Grandpa Joe & 10-year-old Finnegan Hold Biden Family Press Conference

ABC News’ Matthew Jaffe reports: On Election Eve, Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., came to the back of his plane for the first time in weeks to field questions from reporters.

On Election Day, he did it again. But with a new wrinkle.

A slew of Biden family members, 36 to be exact, accompanied the Democratic vice-presidential nominee to Chicago today on his flight from Richmond. And one of them, his 10-year-old granddaughter Finnegan, eventually strayed to the back of the plane where reporters sit.

So the man known as “Pop” had to come track her down, leading to an impromptu press conference.

On the day when he might be elected the nation’s next vice president, Biden said he has Finnegan to thank for talking him into accepting the running mate offer from Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill.

"She’s the one who pushed the hardest for me to be vice president, didn’t you?" Biden asked his eldest granddaughter.

“Well, first, it’d be really cool,” said Finnegan, daughter of Biden’s son Hunter. “And he and Barack Obama will make a difference."

Biden, who noted he has not talked to Obama yet today, said he would be watching returns closely this evening.

"The polls are going to close and by 9 o’clock Eastern time you will have Virginia, well into, you know, Virginia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Ohio, by that time,” he said. “You know, and you’re going to get a pretty — you’re going to know whether you’re going to be up, you know, a long night or if it’s going to be a short night."

But despite the Democrats’ lead in the polls, the superstitious Blue Hen did not want to make any predictions.

"I think it’s just so, so presumptuous as a candidate, you know, to let yourself think that you know what the voters are gonna do,” he said. “I know it sounds silly, but I really mean it."

If the Democratic ticket wins, Biden’s wife Jill promised her husband that he could get a dog, but today Biden refused to even talk about what kind of dog he might get.

“We’re not there yet,” he warned. “The deal’s not closed yet in terms of this one issue.”

If Biden does win, he would move from Wilmington to the Naval Observatory in Washington, the vice president’s residence, but other than that, the Delaware lawmaker said he didn’t think his life would change all that much.

“If we were to win, I don’t know that it would change a lot,” he said. “In the sense that, just being a different locus, I guess."

Instead of the senator traveling back to Wilmington every day on Amtrak, he would be living down in the nation’s capital. And some of his family members would now be making the trek south to Washington, D.C.

“I guess it’d just be flipped, you know, Beau and Hallie and my grandchildren and my mother would be coming the other way," he said. "So I don’t think, I don’t really – in terms of the family, I don’t think it would – in a sense, it may be a little easier if we were to win.”

One Biden family member who will not be joining the clan in Chicago tonight is Biden’s aforementioned son Beau, the Delaware attorney general who is currently training in Texas ahead of a year-long deployment to Iraq. Biden noted that Beau was offered the chance to fly to Chicago to watch the election results with the family, but turned it down.

"This kid is a different brand of kid,” Biden said. “His, you know, he said he’s gonna watch it with the rest of the troops."

At one point on the flight, another of the senator’s grandkids, Beau’s 4-year-old daughter Natalie, also came down the aisle to see what was going on.

“Well, I’m gonna leave you guys to this press conference,” concluded the senator eventually, leaving his two grandkids to face the media throng as he headed back towards the front of the plane.

In the past two months on the trail, Biden has often quoted Finnegan in his stump speeches. After outlining something his Republican rival Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., has said or done, Biden – as Finnegan would say – exclaims, “Hello?!Whoa?!”

And it might not be long before Finnegan is on the stump herself quoting her grandfather. Asked what she wants to be when she grows up, Finnegan replied, “President.”

At least the families of the democrats do connect and talk to one another – it wasn’t so when McCain dumped his first wife, and even today, they may be civil and don’t make comments openly, but in private, well…..who knows?

If McCain loses, he has no one to blame but himself. He allowed a dirty campaign of personal destruction to be carried out in his behalf. His legendary “poor judgment” was manifest in Palin, associations with Rev. Hagee, G. Gordon Liddy, Phil Gramm.

We all need to give this whole thing a break and look at what we really do not like about
how this election was run.
1.Everyone needs to come forth with their information when requested and not have it delayed.
2 Everyone either goes public financing or we stay with the monies provided by the election committee. The country is in real bad shape and money was thrown around like candy on Halloween.
3.More open communications about donations, no prepaid credit cards and third party evaluation of were the money came from. This is so important that self monitoring is not enough.++
4.No money to be spent on large events in order to show big crowds. Just looks wrong.
5.Complete bias in the news coverage of one candidate vs another. This got to the point of nothing but free advertising. Needs to be evaluated in regards to violating laws.
6.Lack of work by the candidates on their real job and that being a senator. Return you salary and cancel your benefits should be the policy if you are going to away from the job this much.
7. Total invasion in to private lives of candidates. What business of ours is it that Palin’s daughter is pregnant. My god we do not any place in the country we could put the mothers of children who gotten pregnant this year at a young age or not married. We are electing the candidates not their families.
8. Financial incentives should not be given to get people to register. Smells like what it is and that is buying votes.
I am sure others would have many more regardless of choice of candidate.

