Hillary, Sturm undt Drang
Sources tell ABC News that on Wednesday night Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, told the Obama Transition Team that she was inclined to reject President-elect Obama’s offer that she be the next Secretary of State. Among other reasons, the autonomy of life in the Senate, where she is her own master, appealed to her.
She was encouraged to refrain from making a final decision.
On Thursday, many people in Obama’s world reached out to Clinton and convinced her to take the job.
By Thursday night, she had conveyed to President-elect Obama that she was interested in the job. In other words, she essentially accepted his offer.
Details are still being worked out, but everything is on track for Clinton’s nomination for the job to be announced after Thanksgiving, along with other members of the Obama national security team.

As much as I fear any re-introduction of Clinton drama into the national stage, and while I was hoping to see Al Gore as SoS, I think this is an inspired pick.
There’s few smarter, more respected voices in international politics, and it shows Obama to be serious about hitting the ground running on Jan. 20.
As for Hillary — this just further cements her place in history. A First Lady turned Senator? That’s impressive. A First Lady turned Senator turned Presidential front-runner turned Secretary of State…. She may get a larger chapter in the text books than Bill…

for the life of me i cannot understand what the big attraction is with the clintons—-nafta and the chinese trade agreements are more than enough for me.
just remember the chinese tradfe agreements and that bwalmart is one of the largest benifactors—–and also remember that she worked for walmart, one of the greatest reasons for the downfall of small business the base of our economy—i would put her on snl and forget about her.

I want any reader to know that this is my very first Hillary-bashing in life, ever.
From what I gather, Hillary kinda likes the “what does Hillary want” suspense. Remember the primary speech? Altho I find that a bit repulsive for a public person (no drama, always go with no drama), if that’s what gets her going, then so be it. And I have a feeling the Obama people know and understand the Clinton need for drama which would probably explain why her pick is the one getting most of the hype. So it seems like they understand each other, which is nearly half the work in working together.
On an unrelated subject: JAKE, when are you going to report on Geithner so that I can comment on it like I just found about it from you?

a bunch of people who won’t be going to work for her at State….all thinking they are more important or that they want to seem more important…than they really are.
Jake c’mon…Bill was offering up his whole portfolio Wednesday…
the “sources” are just the same ones trying to ingratiate themselves to reporters …go look at Mary Steenburgen’s answers to these questions…you can read between the lines that hillary wanted this job…her true friends and advisors wanted her to have this job…and only the lemmings that worked for her campaign said otherwise…
the same ones trying to look important to people like you.

Big mistake for Hillary to accept the SoS job. Obama will ignore her. In the meantime he sidelines both Bill and Hillary.

Question
I bashed Hillary during the primaries but I also called for and ahead to say she would be and should be (if Obama is as smart as I thought he was) SOS.
all this will she or won’t she has been going on while she and Obama have been on the phone every day.
this all was not created by Hillary…it was created by the sad group that is not the group that will be going with her to state…who are angry at the primaries…who want to look more important and more in the know to the press than they are…
because without that figmented creation in there lives…they ain’t got squat coming out of the past 2 years.
so don’t blame Hillary…from what we saw of the answers she has given…and her interaction directly (not her staff around her) with Obama…I think there is a strong amount of respect there…and they will do a fine job as peers…just with his final say on their direction.

I think both Hillary and Barack like one upping each other. This stuff is not created by Hillary Obama sources leaked info first and never even official said they offered her the position as a matter of fact on CNN Obama sources say that it was never officially offered. So then senate wants to get involved and offer Hillary something to stay on. Its not an easy decision people this is probably the rest of her life we are talking about.

Despite what many are saying. These are new faces, in new positions. These are obviously people that fall in line with his politics and philosophy. The cynics are so anxious for him to fail. So far Obama has made wise decisions and it’s quite commical to watch the Fox news bunch try to spin it into something negative.Trying the old politics line. Change dosen’t necessarily mean new.

Nobody…nobody brings what Hillary Clinton will bring into the room when they have to negotiate around the world. Her coming in on behalf of Barack Obama and the US is a force.
and you can’t learn that…and she would have that power on her own…but as SOS for Obama…that is a force.

