Details on Hillary-Barack Meeting

ABC News’ Martha Raddatz reports: President-elect Barack Obama met with Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., Thursday in Chicago to discuss the possibility of the senator becoming secretary of state.

A source with knowledge of the transition process describes the meeting as not a hard offer. Obama is more cautious than that.

He is doing this more elegantly, but a source said Obama took a big step toward Hillary. They had a long private meeting in which they talked about their philosophies and what had transpired during the campaign.

He was extremely respectful, saying she was great, and giving her a huge amount of support. He said that he knew how much she cared about health care but said there are other challenges, and wanted to reach out to her about secretary of state.

They were both cautious but again took a big step toward her. She reciprocated.

Obama does not want to be seen as being rejected by her, but it is “hers to turn down,” one source put it.

They have an agreement to have another meeting or phone conversation about this very soon.

ABC News has also confirmed that New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson met with Obama in Chicago today, per a Democratic source. Richardson has also been rumored to be a candidate for the Secretary of State position.

Too much speculation. I will wait when President elect Obama notify us of his Secretary of State.

Agreed Ms. G…..he said, she said according to “a source”.
What say you, Mr. President-elect?

He’s just asking if he can forward the whitehouse phones to her residence after 9pm so she can take all the 3am calls. He wouldn’t know what to do with them anyways.

Obama’s base supported him because they didn’t like Hillary’s foreign policy. They voted for him because they wanted change.
Appointing Hillary as Secretary of State would be a slap in the face to Obama’s base. It would be very, very disappointing.

I have lost so much respect for voters of this country after they elected B.O. as president. Of course, after Bush, it shouldn’t have surprised me if Ghengis Khan was elected, should he have been around. I don’t really care WHO is Secretary of State at this point.

Posted by: Lisa Again | November 14, 2008, 5:45 pm 5:45 pm

President-elect Obama has thus far made brilliant strategic decisions. His choice of Secretary of State will be another. The time has come for America to trust a president, for a change.

Good move Barack. Get her out of the Senate then get the goons to slaughter her in your MSM every day and then fire her. She will be out on the street looking for a job in no time. Thats the way to treat women.
If she stays in the Senate and becomes Senate Majority Leader you will have to put up with a woman in the Senate. Hard for a guy like you and your goons.
Well you set the trap. Now you have to see if she takes the bait and gets caught.

This is fantastic news! Obama may turn out to be one of the best Presidents in history. He should pick McCain to be Sec of Defense. Even the most hardened liberals I know believe that would be a great idea to bring this country together and have the best running the show. Finally, America seems to be on the right track. I’m so happy to be an American.

Obama is just trying to put her in a position so she can’t run against him in 2012 if he manages to disappoint his worshipers.

Posted by: Tom NYC | November 14, 2008, 6:25 pm 6:25 pm

Why don’t you all leave this up to Obama and Clinton. They were the top contenders and the election is over and they have far better judgement in matters of State. No one is running a campaign any more. I do find it interesting that so many Obama supporters don’t support this possible decision. Now you don’t trust his judgement! Let him lead and Hillary assist if that is both their decisions.
Hillary Clinton has been a wonderful Senator for New Yorkers. We wouldn’t keep re-electing her to office otherwise. We can speak to her success as a political leader far better than those in other states.

Posted by: Richard Natoli-Rombach | November 14, 2008, 6:26 pm 6:26 pm

Just my two cents – I am a huge Obama supporter and am extremely enthusiastic (as are most Obama supporters) to see Clinton considered as Sec of State. It is a step in the right direction. The world knows her and respects her (for the most part). Most importantly, I’m glad we have an intelligent president elect who takes his cues from historical examples of what works and what doesn’t work.

It would BE AWESOME, and to the people that are saying this would be disappointing to them, grow up! She is one of the most respected women in the world, and this would be PERFECT for her. Europe, and Isreal, and Russia, all have great respect for the Clintons, and this would be the MOST perfect person for this job. I am SO excited! I really hope he does this, its icing on the cake!

Posted by: kim | November 14, 2008, 6:31 pm 6:31 pm

I TOLD YOU FOLKS OVER AND OVER AGAIN, ALL THESE STUFFS ABOUT “CHANGE” ARE MERELY TACTICS BY OBAMA TO WIN THE WHITE HOUSE. THERE IS NO MAGIC WAND THAT SOLVES ALL OF THE WORLD PROBLEMS. AT THE END OF THE DAY, YOU STILL NEED TO KNOW HOW TO PLAY TOUGH AND NEGOGIATE TO GET WHAT IS BEST FOR YOUR COUNTRY. YOU OBAMA SUPPORTERS ARE A BUNCH OF GULLIBLE PEOPLE!!!

