Palin Punk’d, the Annotated Version

Tracey Schmitt, the spokeswoman for Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, announced that "Governor Palin received a phone call on Saturday from a French Canadian talk show host claiming to be French President Nicholas Sarkozy. Governor Palin was mildly amused to learn that she had joined the ranks of heads of state, including President Sarkozy, and other celebrities in being targeted by these pranksters. C’est la vie."

You can listen to the call from the "Masked Avengers" HERE or HERE.

Following is the transcript of the relevant part with a few notes.

GOV. SARAH PALIN: This is Sarah.

MASKED AVENGERS: Ah, yeah, Gov. Palin.

GOV. PALIN: Helloooo!

MASKED AVENGERS: Just hold on for President Sarkozy, one moment.

GOV. PALIN: Oh, it’s not him yet, they’re saying. I always do that!

MASKED AVENGERS: Yes, hello, Gov. Palin…

GOV. PALIN: Hello, this is Sarah, how are you?

MASKED AVENGERS: Fine, and you? This is Nicolas Sarkozy speaking, how are you?

[Note: Sarkozy does not speak fluent English.]

GOV. PALIN: Oh, so good, it’s so good to hear you. Thank you for calling us.

MASKED AVENGERS: Oh, it’s a pleasure.

GOV. PALIN: Thank you sir, we have such great respect for you, John McCain and I. We love you and thank you for taking a few minutes to talk to me.

MASKED AVENGERS: I follow your campaigns closely with my special American adviser Johnny Hallyday, you know?

[Note: Hallyday is a French singer and actor.]

GOV. PALIN: Yes, good.

MASKED AVENGERS: Excellent. Are you confident?

GOV. PALIN: Very confident and we’re thankful that polls are showing that the race is tightening and –

MASKED AVENGERS: Well I know very well that the campaign can be exhausting. How do you feel right now, my dear?

GOV. PALIN: I feel so good. I feel like we’re in a marathon and at the very end of the marathon you get your second wind and you plow to the finish.

MASKED AVENGERS: You see, I got elected in France because I’m real and you seem to be someone who’s real, as well.

GOV. PALIN: Yes, yeah. Nicolas, we so appreciate this opportunity.

MASKED AVENGERS: You know I see you as a president one day, you too.

GOV. PALIN: (laughing) Maybe in eight years.

MASKED AVENGERS: Well, I hope for you. You know, we have a lot in common because personally one of my favorite activities is to hunt, too.

GOV. PALIN: Oh, very good. We should go hunting together.

MASKED AVENGERS: Exactly, we could go try hunting by helicopter like you did. I never did that. Like we say in French, on pourrait tuer des bebe phoques, aussi.

[Translation: We could also kill some baby seals.]

GOV. PALIN: Well, I think we could have a lot of fun together as we’re getting work done. We can kill two birds with one stone that way.

MASKED AVENGERS: I just love killing those animals. Mmm, mmm, take away life, that is so fun. I’d really love to go, as long as we don’t bring along Vice-President Cheney. (Laughs.)

GOV. PALIN: No, I’ll be a careful shot, yes.

MASKED AVENGERS: Yes, you know we have a lot in common also, because except from my house I can see Belgium. That’s kind of less interesting than you.

GOV. PALIN: Well, see, we’re right next door to different countries that we all need to be working with, yes.

MASKED AVENGERS: Some people said in the last days and I thought that was mean that you weren’t experienced enough in foreign relations and you know that’s completely false. That’s the thing that I said to my great friend, the prime minister of Canada Stef Carse.

[Note: That is not the name of the prime minister of Canada. The prime minster of Canada, since January 2006, is Stephen Harper. THIS is Stef Carse.]

GOV. PALIN: Well, he’s doin’ fine, too, and yeah, when you come into a position underestimated it gives you an opportunity to prove the pundits and the critics wrong. You work that much harder –

MASKED AVENGERS: I was wondering  because you are so next to him, one of my good friends, the prime minister of Quebec, Mr. Richard Z. Sirois, have you met him recently? Did he come to one of your rallies?

[Note: There is no prime minister of Quebec, though there is a premier. His name is Jean Charest. Sirois is a Canadian humorist.]

