Lame-Duck Stimulus? Probably Not
A lame-duck stimulus package isn’t looking likely, according to White House and Congressional sources. Any kind of major stimulus package is unlikely to happen in Congress’ lame-duck session in part because Democrats don’t really want to negotiate with President Bush because they know they’re going to have more numbers coming up in January. One possibility would be a simple extension of unemployment benefits, rather than the extensive stimulus package including infrastructure spending, and aid to state and local governments that Democrats have talked about. –George Stephanopoulos

why do a few big corporations get huge bucks for resorts and the good life while the people who need it most get a lousy few hundred dollars? how come the people get so little respect? is that just the way it is? put the rich on pedestals so they can s h t on the poor folks?

People need to suck up and learn the value of real jobs and hardship.
I have known several people who have not drawn any unemployment because they found jobs that keep the people working and not abuse the system.
Extending these payments just tell the workers that they dont need to work until they find a job that pays as much as they did before.
Before unemployment, people worked because they wanted to eat.

James,
Yea, right James, why extend unemployment benefits in this awesome economy where there are tons of jobs. What a joke people are. I can see you are not hurting to feed your family or pay your mortgage. Im sure if you were you would be singing a different tune. But I guess you figure the I’m Ok, Your Ok attitude works best for you, so screw the rest of us.

James are you crazy. People need the extra unemployment. Just because you have a job does not mean everyone else has one and if you know where the jobs are then please tell all of America where to find them

what a shame that someone thinks we can all build roads and bridges that will take years. I would think an economic stimulus would mean stimulating the economy, meaning ‘spendable’ money. People out of work and those on social security should have had stimulus checks in November and December. Many of the stores could have had a decent holiday season. too.

Maybe what James wants is all these people to work at McDonalds. That’s the conservative way, work work work, and if you don’t make enough money, then find more work. It’s capitalism for the little guy, and socialism for the big guy. And then they cry socialism when the government lends a helping hand to the little guy.

George,
Everybody is talking about the next Economic Stimulus Package. It looks like there will be close a $1 Trillion hand out from the US Government (The People) to Banks and other Businesses.
What about the people who are over 50 years old and have been laid off? Why can’t the US Government offer a tax break to employers who hire people who are 50 years old and older; perhaps on a gradient level, more of a tax break if the person is 51 compared to 50; more of a tax break if the person is 52 compared to 51, etc. These people have already seen their 401K become a 200.5K and they will not be able to retire until they reach the age of 66, 70 or beyond! These people face age discrimination from employment agencies and human resource departments. The US offer tax breaks to employers who hire veterans and offer paid college education to college grads if they work for the peace corps, or teach in an inner city low income city. The people who have been laid off and are 50 years old or older have an extremely difficult time getting hired. These individuals will not job hop. They need to work. Now is the time for the US Government to offer a tax break to the employer as an incentive to hiring these individuals. A $600 or $1,000 payout does not last as long as a long term permanent job. What’s right is right! Do the Right Thing!!!!!

when will the big gov give do it right?because of corps getting money they really dont need the million dollar bonuses get handed out like usual.put an immediate stop on all exec and chair bonuses , regulate the use of the money to go to the right places and there will be more money for more needs.helping those in foreclosure danger is one thing but what about helping putting those who lost everything back on track with a new house and mortgage.oh ya , whatya say about firing all those who illegally, unethically and unmorally got rich from running the game on those who lost.no severance and no unemployment , they got enough to support multiple families for a few years.matter of fact with the disposable cash and property owned they could open a business and employ a few people without anykind of loan money.why should these crooks benefit twice for the same thing.

what we really need,is for Obama to tell the fbi and all other government agencies, to release the”REAL” evidence on 9-11-01. Keep gas prices low, just go and take iraq,or better yet, just leave them to destroy their own country, feed our kids and homless and quit giving other countries billions of dollars for them to rise against us. Open your eye’s people. The more we give them, the more they have to destroy us….. Traeing is fine as far as the stocks are concerned. But i think and believe that we should tell the companies that want to take there businesses over seas to pay less on labor should be banned from the U.S.A.

I love how the Fed always comes out with, “we cut the rates again to help”…to help who??? Banks get the money and sit on it. They don’t lend it cause they know times are tough and some of us had to resort to living off credit cards, huh, no loan there.
Give me the stimulus check and guess where it goes…back to the credit card company that just rose my rates, cause they know times are tough….
The Fed wants to help? How about telling credit card companies that they can only charge 5% maximum…forever.
Make it easier to file for bankruptcy…the loan sharks get a percentage anyway when they “charge off” an account. The 400 a month I pay to see my debt to credit cards unchanged just might be spent on products…which creates jobs…duh.

why is it that when the price of oil was this low it was .999 or less a gallion for gas. now we still have to pay alot more for that so to the big oil companys merry christmas and next time use vasoline. they get richer and we go broke even more. they know we need it to go to work and then we try to do anything special for our family we cannot afford it cuz we dont have the extra income and im tired of working 60 hrs a week and have nothing to show for it.
Posted by: dan | December 24, 2008, 8:39 am 8:39 am
As we pass environmental regulations, the price of converting oil to gas increases.

It is time the govenment looks at the people! Give $100,000 or more to every taxpayer and see how fast the economy booms!
and I agree with Stephen. those older than 50 looking for jobs have it really tough! Give incentives to hire those in that age brackets and raise the unemployment checks to age equivelent status!

