Obama Apologizes to Nancy Reagan For ‘Séance’ Crack
Earlier today at his press conference, President-elect Barack Obama was asked by Lynn Sweet of the Chicago Sun-Times if he’d spoken to "any living ex-presidents" to get ready for his new job.
"In terms of speaking to former presidents, I have spoken to all of them that are living," Obama said. "Obviously, President Clinton."
Some in the audience of reporters started laughing at the fact that Mr. Obama had felt the need to say he spoken to the presidents "that are living."
"I didn’t want to get into a Nancy Reagan thing about, you know, doing any séances," Obama explained — before adding that he’d "reread some of Lincoln’s writings," and, "President Carter, President Bush Senior, as well as the current president have all been very gracious and offered to provide any help that they can in this transition process."
Obama obviously felt that he needed to say sorry to the widowed former first lady, who’s recuperating from breaking her pelvis.
“President-elect Barack Obama called Nancy Reagan today to apologize for the careless and off-handed remark he made during today’s press conference," said Obama transition team spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter. "The president-elect expressed his admiration and affection for Mrs. Reagan that so many Americans share and they had a warm conversation."
Incidentally, Nancy Reagan never held a séance at the White House, though she was reported to have consulted with an astrologer when planning her husband’s schedules. It was Mary Todd Lincoln who regularly held séances.
When she was first lady, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., worked with spiritual adviser Jean Houston to access an "Eleanor Roosevelt-like consciousness" from within her own psyche. Clinton wrote in a column that Roosevelt "usually responds by telling me to buck up, or at least to grow skin as thick as a rhinoceros."

Why do we have to apologize for everything? It was meant to be funny, not cruel. Nancy lived with Ronnie for how many years? I’m sure she can take a joke.

In the scheme of political insensitivities, this was way minor. Good thing he called to apologize, but he is human and he does have opinions on things like using mediums. Thank goodness.
Posted by: SeekTruth | November 7, 2008, 8:01 pm 8:01 pm
Very thoughtful of him to call Mrs. Reagan though I don’t think there was anything wrong or disrespectful in what he said. He was clearly just making an off-handed joke based on the oddness of the question asking if he had spoken to any “living” ex-Presidents (are there any other kind he could have spoken to?). Obviously, he mushed together some different stories (Nancy Reagan’s astrology sessions, Mary Todd Lincoln’s seances, Hillary’s “chats” with Eleanor Roosevelt…) but who among us hasn’t done something like that?
Nice of him to reach out and apologize to Mrs. Reagan, though (although I’m sure took no offense).

This just goes to show you that Obama is not the saint that most people think he is. Not all of the words that come out of his mouth are words of wisdom. I also wonder how African Americans feel about him calling himself a mutt? That didn’t seem like the wisest thing to say either! I do respect him for being big enough to call Mrs. Reagan and apologizing, though. Most people wouldn’t have done that!
Posted by: carlyonsue | November 7, 2008, 8:13 pm 8:13 pm
Obama did make a gaffe and he realized it. He actually likes Nancy Reagan alot. She likes him too. And he called her. Know he meant it as is this statement is not his approach. All done.

Very minor gaffe, very swift correction. This guy’s batting 1.000! No, we shouldn’t have to apologize for every perceived offense, no matter how minor…but there’s also nothing wrong stepping up quickly to show a little extra class either. Seems weird to hear a POTUS quickly admit a potential mistake doesn’t it? It’s been awhile.

Intresting that all of you are so willing to overlook and make excuse for Obama and telling people to get over it, when a very differant approach has been taken with President Bush when he mispeaks. There always seeems to be a lot of name calling and demeaning of the President. Maybe a double standard here?

He made two mistakes. One was that he insulted Nancy Reagan and the other was calling himself a mutt. He should not belittle himself or anyone else like that in public. It shows weakness and that he may be self-conscious. It does show how inexperienced he is, which does not sooth the masses.

He did fine even with the “seance” gaffe. For a first presidential-elect press conference, he did a good job. He was presidential yet casual, and he’ll get to be a better off-the-cuff speaker. They all do. Well, sadly, Bush never did.
By next time, he’ll have enough of a staff to get a statement underway and written before the conference is scheduled so the event can start on time and so they can get him on a TelePrompTer. He’s much more presidential and commanding when he’s looking up and out. We all are! (Speechwriter here.)

CarolynSue- Why would African Americans be upset with him calling himself a mutt? You imply that it is his African American blood that makes him a “mutt,” but I think that he is simply referring to his mixed heritage. You seem to think that he is tainted by black blood.
Couldn’t the same question be asked of what white people think? I guess not, because that would go against the theory of white superiority.

Posted by: spacerook1 | November 7, 2008, 9:24 pm 9:24 pm
Right wingers on here have already begun carping over two jokes. Had they had any sense of priorities . .. perhaps the following wouldn’t have happened. . .
Here’s how the Republicans ran the government.
REPUBLICAN GOVERNMENT
$421 Billion OVER BUDGET (2002)
$555 Billion OVER BUDGET (2003)
$596 Billion OVER BUDGET (2004)
$554 Billion OVER BUDGET (2005)
$574 Billion OVER BUDGET (2006)
This includes RECORD overspending.
And the Republicans had the nerve during the election to try to label the Democrats as “overspenders of your hard earned tax dollars”.
Is it any wonder they drove both the public spending and finances into the ditch?