Anyone who voted for Obama in order to get “change” wasn’t thinking straight. His background clearly showed that he’ll do or say anything to win. He got rid of the competition in previous elections based on questionable legal technicalities; he voted “present” instead of taking a stand, etc. I know you all remember that stuff.
One change I’m hoping for: I hope Obama offers Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick a job (Obama’s close friend and also a “change” candidate). That’s the change we need in Massachusetts before Patrick breaks us all with gambling and redistribution of wealth via taxation and higher Mass Pike tolls.

“Sturm und Drang” is one of those German expressions that have come into common use (there is no “t” in “und”, btw). It refers to the “storm and pressures” involved in coming to a final resolution (teenagers experience this as they mature). Another similar word is “angst”.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton
Once officially announced as President Elect Obama’s choice for Secretary of State and before her Senate confirmation Hillary Clinton will begin to publically reinvent herself. She will clearly demonstrate her readiness and willingness to serve her country as Secretary of State under President Obama and will present her vision and indicate what her approach and her goals will be as head of the State Department. I can only wonder if the new Hillary will sport a new hairdo and wardrobe as well.

Actually if she takes this it is a smart move on both their parts. She can run in 2016 with this on her resume. (she still would be younger than McCain). That could keep the Democrats in power for at least another 8 years beyond Obama’s 8 if she ran and won.
No matter what you think of Hillary she has the intellect and diplomatic skills to handle this job.

Smart move on Obama’s part–this way she can’t run against him in 2012 without quitting the SOS job. If Obama fails to keep his approval rating over the next fours years or makes any major screw ups, Hillary has the ability to effectively use it against him in the primaries in 2012 and spoil his run for re-election. However, sidelining the Clintons may not solve Obama’s re-election run if the Republicans manage to come up with a candidate that steals the show from him. Remember, the GOP is analyzing why they lost this year and will spend the next four years giving Obama as many migraines as they can. Remember Newt in the 90′s and his constant needling of the Clinton Adminsitration?
Posted by: fooled no more | November 21, 2008, 8:18 pm 8:18 pm
Hillary won’t run in 2012 no matter what happens with the Obama administration. Obama will run again and Hillary will run in 2016. I think this is her plan. And she will have more foreign policy experience being SOS than anyone else.

We’ve seen so much of this back and forth over the past week, I won’t believe anything until I hear him offer her the job publically.
Frankly, I’d love to see Hillary stay in the Senate and continue fighting for universal health care – 47 million people are counting on her to take this fight all the way to the finish line.
She’s proven time and again over the years that she’s our champion and that she doesn’t give up easily. If anyone can FINALLY get results, it’s Hillary.

fooled no more
“Remember, the GOP is analyzing why they lost this year and will spend the next four years giving Obama as many migraines as they can. Remember Newt in the 90′s and his constant needling of the Clinton Adminsitration?”
—————-
I’ll bet you never counted on the fact that the GOP to be so stupid as to use Karl Rove’s now well-known swift-boating of Democratic candidates again in 2008. Clearly, they did not learn from their mistakes. How many times do you get to use one strategy, get caught red-handed, and be dumb enough to use it again?
That’s just how out-fo-lunch the GOP is. They are truly as clueless as people think they are. They live in a very insulated world, closing themselves off from the realities of most people. Living in such a small society can mean only one thing — they know only about how they think, respect only what they think, and something think so much of themselves that they think they can sell their wealth, and their limited ideology to the masses.
Well, your comment about the fact that the GOP is mulling over why they lost the election — from what I’ve seen on talk shows, they seem to think to become MORE ENTRENCHED in the ideology that got them kicked out of both houses of Congress and the White House. Does that sound as though they’ll ultimately come to the right conclusion? Whatever they do, they are not plentiful enough to win elections by themselves. Furthermore, this is hardly the climate for smaller government. Even people who once espoused this idea, are now losing their jobs, their healthcare, and their wealth. NOW THEY WANT GOVERNMENTAL INTERVENTION. So, the only way the GOP will win in 20012 is if the Democrats fail in a big way, and even then the populace by vote for the Green or the Independent candidates, since the Democrats and the Republicans have had numerous chances to mess up.
And yes, I remember “Newt and his needling of the Clinton Administration.” But YOU remember, Newt had to leave government because he was stepping out on his wife — the same reason he voted to impeach Clinton. All of the GOP’s stalwart moralists have fallen off their pedestals, and will never be welcome back!

