Why Is McCain Spending So Much Time in Pennsylvania?

They see the Keystone State as essential on their path to victory. So Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., his wife Cindy, and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin are spending considerable time in the state.

"We love Pennsylvania!" McCain campaign manager Rick Davis said yesterday on a conference call with reporters. "Pennsylvania’s our kind of place.  We anticipate winning Pennsylvania, we don’t believe any of the nay-sayers that think Pennsylvania is out of reach."

Davis added, "I would remind everybody that the night before the Pennsylvania primary, Barack Obama had his biggest crowd he’d ever had there, 32,000 people, and got trounced by ten points when everybody, including all of you on the phone, thought he was going to sweep the state by a margin of clear victory."

(Huh? Almost every single poll had Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., up significantly. Oh well.)

"The last thing I’ve learned in life, and maybe it’s too late to apply to this campaign, but don’t believe the press when they tell you you’re going to lose a state," Davis said. "The bottom line is, I think the polls are all over the map.  You look at the national numbers, some of them have us in four or five points, others have them in double digits, I mean you tell me who’s going to turn out."

Because Obama is going to take Colorado, Nevada, Iowa, New Mexico, Virginia, and Missouri which were all Bush states in 2004. They are trying to take the only blue state that they possibly have a chance.

Because McCain is going to WIN PENNSYLVANIA. Hillary did too as BO pissed off alot of small town bible huggers and gun owners who are not BITTER. They know the arrogant one meant the words he used in San Francisco. McCain TALKS TO ALL AMERICANS THE SAME, and Palin is in NV right now giving an amazing stump speech! She is the real rock star in this campaing and BO is B-0-ring!
COUNTRY FIRST RESONATES WITH MILLIONS, AND NOT Obama first. Obama the “wealth spreader”, as Gov. Palin just said.

Obama might have had a big crowd the night before, but no one really expected him to carry the state in the primaries. The RCP average of polls at the time of that vote showed Obama trailing by 6 points. He ended up losing by 9… right now, the RCP average has Obama at +11… so yeah, its not really like the primaries at all.

Don’t hope for a Bradley effect in PA. when Ed Rendell ran against the “black guy,” Rendell won by the exact margin that polls were showing. Believe me, if they are going to vote for the “white guy,” the won’t lie in PA. Who is up right now?

And the slipping of reality away from the McCain camp is complete.
It started with Palin’s comments about how the Troopergate report cleared her. Then Cindy’s comments on how the race has turned nasty ONLY AGAINST THEM. And now Davis is thinkinging that they have a chance in PA.

Ater Jack Murthas Comments I wonder how the Southern, Midwestern and Eastern States really feel as rural voters make up a majority of the vote. I personally find it appalling that if you vote against Obama you are a racist or redneck. What a joke. It is obivious that the black vote will go for Obama ( a form of racism) and some whites will vote for McCain on race so that excuse should be a dead heat. But there are a majority of Americans that will vote based on their feelings about what the two parties represent. And beleive me they are opposite. My fear is do we really want Democrats running this country. I keep looking and asking what have they done since being in control of the congress the last two years and I find not much. So how are they going to help us. On the other hand I ask on the Repbulican side why they are so against helping the middle class and so hung up on help for the people that need it most. It is a catch twenty two. Honestly, I am a independent and scared to death to vote either way. But will have to make a choice November 3. I think the press has been so biased it isn’t funny and we all have our agenda but this election on national security and the economy is very very important so I hope everyone decides what is best for their families longterm. All I hear right now are sweet promises and no action except to bailout wall street and both parties did that.

Q: Brandon Garcia wants to know, “What does the Vice President do?”
PALIN: That’s something that Piper would ask me! … [T]hey’re in charge of the U.S. Senate so if they want to they can really get in there with the senators and make a lot of good policy changes that will make life better for Brandon and his family and his classroom.
Correct answer:Article I of the Constitution establishes an exceptionally limited role for the Vice President — giving the office holder a vote only when the Senate is “equally divided”:
The Vice President of the United States shall be President of the Senate, but shall have no vote, unless they be equally divided.