GOV. PALIN: I haven’t seen him at one of the rallies but it’s been great working with the Canadian officials. I know as governor we have a great co-operative effort there as we work on all of our resource development projects. You know, I look forward to working with you and getting to meet you personally and your beautiful wife. Oh my goodness, you’ve added a lot of energy to your country with um, with that beautiful family of yours.

MASKED AVENGERS: Thank you very much. You know my wife Carla would love to meet you, you know, even though you know she was a bit jealous that I was supposed to speak to you today. (Laughs.)

GOV. PALIN: Well, give her a big hug for me.

MASKED AVENGERS: You know my wife is a popular singer and a former top model and she’s so hot in bed. She even wrote a song for you.

GOV. PALIN: Oh my goodness, I didn’t know that.

MASKED AVENGERS: Yes, in French it’s called de rouge a levre sur un cochon, or if you prefer in English, Joe the Plumber…(singing) it’s his life, Joe the Plumber.

[Translation: Lipstick for a pig.]

GOV. PALIN: Maybe she understands some of the unfair criticism but I bet you she is such a hard worker, too, and she realizes you just plow through that criticism.

MASKED AVENGERS: I just want to be sure. That phenomenon Joe the Plumber. That’s not your husband, right?

GOV. PALIN: That’s not my husband but he’s a normal American who just works hard and doesn’t want government to take his money.

MASKED AVENGERS: Yes, yes, I understand we have the equivalent of the Joe the Plumber in France. It’s called Marcel, the guy with bread under his armpit, oui.

GOV. PALIN: Right, that’s what it’s all about, the middle class and government needing to work for them. You’re a very good example for us here.

MASKED AVENGERS: I see a bit about NBC, even Fox News wasn’t an ally, an ally, sorry as much as usual.

GOV. PALIN: Yeah, that’s what we’re up against.

MASKED AVENGERS: Gov. Palin, I love the documentary they made on your life. You know Hustler’s Nailin’ Paylin?

[Note: Nailin' Paylin is a pornographic movie.]

GOV. PALIN: Ohh, good, thank you, yes.

MASKED AVENGERS: That was really edgy.

GOV. PALIN: Well, good.

MASKED AVENGERS: I really loved you and I must say something also, so governor, you’ve been pranked by the Masked Avengers. We are two comedians from Montreal.

GOV. PALIN: Ohhh, have we been pranked? And what radio station is this?

MASKED AVENGERS: This is for CKOI in Montreal.

GOV. PALIN: In Montreal? Tell me the radio station call letters.

MASKED AVENGERS: CK…hello?…

I used to support Sen. Obama, but the Obama campaign continues to waste our time on non-issues and fake-controversies generated by their campaign with the cooperation of their pet mainstream-media. They said Gov. Palin was stoking hate in the crowds as if it was fact when in fact, after SS investigation, the “kill him” allegation was a fabrication, generated by the mainstream-media and the Obama campaign. They said in a single voice Gov. Palin was stupid and corrupt, and they “validated” that by citing reputable conservatives making that argument, except they take their quotes out of context, when one said “the mainstream media makes her out to be stupid and corrupt.” They said, in a single voice, that Sarah Palin’s wardrobe is too expensive, when it is revealed, all politicians do that so they have something expensive and high-profile to auction off for top dollar to charities. They know that, they just rather generate false controversies and run out the clock nursing their lead than to talk about the real issues: i.e. Sen. Obama criticizing our Constitution because it is restrictive in nauture and didn’t mandate distribution of weath (quote). Sen. Obama saying the Warren court wasn’t radical enough for him. Him toasting Rashid Khalidi, yes, the Palestinian terrorist. His accepting tens of millions of dollars in campaign contributions from the likes of Hamas, posing as small donors under $200, of course. What deal have you struck with Hamas already, Sen. Obama? they rather make stuff up about Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin than to address the real issues of our day.

I thought this election entered the silly season a few weeks ago but this tops everything. How did Palin’s staff not stop this from happening? Her staff is out to get her.
(And I say this as an Obama supporter who really dislikes the McCain-Palin ticket).
The Nailin’ Palin comment was pretty funny, though. Sigh.

H E L L O, Jake thanks for linking to the station. How funny. It appears that she did not know that Harper is the Prime Minister of Canada. I found that surprising because she is the Governor of Alaska.

To Pacific Moderate she could have been talking to her aides that this is a prank call and not been listening to every word and they had an accent.

