In Grant Park: Ready to See History Be Made
ABC News’ Barbara Pinto reports: You can sense the excitement the moment you glimpse the evening sky.
And as the results came in from California, Washington and Oregon, pushing Barack Obama beyond the 270 electoral votes needed for victory, the crowd erupted.
Strangers hugged, some waved flags, others held homemade banners that proclaimed, "Yes, we could."
Near one television, a man with a camera around his neck stood staring at the screen, nodding his head in agreement, crying.
A klieg light emerges from the Chicago skyline — a beam originating from the park where the crowds are gathering, and where Obama will speak.
Police have closed off the area for blocks around Grant Park. There is no traffic. The crowds walk in. Three streets away, the flow of people is a trickle. At one block, it thickens as folks walk shoulder to shoulder. At the park, it is a line that snakes around corners and onto the lawn. The crowd is peaceful, expectant.
Latrelle Jenkins, who lives on the South Side of Chicago, Obama’s neighborhood said, "We wanted to see history being made tonight, and we couldn’t imagine watching this from home."
Her 11 year old daughter Kaya, has a similar view.
"It’s so cool," she says. "I can’t wait to tell all my friends I was here."
Along the route, peddlers sell Obama hats, T-shirts, flags.
"Wear it and make history," one man shouts as we walk past.
Inside Grant Park, tens of thousands of people are packed against the barricades.
They are watching the results on a mammoth TV screen. As each state is announced for Obama, the park erupts in cheers.
Sophie Logothetis, an elementary school history teacher, waited nearly an hour to get in. She is draped in a an American flag, beaming.
"I’ve been an Obama supporter from the beginning," she says. "I just had to be here."
She came with a friend who recently decided to vote for Obama.
"We’re going to take this experience back to our eighth graders tomorrow," Logothetis says.
She is one of the estimated 125,000 who had come out so far.
The celebrities have arrived too. Spike Lee made his way into the park a short while ago.
So did Oprah, one of Obama’s longtime supporters, who campaigned with him early on. As she made her way through the security checkpoint and the gaggle of television cameras, she told the crowd she was vibrating with excitement.
ABC News.com was also able to reach William Ayers, a controversial figure from Obama’s past who was also making his way to the park. The former Weather Underground leader, the man Sarah Palin referred to when she said Barack Obama was "palling around with terrorists," said he doesn’t know Obama that well.
When asked if he voted for Barack Obama today, he said, "Of course."

I never thought I would live to experience such a moving election. It has had so many issues which touched close to home and has not just inspired me but touched me deeply. The fact that I supported Obama from the beginning and truly believed that the “truth” will set you free seems to have fulfilled this dream for Mr.Obama and myself.Thank god that we don’t give up on our dreams.

Hi folks! I’m deaf citizen and I voted for Obama. I’m proud that he will be our president in 2009. I was impressed with him when he sent a blind hearing volunteer to Deaf Nation Expo (www.deafnation.com) and explained to us about how Obama supports Disabilities. McCain people didn’t bother to show up. I guess we weren’t good enough for them. GO OBAMA GO!!!

Mr. Obama reminds me of Gandhi who believed in peace instead of violence and brought his country in a new direction once the British were forced to leave. Gandhi is a great leader. One doesn’t win by fighting violence with violence. There must be other alternatives.
I grew up in the ’70′s and remember people caring about one another in Chicago. I believe we need this back instead of the “me, myself & I” mentality we have today.
I’d like to see Mr. McCain and Mr. Obama work together at some point. One may not necessarily agree with another’s opinion but they could find common ground inbetween and join together to help make the U.S.A. better.

OK, take a deep breath and lets return to being civil with each other so we can start to work on the problems that face us all. Now is the time to start coming together to work on getting the USA back to being both United and American, as in the ideals that brought this country into being and ultimately to world prominence.

