Does Hillary Really Want the Job?
My reporting tells me it’s likely that Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., will be Secretary of State, but no final decision has been made.
The reason? Clinton herself hasn’t firmly decided that this is the job she wants.
She’s concerned about giving up the independence she has as a senator.
She also has to worry about the $7.6 million campaign debt she still has from her presidential bid.
But the question about whether former President Bill Clinton’s activities will be a block is moving towards getting resolved.
Sources tell me a team of lawyers has been working for the last two days negotiating over this.
An agreement is emerging whereby President Clinton would disclose donations to his foundation and any future paid speaking he does would be reviewed by ethics officials, such as the White House counsel or the State Department counsel.

That 7.6 million can be forgiven. That’s not an issue. How does George know that she doesn’t want it. She isn’t talking, and neither is Obama. I hope she does take it. We need some competent people after 8 lonnnnggg years.

George
did you see the Mary Steenburgen interview this morning…
the giving up independence thing…is small…
the difference between being a Senator and SOS…isn’t significant…c’mon they both restrict independence…
this is a red herring…
she wants it and if all is clear with Bill’s dealings…she’ll be it.

I cannot see Hillary allowing all this investigation to go on with Bill if she did not want the job. Why go through all that stuff if she plans to say no. That would not make any sense to me.

Why should Obama be in the position to take credit for work that Hillary will do? She should reject a SOS offer, and maintain her independence.

Perhaps Obama will pay it off for her?

Do you think this is a one way street. You are so sure that Hillary will do no wrong and only good that Obama will get credit for. What about the wrongs that she or Bill may do that Obama will have to take the heat for. You are so negative and one sided. I am glad the majority of Americans do not have the tunnel vision that you have.

She basically can have any position she wants. Maybe she is looking at her options and how it will effect her and her family. Hillary has helped Obama and Obama is fair. Really I believe Hillary can name her price. She helped with this Obama victory.

I feel Hillary’s selection as SOS is a great thing for our country. It shows the type of man President elect Obama will make. He is choosing his cabinet very wisely and will prove to be one of our best Presidents ever. I only hope history does not repeat its self, as he is an avid fan of our Great Late President Lincoln.

I just read your book when you were part of Bill Clinton’s Administration and I get the impression you left with feelings if disappointment. I hope so, you are an exceptional reporter.

Hope she accepts the job. A fundraising dinner with guest speakers Obama and Bill Clinton should clear up most of her campaign debts.
Also, this thing about her independence is stupid — not sure why anyone would even consider this as a problem — I mean secretary of state is huge, she is going to be the key player here, policies would have been laid out and she like Obama will have to work within the guidelines; same as if she remained a senator and helped with health care – she still have to work within the guidelines set out by the party for any project.
I agree with GS, she should/(will) take the job.

Now, I feel sure George is going to do what George always does and that is not get the facts straight. I hope she does get the job and then we will have no problem in voting against Obams in 2012. This is such a media driven story line. It seems that political analysts are taking lessons from the hosts of Entertainment Tonight, creating and focusing on drama and intrigue. Why shouldn’t Obama ask Clinton to be SoS? Why should we even focus on what Bill Clinton did or didn’t do months ago? Even as Obama seeks change, he simply cannot plunk down a bunch of new faces around him. He (and they) will not be taken seriously by the Congress, the House, or the International Community. He has to find people who have solid track records in their field to be surrounded by the best advisors. Since Clinton was the last democratic administration, and it was only 8 years ago (although it seems forever), it is only natural to pick some people who can hit the floor running. Find another story line, media, this one isn’t catching.

Is Hillary capable of doing anything without creating circus level of drama and histrionics and me-me-me-ism? And she wonders why she’s the single most polarizing politician alive in America. She wonders why she has a 49% national disapproval rating. She wonders why she completely alienates the base… of her OWN party. Hillary simply lacks a basic understanding of the worth and the grace of quiet dignity. Everywhere she goes, more than any politician alive in America, she leaves a wake of partisanship and division.

If this were based on merit, it is simple, inarguable fact that Hillary wouldn’t even crack a list of the top 100 most qualified candidates.
Bill Richardson, John Kerry, Jack Reed, Richard Holbrooke, Richard Danzig, Wes Clark, Rand Beers, Chuck Hagel, and Richard Lugar are just a handful of the many, many dozens of candidates who are possessed of far greater relevant expertise.
And as far as pure, natural diplomatic skill… how can anyone argue that Hillary is skilled at detente when everywhere she has gone her entire adult life she has left controversy, enmity, polarization, bitter partisanship, and division?
Other than on pure Machiavellian terms, there are no grounds on which Hillary is well suited for this job.

Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton actually do like and respect each other, and they have obviously realized they will work well together on important foreign policy issues.
Hillary has been an international figure since she was First Lady and she did a great deal for women, children and families around the world, including in Afghanistan, Central Europe, Israel and Central America (to name a few).
She is perfect for the position of Secretary of State.

Hillary is a natural for the job of Secretary of State. Just look at her resume and all the work she has done at the international level dating back to the early 1990′s. She started VITAL VOICES and that’s just one of her many accomplishments to help women and girls in countries like Afghanistan.

It’s tough to give up a safe Senate seat for a cabinet post in someone else’s administration. But I think she will accept it, after working it through with Obama. And I think they will be a superb team on foreign policy. Obama’s vision and inspiration blended with Hillary’s experience, expertise and international accessibility and goodwill will be sensational!

I hope she takes it, she’d be great. Obama is a generous person, and will ignore any campaign attacks by her. How much less $$ will she make as SOS, that it would make a difference in how she pays off her campaign debt? I think we’d have the world in the palm of our hands with this team. GO Obama!

Can someone please tell me, other than Obama himself, where the change part comes in? So far, he has staffed his White House with the Clinton Administration. How is that change? His administration did nothing! And dont give me that spill about balancing the budget either! All you liberals know is was the Republican controlled Congress that got that done. I mean come on, all the man did as President was get to know his interns a little bit better! We didnt even have a President for the last 4 years of his term! Even his former advisers said that. How can you even consider Clinton when she so strongly disagreed with his foreign policy ie. not talking to your enemies? Who will ever forget her “sniper fire” lie? I don’t care what Obama’s motives are, he’s not starting out very well. We don’t need the Bill and Hillary soap opera. We’ve had enough of it! We need to get off to a smooth start and bringing back old controverial retreads is not the kind of change I was anticipating. Clinton is my home state senator and she hasn’t done squat. Of course, I always knew she was a carpetbagger and only used New York as a stepping stone. As far as I’m concerned, President-elect Obama has already started off on the wrong foot. Change you can believe in? Based upon his decisions thus far, don’t count on it!

HRC would take a job as a bearded lady in the circus if it gave her the attention she so badly desires and needs. She is too egotistical and power-hungry to turn this post down!

If Sen Clinton were to accept the post, she is in a good negotiating position. But if it is too much hassles for the President it is not worth it. Working as a Senator may give Sen Clinton more freedom.

Ya know I thought Obama was going to bring “Change”, but he’s using all of the Clinton connections. If I wanted that I would have voted for Hillary. Oh wait, I did vote for Hillary. I think Hillary should stay where she’s at and Obama build his own political empire instead of ripping off the Clintons.

Sure she wants it but her narcissist persona doesn’t want to appear that she does. It would be a big blow to her ego if she went for it and lost, do the math that would be her second loss this year!

Bill Clinton and his baggage drags Hillary down again?
She should have kicked him to the curb a long time ago, so her vetting is easy.
This should be about Hillary’s accolades and have nothing to do with Wild Willy and his baggage.
Bringing Bill into Hillary’s job, seems like sand cave dwelling….get her a birka.

I really think the paranoia about the Clintons ought to qualify as a mental illness at this point.
It says an awful lot about her character that she would even consider taking this job at all.
But I’m sure the Hillary-haters aren’t going to let anything like truth get in the way of their desperate need to believe she is evil.

Question to Clinton shall not be who are the Major donors but who are all the donors to him and his foundation? Since the Hillary wants to be the Secretary of State the question that needs to be put to Bill and Hillary is: Did Bill Clinton or his foundation take any money from Albanian Groups which are lobbying for Kosovo independence from Serbia? This will be one of the first challenges that administration will be dealing with!

change doesn’t mean a change in people it means changing people.
It means a change in tone, a change in policies a change in how we see each other and treat each other.
I am so sick of those both on the left and the right claiming there can be no change if the people chosen are not unknowns. This is the silliest, stupidist, shallowest way of looking at this I could imagine. Think?
I hope our new president picks the best and the brightest regardless of whether they are new on the scene or not. That is just TOO shallow. But sometime it seems like shallow is what we have become….

I would never take a job with mafia Obama. The man is so resentful. There are so many ghosts in this man and Michele that no one in their perfect mind would want to be associated with this man. He would betray his own mother and his kids, for God’s sake. Never Obama !