Nancy Reagan was a wonderful First Lady and to make such a silly comment was not appropriate.
He also called himself a MUTT.
What was that all about?
The rest of the world is listening and it did not sound good to refer to himself as a MUTT..
The talk show hosts will be all over that one…
Posted by: SF | November 7, 2008, 9:32 pm 9:32 pm
The MSM is reporting in a few circles, who is Obama, we really do not know him, his policy, worldviews, and he is an enigma.
Well they had 2 years to investigate him and they did not do there jobs, but in 2 years they could not find the following
Obama ran on the New Party ticket for his first senate run. A very left party that was either socialist or so damn close it was scary. Their platform was and is based on socialist views.
Obama committed major ethics violations as a state senator. He accepted speaking fees during this time. Illinois Ethics laws forbids a senator to accept any fees for speaking. The sad part, Obama declared these fees on his PUBLIC tax returns. Anyone could have looked this up with very little effort.
Issues that are coming out after the election, Fairness doctrine, theft of 401k plans. This information was reported on blogs all over the US. Why was it buried until after the election by the MSM?
Obama’s 2001 Chicago radio talk, Supreme Court judges do not need to interpret the constitution. They should judge cases on social and economic issues. The civil rights era did not do enough in redistributive rights for the black man. It should have covered these issues at that time. Since Obama does not believe the courts will do anything about it, he wants to get it passed through legislation.
Why does Obama want his own civilian defense force 250,000 strong, equal to or greater than the US Military? While reducing military funding by 20 to 30 percent.
Well people wanted change; they bought Obama and his rhetoric hook, line and sinker. He made you feel warm and fuzzy for change, talked a good talk, and never did outline one thing he has done or will do to make things better. Just nice talk, middle of the road, bring the nation together
He picked a hatchet man for his Chief of Staff, he will go far left.

The Democratic Congress’s 2008 Budget: A Tax and Spending Spree
In January, a Democratic congressional majority was sworn in that was elected in part by promising fiscal responsibility. The Democrats specifically pledged to limit spending increases and employ pay-as-you-go (PAYGO) budgeting to keep the budget deficit in check.
As their first year moves toward a close, it has become clear that the members of this majority have failed to live up to their promises. In just 10 months, Congress has passed legislation that would increase federal spending by a combined $454 billion over 10 years and raise taxes and fees by $98 billion over 10 years and has passed a budget resolution that would bring the tax increase to a projected $2.7 trillion.[1]
Despite the Democrats’ PAYGO pledge of no new deficit spending, legislation enacted thus far has increased spending much faster than taxes, resulting in an additional $356 billion in deficit spending. Only their budget blueprint, which assumes repeal of nearly all of the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts, would pay for all of their new spending
Posted by: John | November 7, 2008, 9:37 pm 9:37 pm
Despite relative silence with respect to taxes on the campaign trail, the Democratic congressional majority quickly enacted a budget resolution calling for one of the largest tax increases in history. Under current tax rates, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) projects $14.107 trillion in tax revenue between 2008 and 2012. Yet the congressional budget resolution calls for collecting $14.828 trillion– an increase of $721 billion.

John you’re absolutely right.
After 6 straight years of Republicans setting RECORDS for overspending, the gross overspending continued.
Did you expect a miracle? Get real.

Real Presidential.. making a joke about a sick old lady because HE said something stupid….. Yeah a man to be proud of…. NOT
Posted by: MediaTalkingPoints | November 7, 2008, 9:41 pm 9:41 pm
Thus, the Democratic congressional majority has shown its hand. It intends to allow most of the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts to expire and plans to raise other taxes to balance the AMT fix. Over the next 10 years, the budget resolution would raise taxes by an estimated $2.7 trillion–more than $2,000 per household annually.[6]
Lest any Senator try to avert these tax increases, the budget contains a multitude of new rules designed to ensure that they occur. Any Senator offering legislation to extend current tax rates would violate three different Senate budget rules, each of which would have to be overridden by a supermajority of 60 votes before the Senate could even vote on the legislation itself. These obstacles would apply just to keeping current tax rates in place. By contrast, current entitlement spending formulas, which automatically raise entitlement spending by 6 percent to 7 percent annually, would continue without any restraints.

House Democrats have also passed legislation that would raise taxes and fees by $98 billion over 10 years. These may even be on top of the tax hikes in the budget resolution. Specifically, the bills would:
Raise the federal cigarette tax from $0.45 to $1.05 per pack,
Raise taxes on U.S. subsidiaries of foreign companies by $7.5 billion,
Levy a new fee on domestic oil and gas production on the Outer Continental Shelf, and
Raise other energy taxes by approximately $10 billion.[7]
Other proposed tax increases would:
Raise income tax rates for many Americans by 4-5 percentage points,
Raise the federal gas tax, and
Raise taxes on private equity and hedge funds.[8]

Entitlement Spending
After years of historic deficits, this new Congress will commit itself to a higher standard: pay-as-you-go, no new deficit spending. Our new America will provide unlimited opportunity for future generations, not burden them with mountains of debt.
–Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), January 4, 2007.[9]
LIE LIE LIE
Posted by: John | November 7, 2008, 9:45 pm 9:45 pm
Fact: The House has already waived its PAYGO rules, and Congress has voted to increase entitlement spending by $179 billion. Offset by the $98 billion in tax increases, these policies would increase the budget deficit by nearly $81 billion.

seriously? when, just say ONE time when the guy “demonized” (my gosh are people bitter these days) that woman, who, let’s be honest, is stupid as stupid gets. Barack never ONCE referred to her negatively in personal terms, and barely even did it about “her policies” (not very to account for, btw). He DEFENDED her and her family even when she later went on to incite the masses to “kill him” and say he was a “terrorist”. Get a grip len, you’re done, over with, time for you and all your fellow McCain supporters to show you put “country first”.

You are right on the money about the media. No pun intended. The media that help elect him will now turn on him for the almighty dollar. They will call it investigative journalism. As you said, they should have done this before the election so the American people would have had an honest picture of who he is. My heart bleeds for him. and you are totally right about the leftys and their manipulations of the facts to suit their purpose. God help us all!!

Here’s how the Republicans ran the government.
REPUBLICAN GOVERNMENT
$421 Billion OVER BUDGET (2002)
$555 Billion OVER BUDGET (2003)
$596 Billion OVER BUDGET (2004)
$554 Billion OVER BUDGET (2005)
$574 Billion OVER BUDGET (2006)
This includes RECORD overspending.
Where did the Republicans think this money was going to come from? The moon? From 7/11 and Macdonalds workers?

Discretionary Spending
If you want to have a new program, figure out a way to pay for it without raising taxes.
–Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), November 12, 2006.[20]
Fact: In addition to the tax and entitlement increases, Congress’s budget increases discretionary spending by 9.4 percent. Over 10 years, this translates into $275 billion more discretionary spending than under President Bush’s budget request without offsetting even one dollar.

