Obama: ‘Brothers Should Pull Up Their Pants’
ABC News’ Teddy Davis Reports: In an interview with MTV, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., called local laws against sagging pants a "waste of time."
But while he does not favor legal prohibitions on low-riders, he said "brothers should pull up their pants."
"Here is my attitude," said Obama. "I think people passing a law against people wearing sagging pants is a waste of time. We should be focused on creating jobs, improving our schools, health care, dealing with the war in Iraq, and anybody, any public official, that is worrying about sagging pants probably needs to spend some time focusing on real problems out there."
"Having said that," he added, "brothers should pull up their pants. You are walking by your mother, your grandmother, your underwear is showing. What’s wrong with that? Come on. There are some issues that we face, that you don’t have to pass a law, but that doesn’t mean folks can’t have some sense and some respect for other people and, you know, some people might not want to see your underwear — I’m one of them."
Obama sat down with MTV’s Sway Calloway in Nevada on Saturday. The interview, which featured questions from viewers, was first broadcast on Monday morning and will air again at 7:00 pm ET.
Obama fielded questions on a variety of topics including Proposition 8, the California ballot measure which would eliminate the state’s recently recognized right to same-sex marriage, and whether Obama’s call for higher taxes on the rich would destroy the incentive to become financially successful.
The Democratic nominee was also asked about student loans, a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants, Internet rumors, and work policies on piercings and tattoos.

I don’t know what the expression means, yet it made me smile. I think some people are just plainly stupid but they feel good when others call them racists.

“I think people passing a law against people wearing sagging pants is a waste of time.”
Isn’t that the truth!!! But then again, look at other ‘efforts’ by the rabid right that are a complete waste of time when you look at them in the same perspective. For people who claim to be ‘Americans’, they sure do not act like it.. the intolerance screams volumes about their character and do not represent what is perhaps this countries greatest strength.

the cool thing about this obama thing whether you like him or not is not the “socialist” agenda the right is spewing..its also not whether he can say “brothers” as is mentioned above its THE FACT THAT HIM WINNING IS JJST DRIVING the right insane. the way the republicans are acting you think the sun will not rise on Nov 5th and when it does they will realize they may not get the White House back for decades if they keep acting like this..Did I really read the word racist in a blog response about an MTV interview? WOW

Even when he says something we all agree on, some people find the need to find something wrong or controversial about it.
You don’t have to find fault in everything he says or does and you don’t have to start an argument over every little thing.
So, yes, pull up your pants.

http://hotair.com/archives/2008/11/03/well-someones-a-chump/
The MTV interview had some REAL substantative information including taxes yet ABC finds that posting the ‘saggy pants’ portion to be so dang newsworthy. Why doesn’t this surprise me? Let’s supress the part where “The One” talks about a person who makes $250K a year and their tax increase is “CHUMP CHANGE”. B.O.’s definition of “CHUMP CHANGE” is $9000 a year. $9,000 a year!!! That’s nearly THREE times the amount good old Joe I’m a Gaffe Machine Biden gives to charity in a year yet ‘The One’ wants everyday Americans to pay, at minimum $9000???? Now please keep in mind I don’t make anywhere NEAR $250K a year, however I certainly don’t believe that by increasing taxes is going to solve our economic problems NOR will they cover the $1 TRILLION in NEW spending that ‘The One’ proposes to enact.
“Chump change”?? This on top of his coal industry bankruptcy talk, Rev. Wright, Father Pflaeger, William Ayers, Bernadine Dohrn, Rashid Khalidi, etc. etc. etc, and absolutely NOTHING on his political record that would even remotely show us his political beliefs other than voting “PRESENT”. I mean good grief…how can people be so incredibly blind? Nothing but lemmings, sheep, zombies…that’s all I can see in this entire political mess.
Should we have Mr. “Chump Change” as our nex President…God Save and Help Us All.

