LIVE ELECTION NIGHT BLOG

1:37 am ET: Based on exit polls and analysis of the vote so far, ABC News projects McCain will win Alaska.

1:22 am ET: Martin Luther King III, human rights activist: “I think my dad and my mom are looking down on us with great big smiles on their faces… This was a monumental occasion for our nation tonight and perhaps even for the world because the world will look at us differently now… Quite frankly, the challenges will be insurmountable… But often where there are great challenges there are also great opportunities.”

1:20 am ET: People are spontaneously going out into the streets in Washington D.C. and across the country to celebrate Obama’s victory.

12:59 am ET: Per ABC News’ Dana Hughes in Kenya: Kenyans are ecstatic about the election results and the president has even declared a national holiday tomorrow. People are singing and dancing. They really feel Obama is as much their president as that of the United States. There was skepticism all the way until the end that Obama would win, but Kenyans think that not only does this give hope to U.S. but also to Kenya.

12:50 am ET: Hundreds of Obama supporters are streaming down Pennsylvania Avenue. In downtown Washington D.C., people are dancing in the streets, waving flags and honking horns.

12:47 am ET: ABC News projects that Democrats will gain between 22 and 26 seats in the House.

12:17 am ET: "The new dawn of American leadership" was a key phrase. As Sam Donaldson said, Obama’s acceptance speech was reminiscent of Kennedy’s inaugural address in many ways.

12:03 am ET: "It’s been a long time coming," Obama says. "Change has come to America."

Indeed it has — a tremendous night. Whatever your political inclinations, the history here is mind-boggling. Beholding that new first family, President-Elect Barack Obama — I mean, has there ever been a less likely path to the White House?

11:45 pm ET: John K. Wilson, Obama Biographer: "He (Obama) really has created a mandate for this election. People underestimated him many times before and have been proven wrong."

11:43 pm ET: ABC News’ Sunlen Miller reports that Obama’s motorcarde is en route to Grant Park now and he will speak in about 15 minutes.

11:35 pm ET: Based on exit polls and analysis of the vote so far, ABC News projects Obama will win Nevada.

11:31 pm ET: Based on exit polls and analysis of the vote so far, ABC News projects McCain will win Arizona, his home state.

11:23 pm ET: Talk about setting a tone — poetic words from Mark Salter.

McCain: “These are difficult times for our country, and I pledge to him to do all in my power to help him lead us through the many challenges we face.”

“Whatever our differences we are fellow Americans, and please believe me when I say, no association has ever meant more to be than that.”

11:20 pm ET: This is a very gracious move by Sen. McCain — coming out shortly after Obama went over the top.

11:18 pm ET: ABC News’ Jackie Hyland: 55 percent of white voters said they voted for John McCain. 96 percent of black voters who went to the polls today said they voted for Barack Obama. 67 percent of the Hispanic vote went to Barack Obama. 80 percent of voters said candidates’ race was not a factor.

11:18 pm ET: Based on exit polls and analysis of the vote so far, ABC News projects Obama will win Florida.

11:14 pm ET: Based on exit polls and analysis of the vote so far, ABC News projects Obama will win Colorado.

11:08 pm ET: Per ABC News’ Eric Horng: There were 50,000 people in Grant Park waiting for Obama to speak, and more than 30,000 nearby. But that was an hour ago and the numbers have continued to swell since then as everyone waits for Obama to speak.

11:05 pm ET: It’s just now that we feel confident to project Virginia, but based on exit polls and analysis of the vote so far, ABC News projects Obama will win Virginia.

11:02 pm ET: We are looking at an overwhelming majority of electoral votes for Obama, even though we have yet to see results from some states, including Florida. But this is really a historic election and in many ways, not a surprise. In about an hour, we can expect to see Obama address his supporters in Grant Park.

11:01 pm ET: ABC News projects a total of 284 electoral votes for Obama and 145 for McCain.

11:00 pm ET: Based on the exit polls and analysis of the vote so far, ABC News projects Obama will win California, Oregon, Washington and Hawaii. ABC News projects he will be the 44th president of the United States.

10:47 pm ET: Rep. Tom Cole (R-Ok) said that he sees a strong Republican party after the elections. “We’ll have a little bit of soul-searching and reflection… You ought to when you lose, but I think it’s not a cause to lose… I think it’s time to hold our opponents accountable for how they govern. If they reach the middle and work with us, that will be to their advantage.. We will see a much stronger Republican showing in 2010 than we did in 2004 and 2008.”

10:40 pm ET: Based on the exit polls and analysis of the vote so far, ABC News projects McCain will win South Dakota. That brings the total to 207 electoral votes for Obama and 141 for McCain.

10:35 pm ET: David Drucker, staff writer, Roll Call: “When economy is that big of an issue, the incumbent party usually loses the White House… I don’t think we can overstate the extent to which the Republican brand has been damaged by George Bush according to how voters look at it. Barack Obama has run a masterful campaign, but it’s not as though he came in a picture as ‘the guy that blows everyone away.’ Barack Obama exploited that damage.”

10:32 pm ET: This is the Bush legacy — ABC News polls show that nationwide, 40 percent of people identify with the Democratic party and 32 percent with Republicans.

10:26 pm ET: Based on the exit polls and analysis of the vote so far, ABC News projects McCain will win Nebraska. That brings the total projected electoral votes to 207 for Obama and 138 for McCain.

10:18 pm ET: Floyd Abrams, Constitutional Law Attorney, on what would Obama do about judges if he were to become president: “He knows this stuff. I think that he will likely — if one can guess — not just pick judges, I think he might pick a professor or a practicing lawyer, which we could use on the court. I think from a more liberal perspective, election of Senator Obama would more save the court then change it.”