Posted by: tom | November 14, 2008, 6:32 pm 6:32 pm

I think she is an excellent choice. She would also be good in charge of health care.
To those who are critical of Hillary, she is so far ahead of that bimbo Palin it’s ridiculous. Hillary can stand with any of them. Palin on the other hand is so incompetent she is scary. She could have wound up our President. How scary is that?

Posted by: Ver | November 14, 2008, 6:34 pm 6:34 pm

I’d prefer to see Hillary Clinton remain in the Senate, where she can become increasingly effective. She could also be a useful influence on health care policy. She has, however, no serious foreign policy experience, so I cannot consider the SofS appointment suitable for her.
Someone suggested Attorney General; yes, if she’s going to get a Cabinet job, she’d do better in that position.

Posted by: Eleonora27 | November 14, 2008, 6:36 pm 6:36 pm

I also think she would be a strong force in the senate so it would not be a bad thing for her to stay right where she is.

Posted by: ver | November 14, 2008, 6:36 pm 6:36 pm

Tom, of course there is no magic wand. The change I wanted was for the dems to take over the white house. It’s been a long 8 years and this is the change that we need.

Hillary would be a good choice, particularly considering that she’s held in such high international regard. Those of you who’re making snide comments about this not being reported as something concrete must have precious little familiarity with news and/or truth. This is a blog. The story has been reported as as concrete as it is, which right now is not definite. The developments have been truthfully blogged. When it’s a hard news story, it’ll appear as such with a headline. Get a grip.

This arrangement was agreed upon after he won the nomination and her husband went to Obama and said “if you want us to campaign for you, Hillary wants to be Sec. of State. Whats your answer? Hillary Clinton was “appointed” senator from New York when a deal was made with Senator Moynahan to take his seat. Remember her famous “listening” tour? Her re-election was a farce with her opponant being Little Ricky Lazio – another joke. Hillary has been re-elected Senator because Thomas the Turkey could also be elected Senator from New York if he would be a democrat.

Why Hillary ? Everyone expected Obama to start a new foreign policy and repair past mistakes. Hillary would be a grand mistake – she is not a professional diplomat and it was under her reign that US started on foreign policy decline. Numerous errors and lack of attention has precipitated problem that Bush administration inherited from Clintons. Fall of democracy in Russia, rise of Islamic fundamentalism and lack of genuine US preventetive policy to stop 9/11. No coherent US policy on practically anything including bungling of Middle East negotiation which involved Clintons and deepening the crisis by legitimizing Arafat as serious negotiator and neglecting real leaders that could have been brought-up to restart negotiation process. This woman lacks real knowledge and does not have a full grasp of internation political dynamics. Obama ! Bring a real diplomat, such as Holbrook, to help you with foreign policy.

It really amazes me when I hear (or read) ignorant words attacking someone.
It really shows the ignorance. Hillary would make a good Sec.of State. Who would you rather have you Naysayers? Let’s hear your choice. Don’t sit in a cubicle sneering like a rat. Speak up intelligently (or not at all as gram put it). It’s your country, Obama said
he will listen.Give him the chance, or be quiet and let him make his choices. You naysayers about everything are “exactly” what is wrong with America and why some other cultures hate us sometimes. HIllary would also make a good Ambassador, and many other offices. She is educated, sharp, has compassion, and she can put up with Billy boy (actually I like you Mr.Bill,
don’t get me wrong). Either give some real input to our leaders or back off. Real input causes real listening, mouthing off ignorantly does just that – - gets you “ignored”. Go get’em Obama.
By the way, I am a mutt too. Nat. Amer. and Irish. Don’t argue with me, you’ll lose.

“President-elect Obama has thus far made brilliant strategic decisions. His choice of Secretary of State will be another. The time has come for America to trust a president, for a change.”
What? Brilliant decisions? Hillary and foreign policy don’t belong in the same sentence. Let’s see what else… Oh, yeah… like his decision to resign his Senate seat this Sunday – Right before Congress meets to hammer out important legislation on the economy and the Auto Industry. Change? Hardly. Obama can no longer vote “Present” – but he can run from important decisions. What will he do come January 21st, when the “party is over” and he MUST make a choice on a tough issue and take a stand, popular or not? Resign?
We couldn’t be more lucky.
God Bless America.