I have to admit that Jesse Jackson has become almost a caricature of a leader in my eyes and at first I joke about him crying then I realized he was there when MLK Jr. got shot perhaps in front of his eyes and now he gets to witness Obama getting elected.

I had the great opportunity of watching until the 270 mark was surpassed on this chilled evening until late hours of the night.
I was rewarded far more by staying up into the wee hours of the night and witnessing the first speech by a bright individual who will once again reunite our American belief that anything is possible and anything can be accomplished. I believe I just witnessed a speech as symbolic as Kennedy’s….I just witnessed a historical event of inspiration.
Now roll up your sleeves it’s time for all of us to go to work.

Being independent doesn’t mean that I have no opinion. There is no divisiveness in my postings. I am tired of 8 years of one side or the other. I have written many a time on how I look forward to the party that comes from the ashes of the republican party. I have never said that you are either with us or against us.
You are the one who now walks alone. You are the one who wishes ill will to this nation because we don’t look at the future with a jaundiced eye. You are the one who walks away a loser, everyone else celebrates. The celebrate as we have done for over 200 years that this country can change direction. That this country can move in a new direction and everyone of us can still believe that we are the greatest country on earth.
Mr. McCain held his hand out with the offer to help. You sir, damned us. I pity you!

McCain was very gracious in defeat tonight.
He is a good man, who made mistakes in his campaign. His campaign was much better over the last two days.
If he had kept this tone, instead of falling for the Rove tactics and if he had chosen a moderate VP, we could be awaiting recounts right now.
The Republican party of the future will have to become more moderate. If they nominate someone like Palin in four years, they will become insignificant.

Now the real challenge begins. how do you transform a country of energy wasteful, self centered Americans? yes I am one of them. into a resourceful energy saving, turn off the lights behind you kind of citizens. president elect OBAMA has a tough road ahead trying to convince big business cooperate America to give up their gluttinous ways and help re-build our financial institutions and country. or to convince the ordinary Joe that sub-prime loans are not free, but have come at an enormous price to our housing industry and financial institutions. lastly after the divisive campaign, and racially charged overtones of the campaign, how do we convince ourselves that we have way more in common than we do in differences. Most colored voters interviewed on TV said this election was not about race, just before mentioning that they voted for Hussein because it honored Martin Luther King. Now, these are the brains that elected what will inevitably become the one that destroyed the United States of America.

@ Stephen Hancock
We won’t have to leave America. She has officially died tonight.
America, R.I.P.
1776-2008
A token president will not save her. You will see this come to pass. Nobama can’t fix the country. This too shall pass. A once great country is still divided. They will keep this in your face.

At the age of 12 in the 1960′s I watched as Martin Luther King and his followers marched peacefully for their civil rights in Chicago’s south side where they were being hit by bottles and bricks. Yes I do remember seeing the police just standing there Not arresting any of the white crowd who were attacking the black marchers. I remember wondering why? Why weren’t they being arrested. I watched in horror as the news cameras captured people bleeding profusely and dropping to the ground. Yes they did have a permit to march. But the whiteman and police believed at that time that the blackman did not have rights.
Well, here I am witnessing a blackman who is now our president. So to all of you who were throwing those bottles and bricks and to all of you police officers who just stood on the side lines and did not arrest the attackers, how does it feel to witness the first black President of our United States of America.

A RESPONSE TO KRISTI (the deaf commenter) :
You would be happy to know Obama had signers in front of the jumbo screens at Grant Park, so everyone could understand what was going on. :D

I just would like say that that I am very proud of Obama. I know that he will keep his word in helping us out of this bad economy. We were mislead by Bush and others as well and this is why we are where we are at today. Now we have a new biginning and a new life. We don’t have to worry anymore so much. God Bless our Country and our Americans.