10:08 pm ET: ABC News’ Jackie Hyland: In Arizona, 57 percent of voters had an unfavorable view of John McCain. The Hispanic vote was up 4 points from 2004 to 16 percent. In New Mexico, 40 percent of voters were Hispanic. Obama lost the Hispanic vote in the primary but he didn’t have problem winning it today in New Mexico.

10:06 pm ET: ABC News is projecting that Democrats will retain control of the House of Representatives and gain seats.

10:00 pm ET: In Iowa, ABC News projects Obama will win. This is a state President Bush carried in 2004 and McCain had to hold on to have a real shot. In Utah, ABC News projects McCain will win. The new total of projected votes in the electoral college: 207 for Obama, 135 for McCain.

9:57 pm ET: Things are very much in Sen. Obama’s favor right now. Big states like Ohio and Pennsylvania are falling to him and he is starting to build a commanding lead. Sen. McCain will have to pull off a serious upset to have a shot at this. So far, 200 electoral votes for Obama and 130 for McCain.

9:50 pm ET: Based on the exit polls and analysis of the vote so far, ABC News projects McCain will win Mississippi. Not a surprise there.

9:47 pm ET: Tom Moe, former Vietnam POW with McCain: “The whole mood has been one of we can win this. Any other candidate wouldn’t have even been in this race by this time. It’s because of McCain that we remain optimistic. We will remain loyal to him just as he has been to this country.”

9:41 pm ET: Based on the exit polls and analysis of the vote so far, ABC News projects McCain has won Texas.

9:40 pm ET: Per ABC News’ Jackie Hyland: 61 percent of voters in Ohio said economy was the most important issue. 56 percent said they are very worried about the economy. 71 percent of voters said they disapprove of President Bush’s job over the last four years. 56 percent said they decided to vote before October. It seems like they made up their mind quite some time ago.

9:38 pm ET: Faye Wattleton, president, Center for the Advancement of Women: The numbers prove that we can be comfortable with someone other than a white man for president. Obama’s ability to speak across many platforms and to young voters has made a huge difference.

9:37 pm ET: With New Mexico also falling to Obama, it’s getting nearly impossible for Team McCain to pull off.

9:31 pm ET: Based on our projections, Obama has 195 electoral votes so far and McCain has 90.

9:30 pm ET: Based on the exit poll and our analysis of the vote in so far, ABC News projects that in the Presidential race, McCain will win West Virginia and Louisiana.

9:26 pm ET: Ohio is as big a win as it can get for Obama and puts him in a strong position. It means not just a victory, but it means a very big victory. So far, Obama has 195 electoral votes and McCain has McCain. This is a symbolic victory because no Republican has been elected to the White House without winning Ohio, where economy was a very significant factor. This is also a state where Obama lost to Sen. Hillary Clinton.

9:23 pm ET: ABC News projects Ohio will go to Obama and all four electoral votes in Maine.

9:22 pm ET: Celinda Lake, democratic political strategist: “Obama is the first president of a new generation, he’s not a baby boomer president. He ran the first modern campaign of the twenty-first century and he has a world vision which is very very strong. Generation Y is deeply in debt and without jobs, and his economic message has had a lot of appeal to that cohort.”

9:15 pm ET: We are projecting that Republican Mitch McConnell will defeat Democrat Bruce Lunsford in Kentucky.

9:09 pm ET: ABC News’ Jackie Hyland: 79 percent of voters said that things in the U.S. are headed in the wrong track. 52 percent say they are worse off than they were in 2004. 63 percent said they disapprove of the war in Iraq. 72 percent disapprove of the way President Bush has done his job. The high disapproval numbers could be one of the reasons why we haven’t seen President Bush at all in the heat of this humid campaign.

9:08 pm ET: So far, 55 seats for Democrats in the Senate and 34 for Republicans.

9:07 pm ET: Our projections show that Obama has a total of 174 electoral votes and McCain has 61 electoral votes. A total of 270 is needed to win presidency.

9:03 pm ET: Per ABC News’ Vinnie Malhotra, Oprah Winfrey has just arrived at the Grant Park location. As she passed through security (surrounded by multiple cameras) she was overheard saying, "I am vibrating."

9:00 pm ET: Based on exit polls, we project that Obama will win New York as expected, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Rhode Island and McCain will win Georgia, Kansas, North Dakota and Wyoming.

8:58 pm ET: Wow — in Massachusetts, people voted by a 2-1 margin for higher taxes — against a repeal of the income tax. Remarkable.

8:38 pm ET: Lynette Clemetson, managing editor of theroot.com: “The overall story is the turnout overall, and so while you have a portion of the black electorate that has been extremely energized I don’t know yet whether it will turn up overall numbers… I think we are going to see, with all segments of voters, that the economy trumped race in a lot of ways tonight… This will be a race that makes us challenge a lot of assumptions we have about race.”

8:35 pm ET: ABC News’ Jackie Hyland: 53 percent of white women voted for Obama in Pennsylvania. The time and money Obama’s campaign spent in Pennsylvania seems to be paying off for them.

8:31 pm ET: Another big victory for the Democrats — In the state of North Carolina, little-known Democrat Kay Hagan has defeated Senator Elizabeth Dole, wife of former Senate minority leader Bob Dole. Elizabeth Dole ran an ad that implied her opponent did not believe in God, which Sam Donaldson believes acted against her. Dole did not think she had a serious race on her hand until very late. One key factor that helped Hagan is the battered North Carolina economy.

8:29 pm ET: ABC News projects McCain will win Arkansas and Alabama. That brings the total to 49 electoral votes for McCain and 102 electoral votes for Obama.

8:25 pm ET: Some more projections — Democratic governor candidate Jay Nixon will beat the Republicans in Missouri. In New Hampshire, the very popular Democratic governor John Lynch will win reelections. In Delaware, the projected winner is Democrat Jack Markell, which is critical because he will have a lot of say on who fills Joe Biden’s Senate seat.