The McCain campaign has no illusions about winning Pennsylvania. But having conceded Iowa, New Mexico and Colorado, they are forced to pretend that they have a chance to win PA, in order to headfake the media and Republican voters into thinking that the race is still competitive. Otherwise, there could be a disastrous effect on down ballot GOP races if it appeared that McCain had conceded the Presidential race. But make no mistake about it, a Republican presidential candidate who is 2% ahead in the latest poll in Georgia has absolutely no chance of winning.

From what I understand, Obama’s grandmother suffered a broken hip a couple of weeks ago and was in the hospital having that taken care of.
She is now finishing her recovery at home with Obama’s sister taking care of her.
While broken hips can be serious, particularly in an elderly person, I feel like we were slightly misled here.
Of course if she was indeed “gravely ill,” why didn’t he leave immediately, instead of waiting until Thursday?

Come listen to a story about a man named McCain
Decided to run for President but forgot to bring his brain.
And then one day he was losing in the polls
So he brought in a woman hoping to smell just like a rose.
Sarah that is, Palin…………..Alaskan Governor……….Hockey Mom
Well the next thing you know John’s polls began to rise
But when he thought he had them, there came a big surprise
He thought he could win with just Wright and Bill Ayers
But the economy tanked and the country got the scares.
Stocks plummet……………..401k’s gone………..
Well they lost the debates in the view of peoples eyes
There message was off base but they kept spreading lies.
Joe the Plumber, ACORN and Socialism became their main selection
Which ended up costing them this 2008 election.

Maybe, people are starting to question Obama’s position and statement that he’ll cut taxes 95% statement on “working families”. “Yes, I believe later on there should be tax increases. Speaking personally, I think there are a lot of very rich people out there whom we can tax at a point down the road and recover some of this money.” Barney being Frank about Obama.
Except, Obama’s plan for taxing “the rich” only taxes income. Obama’s wealthy friends like Gates, Buffet and Soros, don’t make the bulk of their money through “income” or a paycheck like the true middle and upper middle class.

McCain can’t win Pennsylvania.
Even before most people realized that the Iraq war was a mistake, and before the economy tanked, the gas price soared, and Wall Street took a nosedive, Bush could not take Pennsylvania from Kerry in 2004.
If McCain has to win Pennsylvania, he might as well start working on the concession speech right now.

Yes…and for years, Bush went to Congress to get reform on Fannie, and Freddie. The Republicans had the control, but not enough votes to push a bill thru, on reform.
McCain, along with several other Republicans kept pushing…and they did take a vote. All republicans, voted for reform….not one democrat voted for reform on Frannie, or Freddie.
Check the government records. So if you want to blame anyone for the economy, it’s not Bush…and the economy went into a tail spin, thanks to the work of ACORN, Frannie, and Freddie…and all are liberal based entities.

Republicans had a 30 seat advantage in the House and a 9 seat majority in the Senate. Yet somehow its the Democrats fault. Not the dozen Republicans members of Congress who have been indicted for bribery. Not the Republicans who pushed for deregualtion and considered oversight to be a bad thing. Let the markets rule themselves we were told over and over again by Republicans.
“McCain, along with several other Republicans kept pushing…and they did take a vote.”
McCain did no such thing. Hagel was the engine behind S.190. McCain cosponsored it a full year after it was dead in committee. There was not floor vote.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and his advisers are doing their best to brush aside questions — raised in the liberal blogosphere — about whether he is qualified under the Constitution to be president. But many legal scholars and government lawyers say it’s a serious question with no clear answer.
The problem arises from a phrase in the Constitution setting out who is eligible to be president. Article II, which also specifies that a person must be at least 35 years old, says “No person except a natural born Citizen” can be president.
Sen. McCain is undoubtedly a citizen. He was born on Aug. 29, 1936, in the Panama Canal Zone, and Congress has specifically provided that anyone born there of U.S. parents, as he was, is a citizen. Indeed, the general rule is that anyone born of U.S. parents outside the United States is a citizen.
But is John McCain a natural born citizen? The Constitution does not define the term further, and legal scholars say the notes of the Constitution’s drafters shed little light on what they meant. It seems clear only that the founders wanted to make certain that whoever was president would be loyal to the U.S. alone and not to some other country. But the term “natural born citizen,” many scholars say, was not in common use at the time the Constitution was written.
1964, the Supreme Court that “natural born” meant born inside the United States. In an opinion on an unrelated issue, the court observed, “The rights of citizenship of the native born and of the naturalized person are of the same dignity and are coextensive. The only difference drawn by the Constitution is that only the ‘natural born’ citizen is eligible to be President.” But that language is not legally binding, and the Supreme Court has never ruled on what “natural born” means.