Why should we spend money on something that is just poor taste. He would call them brothers because it’s the men that are doing it. Why do some many people try to read negativity into things. Its hard to find a more revered and loved American than Andy Griffith. When I think of a true American I think of him. Andy Griffith stands for truth and wisdom, and has been considered a faithful veteran, and someone who would never support communism. Andy grew up when the world was under attack by nationalism, and then he was a part of our national fight against communism. Often during his show, The Andy Griffith Show he would teach us lessons on right and wrong, and what the true American way is. His son in the show, famed director Ron Howard is also considered an American icon, and someone you can trust to do the right thing for America. Ron and Andy have put their support behind Barack Obama for President, because they believe he represents the BEST for America. They would NEVER support someone who didnt love this country as much as they do, nor would they support someone who was a threat to us all. Lets all be like Andy Griffith and vote for Barack Obama! Lets share Andy Griffith’s dream of the America he believes in! Obama/Biden, as American as apple pie!

They had the same concerns when Obama was at Harvard.. proved to be completely unfounded, and to the dismay of the liberal writers who thought he would support simply on ideological reasons..
A good non-biased portrait of the candidates was recently and currently showing on PBS Frontline, titled “The Choice – 2008″.
An excerpt from that show:
KENNETH MACK: One of my most poignant memories of The Law Review election process was late in the process. It’s late at night. We’re trying to figure out how to resolve this thing. Clearly, Barack has a lot of support, but it’s not resolved yet. And a conservative editor who probably disagreed with just about everything that Barack stood for got up and said that he was firmly behind Barack because we were a divided institution, this was the best person to lead the institution and to reach out to all constituencies, even though he had his own political views and made them known.
———————————
And regarding his support for the liberal members?
———————————
NARRATOR: The African-American editors were ecstatic.
BRADFORD BERENSON: I think a lot of the minority editors on The Review expected him to use his discretion to the maximum extent possible to empower them.
CASSANDRA BUTTS, Harvard Law, 1991: There was an expectation on the part of his more progressive colleagues at The Law Review that he would side with them on issues.
BRADFORD BERENSON: Barack was reluctant to do that. It’s not that he was out of sympathy with their views, but his first and foremost goal, it always seemed to me, was to put out a first-rate publication. And he was not going to let politics or ideology get in the way of doing that.
NARRATOR: Only one African-American student received a top editor’s job. Federalist Society members were given three.
CHRISTINE SPURELL: The whole Federalist slate was taking over. I was kind of hoping to get a masthead position, and I did not get a masthead position. I was hurt. I think I would call it very hurt. And I told him so. I mean, certainly, he was aware of how I felt.
BRADFORD BERENSON: I think Barack took 10 times as much grief from those on the left on The Review as from those of us on the right. And the reason was, I think, there was an expectation among those editors on the left that he would affirmatively use his position to advance the cause.

The only ones I see wearing their pants like that are usually unemployed thugs, white and black, that wander around the neighborhoods either trying to sell it or score it. They dont have any self-esteem, so its a non-issue. Most self-respecting men, black and white, would be embarrassed to display themselves like that in public.
I find it funny to watch cops chase after these thugs. They have to pull their pants up like a bride does a wedding gown in order to run….fences present an even more hilarious obstacle for them.

Obama and I were meeting with a group of leaders one evening on the South Side [of Chicago]. And after these meetings, we would get together and debrief. … And after we got through with the debriefing, as we’re walking out to our cars in the parking lot, this panhandler comes up to Obama and he asks him for a dollar.
Obama then did something that I don’t think I’d ever seen anybody do, including myself. He looks at the young man, he says, “Now, young man,” he says, “You are better than that.” He said, “You’re embarrassing yourself and you’re embarrassing the community. You need to reflect on what you can do to get yourself straight.” And he walks away.
What does that show about Obama? Well one thing that it shows is tough love, otherwise known as agitation in the lingo of an organizer. You’re agitating people to be better instead of commiserating with them about their fears and their weaknesses. You’re challenging them to be better. And, you know, after I told that story, a reporter asked Obama, what did he think about this idea of agitation? Tis funny to watch those that do not co-mingle with thugs act as if they know who the thugs are. The crime-ridden area in my town is full of thugs, and they are mostly walking around with their hands functioning as a belt. I do co-mingle with some of them as I am teaching my child the way the world is at my local Boys and Girls Club. Crank That and all.