8:22 pm ET: Per ABC News’ Dan Harris, the McCain campaign disputes ABC’s projection in Pennsylvania.

8:12 pm ET: ABC News’ Jackie Hyland Reports: In Pennsylvania, 83 percent of voters said race was not an important factor.

8:10 pm ET: Crystia Freeland makes an interesting point — Had the country not experienced an economic downturn, would we have seen these numbers, especially in Pennsylvania, tip in Obama’s favor?

8:05 pm ET: Based on the exit polls, we project that Obama will win Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. McCain will win Oklahoma and Tennessee.

8:00 pm ET: A huge projection at 8 pm — Pennsylvania goes for Obama. You just heard a big deflation in McCain’s world — this takes so many paths to 270 off the table for him…

7:51 pm ET: In Virginia, there are almost 500,000 new registered voters and that’s remarkable. It’s astounding to see a 10 percent jump in the number of registrants. As Lynn Sanders, associate professor at University of Virginia, said, she remembers a time when in Virginia, people could hardly notice a presidential election was going on. "It’s the new dominion now." According to Chrystia Freeland, U.S. Managing Editor at the Financial Times: "Virginia has shifted from being a southern state to Mid-Atlantic state, and that’s really significant."

7:33 pm ET: Based on preliminary exit poll results, ABC News projects that incumbent Governor Joe Manchin will win in West Virginia, and Democrat Jay Rockefeller will take West Virginia Senate seat.

7:30 pm ET: The polls have closed in West Virginia, Ohio and North Carolina — the last two being very important states — but we do not have enough information yet to make projections for those states.

7:18 pm ET: In Indiana, ABC News can project that Republican Governor Mitch Daniels will win the re-election.

7:14 pm ET: I’m struck by some dogs that haven’t barked — the national exit polls have the portion of the black vote up just two points, from 11 in 2004 to 13 in 2008. Similar numbers among younger voters. They turned out — but not in overwhelming, ground-shifting numbers.

7:11 pm ET: ABC News projects Democrat Mark Warner will win Virginia Senate seat.

7:05 pm ET: Based on preliminary exit polls, 75 percent of the people who went to polls today were white, down from 77 percent in 2004. 13 percent of those who voted were black, up from 11 percent in 2004. About 17 percent of those who voted today were between the ages of 18 and 29. The results also show that 11 percent of those who voted were first-time voters, and those numbers did not change significantly.

7:00 pm ET: The polls have closed in six states. Based on exit polls, ABC News projects that Sen. John McCain will win in Kentucky (eight electoral votes) and Sen. Barack Obama will win in Vermont (three electoral votes). We do not have enough information to project in Georgia, Indiana and South Carolina.

6:43 pm ET: What does voter outreach mean? Well — a few nuggets from the preliminary exit polls in Virginia tell that story.

Courtesy of ABC polling director Gary Langer: According to the preliminary exits, 51 percent of voters say they were personally contacted by an Obama campaign worker; 37 percent were contacted by the McCain campaign.

This is the kind of number that looked much different four years ago, when all the commentary was about the Republicans’ “72-hour” voter contact/get-out-the-vote program.

And the top issue? 59 percent say the economy. Iraq is a distant No. 12, at 12 percent, followed by energy policy (10 percent), terrorism (9 percent), and health care (7 percent).

6:05 pm ET: Rick Klein here from ABC’s The Note — we start live on ABC NewsNOW (me and Sam Donaldson) starting at 7 pm ET.

Click HERE to watch our livestream — and be part of the conversation all night on this blog.

A quick note on what I’m watching for early tonight: Much of the story of the election might be told in just two states, both of which close their polls early.

If Virginia (polls close 7 pm ET) goes Obama, look for a big Obama night. That’s a key test of whether demographics is destiny, and of whether black voters and young voters come out in the sort of numbers the Obama campaign expects. If he wins there, he takes away McCain’s very limited wiggle room.

But if Pennsylvania (polls close 8 pm ET) goes McCain, McCain has options tonight. This is a big electoral pick-up (21 votes) that can balance out losses elsewhere. If Obama takes the Keystone State early, he’s locked in the Kerry states in all likelihood — then he can depend on pickups out west to put him over 270.

What are you looking for tonight?

I have a strong feeling about this one — Obama wins it big.

I’m looking for a decisive Obama win. Let’s make history.

Posted by: Jon | November 4, 2008, 6:41 pm 6:41 pm

Whoever wins two of the three ….PA, OH, FL….wins the election, seems simple enough to me. I think that Obama’s endorsement by Castro and willingness to meet with him and Chavez should pull the Cubans to Mcain; Obama’s friendship with Khalidi should pull the Jews to mcCain, and Obama’s bankrupting the coal industry shoudl pull PA and Ohio McCain’s way.
I am so honored to be a part of history.
McCain/Palin

I hope that the information provided by the media is accurate and up to date. I hope there is not a chad hanging anywhere. I hope that voting goes smoothly and that “glitches” are minimized, that everyone who has a right to vote and wants to vote gets to vote, and that the person who gets the most votes wins. (and personally I’m hoping that person is Obama) And mostly I’m hoping that after the election we live up to our name UNITED States of America. None of the problems (economy, environment, education, the war, etc.) that we face can ever be overcome if we have to spend most of our time marching up and down partisan lines. They will not be solved by one person. It will take people on all sides working together to solve the problems. People need to stop thinking political parties and start thinking possible solutions. It will be time to put the anger, the negativity, the put downs away and come together to work together. It is a time for new beginnings.

I want to know why everyone keeps calling Obama an African American? A child born to a ‘white’ mother is considered ‘white’ at birth.

Today was my 3rd time voting in the Presidental Elections! Nevous everytime! I’m hoping and praying that for the 3rd time voting that who i voted for will win!(Obama!:)) But good luck to both parties!

