Um, Ma’am…Why Did You Give the Obama Campaign $174,800? And Did You Know That’s Illegal?
The Washington Post’s Matt Mosk and Sarah Cohen tell the story of Mary Biskup of Manchester, Mo.
Not long ago, the Obama campaign called her to ask why she donated $174,800, which was just $172,500 above the legal limit.
"That’s an error," she said.
Biskup told the Post that someone must have used her name, but other people’s credit cards to donate the money since no charges ever showed up on her bill.
The Obama campaign says they noticed the problem on its own and refunded all the money.
"As we reviewed our contributions and the more than 100,000 pages of our report, we noticed repeat donations from one contributor and proactively contacted the donor to verify whether the contributions were appropriate," said Obama spox Ben LaBolt. "We refunded all of the contributions and contacted authorities when we determined Ms. Biskup had not made them."
The sheer size of the Obama fundraising operation lends itself to this type of error, which is one of the reasons why disclosure and transparency — which the Obama campaign has studiously avoided for contributions under $200 — could have a cleansing "sunlight" effect.

Stephanopholous reports:
“These voters have poured record-breaking cash into the Obama campaign’s war chest, and in turn the campaign buys “boots on the grounds” and hires paid staffers to get out the vote.”
We learned our lession in the 2004 election that we outnumber the 527s and the big money lobbyists. Obama’s strategy was to really appeal to the working public, young people, middle class, poor, rich, and all the other groups that the “conservative right-wing” bigots have pitted against each other. He’s going to win this election because the minorities all realized that we are the mass!
Our $1 counts when we pool our resources to affect change. YES WE CAN!!!
(Vote early if you can because you will not believe how many people have become involved in the election process this time.)

Come on. THIS is the best you could come up with? Obama gives money BACK? This is supposed to be bad? Noooh, this is good. And no one reports on donors under $200 – and as a donor I want it that way. Everything I give is honest – and private.

I was listing to Iranian radio this morning and the Iranian community in America has learned that a lot of money has been donated by the Iranian regime to Obama’s campaign via Dubai route!
Also, don’t you think raising 100 million during this economic turmoil sounds a bit strange! who are these people that give and they are not affected by the economy?

In this one instance, the money was returned, but that’s not the point of this story. Obama is setting record numbers in campaign fundraising while America is in an economic recession. His camp has not provided full transparency. This might be an example of a much bigger problem. Get your heads out of the sand.

The Jordanian business partner of a prominent Florida businessman, who has raised more than $500,000 for Senator John McCain, appears to be at the center of a cluster of questionable donations to his presidential campaign.
Campaign finance records show Mr. McCain collected a little more than $50,000 in March from members of a single extended family, the Abdullahs, in California and several of their friends.
Amid a sea of contributions to the McCain campaign, the Abdullahs stand out. The checks come not from the usual exclusive coastal addresses, but from relatively hardscrabble inland towns like Downey and Colton. The donations are also startling because of their size: several donors initially wrote checks of $9,200, exceeding the $2,300 limit for an individual gift.

Republican presidential candidate John McCain so far is ignoring calls from several watchdog groups to cancel an Atlanta fundraiser promoted by Ralph Reed, a longtime friend and business partner of imprisoned lobbyist Jack Abramoff.
Public Citizen, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), and Campaign Money Watch are urging the Arizona senator to cancel plans for the Aug. 18 fundraiser at the Marriott Marquis in downtown Atlanta and remove Reed from McCain’s Victory 2008 Team.
Reed lost his 2006 campaign for Georgia lieutenant governor in large part because of details about his relationship with Abramoff — much of the information uncovered by McCain’s Indian Affairs Committee investigation into the wide-ranging lobbying corruption scandal.
The Senate probe discovered $4 million in payments Reed accepted to run a bogus anti-casino campaign aimed at reducing gambling competition. An Indian tribe with a competing casino made payments to Reed, which according to the Senate investigation’s final report, were “passed through” Abramoff’s firm, Preston, Gates, Ellis & Rouvelas Meeds, and another organization, Grover Norquist’s Americans for Tax Reform.
On the campaign trail, McCain often touts his work tackling Abramoff’s corrupt lobbying practices as evidence of his commitment to cleaning up Washington and a straight-shooting style that transcends politics.

