Moving Toward a Post-Racial America

One of the most stunning facts of the turnout tonight is that only 74 percent of the electorate in this election was white. Go back to 1976 and 90 percent of the electorate was white. We are seeing the rise of Hispanic and African American voters. This is the first election of the future. In many ways, we are moving toward a post-racial America. Look at how race really wasn’t an issue in this campaign. Eighty percent of voters said they didn’t take it into account anyway, and only 19 percent of the voters said they did. And Obama won both groups. –George Stephanopoulos

America has gone back to be a beacon of light in the world, a lighthouse pointing to what is possible.
God Bless America and the World.
The world is a better place because of America’s actions today.

America, I am a Swiss citizen who share your happiness and pride today. Last night I got calls from my children, two of whom live in the USA. My daughter, a lawyer in NC, my son a science teacher in NY, but also another son, a hotel manager in Asia and a student here, all shared my joy and all cried with happiness over the election results. This morning my housekeeper, a woman from Spain, was also crying when I went downstairs! It is so wonderful to know that my children now feel the same about America as I did when JF Kennedy was elected. Americans you belong to the greatest country on earth. We look forward to your leadership in this difficult time – you always come through when the world needs you! God Bless America, the greatest country on earth!

Don’t kid yourself, George. This country is as racist as ever. In our politically correct society of today, people just do a better job of concealing it.
If the Republican Party had fielded a more Centrist ticket with a credible VP selection, the white vote would have just as easily shifted away from Barack.
You can be sure that if there is no marked improvement in the country’s direction shortly after Inauguration, there will be plenty of people blaming it on his skin color. The true irony is that we can have a WHITE leadership destroy our nation’s international credibility, take our nation to the brink of bankruptcy, and prove beyond any doubt its complete incompetence in managing the affairs of State, and still there will be people who will believe if things don’t improve under Obama- it will be because he’s BLACK.

52% – 47% .. yep – we’re past racism! Only around 50% of the country is racist because they didn’t vote for Obama! Nonsense! Get over it .. go talk to the 96% of blacks who voted STRICTLY due to his skin color and get back to us and tell us WHO is racist! Oh well – like I’ve said over and over .. no president has ever determined my fate or success and for those of you who are banking on that GOOD LUCK TO YA! Ha ha!

I am dissapointed in Oprah Winfry stating, Obama is the first person she has supported up for election. I have voted and supported candidates for 63 years. Gov. Kaine supported Obama and now a racist group is trying to sue him for how distribution of poles were placed. Yes, a black man deserves to win, but how he has won scares me.

I´m German, but I have friends in America and I know about their true and honest wishes, that Obama should succeed. I congratulate them and all the others who elected Obama. Anyhow I agree with babaganoosh, and I´m really worried about that … Maybe we´re lucky and there will be a marked improvement in the country´s direction … And this also depends on you, the US citizens, but also on international policy. Because the whole world is cross-linked, which was impressively demonstrated by the world wide financial and economic crisis, which started somewhere in the age of George W. – thank globalization!

Racism is alive and well. When 97 of blacks vote for obama what else can you call it. The sad part is that while 43% of whites are willing to vote for a black, we now have been duped into electing a clever racist liberal who listened to Rev. Wright spew racism and white hating for 20 years. The only reason Obama won (and the liberal media will not talk about) is the shifting (more black and minority) face of america and the deplorable immigration problem. The fact that Obama’s aunt is an illegal lying and living off of government housing illegally is testament to the Obama fraud.

Posted by: Rob | November 5, 2008, 6:23 am 6:23 am

Marcus and babaganoosh,
Much of what you say is true. Perhaps an identical copy of Obama with white skin would have commanded an even clearer victory.
Many people will scrutinize Obama’s upcoming presidency even more because he’s multi-racial. They’ll be ready to pounce on every mistake.
Still, this was a tremendous step forward. It required a perfect chain of events, from GWB’s futile war in Iraq to the meltdown in the banking sector.
Now I just pray that some lunatic doesn’t do something crazy and deprive us of this chance.

Very big day. Congratulations for all Americans/ Fact that black citizen can become President of USA – is wonderful and one more time tells that USA is great country, able to overcome it’s own racist past. I hope B.Obama can become successor of greatest american Presidents – traditions of Linkoln, Washington, Ruzevelt are still alive. And I hope that relations with Russia will be much better now… I think Bush’s foreign policy created much of hostile attitude in majority of Russians to USA. Also I hope that Obama can help to fix world economy. Looking ahead for changes…

Oprah Winfry commented, “Obama is the first person she has supported in an election.” As a proud American voter for 63 years I have supported candidates and voted on the issues for 63 years. Yes,a black man deserves to become president, but this election has scared me.
I posted comments once before on this issue and posted the incorrect email, sorry.

Obama is a radical idiot, he will destory this country with liberal policys and judges he appoints and the decisions he makes in that office, as for God Blessing America, my prayers is that God does not turn His back on us, we are on the brink of Gods Wrath on this Country.

I am very scared. The people in this country elected a man who 1) won’t prove he’s actually eligible to be President 2)who wants to create a civilian armed militia (can anyone say ‘Secret Police’) 3)Who wants to “change our behavior” through taxation. I’m not sure that even 1/2 of the 62 Million who voted for him understand what they were voting for. I’m just praying that God can see us through these next four years & that people have their eyes opened.

I must give credit to Obama and his staff for beating not just McCain but Hillary! Beating Hillary was a major/major victory more so than beating McCain.
I just have to say that the MSM was so far in the tank for Obama and they did the american people no justice! It was not until the last week of this election that they had the Bal** to start looking (ever so lightly) into some of his past. I will say thisnot only did this election make history so did the MSM because that was the year it died!
I just hope the millions of people who voted for Obama are as happy in 2 years as they are today. I especially think of this Black or Afriance American woman who truely believed that voting for Obama she would not longer have to pay for her gas or house payment. I beat in 2 years time if you interview her again she will be crying still but not with tears of joy!

Also, thanks so much to the citizens of the world who posted comments, I hope this sends a message that there is still hope for the principles which this great country was founded upon. We are not perfect, far from it. But the audacity of hope still thrives among us!