How come I never hear anyone yell “USA” at an Obama rally like they do at all the McCain and Palin rallies? Oh, that’s right….it’s all about him, “the one”. What a load.
Hey Jake, where is the headline Obama endorsed Ayers book? Photo and article stating Michelle organized a panel with both men at the University of Chicago.
Oh, but Obama really doesn’t know Ayers….keep that spin MSM.
WAKE UP PEOPLE – this election has been decided for you by MSM and bought for you too, by the candidate who gave McCain his word he would stick to the same financing dollars… WHAT A LYING SACK.
NEVER OBAMA.

Since the Supreme Court ruled on this 30 years after McCains birth, it would not apply to him. Only to those born after 1964.
I have a friend who was born on an American Army base in 1964, in Germany, and she is indeed, a U.S. citizen.

McCain’s pulling back in Iowa, Colorado, New Mexico, New Hampshire and Wisconsin. The only path he has left involves flipping Pennsylvania where Obama is up somewhere between 8-15%, is well financed, and much better organized.

“I have a friend who was born on an American Army base in 1964, in Germany, and she is indeed, a U.S. citizen.”
Were either of her parents citizens?
If so, that would make her a citizen not the location of her birth.

MikeNC…I would question the sites you visit. Google has donated a large amount to Obama’s campaign.
This is from the very liberal msnbc.
Now I won’t dispute Obama’s citizenship, I will just lay out some of the questions people have brought up.
On his birthcertificate, the certificate number is blacked out. Why? Some speculate that it is his sisters, and they used it,and covered up that number.
The embossed seal of Hawaii is not on the birth certificate, that Obama’s campaign put on the site.
One other I read was…there is a difference between a birth certificate, and a certification of birth, but I think that’s just semantics.
Lastly, I read…because his mother was 18, and according to the law then, she was to young, if she had Obama outside of the country, for him to be a citizen. A U.S. citizen giving birth outside of the U.S. would have to be 5 years past their 18th birthday for that to be valid. Meaning his mother should have been 21.
Also…when he was adopted, some question , on his return to the U.S. did he reapply for his citizenship? As far as I know, the document was asked for, but never given.
However….I don’t know, nor am I sure I believe any of those questions. Mr. Obama has a passport, and you need valid criteria to attain one. That tells me that yes, without dispute, that he is a U.S. citizen.
If he attained a passport without proper identification, then we have serious problems in this country with attaining passports, and it needs to be looked into.

Ryan, her father was in the army, and he, his wife, and previous children all lived in Germany during his time there.
Good thing she’s not running for President.

I want to rectify a previous statement I made. I said 18, and I meant 5 years passed their 16th birthday.
Sorry about that.

I’m a conservative, but I will go out on a limb on this, to show I can be logical, and fair.
Perhaps this was a typo. The h, and j keys are right next to each other, and could easily have been a typo, that was over looked. Which would explain why the next year it was changed.

OPEC is having a meeting, to cut production, and drive up oil prices. Get ready to go back to $4 a gallon. Especially if Pelosi, and Reid get their way, and place the ban back on offshore drilling.

