Tough Crowd for Obama at Cape Fear BBQ and Chicken*
In Fayetteville, NC, today, at Cape Fear BBQ and Chicken, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., was greeted by a 54-year-old woman shouting "Socialist! Socialist! Socialist! Get out of here!"
The woman, Diane Fanning, who works at a Sam’s Club, was one of the many in the older and largely white crowd eating lunch after church services.
Sitting next to Fanning, Lenox Bramble, 76, gave her an angry look at her.
“Be civil, be courteous,” he said. He later told a reporter he’s voting for Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and doesn’t think Obama has enough experience.
Another diner, Cecilia Hayslip, 61, yelled back at Fanning, “At least he’s not a war-monger!”
Obama came to the long table where Fanning was eating with fellow congregants from the local First Presbyterian church.
Obama held out his hand to her.
“How are you, ma’am?” he asked.
She refused to shake his hand.
She also immediately asked him about the "North American Union."
Obama assured her that there are no plans to create a common government between Mexico, the U.S. and Canada.
“I know some people have been hearing rumors about it," Obama said. "But as far as I can tell that’s just not something that’s happening. We would never give up our sovereignty in that way.”
He asked her if she had any other questions.
Restraining herself, Fanning said, “No, I’m not going to say it.”
“Well I appreciate that,” Obama responded.
Obama spoke with other, friendlier members of the congregation about health care, Social Security, and taxes.
Fanning explained their courtesy to a reporter, saying, “Some of ‘em are just nicer than I am. I know how some of ‘em think.”
The reception in this Red state diner was decidedly mixed.
“You’re doing a great job," Betty Waylett, 76, told Obama. Waylett’s a Republican but says she plans to vote for Obama.
Pastor Randal Bremer, also at the table, relayed that Obama told him, “Whether you vote for me or not I’ll need your prayers.”
"I’m very impressed by his ability to meet people on a down-to-earth level," said Bremer, who plans to vote for McCain because he prefers smaller government and McCain’s position on the Iraq war. "I don’t want to see (recent gains made in Iraq) damaged by a premature pull-out," he said.
To an older white man who said he’s supporting McCain, Obama said, "Just because they’re voting for McCain doesn’t mean I can’t shake your hand,” Obama said to him as the man accepted his handshake. "Everybody’s going to have to come together after the election to get things done," the Democratic presidential nominee continued. "We’re all Americans. We all got to work together and John McCain is a good man.”
Nearby some others expressed something less than unbridled enthusiasm for Obama.
“I’m surprised, but I’m not going to say anything else,” said Pat Smith.
A group of six retired women, mostly Democrats, said they remained undecided.
“I have to pray about it, think about what’s best for our country,” said one of them, Dorothy Buie.
Fanning was aware of the endorsement Obama received today from Gen. Colin Powell (Ret.) but was unimpressed. “Colin Powell is a RINO, R-I-N-O, Republican In Name Only," she said.
Obama and his aides ordered to go chicken, collards, baked beans, slaw and wings. The tab was $13.91.

I am pretty sure you have friends, relatives and as my grandmother always tells me treat others as you would like others to be treated. You do not know Obama it is only what was said by McCain that you are going by. I am so pissed off.

I believe these folks DO know what a Socialist is. Why don’t we hear more about Barry Obama from his maternal grandmother? Why isn’t she out there on the campaign trail like John McCain’s mother Roberta? Barry’s grandmother was a Vice President of a bank. What about Barry at Punahou school? Where was Barry when his mom was dying? Can’t people see beyond the image machine to understand the ruthless ambition behind Barry Obama? Why are the American people of all colors so blind?

So when Diane Fanning is eligible to collect her Social Security checks in a few years, she is going to yell
Socialist, Socialist, get out of here!” and refuse to accept them? This country has many examples of socialist policies already in place that constitute redistributing the wealth– Social Security, Medicare, sales taxes, highway taxes, etc. Fanning is simply regurgitating the current Republican talking points which are specifically designed to inflame such ignorant people.

Refusing to shake the extended hand of a Presidential candidate who was acting gracious and respectful towards someone with a dissenting opinion.
This is the kind of rampant incivility the McCain campaign has been fostering and that an Obama presidency would go a long way towards ending.

I am so worn out with this charge of “socialist”. Most people that use it have only the vaguest idea what that term means. Do they understand the social programs that so may count on such as Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid could be considered socialist? But as long as the world is full of mean-spirited, selfish, and ignorant people, some social safety nets must be legislated in order for us to have a civilized society. Thank God the majority of people can see the benefit of cooperation and standards of fairness in the large and diverse country that we are.

Goverment election money is not “welfare” like Obama is proposing by spreading the wealth. It is a choice most people make on their tax return to give $3 to the presidential election fund. Seems if more democrates knew anything about taxes you wouldnt’ be voting to “spread the wealth” and could understand that if corporate taxes increase, jobs will be cut, product costs will increase. 40% of americans pay no taxes, the other 55% won’t need a tax cut if they are unemployed. Do your research, democrats prey on the stupid.