I ran into a problem concerning voting laws in the state of MD,when I went to vote today. I have always registered as unafilliated. In MD (I moved here from MASS only 4 years ago) you have to declare your party affiliation to be able to vote in a primary, so I declared as Republican in a primary thinking I would revert back to unaffiliated. Not so. Today I found out otherwise. So I didn’t know enough about the state election laws here. But the election officials tried to push me into signing 2 documents that, if I had signed them would have made my vote illegal and cause my vote to be thrown out. This situation was not handled correctly. It did end on a satisfactory note and I was allowed to cast my ballot only because I refused to sign the documents they were pushing me to sign. That was not right.

From one of the Battleground states (NC)I am sitting here watching Charlie and George decide our future for us and I’m appalled. Basically they have told us that 6 states will decide this election for us. Funny thing, I thought there were 50 states in the union.
(And yes, I do understand what they are saying.)
Does my vote count more than someone’s in Hawaii or Washington? It shouldn’t. But apparently it does.
God bless America-We need it.

My husband, my daughter and myself walked to the polls today with our 2 year old grandson. No lines in a small town like ours here in Pennsylvania. I taught him how to say “President Obama” because I am confident he will be our next President.

I just wanted to say that it has been a pleasure debating with all of you on here. We agreed and disagreed many times and I hope to do it again in another 4 years.
No matter who wins (even though I am hoping for Barack/Joe). I just pray that America will be a better place for it.

People need to remember that McCain’s organization gave $400,000.00 tO Rashid Khalidi. The Jewish people need to think about that and the fact that the only time the GOP cares anything about the Jewish people or the middle class for that matter, is when they need their votes. And who cares what Fidel Castro or Chavez think about anything in our country.
And again another lie from the McCain camp as Obama is on record saying he is IN FAVOR of Clean Coal Technology. Funny how the McCain supporters seem to just make up stuff as though the rest of us are not intelligent enough to check these things out. Stop insulting my intellligence. After all the jobs lost in Ohio and Pennsylvania during the GOP’s eight years in office, if they vote republican then I can’t feel sorry for them and they loose whatever jobs still remain those states. Afterall, John McCain supports tax breaks for businesses that ship jobs overseas.
I also heard a radio add to day by “Joe the Plumber” about the “redisbribution of wealth”. Funny, Joe the Plumber doesn’t seem to mind when my earnings, on which I pay taxes, make up for the taxes he didn’t didn’t bother to pay. I think he is a hypocrite since he has access to all the roads, schools, hospitals, etc. that tax money pays for yet he doesn’t feel the need to pay his fair share. So the redistribution of MY wealth(which is what taxes are) is payng for what he is not paying . Pay up Joe and then you can bad mouth someone else’s ideas. Or are you saying that your finances under the GOP were so bad that you couldn’t afford to pay your taxes?

What I want to know is when are Maritn L King’s and John F Kennedy’s dream going to become a reality? When will the color of one’s skin become non-existent? You either have a good heart or a bad one.I don’t care what color your skin is. Stop the perpetuism of racism now. Both “white” and “black” people. I nor my children were born in 1865, the year of the 13th ammendment, We were born in 1962,1986 and1 1988. How in the world does that make us responsible for slavery ? Simply by the color or our skin? Reverse racism at it’s best. Stop the ignorance or pass it on. Your choice.

I just want to say regardless of who you vote for, please consider this….a tax cut that leaves us $150 or $1,000 will not be sufficient to make a person or family have a major difference in purchasing power.
However, if a business gets tax cuts, they have the power to hire more workers and pay state taxes; raise salaries and strengthen the economy.

Hello to all voters, including those sitting at the “Starship Enterprise” desks right now. :)
I’m in Chapel Hill, NC and teach preschoolers. In conversation today with my 4+5 year old students, just about everyone in my class mentioned their family had voted for Obama today. That’s about 8 out of 10 that attended class. (We also voted on our favorite fruit. Oranges won over grapes and apples… Coincidence in shape and beginning letter sound? Hm..)

You asked about my voting experience. Thinking I would take advantage of the early voting process, I ended up being informed where I first registered to vote I could not at the VA Hospital in Dallas, Texas. Having documents showing I was entitled, I was told I had to go to another county called Tarrant. I then went to an elementary school was informed I had to go to Ft. Worth, Texas and cast my vote. That did not bother me at all as long as I made my vote count. What had me on wits ends was this is the most significant Presidency in my history and the history of America herself. As I reflect back on my travels on Election Day, as I searched to buy an Obama doll and McCain doll; I was only able to find a John McCain being sold at a Walgreens store in a black populated neighborhood. Now here is the funny thing about this situation, I could not find an Obama doll in the suburbs of the area where I reside in Texas what so ever; but I was informed that was the ONLY place where they were being sold. As I went to various Walgreens stores majority of their employees did not know the company were selling these dolls and thought I was playing a joke o them. As the time come near I believe I have the right to say as Sam Cook: ROME (Wasn’t Built In A Day), but you would think if one of/or a few of your store were selling these two great men which shared this moment in history; you would have enough dolls for distribution. The only thing I have to say is, it saddens me to know that everything people before me left England for you still perceive it to good for America in the same manner we left to gain equal rights. I just ask God to open our eyes and make us understand there is no White privilege for America; there are no Black privileges’ for America as well as well as other ethnic groups. Whoever becomes President, please become the leader we expect and govern this nation accordingly that we all grow. Who ever wins welcome to Office Mr. President, but I welcome Senator Obama

As a citizen and a teacher of government, I depend on ABC news to provide critical analysis which it does very well. I respect and admire George Stephanopoulos and Charlie Gibson and miss Peter Jennings very much.
However, would someone please pass on to the ABC producers that the blue/red percentages flashing in a nanosecond at the bottom of their screen is too distracting? I had to change channels so that I could read the graphics!

