Obama Sends Condolences to Families of American Victims in Mumbai
President-elect Barack Obama and wife Michelle released a statement on Friday, expressing their sympathies for the American victims of the terrorist attacks in Mumbai.
"Michelle and I send our deepest condolences to the loved ones of the American citizens who lost their lives in the outrageous terrorist attacks in Mumbai," the statement said. "These terrorists who targeted innocent civilians will not defeat India’s great democracy, nor shake the will of a global coalition to defeat them. The United States must stand with India and all nations and people who are committed to destroying terrorist networks, and defeating their hate-filled ideology."
Obama once again reasserted that there is only one president and thanked the Bush administration for keeping him updated.
"There is one president at a time. I will continue to closely monitor the situation on the ground in Mumbai, and am grateful for the cooperation of the Bush Administration in keeping me and my staff updated. We fully support the Bush Administration’s efforts to protect American citizens and assist the government of India during this tragic time," Obama said.
On Thanksgiving morning, an Obama aide told ABC News, President-elect Barack Obama spoke by phone with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, receiving additional briefings on Wednesday’s Mumbai terrorist attacks, which have left more than 150 people dead and hundreds more wounded.
Additionally, said the Obama aide, the President-elect received an intelligence briefing on the attacks in the India coastal city.
Along with the updates from Rice, Obama is also getting regular situational updates from the State Department Ops Center and the National Counter Terrorism Center.
"He continues to monitor the situation closely and appreciates the cooperation and information sharing from the Administration," said the aide.
The Thanksgiving conversation marked the second time that Obama and Rice have talked since the coordinated attacks in India’s financial capital.
On Wednesday evening, Obama called Rice to get an update on the situation.
The President-elect also called Indian Ambassador Ronan Sen.
According to an Obama aide, the President-elect "conveyed that his thoughts and prayers are with those affected by this tragic situation."
"He said that there is just one president at a time. He also told him that he is monitoring the situation and has been in communication with Secretary Rice."
The Obama Transition Team also established a team to interact with the State Department Ops Center and with the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.
Amb. Wendy Sherman, an Obama Transition Team aide focused on the State Department, is part of that.
The Bush Administration has, an Obama aide said, "helpfully provided regular updates through several channels."
On Wednesday night, Obama Transition foreign policy aides Denis McDonough and Mark Lippert also briefed the President-elect, who is spending the holiday with 60 family members at his residence in Chicago.

Obama Avoids Questions on Contraception Rule
It’s good that Obama gets briefed by the State Department, but he is going too far calling the Indian ambassador. In times of crisis, it is vital that the USA speaks with one voice, and currently that voice is George W. Bush, like it or not. Obama takes over on January 20th. He needs to learn when to shut up. Inexperience showing?

Obama wouldn’t have to step up to say anything if the current administration were saying/doing something. If he didn’t come forward with a voice, America wouldn’t have one right now. Bush might as well be gone, because he is the lamest duck of all.

Seems like Keith still can’t get over Obama’s win.
When the current President has virtually quit and isn’t saying or doing much, the next one on deck should say something. If that bothers some of you because you need to see Obama “stay in his place”, I suggest you build a time machine and go back to the 1940′s so you can build some self-esteem. Or, as you loved to tell blacks and Democrats over the years, “This is America, love it or leave it!”

Excuse me, but don’t you mean the attack was BUSH’S last Challenge?
Unless you clowns don’t know it, Obama won’t be president for 2 more months.
I swear, the white wash of Bush has started and the smear of Obama is still on going, even though he hasn’t even become president yet.

At least he’s consulting with the party who knows what to do with terrorists. Otherwise he and his Clinton cabintet choices wouldn’t have a clue. Look what happened the last time a democrat was left to handle a terrorist situation. The USS Cole and 9/11, and a missed opportunity to nab Bin Laden. And where did we end up? Iraq and Afghanistan. And what did Bill Clinton do? He called in his national sexcurity advisor Lewinski in for another Oval office conference. Good thing Obama is good with the economic issues, because he hasn’t got a clue as to how to lead a military force in any way, shape, or form.
Posted by: Jerry Rogers | November 28, 2008, 3:57 am 3:57 am
Jerry Rogers,
I would have to disagree that the Republicans know how to handle the issue of terrorism.
It was supremely foolish to invade the wrong country, leave over a million of their citizens dead, and thus breeding resentment among many of the dead’s family members to join the insurgency. I would be pretty furious if some country dropped a bomb on my brother’s wedding and blew everybody to smithereens.
Isolating countries like Iran instead of attempting to engage them was also the wrong approach. Writing a cheque for US$1 (or was it ten?) billion to Pakistan without attaching stipulations that they should go after the terrorists more vigorously was also another blunder.
Oh, and Keith, Bush seems pretty absent. He’s been in hiding and has hardly said anything to attempt to reassure the nation in the financial crisis. If W isn’t going to say anything, I’d rather Obama did. Plus, I reckon the Indians (and the rest of the world for that matter) like the soon to be 44th President of the United States alot more then the incumbent.
And those of you still flogging your ridiculous argument that Obama was born in Kenya, please ask yourselves a simple question. Why on EARTH would a heavily pregnant woman travel to Kenya in the 1960s? There was quite a bit of unrest then and I doubt that there were, cheap, regular flights to Kenya.