Jake, so the guy tells a big whopper or two on his conference calls, what do you expect from a lobbyist?
Oh, excuse me “former lobbyist”. And I take it as an article of faith that he will stay a former lobbyist because the way that Rick Davis has ‘managed’ this campaign and destroyed the McCain brand, people would have to be crazy to hire him as a lobbyist.
I sure hope the McCain camp pays him well though, because now that he’s not getting any more walking around money from Freddie Mac he’ll have to live on unemployment insurance for a few months before he can pick up a new job in this Republican economy.
I sure wish everyone had wisened up sooner. Who knows what would have happened if we hadn’t spent 12 of the last 14 years under a Republican Congress and the last 8 years with a Republican president (who McCain is all lips and teeth with on monetary and tax policy).
I’m guessing we wouldn’t have $10 trillion in national debt;
AND gotten stuck in two quagmires that have gone on longer than WWII;
AND, as the conservative Mayor of London observed – destroyed the value of our global brand image for democracy and capitalism.
Thank you GOP. Heckuva job!
Oh, what was it George Bush said?
Fool me once, shame on you…
Fool me twice, uh….
Fool me three times?

Let’s see.
Dodd, and Franks said there wasn’t a problem. Bush 17 times this year alone, called for reform on Frannie, and Freddie.ACORN who endorses Obama, pressured banks into giving out risky loans, knowing they couldn’t pay them back. Clinton by his own admission said it was his revision to CRA that set the wheels in motion to the financial downfall.
McCain in 2006 co-wrote a bill for reform, on Frannie, and Freddie, and all Republicans voted yay, Democrats nay. Franks a month before the fall out, still said, they were stable.
Yet this is still Bush’s fault, even though he called for reform, for years…and when a bill was brought to the floor, not even Barack would take a leadership role, and go against the grain, to vote, for reform.

You may all want to listen to the news just a tad better. Obama’s campaign mistakenly released their internal poll numbers for PA which showed a two point spread between the two.
Perhaps thats WHY McCain is there, hmmmm Jake?
You might also want to remember Jake, YES, when Hillary’s poll numbers were up, she usually won, but when Obama’s were up…who won????? Hillary. Need I say South Dakota? New Hampshire?
Obama is only where he is due to caucus states. His famous machine pulled out the votes by any tactic necessary. When it was up to the STATES per primary voting to choose, they chose Hillary.
Obama over polls as well.
You may all want to remember that.
Now, perhaps someone will have a DECENT debate instead of acting like children and threatening people with death?
What flavor is the koolaid today?

“Obama is only where he is due to caucus states. His famous machine pulled out the votes by any tactic necessary. When it was up to the STATES per primary voting to choose, they chose Hillary.”
Obama won 8 primary states.
“Obama over polls as well.”
Actually studies found he underpolled because he brought so many new voters in.
The lesson as always? Right wingers lie.

“McCain in 2006 co-wrote a bill for reform,”
McCain cowrote nothing. He cosponsored a bill (that was intro’d in Jan 2005) in May of 2006.

Uh, some people really do believe everything at face value…
John McCain co-wrote a bill that would have saved Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae?
And those rascally old Democrats didn’t let him?
Hmmmm.
Well. How is it that?

109th CONGRESS
1st Session
S. 190
IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES
January 26, 2005
Mr. HAGEL (for himself, Mr. SUNUNU, and Mrs. DOLE) introduced the following bill; which was read twice and referred to the Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Afairs++

McCain didn’t sponsor or co-sponsor the bill?
And how was it that the Republicans controlled both the House and Senate AND the Presidency…and it didn’t pass?
—-
109th Congress (2005-2007)
Majority Party: Republican (55 seats)
Minority Party: Democrat (44 seats)
Other Parties: Independent (1 seat)
Total Seats: 100

FYI that bill only changed the regulatory boxes around, it would have done nothing to avert the mortgage lending crisis NOR would it have done anything about the Credit Default Swaps that brought down A.I.G.
In fact, that bill would have weakened both Freddie and Fannie by forcing them to sell off assets that helped them to diversify:
And here is an article that shows the Republicans were WRONG and the Democrats were RIGHT:

From Allbusiness:
The Republican-backed measure would require Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to sell portfolio assets unrelated to their mortgage securities businesses. A Democratic alternative would have permitted the regulator to reduce the GSEs’ portfolio without requiring such cuts.