Whoever is complaining that Barack’s use of the word “brother” is racist is being absurd, and must live an excessively insular life. I realize the tacit rules for women are a little different, but we women, white & black, commonly call each other ‘sisters’. It is a colloquial term that is completely harmless, and completely appropriate in this circumstance. Everybody knows that in the cities these black kids go around with their asses showing, and I’ve never seen a white kid with their undies showing. It is basically a term of endearment within black culture, but it also transcends black culture all the time. White politician have been referring to their “sons” for eons, and we can bet they never meant their black “sons”, yet nobody ever cried racism for leaving black folks out of the dialogue. Racism? What a totally absurd assessment! Give me a break! If you really want to cry racism, why not start with analyzing the language of white politicians (mostly on the right, incidentally — just fact) for the last 200 years.

USA
I havn’t heard the civilian army proposal. He could never pull that off,
and if he or any other govt. tried, the results would be unspeakable. He is going to be in a box canyon for his first couple of years, with the economy.
Even with the Dem. congress/Senate the filabuster will gum things up for him.
This is going to be a very tight election. If he double crosses the people who really might get him elected
the races in 10 will swing fast. Remember, two years of the same, and it will basically stay the same, paints him as a Carter or Kennedy – Talk big, do nothing types. His honeymoon will have been over, and he will be swimming in a sea of enemys. The Warren Buffett types see him as being a Centerist, identical to Clinton. Do anything to stay elected. He had better be for ALL the people in every catagory, or he will go.

I am a woman and I never refer to another woman as a sister. I usually call people by their names. Occasionally, Ive heard someone call someone a sister, but it’s usually in a family setting. I spend a lot of time at the BG CLub, and they don’t call each other sister there, either. At least not that I’ve heard. They don’t call each other brother, either. Mostly, they call each other by their names.

Brothers today mean, black, white, latino, asian and jewish men. All young men of the hip hop generation tends to wear their pants low.
But since as all things hip hop, yes it started in the black community but now it is in every community.
So my brothers let not a so called lifestyle make you forget the respect for all the women to you know or will come to know. PULL UP YOUR PANTS!!!

For anyone who owns a motorcycle, we are all aware of the saying “We are all brothers under the helmet”. And that includes the women among us. And for those of us who served in the military, we are all brothers in arms. The extremists need to step back, take a deep breath, and realize that we are all in the same boat, and that boat has been rapidly sinking over the last 8 years. The last thing we need is a law that would define our dress code, even if it might have a ‘casual friday’ clause in it.

all the teens and gangsta wannabes wear their trousers low. my father says it was also done back in the 40s and late 50s. it’s not just black teens but all of them who are not in schools requiring uniforms. fad, just a fad. it too will end and pass.

The brothers that are in my neighborhood who have the pants down are the ones who are on welfare. Why should they pull their pants up? While for the first time ever I have to agree with BO, these are people who are “entitlement” people. They won’t go work because they know that the government will pay them to stay out of the work place, to stay home and lead immoral lives. For each child that is born out of wedlock, you receive more governmental money. This is the redistribution that will continue and to only get worse. There are no poor people in the United States any longer. You may find a few that are in some backwoods, who are not accounted for, but the welfare people are some of the richest people I know. So BO, thanks for telling your fellow man that we no longer want to see their underwear, but I’m afraid it won’t work. Until they all WANT to go out and make a difference, then we’ll all be getting an eye-full.