George just stated on GMA that race was less of a factor than expected. True for whites, but according to his own percentages, it must have been almost the ONLY factor for blacks….it’s still racist. He said “McCain got 1% of the black voters, which is amazing in itself” But this election wasn’t racist????

Posted by: Sue | November 5, 2008, 7:31 am 7:31 am

Jeez Louise, so many silly people posting here. I am African-American and am part of the 96 to 98% of African Americans who voted for Obama. THAT IS NOT RACISM you nitwits out there, since we are IN THE MINORITY in this country. The life chances and happiness quotient off African Americans has been systematically compromised since the forming of this “more perfect union” and all Americans know that. Second, I am a resident of Chicago in the GREAT STATE OF ILLINOIS. Whenever I see people writing so harsly about Obama being racist, Muslim, or non-American or unpatriotic. WE ELECTED HIM AND FOUND HIM TO BE NONE OF THOSE THINGS, so WHAT YOU ARE SAYING OFFENDS ILLINOISANS GREATLY. I think back to when WE elected him with over 70% of the vote in 2004….so I guess us Illinoisans-black, white, hispanic and asian-are responsible for unleashing this putrid, Muslim moron on you, right. Also, the “real” America Sarah Palin was spewing all her falsities to is shrinking not because of us African Americans but because AMERICA IS A LAND OF IMMIGRANTS you nitwits…your ancestors came here, mine were forced here so I think you might wanna go back to where YOUR forefathers came from if you dont like Obama being your president..most African Americans’ families have been here longer and actually made the country the superpower it became (FOR FREE btw..remember slavery?. And there is my racially-charge two cents.

Why don’t you lose your bitter vitriolic thoughts and join the solution. Partisan politics and hate have eaten away at our fabric as a nation for too long. It is time to discard the useless past of partisan politics and cynicism and come together to solve our problems. Be a part of the solution not a part of the problem.

The media is feeding racism.
The only ones injecting race in this election is the Obama supporters and the media. All of you at ABC last night and Oprah too. It was terrible.
Most that vote see a man, you people see a black man. So when are we going to move forward? Ask yourselves first.

The black vote has always been way higher for Democrats. But of course, the racists just doesnt have the brains to figure that one out. Theyre sitting in their trailer parks going… ‘duuuuh’ like Beavis & Butthead.
Oh well, theres always that % of population that is just a pollution of the gene pool. That pollution is called the republicans.

Posted by: Hwang | November 5, 2008, 8:09 am 8:09 am

I don’t understand how this can be described as “post racial” while 92 percent of one race votes for the person of the same race. This should have been titeled “moving toward a post-white America”, but I suppose Mr. Stephanopoulos thought that sounded too threatening to some people.

Posted by: DougBH | November 5, 2008, 8:09 am 8:09 am

Post racial? I don’t think so. Obama played the race card early (against Bill Clinton, no less) and instilled fear in the press and politicians, that kept them from telling the truth. We don’t have any record of him before he started running, except that he was a community organizer (he was at Harvard, but there is no record and no statements have been made of what he did there, for example). During the primary, Obama’s race card scared superdelegates into supporting him, and also got him free delegates in Michigan, where his name wasn’t even on the ballot. Appealing to race is just about as low as anyone can go, and so, Obama reveals what he is.

Posted by: tina | November 5, 2008, 8:10 am 8:10 am

Another point, its totally unbelievable how the ignorant racists refuse to acknowledge all the people who voted McCain just because they could NOT vote for a black man. Why arent they calling those racists out?
Also Obama had the young voters, are they going to call it ‘ageism’ too?

Posted by: JoeShmoe | November 5, 2008, 8:13 am 8:13 am

Thank goodness I can finally be proud of my country now that a black man is president! Maybe now, his wife can be a proud American. We finally got rid of all those whities! Whoooo hoooo! Never mind that he is obviously a Muslim. Affirmative action will never go away now. Thanks alot America! You will now get what you are asking for. Socialism. It works great in England.

Posted by: Chance | November 5, 2008, 8:15 am 8:15 am

Every Black person that I work with voted for Obama because he is black. They flat-out told me that! Admit it, it was a racist effort. Otherwise, I would have voted for him based on his qualification’s, however, he had none, so obviously it was for another reason. I would be cheering right along side everyone else if Alan Keys was the new president. he is AA, and a good conservative. Well, at least we defeated the liberals Gay marriage agenda in many states. we made a little headway.

Posted by: John | November 5, 2008, 8:22 am 8:22 am

Rob: I agree with you. Obama’s victory came because of this young generation of white college students that don’t have the brains to sit on or a window to throw them out of. They are in their own little world of drugs and booze like Obama was in his college days. If it wasn’t for Pelosi swindling Hillary out of her delegates she would be the President now. And the youth in this country are living in a dream world but they will wake up to reality when it all happens and this country goes down further than what it is now. Everything looks good to them now, but wait until the explosion. And Bin Laden was waiting for the outcome of this election.

Posted by: Mariann Pepitone | November 5, 2008, 8:25 am 8:25 am

Just reading some of the posts here just proves my earlier point–Racism is alive and well in America!
Isn’t it funny that hundreds of thousands of Blacks have voted in previous Presidential elections for White candidates, but when they chose overwhelmingly to vote for a Black candidate- that’s Racism.
I guess all of the Whites who voted for a White candidate last night and in all previous Presidential elections must have been Racist, too – for Whites only.
If you’re a Racist and don’t like Blacks, just say so.
Don’t hide behind statements like:
“go talk to the 96% of blacks who voted STRICTLY due to his skin color”
“When 97 of blacks vote for obama what else can you call it. The sad part is that while 43% of whites are willing to vote for a black”
“97% of AA voted for Obama! Oprah supported a candidate for the first time….Would they have done that for a white man??”
It only makes your point very hollow. You’d gain much more respect if you just came out and said “I’m White, a Racist, and proud to be one!” or “I hate all Blacks” instead of skirting around the topic.

Posted by: babaganoosh | November 5, 2008, 8:26 am 8:26 am

In terms of the high African American numbers for Obama, it’s important to remember that 90% of blacks voters voted for Kerry and around 95% voted for Bill Clinton. As a demographic, blacks generally vote for Democrats, so Obama’s number is only slightly higher. And a lot of blacks voted for Hilary Clinton over Obama in the primaries, so it’s not fair to dismiss blacks as racist because they did what they usually do and voted Democratic.

