She was no help. He did this on his own and owes her nothing. Why do you think she has been tucked away these last several months? She is an albatross around his neck.
He needs to distance himself from this “hanger-on”. Give her some nice “token” position and tell her to go far, far away.
Oprah wants to rule the world, does not have the intellect to do so and decided to attach herself to a rising star.
He’s far too classy and intelligent a man to be keeping company with her. Ditch her and ditch her fast – would be any thinking person’s advice to Mr. Obama

Nothing many many people helped this man and you owe them all????No way a big>>>> Thanks and kep movong.

She ABSOLUTELY was a huge help for him. If you think for one moment she didn’t give him millions of $$$ for his campaign, you don’t want to face reality. How do you think Obama was able to have his own TV Station on Dish Network (Channel 73 – 24 hours of Obama…what a joke). If you think he doesn’t owe her anything and that she will have no influence on his presidency…you are mistaken. This country is going to be in trouble…

Posted by: Jenn from PA | November 6, 2008, 9:21 am 9:21 am

In all fairness, he does owe Oprah, without her he wouldn’t be where he is. She introduced him to her audience, she pushed him. If you want to call her a hanger on, then you would have to call him a user. (And I don’t care to much for Oprah)

Posted by: samhiguchi | November 6, 2008, 9:22 am 9:22 am

No doubt Oprah has millions of followers and once she endorsed Obama those followers did as well, he won by a LANDSLIDE and those few million votes would not had changed the outcome. Obama owes Oprah Nothing! I could see Oprah playing the part of his Wife (and Will Smith playing him) in his movie which will surely happen. Hollywood smells money I am sure.

Oprah’s TV ratings and popularity are tanking. People are seeing her for what she really is – a self-promoting hanger-on.
He needs to get as far away from her as he can. She thought she could buy the ear of the President. Prove her wrong Barack. Please !!!

Posted by: Bill Elliott | November 6, 2008, 9:39 am 9:39 am

My question is……..why are you asking this question? It really doesn’t matter your 44th President is an African-American and his name is President Barack Obama. History in the making. So to ask how and why, just know that it is.

Looks like Oprah bought herself a president.

Posted by: Gayle | November 6, 2008, 9:43 am 9:43 am

Forbes Magazine lists Oprah the wealthiest woman in the country… With all that money, following Oprah’s endorsement of BO, she laid out millions of cash to facilitate his election. Who do you think paid for his primtime public address on ALL networks before the election? Who do you think paid for the lavish park celebration in Chicago? Who do you think paid for BO’s own private network? OPRAH! Payback’s a bitch in more ways than one. Look for Oprah to be included in some form or fashion in BO’s administration…

There is no nightline video on that link, its simply 3 commercials.

Posted by: mitch | November 6, 2008, 9:50 am 9:50 am

Oprah endorsed him because she believes in him. She does not need him and is in no way a hanger on.
In addition, Barack doesn’t owe her anything. She did what she did in support of him because she wanted to. It is his job now to lead this country. PERIOD.

Posted by: Obamacan | November 6, 2008, 9:58 am 9:58 am

Oprah thinks that as of Monday, we still had slaves then Tuesday, they were freed. Get a grip.
Of course there has not been slavery for generations and generations in this country. Her fawning over this is rather racist. She wants racism to end, yet she doesn’t act like it. That goes for many in tv as well.
What does Obama owe Oprah? Good question. One must wonder just how many $100 donations Oprah gave: 1000, 10,000 or a 100,000? There really is no record since they were all small donations, just a ton of them.
The better question is what does Obama owe the far leftwing that put him in power. There was displays of the communist flag waiving in the celebrations. What ‘change’ were they promised and told that the rest of us were not?

Posted by: Megan | November 6, 2008, 10:07 am 10:07 am

@ Megan, what exactly does the communist flag look like?

Posted by: Charlie | November 6, 2008, 10:35 am 10:35 am

It is wrong to state that donations do not have to be accounted for. I gave two small donations and had to provide name, address, phone number and answer questions regarding my donation. To think that Oprah would be dumb enough to give huge money and perhaps be an embarrassment to Obama is ludicrous. All donations are tracked but only those over $200 have to be made public.

Posted by: sharon | November 6, 2008, 10:40 am 10:40 am

We don’t know how much obama owes oprah.
but it was the american PEOPLE who put their vote into obama.
and for that
obama owes the AMERICAN PEOPLE ALOT
and i believe he will payback in GOOD

Posted by: one world, one people | November 6, 2008, 10:43 am 10:43 am

I too noticed the communist flags waving in amist the celebration for Obama…this is scary America. I really feel this is the “change” which was the theme of Obama’s campaign. He never really explained the “change” other than say that it will not be a continuation of the last 8 years…no crap! McCain would have provided a change as well….his change would have been positive though and now America is in trouble.