I did not vote because I feel like niether candidate cares about the younger generation. They care about the retired and the people who make 100K a year. If you want to have a future in voting then these people running need to start caring about the poeple comming up.(21-35) College students the people who are really trying to make it not the ones who don’t have to live pay check to pay check.

My son voted in his first grade class today. I asked him who he voted for, and in his words: “I voted for Irock Yomamma” Politics, especially tonight, is serious, but sometimes it just makes you smile.
*I voted during early voting here in Raleigh NC, and agree with above comments in the wish that everything goes smoothly and we have a decisive winner tonight.

I cannot morally stand to support Obama in his plan to make the “rich” support the “poor”. I am in the middle class, and I do not want to take hard earned money from those that have worked for it themselves.

Obama will cut out on Military spending a lot of our service members will be job less and a lot of Civilian contractors and Construction workers will be out of a job… that is not creating jobs! Obama has no experience in the Military and considering the fact that he refuses to produce a REAL Birth certificate kinda says something, he’s not a natural born citizen why would any one want some one who doesn’t have experience with the Military and who Supports abortion and says “change” “I will create more jobs” but instead is taking jobs and won’t change anything other than lots of jobs gone… why would you want some one like that as your president?

I could not wait to turn 18 to have the right to vote and have voted in every election. We all make choices in our lives on income and environment and I am blessed to drive less than 5 miles to down a rural road, with crisp blue skies, and hills with newly scattered snow and walked into my polling place at Butteville Elementary School in Edgewood, CA (population of 100) around 7:45am and be on the road driving to work by 7:50am. And yes everyone knows me by name. I enjoy going to the polls rather than absentee voting. Its a tradition for me. It is unbelievable for these other voters to wait in line some voters for five hours!!No parking places, poor access and time frame. How many people can miss a half a day of work to vote. This is extreme poor planning and a deterrent to all voters.

Where are these “exit polls” taken at? I’ve never seen them… why don’t they ever come to the small rural towns?
Why can’t we ever give an exit poll on the internet, since they are saying the internet has a lot to do with this election.
One last thought… I’ve heard, since I started voting (20 years ago), that California voters complain about a winner being projected BEFORE their polls close… Why can’t something be done about this????
These are basically just all thoughts of “thinking out loud”.

Tonight, ladies and gentlemen is sure to be a very historic night. I am a Twenty year old woman in college and voted for my first time in a presidential election. This was my chance to have an opinion in my future both long term and short term. For my age group is the group of the voting population that will carry the burdens of the next president descions. Presently the burden of a failing economy (wich effect my 401k as well as older America’s), a terrible war that drains this country of financial resources and moral, and lets not forget the wallstreet bail out. Yes i voted. I voted for Obama, I voted for hope and for change.

Posted by: Katherine Hayleigh Hawkins | November 4, 2008, 7:51 pm 7:51 pm

I am looking forward to change in this Country and am praying for Obama to take this Election. I am so sick of the Republicans driving this country into the ground, and only thinking about the cushion of their own pockets. I am a Caucasian woman who has lived for many years without Medical Insurance, living in a very underpaid town in the state of North Carolina, not knowing if my Social Security, I worked years for will even be there for me when it is time for me to retire.
This Country has got to come to it’s senses, and get back on track. For the better of our Country first, our Military, Energy, Health Care and Women.
I am to the point if this country cannot get a Grip on Reality and realize that our Economy is going to hell, then i will vote to move out of this Country, I have so loved for my 49 years of being born and raised here.
I feel sometimes I would rather live on a Deserted Island, than to continue living in a Country I cannot Stand Proud of.

if I heard correctly at the Debate between Obama and McCain, McCain made a light statement in sort of a whisper mode that he would cut the Defense Budget. I replayed it over and over to make sure I heard what I heard. I support our Military 100%, seeing I work around them on a day to day basis, and it is the damn Republicans who got us in the situation in Iraq and Afghan in the first place. I have lost many friends, (young kids) fighting in Iraq and Afghan all at the expense of Republicans.

then you would know that Obama will cut back on our military! My husband may be with out a job and so will thoudands of civilians who are payed from the govt. to work with the military like construction workers and so on, you could even be out of a job because of Obama

Posted by: Navy Nell | November 4, 2008, 8:02 pm 8:02 pm

I suggest you go back and watch all of the Debates and listen closely to McCain, so close that you will not let a word slip by you. He is such a big hit for our military, why they state that it is because he was a POW. Well, the way I see it is, if we have POW’s during these War’s, do you think they are really going to think twice about you, or any other Soldier? I think not. they definitely have not given crap about Troops. How long did it take for them finally agree to bring in New Armor into the War. Look at the pay the Military receives, and they have to go on Food Stamps in order to Support their Families. Does this show how much the Republicans CARE? NO!

Posted by: Judy | November 4, 2008, 8:09 pm 8:09 pm

FYI those who are on food stamps are those who spend more than they get paid… thats why! AND ALSO FYI my husband is only an E4 and he still makes enough for us to have a car payment a house payment food clothes… and we dont have to go on food stamps… that is just a poor excuse…

I am voting for Obama for more reasons than one and although sad to say, this is my first time voting b/c I can finally feel comfortable voting for someone who I really feel like cares about people like me..in the poor working middle class and I pray that Obama fulfills many of his promises. On another note, I also believe Kay Hagan cares about people like me in NC and it’s another sad case that I know her better than lady Dole, just from her story online and thru their ads. He has got some really big shoes to fill, and he has really got to live up to his expectations during the years he resides in office.
You a man of the cloth, should not be Judging. I believe God has instilled into my Heart to bring this man into our Lives that he will bring a positive effect to Our Country. For you, for me, for our Nation.

What is the deal with “exit polling”? What makes every network believe that people are telling the truth? Where are these exit pollers and why haven’t they ever been to my town or my district? Can ANYONE say they’ve been interviewed by an “exit poller”? Someone PLEASE give me some answers, it pisses me off that they are calling state races with 0% of the precincts reporting….