How funny is is that Obama supporters are bashing Palin when Obama last year said the president of Canada is the leader of Canada.
What hypocracy.
So if you want a president that knows that the leader of Canada is not the president you can’t vote for Obama.
If you want a president who knows who the leader of Canada is then that rules out Obama.

That’s a very good point. Howeverm if you don’t understand what is being said, you either ask the person to repeat it or to clarify it. Don’t just go with the flow. Could you imagine if she did this in a critical situation?
No way. No how. No Palin.

There is a huge double standard in this country.

Obama has been given a free ride to the presidency. He is at the top of the ticket.

Many Alaskans are upset about paying the salary and expenses for Tracey Schmitt, the spokeswoman for Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
Today’s Alaska Newspaper:
Apology from McCain sought
PERSONAL: Phillips, Croft say the campaign’s attacks hurt Monegan’s reputation.
Daily News staff and wire reports
November 1st, 2008 04:59 AM
Republican presidential nominee John McCain should apologize for his campaign’s personal attacks on the Alaskan at the heart of the ‘Troopergate’ controversy, according two former Alaska legislative leaders.
Former House Speaker Gail Phillips, a Republican, and former Senate President Chancy Croft, a Democrat, on Friday said McCain’s campaign representatives made attacks that damaged the reputation of Walt Monegan, Gov. Sarah Palin’s fired public safety commissioner.

After all Obama is running on THE TOP of the ticket not the bottom.

If you listen to the audio, she sounds like a fifteen year old cheerleader receiving a call from the quarterback.
As a narcissistic, she is focused exclusively on the thought ‘I’m getting attention from the President of France!’
Not to mention her ignorance: Besides not knowing the Canadian PM’s name, she doesn’t even know Sarkozy’s wife’s name…she kind of dances around it until the caller provides it for her.
Also audible on the tape is her fury with her assistant Betsy
(a) for putting Palin on the line before Sarkozy is on the line (She thinks it inappropriate for her to wait three seconds…instead she expects a head of state to wait for HER), and
(b) when she finally comprehends that she’s been punked, she’s livid.
Methinks poor Betsy may be the latest casualty of Palin Revenge, as seen in Troopergate.

Yes, it’s true. The canadian leader is called prime minister, not president.
Now let’s take a look at the top of the Republican ticket:
MCCAIN ON SPAIN
The Spanish press is buzzing after U.S. presidential candidate John McCain failed to correctly identify Prime Minister Zapatero of Spain. He gets confused in the interview, apparently thinking Zapatero is someone from Latin America who is an enemy of the United States.
MCCAIN ON PAKISTAN
McCain just badly misstated the history of Pakistan. For someone claiming extensive foreign policy knowledge, this is simply not acceptable. McCain said Pakistan was a failed state before President Musharraf came to power. That is not true. Musharraf took power in a military coup in 1999 when he overthrew Nawaz Sharif.
MCCAIN ON CZECHOSLOVAKIA
During a July 14th town hall meeting in his home state of Arizona, Senator McCain referred to the country of “Czechoslovakia,” which has not existed since it was divided into the Czech Republic and Slovakia back in 1993.
MCCAIN ON THE IRAQ/PAKISTAN BORDER
During an interview on ABC’s Good Morning America with Diane Sawyer, Senator MCain expressed concern over events “on the Iraq/Pakistan border.” This is incorrect. It is actually Iran and not Iraq that borders Pakistan.

It’s amazing the the VP candidate for the republicans doesn’t know the name of the Prime Minister of the country that is the US’s biggest trading partner, Canada?
There’s only 2 countries that border the US and she doesn’t know the name of the Prime Minister of one of them?
Alaska is next door to Canada, so how hard can it be to not know the name of the Canadian Prime Minister? After all, she can probably see Canada from her front door too:)
Mrs energy expert doesn’t even know the name of the prime minister of the country that is the biggest supplier of energy to the US?
Let alone her not knowing the name of the Premier of Quebec, the 2nd largest Canadian province. Or that there is no prime minister of quebec, it would be like a Canadian thinking there is a president of the state of florida.
What an embarrassment. The US has already had one joke as president, does it really need another as VP?