Posted by: Think it through | November 5, 2008, 8:27 am 8:27 am

I’m still trying to figure out how Obama got to be our first “Black President”. Isn’t he bi-racial? And how much difference would that have made if he was wasn’t bi-racial, full black? In ALL the elections I have voted in I still think we need to go with the POPULAR vote. This system sucks as to where they campaign and who they campaign to for the big numbers, not the people they will be serving. All sides, all candidates. I’m just hoping this truly is the dawn of a New Era for us all, not just the blacks everyone is touting for stepping up, what about the rest of us who have been caring and voting for years?

Posted by: Kathy | November 5, 2008, 8:30 am 8:30 am

I don’t understand how people can say that race was not an issue in the Presidential race…
A primarily African-American radio station listed places in America where there were hundreds of thousands of unregistered African-American people. They said if these people would register and vote, they could change this election. Please explain to me how this means that race is NOT an issue. They implied that all African-American voters would vote for Obama…
Racism goes both ways people…unfortunately it’s not gone…

Posted by: Chelsea | November 5, 2008, 8:33 am 8:33 am

Well congratulations to Obama! However there’s one thing. HE IS NOT OUR 1st black president he is our 1st MULATTOE(mixed black AND WHITE) president! Also for those millions of Americans out there: HISPANIC IS NOT A RACE IT IS A LIGUISTIC GROUP! HISPANICS CAN BE OF ANY RACE ESPECIALLY WHITE! I understand though since race is ALWAYS being confused in America, sadly as we are one of the most diverse nations in the world and we dont even know what is a race or not. But god bless America and may god protect Obama!

Posted by: Christian | November 5, 2008, 8:40 am 8:40 am

Kathy, there’s a difference between saying race was an issue (which of course it was–in a country with our history, how could it not be) and saying people were racist because of who they voted for. A lot of whites voted for McCain because they believed in his policies and ideas, not because they were racist. I’m sure some others voted for him because they couldn’t stomach the idea of a black president. And it would be ridiculous to think that blacks aren’t so excited to vote for a black president, but it’s not all about race because I am certain of one thing: a lot of blacks would not have voted for Clarence Thomas. Barack Obama is a really unique figure in politics. We’re all missing the point if we attribute his success and the admiration so many Americans have for him to his race alone.

Posted by: Think it through | November 5, 2008, 8:51 am 8:51 am

Post Racial? A dream. 98% of blacks voted for a black man for no other reason. If 98% of whites had voted for McCain, we would be vilifying ourselves and you would not have this post.

Posted by: George in Germantown | November 5, 2008, 8:52 am 8:52 am

To the racists who ‘dont accept’ the outcome of this election:
You would never accept anyone but your own candidate, thats not democracy. You’re spitting on the Democracy, America and the Constitution.
The Republicans live in the wrong era and in the wrong country. They fit perfectly in 1930s Germany. No wonder God has rejected them.

You won’t care what color his skin is when the economy implodes and his tax increass ships more jobs overseas. It won’t matter when he takes troops from Iraq and puts them in to Afghanistan and IRAN! It won’t matter when you will have to pay a carbon tax for breating, and are taxed per each kid you have, or get fined if your garbage can is overfilled for the week like they already do in Britan. It won’t matter when you are ordered to be put on psychotropic drugs against your will because they interviewed your kids at school and they said you get “mad” some times. People don’t even know the hell they have unleashed for themselves. And the poopr and the minorities who can’t defend themselves from the hand of the state will get the worst of it. This country wll self destruct in four years. And you WILL vote for the other party in the next two years to stop one party government/dictatorship. Remember the Democrats had power for the last two years, they didn’t stop Bush once. Now they will rubber stsmp everything Obama wants, and remember you asked for it all. The President is irrelivant, but having undivided government will fiscally destroy what’s left of this country. You will see.

Though I didn’t vote for Obama, I see it as a good day for America. It is now obvious that ALL Americans have the same opportunities. White, Black, and every color in between can make it to the very top. So with that, we can now move away from the NAACP, affirmative action, and all the benefits received just because your Black, RIGHT? A Black president is perfectly fine with me, just don’t screw it up. As for the African Americans, stop whining and acting like America owes you something. As you can see, the opportunity is there for EVERYONE!

I am a female 24-year-old white voter voting for the second time, and according to earlier comments, it would be easy to deduce to whom my vote went: Obama.
I did not vote for him because I am a young, ignorant life-neophyte whose brain is so crammed full of idealism that I wouldn’t recognize reality if it spat on my shoes.
I voted for him because I genuinely believe, without a shadow of doubt in my mind, that he has the mindset closest to my own of the two candidates, and the mindset and beliefs to make positive change in this country for the people who comprise the largest socio-economic demographic within: the little “nobodies” that our government seems to so effortlessly overlook.
Race played into my decision absolutely zero. I would hope that, was there a candidate identical to Obama in every way save for skin color, the outcome of this election would have been the same. I also hope that, as a young white female, I live to see a more integrated society that somehow manages to look beyond racial lines. Cheers to Obama!

Is Racism Over?!?
Category: Life
Racism isn’t over until all people do not judge a book by its cover, until all people have access to the same quality education, until all people have access to the same jobs, housing AND OPPORTUNITIES.
ONE PERSON WITH BROWN SKIN GETTING ELECTED IN AMERICA DOESN’T PUT AN END TO ALL THAT.
But it does give hope to the idea of the land of opportunity.
If you’re really interested you should check out http://www.understandingrace.org/home.html.
A couple studies at “understandingrace.org” were very interesting to me. In one study, they had people calling numbers looking for jobs, apartments, used cars, etc. People with obvious “social” accents such as blacks and latinos were not given callbacks for jobs even when they had the same credentials as whites. Same with the other calls for apartments, cars, etc. The black and latino callers had a 10% hit rate if I’m remembering correctly. (I wish I could find the exact study).
Another interesting thing was a statement which I agree with.