I am wondering if anyone has any information to prove or disprove this rumor. In addition, if this is in fact true, will it be taken into account? For the state of Virginia who is now 50/50 and largely based in our military services, those votes are important and need to be accounted for! Please respond! Thank you.

I am an Evangelical Christian. After studying my Bible for years; after much soul searching and looking at the facts from a variety of angles and asking myself WWJD?, I voted for Barack Obama. I voted for the man whose actions most closely resemble a Christian. A man who wants to help all people but mostly those that need help. Not just the rich as we’ve had for the last 8 years and would have again if McPalin got into office. Obama’s plan will tax those making over $250,000/year – I can live with that!
God Bless America!

I think that TV & internet sources shouldn’t call a state until 50% of the actual votes have been counted. Early reporting discourages people from getting out and voting closer to the polls closing. LET MAKE SURE TO GET IT RIGHT AND ALLOW THE PROCESS TO PROCEED ALONG IT’S NATURAL FLOW.

The way it looks Obama will win, I voted for McCain, but will America and the news stop calling him an Africian American. He is an American of African Descent. If he had been born in Africa and became an American citizen, then he would be an Africian American. Why does this country continue to use race. Everywhere else you are recognized by the country you live and raised, not by where your family came from. He is an American and won as an American! He is an American, no matter what the color of his skin.

We had an individual in our area named Shirley Nagle. She withheld Halloween candy from children who had parents who were supporting Barack Obama.
As the children crossed the street, they approached another house that had McCain/Palin signs. The children were crying, and asking “are you going to be that way too?”
The lady responded “sometimes adults are just stupid.”
Mrs Nagle, keep your candy-this tastes sweeter. Your party needed to learn that HOW you win needed to be as important as the winning.
BOTH PARTIES need to learn that it should be about spending your time figuring out what is best, then putting it in place. WHATEVER IT IS, WHETHER ITS YOURS OR NOT. YOU COULD KEEP THE JOB FOREVER.

I’m curious how anyone can “call” a state for one candidate or another when the votes ate 51% to 49% (either way) and only 15% of the precincts have reported? Isn’t this what caused all the problems in 2000 when everyone thought Gore won until the votes were actually counted?

I find it very interesting that they are being so careful about calling the winner of Florida. I live in Broward County, Florida and was happy to find that when I voted this morning, I was given a paper ballot and had to fill in the ovals with a black pen & then slide my ballot through a scanner. I trust that much more than tapping a computer screen. I work with computers all day, I know how fickle they are.

I am sitting watching the election coverage and see that Obama has a large lead that looks insurmountable. I am afraid for Americans. It looks like Obama is going to win and I can’t see why. How can anyone vote for a person who is so openly for abortion. Who wants a person with those kind of morals as the most powerful man in the world. I can’t imagine anyone being for the killing of babies, especially in late-term situations. What kind of person could be for such actions. And he wants the government to pay for these abortions. This sends the message to women that they can go out and act irresponsibly and the government will pay for the killing of an unwanted baby. The government already does enough for these people who have no personal responsibility. The economy, war, and healthcare are all very important issues, but I can’t see how Americans would want a person with morals like Obama’s running the country

Its not surprising Obama is going to win this election, everyone understand that what matters most are the topics he touched on. We need change, experience this time around did not count. If anything it hurt McCain.

I am pleased that Obama seems to be doing so well. I originally did not support Obama as he seemed fake. Hedid show thinks that brought me to his side and with Mcain we knew exactly what to expect and I could not support that.
I didn’t have any trouble voting except no one seemed to know which precint i belonged in since I had not received my new voter registration card after I moved. I was in the same county just a different city. They explained to me that it did not matter which precint I voted in as the county was the same, but there were some special propositions on the ballot in the city I moved from. To me it made no difference as long as my vote would be counted. I called he voters registar offices and was told that all I needed was my stateissued Driving liscense. At the poling place they refused to use that and insisted on using the old voters registration card. Finally someone figured out which precint and I was able to vote in the new precinct.

As an intellectual, Mr. Obama brought me to the poll this morning. I waited in line for 2 hours. It was a poignant moment for me, which i will never forget.
I voted for Obama because he understands the middle class better, and his health care and economic plans are going to benefit me more than his rival’s. Mr. Obama does a great job explaining his policies. He proves to be the king of cool and charm. He is always very composed and shows no sign of arrogance and dismissiveness, which is McCain’s downfall. I am such a believer in the magic of Obama, and he’s become someone i look up to in terms of leadership and keeping a cool head.
I pray that God continues to give him wisdom and a visionary outlook.
I cannot wait for th results

Watch them Republicans are not carrying guns in Chicago at Obama’s Rally. it would be such a shame. I noticed when they were letting people in they were not checked for weapons.

I’m still holding out for McCain. In fact, I have no choice but to “hope” (a term Obama knows so well) and pray for McCain.
You know it’s ironic that all of these black people are voting for Obama, the democrat, because the democratic party once was the party in favor of slavery–the republicans were against it.
It’s not so ironic, however, that the large majority of Obama supporters are black…it’s just sad and pathetic.
If it takes Obama to shut up all the crazy people accusing whites of being racists, then so be it. But having a black man as president isn’t going to solve anything except put an extra large flame under “black powah’” and even more racism.
I seriously think that all the southern republican states should join and form a new country…because we’re the only smart people in the country. In fact, they don’t even have to be southern. They just have to be smart (a.k.a. – Republican)!!

i am so tired of the media talking about race. We are all United States citizens. There should be no color in any ones eye.
We should all be proud to be a American citizen