TOTALLY WRONG, OBAMA WILL DESTROY OUR ECONOMY

Not that the numbers matter now, but just for the record, the votes that put Obama in office were primarily:
95% of the black ethnocentric population
67% of the Hispanic population (including Mexican immigrants)
60% naive youth
55%, lesbian feminists
And, this is what the news labels the redefining of the new American story. In the words of Tavis Smiley, “I pray that Obama doesn’t sell his soul under the pressure of the Black population to be tribal”. The music and the atmosphere of Obama’s victory party included “There’s no stoppin us now”, and there were stars and planets around his Stalin sized portrait. The words world, planetary, and global have been repetitious throughout the campaign. One headline read “Obama’s army”. The America of Obama is going global. His definition of “one” is not an independent collection of red and blue states, but when he says “out of many we are one” he is including other countries like Kenya (and Muslim Africa ect ect). According to the news we have been introduced to a new kind of politics. The global atmosphere of his whole campaign and Presidential agenda is thematically consistent to the Star Wars type music in the background. The first thing he said in his acceptance speech is that all things are possible. In that statement he is steeling the words of Christ, who said “With me all things are possible”. What is most disturbing was when Obama said we are now putting our hands on the ARC OF HISTORY, and bending it towards a better day. If he is going to quote scripture, then he should realize that Uza who touched the Arc of the Covenant in the Old Testament was instantly struck dead by God. The reason being the Arc is holy, and we are not. Obama, is not the answer to the world. He is not a black messiah. And, anyone who quotes the Bible should read it in its entirety, and understand what they are quoting. It is not Obama, but God Himself who is sovereign over human history. And, it is the word of God that says “I can do all things thru Christ Jesus who strengthens me”. But, the mantra of Obama’s followers is “I can, yes I can” thru Obama. It is deeply disturbing, that the “revisionist history” that is rewriting our constitution is blindsiding the majority of voters, and creating amnesia to what President John Adams considered politically correct. By the way, John Adams did not keep slaves during a time of slavery. So, tell me why is it that the Southern States who knew black slavery are now red, and why didn’t they use their freedom to vote for Obama? Could it be, because these states are in the “Bible belt”? And, why is it that the rights of a Christian minority in today’s America are not considered equal to the rights of the liberal majority? Just some thought provoking questions to consider in light of Obama’s ecumenical agenda for what he calls a new dawn. In the big picture of world history, numbers are not the defining factor of a nation’s survival. Just look at the perseverance of Israel, against all odds humanly speaking. God has, and will continue to preserve her according to His word. And, this same God who has blessed America will remove his protective hand if we partner with purposes contrary to his word. The defining moment of America’s future is not the numbers in this election. It is the humble prayers of those who seek God for the healing of this land. Otherwise, we will shrink and fall like Rome, and Sodom, and Gomorrah under the judgment of God. It is not by Obama, but only by the grace of God, who is the King of Kings that we still stand. HIS-STORY, doesn’t belong to Obama, it is God’s story of redemption. And, Obama is not God, and is not worthy of worship. The sun will go down on those who idolatrously chant “Obama, Obama, Obama”. Real hope does not lie in a temporal economy, or a temporal leader.

I being a 34 year old white AMERICAN was in a black community ( east st. louis) when the news of Obama’s win came in and was met by NOTHING but hatred and violence toward me and I was lucky to make it out of the town in one piece.

Last nite while watching the gathering at Grant Part,I found it disturbing at the complete filth and rubbish that was left covering the grounds of the park. Aren’t Democrats supposed to be “environmentalists”??? I was appalled at the hypocrasy of these people.

I’m happy for the majority of decent African-Americans out there, especially these young kids.
It is about time that we had a minority President, and hopefully in the foreseeable future a female president or VP.
However, Obama is no Dr. King.
And, hopefully, the hate-filled black racists and hate merchants won’t mar what could be a positive aspect of this choice, because I’m not envisioning too many of those.
Same goes for you racist Whiteys out there. You’re an embarrassment.

The job of a “political plumber” is to clean up national messes; will the person the Democrats elected to do this be successful? We shall see in 2012 if “Obama the plumber” did his job…