She is the perfect example of the mentality created by the absolutely disgusting campaign waged by the McCain/Palin campaign, and who shouldn’t be allowed the privilege of voting. When this election is over, and the lives of Americans do get better under the guidance of Sen. Obama, Sarah Palin will just continue to be a flash-in-the-pan comedic joke, and John McCain will see his life change quite a bit after the outright lies and devisive, inappropriate, two-faced, negative campaign he has allowed to be waged in his name. His own party is ashamed of him. He lost my vote with the very first negative word out of HER mouth.

Welcome to the tone of the McCain campaign. Hegemonic tone. You know Obama has had to deal with many barriers in his life and that is what makes him a strong person. Rather than bitter, Obama rises above these sad comments. Obama is such a good kind and compassionate person and God will take care of him. Talk about grace, Obama demonstrated that today. He refused to allow this woman’s hatred get in the way of respecting her has a human being and I admire that so so much. McCain and Palin need to learn this sort of grace!

Over the last 25 years most of the middle class wealth has been transferred to the riches 2%. We need to give the middle class an opportunity to bring back some of that wealth. Why do republicans think it is okay to transfer the wealth to the rich, but to move some of that wealth back to those who do most of the work socialism. The funny part, most of the republicans don’t have a clue about what is really happening. They all think in their minds that they are included those top 2% of the wealthiest, when in fact they are the pawns of rich. What is wrong with making it easier for the middle class to acquire wealth. Over the years of republican control, this country has made it easier for the rich to get richer on the back of the middle class. They have just raided the middle class pension plans of trillions of dollars. That’s not socialism, that fairness.

I suspect Mrs. Fanning does not know what a socialist is. And if she does, she doesn’t realize her beloved Republican party will go down in the history books as conducting the largest move toward socialism since ? FDR.

Excellent points.
I would add that it doesn’t speak well for the Republican party or the McCain-Palin campaign that many of their supporters can’t disagree without being disagreeable. And what exactly does Diane Fanning think socialism is? Most successful developing countries have elements of socialism, including the U.S.
If we have a failing economy and continue to borrow money to spend revenue that we don’t have, it won’t really matter how we label ourselves.

Press Release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sunday, October 19, 2008
CUMBERLAND COUNTY BOARD OF ELECTIONS PROVIDES AID TO OBAMA CAMPAIGN
RALEIGH—North Carolina Republican Party Chairman Linda Daves released the following statement in response to the Cumberland County Board of Elections expanding hours at two additional polling sites specifically for the purpose of aiding Senator Barack Obama’s rally in Fayetteville today. (“Cumberland County adds two new polling sites,” Fayetteville Observer, 10/18/08)
“It is a gross distortion of the voting process for the Democrat-controlled Cumberland County Board of Elections to expand the number of early polling locations at the last minute to accommodate Senator Obama’s campaign rally. Their action makes the voting process an extension of a partisan political rally and that is clearly inappropriate.
“With the many unanswered questions surrounding Senator Obama’s extensive relationship with ACORN along with the ongoing investigations in numerous states into the organization by election officials and by the FBI, the North Carolina Republican Party finds it astounding that additional voting locations were made available at an ‘emergency meeting’ without adequate notice to the general public. Barack Obama will say or do anything to win.

The churches are excited about the early voting, but disappointed they wont be able to make the Obama rally as a result.

In McCain’s prepared remarks for the last few days and the talking points distributed by his campaign have McCain’s advisers attacking Obama’s refundable tax credits as “welfare,” “socialism,” and a “govenrment giveaway,” even though–as countless observers have noted:

Freaks are people to even though they are outcasts. Even freaks can run for office look at Reagan. The thespian acted his way into convincing Russia that he was crazy and would push the red button at a moments notice. What made Reagan a great President was that he played to his strengths. McCain doesn’t do that anymore, he hasn’t work across the party lines since he lost in 00′ to Bush.

To Eyes Wide Opened,
If you knew anything about corporate taxes, then you would know that the corporations tax rate is based on the amount of net revenue earned. The ceiling on corporate tax is 38%. Also, depreciation expense is taken off first, then you have a great many other deductibles. A corporation will reduce the amount paid when they have a losing year, by the amount paid on taxes the two previous years. Also, a corporation only have to pay taxes on $1 mil of its executive’s salary if it can show that the rest is based on performance. Therefore, corporations have many loopholes to reduce their taxes. Those loopholes allows the corporations to pay less taxes on average than many individuals. So before you start spouting off about the corporations paying so much taxes, then you should get the facts. Those that I mentioned are just a few of the corporation’s tax reductions.
A small business can file their taxes as personal income of the owner or file it under the business. Again, either way they receives many tax deductions and it has been proven by many that the number of small businesses in the US taxable income over $250,000 is about 1%. So, again get the facts first.
Always remember, Knowledge is Power, and Ignorancy Deems You Powerless.

