Hillary on Track for Nomination After Thanksgiving
ABC News can report that former President Bill Clinton’s financial disclosure issues that once seemed an obstacle to Sen. Hillary Clinton’s appointment as secretary of state have been worked out.
An aide to President-elect Obama says that everything is on track for Clinton’s nomination to be the nation’s top diplomat, though an announcement will not come until after Thanksgiving.
The aide tells ABC News that no national security announcements will likely come until after that holiday.
Hillary Clinton and Obama, once fierce primary rivals, first spoke face to face about her serving in Obama’s Cabinet last week in Chicago. The aide said they have since had other discussions about what they both hope for her to achieve in that post.
The complex web of international business dealings involved with Mr. Clinton’s personal business, his presidential library and his charitable endeavors through the Clinton Foundation, had created complications and possible conflicts of interest for his wife. But the Obama and Clinton teams, negotiating with many former officials of the Clinton White House — such as David Kendall, John Podesta and Cheryl Mills — have reached an agreement.
Other announcements — perhaps ones related to Obama’s economic team — may come before the holiday.

I wish she would just stay in the senate…I wish that Obama would not choose her! Change was the word that moved this country…Clinton’s are not about change, they are about power. This will be a bad idea.

After voting for President-elect Obama, I am even more confident that he has the confidence, boldness and vision to restore America and reinvigorate not only our economy, but also our reputation around the globe. The reported offer to Hillary Clinton has reinforced my belief in him. I originally supported Senator Clinton for the nomination. Despite the animosity and negative passions she engenders among some peope, I think she is an incredible force of nature. President-elect Obama recognizes her talents and isn’t afraid to employ them in the pursuit of his vision and goals. President-elect Obama not only possesses great vision, but he has proved that he isn’t blinded by emotions; is well aware of history, reconcilation, compromise and pragmatism.

I believe Hillary Clinton will make an excellent secretary of state and would be a big help to Obama in foreign policy. Also, should Biden who has a heart condition, if something should happen, Hillary could be selected as VP. However, I hope everyone stays healthy. There are a lot issues Obama didn’t speak about while he was campaigning. The change in Washington didn’t take place as stated on the platform. And the reason for Clinton’s people is that Obama is not experienced enough to run this country and he will be trained by them. I hope he doesn’t pick Bill Richard for a job in his cabinet or John Kerry. That would not be wise.

Sara: There is no change. The outsiders that were insiders at one time are coming back. However, Hillary is a smart woman and can teach Obama the tricks of the trade that he hasn’t learned in the senate. The people that Bill Clinton had in his administration are well experienced in the field of politics and will give Obama some excellent training. I didn’t vote for Obama but we have to acknowledge that he will be sworn into office and go from there.

Wouldn’t it be nice to hear something nice and positive from the Conservatives. I guess it’s hard after 8 years of negativity and scary tactics. Brainwashed by the Bush illuminati. Obama is doing this country and the world a huge favor with his strong message of change and the educated people that surrounds him.
Posted by: Dem | November 20, 2008, 11:25 pm 11:25 pm
For those who are upset with Obama about his “change” message, good grief, he had former Clinton staffers on his campaign, so why wouldn’t you expect him to have them in his cabinet?!?! He also took money from former lobbyists, and from corporations, as well as just appointing Daschle to his cabinet, and Daschle’s whole family is involved in lobbying, so what…you have only yourselves to blame for being so naive. Just be thankful that Obama has the sense to use Clinton’s blueprint for success. BC is extremely intelligent, and he had very bright people working with him. BO is smart enough to know what he doesn’t know.
There isn’t so much drama surrounding the Clintons. It is pure media driven ratings based. There was so much peace and prosperity during the Clinton years, if the Repubicans hadn’t delved into BC’s personal foilbles, the media would have had very little negative to report, and the negativity gets folks to salivating for more more more…
Hillary will be a great SOS, if indeed this comes to pass. Hillary’s Senate office is said to be the “envy” of the hill because of its organizational efficiency, and loyalty based work ethic. Hillary is great! She has served on the Armed Services Committee with distinction. She knows most world leaders by their first names, and she is very well respected around the world. Women hold her in very high esteem, especially after her speech in China when she spoke up for womens rights as human rights. Her co-workers, both Dem and Reb. praise her masterly grasp of policy, both domestic and foreign. I tend to believe the people who actually know her, rather than those who cling to the mass produced image of her.