Joe, i agree with you. i don’t think people should trash Palin and talk about her in a hateful way. while i don’t agree she is a great american i believe she is a good american. i think she was forced into the role of attack dog and had to resort to some ugly methods that she probably would have preferred not to be part of. i don’t think trashing anyone lifts us up. hate just destroys.

This lady started as first lady of the United Stated after wards she went to my home town and there became what she is know the N.Y Senator,And she still tried to became the first female President of the United States and for that I give all the credit that she diserves as what she is. Mrs Clinton aint a garbage nor sick. Probbaly your a garbage or sick minded Robby 1000 If don’t like of Mr. Obama one suggestion get the hell out of this country plain simple and God Bless America.

In the debates, Hillary Clinton didn’t even know who was the President of the Russia. She talked about landing in combat zones in Bosnia and working on the Northern Ireland peace accords, all lies. She is seen internationally as a fraud, and as a back woods lawyer who does deals, takes bribes and lies. They know her from the countless sleaze deals that came out of the Clinton white house. She would be an insult to the US as secretary of state.
The Secretary of State should be someone of impeccable integrity and decency. Someone who could command respect for their knowledge of geo politics and international relationships. Above all else, a person who is held in high esteem for their wise council and worldly wisdom.
The United States is trying to recover from the debacle of having the imbecile George Bush as head of state, a person who is universally despised around the world as an ogre. Now we are getting the Queen of Sleaze as secretary of state. Certainly Obama can do better.
I voted for change. If Hillary Clinton is secretary of state, I will vote for change again. Maybe McCain wasn’t so bad after all.

I actually kind of want her to stay in the
Senate to help overhaul the health care system in this country. I think she is uniquely positioned to do that given her interest in and expertise on the health care issue. I think there are other people who are at least as qualified to become Secretary of State.

After reading these comments I have to laugh. You democrats would still say Obama was the best president in the history of the world even if he ran the country into the ground. Not that republicans would do any better. I just think we should let history be a real judge of this man rather than making up our minds about him being great before he’s done anything to deserve such praise. I wonder if our pop-culture driven society will even notice if Obama starts screwing things up or if they’ll just stick to their political correctness driven loyalty and follow him right off the deep end…

Historically, Presidents have bypassed the Sec. of State in favor of the National Security Adviser when forming and implementing foreign policy (think of Nixon sending Kissinger to China). This might be a way to include Clinton in the administration, but in a way that doesn’t give her much authority, especially since a lot of foreign policy is run out of the Dept. of Defense with regard to the Iraq war. However, it might signify that Obama wants to reopen the Mid. East peace process, or work on European relations more, since the Clintons were well regarded as effective negotiators by the PLO and Israel, and Hilary did a lot of work negotiating between Sin Fein (spelling?) and the Northern Irish government–got her a lot of kudos in Europe, and a lot of connections.

Why is it that when we speak out we are sore losers but when you speak out your are being noble? I don’t hate BO I fear him and what he, by his words and his actions, appears to stand for. 52% of Americans wanted change and change is what they’ll get. Be careful what you wish for America…

Unfortunately, Mia, it is not known whether or not Obama wants God to bless America. For 15 years, he sat under the teaching of a pastor who said, from the pulpit, “God d*mn America!”

“The time has come for Americans to trust a president for a change”?
You’ve gotta be kidding! ALL politicians should be looked at with utmost caution, suspicion and skepticism. “Beliving in” politicians is a fool’s game.
If he wants to be re-elected, he’ll have to move smartly to the center.
Disappointing his base? Who cares? He doesn’t need the base anymore. He used them once, then flushed them, just like Ayers, Aunt Zeituni and Wright.

I speculate this decision was made many months ago, as part of the offer to pay off Hillary and get her support once Obama and ACORN had stolen the election from her. Big bucks and a sweet position has made her decide he wasn’t so bad afterall.

The whole “Republicans got us into this mess” thing is funny. The Community Reinvestment Act and Fannie/Freddie are Democrat mistakes and largely responsible for the failures of the financial markets. Democrats have been in charge of Congress for 2 years and they’ve done nothing to address these miserable failures. Republicans are not without blame here but to not recognize that Democrats and liberal agendas played a major role in getting us to where we are is simply wrong.