ABOUT ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION:
The Democrats were elected to fix this economy and withdraw our troops from Iraq. They were not elected to grant amnesty to illegal aliens. We must stop the Democrats and Senator Barack Obama. We elected Senator Barack Obama and he has to do what we want: WE DO NOT WANT TO GRANT AMNESTY TO ILLEGAL ALIENS. PERIOD. WE WILL FIGHT THIS ONE. ILLEGAL ALIENS MUST NOT RECEIVE HELP FROM THE FEDS OR STATES. SENATOR BARACK OBAMA AND HIS STAFF MUST ENFORCE CURRENT IMMIGRATION LAWS. IF THEY DO NOT, NEXT ELECTIONS THEY WILL NOT WIN.

Yes, we only have one president at a time, but it seems that Bush and Obama are in total communication during the transition. At this time there are so many critical issues and President Bush has decided to keep President-Elect Obama up to date on everything. It seems to me President Bush is being most cooperative and President Elect-Obama reminds us daily that we are a nation of one President at the time. What is the problem with that? When both parties are in disagreement we complain, when both parties agree, we complain. WHAT EXACTLY DO SOME OF YOU WANT? It appears this nation is working on unity, I for one would like to see that happen.

JHW- I see you’re referring to the earlier reference to Joe Biden, who said that Obama would be tested soon internationally. In lieu of the Mumbai attacks, it was an accurate prediction. The terrorist attacks in Mumbai could clearly destabilize relations between Pakistan and India, if the funding and training for the Indian militants did indeed come from Pakistan. It’s a very tenuous situation, not likely to be resolved anytime soon. You can only speculate on the source and reasoning behind the attacks , which are still ongoing. Again, I don’t think the international repercussions from the Mumbai acts of terrorism are leaving us anytime soon.

well said. i agree, the democrats have EXACTLY what they have wanted for the last eight years. they have their liberal president, and have control of congress. possibly a filibuster proof congress if they can steal the election in minnesota as they are trying to do. so, that being said: SAVE THE WORLD. im a conservative, not the biggest fan of what the bush administration has done, or what modern day republicans have become, but here’s your chance to save the world. no more excuses, although i have a very strange feeling (because it has started already) that you will claim “the democrats cant fix all of bush’s mistakes in four years”.. lol obama hasnt even been sworn in yet, and already they are making their claim for his second term, but thats just my opinion. the nation, and the entire world, is at a very crucial time, and electing a liberal, unexperienced canidate to be the leader of the free world was simply NOT the thing to do. if you cant see the trend hat has already started with the push towards full blown socialism in this country, you simply arent paying attention. so, here you go democrats. take the progressive movement you have been pushing for 40 years and run with it. ill be expecting my stimulus check ASAP. i need a new tv, thanks.

Obama wont get much information from Connie because she’s clueless and it’s Cheney who directed Connie. Now Obama need not go to the CIA as they messed up and got the information wrong. It was reported New York subways would be bombed but it was India not NY and it was hotels not subways. With 2/3 of the CIA agents gone as they walked out over the Valerie Plame Leak we have no one to translate information. Connie is only good for speaking Russian and playing the piano as her only Govenment job as Secretary of State was to carry memo’s from Cheney and Rummy she wouldn’t know Foreign Policy if it hit her in the face. The World Leaders laugh when she comes to visit because they know she’s clueless and just the messager.

This Mumbai attack is Bush’s last test/challenge…however all incoming presidents receive some test/disaster upon taking up office. Clinton did in 1993 with the FIRST World Trade Center bombing(and then flinched in the eye of danger by not going after Bin Laden BEFORE he went into deep hiding) and of course George W. was greeted with the second attack on the World Trade Centers on 9/11. Both Bill and George had less experience as an elected official when they first took as office, than Obama will. Neither George or Bill had ANY foreign policy or national security experience. At least Obama is a member of the Senate Foreign Relations committee and has traveled extensively abroad on behalf of the U.S. and he is also a member or a chairs of Senate subcommittee that deals extensively with NATO. Matter of fact Obama has more elected official experience than Ronald Reagan had and Jimmy Carter had when they first took office. He has more than Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, Mitt Romeny and Rudy Guilliani. (yet only Obama’s experience is ever questioned).