Ms. Fanning wouldn’t shake hands with Mr. Obama because he is a black man. It’s really that simple. I grew up around people like Ms. Fanning. Once they are taught fear and prejudice as children, I don’t think anything can change them.
Sadly, the “undecided” elderly folks while polite, most likely harbour the same racial prejudice as Ms. Fanning.
Anyone who thinks these kind of folks live only in the South are deceiving themselves. For the good of the country, I hope most of the people like Ms. Fanning decide to just be mad and sit out the election. That’s what my brother (whose only son served in Iraq and who cannot stand the thought of four more years of Republican rule) intends to do. I told my brother in a way, my vote for the Obama/Biden ticket counts as two votes since he is abstaining. He told me he is glad I voted for Sen. Obama, but he just can’t bring himself to do it. Now they are throwing around the word socialist like he has some kind of demonic disordy. This too will backfire. McCain is behind in the polls and is trying to win an election on hate, deceit and innuendo.I don’t know what God McCain prays to, but he should be on his knees praying for guidance and forgiveness. Socialist, Really?,
Social Security’s original intention was not as welfare redistribution, it was as forced savings. It did turn, however, into welfare redistribution later.
We can have a Social Security system where people get out what they put into it when they retire. Nothing wrong with that, and it’s not socialist. But when you put in more than you get back if you’re wealthy, but get more back then you put in when you’re poor…..that’s socialism pure and simple.
And yes, Obama is a socialist. Come to grips with it. Everyone knows this, no one will report on it. “Spread the wealth” was not a gaffe, it was a slip revealing Obama’s true mindset.

John Mccain has always been for the rich and his attacks these days are becoming increasingly polarising. Thomas Jefferson proposed that when someone dies, their entire estate should be forfeited to the government for the benefit of all. Socialist Really?,
Read my post again. I very plainly said that Social Security is now a socialist program, though that wasn’t it’s original intention. It’s original intention was FORCED SAVINGS.
But the point you are trying to make, I think, is this. Even here in America we have some programs that are socialist in nature. And yes, it’s true. Our tax structure itself is redistributive.
However, you have to understand the ideological mindsets by which we have higher tax rates for the wealthy. For the average American, it’s a matter of practicality. In order to properly fund government, we need to tax the wealthier at a higher tax rate because it would break the back of the poorer. This is a matter of PRACTICICALITY NOT IDEOLOGY.
Obama, on the other hand, said during a speech that such taxing of the wealthy at higher rates was a matter of JUSTICE. It’s not that this was needed for practical reasons, but that it is his IDEOLOGICAL VIEWPOINT.
And that is why Obama is a socialist. Redistributive justice requires income redistribution.
Sorry, Obama is a socialist to the core. And I’m very happy this is finally getting media attention – thanks to a plumber with the guts to ask the tough questions the media won’t.

Nope I am not. Socialist is the precursor to Communism. It is the transformation from a capitalist society to a communist society. And in that transformation is the creation of a collective society to redistribute the wealth own by the people. There fore all work is the same, everybody is paid the same, and nobody truly owns anything because the society owns it.

MM,
At the stage of Socialism there are still ownership rights. It is only at the Communist stage that ownership ceases to exist. Incidentally, according to Marx, even women would be common property at the Communist stage!
But that is beside the point, Socialism existed before Marx. Marx tried to shuffle socialism as a stage to his Communism, but most Socialists don’t agree with this.
There is Socialism in Europe, and some parties blatantly bear the name.

Posted by: MM | October 19, 2008, 4:59 pm 4:59 pm
Ja,
I’ll be honest with you. I would have no real problem with a little wealth spreading. I work hard, two jobs in fact, and I pay a whole lot in taxes.
However, I see the Obama plan much differently than you do, obviously. I don’t see it as socialist, I see it as helping the middle class, of which I am luckily a part.
As to Joe, he walked up to Obama and pretty much lied about who he was and what he was planning to do.
A. The business he is talking about is not for sale.
B. If the business was for sale, well he wouldn’t be able to buy it anyway, frozen credit markets and all.
I could go on but I need to go to work, but I truly believe the guy is a plant from the McCain campaign. It just seems like the kind of underhanded trick they would pull.
Peace out.

You still haven’t define socialism accurately and you know it. Under your definition any president who has ever given a tax cut is a socialist. That is about every President elected to the office.

hey MM – Wow he called McCain out at his own rally surrounded by people who already support him. Gee that took stones.
How bout using some of that cash to run TV commercial saying
“I am not a socialist Mr. McCain and I resent the way you try to denegrate myself and my supporters w/ false accusations that strike fear into many Americans and keep our minds off real issues, like your voting for Bush’ War in Iraq that cost the lives of 4,000 plus troops and $700 billions + interest payments on the loans to from the Chinese Communists.”
Is that too much to ask.

MM,
Here is a post I made from before spelling out why Obama is a socialist:
Posted by: ja | October 19, 2008, 5:04 pm 5:04 pm
Most of the European Union are socialist and they are kicking our dollar’s butt with the Euro.
Socialism ain’t such a bad deal, but of course you will try to make it so.
Anyway, we aren’t anywhere near becoming socialist. Free Market will continue to exist and flourish.
Obama isn’t a socialist and McCain isn’t a crazy, delusional, erratic old man who will kill us all with his angry uncontrollable temper…hopefully.