SKW: And who do you think he should have picked for secretary of state. Bill Richardson would be the wrong choice,in fact I read that he wasn’t that good. Bill Clinton was a great president and Obama chose his people so he would learn politics and foreign policy. Better to choose experienced people than not. I didn’t vote for him but I am glad he chose Hillary for the secretary of state. She is a smart woman and knows politics inside out.

Dear Mariann Pepitone, Sara and Co.,
I am rather tired of this “where is the change” monologue from people like yourselves. The CHANGE is in the attitude! The CHANGE is in appointing your talented former rival to work with you rather than basking in glory as she slid into obscurity, as used to be the culture of American politics. And this is only week Two. Let’s keep tab, you and I, shall we? And all that despite people like you doing all you could to block progress in our politics.

How have Pres. Clinton’ deal been worked out so well-and so quick?
I think because the MSM, who now rank just below lawyers, and are as reliable as the weather man, GOT IT WRONG!
just like the clinton’ taxes.
remember the MSM and the clinton tax watch?
Oh that was suppose to be a BIG BALL

i was a supporter of sen. clinton, and supported her in her support of obama
and voted for him. because
‘NOWAY,NO HOW, NO MCCAIN AND PALIN”
and i was resigned for sen. clinton to go back to senate, and cont’ her good work,
so i ask, WHY WOULD OBAMA KEEP PESTERING
SEN. CLINTON?
she lost to him, then they wanted her to campaign for him. which she did.
what is the results now. “the only opponent in american politics to campaign for a rival as much as sen. clinton did for obama.
SHE WILL MAKE A GREAT SOS! will probally end up being the best we have ever had, in modern times.
but i still cannot understand why obama
wanted sen. clinton?
I think if she had turned him down for sos, he would have tried to give her something else. can’t figure?
i wonder how bill richardson, and kerry feel? they were always in his corner,

The FACT, susanna, is that little is going to change in Washington in the best interests of the people of this country (e.g. Rahm Emanuel made sure to stack the D’s with pro war congressional candidates in 2006, and Ms. Clinton is a HAWK…not to mention the illegal and ill-advised “bailouts” the D’s are so fond of) and the D vs. R fable will continue in our single party political system. Wait it’s all Clinton’s fault, no Bush’s, no Reagan’s. Actually Congress controls Washington and both sides of the isle prefer to shamelessly rip off the American people. Real change would begin with the end of the illegal Federal Reserve Bank, instant rejection of all provisions of the Patriot act, imprisonment of all responsible for the illegal invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, etc. I doubt this will happen as most of Congress has voted for these criminal acts and probably won’t prosecute themselves!

I’m just fine with the Clinton appointment if it happens but I can’t believe the whining coming from the far left and progressives. They seemed to think they would see dramatic change from a guy who’s “pragmatic” , “practical” and who believes in change in “incremental changes”. Duh. Obama voted 97-98% of the time with his party- that’s not a risk taker even McCain did 90%. Bill Clinton was about hope and change when he rode in on a white horse for his first term and he came in with a record of being pro-business and fairly conservative in Arkansas and all sorts of rumours about his womanizing and gee, surprise surprise- what did we get and the far left hated the fact that Clinton turned out to be more conservative then they had hoped. A candidate’s record does say something about how they will govern and there is nothing in Obama’s that indicates he would make any dramatic changes (other then Obama or McCain would be change from George W) and in fact McCain’s record and personality would be more indicative of someone more likely to do so. Obama’s change will be symbolic – the first African American president, bringing on board his rivals and throwing us a bone here and there on issues like campaign reform while he set a horrendous precedent by refusing public financing. So wah wah.

After all the speculation as to why Obama would choose the controversial and unqualified Clinton for SOS–the third highest Cabinet post (after President/Vice President), it finally occurred to me that he was looking for a game changer as McCain did with Palin.
We know how successful McCain’s decision was.
Obama has just blown off the 19 million Democratic supporters who voted for him instead of Clinton in the primaries and marginalized the progressives in favor of the Clinton/DLC 18 million Democratic voters who don’t like or trust him.
e also blew off the rest of the 62-plus million who voted for him and not unstable McCain (or Clinton) in the general election.
He will have as much luck with Clinton as McCain has with Palin.
Most of us voters were so sick of the Clinton and Palin dramas; we were relieved when they both lost and we could be at peace again.
It appears we shall never be rid of these people and will be forced to expend endless draining emotional capital on them.
Count me out.