Obama is going to put the nations coal industry out of business and that means a loss of thousands of job. The Coal Association of Ohio says this about Obama and his drones…
“It’s evident that this campaign has been pandering in states like Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia, Indiana and Pennsylvania to attempt to generate votes from coal supporters, while keeping his true agenda hidden from the state’s voters.
“Senator Obama has revealed himself to be nothing more than a short- sighted, inexperienced politician willing to say anything to get a vote. But today, the nation’s coal industry and those who support it have a better understanding of his true mission, to ‘bankrupt’ our industry, put tens of thousands out of work and cause unprecedented increases in electricity prices.

as a white man I am so looking forward to seeing the ignorant white american people be all scared and their cries of “he will ruin america”..last i looked Bush and Cheney haven’t exactly left a clean house for the incoming president. people cried when clinton won and when bush won also..the country will survive you wimps and oh yes..the word “brothers” and racist in the same sentence like being thrown around here today show how stupid this country has become. The sheer level of ignorance is mind boggling….the hate is something that has made people flock to Obama you idiots..My pop always said people were stupid and its been refreshing to watch the right implode and look like the deer in the headlight. My favorite moment is still Tina Fey..I mean Palin talk about her hunting moose and especially her 1st amendment folly of last week. I actually downloaded the Constitution to review if she is reading the same one I was taught..Must be a different version. Maybe she can ask Joe the Idiot about it

What is notable here is that Obama ventured into trying to tell people how to live. How he refers to them makes no difference. I’m just glad to see he’s actually confronting this absurd fashion statement. I’m still not voting for him, but he might surprise me if he’s elected. Doubt it, but I’ll leave open the chance. Now, if he could just change his stance on abortion. A culture of life would go a long way toward making him a great president. Doubt he’ll do that, either. Gal can dream, can’t she?

You people are so naive its not even funny! Having grown up and gone to schools that were 90% black, I can tell you the term “brothers” is not a term of endearment. It is a term of unity of blacks against whites, nothing more. I have the first hand experience. I was the one thanking God that I survived another day from the gang of “brothers” whose only goal was to terrorize me and the 4 other white people in my class. You have all been fooled by obolony. Don’t judge me until you have been forced to stand and sing “we shall overcome” amidst an ocean of black power fists in your face. Then is when you will know what the motivation within blacks really is.

I’ts just weird how, obviously, WHITE people get all upset about Obama’s right or his purpose in using “brother”. For example, here is an obvious white racist. “I guess when you are black you can say “brothers” and not be seen a racist”
Poor sap, you’re telling everybody how much colored people bother YOU!
HAHA! What a country. We’re in the crapper, finacially ruined,LIED into a war of choice that has murdered nearly one million innocent Iraqis and 4000 of our beloved children and this Goober is upset because Obama doesn’t get the same razz for using the word “Brother’ that this confused white man gets. There is a difference between wearing the pants extra loose, like the zoot-suitors did in the 40-50, or the xtra large style jeans worn hanging low off the hips, like the hipsters and hip hop kids wore them in the 90s, and wearing the jeans literally down under their ‘assets’, with the only thing covering their front parts being their over-sized jackets and hoodies these days. They wear them so low it is impossible not to wonder how they manage to walk around without them falling completely off to the ankles. But, alas, they aren’t the first folks to suffer physically in the name of style, hm? I mean, those jeans can’t actually be COMFORTABLE to wear like that.
To Kitty, who never uses the term ‘sister’ to refer to other women: I never said that ALL women use the term, that would be overly empirical. I’m happy that you like to refer to folks by their names. I do to. My point is that many women do use the term ‘sister’ to address their friends, or fellow members of a clique or club. And if you have never heard it said amongst women, well you have led an insular life and I presume socialize and exist only within a certain sector of society. Nothing wrong with that, we all have our social niches, only that yours is not the only one that exists, and many, many women of all ethnicities use the term ‘sister’, just as Biker Bob pointed out, the term ‘brother’ is not exclusive to blacks — “Brothers in Arms” for the military, “We are all brothers under the helmet”, etc.,etc. Stop being so bound to your narrow paradigms, people (Palin especially)! There is a whole big world out there full of ‘American’ realities that go way beyond your sphere of experience.
Posted by: kittyonice | November 3, 2008, 5:25 pm 5:25 pm
The term ‘brothers’ is not relegated to blacks. It is relegated to men only however, usually hip or cool men.
So if you aren’t wearing your pants low and you aren’t a man between the ages of 16-28, get over the fact that this doesn’t involve your a**.