Can’t say anything to get Mr. Obama upset.
Posted by: Missy | October 19, 2008, 5:06 pm 5:06 pm
What is wrong with Socialism,
I agree that there isn’t something inherently evil about Socialism. But I disagree with you and think that Obama is an incrementalist – someone who wants to edge us toward Socialism.
So why not just be honest. They have Socialism in Europe, they’re doing pretty well these days. Obama also is of the European Socialist mindset.
Report the truth and let the people decide.
Do we want a European form of Socialism? If so, vote Obama.

Again you are cherry picking around the truth and talking points of McCain camp. Obama never said it was a matter of justice but patriotic to pay taxes. Another thing Obama is not even raising taxes he is getting rid of the Bush tax cuts to pay for the tax cuts on middle class, because the middle class not the wealthy is the driving force of the economy. The sooner you get that logic in your head the sooner you can stop with the socialist nonsense. He is not changing tax policy to make literal equal pay for everybody, he is giving the middle class a break so they can spend and that spending will lead to a overall net increase in money in the market because poor and middle class people have a higher propensity to spend then the upper rich class do.

I will grudgling vote for Obama but it seems like people here are mad because she chose not to put on a fake smile for the camaras or crowd and said what she felt. What do you think I am going to say? that you are racist? Sorry to disappoint, I don’t think racism will play any significant role in this election, at least I hope not.
I suspect you don’t like Obama because you are a conservative. I suspect you are anti-gay, anti-abortion, anti-fill in the blank.
As to most of the poster’s on this and other blogs, we are all pretty far to each of our perspective sides and do not accurately represent the mostly middle of the road Americans.
what I really hope is that most people do vote issues and don’t believe all the vicious lies about any of these people.
I think Obama and McCain have both been dehumanized by each sides supporters and frankly it does a disservice to us all.

MM,
I am not cherry-picking anything. At a rally Obama said that higher taxes for the wealthy was the “right” (=just) thing to do. Not out of practicality, but out of justice.
Obama is a Socialist, the sooner you accept it the sooner we can have an honest discussion about the pros and cons of Socialism – and therefore whether we should or shouldn’t support Obama.

MM,
You act as if there’s only one form of Socialism out there. There are many, there is large disagreement among Socialists about what the true form is.
However, they all share one thing in common: Redistributive Justice. Both of those are key words. Redistribution from one class to another. And doing such as a matter of JUSTICE (ideology) not practicality.

So Chuck Todd said a month or so ago that by this time in October we would know who was going to win, because whoever was ahead in the polls would be getting the bulk of the early vote, which seems to be Obama, and therefore would win the election.
Yet, old Chuckles is now saying this race is wide open. Let us ponder the reasons for that…hmmmm…could it be they want it to look like it is closer than it is for ratings? No, the liberal elite, lefty media wouldn’t do that, would they?

Posted by: ja | October 19, 2008, 5:23 pm 5:23 pm
Let’s review the facts:
1) The Bush Administration is nationalizing banks, i.e., socialism.
2) McCain wants the US government to spend $300 billion to buy (i.e., socialize) private mortgages.
3) Obama’s tax plan raises the marginal tax rate of incomes over $250,000 from 36% to 39%, i.e., 3%.
Yet Obama is a socialist?
This nonsense is a consequence of McCain’s outright lies. He is a shameful human being for polluting the public discourse solely to further his naked ambition.

Yes I watch that entire 5 minute clip while he was talking to Steve (his real first name), he told him that the middle class was feeling the burden of the Bush tax cuts and not receiving anything except unemployment. The statement was a jab at president Bush for doing nothing for the middle class. If we got money to give to the rich, we should have money to give to the middle class the people that ultimately can pull the economy out of a recession. By the way that is a proven fact of economics.

BREAKING NEWS, Joe Biden declares that “undecided people” are RACISTS. I kid you not.
Yep folks, for the first time in history, we are finding out, according to Joe “foot in my mouth” Biden, that Undecided voters have apparently always been racists. OMG, what did they do in all these other elections if there wasn’t somone to be racist against?
We appreciate Joe letting us know his team Obama and Democratic Elites that they have such an opinion about undecided voters. I guess Joe is hoping to use the same tactic that made him come around to protecting and supporting Clarence Thomas and his hoping many are as weak minded and easily as intimidated as HE.
at a Fundraiser in San Fran last night.
“”Undecided people are having a difficult time just culturally making the change, making the move for the first African American president in the history of the United States of America,” the Democratic vice-presidential nominee said at a San Francisco fundraiser Saturday evening.”

I don’t think you thought that particular statment through. You can’t defend McCain and bring into question Obama’s intellectual upbringing.
McCain finished at the bottom of his class. McCain was a hot headed, party hard doof until his unfortunate incarceration. At which point, rather doing anything on his own merit, he dumped his crippled wife and he married a barbie doll with money and bought his way to the top.

To say that he is racist by supporting an incredibly intelligent and capable candidate- who is one half white and one half African American, is like saying a white man is racist for supporting another white man.
What nonsense. Why would even a white person endorse the war mongering white John McCain and his white inept Moose Killer from Wasilla? Bigotry? Ignorance? You betcha.