Pork-Barrel Projects
We will bring transparency and openness to the budget process and to the use of earmarks, and we will give the American people the leadership they deserve.
–Speaker of the House-elect Nancy Pelosi, December 11, 2007.[22]
Tough [expletive].
–Representative John Murtha (D-PA) to reporters who noted that he had scrambled the earmark data in the Defense appropriations bill, violating the spirit of openness and transparency that the Democrats had pledged.[23]
Posted by: John | November 7, 2008, 9:58 pm 9:58 pm
Fact: The Democratic congressional majority has exempted authorization, entitlement, and tax bills from earmark reforms, substantially watered down other reforms, and brazenly sought to conceal all earmarks in this year’s spending bills. The House and Senate appropriations bills currently contain 11,351 such projects.
In addition to fiscal restraint, the Democratic majority pledged to rein in the use of pork-barrel projects, which had skyrocketed under the Republican majority and had prompted numerous criminal investigations of congressional corruption.

First, congressional Democrats pledged to clean up the earmark process. While the ethics bill signed by President Bush contained some reforms, such as required disclosure of the congressional sponsors of each earmark, lawmakers significantly weakened the rest of bill by:
Removing a provision to ban the trading of pork-barrel projects for votes,
Weakening provisions aimed at stopping earmarks that financially benefit lawmakers,
Transferring Senate earmark enforcement powers from the neutral Senate parliamentarian to the partisan Senate Majority Leader,
Permitting votes onbills before disclosing earmarks, and
Weakening a provision requiring that earmarks be listed on the Internet before congressional votes.[24]

Two other events stand out. Following the collapse of the I-35W bridge in Minneapolis, Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK) offered an amendment calling on the Senate to place a temporary moratorium on transportation earmarks until all structurally deficient bridges are repaired. Amazingly, the Senate voted 82-14 to prioritize pork-barrel projects over bridge repairs in the transportation budget.[29]
Then the Department of Veterans affairs proposed selling $4 billion of valuable but vacant land in West Los Angeles. This $4 billion could have been used to provide additional medical care for America’s veterans. However, this land is also surrounded by the Beverly Hills estates of wealthy individuals, including Sylvester Stallone, Tom Cruise, Tim McGraw, and Barry Bonds. Reportedly, when locals complained that, among other things, this development would impede the views from their mansions, Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) inserted a provision to cancel the land sale. The Senate voted 66-25 to side with the Beverly Hills millionaires.[30]

by fighting the fairness doctrine,
by ensuring the ACORN investigations proceed
by ensuring that haters who bomb police stations are treated to the same investigations decades laters as haters who bomb churches
by working to ensure the comprehensive immigration act goes front and center
by ensuring internet business startups pay the same taxes as any other business including ensuring they collect information for taxes lost to states that would otherwise tax them
And by ensuring the next election is run on a level playing field with regards to private contributions.

The one who said that the economic crisis was “mental” (that’s when I pulled my daughter’s college savings out of the market) and the guy who was John McCain’s economic advsior? (McCain, who said that the economy was “fundamentaly sound”). Gramm wrote and bullied the two pieces of deregulation through congress, (1999 and the 2000 credit swap measure) – making sure that $71 trillion on Wall Street was completely unregulated. Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae pale in comparison. Phil Gramm – a close friend of both McCain and Bush. Warren Buffett called them Weapons of Financial Mass Destruction. And George Bush was the one who crammed a $700 corporate bailout package down the throat of Congress. The real Republicans must be rolling in their graves.

Or do you think EIGHT YEARS of a Republican admiistration, which put us trillions of dollars into debt – to China – no less – to build an Iran-like Sharia goverment in Iraq – might have had something to do with that? Along with Republican deregulation – and a complete lack of responsibility on the part of the President?

You don’t start a war unless you are
going to win it.
Bush didn’t and doesn’t know how to get
us out. Your President was a failure.
No Bin Laden so be afraid he is going

Your President did not do a thing to

Let face the facts Bush is a total
mess…

If taxes aren’t raised, how the heck are we gonna pay off the trillions of dollars in Iraq War debt and the $700,000 billion bailout.
Nothing is free. Country First – remember. We gotta do what we gotta do.
Stop whining.

Shelley, Genocide is deliberate and willful annihilation of a people. Saddam certainly did that with the Kurds. What do you call what we did with the Sunnis in Iraq? There are at least two million Sunni refugees who have fled Iraq to Jordan since the surge began. The ones who are left are easy to recognize. They are unarmed Iraqis – an ethnic minority. Is that not genocide?

Hey John,
How about you paying my half of the
bailout and my half of the war.
I did not vote for Bush so why should
I have to pay for his messes.
Please pay my half. You seem so
willing to do so for your President.
Posted by: sammy | November 7, 2008, 10:51 pm 10:51 pm
I found it quite an improvement to have the President Elect make a foolish remark and then call up the person and apologize for his behavior. That is quite a change from Bush who never admitted that he made a mistake in eight years. If something went wrong, it was always someone else’s fault.
Posted by: MikeMo1947 | November 7, 2008, 10:52 pm 10:52 pm
It’s rather difficult to “think positive” when you’re aware of little things like truth squads using police, Kids4Obama, Stop Smoking For Obama, Obama’s Civilian National Security Force, and the various “volunteer” groups He’s developing.
Look past His appearance, and into His eyes. There is no humility there.
Bush nearly destroyed this country. And he has time to do so much more damage. But I don’t see that Obama is any less arrogant and self-aggrandising.
So I’ll just let the bandwagon pass me on by, avoid the Kumbaya Karaoke, hope His “I know what’s best for you” laws don’t strip away what personal rights I have left after Bush, and watch the tides turn against Him.

John: you keep missing the essential question . ..
If it was so important to regulate the mortgage and loan industries – and if the Republicans were so committed to it – why didn’t the Republicans do it when they had control of the White House, the Congress and the Senate for SIX YEARS?