You are all deluded. Obama will not be the next president, and he knows it. He is not a “natural born citizen” because he was a British national at birth, and this will never change no matter what his birth certificate says or doesn’t say.
This not-yet-president-elect (who will never be the president elect), now that he has proven that he can steal an election (using a massive infusion of foreign money) is preparing the country for the Billary administration (to keep things cool until he can figure out a way to steal the White House some other way).
The deals are being made and have been being made behind closed doors. Contrary to all of the nonsensical praises for dishonest, crooked people one hears in these forums, none of these so-called “great” people gives a fart about you and I.
You heard it here.
Don’t pretend you didn’t when this proves true.

Once announced as President Elect Obama’s choice for Secretary of State and before her Senate confirmation it will be time for Hillary Clinton to publically reinvent herself and clearly indicate her readiness and willingness to serve her country as Secretary of State under President Obama; to present her vision and indicate what her approach and her goals will be as head of the State Department. Does anyone seriously believe she lacks that capability? I wouldn’t bet against her.

If you look at our early history as a nation, many of our Secretary of State’s went on to become President of the United States. Hilary will be a great asset to the Obama team. She will make great strides in re-establishing diplomat relations with countries around the world.
Posted by: Raul | November 21, 2008, 5:53 am 5:53 am
The “where’s the change?” trope is way naive. Obama’s obviously learned from the mistakes made by the last two Democratic Presidents.
Both Carter and Clinton had Democratic majorities in the Congress. Carter saw Washington as “tainted” and wanted to maintain his “purity” while the Clintons thought they were smarter than the Congress. They both ignored or battled Congress and ended up paying a big price. Clinton’s first two years were a disastor.
Obama has an ambitious agenda and is picking people who know their way around Washington and know how to get things done. Seems a matter of common sense to me. If you’re running a business, you’re looking for people that can hit the ground running. That’s what Obama’s doing and he’s off to a good start.

Other than political prominence, what makes Hillary such a great and qualified choice for this? What diplomatic credentials and experience does she bring to the job? Is it 5 years on the Armed Services Committee? The fact that her husband was president? It does seem that our standards for high public office vis a vis experience run a bit low. Good private sector management jobs look for 10+ years experience. This choice is so political it frustrates the heck out of me. The Lincoln model is all fine and good but I think it’s a BS justification for this choice.

If he got this money from terrorist organizations, he should be withdrawn as the Pres-elect, remember, he is NOT President until January 20th. He does not deserve to be in that office, if he did this illegally. Most common sense americans want an answer to this. He could be disqualified for the office if he took money from terrorist groups. This should be looked at very closely before he tries to lie his way out of this one too.

If she gets the post, I hope the voice she uses during critical negotiations isn’t the high-pitched screaming she used during her campaign. I felt like my mom was yelling at me for not making my bed every time she opened her mouth. I doubt world leaders would take kindly to that.

As a dedicated Obama Volunteer through the primaries, I am delighted that Senator Clinton will become Secretary of State. Our differences were never as great as the media hyped them up to be. President-Elect Obama’s “All hands on deck” approach is a welcome bit of reassurance in very troubled times.

This is absoulutely the best news I have heard about the transition so far! Obama has made so many great choices, and he hasn’t even been sworn into office, yet! We had a great Country (stable economy, the respect of many foreign leaders) before Bush (under the Clintons) and we will have a great Country again under Obama!
We are at the end of an Error [sic intended]

Let all hope that Hillary Clinton is successful and does a stellar job as SOS on our behalf.
As Senator of New York, her record on improving economic conditions in Upstate New York has been a failure. During her tenure as Senator more New Yorkers left New York state for economic reasons than any other time in recent history.
Let’s hope the next Senator to replace Hillary Clinton will focus on the needs of the people of New York state by working with the Governor in rebuilding prosperity with private sector.

This is so unbelievable. Why didn’t we just vote for her. This is not change, she will eat his lunch. She is so much smarter than he is and it will show over and over again. She has always had her own personal agenda and that is what she will put through. She could care less about Obama. In her book it is said that she “does not get mad, she gets even” well here is her chance. Go get him Hillary. He deserves this. Take it over and run it for him like you did when your husband was president.

The election was weeks ago, and these repubs out here are still waiting for McCain to make a miraculous comeback. The entire republican party is a joke and they can’t stand it. At the office we just laugh at them. They are so sad, they actually believe that Palin is a serious candidate…lol.
Personally I hope she is the candidate in ’12. If she is, the repubs will be even more of a laughing stock than they already are. Put this woman on the ticket and republicans won’t see the White House until Malia and Sasha are running for office.

Given the ditches that Bush/Cheny/Rove have left Obama to dig us out of, your obsession with bogus “issues” like birth certificates and “terrorist” donations are part of the reason that the Republican party has a 61% negative rating. Americans have had enough of this kind of stuff.