Well I can’t see Hillary being an Obama stooge, or working very well in this submissive role as a diplomat. I thought Obama was going to be lead man in “restoring” America’s image in the world which does not leave much room for a super-Secretary of State… he would do better hiring a real secretary.
Posted by: Turn it Down | November 22, 2008, 5:52 am 5:52 am
This explanation makes the most sense to me, Jake. Thanks.
I honestly don’t think Hillary Clinton planned on getting a spot in the Obama administration.
And I for sure don’t think she imagined STATE, so I think this was a shock to her.
Now that John Kerry apparently wanted it (a no-brainer) and was apparently turned down (a surprise), I think I’ve figured out how Clinton got this job:
After the primaries, Barack had everyone campaigning for him — including Kerry, Richardson, Clinton and Clinton. What better way to figure out who can actually move people to action and to come together for a cause that they are not sure they even support (the very job of Sec of State) than to watch these candidates for his cabinet jobs in action.
I think the Clintons showed their greatest strength AFTER the primaries — their loyalty to the cause of making America a better place for everyone, no matter who was on the team helping.
Who helped Barack Obama win the nomination — Kerry, Richardson or Clinton?
After their endorsements of Obama, she still tied him in votes. They didn’t help.
Obama appeared with Bill Clinton in Florida for a major — and unbelievably eloquent — speech about Hope.
The first person he sent to Florida was Hillary.
Hillary in Nevada.
Hillary in PA.
Hillary in OH.
Bill in New Hampshire, THREE straight appearances, all day long, on the Sunday before the election on Tuesday.
Where were Richardson and Kerry those last days?
Once she was out of the race, she never made a mistake in behalf of Obama or the Democratic ticket.
Kerry did.
(The Depends joke was disgustingly un-diplomatic).
And I have no idea where Richardson disappeared to… Hillary Clinton was the one sent to Texas to try to rally Hispanics (which she did).
I also think Obama just laid out the gauntlet to all of us. (Yes, msm and netroots, ALL of us).
I’m a Clinton supporter who still doesn’t understand the cult appeal of Barack Obama.
Obama’s supporters still don’t understand the cult appeal of the Clintons.
Obama just told both groups to get over the cult worship and get to work repairing the damage that The Worst President Ever and The Worst Vice President Ever did to America.
Let’s try, okay?
It’s change everyone who is not a Loyal Bushie can believe in!
Democrats, Republicans, Independents, fiscal conservatives, defense conservatives, and maybe even a few evangelicals…
Let’s rid ourselves of the stench that Bush-Cheney brought to America, by working together for the Common Good.
Congratulations to the Obama TEAM!
It’s going to be a very bright new year this year for everyone in the entire world except the Bush and Cheney families.
Pop the corks!!!!!!

After leaving office they have stashed millions in offshore Turks and Caicos bank accounts and continue with their shady dealing. The Clintons have alledged ties to Columbian drug cartels dating to their connection with Arkansas Mena Airport drug trafficing and lobbying for the Columbian government. As chairperson for the India Caucus, Hillary was intrumental in outsourcing millions in US jobs to India. This is not change we can depend on.

He had to put her someplace. She wasn’t good enough to be VP.

It’s party time for Bill when Hillary leaves the country so often

I bet S. Palin is seething with envy. Or I hope so anyway!

I hope this works out for Hillary. She is a wonderful strong woman who was caught in the tides of history through no fault of her own. This is a way for her to impact world outcomes much more than she could as a senator.
And I must say about those of you who still, after all these years, repeat your stale old jokes about Bill and interns and cigars: at least Bill only screwed people one at a time, unlike Shrub (as the late great Molly Ivins referred to George W. Bush), who has screwed the whole country in his eight years in office.

The Clintons are capable people without all of the manipulation by media, surragates, and old timers.
I think the Clinton appointment was a bargning chip to get the support that the Obama campaign was convienced it needed to win. To really be “CHANG”, if the Clinton’s chose not to be involved they should have been left alone and the Obama campaign should have taken the risk. I think they would have been suprised.
If the truth was faced, Obama started to move up with women and the working man’s voters before the Clinton drama.
This has the over tones of “calling in favors”.
With the push of the media and the oldtimers there was no trust that the new guy was capable of doing the job.
This is the unspoken evidence of the insidious racism in our country. AND THIS IS NOT THE RACE CARD.