Posted by: G2 | November 14, 2008, 7:28 pm 7:28 pm

Hey JoeForSure, I’ve seen your posts here before and you like to pick and choose your facts to make someone you like look good and vice versa. I’m able to admit the failure of the people I like to live up to optimum expectations, are you? Or do you just think Obama is going to be perfect in every way?
Obama thought there was 57 states in our country. Did you just not know this, or do you refuse to accept it really happened, or is Obama just above it all for you? If Senator Clinton doesn’t fulfill your expecations of being a good Sec. of State based on your analysis then how does Obama fair based on the same analysis?
You elect a Politician as President then get annoyed when they act politically.
The change you voted for does not exist in this country. Can’t we just elect someone who’s not rich? Nope. Can’t we just elect someone who hasn’t lied? Nope. Can’t we just elect someone who hasn’t betrayed friends to attain the Presidency? Nope. Can’t we just elect someone who hasn’t said something bad about somebody? Nope. Can’t we just elect someone who doesn’t have some questionable monetary affiliations? Nope. Can’t we elect someone who hasn’t gone to an elite school? Nope.
I can’t wait until four years from now when all you people who belittle Hillary Clinton because she’s “hated by so many people” see the same thing of Barack Obama. Do you know what happens when you take a stand for one thing and someone else takes a stand for something else? You make enemies. Obama’s already made enemies with the Catholic church, or haven’t you been reading the news?
What will become of Obama? Will you toss him to the wind too in your search for CHANGE? Or, and lets get this straight, does it actually mean anything to you to stand up for a cause you believe in and make enemies on the way?

I didn’t have a horse in the race this year. McCain ran a poor campaign and Obama, despite his rhetorical gifts, is not up for this job either. We haven’t run decent candidates in decades. I am very fearful of the next four years. The choice of Hillary as SecState is laughable, she has no qualifications for this roles. It’s Obama’s payback to her so she can run again in 4-8 years and beat the “inexperienced” label. I know these people mean a lot to some of you, but from my perspective, we are in a very precarious position.

well at least Hillary won’t sit down with rogue dictators without pre-conditions. Our idiot president might, but at least the Sec. of State will have a little more sense. . . not much, but a little (whew!! never thought I would prefer Hillary over anyone, except maybe Hitler. . .)

It seems to me that there’s a lot of smoke and mirrors going on with the president-elect. He promises change, but puts a bunch of partisan Clinton folks in his transition team and as Chief of Staff. Then, he promises transparency in his government, but everything he’s done throughout his campaign has been locked down tighter than a drum. And did anyone see the 63-page job application you have to fill out for a job in his administration – it’s a fine example of big-brother making sure that no dissenting opinions will threaten him! BO is a great talker; but the fact is, he doesn’t have any experience that prepares him to make the decisions he will face on inauguration day. And, since the 4th, he’s changed sides on just about everything he argued for during the campaign! As far as Clinton goes, no doubt he’s baiting her with something: “keep your friends close, but keep your enemies closer”. BO is a classic, down and dirty Chicago politician, but with the speaking skill of a great preacher or late-night infomercial host. His campaign was based 100% on fear, not hope – the fear that McCain would be Bush all over again; the fear that government as it is today would fail us all; the fear that if government didn’t step in to subsidize our mistakes that we’d all perish – he made everyone scared, and then offered the snake-oil: hope and change (of course, without stating what we NEED to hope for, or what we NEED to change). This election was American Idol – the Presidential Version!

Pretty funny. Everyone making comments here is probably skating on the superficial information that has been fed to us by the media and not taking into account all the behind the scenes actions that take place in the political scenes. I hate to say it but politicians may start out being clean but few make it through the ringer. Doesn’t matter what party they’re from. There are degrees of crookedness but they’re all crooks.
Judging by the comments here we need to educate ourselves a little more and not spew so much horsecrap that just shows how ignorant and misinformed we are.
You see comments like Obama is freaking me out. It is so obvious these people are just repeating what someone else said. The word socialist scares everybody. Right wing nuts. Ultra conservatives. Both sides are so ridiculously hyped up on their misinformed ideas and buzzwords. Get a life. The politicians are getting on with theirs.

Palin was chosen because she was a conservative woman who would energize the base, myself included. Obama was chosen because he was black and would energize the liberal base. Palin has more experience than Obama, 8 years Mayor, 2 as Governor. Just because you don’t like her opinions is no reason to act like idiots. Obama is my president whether I like it or not. He has 1+ years experience as a junior senator. Those are the simple basic facts on Palin and Obama. I truly hope he is more JFK than Carter as all of our wagons are fixed to his engine. Remember, many great Americans were not experts when they lead, no matter what endeavor. It is their character I look to. Let’s hope he grows into these boots! We all live in the greatest country in the world. Let’s keep it that way.

