More on Pennsylvania
How did the Obama folks win the state the McCain campaign had worked so hard to pick away from Democrats?
"Overcame any doubt by focusing on the economy," says one Obama adviser. You might recall the doubts about Obama being able to win the state after Sen. Hillary Clinton thumped him by 9 points in the Democratic primary.
57% of Pennsylvanians say they are "very worried" about the economy, the exit polls say — 65% of them voted for Obama.
"Did markedly better in central and northern PA (the T) than Kerry did," says another Obama campaign staffer. "Turnout was amazing for us in Philly as well as the Philly burbs."
The Obama folks had a big ground game in Pennsylvania, looking at not only bringing out the vote in Democratic and swing areas of the state, but everywhere.
And look at the get out the vote effort there:
59% of PA voters were contacted by the Obama campaign — 73% of them voted for Obama.
39% of PA voters were contacted by the McCain campaign — 55% of them voted for McCain.

This is one Pennsylvanian who voted for McCain. I am extremely fearful of what this country would look like IF Obama actually does win tonight. We will not recognize this country in four years and it will NOT be for the better. Whenever there has been a Democrat in the White House, my husband and I have done terribly economically. During the Clinton years, my husband took a 40% pay cut in his job & I took a 7% paycut. We CANNOT afford that again.

My wife and I are both life-long democrats. But we were each undecided before entering the polling booth. I would have voted for McCain because I do not believe that Obama can deliver half of the changes he is promising.
But I could not vote for Palin to be Vice President because she is neither experienced nor qualified to be a heartbeat away from the presidency. So I voted for Biden in hopes that he can bring experience and leadership to a junior Senator from Illinois.

Frank, Frank, Frank… Lindsey’s not looking for welfare and she probably knows that McCain voted against benefits (like education) going towards the military and their families. She’s not a welfare recipient, she’s a military wife! She sees the difference that McCain didn’t see.

Obama linked McCain to President Bush and did a good job of it. I don’t agree that President Bush was the worst president in history…yea he made mistakes, but the man does get a little leway because of 9/11…as well he should. If the republicans chose Thompson or Romney…might be a different story right now, but there was this loyalty they felt to McCain and doing so, we lost this election.

I’m starting a ‘time capsule’ for my two grandsons. I want them to know how huge this win is, not only for Obama/Biden, but for America.
I was born in 1951 to racist parents and a horrifically racist America. I was taught not to look a black person in the face “because they will beat you up”-my father. Fortunately, I was able to un-learn the ignorance and learn the truth-America is really a melting pot. Either we learn to work together, or we will ‘glob up the pot’ and this wonderful, wonderful country of ours will be of no good to anyone.
As an American of immigrant roots-Irish, English, Dutch, French-it was a privilege to vote for Obama. This doesn’t erase our ugly racist past, but is a huge leap to the future. We must all work together to get America back on the road to energy independence, a robust economy and continued freedoms for all.
God bless us every one!

If one party does gain the upper hand we all loose. That is why we have the checks and balances………. To keep it fair for all of us.

We the people.
We want. There are many things we want. We are truly blessed to live in a nation where we can voice and pursue what we want. What we dream.
It is our responsibility to identify the things that we can do for ourselves and the things we need help doing. I think when people feel powerless, that is when they want or expect our government to step in and do something. It would be nice if there were a number to call to make our troubles go away. We know it’s not that easy.
We all have special interests. I believe we have buried ourselves in minutia. Being president; being a leader of any kind means prioritizing, delegating, and negotiating.
The greatest of presidents will be the ones who empower the people. We should be looking for a partner with which to build a better nation, in an atmosphere of respect and cooperation.
This will be hard work. Personally, I prefer hard work to complaining and waiting for a handout. It’s not about what you can’t do- it’s about what you can.
We tend to forget that the good things in our lives have come as a result of great sacrifice.
We can not expect that we may receive without some form of payment. To erase debt you must stop spending. To save resources you must conserve. A new way of living, and new way of seeing, a new way of understanding needs to be learned before we can claim our birthright. We Americans are scorned by many in the rest of the world. Deep down we know why. Many of us have taken our birthright: spent it, borrowed on it, and squandered it. It will take a great leader to help us see this. To see that we ourselves are guilty of many of the things we blame our government for. A GREAT leader will help us all find a way to move on. To join with us in again making this a nation the rest of the world envies for our GREATNESS. We are all responsible for the success of our nation. If we do not hold politicians accountable they will continue with the same old game. How many people could say that they would refuse a handout, or a hand up? The accountability, the reputation, the accomplishments of our country rests in our hands. Every time we turn out a light, do a good job, and build someone up instead of tear them down.
Let’s come together, stop fighting about fundamental differences and Start building toward WORKING COMPROMISES. Our vote is our chance to participate in our democracy but it should not end on election day.
Let’s start Rebuilding America!