Bo_15: “This whole thing is based on race that is the only way he won, if it wasn’t for the color of his skin he would not have won. He has no experience in gov’t at all.”
Your argument is completely illogical. Given that a vast majority of the American electorate is still white, had Obama been white he would have undoutedly won by an even greater margin. Ditto if McCain was black, the loss would have been bigger. Actually, I doubt McCain could ever have created a viable candidacy for the GOP nomination if he were black.
Babaganoosh is correct, racism has not gone away by any means. But integration of the American Presidency will only help to speed up the acceptance and normalization of multiculturalism in our society, as has already happened, in major league sports in particular, as well as in many other aspects of our culture. That Obama was elected last night is an *outcome* of this, not a beginning, though it will surely boost the momentum.

What happened over 200 years ago, and even in the racial equality movement is in the past. It should be left there and die there. As long as it is being kept alive by bigots and racists (white, black, or otherwise), this problem won’t end. Its time we stopped being black or white or otherwise and start being Americans! One nation UNDER GOD, with liberty and justice for all!! Not just blacks or whites! Remember that Obama is not black; he’s black AND white! So lets stop this stupidity and start concentrating on whats best for our beloved America, and racism is not included! Martin Luther King would not have wanted it that way. I believe he was endeavoring to give equal rights to the black man, but I also believe that this great man was for equality for all races. Listen to his famous speech. Lets get over our pettiness and focus on the future TOGETHER. We’re certainly going to need it for the days ahead!

Post racist i dont think so, you cant claim that as long everyone says the first black president or african american all it does is promote discontent in the non-balck voteer who didnt vote for him.All they should say and that means media and regular joes out there should just call him the next president, Is that really so bad to say.

Bo_15
That shows the kind of people who voted for this guy…when they clearly had no idea what he stood for! It’s unfortunate, but we can’t make people research or learn anything about a candidate before they vote…too bad, huh? I bet those 3 people Sal spoke to thought they were really doing the country a favor by voting, but they did no such thing! I think we should have gone back to a slogan used in the last election “Don’t Vote,” meaning not to vote for either candidate if you knew nothing about them. I guess we’ll just have to hold Obama to all his promises now that people like that voted him in.

Posted by: Chelsea | November 5, 2008, 10:01 am 10:01 am

I voted for Obama, not because of his race, but because he was the best person for the job. I’m glad that other Americans felt the same way.
One barrier to improving race relations has been the idea that all whites are inherently racist. My hope is that we can now move beyond that now and just be Americans.

Posted by: Cindy | November 5, 2008, 10:06 am 10:06 am

I made my choice based on whose proposed policies I felt would be best for our nation. I pray the majority of Americans did the same.
By the way, President-elect Obama is neither black nor white. So GET OVER IT!

Posted by: Ally | November 5, 2008, 10:08 am 10:08 am

Its not a matter of Obama being black, the question is, is he qualified to be our president (black or white). His extreme liberalism is not good for the integrity of America. I don’t believe for one minute that what he stands for, he would want to be imposed on his own family. Thats hypocritical. I love this country and want it to prosper for all men. Obama is not God, so don’t treat him that way. I am concerned for America because of his extreme ideas. He should also stop bashing the Christian community and the bible. We’re eventually going to see what this man is really all about and we’re going to need the grace of God to endure it. Change? Better believe it; but its not the kind of change we’re hoping for. Time will tell the truth.

Racism has long been gone in America, and now we have conclusive proof, but hey what’s up with 96%black voting for a black candidate. Gasp! Well as least blatant and rampant Sexism is alive and well in America! Notice Obama didn’t mention women in his speech when he talked about equality for people- oops – probably just an oversight…

I’m a 76 year-old, educated white Jewish woman, and no, I don’t live in Florida. I proudly and hopefully voted early for Obama because throughout his entire campaign his message dealt with the present and the future for ALL Americans. I could care less what the color of his skin is; I could care less that his name is “foreign”; I could care less what his religious faith is.
He hasn’t promised us the moon, with a fence around it tied in our backyard; he hasn’t sugar-coated the fact that it will take the efforts of all of us to overcome and climb out of the abyss in which our economy has tumbled, dragging down the economies of the rest of the world; nor will it be easy or happen overnight to restore America’s status in the world or to make significant and lasting progress in the War on Terror. It’s belt-tightening time, people, time to put our petty differences, our prejudices aside, and unite behind President-elect Obama for the good of our country, for the good of all Americans.

Posted by: nanameow | November 5, 2008, 10:31 am 10:31 am

It’s not racism that keeps people subjugated in this country….It’s “classism” based on the amount of money you have. Most americans can’t imagine what it is like to receive millions of dollars a year income. Obama does, and if the people who voted for him think he cares about them… they need to wake up.

All these republicans posting these ignorant posts can’t you see this is why your candidate loss. Do you really think it is okay to insult the intelligence of minorities, college students, liberals as you call them. People voted for Barack Obama because he spoke to the issues they care about and McCain didn’t. To the person who said all the african americans he knows said they voted for Barack because he is black you my friend are lying. African Americans voted for Barack because he conveyed hope, and promise for the future of all americans. He cares about education, and health care for children, working hard and taking care of his family. Keeping us out of war and working for peace around the world. His campaing was inclusive and welcomed all people not matter what their race or sexual orientation was. This is why African Americans voted for Obama believe me if a candidate was preseneted on the other side of those issues we wouldn’t have cast our votes for him….Obama Baby!!!!!!!!!

…”Racism is alive and well”.
First and foremost you should understand the meaning of what it means to be a racist. All people can be prejudice, but everyone is not in the position to be a racist. You can say whatever you want about 90+ of Black Americans voting for Obama, but those 90+ of Blacks haven’t had a choice in who they voted for, since they were afforded the right to vote. Black people had no choice but to vote for the White candidate. Obama could have been green and he still would have won the election, because he was the best candidate! See black people didn’t vote for Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton when they made a run at the presidency years ago, so speak with some intelligence. You wouldn’t be complaining if Obama were white and history has proven that Blacks have always supported the Democratic party and would have voted for him regardless of his race! How do you think Bill Clinton got in the white house!

Posted by: Roger | November 5, 2008, 10:49 am 10:49 am

guice99 is it fair that in over 200 years blacks have not been able to vote for a candidate of their own race for president?