Patty: Illegal immigration is a vital part of the farm industry. Without them there would be no one to pick the apples, oranges, tomatoes etc. These people are the hardest of hardest workers you’ll ever see and doing jobs that Americans will not do. These are people that came from desperate situations and want to make a better way of life for their children. Are you sure your ancestors were wanted in the is country? Were they really hear legally. If they came here because of the potato famine they’re illegals. Yes, something has to be done about securing our border and I wish it would be done. I think most European Americans it’s a little bit of fear of being outnumbered and the American way of life will be lost-well Americans faces have always changed and we continously evolve welcome to being multicultural. I do, however, get a little annoyed when I can’t apply for a help wanted ad and have all the necessary qualifications except for one qualification and that is speaking Spanish fluently. These ads are cropping up more and more. When amnesty is given, the illegals will be required to read, write, speak English fluently. They will be required to be fingerprinted with their picture taken prior to and after the test-less cheating. Anyone caught in falsifying the passing of the test will do serious jail time.

Oh, ProgressiveGurl, you are entertaining on this bleak, rainy morning. You actually wrote, apparently with a straight face, in your gushing praise of Obama which, like so much of the praise that appears around here, is couched in putdowns of previous presidents: “At least Obama is a member of the Senate Foreign Relations committee and has traveled extensively abroad on behalf of the U.S. and he is also a member or a chairs of Senate subcommittee that deals extensively with NATO.” Oh, heaven forfend that we elect someone who is not a member of an important Senate committee. That’s where the real foreign policy work gets done, right? That’s hilarious. And you are serious when you mention his chairming a subcommittee on NATO? You do recall that it came up in the primaries that he had never gotten around to actually holding any hearings with that subcommittee, remember? Too busy running for president– Senate was always a stepping stone and once you’ve checked the box, no need to spend too much time on the minutia. Sorry, membership on the committee does not strike me as experience superior to leading a state (as did other presidents you denigrated) or serving in the military. Travelling the world with a Senate junket? Sometimes that’s a way to develop experience, sometimes not. Depends on the individual and what s/he puts into the trips.
“Matter of fact Obama has more elected official experience than Ronald Reagan had and Jimmy Carter had when they first took office. He has more than Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, Mitt Romeny and Rudy Guilliani. (yet only Obama’s experience is ever questioned).” What on earth are you talking about? “elected official experience”? You mean he served in office somewhere at some level longer than those two men, who were both governors of large states who developed EXECUTIVE experience as a result? Funny, when people cited Palin’s long experience as a city commissioner and mayor, that experience was ridiculed. But you figure I’m supposed to get real excited about a few years in the Illinois state legislature– not in a leadership position, not in an executive capacity? Sorry, I don’t see that as some fabulous credential. Nothing wrong with it– don’t misunderstand me– just nothing great about it either. All the people you mention have developed leadership skills in a variety of ways– for example, Guiliani was a prosecutor before he was mayor; Hillary was a very involved first lady of Arkansas and the United States before she was elected Senator. So please don’t be so quick to put down these people in order to prop up Mr. Obama.
Experience can be compensated for, and he seems to be doing that with his Cabinet picks, which pleases me. It is not simply Obama’s lack of experience that gives me pause. Sometimes a fresh approach is needed– let us all hope that Obama has the right fresh approach to deal with the problems he will face effectively.

Gang, let’s be clear. Many of you are saying that Obama MUST make statements because Bush “has checked out” or “is useless” or “is just counting the days” or “has virtually quit.” That simply isn’t true. Bush is on the ball with the situation in India, as he is on the ball with the economic bailout and lots of other issues. He issues statements, he meets with advisors, he makes phone calls– just like Obama, except that it’s actually Bush’s job. He also holds national security meetings, sends assistance, and a myriad of other things, most of which we will not be told about. However, the press and the public show no interest in what he is doing– they rush to see what the Chosen One will say or do instead. Please do not assume that because you didn’t read on Mr. Tapper’s blog or see on the evening news precisely what the president is doing, that means he is not doing anything. Things actually do happen in Washington even when people are not pointing a microphone or a camera at the person who is acting.

I wonder if the founders of this great nation thought that in 200 years our educated citizens would still be taking cheap shots at the President and President-Elect after the election. I wonder if the founders thought that if we would ever face a great crisis, that instead of working together, we be whining about who to blame.