McCain’s statement That Obama’s “spreading around the wealth” is socialism-is disengenous and and false. His intention is that the very wealthy-the top 1%-who will pay LESS taxes under McCain’s plan-will pay MORE. Right now most tax dollars come from the middle class-NOT the very wealthy. It’s a fact. Maybe Mrs. Fanning should have a talk with her pastor, who might tell her, that Jesus would not tell another human being to “get out of here.”
She says she belonds to the First Presbyterian Church? I don’t think they teach that type of anger and hate.
I don’t believe she even knows what “socialist” means. She might remember that the first Christians were more or less “socialists.”
Her hatred of someone who is not like herself can only be called one thing. Bigotry.

Colin Powell is an incredibly intelligent person who made a huge mistake in believing the Bush/Cheney lies. That led him to give his United Nations speech in which he accused Iraq of having weapons of mass destruction.
Bigotry? Ignorance? You betcha.

I already pay higher taxes than I used to. Only, now I’m in a much better position to handle it (without starving). With the current deficit (brought on by republican “stimulus” packages, tax breaks for the super rich, deregulation of banking, unnecessary war, etc.) we are practically bankrupt. Now they expect responsible taxpayers to pay for their failed policies. The republicans already socialized us–but we don’t get the benefits…they’ve socialized their debt. And don’t blame it on the Dems in congress for the the last 2 years. It took 8 years to sew these seeds, and the democrats have been fought on every positive measure to turn this around.

Out of all of the comments by the people and all media outlets…I just have very powerful fact to note: There is only 1 race. The human race. There is not a race of dogs, whales or chickens, just different shapes, sizes, origins, etc. Please stop the huge mistake of saying black race, white race, etc. It’s separatist period. The spoken word connotation of the word “race” implies a competition. Just read your modern day Biology/DNA info.
For you all that say it is time to progress and accept the diverse world cultural differences and nationalities of people (African, Japanese, Irish– Can be born and solely raised in America), and embrace our commonalities, please do us all justice and admit that there is only 1 human race.
Lastly, America is such a diverse, sexpot full of centuries of people who have solely lived here but denied their multi-cultural heritage. Just start to look more closely at others…you will be so surprised at how somebody different from you can actually LOOK like you. Thank You.

To portia9 – actually, you should read the Chicago Tribune’s endorsement. It explains how Obama actually comes out of the University of Chicago’s economic school that favors free markets, which has actually ruffled many Democratic constituencies. He’s no socialist. A tax break for the middle class is just that – it means you still have to work to get that break. And it means those super rich con artists who have been raking in the profits will finally have to pull their own weight. I’m a hard working middle class mom & I’ve seen our wages stagnate, while we’re all working harder and everything costs more and more – meanwhile those guys are buying multiple yachts. But I think what is most striking about this article is the calm and confident and courteous way Obama interacted with those he knew disagreed with him. He doesn’t insulate himself from those who disagree, or even hate, him or his policies. He wants to continue to engage and isn’t ruffled by those who rebuff him. He doesn’t just “preach to the choir” he tries to talk and listen to everyone. By contrast, McCain & Palin have highly controlled events and refuse to engage with any voters who disagree with them. And their followers have learned to do the same – shouting insults instead of debating issues. This country needs to come together. Clearly from this article, Obama understands that.

I am quite humored by the “Obama is a socialist” post throughout this Blog:
This notion comes from Obama’s “refundable tax credits” as “welfare,” “socialism,” and a “govenrment giveaway,” as McCain/Palin talking points tell you and many of you have taken as gospel.
So if a “refundable tax credit” is considered socialism, what do you call this from your candidate?
McCain’s own health care plan also includes a “REFUNDABLE TAX CREDIT!” ?..?

McCain’s a socialist. McCain’s an inept socialist. I’ve lost all respect for him. He is undeserving. McCain/Palin turned into nasty rats. Trying to lie their way to the White House, stirring up racial hatred, etc. Dividing a United States of America. Trying to roll everyone back to 1960. We’re going forward. They are not leaders. Obama/Biden offer real leadership. McCain/Palin are domestic terrorists with their lies, deceit, robo calls, and KKK rallies without sheets.
Obama’s plan is best. This is what happened last time we did what Obama’s proposing.
· Every Republican senator opposed Clinton’s tax increase on the “rich.” They said it would cost Americans jobs, ruin small businesses, slow down the economy and increase unemployment
o Instead, what happened was the lowest combined rates of unemployment and inflation in 30 or more years, 22 million new jobs, and deficits as far as the eye could see turned into budget surpluses (the first since 1969), all producing the longest period of prosperity and expansion in United States history.
Now go ahead and try to lie and fight about the facts. You can’t. It’s history. It’s a fact.

That’s 8 years of redistribution of wealth, give it to the rich, the foreign countries and big corporations.

the Democratic Party can’t understand why they can’t get 95% of the vote when they promise 95% of the people a tax break. when someone tells Sen. Obama “I’m voting for Sen. McCain,” all he can say is, “but why? I’m cutting your taxes!” you see, like liberals who love America as well, lots of conservative Americans, good Americans, smart Americans, have a not unfounded idea that big government isn’t going to improve the middle-class’s life. While it may get you welfare, it will be at the cost of higher prices and getting you thrown in the unemployment line.