Hey Keith,
Now you are getting smart.
Why do you want to police the world
and tell them how to live and how
to behave. If we keep this up we will
be in so many wars it won’t be funny.
War is the last option the very last
option. Bush just rushed in and that
was that. He does not know how to think
or react. He reminds me of a puppet
on a string. You tell him something and
he believes it. Then when he reacts to
it he doesn’t know how to fix it.
He should have never been President of
the United States.
You can not go around and tell other
country how to live and police them
into believing our way of life.
If we as Americans are in real danger
then we must step in to defend her.
But excuse me for eight years please
tell me where your Bin Laden is??
What are we doing in Iraq??
Oh I forgot paying trillions of dollars
and our troops having to stay there
until your President figures out what
to do with them. He is their Commander
and Chief for Heaven’s sake what the
you know what was he thinking.

John – .” Are you saying that when the republicans controlled both the House and Senate and when President Bush did not veto a bill for five and a half years, it was the democrats that should be blamed. But I thought you were blaming the democrats for the last two years when they were in control. So which is it? Is the party in power responsible for what happens or the minority party responsible for what happens?

I’m going to love it when everyone
against Obama starts to live a great
life in the USA. Your dislike for him
will come back to bite you.
But like all Republicans you will still
find everything wrong even when your life
is really good.
I would have been the first one as
a Democrat to say Way to go Bush and
Republicans had Bush done right by us
and our troops. Let us all face the
truth that he was terrible and get on
with life and look toward the future
with a promise of things getting better.
You will have a good life with Obama.
Look at the Clinton years.
Think positive it will happen.
If we stay negative it will only
depress and make us not want to fight
for our country and bring it back to
the way we were before eight years ago.

I don’t know if Obama is going to be a good president or not. I thought I would wait until he has been in office for a few months before I make my initial judgment. However, from reading some of the strong statements on here, it is obvious that God has been giving them inside information since they are so certain about the outcome of his presidency before Obama takes office.
Posted by: MikeMo1947 | November 7, 2008, 11:22 pm 11:22 pm
He said that he had spoken to the only living president – Clinton? He wasn’t aware that Clinton is not the only living president and that wasn’t splashed across headlines? He’s handled with kid gloves by the media.

It is so sad that the media creates these issues, when no doubt Nancy Reagan had no idea that any comment had been made, let alone take the comment personally. Borack is simply making an attempt to be a personable, open, forthright president elect, and of course the media will force him into a defensive reclusive position (much like they do to any celebrity) to the point in which the general public will lose it’s newfound feeling of inclusion and hope. Furthermore, Mr. Tapper did a fantastic job in his post conference talk with Charlie Gibson of spinning President Elect Obama’s answers to sound like nothing new was stated (which it was) and furthermore that he will enforce tax hikes on 250k+ incomers. (In which he did NOT confirm). Sounds like Mr Tapper must be one of those individuals :). Can’t we all just be happy that we finally have the beginnings of an administration that is willing to work towards something? One other note I’d like to make. In every video clip of Mr. Obama going in and out of the meetings since his election, he has actually had a bag of (what I would assume is) items that one would actually need in meetings when one is actually -=working=-. I can’t remember the last time I saw a bag like this in President Bushes hands :).
Posted by: Dale | November 7, 2008, 11:32 pm 11:32 pm
Sarah – Obama did not say that “he had spoken to the only living president.” He said “he had spoke to all the living presidents.” Obama is human and going to make dumb statements like we all do, but you don’t have to make them up and then say he is being treated with kid gloves.
Posted by: MikeMo1947 | November 7, 2008, 11:40 pm 11:40 pm
He was asked if he had talked to “any living ex-presidents”. . .
Looks to me like this phrasing with ‘living’ ex-presidents brought to mind the presence of the ‘non-living’ presidents and the thought of communicating with them.
I’m almost sure(since Obama is a serious student of history) his mind would quickly go through how great it would be to consult with them. And ‘communicating with dead presidents’ and the White House came to mind and what Nancy Reagan and what came out was an attempt at a joke.
I think he looked a bit tired . .. and who wouldn’t be! So he was tired – and this showed his humor – but probably not at it’s best.
He saw fit to phone her. That’s the right response I think.

I was amused by the comment and like his sense of humor. Imagine, if you will, that Obama was a republican and said this. The press would villify him. Imagine if he made a stupid comment (aka misspelling potato) about Clinton being the only living president and he (Obama) was a republican!! Truly, misspeaking in public is amusing for us, but the press crucifies any republican that does it and ignores when their people do the same. Interesting. I will support and pray for Obama.

Mara, I’m certainly not saying that war is justified. I’m saying that we live in a world that will never be perfect because there will always be a few that dream of domination. I would love to think that we as Americans could keep our noses out of other countries, but can we? We are, whether we like it or not, the country that other countries look to for protection. I can’t imagine turning a blind eye to people that are being thrown into wood chippers or being slaughtered because they don’t want to be dominated by a maniacal dictator. War is a horrible thing, going on since the beginning of time. Were we right in fighting Adolf Hitler? Look at what he was able to accomplish in a relatively short period of time. If I remember correctly, Neville Chamberlain, the British Prime Minister sat and had talks with the Germans and told the British people that they could sleep soundly. He had good intentions but the Germans did not.

I am still hoping I am wrong, and that he really is a decent person, since he is after all, the president-elect. Let’s stop w/the bashing people (this not being one of them, just a stupid joke)… he needs to seriously rise above all criticism and not keep poking.

I am someone who voted for someone other than Obama, simply because his views and policies are too liberal for me. However, I am extremely proud of America this week, for she elected the first man of color to be our American President Elect. Whether you agree with the politician or not, I hope all of us can rise to a place of honoring this moment in time; this long awaited moment……and honor our new American President by giving him a chance. By denying the urge to seek out reasons to hate him. By denying the urge to feel like you didn’t vote for him so you don’t have to accept him as your president. I want him to do well. That means I will do well. We as Americans will do well. If he makes decisions that fundamentally go against our principles and wisdom for our nation, we need to communicate that at the ballot box, through the media and other forms of peaceful, non-destructive communications . I want to continue to live in a great America, which means the responsibility of that starts right here with me. I need to create bridges and lesson divisions so that I might experience common, though often complex, relationships with other Americans. The rudeness of Bush-bashers did nothing to create better days for our country’s citizens. McCain and Palin bashers keep that same “Bush-hatred” stream flowing as it contaminates. I’m weary of all this. I’ve seen people do an “in your face” to someone who did not vote for Obama. That’s ugly human behavior. I’m weary of all the Obama lies being distributed via email. I didn’t vote for Obama, but it is not okay to lie about him. Where does all of this end? Human behavior and human choice is at the center of this. And it is key to guiding us to a more tolerant, respectful existence. We’re all Americans. Let’s do this together, let’s get behind President Bush as he finishes up his turn at the most stressful, most honorable job on the planet. And then let’s get behind President Elect Obama to heal our hurts…..economical, healthcare, war-weariness. We’ve each got a role to play, and however we choose to play it will have a ripple effect. My personal actions today are creating a kind of America…….what kind, though? I hope better for all of us. Let’s all do this together as one America, folks. We can have our differences and still honor and respect each other. Best case scenario.