This is just another question asked of barack hussein obama and opra that will never be answered by the MSM. opra didn’t tell me how to vote. I refuse to watch her show, look at her magazine, read her books or anything she is associated with…now you folks will see just who opra is.

Posted by: Lilly | November 6, 2008, 10:48 am 10:48 am

What does it matter? Race, red states, blue states, contributions, etc, etc. We have an intellegent man, he has an intellegent wife. I’m going w/the biggest and the brightest. Congradulation Mr President. I as well others will pray for you.

Posted by: Lillian | November 6, 2008, 10:49 am 10:49 am

Sharon – you are exactly right….that is why Obama’s donations were all small amounts. So he didn’t have to report them! Oprah most definitely could have donated millions of dollars to his campaign and they could have documented it in $100 dollar increments. It would have taken some time but it could have been done. It’s a shame….this election was won not on ideals, experience or proven ability as a leader (all which Obama is lacking) but based on skin color. Oprah, Jesse Jackson, etc. wanted a black man to be president and with the right amount of money in America anything is possible. (Just remember the OJ Trial!)

Posted by: Jenn from PA | November 6, 2008, 10:50 am 10:50 am

Supporting Barack Obama was one thing but the eschewing having Sarah Palin on as a guest, who would undeniably have been a ratings blockbuster, was just too much for my blood. I guess when you have Oprah’s money, acting as a professional in your job becomes secondary to trying exert influence over the lemmings in TV land.
But in the end, Oprah was just one tentacle of the media behemoth that helped get Obama elected. And the nedia was just one part of an eqation that included a 5 to 1 campaign money advantage (which the media would have decried if the candidate’s roles in this respect were reversed) and the perfect timing of a severe economic downturn (which both party’s deserved blame for but which got assigned to just one).
Therefore Oprah was just a fraction of a fraction of what won Obama the Presidency. But if Oprah would like to take the credit — or blame, history will tell — then go on and let her.
As Oprah was quoted as saying, after the election results were in, “Barack is showing he’s a unifier. All that red state-blue state divide in this country is becoming the Color Purple.”
By the way, “The Color Purple” is the name of a musical, now touring the country, which is based on one of Oprah’s books.
To Oprah this all boiled down to a plug for one of her media properties. It’s all so ridiculous, Saturday Night Live couldn’t have even made this up.

Posted by: OBAMANATION [uh-bom-uh-NEY-shuhn] | November 6, 2008, 11:01 am 11:01 am

I admire stars like Carrie Underwood. She lost all her respect to the celebrity like Oprah who uses their popularity to influence the election!
Thanks God, I don’t watch Oprah show, read her magazine, or listen to her what-so-ever!

Posted by: Frodo | November 6, 2008, 11:06 am 11:06 am

Charlie, you ask Megan, what exactly does the communist flag look like?
Here is the answer:
The communist flag look like this: the yellow star in the middle of the red flag. It represents for a one party, one power only!
Just ask Vietnamese, they refer a communist flag as a government who builds its own empire from its people’s blood!

Posted by: Lily | November 6, 2008, 11:26 am 11:26 am

Oprah is the biggest product pusher on the TV. She likes to wield her popularity to promote books of questionable merit.
She purposely wielded her influence for Obama and his agenda. She has helped push on this country the least qualified president elect ever. It’s sad.

Posted by: Oprah Sells | November 6, 2008, 11:36 am 11:36 am

Had it not been for the people who worked tirelessly throughout the primaries and general election, knocking on doors, making calls and donating what they could and then actually going to vote for him, he would not have won.

Posted by: cincyr | November 6, 2008, 11:40 am 11:40 am

It will take sometime for people to deprogram themselves….
There are still people who believe that Obama’s birth certificate was forged.
Quirky smears aside, Obama is going to be neither communist nor islamofascist.
He is our President. The best to come along in a generation.
It’s time to listen to John McCain and let go of the campaign rhetoric.

Posted by: Blip | November 6, 2008, 12:07 pm 12:07 pm

While Obama owes a bit of his success to Oprah, the ‘why’ she chose him to champion is more telling to his winning the election. She had recognized the excellence of the man, his unique combination of talents that make for a great leader. Millions of Americans saw those same abilities as important in their future leader.
I am an occasional ‘Oprah’ viewer as well as a reader of her magazine about 3 times a year. My impression of her is that of a very strong, intelligent, kind woman. So when she gives us her opinion, her fans look into it. She is like a cool, smart, older sister who always has interesting advice and information. I don’t follow her blindly but I trust her enough to check out her pick whether it is a new book or a product. I haven’t been disappointed very often.
I already knew and liked Obama before I found out Oprah was backing him. Her opinion didn’t change mine but maybe confirmed it a bit. Oprah’s praise might have encouraged some fans into checking him out but Obama himself closed the sale.
Another way I haven’t seen mentioned that Oprah may have helped pave the way for Obama was through her television show. There she won over fans of all colors and ages with her personality. Look at her audience and see the range of women who are her fans. Oprah has been a very visible example of a strong, friendly, intelligent black woman who her fans feel very comfortable with. For white women who may live in an area where there isn’t a chance to know any black women Oprah is that woman they get to know. I have watched her show and laughed, cried and learned together with her and the audience. That kind of bonding is the best fix against prejudice I can think of.
Three cheers of Oprah!

