Favorably?
Don’t you think a network has every right to encourage viewers to not watch commercial television on other networks?
It’s frightening that people think it’s dodgy.
Thank you ABC, for your independence.

To “The Dude Abides”
Love your comment -
“Wow. I seem to remember when there was an inexperienced, draft dodging, coke snorting, unintelligent guy from TX running 8 years ago.”
Yes, a small village in Texas has been missing their idiot for the past 8 years. Unfortunately, the idiot created world-wide havoc and now has blood on his hands. I guess the idiot was really a monster.

The audacity of Obama to cut into the World Series for his own purposes!!! He is a disgrace to this nation. Just like a dictator, he wants to take over the airwaves to promote his dream of turning the U.S. into a socialist, marxist country for HIS own good. It is OBAMA’S agenda he is working for, not yours.
He will take your hard earned money.. and spread YOUR wealth amongst the people who do not prefer to work. Is that something you want..? I certainly don’t..
I will definitely NOT be watching his Obama variety show.. what a joke.

I try to watch McCain and Palins speeches as well as Obamas. Listening to the dueling duo is depressing. Palin is getting better at speaking, but I keep hearing the name calling and it is such a turn off. Obama has gone from having socialist tendencies to being a socialist, communist and according to the Florida interviewer, a marxist. I have yet to hear Obama knock them personally, bring up the Keating 5 or McCains association with Khalidi’s Center for Palestine Research. I almost wish he would, but hopefully, he has more class.

Calm Down. No need to resort to every single piece of McCain-Palin propaganda in one paragraph.

“The audacity of Obama to cut into the World Series for his own purposes!!! He is a disgrace to this nation. Just like a dictator,…”
Did it ever occur to you that he paid (a lot) for that time. The networks could have said no (like ABC did) but they didn’t. They took the money like good capitalistic companies do. So stop your yapping and watch the show. Maybe you’ll learn something…like what the definition of Socialism is.

Of course, only people who prefer not to work are poor. There isn’t a single person out there who works long, hard, hours who holds a low-paying job. Every poor person has made the decision to sit at home, not work, and be poor.
Get off your soapbox. The way you sound, you probably earn a low-enough income to benefit from Obama’s economic policy. Could you define marxism for me?