Think it through –Your post did not reply to MY question….Obama is not full Black or African American or whatever we are suppose to say now. I saw earlier post getting confused. Maybe it’s the layout of this section. I was just stating that he isn’t full blooded black man. As someone said, there’s half white in there too!! If we are starting fresh let’s get it right…he’s not our first Black President. He’s our first bi-racial, multi-cultural or whatever. That has nothing to do with racism. It has to do with the facts which everyone wants “right”. Be careful replying to posts….In reality I agree with the post: It took a half white to make the black race proud. Obama touted his WHITE grandmother over and over and over for who he is. He should also be “honoring” his White side of the family if they were so awesome to raise the man he says he is. Right?

Posted by: Kathy | November 5, 2008, 11:26 am 11:26 am

NOTE: if Obama is neither Black or White as someone stated why are they touting him as the First Black President and not just the President Elect? The media and some peoples issue, not mine. I’m just asking. Not racist, unless it’s someone else against his White Grandma……

Posted by: Kathy | November 5, 2008, 12:00 pm 12:00 pm

Just to be clear, the majority of the black vote goes Democratic. There is a small minority of blacks that vote Republican. The black vote was as it has always been. Most blacks vote the party of JFK and LBJ. If you had taken the time to do any research you would know this. So as George stated race did not play a major part in this race except maybe for you and your ilk.

I am an aging white guy, who just spent two days at an Obama headquarters in predominantly African-American neighborhood manning the phone bank with a borrowed cell phone. I HATE cell phones, and thank God for the younger African-Americans at the headquarters who had the patience of Job and helped me time and time again manage that blankety-blank contraption.
I went through this “agony” for a number of reasons. First of all I was moved by a report prepared by the AFL-CIO which pointed out that thousands of working people died in work-related accidents each year. Each of those workers was somebody’s loved one – and, with stats like that, race doesn’t really matter very much. In addition, I had to ask myself what sort of country I wanted to live and and what sort of country I wanted to pass down to the next generation. Albeit I’m an aging white guy, McCain and Palin’s campaign of hatred, bigotry, and intolerance terrified me. I had to do my part to save America from bigotry and ignorance.
Obama’s did NOT win this election. America won. America the BEAUTIFUL prevailed over America, the toxic waste dump. An America of courage, hope, faith and tolerance prevailed over bitory, hatred, fear and intolerance.
We still have intolerance in this country. NOTE the hate, lie, and smear campaign certain religious fanatics launched against homosexuals. But Obama’s -no – America’s victory over hatred and fear marks a giant step forward to the America that we love and cherish.

Wouldn’t it be more appropriate to label him the country’s first biracial president?
Congratulation’s Barack! The U.S. and the world will now be a better place!

I just want to say that as a christian democrat living in a deeply red state, I am so tired of being told I’m going to hell because of the way I cast my vote. How did this happen in America. To hate people simply because they disagree with you is to have no idea what it is to be American or Christian. It smacks of Mccarthyism, or puritinism and witch hunts. Is this the way to win souls for Christ? You will not change hearts with hatred and condemnation. Where is the love? Read the red letters. The way the christian right so freely casts damnation, condemnation, and hatred upon people leads me to think that they’re following a false god rather than Jesus. It seems you’ve made a false idol out of the GOP.

First biracial, Arab, African-American, a first-generation American, citizenship in three nations – US, Kenya, Indonesia, Muslim-Christian, born out of wedlock to a teenage mother – how’s that for the Guiness book of records. If that’s not proof that anyone can get anywhere in America – I don’t know what proof folks need.

98% of blacks voting for Obama is not racism! 43 white gentlemen have had the honor of serving as Commander in Chief of this nation, but never before has a black man even had a chance to run a viable race for this office. I applaud the black community for coming out in record numbers to finally send their voice to Washington. Let’s face it, you may be white and racist, but no black, yellow, red, purple or green man can make any more mistakes than the old white man club we’ve been clinging to, as American citizens, for 232 years. We are in financial distress and the rest of the world hates us. We need this change! By the way, if you want to post a comment riduculing Obama, please check your spelling. Such an educated man should not be ridiculed by the uneducated and uninformed of our nation.

Posted by: jane | November 5, 2008, 1:59 pm 1:59 pm

“Wouldn’t it be more appropriate to label him the country’s first biracial president?”
The problem that arises is that “race” is an outmoded concept, long since abandoned by serious social scientists. People don’t split up neatly into racial groups; instead, things like skin color transition gradually between geographical regions, a phenomenon referred to as phenotypical clines.
As such, the only validity that “race” retains is as a social construct. A multiracial person can self-identify solely with any of his or her component ethnicities, and if they are accepted as such by the group in question, they are for all purposes a member of that group. If you claim to be black, and the black community accepts you as black, then you’re black — even if your ancestors were Australian aboriginies and you have a more distant genetic link to Africa than white Europeans.
Obama’s appeal across all ethnic/cultural demographics was such that had he been born white, or for that matter purple with yellow polka-dots, he still would have won handily (and taken 90%+ of the black vote). The election was won both on the strength of ideas and on a strong emotive context of hope and renewal, which was clearly more resonant with voters than the politics of fear.
Those who find the black vote “racist” are relieving themselves into a strong headwind and wondering where the rain came from.

70% of blacks in this country can’t read or write and do not have a clue about government or its workings. The only thing they know is to look for a free check in the mail. I doubt MLK’s ” I have a dream” speech will ever be realized for these folks even under an OBAMA administration because they don’t have enough education to keep capitalism and democracy alive. Black folk committ more murders, robberies, abortions, bastard children, and create single moms than anyother sect in America. That is the legacy their rule will leave us in America for generations to come. We are all in for a real suprise in America.

Yukon Sam (?) If it’s your post, I believe if Obama had run as a White Man the Blacks would have had a field day ridiculing him!! That’s choosing what’s convenient when you want. I’m not against Obama. Just the media blitz of a Black President. Those who voted for him did it for him as a man, not his skin color so why are they making it that way now? That’s MY issue or question. I have many friends not only black but of different cultures with mixed race children. I am agreeing that he is just a man, so why all the hoopla over a Black Man getting President. BTW-thanks all for listening and the respectful comments and rapport. God Bless America!! May this truly be a new beginning for all of us, despite our beliefs!