Whatever the woman’s belief on McCain or Obama, she should at least be civil. What I find most interesting is that she had just got out of church. Doesn’t the church teach love?
If the GOP goes down this election, we will know why. It has let itself be hijacked by right-wing evangelicals who profess God’s love “in name only” – or I as I like to call them, CINO – christian in name only.

Last week McCain said he has learned from history. So I must ask, then why is he rehashing Hillary Clinton’s campaign down to the last gasp?
He hit racism last week. This week he is now a “man of the people.”
First of all, he has never been middle class and so he has no real understanding of the needs of the middle class. He can SAY anything he wants, it doesn’t make it so.
It didn’t work for Hillary and she had more actual history to back her up, after all she was a democrat.
I find it deeply amusing that McCain has decided to run as the democrat in the race. He labeled Obama a socialist so he could be the democratic candidate.
Lame.

This is so sad. The racial cultural attitudes over so many years have instilled in many people a fear, hate, anger, rudeness, racial prejudice, violence against fellow man, etc. Racial hate is alive and present in the southern states. I ask were these people just returning from church services?? I see a minister is there. I can not comprehend how someone who is religious and believes in God can be racially prejudiced. My church teaches love thy neighbor, do unto others as you would like to be treated.
The culture in that town, or that area of that town, or the particular people who eat at that diner are definitely racist. This group of people seem to approve of any person who says they are racist.
What has John McCain done??? Lots!! Socialist??? Ha, not hardly, we already are – government just invested in the banks. Read your books. We indeed are in some ways but we will never progress to total socialist ways.
The hate is quite apparent!! This rudeness is result of John McCain and Sarah Palin. Each person probably got one of those robocalls too.
The rudeness is sad! I am sorry they are so unhappy with their lives.
I am so glad I don’t live there. I am caucasian, but don’t have patience for racial, age, gender intolerance in 2008. This is America and we are much better than this.

You know i was scared Mccain may come back but with this inconsistency, he will never come back. Now I know Powell’s endorsement rattled him. Even the uneducated will smell a FAKE. He cant stick to a message. He tangled himself to Joe the plumber, next find out Joe the Plumber is a middle-class who will benefit under Obama’s tax policy and now he now wants to be Obama. He tried to run on experience, it wasn’t working, next change, it isn’t, now he wants to be the custodian of the middle-class. Mccain has lost it.

Do you really think we will ever have national health care in this country?
Not going to happen under any president. All we can hope for is that McCain’s nutty plan doesn’t go into place or we are all scr##ed. If you have a pre-existing condition say bye bye to affordable health insurance.
If you have employee health coverage, say bye bye to that too. They no longer have an incentive to provide it.
McCain’s health plan should be enough to make him lose, forget everything else.

In Canada & Europe, the healthcare system serves far more citizens for less money with better care.
The ones most against a national health care system are insurance companies.

Then they find they can’t make the payments leaving the banks to a foreclosure. That’s what made the economy bad. If the economy was that bad thousands would be out of work in every state. rodney,
that is true as far as it goes, but the rise in malpractice insurance is related to two main factors. 5% of the doctors are the cause of most of the claims, and taking their licenses away seems to be difficult. Secondly, insurance companies make most of their money from investments, not from premiums. Bad investing by insurance companies is a big contributor to the cost.
All that aside, malpractice insurance amounts to about 3.2 percent of the average physicians revenues.

Mike Weston:
John McCain served his country and deserves credit for that, just like any other veteran, and particularly all POWs. But he was neither a remarkable Pilot nor a remarkable Senator, and his military service DOES NOT qualify him for the Presidency.
You have to have your head in the sand to believe thatMcSame is the best candidate for President in this election, even if you are a Republican who is anything short of a Bush/Rove NeoCon.
President Obama will have to spend most of his first term digging out of the mess made by George W. Bush and the republican majority he enjoyed during 75% of his presidency. But even with that burden, he will be a better, more competent leader and problem solver than John McCain could ever hope to be.
As a Vietnam Veteran, I am tired of hearing that John McCain is a hero, when he has opposed efforts to ease the transition to civilian life for our newest veterans. Not to mention his capitulation on torture.

That is why there are more doctors groups instead of individual practices. The HIGH cost of malpractice insurance forces them to group together. The problem with health care is the Insurance companies with their obscene profits, and then the companies who supply hospitals with such high cost supplies.

McCain’s will make it much harder for older and ill Americans to even get insurance. It is a horrible plan.
Also, it will remove the incentive for our employers to provide insurance.
Obama’s plan, will just make insurance cheaper for all of us. However, I am not sure how we are supposed to be able to pay for it. I would like more info on that aspect.

Businesses and their attorneys are far more likely to file frivolous claims than the average American. I believe with my heart that McCain with all he has gone through in government trying to take on all of the big spenders and pork users must have told Palin what she was in for. Anyone with a weak disposistion would have declined the offer. The fact she accepted knowing the fight she was going to be getting into tells me she is a woman that has what it takes to lead. I like that she hasn’t been Washington corrupted and truly desires a change in how things are done. We desperately do need change not just in which party is in control, but in how government is run. That is why I think McCain has the best chance for that change.