Where are the NEW faces? I don’t see them. Where is the CHANGE? I don’t see much or any change in the faces surrounding Obama as advisors. All through the campaign, the Obama advisors were the OLDEST WASHINGTON HANDS.
There is nothing new or different about Obama.

All the people complaining about that this is not real change needs to shut up. I voted for obama but i didnt expect him to bring inexperienced neophytes just because he promised change. Brining in new senators without any experience and giving them high positions would certainly be “change” but it would be idiotic.
What he is trying to do is to put the best people around him. He has dealt differently with his former rivals biden, clinton and lieberman and that is a little bit of change but i didnt vote for him because of it. I knew mccain finished 894 out of 899 and i just didnt want another idiot who could not think things through but only react to things emotionally.

I don’t really want her to take the job. Kennedy isn’t long for this world and only some one of her stature can fill the void. I really think it is best if a significant party leader remains as an independent ‘conscience of the party’to remind presidents of the limitation of their importance. Hmmm… sounds a lot like the function of the British system doesn’t it?

NAH!!! She doesn’t want it???? That’s why Bill is letting them look at his BOOKS!!!! Give me a break George!! If you can’t do your job better MOVE OVER!!!

OK..Hillary has no experience at all period. She ran for Senate in New York because she could not make it in Arkansas. Other than dodging sniper bullets in Bosnia (LOL) her experience is nothing to be the wife of a ex President with a lot of baggage. If she takes the job she is done. Obama wil fire her and her political career over.Remember JFK did the same with LBJ , he kept his adversaries close. To the demise of JFK , LBJ became the next President and father of the Welfare system.

Does she want the job??? Of course she does! Its her chance to stay in the limelight and make more money! She could write a book or something, or maybe a movie! Yeah! Thats it! The possibilities are endless! Some dufus out there would buy it!

i believe in obama i think hillary is good for that job, so if she is inperience while the work she did when she was in the white house help clinton, that while some people wanted her to run ,because she is a smart woman omaba would not fire her unless she cant do the job he believe she can do,hillary you&bill do the job omaba want, do not try to take over, because i believe in you and bill, i like all 3 in the white house it could be a big change, because the people need help badly i believe in obama

I just heard that Kennedy now wants Hillary to be a major leader in HIS health care initiative IF she stays in the Senate. I suspect everything is just a game and Obama gets credit for “giving” her her due. Stay away from Obama Hillary. Obama is bad news.

VIA Newsweek
Another Clinton Administration veteran looks tapped to become the first black
Attorney General. He actually seems like a candidate Hillary Clinton would
have picked had she won this year — which makes us ask just how much “change”.
Obama intends to bring if most of his Cabinet picks are all Clinton
Administration people. Not that we’re complaining, but it’s a stark contrast to the rhetoric of his campaign in the primaries where he was all about distancing himself from the Clintons, and now it looks like just about every post will be filled with Clinton people. All of this might be a good indicator of “change” meeting ‘”reality”.

Sheesh! They think we were all born yesterday! Bill Clinton has body guards, staff and reporters following him around, not to mention he’s the ex-prez of eight years, she the senator, and their life is an open book. We are expected to believe that Bill Clinton needs to be vetted? There’s something more to this than meets the eye. Instead of it being a bone thrown to her, it’s more like a ‘stinky bone’..
Posted by: Susy | November 20, 2008, 10:45 am 10:45 am
It might be a great job if she were not working for BHO. If things go
right BHO will get the praise, if things go wrong she will be to
blame. I have no trust in BHO. He can fire her at any time. I hope
you realize by now you cannot believe what BHO has to say.

All during the campaign we heard about how bad the Clintons were YET
nobama has surrounded himself with ex-Clinton people. His staff &
appointments are ex-Clinton people. What is wrong with this picture??? If Hillary were the prez, I don’t think she would appointment these people, I think she would have brought in NEW
people….. WHAT CHANGE??????????? Nobama, no matter how many ex-Clinton people you bring in, you will never be as good as Bill & Hillary – get over it!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Lucero | November 20, 2008, 11:00 am 11:00 am
Hillary would be making a big mistake by affiliating with this scumbag. He is going to blame whatever goes wrong on someone else, and all the dirty work will be done by flunkies like his VP, or people like Hillary if she takes that job. She will get all the blame and none of the praise from an Obama Regime.
She should just stay in the Senate where she can do the “people’s work”, not Obama’s work! She won’t have to take orders from that jerk.
Posted by: For Barry | November 20, 2008, 11:05 am 11:05 am
100% agree ! That’s right! Obama will never be anywhere close to a Bill Clinton, or a Hillary Clinton……… he will have to use others to do his job for him, just like GWB has done for eight years.
Who will be O’s Karl Rove? Please God, don’t let it be one of the Clinton’s!
Surely, they know better than to associate their name with a scumbag and mobster’s toady, like Obama! Whatever disasters happen on his watch, you can be sure he will be looking for a scapegoat to blame it on.