“why all the hoopla over a Black Man getting President.”
It seems as though for most younger voters, it honestly isn’t that big a deal. They don’t have any personal connection to a time when people were hated, beaten, and murdered simply for laying claim to their natural rights as human beings and as citizens of the United States of America.
The attitudes still persist… just scroll up a few posts to see raw ignorance and hatred on display. But the bigots and racists have no teeth. They are irrelevant throwbacks fading into history. Their time is past and their rage is impotent.
It is a big deal to people of my generation. But perhaps the most promising sign of America’s future is the fact that it is no big deal to the young.

To the greatest majority of black voters who say they voted for Obama because he is a Democrat and that is where black support has always gone, you are lying to everyone including yourself. There has never before, in the history of this country, been this many black votes for any candidate, democrat or otherwise. Why is it noble for a black voter to vote for a black candidate, simply because he black, but racist for a white voter to vote for a white candidate because he is white?
This country has a long was to go before it is truly UNITED. The Jesse Jackson’s and Al Sharpton’s are NEVER going to let that happen. They will be out of a job, such as it is.

I have been blessed to live in a community where black hasn’t been an issue. (is is changing as communities grow closer together). I was in Brownies and Girl Scouts with about a 50/50 mix of black and white, including my leaders. It was the time of MLK. My heart goes out to ALL who have been beaten down and suppressed. I just think the White side of Obama’s family should also be “honored” and he should do that. If he had ran as White I’m sure things would have been different in the vote for a multitude of reasons. I am American Indian heritage. But I am also brown eyed and blonde. But if I ran under “American Indian” for a specific purpose I’d be shut down in a heart beat. The President has a lot of power, but not all. It took more than President Bush and the Republicans to get in this mess. And the same goes for getting out of it and how the next administration runs. I’m not denying the overwhelming results of the election. I just want honesty from the start from our Bi-Racial President Elect. (and my black and bi-racial friends feel the same—mixed is mixed). If the AA didn’t like Obama they would have been all over this. Again, I was blessed with a great community and friendships and mentors of blacks (called “colored” then). I wish the rest of the world could have grown up how I did. I still say God Bless America and have high hopes. I still think Obama is dishonoring his Grandmother by proclaiming to be (all) Black. (If she were of any other nationality I would feel the same, his mother and grandparents just happened to be white) I would still consider him Bi-Racial. His other nationality would just change. George, you reading these? How about some input?

I’m an African-American that happened to vote for John McCain. However, I’m totally offended at those who say it’s racism when a black person votes for a black candiate. I thought this was a free country and that you could vote for whom ever you want for whatever reason.
And why is is that when a White celebrity endorses a White candidate that’s okay. But all heck breaks loose when a Black celebrity endorses a Black candidate? Someone needs to explain this to me!!

My comment is directed to the message posted below. PBS,CNN,and FOX news produced two seperate documentary stories on both John McCain and Barack Obama. In these stories, they detail both of their lives including several interviews about his days at Havard as the Harvard Review President. These interviews are comprised of many conservative and liberal students who worked with him and acknowledged him as a man who would meet anyone in the middle. Why does this scare you so badly?
As far as other comments regarding race. Yes it is wrong for African Americans to vote for him soley because he was African American. But I’d also like to point out that this man is bi-racial. He is half white and half African American. This means so much more to me than him being the first African American president. As a southenor with several friends with bi-racial children, do you have any clue what these kids go through? Do you know what this means for them? Why can’t we talk about that???
No one should have voted with racial motivation. Thats being ignorant.. no matter the color of your skin. But, as a white female living in the heart of the Bible belt, I voted for him because of what he wanted to do with this country. I voted for him because for the first time in my young adult life, I felt like someone cared. Spare us your petty racial and liberal comments. He’s president…deal with it. If you don’t like it…please leave. You’ve been damaging this country for far too long.

The reason that SOME whites, not all, are mad that he won is because for years we hear everything is our fault when it comes to the problems in the black race. We are tired of listening to it. The minorities drop out of school more than the whites. Dropping out leads to poverty. Why do they drop out? Because there is no man in the house as head of the family calling the shots. The black men need to stay with their women and children. The majority of divorced and single parents have lower incomes. There is too much burden on the black woman to work and raise the children, ensuring the get to school and stay there. It is up to the black men to do something about this. Also, please do something about the raunchy crap that is spewed to black men and women like what we see on MTV. It is bad enough we have our own problems (Britney, Paris, etc.) but the blacks sexualize their women moreso. This needs to stop also. Please do something about this from within your own race.

I vote for the people best equipped for the job. Individually and collectively as a team, that was the Obama/Biden ticket, no question about it in my mind.
The icing on the cake here is that the QB of this team is an African-American and one of modest means (read: not a Kennedy, Bush, McCain, etc. family dynasty of money, connections, power and influence). A man who made his own way on his smarts, hard work and even-handedness.
I marvel at how far we as Americans have come in my lifetime as evidenced by this election. The other side of my brain, however, wonders “why did it take so long?”

EC….how many notable blacks endorsed McCain? How many notable whites endorsed Obama?

Great, no more reverse racisim. Does this mean the end of quotes and affirmative action?

If this wasn’t a racist vote, why didn’t the blacks come out in droves for John Kerry, Al Gore. I don’t remember lines that stretched miles then.

Posted by: Diane | November 6, 2008, 2:42 pm 2:42 pm

Well said “D”. All the blacks are talking about the HOPE they feel, but the 10% of the population will still commit 90% of the violent crime. Nothing will change and blacks will find some way to blame the whites for their failures.

Interesting how race wasn’t an issue, yet the same articles states that it was for 20% of voters.. and that Obama won the racist vote. Interesting how close 20% comes to matching the non-white vote too. Post-racial America? I think not.

Posted by: howwouldiknow | November 6, 2008, 2:51 pm 2:51 pm

The fact of the matter is that Obama would NOT have won if he was white. He was elected because he is a black man. This election was based solely on race.