I knew as soon as I saw that he was going to Hawaii it was because of the effort to get the courts to open up his records. His grandmother was in the hospital for three days and he didn’t go then, now all of a sudden, he’s going. He was there in June, and saw her for one hour, but now,he’s going, and he actually taped a news segment to explain how important she is to him, “being the last of them” and that he needs to go. Of course, the democrats are falling for it. However, whether you agree with Martin or not, Obama is evidently worried about something, cuz he’s on his way there right now. Two days from his campaign, to see the grandmother who was in the hospital a few days ago, no visit then, but a visit now that people are in Hawaii petitioning the court. Strange huh? Even stranger, the new report that Obama is NOT really an Obama. Seems he may be a Davis.
Well Well.

Tapper, you are a jerk. You take a positive move on the part of the Obama campaign and turn it into something nefarious. I know where you can use some sunshine yourself — like why you are so in the tank for McCain.
BTW: I’m one of those under $200 donors and, no, you don’t get to know who I am. I appreciate the Obama campaign protecting my privacy.

jpt: “one of the reasons why disclosure and transparency — which the Obama campaign has studiously avoided for contributions under $200″
Are you kidding me? “studiously avoided”? Campaigns are only required to report accumulated donations above $200, and the McCain database that only recently launched is of extremely limited use. Your phrasing is entirely inappropriate and suggests that this has been an issue that has existed for a long time that the Obama campaign–and not the McCain campaign–has actively resisted.
Come on. Did you feel obligated to throw something negative in to balance out the positive nature of the story, regardless of what it was?
Posted by: Nick B | October 23, 2008, 4:19 am 4:19 am
correct, Brenda. as much as I think that Obama is a criminal piece of trash, even I don’t believe Andy Martin’s theory, unless he presents proof. However, Andy does bring up an excellent point….the pics of Obama and his GM were released to the media by the campaign….but isn’t it strange, that this only full blood relative of Obama, the one person that he says he truly respects and talks lovingly all the time…..there is not ONE recent picture of the two of them together? I mean, they release of pic of him from at least 25 years ago with his GM.
How odd! If a newspaper was doing a story on you and your grandmother, would you send them a pic that was 25 years old?
Why is his GM kept in seclusion? She has osteoporosis, but that hardly should keep anyone quarantined 24/7. What is going on here?
BTW, Obama’s paternal grandmother swears he was born in Kenya, and she was there for the birth. Are you going to call her a liar too?
All of this could easily be solved, and save precious legal resources, if BO just released his original BC.
but he won’t. strange, isn’t it? McCain did, no big deal, why is this such a huge ordeal for BO?
as always, the plaguing question for everthing Obama does: what does he have to hide?

This election for 2008 is the very first time in all of my adult voting life that I have EVER donated to a political candidate. It is also the first time I have ever paid such close attention to an election and felt so strongly about it. The reason why Jake is questioning is because Obama has failed to be more transparent and reveal his list.
The bulk of Obama’s funds has been less than 200$ donations and Obama wants you to think that this is coming from regular Americans which is not the case.
Obama wants to buy the Presidency and this is not good for the democracy.

A lot of the comments in this thread reflect the ideas that Richard Hofstadter explored in The Paranoid Style in American Politics in 1964.
“In recent years, we have seen angry minds at work mainly among extreme right wingers, who have now demonstrated in the Goldwater movement how much political leverage can be got out of the animosities and passions of a small minority. But behind this I believe there is a style of mind that is far from new and that is not necessarily right wing. I call it the paranoid style simply because no other word adequately evokes the sense of heated exaggerations, suspiciousness, and conspiratorial fantasy I have in mind.”
Forty four years later…another Senator from Arizona…more of the same “paranoid style.”

NEW Facts from a friend of mine who was
working on the Obama Campaign but just quit
after this. The reason he has raised as much
money as he has for example he has 130
million in the bank vs Mccains 46 million is
because he is having people submit multiple
small donations under false names and false
addresses, but even more frightening is the
over seas postage coming in from the middle
east and then being re sealed into envelope
and mailed again from us post office so its
non traceable to the original source. This
scared her so bad she quit.
J. W.| Andover, NJ
I read your statement earlier and also have a
friend who worked with the Obama campaign
and also quit after being asked to take
donations coming in from the middle east
and having to put them in new envelope and
mail them back to the campaign under fake
names so it looks like it came domestically.
WAY TOO FRIGHTENING.