Overlooked reason. I grew up in Philadelphia and can tell you the type of campaign that McCain ran does not resonate with Pennsylvanians. All the name calling we see on these boards and represented by the McCain camp is antithetical to the principles of the found of the Commonwealth. You are brought up learning about “brotherly love,” accepting diversity of opinion, and tolerance. While we are paradoxically belligerent when it comes to sports and fat men in red suits, we still have a basic understanding of these principles. Consider us “Value voters.” McCain and Republicans failed to grasp this and effectively wasted their resources.

People blame Bush for getting our economy in trouble when he isn’t the cause. He became president at a bad time. It was democratic Bill Clinton who got us 5 trillion dollars in debt, but no one seems to blame him, they only blame Bush. Now I agree that Bush could have done some better issues to help our economy, but we didn’t have to go elect a socialist in the office who thinks we should “SPREAD THE WEALTH” which is communist views.

Republicans, you have a rebuilding job ahead. After almost 30 years of Reaganomics, the ‘trickle down” theory of economics is truly dead. Don’t like government regulation? Well, giving greedy profiteers a blank slate to pillage gave us the economic/banking crisis.
Watching from Canada, it was bizarre to see McCain and Palin running *against* the GOP and the whole GWB Jr. record. Palin is pathetically underqualified. McCain had no real campaign platform. All he and Palin did was oppose anything the Democrats proposed.

My prediction for the coming years.
We will go from a recession to a depression.
Your taxes will go down, you don’t pay any when you are unemployed.
First companies will put a hiring freeze on then next the lay offs begin.
Your utility taxes, gas taxes, heating
taxes will all go up. Along with property taxes.
Your parents will no longer be able to
fund your college years. You will now have to go out and try to find a job.
Afterall you just voted for this change.
Those of you who were hoping to retire and to sell your big house and downsize and keep the rest to live off will now have to pay capital gains on the sale. You will find it not worth it to move plus no one will have the money to buy your home. Heck you may even have to take in your married children and grandchildren.
I also don’t believe that stock market will fully recover. It is going to jump up and down. Hope it does not crash. Anyway who has any money to play
the stock market? I will leave that for the big boys.
I am sorry that Joe the Plumber was unjustly criticized. Gov Palin was put through the meat ginder by the media why? I believe Washington did not want her there and would do anything to keep
her out. Why? Because she promised to
clean up Washington.
I have done my own research on the candidates (not headline news) and voted for whom I thought would be the best for this country. McCain/Palin And I still think they would have been a better choice.

afford,
Wow. You just described the last 8 years and think you’re predicting the future.
Change was definitely in order. I am so glad Obama/Biden will bring it!

Investors poured into European and Asian stocks Tuesday as U.S. voters went to the polls to select a new president and as Morgan Stanley gave an upbeat assessment of the prospects for stocks.
The rallies continued early Wednesday in Asia, with the Nikkei Stock Average surging 3.2% in midday trading after Sen. Barack Obama was declared the winner of the U.S presidential election.

The libs are right people living in Pennsylvania are backwards and uneducated how else can anybody with any intelligence explain Murtha. This career politician who cares more about his lavish lifestyle in Northeast Virginia than anyone or thing in Pennsylvania.
Libs it seems will always have trouble with the truth, how many poor people do you know hire people, if we tax the rich i.e. coporations what the reality will be is more unemployment and higher prices. Pennsylvania like Ohio, Michigan and other democrat controlled state is a victim of the liberal economic policy which drives corporations out of the area thus increasing unemployment and the tax burden on those of us fortunate to work.
Reaganomics works when libs don’t interfer as with lower corporate tax’s there is more employment thus increasing the tax base.
The tax cuts so maligned by the libs is responsible for an increase in tax revenue’s.