Posted by: LJ | November 6, 2008, 2:56 pm 2:56 pm

i’m tired of hearing that 97% of african americans voted for Obama because he is black.
95% of african americans have tended to vote democratic in the past 2 or 3 elections.
And the last exit poll i saw said 17% of ALL voters took race into consideration (that means BOTH ways). now lets all shut up and start working to get out of this economic slump.

I just remembered on Good Morning America they were interviewing a white man (don’t remember his job) and a black professor from Columbia. They were talking about race affecting the election. Robin said to the black professor, “Wouldn’t also be racism if blacks voted for Obama just because he is black”. The black professor answered, “No, it would be racial pride” See….not racism, racial pride. :)

I am just trying to make a point that the black men are doing their race an injustice by leaving the black women to run the household and raise the kids. This is what they need to understand because they are digging themselves into a deeper hole. This cycle needs to stop. There isn’t anything more that we can do as white people to help with that, I don’t think. I don’t see how Obama can help that. What I like about Obama is that he sets an example about staying with his wife and children. Let’s face it..it’s not easy sticking with someone for years but the blacks need to improve on this for their children’s and society’s sake.

Since there are so many Europeans and Asians expressing their sheer joy with the USA election, maybe they should ante up cash and a spine and help the USA police the world. We are tired and broke!

I see people on this board talking about they hope God doesn’t turn his back on our country after Obama destroys it. To those people I say this, WHERE IN THE HELL HAVE YOU BEEN FOR THE LAST 8 YEARS? Forget about the fact that George Bush & the GOP has made our country the laughingstock of the world with what they’ve ALREADY done, but yet Obama is the worst thing walking & he’s not even in office yet. It’s hard to imagine that Obama could do worse than where we are right now. And to the people who insist we leave race out of this, YOU CAN’T LEAVE RACE OUT OF IT!! To suggest that black people should suppress their excitement about having a President of color after 232 years & everything that has gone on & continues to go on in this country is absurd. Some whites don’t want race to come up because that’s the one issue that cannot be spun & made into something that it’s not. It is what it is, the worst, most cruel & disgusting chapter in American history. Sorry you’re sick of hearing about it, but are you sick that it even happened? It’s not like all whites did to blacks was turn their noses up at us, that would be easy to forget, but we all know it was much worse than that. Amazing how some white people expect black people to all of a sudden trust the group of people who treated them the worst to now be fair & equal, that we’ve gone from race being the major factor in everything to race not being a factor at all in this short span of time. Come on now. Barack Obama becoming President doesn’t mean race is not an issue in this country anymore. It represents progress, it’s the fruition of a dream, the answer to many a prayer. But as we can see on this board, a lot of internal feelings about race are becoming external. Certain events can cause that you know. When a minority gets a job or a promotion over a white person, covert racist tendencies tend to become overt. When a minority moves in next door. Or when a minority has as nice or a nicer home or car than the white person. WHEN A BLACK MAN BECOMES PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES! Black & white people both thought they’d never see a black president for the exact same reason, because white people would never allow it. But obviously the reaction is quite different. Blacks are pleasantly surprised that whites would actually vote for a black man. A lot of whites are disgusted & disappointed that whites would vote for a black man. And now it’s racist for black people to vote for a black candidate because he’s black, but it’s just fine for white people to vote for a white candidate because he’s white. Not only is it OK, it’s been accepted practice for years. Blacks may be guilty of this in this election, but whites have been guilty of it for decades. I guess when Hillary Clinton said that the blue collar, hard working white people of West Virginia would vote for her instead of Obama, that wasn’t playing the race card, right? These are some funny rules we play by in this country when it comes to race.

Diane,
Why did the number of african american voters only increase by 2%? The fact of the matter is that a LOT of new voters came out. A good WHITE friend of mine came out to the polls for the first time ever (and he is 30). Why dont we all start bad-mouthing all the white people that only voted because they think that obama is a muslim terrorist. The ignorance of voters on both party sides weights out.

Posted by: Matt from NJ | November 6, 2008, 3:26 pm 3:26 pm

Will Obama’s election mean an end of the disastrous fact that 70% of black children are born to single mothers which is a leading cause of poverty, drug abuse, and other anti-social behaviors. Will it mean an end to the fact that 1 in 3 black males between the ages of 20 and 29 are involved in the criminal justice system on any given day of the year? Will it mean an end to the fact that blacks are 7 times more likely to commit violent crime than whites?

“Years ago my dad told me that we always need to get behind the new President, regardless of who we vote for. He told me that after Election Day, we all go back to being Americans first and party loyalists second.” Quote from T. Boone Pickens, 11/5/2008.
I’m a Canadian citizen living in the U.S. as a legal resident, so I’m neutral in U.S. elections, although I study both candidates positions thoroughly before each election. I do this so that I can be well informed when discussing presidential politics with friends, neighbors, business associates, etc. And also, of course, because whomever Americans pick to be their president affects all of us.
From what I see and hear, the majority of negative comments about Obama show a shocking lack of knowledge and understanding of his point of view and potential policies. It seems that many people gained opinions about Obama from his competitor in the presidential race. Negative campaigning has a long history in the U.S. But notice that when John McCain conceded, he said he will support his president.
Obama has stated that he plans to find some way to work with John McCain, going forward. And he plans to have Republicans in his cabinet. In my book, this makes him open-minded and willing to find the best solutions for the whole country, not just for those who voted for him.

A Post-Racial America won’t need to point out or discuss beyond passing observation the race of Presidential candidates. A Post-Racial America won’t see a same-race vote of 95% for any given candidate.

Posted by: Tyler | November 6, 2008, 3:55 pm 3:55 pm

“posr-racial America”? Nope…not yet…the reason Obama won was because just about everybody and their Mom was sick and tired of the republican policies, and would have voted in Goofy, if he were the only alternative to McCain/Palin…word to your mutha…

WOW!! I have learned a lot here. I very rarely post so this is interesting. I didn’t like ANY of the celebrities telling me their choices. I think all ways it’s unfair because there are people who are too easily persuaded. As someone stated, unfortunately there are too many bi-racial children and what they have to deal with. My ONLY comment on RACE is that I think Obama is doing his Grandparents, particularly his Grandmother who he adored and credited with so much, a disservice only call himself a black man and for others to call him our First Black President. I am NOT afraid of him or change. I’m coming from a background of honoring my full heritage. Obama has only chosen to refer to his Grandmother as a mentor, not her race, which I don’t think is fair to HER. Think of what she and her family went through to raise him. Politics and “racism” or whatever aside, I just think his White Family deserves a lot of credit also. (or if she was of any other race than black.) I am hopeful for the country. I cannot quote all the beliefs and politics of this country. Just as a mother and someone associated with other multi-racial families, it is a blend. I think if Obama wants to bring us all together, he has to admit to also being part white. My comments are from the heart, not my politics.