Dear Concerned Though Hopeful,
You got it right! I am an African American male and I helped put president Bush in office both times. This time I gave president elect Obama a chance. This is one of the many things I love about this country which is the freedom to express my opinion at the ballot booth. Whoever you are, “Concerned”, we might have different opinions but we have mutual respect and this shows very much so in your obvious love for our country and it’s ideals. With a few more folks out there like you this country will make it through adverse times.

I am shocked by the “newly minted” Jake Tappers inability to cover this press conference. What was ABC thinking? After “listening” to an hour long press conference, when asked by Charlie, all he could come up with was that Mr. President Elect had not made any new commitments except the tax increase on tax payers making more than 250k and the discussion of the kind of dog the Obama Family planned to get. What?? Obviously Jake Tapper was too consumed in his thoughts about the tax increases or the fact that his candidate lost the election to pay attention and report what was actually said. As George Stephanopoulos so eloquently explained President Elect Obama made a lot of commitments on the economy and said as much as he could say being that he is not the president until January 20th. (which Obama said himself as well.) Oh but somehow the comment about Nancy Reagan managed to make its way into Jake Tappers overwhelmed little mind and he chose to only report on that. Please! Mr. Obama was not being mean spirited, he made a joke, I seriously doubt anyone got their feelings hurt, especially since he and Nancy have great admiration for each other. Same for the mutt crack, should he apologize for that too? Why didn’t Bush have to apologize for all the words he massacred over the course of the last 8 years – I was offended by that! Maybe Bush owes us all a phone call to personally apologize for the state of the economy and the wars our sons and daughters have been fighting. This is the dawn of a new age and Jake Tapper had better wake up and support our president. Honestly, did either of his reports accuratly convey what was actually said in the press conference today? NO. If this is the best he can do being the white house correspondent he needs to be replaced he did not inform anyone on what actually happened today. He is simply trying to spin whatever he can to make Obama look bad and thats not his job! We are not interested in that – we want to know the facts – what was said of importance. Oh, and kudos to Mr. Obama for consulting with past presidents – maybe if Bush had actually consulted with anyone with ANY knowledge we wouldn’t be in this mess now. Thats the fundamental difference between our new president and the old one – informed decisions – Thank God. Mr.President Elect, don’t let them convince you to loose your sense of humor, we like you just fine the way you are I look forward to more of you press conferences. :)

Accept these years as a challenge for all of us including Obama who as a human as you and makes mistakes just like you and I. I have a funny feeling those “57 States” t-shirts are going to be a hot seller. That is not to say President Bush has had more than his share of malaprops (oy-vey!) but it’s starting to look like “Obama unplugged” (as in no teleprompter) is going to be an adventure.
Buckle up, folks. The next four years is going to be one crazy trip!
And everyone was worried about Sarah Palin. HAH!

Every last one of you are so disappointing to me…. Stop bickering about this. Our country made history this week. Doesn’t anyone realize that? We have a chance to lift ourselves up, make our country better for our selves and future generations. Earn our respect back and our reputation for being one of the best countries in the world. How many of you have taken the time to find out how people in other mainstream countries actually think of us? Of our policies, of our war, of our president, of our EGOS? Really, look it up, travel outside of the US and speak to the locals – their opinion is not all that good of us. Do you ever wonder why?? For the love of God you all need to grow up! Why are you such sore losers? It is no wonder other nations have little respect for us, we are so 50 years ago. Listen to your selves, like a bunch of children. I am starting to wonder if we will be ok with the likes of you all arguing and causing conflict. At what point are you going to choose to be positive and look towards the future? Support our country and our president? Like it or not he is our president.
If you are not part of the solution you are the problem.
Why am I the only one concerned with the fact that the white house correspondent did not actually report on the press conference today?
Oh, and I think all the shelter dogs will be just fine even though Obama made a comment about mutts, there are some mutt breeds that are hypo allergenic and could be found in a shelter. And if there is not one currently in a shelter there are rescue programs that rescue pure bread dogs from shelters to adopt to new loving homes for a fee that is again used to rescue and adopt out many more dogs. The simple fact that Obama brought up adopting a shelter dog shows he is socially responsible enough to adopt a dog from a shelter or a rescue program. Furthermore as a member of PETA, and my local animal shelter, I took no offense to his comment and you need to chill. Just looking for something to complain about!

Obama’s charismatic, good looking, and a smooth talker. He’s still a shallow bastage, and he and his pals WILL make things worse. Whatever, I kind of like conflict, makes things interesting. You think things can’t get worse? Just watch. When the government gets involved, pushing statist economic policy, be prepared for hyperinflation.

I thought messiahs were omnipotent! And they said Bush was dumb. My own daughter said “It can’t be any worse than the last eight years!”.

What a horrible thing to say, especially from someone who just recently lost an important person in his own life. Make a joke about Reagan: no problem. Make a joke about Reagan’s death: not good form. Make a joke about Reagan’s death in relation to his wife: very, very bad. But, he will be given a pass and by Monday nobody will remember except those already labeled as hateful and racist.

