Axelrod: Hillary Won’t Be a ‘Potted Plant’

President-elect Barack Obama and Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY., have had some "great discussions" about her role in Obama’s cabinet, incoming White House senior adviser David Axelrod told me today on "This Week."

But make no mistake: Obama is in charge of policy, he said.

"People have to understand one thing," Axelrod said, "One person is going to be in charge of policy and that is going to be Obama and he is going to assemble a group of talented people to tackle that problem…he is assembling the best possible team to move this country forward, but he will set the direction."

However Axelrod said Clinton and the other cabinet secretaries will be "partners" with Obama.

"He is someone who invites a strong opinions. He enjoys that he thinks that’s an important element of leadership," Axelrod said.

"They are not going to be potted plants in their departments, they are going to be partners and I’m sure that is the message he has given them in their discussions."

It seems that Mr. Obama only dare to hire experienced people and not one with judgement, the one quality he has claimed he has.

Good job ……………He is doing the right thing and I sure hope it proves a great success for all of them.

Yes, yes, yes, our Greatest Leader is in charge. He can take all credits he wants – no problem at all – like he did after Lugar’s hard work for more than 20 years.
Hillary will do what she see fit for the best interest of the country. She will bring stability and reassurance to the Market even as an SOS. That’s good enough for me – and for you. If our Smartest Leader thinks and wants you to believe it’s his policy. So be it.

Hear, hear! We voted for him to take this country in a new direction. He’s choosing strong, intelligent people who are not afraid of expressing their opinions. He doesn’t want yes men and women. I think we should trust him to do the job we have hired him to do.

At least, Hillary is holding haft of the democrat population. This decision will create a stronger base for Obama to execute his plans.
One has experience, the other offers good judgment and execution. Both of them have ideals to serve the country. I am sure, if there is any differences, they are intelligent enough to work together for a common purpose.

pmp2008,
Who do you think has good judgment? Hillary, I suppose since Pres 0bama has none other than beneficial to himself.
Experience? I suppose you mean it’s Hillary also.
So one an other is one after all.

When are we as americans going to accept resonsibility for our share of auto industry and the ecomony in general. If we would have been buying more fuel efficient cars, detroit would have had to build them. We spend too much time blaming other and not enough time to help fix these problems. I see a country that wants to abdicates problems to others and not fix them ourselves.

Good judgment amounts to appointing experienced people; also good manager amounts to being in charge of what the more experienced or shall I say appropriately experienced people do for you. A leader must choose the right people. It has never been different in the past and will not in future. There is only one President or a Leader. What a bunch of stupid arguments I have read here.

Well.
Imagine Hillary and Bill happily playing second fiddle!
Trust me on this: If they get their dirty selves in that cabinet, they will find a way to make Obama second fiddle – perhaps as sweet revenge for Obama taking it away from them.
But if BO has hit on an approach to make the IRS-untouched Bill disclose the source of his funding …

I don’t think either of them is that stupid. Obama can get rid of her at will, then she’d be out of a job. I think she will do a superb job.

They will be like batman and Robin only riding in a much more fuel efficient automobile. Seriously, Hillary is a stellar pick and Obama has his game on at this juncture. The Country may be in a mess, but its starting to look like a new day is dawning!

Obama stated that he is going to be a President for all who supported and does not support him still, so I have no problem with the dissenting views because it doesn’t change the outcome.
What I find surprising throughout the campaign is how little Americans regard education and intelligence. The media in general and most of the anchors could do with a lot more of both.
Why doesn’t anyone have a problem with George Bush and his performance throughout this crisis and especially now. Has he AWOL? and no one seems to care. The transition period was required to allow the president-elect to get ready, not govern while the sitting president sleeps. Don’t worry about the Cabinet picks, the change we can believe in is our new president, and its definitely the change we need from George Bush. Don’t get it twisted!!!

Dennis Blair being considered for DNI is a travesty. If Obama means what he says about ethics in high places, Blair is not the guy. He was on the Head of the Institute for Defense Analyses while DOD had told it to study F-22. Blair didnt recuse himself despite having a conflict of interest. He resigned! This is change???

It amazes me how illiterate people sound who criticize our next President. Could that be the determining factor between being a Democrat and a Republican? Yes. I believe it is. Ignorance, stupidity and a lack of formal education lead to the GOP.

Obama is the potted plant. Just water him and add fertilizer occasionally. And, he will just sit back and delegate!
That is what he is trained to do! :)

I do not want as Secretary of State someone who cannot discern the difference between being under sniper fire and a friendly welcome. I am appalled, and I was a Hillary supporter until this story came to light. Obama, we deserve better than the self-serving Clintonistas.