I see Todd is spitting statistics. You talk as if white people don’t commit crimes. When was the last time you pulled up some statistics on some white people? I’ll be the first to admit that black men need to stand up & be counted, but you talk as if no black men are at home & leading their families. I know a lot of them, how about you? And to Tyler, it’s a lot easier to have a 95% same race vote when that race represents only 12-13% of the population. White people make up 70-75% of the population. Even if whites voted at a 80% same race clip, no candidate of color would stand a chance.

Posted by: Dee Tee Gee | November 6, 2008, 4:28 pm 4:28 pm

It is sickening to think that with all this talk, blacks couldn’t do anything until Tuesday. It is disgusting.
Blacks have had and do have positions of power for a very long time now.
If you want to end racism, end it already. I don’t see a black man, I see a man.
You want racism to end, end affirmative action. Don’t require hiring quotas. You have to keep yourself down when holding someone else down. Stand up and end these things that sour people.

Posted by: Terex | November 6, 2008, 6:17 pm 6:17 pm

If almost 95% of black voters voted for Obama, sounds like racism is alive and well.

Posted by: centurion666 | November 6, 2008, 8:00 pm 8:00 pm

I am confused; Mr. Obama is half white, correct? So why not call him multi-racial instead of black? I voted for him based on the man, not “race”.

Posted by: Sally | November 6, 2008, 8:01 pm 8:01 pm

DTG….Black men have to stand up and be responsible fathers in the home with the mothers of their children as BILL COSBY has pointed out. Black are 7 times more likely to commit violent crimes than are whites according to Dept. of Justice figures. Of all interracial violent crimes for every one a white perpetrates against a black – blacks perpetrate 9 against whites….facts don’t lie.

Why is the Press referring to Obama as “A Black President” instead of “A President”?
This offends me.
It shows how the press is racist.
It reminds me of the police when they describe an Afro-American male. It is always, “A Black Male”. The guy could be a 7 foot tall male or a short 3 foot tall male, but the police would still describe the male as a “Black Male”. The police would always use race as the first and primary adjective to describe Afro-American Males. This has offended me for years.
Now the American Press is doing the same. They are exploiting the fact that Obama sin is dark. Just listen to the news and count how many times the press referrers to Obama as “A Black President”.
Does the American Press think that by exploiting the fact that Obama has dark skin, they can get a larger audience making their ratings go up?
What next? Will white business start selling kids lunch boxes with Obama’s picture on them?
Just how much money is going to be made by exploiting the fact that Obama has dark skin and who is going to be making all that money?
To me, our President should be just that, “Our President” and not be continuously described by his/her gender, race, religion, color of her/his skin or any other descriptive adjective.
This just shows how unprofessional and racist our American Press really is.
Neither Obama nor McCain has mentioned the race issue during this campaign. It has and still is the American Press who has turned this campaign into a racist issue. I’m sure the American Press will still continue to make this campaign and Obama’s Presidency a Race issue because they want news and if their isn’t any news to report, they will make some news so they will have something to report.
The U. S. Constitution grants “Freedom of the Press”, which allows the American Press to criticize our government but does it’s citizens have a right to criticize it’s Press? Apparently ABC doesn’t think we have a right to be able to criticize the American Press.

OH GOODIE….. The sun is shining brighter, the birds are singing happier, it is now going to be forever spring.. the world is going to be a much better place…. WHY??? … Because a black man was voted president, without ANY racial bias…(except for the fact that 96% of blacks voted for him) HA-HA… What a joke!!!

Posted by: STAN | November 7, 2008, 12:40 pm 12:40 pm

As a black man, I never voted for Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton. I voted for Bill Clinton and Obama, because of their intellect and ability to lead the country. Can we move forward now? The last 43 Presidents were not Black….Stop the hatred and wake up America!

why now should Obama be called biracial when for a life time it’s been said and told if a man, woman or child with a drop of black blood in them is consided black, now because a black man has become Pres. Has that changed, now that he’s your Pres he should be called biracial, niether should matter he is a Man Black or White
all Americans need to come together and save it.

Who(? is it like the “they” no one really knows who they are?)said if there is only a drop of black blood they are black? Then I’m the Queen of England!! I pray for Obama and our country. But I’m already being bombarded with “Savior, Prince” etc. He is NOT the second coming!! And this week on George’s show they showed his White Grandma a tribute from Obama. CLAIM her Obama!! I’m not afraid of Blacks. Or Statistics. I’m afraid of so many people thinking he is going to “save” us. Only one person not on this earth can do that. I thought it was funny when Obama was asked what kind of dog they were going to get and after a few other statements he basically said “probably a mutt like me”. Let’s see, a mutt is a mixed breed right? The press IS biased. For those who might have been or might still be on the line about him, don’t shove him down our throats as the savior to be all and end all. He’s a man. A Bi-Racial, Good Man who is our President Elect. But given polling numbers, had he not been Bi-Racial or labeled “Black” he probably would not have been elected.
I’ll give him a chance. If the press and Obama will give us a chance and NOT call him our First Black President. I LOVE Oprah, but I think even she’s gone off the deep end as far as his election and abilities.
Either way, his White Grandparents raised him to be a fine young man. Can someone give US that? And can he admit THAT? It would be a nice start to his new administration to be honest about himself.
I have a lot of different “drops of blood” in me, if I could claim them all when it served me for good I’d have my education paid for, grants out the ying yang etc. but I am for all purposes considered a “Caucasian”. But I have black friends and Bi-Racial Friends and Family. I’m not prejudice. Just wanting honesty.

This election was all about race!! Our own black mayor here in Savannah said in the paper that he was voting for Obama because he was a black man. George Stephanopolis must be smokin’ dope.