dilligaf – Apparently, you learned nothing about the African American culture while you attended school with an overwhelming majority of African Americans. Being that I am an African American, I can assure you that the use of the word, “brothas” is indeed a term of endearment and it has absolutely nothing to do with alienating any other race. Just because you were not befriended at the school you attended tells me that you routinely made ignorant comments such as the one you made above. Please do not pass along your ignorance to others. It frightens the heck out of me what other misinformation you have passed along in your lifetime. I can only pray that you are very young, have no children and have been locked away from all civilization for the entirety of your lifespan.

I saw the interview…the quote did not appear to be directed toward “all inclusive brotherhood” but rather singled out his concern for fellow black brothers. Why even say brothers if not directed to one particular group? Why not say kids of today? I’ve seen Rev Wrights, Obama’s spiritual leader of 20 years, rants against white people…Michelle Obama’s mistrust of white people written in her thesis..Racism is alive and well on both fronts..to refute is not looking at reality as demonstrated by “Nat.”

I do not doubt that the comment was directed at African Americans. However, there wasn’t a racist undertone. And should we really squabble about such an inconsequential topic? Wearing ones pants off their stinking behind is not something that anyone should be proud of or wear with honor. Squabbling about such a nonsensical subject makes me wonder if some of you are just feeling “left out”. There’s plenty of other world events occurring that could use your intellectual perspective.

The term “brethren” is a form of the word “brother”. Does that mean that the word “brethren” used in congregations around the world only refers to the black men in the congregation??? Also, I am a woman; does the word exclude all women, white or black? I think not! Use a little common sense here. I would like to think of us all as brothers around the world. Maybe if we did, the world would be a better place in which to live. Maybe when Obama is elected, that can begin to come true.

There are alot of people out there that do not deserve that type of attitude. Give them a chance. And really, reading alot of the entries, this message goes to more than just Nat. The whole thing is racist. first of all, the article is not about the fact that he used the word BROTHER. It is about RESPECT. And that respect is for ones self and for the people they are around. And no it isn’t only thugs that wear this type of clothing. It is white kids who live in the country too. I know cuz my kids tried it. Guess how far it went? Now come on, maybe you should all read this article again and start all over. But on the other hand for the kids who do wear your pants around your knees< Do you need back surgery………..yet?

Maybe he is just trying to teach right from wrong to the young men and woman of today, be they black, white, red ,yellow ahhh did I miss any colors. In our America we have a lot of fatherless families. these young boys and girls need roll models. It is hard enough to get a job in todays world already. Maybe he is saying come on guys you need to straighten up and fly right or YOU WILL GO NO WHERE. Young people of today need to really start to think about where life is going to take them at a young age. If you let time drift by before you know it, it is gone and you have NOTHING.

The word “brothers” in this instance equals “guys” or “males”, and makes no reference to race – that is unless you think only African Americans are predisposed to wearing sagging pants – which of course would in and of itself be racist.
It could be construed as being sexist, in the sense that it assumes it is only males who are engaging in such egregiousness. But, I think we can all agree that pant sagging and public underwear foisting is generally a male sport, and many of us wouldn’t complain about women doing it anyway.
But on a far more serious note, I would simply like to say…thank you…thank you all you neocons and right wingers for all you have done for the country. You contributions truly have been immeasurable, and I’m sure we’ll all remember them longer than we can possibly imagine. For now though, we have it in our power to begin the world again…and so we shall…starting…tomorrow. Good night bleak prince.

Bubba also means brother. But it is all about communication.

Like someone else noted, members of my combat platoon and I think of and refer to each as brother. Because we are.