Obamacrat: McCain gave five times more money to Khalid than the Woods Fund gave to an organization which Khalid’s wife ran in the south side of Chicago. I’ve got the Woods Funds tax records in front of me. Do you think McCain is a secret Muslim? Obama did not say the Warren court was not radical enough for him – he said that there may have been too much focus on the courts during the fight for civil rights. He’s not actually making a big issue out of it – McCain is simpl desperate. He has no solutions for anything, so he attacks Obama. What do you expect him to talk about? By the way, if I win, health care goes to the insurance industry and they can exclude anyone they want. That means you – if you smoke, are overweight, have diabetes, have ever taken an anti-depressant…not where he wants to g. He likes to talk about war a lot – but not what it will cost us. All we know is that with John McCain, we won’t have to worry about paying for the GI bill for the people who risked their lives to get an education, or for care for the disabled vets – because McCain doesn’t support that either – he has a 20% apporval rating from disabled vets.
The mainstream media simply let Palin speak and that was about all it took. As for corruption, it wasn’t the media – it was a bipartisan group in Alaska who found that she had been unethical, she is still under investigation for other problems and they haven’t even started the investigation into her Canadian pipeline. Ever tried to get a government contract? You’ll get 20 bids for a $10,000 job. Sarah claims she got ONE for a $30 Billion dollar job – and it went to Trancanadian. The head of her review board for the pipelne just happened to have left a job with Transcanadian as a lobbyst. Her job? To help them understand how to frame bids for government contracts. $30 Billion. To a Canadian company. So much for McCain, intergrity and his hatred of those darn lobbyists.

Its hard to find a more revered and loved American than Andy Griffith. When I think of a true American I think of him. Andy Griffith stands for truth and wisdom, and has been considered a faithful veteran, and someone who would never support communism. Andy grew up when the world was under attack by nationalism, and then he was a part of our national fight against communism. Often during his show, The Andy Griffith Show he would teach us lessons on right and wrong, and what the true American way is. His son in the show, famed director Ron Howard is also considered an American icon, and someone you can trust to do the right thing for America. Ron and Andy have put their support behind Barack Obama for President, because they believe he represents the BEST for America. They would NEVER support someone who didnt love this country as much as they do, nor would they support someone who was a threat to us all. Lets all be like Andy Griffith and vote for Barack Obama! Lets make America the America that Andy Griffith believes in! Obama/Biden, as American as apple pie!

This is such a non-story. When the man purporting to be President Sarkozy says something factually incorrect or ridiculous, she just says “Oh Good” or laughs it off. She is certainly not going to correct the guy, assuming she thinks it is Sarkozy, so the fact he misstates a person’s name and she does not chime in with the correct name is no big deal. Perhaps she thinks Sarkozy is drunk. Best stategy in dealing with a drunk on the phone is to just go along with whatever stupid thing they say.
In a way, I actually liked how Pakin handled this. Biden would have gotten into a fight with the guy (even while thinking it is actually Sarkozy.)

Obama didn’t know that the leader of Canada is the prime minister.
Canada has been under parliamentary rule for 140 years.
Obama never visited europe before this past july.
Obama has never been south of the border.
Obama has no experience and has never been vetted.

Review this
You are talking about a 20 second clip taken from a 30 minute speech on July 2 in Colorado Springs.
Naturally, it’s totally out of context.
“We are gonna grow our foreign service. Open consulates that have been shuttered and double the size of the peace corps by 2011 to renew our diplomacy.”
“We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we’ve set. We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded.”

Sarah Palin will go down in history as the dumbest VP choice ever. I can’t wait to see how fast the republican party gets her out of the lower 48 and back to an igloo after Tuesday!