James, you should turn down Social Security when you become eligible if you feel so strongly about working; that is, if you aren’t eligible already because it was the ‘working people’ at the time that actually got it in. They also called them Communists at the time. Suppose you think that’s welfare too! By the way, if you do turn it down, SS that is, I’ll give you my address and you can send the monthly check to me. I’ll make sure it’s spent wisely. Also, you should probably volunteer to work on Labor Day. Give somebody else the day off who really appreciates it.

So, the US economy is in the dumper, 1 beacause of war across the ocean and for what? oil? billions of dollars going to a war and we haven’t even got close to Mr. Towel head Osama. Billions of dollars that the Iragi Gov owes the great USA and have we got it back? NOPE. Why? It still sits in their banks! Sure we can’t blame Bush for everything, some yes. Lets put all the crooks from Wall Street behind bars, but first, lets make sure we get all their millions of dollars back that they stole from us hard working stiffs, then stick’m with real killers!
Let’s stop paying for other country’s hard times and lets concentrate on our country! We should come first, then the rest of the world second! Where are all these realestate brokers now? spending the unlucky peoples money who blew it on an adjustable rate mortgage, desperate people do stupid things. Fixed rate is the only way to go. You people knew what you were getting into and now you’ve lost everything. Stupid is, is stupid does. If you like to loose your own money, send it to me, I will be smart and get everything I owe paid off, at least you will know where your money went.
I hope Obama is the savoir for our great nation, god knows we did some one to get our country back in order and stop the BIG EASY SPENDERS AT CAPITAL HILL spending more for less.
God bless this country, we surely will need it and soon!

we will certainly hold your administration accountable for this stimulus program. you better get much more in the way of controlling this package and rule out the pork barrel and ear mark projects or we will be wasting billions of dollars. Some of the proposed expenditures are totally ridiculous. You still need a way to rule out some of these suggested ways to the spend money. the mayors and governors have some really bad ideas on this. It’s going to take time and vigilance to protect us from wasted money. I’m still not convinced there has been any where near the time needed to rule out waste. No time to loose but this package is no where near ready.

I love George! He is so easy to understand when he explains situations that are of the political nature I get alot of clarity. I understand the “bailout” concept, but I am so upset that they paid those individuals big bucks…my question is big bucks for what??? Didn’t the bank fail isn’t that why they got the bailout,,,so it looks like to me the big executives failed at their jobs and now they get fat bonuses for failing. I want that damn job! I am very worried about our economy, what is going to happen to those of us that don’t make any money? I am a new graduate, $20,000 in school loans, and NO Teaching Jobs out there…..my ship is sinking faster than I ever could have imagined. What is gonna to happen to the economy? How long will this happen?

I am just a middle class guy trying to break out of that situation. Not a great place to be. The Politicians and the Media manipulate us on a daily basis. I could go on a Rant for twenty pages, but I will spare you that for now. I have been watching the news for months about the current financial crisis and I still haven’t heard anyone break it down as to what the real problem is. The real scary part is how can they fix a problem when they can’t identify the root of it or even make a simple list of thing that need to be addressed first. The list is very short: Consumer Confidence and do what ever it takes to make the Banks lend money. Until those two things happen, it will only get worse. Maybe they understand this, but they aren’t saying it publicly or loud enough. Oh by the way, they give these banks all this money and they can’t or won’t tell anyone where it went. Solution, give it back and eat the big one like everybody else. No we are just going to through money at it and pray to God that it works. So which window do you want to jump out of?
Here are some of the things I will change when I am in charge:
1.Get ride of the IRS, what a pain they are. This is the fastest way to get money back into the economy. The Solution, (The Fair Tax) City, State, Federal Sales Tax. I understand this is way to simple, but think about it for a minute, it would not matter where the money comes from, if you spend it, you pay a tax. Oh wait, that would eliminate the need for small businesses to pay employees cash to avoid taxes, or hide money in offshore accounts. How about a business would be encouraged to show as much profit as they can so that when they go to the Bank for a loan the books reflect the true financial position of the company. The way it is now a company has to reduce the profits on the books in order to not give it to the government and when they go to the Bank to get a loan, look out there are several different scenarios that could play out, none of them good. Lets go through just a few, Business can lie to the bank, Banker can ignore the books and take care of his buddy, business doesn’t get the loan when in reality they have the ability to service the debt and make their company grow and employ more people, which in turn makes the economy grow. Great system, lets do more of that and see where it gets us. Enough of that, I’m Ranting.
2. The President will no longer have two terms. What you say? The President will only serve one
term of six or eight years (I haven’t decided yet). Now the Big Why. He no longer needs to spend half of his first term getting re-elected for his second term. Now he can do what he was elected to do in the first place and doesn’t have to worry about who he pisses off. Now wouldn’t that save a lot of money and time and also close a door for possible corruption (not that any of that happens).
I’m going to stop now; I don’t want to get into a real rant that I feel coming on. I feel better now.

Really now, Obama works for the Banking money masters and military industrial complex as did Bush and Clinton.
The money master-banking thuggs decide when to cause a crisses and when to make a recovery. Their going to let the economy
recover to the 1998 level, then drop it to the ground with such a thump, that the new world order will take place with a world
bank. Now they own the WORLD!