Murtha re-elected? The libs were right those in Pa are basically uneducated and out of touch. How could people possibly re-elect a man so anti- vet, anti-senior, anti-American. A man more interested in maintaining his lavish lifestyle in Northern Virginia that anything or anybody in Pa. The man meets lobbiests with his hand out and vote for sale and those of you who voted for him are responsible for him.

Pennsylvanians have spoken. They preferred hope over negativity!! I respect their decision. This is Democracy at it’s best. This is America at it’s best!!!! They believed in “yes we can”! They believed in the grassroots movement of “yes we can make a difference”! They chose not to believe “fear”! How wise they are/were!!

Today was the most wonderful day to awaken here in Virginia. I really had my doubts about O winning knowing how many of my neighbors are still so bigoted and racist and voted for McCain, but we believers still pulled it off and O won our state despite them.
I can’t begin to tell you how I feel inside myself kinda like a little kid with a smile from ear to ear. I was here when JFK won his election, but was so young [17 years old] with no knowledge about politics or even how poliicians ‘directly’ effect our lives, and therefore knew nothing about voting or the process in general. Having been apolitical a good deal of my adult life [primarily due to the few times when I was involved and always seemed to have the election turn out for the other guy], I took a big chance again with my emotionals in supporting O [after Gore and Kerry both lost] and boy did it pay off and pay off BIG! I feel as though I won the lottery and never again need to worry about finances! What a night and what a great morning to awaken today and listen to all those who are forced to eat crow and admit they were so wrong. It truly feels like the greatest euphoria I have known in years.
BTW, I am an old white woman who now happens to believe in dreams that come true even at my age!

The saddest thing about Obama’s win is seeing all the haters post on the blogs. Despite their hate, everything Obama does will benefit us ALL [not just his supporters, but all the racists and bigots as well]. And that is the ‘reality’ because Obama believes that ALL Americans should prosper as he tries to make our country and the world a better place. I am not young and therefore not stupid as I understand this will NOT occur immediately, but I do understand it WILL occur in every way possible under his leadership as he strives to bring us a better future and a “united” nation.
So for all the haters, racists and bigots, please try to take a moment alone to at least try to understand that you too will benefit along with all who supported him. What a bright day for America whether you chose to believe it or not!

Josephine: Perhaps you should take a moment to study the exist polls. Obama won the vote of those who let race factor into their decision by a LANDSLIDE. It was YOUR kind that let race decide their vote. Funny how you racists kept blaming decent Americans of that for the last 6 months.. huh?
As for any benefit for us all.. that simply isn’t the case. Economists have already starting calling our current problems the “Obama recession.” His policy of hammering business at every turn is not going to benefit anybody. The US stock markets 1 day in have gone back into crash mode, this is going to be the trend for years.
One day in the near future racists like you are going to look back and wonder why you chose to base your vote on race instead of issues.. and the decent people in this country aren’t going to feel a lot of sympathy for you.

I did not vote for President elect Obama. I have voted for black cand in the past. Therefore I will not tolarate being called a raciest, just because I did not vote for President elect Obama. For some of us it is a pro-life issue. On Oct 7, 2007 Obama spoke to planned parent hood. he said the first thing I will do as president is pass the Freedom of Choice act. Once he does that it will be a Federal civil right to get an abortion. Therefore a Catholic doctor at a Catholic hospital would NOT be permitted to refuse the proceedure. He/she would be violtaing the federal civil rights of the patient. There fore Obama would effectivly CLOSE ALL Catholic hospitals in the nation. I guess if you think that is good, than fine. I just respectfully disagree.

52 percent of the poplar vote is not a landslide by any defination. I admitt it is a comfortable lead, but it is not a landslide. An example is Reagan won with 59 percent of the vote. Nevertheless Obama is President. Although I did not vote for him, I will pray for him none the less