This is hysterical. Obama is so incredibly smart. All smoke and mirrors. Of course he has no intention of naming Hillary to State. None whatsoever. Too much baggage, especially since Bill would have to disclose his foundation donors (ouch). But Obama does not want the same criticism that Hillary was never really a consideration for VP. This way, he looks like he is considering her (and having that leaked by a team that NEVER leaks). He comes out smelling like roses and he does not have to put up with Hillary. A Brilliant move.

(good thing it was a right to work state)Guess what; he became a better boss and I became a better tech and engineer. By the time we were done. I knew money, he knew mechanical, the company grew and the profits grew. Sometimes it takes ODD couples to get there.
To Mia – Obama is not descended from slaves in Old America. From Kenya (black) and America (stretch to Europe) (white). Hillary, if even on a plantation would not have had access to Obama’s descendents. And he hails from Hawaii and CHICAGO (north). But okay on that. Also, in the military, sometimes we take turns being “the Leader”, it keeps it fair.

I like Richardson and maybe there is a good spot for him but Clinton would be my number one choice. For the people complaining about Change and bringing in some of the Clinton people. I think it is a great idea and just because there are some of the same people doesnt at all mean that there wont be change in the way things are done or the way in which Obama runs the country. He is intelligent and smarter than some give him credit for. His cabinet is like a crossword puzzle and he is putting that puzzle together carefully piece by piece. You will see a lot of change right after he takes office and uses his executive power for some fast changes. I caution on over speculation on quickness of some matters. He isnt going to fix this economy nor other big policies or issues
over night or even for months and yes years. So please dont everyone start calling him a failure to quick. A lot of what he does good or bad wont be seen until after 2012. Hillary for SOS has my vote, if its Obama’s decision.

The one reason that she might turn it down would be, by accepting the post, it would be difficult for her to challenge the Presidency in 4 years time which is what she wants. However, if she is looking at 8 years, it will be good for her to take the job.

Great idea. Obama will be able to get two Secretaries of State for the price of one. His challenge will be to get Bill and Hillary to work together on foreign policy.

Fantastic selection, Hillary is a well-respected heavyweight, and she will work her heart out for the American people. She’s smart, capable, experienced, articulate, and I’m sure she’ll do an excellent job.
Smart decision by Obama, I think this is a good gesture toward her supporters too.

Hillary deserves something big after her high expectation to be president, and all of the hard campaigning, and dissapointment she has had. A third position after President and VP, is better than a Senator. Take it Hills. You will be President in eight years.

I hope every person(can’t call them AMERICANS)that voted for him… gets a life full of surprises,of course the excuse will be OLE BUSH is the cause of it.. Well, Bush was a great president,, Sarah Palin is in the future if America is still on the map. Obama should pick General Colin Powel as he already knows the game. It is obvious that Powell did not agree with the Bush administration, but I think he would be a welcome, non-partisan candidate for this job. It wouldnt hurt to ask him!
As far as Hillary, where is the non-partisan appointments that Obama promised in his campaign? The last person that Obama should pick for anything is her.

Palin was picked because mccain couldnt get the right wing loons in his party SHE COULD, too bad there are not enough of you whacks out there. FYI, she was mayor of a town of 4000 people, the meth capital of AK, she was gov for 20 months! Obama was a Harvard Law President, and grad, a STATE senator of Illinois, (more people in Chicago than the entire state of AK) for 8 years, and a UNITED STATES SENATOR for 2 years! Get it straight before you hate. Palin is a useless moron!!!

hmm, first he twists Hillary’s positions during the campaign, then he mentions she on his short list for VP but she wasn’t. Now a ‘source’ claims that she is his top candidate for Secretary of State. We know she can handle the 3am phone call. We know Hillary and Bill both supported Obama and campaigned for many months raising over $1M for Obama’s campaign. Until there is an announcement from Obama on his cabinet selections, it’s all just speculation and a poker play that might be a bluff.

Posted by: Trudi | November 14, 2008, 10:37 pm 10:37 pm

It’s a potentially brilliant move to have Clinton as Secretary of State. She is eminently qualified for the position, is well-respected around the world, and brings a contrarian opinion to Obama’s.
Maybe more importantly, he removes her from the Senate where she might become a vociferous roadblock to his health care plan.

Why is everyone focusing on Hillary for Secretary of State? Please look into Bill Richardson’s credentials and you will see that he would be the best choice for Secretary of State. In my opinion Bill Richardson would have definitely been a MUCH better Democratic nominee, it’s a shame the media focused more on the “celebrity” types as opposed to the more qualified. Bill Richardson has an extensive foreign policy resume, if you find the time for a little research I definitely recommend looking up Bill Richardson. Obama has made a VERY wise decision in considering him for such a respectable position.

