McCain = Secretary of Defense

I have some doubts that McCain would actually be placed in Obama’s cabinet since there seemed to be a personal dislike between them that could make it tough to have a functional working relationship. But I do see a chance of him making a good defense secretary. He knows where the Pentagon’s skeletons are buried. The President would still set the big policy directions, which is where many Obama supporters opposed McCain. Interestingly, it is looking VERY likely that it isn’t President Obama who will be setting a timetable for withdraw of troops from Iraq – it looks like President Bush is being forced into it by the Iraqis themselves (per the security pact that looks headed for approval this week).
On a technical note, I would seriously doubt any big bipartisan announcement would be made prior to December 2 – it would be a tactical mistake to raise any Republican’s political appeal to independents prior to the Georgia Senate runoff.

Steve_NJ: “We do not want to spend another 100 years in Iraq.”
The Secretary of Defense would not have the power to make that call. They follow the President’s orders or they resign to “spend more time with my family.” There is an outside chance McCain would be an effective tool under Obama’s command.

McCain is a loose cannon under pressure as he displayed during the election – a minor cabinet post at best and even that is unlikely.

I don’t see McCain as Secretary of Defense. While I respect him for meeting with the President Elect and hope that the two of them can work together on issues like climate change, I think McCain is far too much of a bellicose chest thumper for DOD. Seems like Secretary Gates is non-partisan and is on the same page as Obama.

We need to get the troops home NOW.
PEBO is not qualified to put troops on harms way or be the CIC. We have no time for OJT.
I’d rather give up than to lose 1 soldier unnecessarily.
McCain is a RINO.
The 100 years in Iraq was a statement that many didn’t have the mental capacity to understand. How long have we had bases in Germany? Japan? (I love ID ten Ts.)
We voted for BO. Now we deserve what we get. More taxes. A crushed economy. A lack in our ability to compete in a global market. And what used to be the Best health care system in the world.
The government will soon own many industries.
And boy do I understand how BADLY the new Administration needs us Conservatives. We are the ones that get to pay for other folks Mortgage. And someone elses new cars.