Goodbye Oprah – what you did yesterday was way inappropriate to all of us who have supported you over the years. I am sure you don’t care, but we will never watch you again.

Posted by: Jane | November 6, 2008, 12:15 pm 12:15 pm

I’m very skeptical about any conjecture which gives Oprah the power to sway an election and turn global events. Perhaps Oprah’s ego would like to think that along with FOX news. Back in August, FOX did something very similar with geographic statistics from magazines and books, and they projected a million gained votes for Obama. But bottom line, there’s no sense to be gained by predicting the present from speculating, with or without statistics, over past events. And those statistics, none too logically, correlated book sales with voting decisions, leaving out the significance of the electoral vote.
Oprah’s star studded endorsement of Obama done in tandem with Caroline Kennedy failed to win over California and the primaries held a week later. I think the American public needs to be given more credit ; we’re not easily swayed juveniles with little or no discernment who are taken in by media glitz and nonsense.

In the long run celebrities hurt themselves badly in the public’s eye when they get involved in politics.
Which ever side the celebrity picks to promote they will be upsetting half their audience.
Celebrities and politics don’t mix…unless the celebrity takes the brave stand and runs for office; like Ronald Reagan or Arnold Schwarzeneggar.

Posted by: Tom Scranton | November 6, 2008, 12:25 pm 12:25 pm

I don’t think recommending a President is like recommending a book or a sorbet. Trusting someone’s opinion on a book does not mean trusting their opinion on the leader of the country.
I’m sure Oprah’s support had a mostly positive impact, but was it significant enough to be the difference between winning or not? I don’t think the case made in that report is convincing.

Posted by: Aengil | November 6, 2008, 12:36 pm 12:36 pm

Before the election, one of the right wing nut radio talk show hosts claimed to have seen a “communist flag” on the dais behind Senator Obama. Turned out to be the State Flag of Ohio.
Wasn’t aware that there’s a communist flag. Thought the hammer and sickle bit the dust with the break up of the USSR.
Can we move one now?

Posted by: Brooklyn Democrat | November 6, 2008, 12:57 pm 12:57 pm

Why are we talking about Oprah? She made the conscious decision not to endorse him before the elections, and she chose not to have Palin on her show despite pressure to do so … knowing the power that her celebrity wields, she just didn’t want to unduly influence the election, and rightly so. So in my opinion, nothing is owed and nothing should be expected.

Obama is (I think) going to make clear to anyone comming with his/her hand out that he does not owen anyone anything.

Remaining Republicans and the ‘far right’ will do everything they can to inhibit progress in the Obama administration. I would hope that they would at least wait and see what Obama actually tries to do, but, in my heart I know they won’t.
Republicans are reduced to many states that are sparsely populated. Obama & Dems will have to reach out to ‘them’ but I fear no matter what the Dems say…… it will be a hard sell.
After all this time of ‘demonizing’ Obama, Republicans will not change their tune quickly if at all.
If Obama is able to make a dent in the damage left by Bush & Cheney & Republicans, he will still hear the smears and invective of the far right.
Republicans have been good at winning, but, pretty lousy at actually governing.

Dear Wilma
If you’re wondering why your taxes might go up . ..
During 6 years of Republican power over the White House, Congress and the Senate (2001-2006). . . they rang up RECORD government DEFICITS and record government debt.
Five hundred billion dollars of deficit EACH YEAR for four of those years.!
%500,000,000,000 per year – of government OVERSPENDING by the Republicans!
Where did they think the money was going to come from? The moon?
AND the Republicans had the nerve during the campaign to blackball the Democrats as “TAX and SPENDERS”.
No wonder they got booted out of power.

Maybe $500,000,000,000 (FIVE HUNDRED BILLION DOLLARS) of overspending by the Republicans is ‘chump change’ to you.
Most of the rest of the country is smart enough to understand this was GROSS overspending on the part of the Republicans.

I don’t remember how many rallies Oprah attended, but her presence at the South Carolina rally was HUGE in encouraging voters to support Barack-55% (33 delegates) versus Hillary-27% (12 del.) or Edwards-18% (0 del.).

To all of you who believe that President Obama is endorsing communism can take a look at his background. He is a very intelligent man who graduated from Harvard and Columbia University. He also taught at the Chicago Law School. I firmly believe that his views on communism are anything but good. Let me remind you that being liberal is NOT the same as being a communist!