What a joke that everyone is acting so uppity about such a remark. It is a reference to history. Even though it is more of a reference to cultural history it was an active rumor and a very intelligent joke. If he and Nancy had a warm conversation she propably laughed about it she is tough as nails not wimpering because someone tried to get a point across that they had talked to every possible reference to become the best president ellect. This takes me back to the verse about he who is free of sin casting the first sin. No one is perfect so I see a bunch of hippocritical comments here. I don’t think of the joke as a mistake I think of it as underdeveloped. It was funny too bad he didn’t word it better so that Nancy fans wouldn’t get their panties so wadded.

I think a tired Obama was simply trying to make a spur-of-the-moment joke in response to the crowd’s laughter at his remark about his consulting “living” ex-presidents; if he hadn’t mentioned Mrs. Reagan in connection with “seances” no one would care (and it would still have been a funny joke). Not only was Obama’s wisecrack inconsiderate (Nancy Reagan is in the hospital and an elderly woman), but it was just plain wrong. As this article mentions, Nancy Reagan never held any seances (Hillary did). So here’s the point: can you imagine what the media would be saying if Sarah Palin had made a comparable wisecrack? The editorials would say that she’s “low class”, “trash”, “insensitive”, “bimbo”, “a disaster”, etc. Sooner or later, even the sycophantic press will have to concede this guy is not what they thought he was, and deliberately portrayed him as.

What history? All I keep hearing is this country made history. He is white-kenyan. Do people not know that his father was not born here, nor was he a citizen. His mother was white. >>>Funny, you Republicans are always touting Freedom of Speech and now you want to tell him who he is allowed to talk about and how.<<< Actually, Obama is the one exhibiting this trait. Fox News was the ONLY major news organization at his press conference yesterday that Obama would not take a question from. Obama kicked reporters off his campaign plane whose organizations had endorsed McCain. And TV stations twice received the cold shoulder – no further interviews – because their reporters asked questions the Obama campaign didn't like. A "free press" is fine with Obama as long as they kiss his annointed rear. This is how a Ministry of Truth gets its start, no doubt.

The Reagan remark about “bombing Russia in five minutes” was made under an expectation of privacy (Reagan thought the mike was off when he said that to a colleague standing nearby), not as part of his first press conference when he knew millions would be hanging on every word. Slightly different circumstances. I’d say.

Posted by: seemstome | November 8, 2008, 8:12 am 8:12 am
I don’t know if this portends anything about how he will govern, but it does give us a glimpse into his personality – which had been carefully choreographed and masked during the campaign. He’s a bit of a Chicago street wiseguy. I’m sure the mask will go back on now and he’ll return to his scripted campaign mode – at least for awhile – because Obama’s smart enough to know that being a wiseguy is not good for popularity ratings. “You can fool some of the people some of the time…”
Posted by: Son of Rodin | November 8, 2008, 8:17 am 8:17 am
>>>All the waste in a year from a nuclear power plant can be stored under a desk.<<< Actually, it probably would fit under a desk – the volume of plutonium needed to power a nuclear reactor is rather small. Reagan wasn't saying that the waste SHOULD BE stored under a desk, of course.

I knew as soon as I heard him make the unfortunate remark, he would be apologizing to her quickly. That’s one way he is much different than George W. Bush. Bush never admitted mistakes, large or small. I hope Obama doesn’t make many mistakes, but when he does make a mistake, I expect him to be the kind of person who admits its and tries to rectify it as soon as he knows he’s done it. That’s one quality of a real leader.

Nope, sorry, not gonna happen. No one gets a break, remember? Someone says it, they’ll be held accountable for it. Isn’t that how this works?
I seemed he was running through a list in his mind of which presidents are still living – I think many did that when the question was asked. When he drew a blank at one point he felt the need to throw in a cruel & unfair comment about Mrs. Reagan.

Hey, so Barack Obama isn’t a natural born comedian? So, what … that isn’t why he was elected. Like many others, he should be careful with his attempts at levity and I believe he is the intelligent type that will recognize and eschew repeating a gaffe like that. He is smart enough to have contacted Nancy, at risk of being rebuffed, and apologized. She apparently accepted. After all, she must have remembered her husband having a slip or two. This does not even compare to the “never-seeming-to-learn” President we have endured for the past eight. It’s over. Get over it.

A suggestion for everyone (including myself), turn off your computer and go out and do something that will make our country better. I am shocked by a lot of the commentary posted here. Whether you like it or not, MR. OBAMA IS THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES! Just as I told friends who were fanatically upset when Mr. Bush won his first and second term, HE IS OUR PRESIDENT! The pettiness over a gaffe (Hell! I’ll even give Sarah Palin a pass about Africa), the comments that he is arrogant only because he speaks well and looks great in a suit (great rearing Grandma!), only speaks to your own ignorance and prejudices. Sit back and read your own comments and think about why you are actually so negative of an official who has yet to take office and actually do anything. What is that anger about?

Wendy, at least he actually does apologize when he realizes he made a mistake. It’s not weak to so do. It’s humane. Bush evidentially never wanted to admit to a mistake. He was of the mind, ‘if I ignore it, it will go away’. And sisterdearest – why hate at all? It’s ok to be angry with Bush, but the ills of the economy are not entirely HIS fault. It’s all of us.

How about “mutt like me”. I am sure if a Republican or worse a white person compares Obama to a mutt, cries of “racism” will be deafenning.
Anyway, “mutt” now, what’s next? “Zebra” like in The Jeffersons?

Obama needs to learn the names of all the Sacred Cows and to refrain from speaking about them except for praise.
Ronald Reagan, John Kennedy, Martin Luther King, POW John McCain to name a few. Nancy Reagan is one of those cows
that few dare mention. The last living vestige of the Reagan Myth is off limits.
Posted by: seemstome | Nov 8, 2008 6:53:24 AM
In case you haven’t been watching the TV this week, or haven’t seen a newspaper, the most scared of cows was elected this week. The way the media descibed things, because of Barack Obama’s ascendancy, America can be proud of itself, the world now loves us, and we have finally arrived at a post-racial society.
While in recent years humorists and comedians have always enjoyed good laughs at the expense of whomever is in the White House, I have a sneaking suspicion there be a mostly hands-off attitude towards Obama. Simply put, he could make enough gaffes to put even Joe Biden to shame and he’ll get off relatively unscathed by the humor-mill.
During this past campaign late night comedians poked fun at John McCain (one of your so called “sacred cows”) over Obama by some ridiculous margin. Part of that may have had to do with the ideology of the shows’ writers, but the other part of the equation is a hyper-sensitivity to not wanting to be accused of racism. One can poke fun at the intelligence of W. and not have to worry about some white southern males interpreting this comedic jab to be bigotry. But if somebody was to take a swipe at Obama’s intelligence then accusations of racism will surely come your way from the racial huscksters who would show everyone they never went away.
If this is a truly post-racial society, then lets see the comdeians unleash on Obama like they did on W, (and to an extent on Bill Clinton). If a black man can be poked fun at just like a white man can, then yes maybe we really have finally arrived. Lets hope so.