Posted by: Jason | November 23, 2008, 7:13 pm 7:13 pm

The Clintons are capable people without all of the manipulation by media, surragates, and old timers.
I think the Clinton appointment was a bargning chip to get the support that the Obama campaign was convienced it needed to win. To really be “CHANG”, if the Clinton’s chose not to be involved they should have been left alone and the Obama campaign should have taken the risk. I think they would have been suprised.
If the truth was faced, Obama started to move up with women and the working man’s voters before the Clinton drama.
this has the over tones of “calling in favors”.
With the push of the media and the oldtimers there was no trust that the new guy was capable of doing the job.
This is the unspoken evidence of the insidius racism in our country. AND THIS IS NOT THE RACE CARD.

FYI allknowingdude,
Formal education is for the most part a boring system of brainwashing by pseudo intellectuals called professors!
Most people go through the ritual to get the piece of paper that buys them entrance to their dream job – at least it used to!
It would appear that most bloggers, liberal or conservative, have not gone through the process! :)

Posted by: aware2u | November 23, 2008, 7:22 pm 7:22 pm

Given the two choices, I’m still glad I voted for Obama. But he is getting off to a very bad start.
The primary reason I supported him was that he was acceptable and Hillary wasn’t. It seems that the only change coming from Obama is the name of the prez.

Actually formal education, provided you do not sleep through class, teaches you to think for yourself and not be a sheep.

No matter how Obama’s camp spins his appointments and his presumed appointments, this is looking more like a Clinton 3rd term than his, “Change You Can Believe In,” campaign mantra. The irony of that doesn’t slip past this fella.

I truly believe that the next time Hillary Clinton runs for President she will bring to the plate a whole lot more experience as the result of accepting Obama’s offer. She won’t be beatable.I’m so looking forward to watching her take on this job.

I enjoy hearing about Obama’s plans to start up new jobs, work on the conservation of energy, and clean up schools. Hillary will never be a “stick in the mud”. She has too much class. All in all this is going to be a true pain reliever and I am looking forward to it.

Well, I hope that they stick to that story if things don’t go right and not try to throw Hillary under the bus because of his policies. I expect him to take responsibility for his policies and not try tor throw the people in his administration under the bus anytime he sees fit, the bus is pretty full from the Primaries and the General Election, let us hope that there are no more passengers.

I never bought into O’s BS to start with,I’ve seen him as an ego-maniacal power hungry liar, from day one.
But I have to hand it to him for this, defeat the Clintons by clamoring for change, run against a Bush 3rd term, then surround himself with Clinton’s team (even Hillary)for a 3rd Clinton term and all to make himself look good.
He maybe a complete fraud, but he is one smart/slick fraud!
Ps. Anyone notice how Mr. “we are all equal members of the American family” hasn’t said a word about the passage of Prop 8?

Posted by: Michael ONeal | November 24, 2008, 12:04 am 12:04 am

No offense, I agree this is an important matter, but lets look at priorities. Economy, 2 wars, hmm. Is it more important right now for him to focus on marriage for all or the declining economy and its repercussions that millions will face. I think its more important to eat and have shelter right now than getting married, focus people focus. What would a comment from him actually do at this point in time, nothing. I find it interesting that everyone has been so quick to judge and he is not even in office yet. We have never had a situation like this before, and in the past new incoming Presidents were not held to this unreasonable standard. He has already said he does not support same sex marriage, but feels they should have the same rights, wait till he gets into office so he can actually really do something. Give it a rest. As much as we do not want to except it that other guy is still in charge.

No sooner had the children of Israel gotten out of Egypt than they started complaining….
Same human tendency. Derives from individual personal traits that spills over the Internet. What is wrong with at least waiting until inauguration day? Nearly half of the appointees are not Washington insiders or Clinton reruns. Would you all rather have him put complete 100% inexperienced people? Sometimes even change needs a transition – experienced hands to guid e the new – that is why Summers is still there as well as the new k.o.b. Geithner.
Truth is that half of the premature complaining is not about Obama but about the blogger – one even picking hairs about president-elect not president – then in the same blog blames not yet president for the actions while not yet president. What a waste of Internet traffic. Get over the campaign and the election, folks. Hate never filled a single pocket or stomach.
God bless all those who choose to do or sserve whether Obama, Clinton, Geithner, Summers, military and everywhere else, the millions that keep our country moving forward.

Apparently God placed this comment in your thoughts to write. ‘God Bless You’ for making the most sensible and logical comment entered on this blog. More than anything we all better be getting down on our kness to pray that all goes well with this new administration and stop all of this negative energy that we usually so easily want to send around. Enough problems have bee created by this past administration to last a life time. Why don’t some of you channel that energy into some possitive ideas that negative energy you can send through on how to get us out of this mess, since some of you seem to be able to predict what the president-elect and his cabinet will do. How about that for some good feedback and positive results. Try it. It might make you feel better. (AND ‘FOR THE LOVE OF GOD’ AND I MEAN THAT LITERRALY, GIVE THE MAN A CHANCE TO GET SWORN IN HUH!)