For the first time a Democrat has more cash on hand than the Republican in the general election.
So what is the GOP response to that: they’re trying to buy the election.
Think about that. The GOP has made a total fool of itself for eight years in a row, and their behavior in this election is the peak of their foolishness.

It’s not the money. It’s how they got it, and they’ve obviously gotten it illegally.

Obama’s nomination has made our country a complete mess and an embarrassment for the world to view.
Obama and his team of supporters have reared the ugly head of sexism and racism, criticized our country to the world and have been a complete embarrassed with voter fraud and the entire voting process.
Many in my community have never seen such bias in reporting, if you want to call it that. It is an embarrassing time to be an American.
The media should be emphasizing the importance of a man with good character, not defend a man that has associations with far left, anti American radical leaders and the like.
Shame on the media, shame on the Democrats and all Americans that support Obama’s unfair tactics and lack of experience.

Card is conservative. He might be registered as a Democrat… or he may have registered as a Democrat… but he is widely understood in the sci fi community as a “conservative” thinker.
He’s a great writer. And I think he brings a lot to the field of SF with his perspective.

What is fraudulent about contacting donors to make sure that they intended to donate large amounts?
Posted by: blip | October 23, 2008, 8:30 am 8:30 am
Oh… I get it… Obama is a Democrat… so that makes it fraudulent.
Gotcha.

I find the McCain supporters rather fake….
I tried to donate to durring the Primaries to Barack Obama not knowing its ilegal and they sent me an email saying they had returned my money and that they thank me but australian can not donate… It was all done in two days from my donation..
So all this stuff of them being bad and getting foriegn money is bogus!

John Michigan: “I read your ridiculous attempts to label Barack Obama as a liar, liberal, terrorist, muslim, un-american, socialist, communitst and more. So why is it you have called him everything but a black man?”
Maybe because his race doesn’t matter to them.

BO has 200million dollars of “undocumented donations”, becasue htey are each individually under 200.00. However, a list of some of those donations was discovered to reflect names such as “Doodle Poo” and “Good Will”, and cumulative donations under those (and other) fraudulent names that total well over the max contribution of 2300.00 BO refuses to post the list of sub $200.00 donations – as is his right – but the McCain capmpaign has disclosed theirs on their website. BO also received $30000 from a Palestinian group (illegal to accept foreign money) which they claimed ot have returned but there is no documention for that return and the guys (Ibrahim Abu Jayyab) calim they never received it…hmmm