I like Susan Rice or Bill Richardson for Sec of State. Leave Hillary in the Senate and let her take some credit for health care reform. I believe that’s probably what she wants more than anything else. And Hillary as Obama’s Sec of State is a sight that neither Obama’s nor Clinton’s supporters are looking forward to.

Hillary would make a fantastic Secretary of State. She is qualified, has a balanced and global perspective, is intelligent, informed, articulate, convincing, and bold. I cannot think of a better person for the position. Great choice, Mr. President-elect! I hope you offer and she accepts. Yes, Hillary would serve well as a Supreme Court Judge, but I her intellect, qualifications, personality and experience are better suited in the global role.

Posted by: Clay | November 15, 2008, 12:52 am 12:52 am

Yahoo news: She’d face a Senate confirmation hearing that would certainly probe her husband’s financial dealings — something the Clintons refused to disclose in the presidential campaign.

Posted by: dd | November 15, 2008, 2:07 am 2:07 am

I agree with above…Gen. Powell would be a far better pick. I’m not a big Hillary fan, but I also agree with the poster above that if she vacates her Senate seat, chances are that the Liberals will just vote in another Dem in her place. But, any concerns in that area are predicated upon the belief that she and the other Dems in Congress would actually oppose Obama to begin with, in order to preserve their own political power (no, they wouldn’t do it for the good of the Republic).
However, Obama’s pick of Rahm Emanuel may mean he’s trying to insulate himself not only from attacks without, but also from attacks within. If anyone cares, there is a strong connection between Emanuel and Axelrod, and he was involved with the Freddie Mac portion of the GSE/mortgage crisis.
Hopefully, these Republicans will stop being such jellyfish and stand up for a change. Being conciliatory, wimpy and ‘moderate’ hasn’t helped them a bit other than to placate the MSM. They should keep up the attacks rather than lying down. The RNC needs to use the internet the way the Communists and Democrats used the MSM against Bush-learn something from the enemy for a change.

Now, I’m not a fan of Hillary, but:
If she were planning on running for the presidency in 2012, taking the Secretary of State position would not be a good decision for her. If she took this position, she would be on Obama’s team for four years, supporting him and his policies. More than likely, he would run again in 2012, making Obama, Hillary’s opponent again. It would be hard to criticize the person who you had supported for four years.
If I were she, I would stay in the Senate and run for the Governor of New York position in 2010. This would give her a year+ experience running the State of New York before running for the presidency in 2012. This would fill in all holes in her experience for the presidential position in 2012. If Obama screws up, this would give the Democrats a good option for 2012.
One must remember, the president does not control everything. There are a lot of things that could happen in the next four years that would be out of Obama’s hands. Just ask Jimmy Carter.
Think about it.
It all depends if you are a Democrat or just an Obama fan.

If he offers Clinton Secretary of State watch his supporters heads spin. He inculcated hatred of her in them and suddenly he wants her (not just NEEDS her like he did in the general election). He thinks their blind worship of him will overcome the hatred he nurtured in their hearts for over a year. I wonder how that will work out for him.

Posted by: BikernAz11 | November 15, 2008, 9:49 am 9:49 am

I believe appointing Hillary Clinton to Secretary of State is a great idea for the following reason.
Children remember experiences differently than do adults. The United States need to win the hearts and minds of people all over the world. The United States needs to greatly expand humanitarian efforts for kids and their families. We need to provide basic health care, food, clean water, schools, Etc. For kids in war torn areas, we also need to provide mental health care for those people. Organizations such as Doctors without Borders and the Peace Corps can provide these services.
If Bill Clinton can be nominated as head for the Peace Corps and perhaps Doctors without borders. And Hillary is appointed as Secretary of State, this would be very effective in winning the hearts and minds of children and their families all over this world.
Secondly, I believe including talented Republicans in Obama’s cabinet is also a good idea. I believe the honorable John McCain could be nominated for Secretary of Veterans Affairs. The honorable Sarah Palin could be nominated as advisor within the Department of Education special education for kids. Including their voices would be beneficial to veterans and children with special needs.
Together with these appointments, may our great nation and the world benefit from these appointments.