I would like someone to actually be honest and tell me that this is NOT a racial election. If people of this country are supportive of the Democratic Party so much so then why didn’t they CHANGE it in the prior election. This idea of the polls are claiming that it is more of a AGE problem than a racial then why is it that a 35 year old African American man now votes? It is not for the party it is not for the issues at hand it is only because Obama is a half black man. For a Disabled Veteran I am disgusted in a would be Commander and Chief that would not wear the Flag. Maybe we should all reflect on our past and what we stand for as a country. What did men die over in the revolutionary war? Oh the FLAG! I am sick and tired of people complaining about our troops overseas and lets get them home. I would love to see my friends that I lost during the war but if you didnt realize that when a Republican is in office the men and women of our military recieved key equipment to sustain themselves as well as a raise every year which helps the people that are protecting each and everyone of us. What would happen if Obama wins let me just take words from his mouth cut government spending which means the men and women in uniforms will be in poverty again and I doubt Obama’s idea of semi communistic crap of giving every one money will let out troops collect their foods stamps and 5lb blocks of cheese. Does no one question that the majority of the people on welfare are blacks? Also the fact that the majority of those people are driving brand new BMW and Audi vehicles plus living in those 600k houses that are now in foreclosure? due to them living the “High life” It wasn’t the republicans that screwed the economy it was the people that believe a interest only loan was the way to go about living their dream. Lets thank those lovely people for our economic situation. Thanks I would enjoy that someone would touch base of this opinion on the Air.

Well Reverend, I don’t think there’s anything worse than someone who throws the Bible & religion into something that has nothing to do with religion. You people are the worst king of racists, hypocrites, and sinners I’ve ever had the displeasure of hearing or reading. The Bible is fantasy. Written by people who wanted to scare the people of their times into being moral. God is supposed to be the judge of the people of this world, not man. How would you feel if someone told you that you couldn’t be married to the person of your choice, or be a so called Reverend? How would you feel if someone took away your right to choose anything? You take all your choices for granted because you’re probably a white male who thinks he has the right to dictate to others what they can or cannot do. I am a white female, & you are the kind of man that needs to be wiped out in this country.

What do you mean what happened to the Republican party? The slanted, biased press, you guys, are what happened. You’ve been shoving this socialist down everyone’s throat for the past two years now giving free coverage on a daily basis. BO has broken his promise regarding funding. For the millions and millions he has spent (and received much from unknown donors/countries), the Republicans are doing excellently. Had you people represented each candidate fairly and impartially, BO would have been blown out of the water. You biased press are responsible for the demise of democracy. Just like the press that BO kicked off his plane because they gave support to McCain, you will be monitored to present things as BO demands. I hope you’re satisfied. You don’t seem to have any conception of what you have wrought.

It brings tears to my eyes to finally see the American people vote. Presidential elections have good turnouts but this is pleasantly overwhelming. I can’t wait for Obama to win this election. He did to election days and politics what Michael Jordan did for basketball.

“How can anyone vote for a person who is so openly for abortion. Who wants a person with those kind of morals as the most powerful man in the world. I can’t imagine anyone being for the killing of babies, especially in late-term situations.”
The key to solving abortion is not in the banning. Its in the changing of values, decision-making, and behavior.
Banning murder has NEVER stopped murder, so it won’t work here either.
Abortion situations get created from people doing what they want, the wanting makes it count as permission. A relative of mine had one. She was going to that unsupervised party, and you were not going to tell her no.
She had NO intention of having sex OR getting pregnant, but her doing what she wanted PUT her there.
The proper way to perform abortions is to have no sex, protected sex, surgical procedures, ANY NUMBER of ways to simply not get in that position. That’s where you not only WIN this, but SOLVE this!
Banning abortions puts a burdening rule on people who are doing the proper thing. It is making secondary victims of people already violated-we couldn’t protect you the first crime, we will deliberately victimize you the second time. And oh yeah, that pesky “it won’t work” thing.
Choice should be a right-but it should be treated as an HONORARY right. A right you have, but do your very level best to NEVER EVER use.

Today was my first time voting for president and I think it was a great experience not only voicing my thoughts about who I was voting for but getting involved in researching the issues and where each candidate stood. When Bush was running for president I found I wasn’t involved a whole lot. That is because I was not able to vote. Now I was able to vote and find I am much more interested in the election results. I voted for Obama because of what he stands for and will do for this country now that it is in such an economical disaster and needs help. I am 22 and am just appalled to see this country in such a critical state. We need change and we need it NOW!

The 12th amendment to the US Constitution states that “Electors shall meet in their respective states, and vote by ballot for President and Vice-President” and then “they shall sign and certify, and transmit sealed to the seat of the government of the United States, directed to the President of the Senate”. This is the electoral college. This is how the president of the United States is selected.
Each state may pick these electors in whatever way it wants. It is a custom, but not a requirement under the Constitution, that a popular vote is held in each state for the selection process. When you “vote for president” you are actually voting for an elector who agrees with your choice.
Never in the history of the United States has the president actually been elected by a popular referendum

We are all human here, we all walk the same God Given Earth, and in order to have Peace we need to start on the Home Front.

How is it possible for ABC or any other network to project the winner of a state, when that state has only 2% of its precincts reporting in? There’s 98% of that states precincts that still has to report in. And, they could easily go the other way and make that network look not very smart. It just seems a bit premature & irresponsible to me that they would do this.

Matthew, you are a dunce. Why don’t you actually take a look at why the economy is in such ruins. How about all those greedy investors on Wall Street who sold those very loans you spoke about 10 times over with no real backing to them. How about those same greedy people on Wall Street who lied about those investments by changing them to A class investements instead of the C class investments they were? How about all the greedy loan companies trying to make a quick buck by giving all that money to people who had no business getting those loans? Black people are not the only people who are in foreclosure. Wake up dude! You have no idea what your talking about. Guess what, a lot of people were told that in 2 years when your payment is supposed to go up you can refinance & get a fixed rate loan if you pay your mortgage on time every month for those 2 years only to find the bottom dropping out of the market, finding the homes they purchased worth 20% less than what they paid for it, finding no institution that will give them a new loan because the home is worth 20% less than they paid for it & then when asking those greedy companies to freeze their interest rate so they can continue to make the mortgage payments because they’ve done the right thing for 2 years and then be given a resounding “NO”, then maybe you can put people down for trying to live their dream. I am a white, middle class hard working woman who is married to a very hard working, middle class white man, so take your opinion & shove it up your white arse.