He has to have all questions asked before the conference so his answers can be on a teleprompter.

to madvtr: People will ALWAYS call you paranoid and insane if you actually ask questions. Then they spin it out to ridiculous conclusions (digging holes, indeed). That’s the pressure that they use to try to make you shut up.
For the record, I AM a mutt. I call myself a mutt at work, when I’ve had enough of people being separated into what race they are, who their parents are, what church they go to, and what they should hold as truth based on all the above.
My work, seven days a week, is to help those lacking support get health care and find emotional and social support. And I fight for each one of them, no matter what race, when the system wants to reject them based on value judgments. So accusations of “being part of the problem” are laughable.
All of my pets over the last twenty years have been rescues.
I didn’t vote for Bush, either time.
I’m not leaving the country. I’m also not going to simply sit down and shut up. Even knowing that speaking out has a price.
And, as a cynic, I truly believe that humans are capable of wonderful things, yet know that they will not accomplish them. There is too much pressure to conform and obey, and too much apathy, or just plain weariness.
There will be no unity as long as people are categorized. And we will always categorize, and use labels to say, “I’m right, you’re wrong.”
Ex: “sore loser, Republican (as an insult), insane.”
Extremism, fascist or socialist, is bad for a country.

First press conference out, the economy in the tank, and President Um-bama decides to take a pot shot at a 90 year old first lady. Classy. Doesn’t he have better things to talk about? Why did he have to say he spoke with living Presidents? Isn’t that implied, that if you are speaking to someone, that they are LIVING?
I um spoke um with um Clinton (counts on fingers…can’t think of any others…)

It was just a joke folks – and Nancy is fine with it. Let’s explain it: Obama couldn’t communicate with Ronald Reagan since he is dead; Nancy used to consult astrology when making important decisions; so Obama “stretched” the astrology thing by saying she could conduct a seance so he could consult with Ronald. That’s it – pure and simple. Can’t we ever kid about anything anymore????
Posted by: luvnrockets | November 8, 2008, 11:32 am 11:32 am
Gee, this is really a HUGE mistake? For heaven’s sake, even the Reagans joked about Nancy’s love for astrology. When Bush misspoke, it was about WMDs and “Mission Accomplished.” And did he ever apologize? Obama makes one joke about Nancy Reagan, apologizes, and the name-calling begins. Meanwhile, during the campaign, you have Sarah Palin out there saying all kinds of offensive things about her opponents and detractors, and who does the apologizing for her? John McCain.
Posted by: briwil2 | November 8, 2008, 11:32 am 11:32 am

Well, Obama is pretty good at picking on little old ladies. After all, he called his own granny a “typical white person”. Why would he show any more respect to Nancy Reagan? She’s Republican anyway; may as well throw her under the bus.

He’s just as capable of making dumb remarks as any other president. Take a look at our last president. He’s dumber than a rock. And take a look at the Italian Prime Minister who yesterday made a crack about Obama being “tanned”. They’re all upset at him there, and he’s refusing to apologize. Talk about classless.
Posted by: Raphael | November 8, 2008, 12:12 pm 12:12 pm
Making the arguement that he’s just as dumb as our other President’s doesn’t cut it. Just accept that the guy tried to be funny and was offensive instead. He needs words written in front of him to read. This is why the LA Times tape might’ve been enlightening as to who the REAL Obama is.
Some of the postings here are more cruel than what Obama said. Let’s unify as you say you want and stop making fun of a great man like Reagan.
Posted by: zeke | November 8, 2008, 12:56 pm 12:56 pm
You know something folks? If we just keep sniping back and forth for the next 4 years don’t complain when nothing gets done. Act like Americans and get behind the guy who won. The single worst thing that I have seen go wrong in the US in the last 20 years is that we (most of us) have allowed the media to foment hate and divisiveness. Are we going to show them that they can’t do that anymore or are we too gutless to do that? Remember one thing if nothing else, we ARE the UNITED States of America. We’ll all get things done that way. Enough already, roll up your sleeves and be part of the solution and if you want to be a sniper join the military.

I found his remark about Nancy Reagan offensive simply because I respect our elderly. I worked with the elderly for a number of years and recently had to care for my 80+ year old mother. I find it repugnant to make mean natured remarks about the frail elderly. They deserve our respect and care, not sarcasm.

The Random House Dictionary of the English Langugae defines “muut” as follows: mutt (mut), n. Slang. 1. a dog, esp. a mongrel. 2. a stupid person. [short for MUTTON-HEAD].
Being known as thoughtful and careful speaker, President-elect Obama unfortunately chose an incendiary word when he answered a reporter’s question about selecting a dog for his White House. Less than 72 hours after his election, his choice of word “mutt” is a very poor one since it neither reduce the racial tension nor lighten up the nation’s gloomy mood over the economy.

Jake got the punctuation wrong – watch the video. Obama actually said:
“In terms of speaking to former presidents, I have spoken to all of them. That are living.”
After the first sentence, he realized he had just implied to talked to ALL of them, living and dead. So he wanted to clarify that without seeming too pedantic. I thought it was funny, and I respect Nancy Reagan very much.