It’s politics. He won. So “he’s the top team.” Hillary ran but lost. She didn’t get the nomination.
Was there some suspicion out there that a Black man couldn’t win? (Wasn’t Rush Limbaugh’s “Operation Chaos” based on such a scheme?”)
Anyway, why assume that in 2010 Hillary runs again for her senate’s seat? Obama broke the rule by actually getting elected. While the best place to be may be the governor’s office?
Wouldn’t it be wonderful in Guiliani and Hillary both ran for the governor’s seat in 2010?
Obama’s not going to give Hillary capital … unless he feels she’s not a threat to him. He runs again in 2012. And, he probably thinks Sarah Palin, running against him in 2012, could be easily beaten?
Sure depends on the job he does.
But what if Obama is so good, he not only gets two terms; but looks to “change the rules” to run for a third?
Of course, that would depend on the public’s mood. PLUS THE MOODS OF OTHERS who wanted to run for the presidency.
It’s wide open. And our economy may remain rotten for years and years. One of the “Engines” has always been housing. When developers are building more and more, the economic engine turns on.
But you can’t re-inflate bubbles.
And, FDR ate the GOP for lunch. We’re in a similar crisis mode, now.

Since Obama already has what, 31 of Clinton’s staffers on board, he should pick Hillary just to they’ll all feel right at home. Don’t get me wrong, I voted for Hillary. But Obama was elected on a platform of change. And I remember all of his supporters going on and on about how they wanted something different from the Bush or the Clinton administrations. I think it’s funny. Obama is trying to include Hillary and Richardson in his cabinet so in two years, if this country is in the same shape it is now, they are not forming their Presidential campaign committees.

I’m thinking Obama is tempted to go with Clinton because it may be better to have her out of the Senate, when it becomes clear we simply don’t have the money for health care right now.
At least that’s my read on it.

Posted by: Paul | November 15, 2008, 8:12 pm 8:12 pm

Melanie – the change is the direction set by the president.
For your argument to be compelling, it would mean that Hillary Clinton as SecState would replicate Bill Clinton’s foreign policy, despite whatever the president who appointed her wants to do. I just don’t think that’s a compelling argument.

Posted by: Paul | November 15, 2008, 8:14 pm 8:14 pm

When Obama came to DC 46 months ago, Tom Daschle had lost his seat. And, he gave his entire staff to Obama! Within democratic ranks, Obama was seen as “up and coming.”
Tom Daschle probably had the best senate staff of anyone.
When it comes to resumes that are written to get onto staff positions; Hillary, for this presidential run, was considered the best potential candidate to win.
But primaries are funny. Other things come into play. And, Obama won the primaries. John Edwards went and had an affair; and got his girl friend pregnant. This doesn’t count for much, but it erases John Edwards from political contention.
McCain’s staff was composed, mainly of Dubya’s staff.
Again, the shaking out process of primaries had people vying to be closest to the winner that they could get. It’s a competitive world out there.
Hillary’s staff is experienced. And, Bill Clinton’s staff is definitely experienced. Plus, people have to work!
Hit it right, and you can become as rich and inflencial as Karl Rove. Or James Baker.
And, we’ve just left the GOP leadership cycle. In the minority, now, in DC, you’d be surprised at all the things that are changing.
In particular, there was a Harvard Law Professor, who had hooked his star to the GOP. And, he left to go to Obama. Will he be rewarded, ahead? Gotta ask a lawyer. Also, not so sure that Dubya’s staff is gonna be held in too high regard. It’s almost one of those klinkers on a resume. In case you thought losses aren’t measured. In a hurting world where people are losing jobs like crazy.
How do you think people pay the rent? Or the mortgage?

sueg: It would do Obama good to get a slap in the face. I don’t give Obama credit for being intelligent. If he interviewed Hillary for Sec. of State he shouldn’t be interviewing Richardson the next day. And Hillary should not take too much time to answer him. Either or. Richardson is waiting for that job that’s why he shaved his beard. He wanted it from the very beginning of Obama’s campaigning that’s why he endorsed him.

Posted by: Mariann Pepitone | November 15, 2008, 11:34 pm 11:34 pm

Democrat All My Life: Yes, it is a good move for Obama to pick Hillary because she has the intelligence in foreign policy that he hasn’t learned yet. And that’s why he needs the Clinton people. He needs severe training in all phases of politics and that’s what their there for because they are very well experienced. Bill Clinton, Reagan, Bush and previous president’s never needed training for the job. They fell right into it.

He doesn’t have the intelligence to run this country so they are there to teach him what he hasn’t learned yet in the senate after being absent for about 145 days. Hillary is a good choice however, I think she whould turn him down.