A Veteran–
Well I respect your honesty, though I couldn’t disagree with you more on Palin.
Everything I have learned about her scares the heck out me. She seems about as corrupt as they get in my humble opinion. I think McCain lacked some serious judgment in this pick.
Again, though I disagree, I totally respect your decorum on this page today.

I say to you that this is exactly what our right to vote is all about. If that is what makes your mind up on a candidate, I applaud you. At least it isn’t because she is either republican or democrat. I would suggest you google Ken Moyes Blog and take a look at it. He has a lot of what I believe to be more truthful information and websites to back it up. My thanks to you for your opinion also and I also respect you for yours.

Senator Obama and Biden are spreading division and uncertainty among the middle and lower income group. His statement “Share the Wealth” simply means he will take from the hard workers and give back to the irresponsible people. Much of the legislation he passed while a state senator was that very thing. He certainly did not create new jobs in his district. In fact, they lost 11% of the jobs in the 8 years he was the senator. He is as greedy as can be–$300,000 handout from Rezko–and no taxes paid and no “Share the Wealth”.
Posted by: Mary | October 19, 2008, 10:10 pm 10:10 pm
Ryan C. You are so wrong. Yes, Rezko helped pay for Obama’s house but not the extra lot. Obama didn’t have enough money to buy it. Didn’t you listen to his story on television showing his deals with Rezko? And showing his house? Get a grip. Obama couldn’t buy that house. When he got out of college he had no money. Rezko offered him a job at his law firm.

“Rezko helped pay for Obama’s house but not the extra lot.”
No he did not. Rezko’s wife bought the adjoining lot and sold 1/6th of it for 1/6 of the price she paid for it.
The Obamas got a mortgage just like many other people.
Meanwhile, did Cindy McCain ever pay the 4 years in back taxes on the Coronado condo?

Does anyone have an idea how the Palin’s paid for their house in Alaska or who built it? There is no record of this, because Sarah made sure of that. Sarah is about as corrupt as they come. Todd Palin said that he and some buddies built their $500,000 house. Isn’t it odd that there are no accounts of a building permit filed. This house was built before the sports complex was built and probably by the same contractor. Which by the way, the land the complex is on is still in litigation, because they didn’t have clear title to build in the first place. Sarah is always talking about Obama and Ayers, we need to discuss the association of her husband with the AIP. No wonder she is so good at inciting her rally’s, she has learned it first hand from attending Todd’s rally’s at the succession conventions that she has attended.

I think Obama has to explain his relationships with Ayres, Rezko and Wright.

“One thing is for sure now that Obama has raked in 150 MILLION dollars. He no longer has ANY EXCUSE for not retiring Hillary’s debt, as he stated he would. However, to my mind, doing so would be no recompense for his stabbing her in the back, as he so very publicly did. Yes, he has real class, maybe in Chicago.” Yavo Lem

Some of which was used to “buy” the votes of delegates in the Democratic primaries…
Some of which was spent to pay off the posters of anti-Hillary slurs, and to make sure the heat of racism was kept forever in play.
Now, in addition to attack of constant commercials on the air and even in video games, funds used to pay bloggers to denigrate McCain with hurtful epitaphs of age….. and to put down Palin and her family because of her attempts to quash the trooper who tazered his eleven year old son!
Enormous amounts of money are spent also in suppressing stories about his involvement with Acorn and Ayers, and Rezko and , Khalidi, Odinga, and Farrakhan. For the moment, and until the election, Jeremiah will stay relatively quiet in his multi-million dollar retirement hide-a-way…..
Of course, the press has made it easy for him since the days of Hillary.
You remember the states she won towards the end?
There were days I had to get my information about percentages and actually numbers…. from the BBC!
What is happening here?

1 end the war
2 health care for uninsured children
3 restore america’s standing in the world
4 tax cut for 95% of people including joe the plumber (if he buys that business and splits profits with another owner/worker as it is a 2 man shop)
5 get young people engaged in politics and service
6 a qualified VP just in case
–
I’d vote for that.

I’m worried that the Republicans are going to try to pick up their ball and go home if they lose this election.

“Many Real Americans dont like Obama or his plans for the country, Obama is not going to win NC unless he does some voter fraud.”
What the are these real Americans? Do they live in the real America? Small towns with zero diversity in either people or ideas? Do I have to deny evolution, global warming, and homosexuals of their rights to be a real American? Do I also have to be a member of a dying party?

I agree. Do you think the Obama campaign can quit throwing gasoline on the fire he has been building since before the primaries?
Probably not. That is too bad. By January, even if he wins, he will not be able to govern because his wingnut supporters will have to go under the bus and then he is left with no base.

An interesting thing to say, considering one COULD argue that the GOP won the last two Presidential elections by *gulp* voter fraud.
Posted by: DP | October 20, 2008, 11:07 am 11:07 am
Len… What are you talking about?
Republicans love to talk about how Obama supporters will riot if they lose. Just because Obama is black… it doesn’t mean that Obama supporters will riot… or that they are lower than Republicans. This is all just negative stereotypes.
On the other hand, you have out of control behavior at Republican rallies… where people chant “terrorist” and “kill him!” I spent most of my life voting for Republican candidates… and I have never seen this sort of behavior from Republicans. It is right to judge people based on bad behavior.
Acting and speaking violently are really bad things.
It is really dishonest to posit some equivalency between your negative stereotypes of blacks against the outlandish actions of McCain supporters. You imagine that blacks and Democrats are acting terribly… but in reality, Republicans actually are.