Curiousindep, are you crazy or just plain stupid? Better yet, why are you not in Iraq fighting the “great war”. You should be over there because, obviously, you are stupid and believe everything these nuts in the White House say. Prove your patriotism by signing up for the military, asking to be sent to that country, and staying there until we “win” the war>

It’s amazing how every great point and effort that Obama has made people are still trying to pick him apart word by word and wait for a gotcha moment. I would bet my life that he did not use the term brother to refer to black people. The topic was about sagging pants which are worn by young men/men of every race. He used the word brother because this is an issue that deals with men. Racist people associate the word brother with black people so I’m not surprised at some of the comments, but even frat boys call each other brother and they’re not all black.

If the election came down to You-Tube viewers, a pro-John McCain video would be the winner.
A video of an Iraq veteran giving his endorsement to McCain is the site’s most watched election video, with 11 million views, according to the BBC, which calls it “short, simple and powerful.”
The video opens with a young man with close-cropped hair standing outside in casual clothes next to an American flag.
“Dear Mr. Obama,” he says, and describes himself as an Iraq war veteran, whose yearlong tour convinced him that Iraqis are “just like us” in seeking freedom.
“Are they better off today than they were in 2002? You bet,” he says.
The man proceeds to list the reasons he doesn’t agree with Obama’s policies toward Iraq and instead is endorsing John McCain for president, “because he understands the fundamental truth, freedom is always worth the price.”
The man then walks away from the camera, revealing he has a prosthetic left leg.

Obama was stating a fact. PULL UP YOUR PANTS, what purpose does having your backend and underwear showing???? If they knew how stupid this looked, maybe they would.
Going back on Obama’s past, what about McCain’s? What about Liddy and Keating? Not so perfect record. Does he have the education Obama has? I understand he was in the military, and was a POW, but what experience does that give a person? McCain finished 5th from last in the Naval Academy. It took Palin 6 years for a 4 year course in journalism, doesn’t sound too good to me.
Other’s have gone into office with as much experience as Obama. We do need someone younger in office (except Palin). We need someone who is ready to face and clean up the mess our country is in. McCain says one thing one day and another thing the next day.
I think I have enough DIRTY politics, blame someone else for things in their past, when theirs is not any better.

I think it was just a slip when Obama said “brothers.” My bet is if you ask what he wishes he would have said it would be something like “you guys who have absolutely no regard for your grandmother and mine, who are walking around with your underwear showing, that’s inappropriate! I’m repulsed every time I see one of your exposed hind quarters. Why don’t you spare us this fundemental displeasure and pull up your pants!”

Albert Highfield: Maybe you need to ask yourself if John McCain was fighting for his country. I do not consider the Vietnam War fighting for “my” country anymore than I consider the Iraq War fighting for “my” country.

I agree with everything he said. AND I applaud him for finally not interjecting, “…Uh..” in between every other word. That …uh… is …uh… soooo …uh… lame. …Uh.

Obama is going down the Coal Chute.
Can we say coalgate????
I’m Loving it!!!!!!!!!

John — You obviously haven’t looked at the UMWA website.
Can you say McCain and Palin will pull anything out of their rear ends and try to make it not look like what it really is — crap?

And here all along I had thought these clueless males wore the sagging, grungy pants as a tribute to the greatest clown of all time, Emmett Kelly, and his comic figure “Weary Wille”! …LOL! (Google it.)

The rumor I heard is that wearing your pants down like that is a signal to your cellmates that you are ready to take it in the proctologist’s office.

Interesting, it’s def a waste of time making it illegal to wear sagging pants. The quickest way to stop brothers from wearing sagging pants, or speaking “broken english” for that matter, is give them a role model that makes a more clean cut look and speaking articulate language “cool”.
An interesting paradigm shift is about to happen in the black community a black kid can no longer tease another black kid about talking “white” because the response will be “I talk like the president”.
I never thought that would happen in my lifetime– it should be interesting to see if giving Afro American males a positive role model at the Presidential level changes attitudes in inner cities over the next few years.