Hey Judy
Maybe you haven’t realized but the whites are not the ones that express the racial slurs. It is far more the blacks being against the whites. Slavery was 200 plus years ago it is by far long enough to shut the hell up. Im irish 100 percent from the grandparents to the actual parents but born and bred in the states you don’t hear me calling myself an irish american do you? Or how about the fact that the irish were the first to be slaves? We were in the carribean working the sugar cane fields far before any black man was. So read your history before your “educated” mind speaks

Although there is all this talk about how much the election is not focused around race, I personally think that is a basically a cover up and mainly a lie. Everything eventually comes down to race. Why was Martin Luther King shot? The KKK, why did they have the ability to have such an influence?
If race was not such a big factor than how come all the political analysts from abc who have the main coverage over the election are talking bout how many white voters in fact either voted for Obama and why it was such a shock that they did or why the mexican population in states like New Mexico did not vote for McCain.
The fact that race is no longer an issue is crap. Though I do believe that it has gone down, that does not mean it has disappeared.
And I am a white teenager in Illinois. Although some may say that I do not know what I am talking about or have any right to say this, I do have every right and it is cause I realize the truth.

~okay, so i’m a Cali girl at heart, and not old enough to take part of this election (maybe next time guys) but i find it rather nausiating that people will vote for an individual just because he supports homosexual marriage. intrestingly enough, i am christian myself and i know the whole “God made it VERY clear to us that marriage is between a man and a woman” but who are we to pass judgement?
if what people are doing behind closed doors does not subject you to seeing it or being a part of it,and it is other than making you feel uncomfortable, then what is the problem. homosexual people are no different tham the rest of us, they just have a different sexual preference. open your eyes to the inevitable change around you, its going to happen whether you like it or not, just are we going to force it off longer? HISTORICAL FACT: americans delayed in solving the issue of slavery for a long time and what did it do? it festered until a humungous war broke out and many many AMERICANS died fighting one another!!! if we could accept the change, we could avoid something dramatic from happening.

Every channel is flooded with inner-city predominately black coverage points. I have not seen statements from any republicans all night. It seems that people are voting for Obama on the sole basis of his race, and not for sure facts! There are two points I have loved from this election: Oprah stating that “we will even take the drug addicts votes,” and the scene in Philadelphia earlier today with Black Panthers with night sticks preventing McCain supporters from entering the voting precinct!

What a great day for American politics. For the first time in my entire life (i’m 28) I can say that I truly believe that my vote has counted for something. I really feel like I made a difference. I’m proud to be a part of our system of government, to play such an integral role. No matter who wins tonight, our country is turning a new page in its progression into the sort of true “melting pot” that we’ve always invisioned. I couldn’t be more pleased to an American tonight.

Hey, I think, since BO is going to want to “spread the wealth” that you people should all lead by example. Show that wonderful support you have been giving to that man and open the coffers of your own bank accounts and savings. You don’t deserve to keep what you earned either! Awe come on people, it doesn’t really matter who the President is. Every politician is corrupt. The White House is a negotiation. It’s you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours up there for everyone. They all go in there thinking they can make a difference & when they get there they find out everyone has their hands in everyone elses pockets and you cannot get anything you want without compromising your principals, morales & well hell, probably your wife & kids. Come on, don’t any of you know that yet? Black or white, racist or not, it’s all male cow dung anyway.

Ms. Christine Cummins, how do you feel now? I must admit, your comments are very cold. We are all the same kind of people. Can you just accept that? We are now in 2008. Please open your eyes and look around. The next president of the United States is a man of color. This is a historic moment. Hence, we must all come together in uninty and be an example to the world. I CAN TELL YOU ARE RACIST. For the record, i am not African American. However, i am a proud man of color, and i love you because we are all God’s children.
I beseech you to join the fascinating celebration.
Cheers,

Christine, with all due respect, you are completely out of line. I cannot belie you said that on the forum.
I know you are unhappy. However, you do not have a choice at this point but to accept Mr. Obama as your next president.
God bless you and good night!
Shalom,
Ciano

you are just another trash talker, who I can say without regret, If you stood in front of a black or latin man or woman for that matter, your fat, overweight ass would not dare speak the words you have spoken tonight!

Posted by: Jose Luna | November 5, 2008, 12:09 am 12:09 am

Ok..you can do that….
and then I’ll make sure you’re locked up for the rest of your life on charges of rape and unconsented sex with a minor.

Posted by: Jose Luna | November 5, 2008, 12:22 am 12:22 am

Hahaha..what?
I wasn’t kidding when I said I support Obama.
I do.
George Bush once said : “Everyone has something to decide-you’re either with the U.S.A., or you’re the terrorist.”
I’m American..and if America is to be lead by Barrack Obama, then I’m all for being led by him.
That’s just how I am.

Congratulations to President-elect Obama!!! My condolences to you on your grandmother’s passing at this time in your life.
I feel badly that MLK jr. did not live to see his dream for America come true.
John McCain’s speech was totally eloquent.
God Bless America!!

Correction: MLK’s dream was not to have a black president, it was to have everyone live in harmony.
You can look at it in 1 of 3 ways:
1. Having a black president solves the racial issues in the U.S., and thus, solving racism -or-
2. Having a president with black skin does not solve racism and that by recognizing him as ‘black’, we’re still technically be racists.
3. Who cares if he’s black or not? Race should not be a deciding factor in a president–after all race determines nothing but skin color.