I think that would be a great choice! For Hillary to be secretary of state! At least Obama well have the votes of Hillary’s 8 million people behind him! Then Obama can actually say that the u.s.a. is really working together hand in hand….Please say yes Hillary! For our country…please……let there be peace…..Well done my good and faithful servant……saythe the lord!
Posted by: lolo | November 20, 2008, 11:28 am 11:28 am
Why wouldn’t Obama pick her? She has the experience he lacks and knows he needs to succeed for the next 4, possibly 8 years. I say she takes it!
Posted by: ra | November 20, 2008, 12:03 pm 12:03 pm
Someone mentioned “all the dirty work will be done by flunkies like his VP, or people like Hillary if she takes that job” I agree with this statement, but on the brighter side, who’s the say that she won’t put her finger in the pie and make suggestions Obama couldn’t even phantom? With her experience and knowledge, who’s to say she won’t be running the country behind closed doors? Granted, Obama may take the credit for everything done right and blame his funkies for all done wrong, but at least the 542,000 people that just lost their job in the last week, and the many more in the last year, might get back on their feet quicker than we know.

one more thing…
This is a situation where she’ll be damned if she does and we’ll be damned if she doesn’t…
I believe we stand a better chance with her accepting the position than Obama finding some idiot to do the job.

Hillary as Secretary of State? I hope she can handle the…sniper fire! What was Obama thinking? How can he even consider her after she brutally slammed his foreign policy judgements? And here we go again! Bill’s international connections and business dealings have complicated her being selected. It’s never easy with them. It’s always a soap opera. Please! No more Clintons and no more Bushes! I expected better than this from Obama. If this is a sample of more to come, his judgment isn’t as good as I thought.

First, all we really know is that Obama and Clinton met in Chicago. All the rest is media driven unattributed rumor and gossip.
Second, how can Clinton still be undecided? She’s had months to think about being in Obama’s cabinet. In fact, she publically stated that it was not a good idea to take experienced senators out of congress to fill cabinet positions. She ran a bad campaign. How will she run the State Department? She can’t make up her mind about joining the cabinet. (She’s loving the publicity though) Finally, she is making Obama look weak by letting this play out in the media. HE SHOULD CUT HER LOOSE!
Posted by: B. Bear | November 20, 2008, 1:17 pm 1:17 pm
I believe that Obama is just playing it safe by vetting Bill. He seems to plan every move and choice he makes and is approaching his cabinet selections this way as well.

I guess it could be idiotic but thats still unknown. I know that mccain is an idiot and obama is an unknown. To me unknown was still the safer choice after seeing bush being a president.

Good point dheep.
Don’t get me wrong, I voted Obama because I didn’t want another 4 years of Bush or worst in the office, however, his inexperience does intimidate me a bit which is why I hope Hillary takes the position as SOS.
Granted, Obama may blame her for all that goes wrong, but she’s strong enough to accept it and deal with it. Her experience in the office with Obama’s points of view (excluding the Foreign Policy debate) could bring America back to the state it needs to be. Without her, just imagine how much more can go wrong.

Bush & Cheney saw a modern day Hitler for what he was, & they preempted him.
They had the Smarts, Experience & understanding of History to see the obvious.
McCain also understood this, & History, and Much More.
You, and most of the rest of the world are “Clueless”.
Your little “Clueless” statement meant ‘Nothing’.
Therefore, we are back to the ‘Inexperienced, Neophyte Senator’ again (who unfortunately is now our president).
Chow Child.

George has good sources and we all know their names. At the end of the day this is all a ploy, though, to make it look like Hillary doesn’t come off as really wanting the job, but that it’s Obama that really wants her in the job and is successful at selling her on it. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, just another example of the propaganda power of the office of the Presidency.

Yes— I can see it now! Hillary as SOS. The first thing Obama will do on Jan.20 will be to put in a hotline to Slick Willie’s office in Harlem. So the first time the s*****t hits tha fan, he can get right on the hotline and ask ” Hey boss, what do I do”?

It says a lot about our former Slick Will President that his business dealings automatically have to reviewed by ethics committees. And to think he was our President once. What an embarrassment. What will happen to Hillary once her anchor husband is caught again in some tryst?