That is REALLY reaching. I mean, seriously, you want so badly to have dirt on him so you pull that one out?
Almost everyone I know who has mixed blood refers to themselves as a mutt. Did you just now crawl out from a rock?
Just the other day I called myself a mutt because someone asked me if I was Russian. I replied, “No, I’m a mutt like everyone else…norwegian, german, and scottish.”
He did not turn to me and say “wow, you’re a dirty mongrel???”
No, he said “Yeah, I’m a mutt too” and proceeded to tell me his heritage.
Its slang for “mixed blood” EVERYONE knows that…

What happened to the brilliant, inspiring, illustrious Obama of the campaign trail? He sounded like a first year speech student, stumbling, grappling for words, with so many pauses and hesitations that he appeared almost dull of mind. All the canned speeches during the campaign were memorized and repeated over and over again, practiced [probably in front of a mirror] along with gestures and smiles, etc. First time out, we see the real Obama–trying to ad-lib and labeling himself [as a mutt] as no one else is allowed to do, in an attempt at self-deprecating humor, which fell totally flat. And he managed to insult a former first-lady who may or may not be insulted, but which was still in extremely poor taste for a president-elect. The brilliant? appeared dull. The intelligent? appeared, well, anything but. The demos will make all kinds of excuse, of course. The shining star is starting to tarnish. Who knows what’s ahead, but this man won the presidency as if it were a popularity contest in high school, not as if he were a statesman–which he is not. He is a man who has had to hide a lot about himself, and many of the things we do know about him are terrible, especially when it comes to abortion and killing babies. God help us all!

I think Obama looked a little shell shocked at the news conference. He actually won the election. The well wishers are unbelieveable so many would be a little overwhelming even for someone with his great self esteem. I thought his remarks were for a moment self effacing. He walked into a room, and everrrrrryone stood up. Even his enemies stood up. He won the election, and with it all that goes with it. There is a great weight on his shoulders now, and he has no time to grieve his loss, Obama will be fine, and a great president.

Glad he apologized, that showed class.
What ticks me off is that in all the press coverage nobody mentioned it.
It makes me think a little of Emperor’s New Clothes, huh??
Because the ONE I guess is still in Chris Matthews words someone the press will “do everything I can to make this thing work, this new presidency work”
If Joe Biden, the court jester had said it, Jake would add it to his wonderful list of gaffes. But Jake was so enamored of his question on Iran, which like someone has said here was good question but sloppy answer. Great question and Jake’s beat isn’t even foreign policy.
But on the soft sell of how Barack will enter the White House, he inexplicably chokes. On dogs, what nonsense and an interesting but unnecessary self depreciating remark. On fellow Presidents, whoo why did he go tripping on “living presidents” to the limit of a sloppy crack at Nancy and the late Ronald Reagan……

Forth, he launced an attack against an old woman who just broke her hip, like his grannie that supposedly gave a damn about that just died—- And fifth, he spent more time talking about the stupid dog than he did of anything of revalence. A lot of energy is certainly being used by you all here on deriding a tired guy whose biggest mistake was going ahead instead of cancelling with a press conference optimistically scheduled soon after a government briefing which probably ran late and was full of a lot of stuff that if the candidates knew before they got elected they might not have even run!
Give it a rest. Give him a rest!
A CEO’s take: This was meant by Obama to be just a signal: To demonstrate that he was and would be available and open, and yes, candid to the press as things move along in this transition and even into the presidency. So, yes he dresses up for the occasion, and no, he doesn’t say much–what is there to say yet?
He didn’t bring up the dog topic, but was asked pretty early on, and did state that it was the topic most asked about on his website. He then talked some about it candidly. Translation: When you, the press, have issues that you want to discuss, and they seem important to you, the press, I will talk about them, and you can ask about them, and I will respond to you. Signal: no major off-limits topics likely.
Asked about national security, he chose not to answer. Translation: I am still in charge and will not chance breaching national security. A test from the briefing guys, who may now tell him the real important stuff. Signal: I can keep my mouth shut politely when I need to and not have you “Oh, c’mon, tell us,” and wheedle it out of me.
This is the kind of thing we do in business all the time, to use gestures as a kind-of ‘body language’ demonstration.
An example: a business venture partner is flying in tomorrow for a 2-hour personal meeting to sign some papers that we all have agreed to, and could just as easily be done by mail or email. He does not have side trips or a boondoggle visit to friends, etc. This is used and understood as a sign that our ‘deal’ is being taken seriously and getting major attention by his much larger company. We shoud expect then to hold up their end of the deal.
Another kind of signal: Obama is working on setting the right and most effective tone for these for the future. This is different than campaigning, and he has not had much experience with press conferences per se. Translation: Dry run. Signal: I care about getting these right, so when there is important news it will be effectively communicated, without distractions like misspoken jokes.
Seances words: off the cuff, small memory glitch of the presidents, likely tied in with the briefings. Government documents always sound like it is happening today, even if 75 years ago. It may have seemed that all those former presidents were there in a briefing: “Truman called for…” ” Johnson is saying…” and so on. Awkward joke but did not say meanly or dwell on. Also good business practice: when in doubt if you offended someone, act as if you did, and take care of it. He really should not have had to apologize for a good-natured offhand remark, but in the present climate it is refreshing that he would do so without a lot of pressure.
Consider that so many ‘mis-spokes’ were made in recent years of press conferences that there were entire websites devoted to them that were quite unpartisan.
Another business perspective: many people do not seem to know what it is about Obama that makes him different from other politicians. We do see these traits in the business world, too. They are the traits associated with extremely high intelligence. Not very many politicians in this country have this to offer. A quick study, big memory, ability to see a large view and graso a lot of information quickly, and with language abilty to articulate his thoughts. Intelligence used to be a prized trait in political figures, and still is in many other countries.
A sometime worry with a person of very great intelligence is that he/she can be undisciplined, living off their wits, so to speak, and not be a good get-it-done person. Obama’s campaign organization and steady demeanor show that the get-it-done discipline is there. I would hire him because of these traits.

About midwest biz’s comments [explanations, i. e. excuses]: Told you! Here come all the excuses. An intelligent person knows his/her limits, weaknesses and true capabilities and doesn’t try to be what he/she isn’t. In other words, obama is not superhuman. He is a man just like all others, albeit a more polished and arrogant one, but still just a man who is capable of messing up. It must be hard for all the worshippers to admit that he is fallible and that there’s nothing extraordinary about him, except that he is very slick and “talks a really good talk.”