I will ignore the ignorance that is spewed against Hillary, It would have been nice if those that despised the clintons so much would have packed up and left for 8 years so that they didn’t have to deal with the very hard hard times that we had during his Presidency!!(idiots) however, I personally would like Hillary to turn down this position. I would not leave a position where I was elected by the people to go to a position that may very well only offer four years if that. As the most recent history shows, SOS is a position that requires you to agree with the Policies of the President that you are serving under. Great example is Colin Powell, he was a great Secretary of State, but he had obvious differences with Bush and ended up leaving the post. The Chief of Staff and SOS have the highest turn over rates in an administration. I think Richardson would be the best choice. Richardson supported Obama and he should be the one to see it through come what may. As a Hillary supporter. I would prefer that she work from the Senate for the people, but stay away from Direct participation in this administration. Let the people that backed Obama serve in his administration and put their reputations on the line. Just my personal opinion. Your reputation will be based on how well the Presidency goes.

We are making too much of the issue of creating a cabinet with racial, political, or gender balance. This perpetuated rule by WASP males and so controls were put in place to broaden the process. While the public hasn’t caught up to the idea, that changed with this past primary and election cycle.
The argument for the need for diverse representation has always been that if you didn’t apply overt pressure to try to balance a cabinet or a coaching staff, then the excuss was that “I couldn’t find a qualified black, or women, or rebublican, so I had to choose a white male” because they were the only qualified candidate! With the successful capaigns of Hillary and Obama we can finally return to a meritocracy after 30 0r 40 years of reverse prejudice and injustice.
Obama needs to pick the best, most qualified candidate for every job without regard for “affirmative action” of any strip; be it ethinic, racial, or gender driven. The promise of Obama’s election is that the promise of America is finally true; not just for blacks but for latinos, Catholics, women, Jews, and minorities of every stripe.
It is a new day and I would like to see the geniuses who shape our thinking on TV acknowledge it.

While the African Americans celebrate the first African Amerian president, remember he is not black, he is not white, he is not Asian and he is not mid-Easterner. He is an American President that represents all. He said one nation, one people then he got votes based on that. If he is acting any differently now, then he cheated his way to the White House. If he is role model to black people, he should also be role model to all people. The devisive power, as Felix pointed out, should have no place in today’s world.

Hillary should think long and hard before she gave up
a powerful senate seat that is hers for the asking for
as long as she wants it, for the most tenuous job in any
new administration. Now, why would the first African
American president want to appoint his biggest political
rival Secretary of State, knowing full well it would
effectively end Hillary Clinton’s political
career, and give the African American governor of
NY, by default, the opportunity to appoint anybody
he chooses, Colin Powell, for instance, to fill her
vacant senate seat? I mean, Hillary could hardly come
back in four or eight years and realistically challenge
a sitting fellow Democrat for her old seat, now could she?
I hear the Big O is retiring her talk show, maybe Oprah
would like to be the Junior Senator from NY? For a man
that always warns everybody else to be on their guard against
racism, Barack Obama plays the politics of race very, very
well.

I am really surprised that most of the positive views of Senator Clinton becoming Secretary of State come from Republicans like Kissinger and Schwartzenegger (who warns Obama to be sure he can get along with all his Cabinet members) plus a few long-term ‘Clinton for President’ supporters like Carville and Davis.
Long-term Obama supporters express a sense of betrayal and ‘same as, same as’. Sam Donaldson warned Obama about turning his supporters away.
The media speculates about the brilliance of and/or danger of keeping one’s enemies so close. Some dare to hint that there are those better qualified.
Clinton supporters either want her to refuse or take the job as a step to running against Obama in 2012.
The most interesting reaction is the DEAFENING SILENCE of most Democrats to the choice of Clinton.
The second most interestig reaction is that of foreign governments who seem bewildered by what they see as Obama’s misstep and mixed message(I am an American living abroad). They are NOT interested in meeting one of his rivals who has to be kept close, but with a strong President who can lead the free world.
In short–the idea looks like a DUD.
Without doubt, many native New Yorkers want Clinton’s Senate seat and her status as a Junior Senator leaves her with few power options in Congress.
I doubt that she could get Congressional approval for a position on the Supreme Court with her history of Whitewater, her husband’s conflicts of interest and his impeachment leaving him barred from legal practice. Besides, there is no vacancy.
Former President Clinton’s foundation and business activities are serious obstacles for Senator Clinton wherever her appointment would need Congressional approval.
Perhaps Obama could appoint her as a special advisor or ambassador where Congressional approval would not be necessary.
William Richardson has the perfect CV for State and Dr Howard Dean would probably be the best qualified Secretary of Health.

I like that Obama is thinking of Clinton. He said he didn’t want yes people, he wanted somebody to challenge him. I think this would be a good alliance with Biden as VP.