It’s sad that young lady would say things like with the country in the shape it’s in. I wonder if she ask the customers at sam’s club if they are democrats, republicans or rino when they come to spend their money. If she has nothing good to say she she she should say nothing at all. I will try and locate at sam’s club to see id she would shake my hand; i am a soldier. Some shallow folks think that Cloin Powell endorsed Obama because he’s black, black people have been voting for years for the person they thought was the best candidate; it just happens to be someone that is black this time. America needs wake up do what is right.

It was Obama supporters who said that during the primaries.
I am a Democrat, Blip. I cannot support Obama because I do not trust him. Elect him and he will be “Mr. President” because that is our system, but trusting him is impossible. He like, he cheated, and he has misdirected. Nonesuch should serve as the commander-in-chief.

Can’t people be respectful to one another anymore?
Oh wait, the McCain-Palin campaign created this hateful divisiveness.
Have you noticed that Obama hasn’t attacked McCain or Palin on a personal level? He has only gone after McCain’s policies and plans. McCain and Palin only attack Obama on a personal level.
Kinda sad that the country is going backwards.

Do any of you who have used the term “socialism” understand what it means? By the way, do you realize that our government has just spent 250 BILLION dollars to basically NATIONALIZE certain banks because it had to? That’s a form of socialism. In this case, hopefully it will work.
I’m 60 years old – Diane Fanning is 54 – and would not insult a presidential candidate in such a way. Vote the way you wish, but VOTE!

Hey “len” your post does not make any sense. If you do not trust Mr. Obama, back it up with some solid information.

Even though I made my decision for whom to vote quite some time ago, I have watched every debate, speech and news show, and read each and every article I can find, about both parties, AND have read each and every entry contained herein. It absolutely astounds me what people will say, do, yell and write, and what people will latch onto as “truth” and then continue to perpetuate without bothering to check to see if the actual facts prove that “truth” — whether or not it is a truth which they can accept. Following this blog has been extraordinary — and positively scary. I certainly do hope that there will be some fact-checking soon, before ignorance grows even more pervasive, and the name-calling escalates into something worse. There just isn’t any place in the most historic election in the history of the United States of America for the ignorance, stupidy and devisiveness which is taking the place of intelligent, thoughtful, and knowledgeable information on which to base your vote. This goes beyond petty and sad, and scary. Our future, and the futures of our children, depend on our good judgment — not on ignorance and stupidity.

Government run Social Security is certainly socialist. There are more than a handful of countries that have had GREAT success with “private” social security (a certain percentage of your money goes into a PRIVATE account. So greedy politicians have no access to it)
Food stamps: Socialist
Medicaid: Socialist
Housing Aid: Socialist
The recent stimulus checks: Socialism in so far as those without any damn income got one.
Refundable tax credits despite receiving all federal withholding back: Socialist
Does this mean these programs are “bad”? With the exception of Social Security (currently used as a slush fund) it depends: Is the person receiving it using it as a hand-up? Or a hand-out?
As for what the recent bailout
It’s actually a loan (will we see any of that money back?)
More like socialism is the recent actions taken that forced several of the largest banks to participate in a program in which the government would buy shares (not controlling but all the same).
Having read the details of what transpired during the meeting between the banks and Paulson read exactly like parts of Atlas Shrugged.
Scary.
Bottom line: Neither party can at this point take the high road against socialism. They’re both guilty of violating several principles upon which this country was founded.

The problem is law suits period. I got into a little tiny fender bender. No one hurt and ended up getting my butt sued off due to “soft tissue injuries.”
Posted by: McStupid | Oct 19, 2008 9:20:46 PM
******************************************
Many lawsuits are certainly frivolous, but not all.
I know this from personal experience. More than 2 years ago, I was crossing the street when a vehicle hit me when it ran the light.
I suffered a broken leg, a brain injury, a broken nose, broken facial bones. I underwent 2 surgeries on my leg. I spent 9 days in the hospital in the neuro ICU. I lost 5 weeks of work. Later I had surgery to fix my nose. I spent over 3 months in physical therapy learning simply how to walk again. I spent nearly 5 months in occupational and cognition therapy (for problems related to the brain injury).
To this day, I continue to have some pain in my leg, I continue to have memory problems, sometimes I cannot find the right word. I tire very easily. I have more frequent headaches. I can no longer work in my profession as I do not have the required stamina: I cannot focus for long periods of time. I am still scared to cross the street.
Is a law suit not warranted?
I am not saying I’m some perpetual victim and I don’t want to come across as a whiner, but a person’s life can change (for the worse) dramatically in an instant (It took all of less than 5 seconds for the driver to hit me). When it’s due to someone else’s actions, in fairness that someone else has to pay for it.