Will someone who is a Hillary fan please tell me what she has accomplished since she’s been a senator? Hillary fans keep saying how great she is. I’m a Western New York resident and she hasn’t done anything significant to help our plight. She promised 200,000 new jobs when she first ran for the Senate. When she couldn’t deliver, she said it was because Al Gore didn’t win the presidency. Since she became our senator, many businesses have either closed or re-located to another state. We’ve lost a significant amount of our population due to high taxes and lack of good paying jobs. She has done nothing for us in WNY except save an Air Force base in Niagara Falls, a facility her husband put in jeopardy when he ordered base closings. This carpetbagger did squat, yet you think she’s so wonderful. List her great accomplishments as a senator and please, no exaggerations or excuses.

Now, when I see her supporters for SoS – it’s always the same worn-out mantras and sound-bites. You people don’t even recognize the substance of “Kool-Aid” when you see it. It’s easy for me to see why you all think see’s brilliant.

Gabriel,
I have sympathy for anyone who is represented in the legislature (Federal or State) by someone seeking reelection or running for a new office because their energies are focused almost solely on their campaign. But as we have seen in the extreme cases of Obama and Clinton, they’ve been running for President for the past two years. I feel your pain.
Posted by: moder8 | November 21, 2008, 11:31 am 11:31 am
The SoS is fourth in the line of succession for President of the U.S. Not to mention Hilary would be in a perfect position to run for President in the future after all, compared to Biden she’s a youngster. If she gets the appointment, Clinton fans should rejoice.

PEBO needs to keep the Clintons out of his cabinet and as far away from the White House as possible. The fact that PEBO won the presidency would only be viewed as minor hiccup by the Clinton camp and their power base in Washington in exerting their influence and agenda regarding foreign relations.

Gabriel,
You are absolutely spot-on with your empirical observations of Senator Clinton’s record. She has truly failed the people of WNY and has little to show for as results other than lip service.
Same could be said of former-President Bill Clinton’s record on foreign policy, but today is a new day, WNY will be getting a new Senator, and hopeful a Senator who focused on the economic plight of WNY.
As for Senator Clinton, let us all wish her the best and success if she becomes the SOS.

I question the Hillary choice for SoS. The best choice is sitting right in front of Obama, Bill Richardson. The man has diplomatic experience and is the govorner of a state (New Mexico) that deals with border issues constantly. He’s without a doubt the most qualified man for this job, his problem is his last name isn’t Clinton.

The worst are shallow ideologues.
It’s obvious the little hack falls

Wouldn’t it be “delicious” (Clintonista vernacular)if in the process of being vetted, Bill Clinton was found to be criminally culpable in one of his “enterprises,” prosecuted and jailed. (One could only hope.) And Hillary would be come even more irrelevant. That’s my perspective and I maintain my right to have it.

First of all, I don’t bash Mr Bush. I voted for him twice (yes! I will admit it) and IT IS for the good of the country to support our new president. We are in for some challenging times.
Secondly, unlike that of which you might be, I do not take as fact all what the the media pushes out. I do research issues myself and draw conclusions for myself. That is why I’m utterly baffled by supporters of THIS past Republican ticket. How did anyone with any sense of intelligence support a ticket with Ms. Palin on it? Hey! She might be a nice lady. But, contrary to her own beliefs, she was soooooo unready to step into this position (please don’t give me the “you dont vote for Vice” blah, blah, blah–in THIS event you HAD to consider the aptitude of the VP candidate!) Even the Republican party is now admitting to not vetting her properly etc (Personally, I believe they are now trying to destroy the monster they created!)–and no, I don’t believe the Africa stuff, nor do I think she is at fault regarding the clothing mess.
It was through her own interviews (all of them), her naive positions, that she proved herself to be very inept. All by her lonesome…
Now… given our current state internationally and domestically, PLEASE tell me why you thought Ms. Palin to be qualified? (and don’t do that Governor of Alaska mess…etc.)
I await patiently….

Geez! The absurd partisan poison still flows pretty thick. Look around people. There is an epic mess staring us in the face that could bring our economy crashing down and all of us with it. Our ungodly debt is owned by foreign interests and we are stretched between two expensive war fronts and have exhausted our military’s ability to react to any other threats. Our super power status is in steady decline while China and Russia are rising. The time for partisan B.S. is OVER! You are either PART OF THE SOLUTION or part of the PROBLEM. Make a stand – which are you?
