President-elect Obama has tapped his Senate chief of staff Pete Rouse to be a White House Senior Adviser,

To be Deputy White House Chief of Staff he has named former NSC staffer Mona Sutphen from Stonebridge International LLC; and Jim Messina, national chief of staff to the Obama campaign.

Politico’s Mike Allen is reporting that Obama has decided on Greg Craig to be White House counsel.

Obama’s resignation of his U.S. Senate seat kicks in today; a "thank you letter" from him to the citizens of the Land of Lincoln appears in various Illinois newspapers today.

"It was long ago that another son of Illinois left for Washington," Obama writes.

"A greater man who spoke to a nation far more divided, Abraham Lincoln, said of his home, ‘To this place, and the kindness of these people, I owe everything.’ Today, I feel the same, and like Lincoln, I ask for your support, your prayers, and for us to ‘confidently hope that all will yet be well.’"