Don’t diversify? That’s the GOP’s and John McCain’s financial wisdom?
Evidently there were enough folks out there who thought it was a bad idea the way the bill was written.
Just goes to show, John McCain doesn’t know Economics OR Finance.

I work for a regulatory agency and saw it first hand. It’s true that the Bush administration has stood for light regulation of capital markets. But it did not invent this approach. By the middle of the last decade, experts across the spectrum believed that U.S. financial institutions faced outmoded restraints on their ability to innovate. Thus, the Clinton administration, supported by then-Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan, refused to tighten regulations on financial derivatives, memorably dubbed “financial weapons of mass destruction” by Warren Buffett. The 1999 repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act, a Depression-era law separating commercial banking and investment banking, passed with overwhelming bipartisan support in Congress and was signed into law by President Bill Clinton. Barney Frank and Frankin Raines were the primary blame. FNma policies coerced banks into making subprime loans or prime loans would not be guarantee. They wanted to increase home ownership regardless if someone could afford it. They packaged the loans as securities and sold them on Wall Street. The pools got too saturated with bad loans. Obama as an attorney for Acorn punished banks with lawsuits houlding up branch applications unless they located in downtrodded neighborhoods.

@jamesferrel
I don’t think you can call Dunkin Donuts a regulatory agency. Unless your department audits the number of chocolate sprinkles per product.
Nearly everything in your post is wrong, so whatever it is you do, you’re not in finance.
Barney Frank in the minority party for 12 years was the main cause?
Fannie and Freddie made the banks write subprime loans? Sure they did. And of course, no mortgage salespeople ever oversold the qualifications of borrowers just to make a commission. Naw, no one would do that.

I like the stubborn state of denial from the Mccain campaign. If they care, they should stay in PA but this race is far out of their rich. So sad this is coming from one of Mccain’s “old boys network”……………….this is my best punch line from Obama…..the old boys network? in the Mccain campaign, thats called a staff meeting…..

CORRECTION…….I meant to write “far out of their reach………..not rich. why is nobody talking about the fact that MCCAIN WAS ABANDONED IN HIS CAMPAIGN BUS? HE WAS DISCOVERED THE FOLLOWING MORNING BY TWO WOMEN..

Posted by: 002186 | October 21, 2008, 8:12 pm 8:12 pm

Exactly when was it proven Obama is a citizen of the U.S.? Last I heard, he was to provide the ORIGINAL LONG FORM of his cert, because the one he gave did not have a seal on it and it appeared to have been altered by Photoshop.
Also, you Obamanuts may like to know, that even on election day, Bush was behind 6 POINTS! Guess who won! I don’t presume to know who will win. But, I do know that from many polls in the past, they are just not very reliable. It could still go either way. Some people have reported their cars being vandalized because of their McCain/Palin sign. Some pizza parlor is offering free pizzas if you bring them any McCain/Palin sign (so they can dispose of it of course). It shouldn’t be this way, but many people do not talk about voting for McCain because of this.
Whatever happened to free speech? Is it only good for liberals?
I also agree about Grandma……if she is in such bad shape, why wait two days?????? Sympathy votes? WHy not, they are already trying to buy the election.
Does anyone else notice how poor Biden’s grammar is? I mean anyone can make a mistake, but “shoulda, coulda, gonna.” Gee whiz!

Posted by: Maria | October 21, 2008, 8:15 pm 8:15 pm

Maria, Bush was ahead of Gore in 4 of the 5 tracking polls in October. In 2004, Bush was ahead of Kerry for all but a few days in October.
It’s the internet, you can look things up! Try it!

Call me paranoid, but I think this effort is just cover for Pennsylvania to be the new Ohio. Republican supporter made electronic voting machines will supply a victory that will not make any sense given the pre-election and exit polls.