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It’s been documented, that the Obama campaign has recieved money from foreign donations. I’m sure it’s been returned.
Remember early on, it was reported, that ACORN was using felons to help get registrations, and it was also disclosed, that some of these were experts in identity theft. It’s very possible, someone got hold of this womans credit info, and made the charge. Kudos to the Obama campaign for catching it.
However, this is the 2nd time this has been reported. My advice would be, to check your statements carefully. Identity theft is a rampant crime.
I may want to hold back on donations…
House Education and Labor Committee Chairman George Miller, D-California, and Rep. Jim McDermott, D-Washington, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee’s Subcommittee on Income Security and Family Support, are looking at redirecting those tax breaks to a new system of guaranteed retirement accounts to which all workers would be obliged to contribute.
Essentially they’ll do away with 401k’s, and oblige another 5% of your earnings into this plan. You will have no other retirement plan, then what comes from the Government.
Another social security plan…and we all know how well the government has done with that program.
I have no doubt a full disclosure would reveal names of individuals, like myself, who have never contributed to Senator Obama’s campaign.
The lack of scrutiny by regulatory agencies allows candidates to accept contributions from anyone, anywhere, in any amount with virtually no threat of being held accountable.
The public financing program was established to prevent big money from influencing elections. The concept is good, however, the fact that public financing is not mandatory leaves the door wide open to corrupt campaign funding.
Obama LIED he said he would take public financing. What else is he lying about???
could it be…
EVERYTHING!
Who did they return the $174,800 to? The person whose identity was stolen or the ones who made the contributions? If it’s to the contributors who falsely listed her, then they know who they are.
The Obama campaign is reported to have also received an order for $30,000 worth of Obama t-shirts that were determined later to be for the Gaza Strip. The campaign’s defense was the address was GA, which they thought was Georgia. They claimed they returned the money. My question: Where did they ship the shirts to and how many more Obama t-shirts are in the Gaza Strip. Will they be wearing them in celebration like when they danced on 9/11?
get with the program,
Obama didn’t lie. He stated publicly, ‘I have promised that I will sit down with John McCain and talk about can we preserve a public system, as long as we are taking into account third party independent expenditures.’
That was the problem, reining in third party independents from running tv ads, etc. (remember the damage by the swiftboaters)
There was no agreement reached so Obama wisely opted out.
The idea of public financing seemed a bad one this year for fairness because the Republican National Party had a huge war chest, and the DNC had a very modest one two months ago. So McCain would have had a huge advantage.
And with half of Obama’s donation total coming from the ‘little people’ in contributions less than $200 this election really has been influenced by regular folk, not just the rich and powerful. Democracy at work. It is supposed to be about all of us, not just the rich and powerful.
This is nothing!! Both parties/sides will have some problems. Technology has created this problem. But since donations are below $200 by law they do not have to be reported. Obama does have many questions, name, address, employer, age, occupation, salary range, must check box to indicate that person donating is compliant with their rules. Can this system be broken – yes – all system can be broken. Is usually done by expert or possible other party plant. So this expert may be a plant. We face these same problems any time we do business online.
This example is given as it shows they do try. This is not a cleansing. But is more than likely a response to Republican complaints Obama has dangerous odnors!!
You must examine Republican methods and the Republican claims Obama is a terrorist. Obama is dangerous. Obama is anti-American!! Should be illegal!! These are despicable and totally false!!
Obama donation site has developed as many safe guards they they could to avoid problems. They want all to be fair. They have corrected problems in past, but don’t say much. Maybe they need to now proudly show how many times they correct since they are getting attacked!!
I have had it with Republican smears!! I am Republican but have given up on them. After election I am changing my part affiliation at age 64. Can’t take the lies and tactics any more. I don’t even know this party anymore. They are acting like “THUGS” of a mafia organization.
Obama’s big donations are ocming from all the fundraisers that were begun starting in July-Aug. Go back and read newspapers to see where Democrats were one with no money. Experts predicted Republican Machine would dominate Democrats as they have in past. Obama signed on with Democratic National Party. Large Fundraisers set up all around country. Obama and Democratic Party now have the money. Under Obama management Democrats now have money for first time. Large donors now have outpaced small donors which were the trademark of Obama Campaign. Obama has been wise to know about Republicans and all their 527 groups of the super rich who add to Republican candidate campaign money coffers and the attacks they make upon Democrat candidates. Republican candidate may show no money, but they are supplemented largely by 527 groups and others.
Please do your research into this before accusing Obama. You would be shocked about Republicans. I am Republican and I am!! Just retired an d have had much more time to do lots of research. Shocking, shocking!!
Nothing is wrong with Obama Fundraising!! Ask about John McCain Fundraising and his 527 groups???? Ask what these groups are doing???
This Republican has had it with the Republican lies!!
to Sharonklim – the reason the Repubs did not eclipse Obama is because John McCain stood behind his work to take the public financing money. Obama promised he would then decided he did not need to. Another example of political expediency for this man – say one thing to get through the primaries then change your mind when you have what you want. Don’t be surprised when his presidency is the same way.
How many ways can Obama cheat? He started out cheating and he’s STILL CHEATING. When is the media going to cover this? His whole life is a made up cheat. Why didn’t he go to his grandmother? Because his new birth certificate isn’t finished yet!!!
Posted by: RL in Illinois | October 23, 2008, 2:45 pm 2:45 pm
Hey RL –
You have it completely backward. This story indicates that the Obama campaign is looking through the list of donations to find irregularities, and refunding donations that don’t appear to be lawful. They are doing this ON THEIR OWN; no outside group found a problem and forced them to do this.
That’s not cheating, it’s called being honest.
Based on the evidence gathered thus far it is clear that the Obama campaign is in serious trouble with fraudulent and illegal contributions. The question is, when will the main media channels and the Federal Election Commission pay attention to this? After the election?! If it turns out that the Obama campaign did indeed encourage these fraudulent credit card transactions by turning off the security features on their online donor page, thus stealing the election, there will be hell to pay later.
THIS WILL NOT STAND.