At least obama has the proper intelligence and demeanor to restore our foreign relations and get us out of our current unilateral and isolationist stance.

Anyone that shuts others out saying they are closed minded is in fact, closed minded themselves. You cannot call someone close minded because they choose to vote for whom they think is right for our country. Each of the candidates have qualities that would be good for America. You just now need to put pen to paper and vote for the lesser of two evils (or did what I did and write someone in). I live in Illinois so my vote pretty much doesn’t count – but I went out and VOTED anyway.

The depth of hate from the right is truly amazing, especially coming from folks that claim they are Christian…I don’t recall that Jesus talked like this, but maybe these folks aren’t really Christian like they say. Maybe they aren’t patriotic, either. I mean, to hate someone because of their color isn’t very patriotic…for years, the US has been very democratic in how they spill blood…our armed services have had a lot of dead minorities. So…they are good enough to die for you who have never served (Like Bill O’Reilly, and Sham Hannity)…but they aren’t good enough for anything else.
Well, that’s down right un-American. I’d say, if you think like that, you are really more like a facist…more like a Soviet than an American. SOme are more equal than others?
I don’t want to listen to a bunch of cowardly, anti-American, un-patriotic soviets bashing my country. I wish you’d all go someplace else, because America isn’t where you really want to be.

If republicans didnt present themselves as wholesome, pure, and the only voters who beleive in God. And didnt walk around with there heads stuck in the sky as the moral authority of the world. Then her teenage, unwed daughter getting pregnant wouldnt be such a big issue.
Its a case of pratice what you preach,
If the Obama daughters were in the same position, the republicans would be using it in attack ad’s to show good, honest god fearing REAL AMERICANS that the Obama’s dont represent there family values, or that they didnt believe in the word of God.
If you dont believe that, you are an idiot.

There’s nothing wrong with spending money in politics. McCain made his choice, Obama made his. It is free speech to donate to whichever candidate you prefer, that’s been decided over and over again in the courts.
Media “bias” is based on whether you believe they are supporting your candidate or not.
Candidates and their families basically forfeit their right to privacy to some degree. Kids should generally be off limits, but Palin cannot preach abstinence and then have a glaring example of the inefficacy, in her own house, go unnoticed.
I agree that Senators and Governors and so forth should not collect their public salary while not on the job.

Someone is just upset because their world view is shattering and their psychological problems are surfacing. An uneducated and simple mind where their world is viewed in a monochromatic fashion based on extreme ideology, which is why they are attracted to those types, such as Bush and McCain which display similar traits.
As with all human behavior since the earliest recorded history of man, fear of the unknown has lead to many different manifestations that defy logic, from supernatural to benign. We are witnessing many of these manifestations within the blog entries circulating around this election and even espoused by the McCain campaign itself.
You would think that in a civilization as advanced as ours, such irrational thoughts would have been long since eradicated.. and yet, in many ways, many are still living in the past, unable to grasp reality and move towards the future. It is those who have slowed and in some cases prevented further advancement in almost all areas of human endeavor. We can only hope that some day, perhaps not in our generation, but in generations to come, that we can overcome these obstacles advance our species into what is currently only the realm of gods.

Posted by: Concerned American | November 4, 2008, 5:07 pm 5:07 pm

Maybe they aren’t patriotic, either. I mean, to hate someone because of their color isn’t very patriotic.
Lets see these so called patriotic christians, as John McCain once put it prior to needing their votes. Are nothing more than evil, vessels of hate and intolerance.
They use the word of god for there own personal gain, and arent really christians. Because as true god fearing people, we are taught not to hate, and to love our neighbors. No matter what race, sex,or who they have sex with.
But again these are people, who ancestors used the word of God, to make africans beleieve it was God’s will that they were treated poorly, and that they were slaves, so i’m not suprised that they are still hateful demons.
If Jesus came back today, as a black or muslim man. These so called christians would kill him, and hang him from the highest tree.

I just love Joe Biden! And little Finnegan is the so cute and sweet. I look forward to the Biden Vice Presidency and hope that Finnegan and her sibling(s) enjoy many happy times in the Vice Presidential pool.
That said, did anyone notice that Joe kept petting Finnegan, on top of her head, pet pet, under her chin, pet pet. And it all started when he was talking about getting a dog. Heh, heh. And throughout the rest of the video, he just kept on petting and stroking, petting and stroking… poor kid! She looks increasingly uncomfortable as he goes on and on, petting her. Head, chin, neck. Head, chin, neck, he just wouldn’t stop. I’ll bet he wasnt even conscious of it. Poor little Finnegan, haha. I coudn’t stop laughing. You go, Joe! Little Finnegan for President!!!