Hmmm, interesting how my comments get deleted. Thankfully, I always save them. So, here i 1 from a few hors ago that got deleted:
Jake,
You forgot to annotate the part where Gov Palin LAUGHS/giggles when fake-Sarkozy says “I just love killing those animals. Mmm, mmm, take away life, that is so fun”. Pro-life, eh?
To David,
It’s very easy to confuse president with prime minister (like i wrote before), especially when you are in a country that doesn’t use a similar gov’t system as the one you are talking about. However, it is an entirely different matter when you don’t know WHO the person is (as opposed to what their title is). If you don’t know who the person is, as is very likely the case with Gov Palin (I’m not trying to smear her, just observing), then it is very unlikely that you would know what the person stands for or have an extensive knowledge of their positions. We are not talking about a far away land. Its Canada. Borders Alaska.
[she says "Well, he's doin' fine, too".. Stef Carse?? She was just over-eager to relate him and his experience to her situation in an attempt to defend herself. Why?? This is a call from a head of state, for goodness sake. Why is she spending the time talking about such silly things. She said nothing of substance that one would expect of a potential head of state. And she is very much a potential head of state given Sen McCain's age, which is what makes it very relevant to me. I could have had a similar conversation, and i am most definitely not qualified for the vice-presidency. I am just not impressed by this revealing call.]
And I absolutely agree: While its possible that she just didn’t hear properly, its also very important to try to clarify what you haven’t heard. Basic principles. I think this call reveals more about Gov Palin than the Katie C. interviews did.

I’d rather hear the audio where Biden gets punked and starts in about how you have to have an Indian accent to work at a 7-11. Or the bit where a guy pretends to be paralized but Joe asks him to stand up. Or the one where Joe gets tricked by some pranksters into saying how if Obama is elected….
Oh right, Ol’ foot-in-mouth Joe wasn’t being pranked in those situations, and needed no assistance in making an utter fool of himself.

Still not a big deal.
Bigger deal: Newspapers getting kicked off the Obama plane because their editorial pages endorsed McCain. A lot bigger deal!
Makes one wonder what would happen if they pranked foot-in-mouth Joe (not that he needs assistance in saying stupid things) if Obama the president. Can the Obama-ites enforce a Fairness Doctrine dictated equal time rebuttal across the US-Canadian border?
Sounds far-fetched? So does the Fainess Doctrine but it will be a reality if Obama is elected.

I’m laughing just thinking about them all, but I can’t decide on if the Indian 7-11 one or him trying to make paralyzed man walk again is the best one. But there is also the one where he says if Obama is elected…That one is actually a little bit scary.

You republicans — geez– where is your sense of humor? First, you put Ms Palin in the VP slot, which clearly was an attempt at humor on your part– why else would you have done it?– and now you republicans all foam at the mouth in fury when we laugh at her antics! I thought she was hysterically funny when she “pretended” to go along with the claim of seeing Belgium from France, and the wrong name of the Canadian PM! And she made a very clever pun about killing two birds with one stone! Clearly, John McCain, who has NO sense of humor was going after the comedian vote when he selected her. Lighten up you guys!!! I think she has a great future on the Vegas circuit as a comedian after the election!!
And on a more serious note, God help us if the Republicans win this election. I fear for the future of our country and the world if they get into office. John McCain and Sarah Palin are, between them, stupid, arrogant, sleazy, liars, hypocrits, NARCISSISTS OF THE HIGHEST ORDER, and an embarassment to this country. If they are elected, we will never leave Iraq, we will be declaring war on Iran and Russia, and probably Syria too, be paying off the war for the next 100 years, have 401Ks worth less than nothing, and have a supreme court that will take us back to Medieval times. And trust me on this, the $5000 tax credit for health insurance ain’t going to buy squat on the open market for health care. Not to mention that we will all be paying HIGHER taxes if out health benefits are taxed as McCain wants. They have not done anything to discourage the disgusting hatred that has emerged during this campaign. We are now, adn will continue to be, hated throughout the world, at least during the times that we aren’t a laughing stock.
Barack Obama and Joe Biden are the only ones who can restore our credibility internationally and with dignity and diplomacy, get ous out of this stupid, ill conceived war which has killed thousands of Americans, Iraquis and others, and get us on the road to financial health.

Since we on the topic of French leader Sarkozy, read this excerpt from Jake’s report(Oct 28) about what the REAL Sarkozy had to say:
The respected Israeli newspaper Ha’artez reports that according to a “senior Israeli government source, the reports reaching Israel indicate that Sarkozy views the Democratic candidate’s stance on Iran as ‘utterly immature’ and comprised of ‘formulations empty of all content.’”
Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., met with Sarkozy in July and they are said to have discussed Iran at length.
(End excerpt.)
It seems that many people on this thread think Palin is a fool because of a Sarkozy impersonator. Meanwhile, it seems Sarkozy (himself) thinks Obama is a fool. For what it is worth.

Posted by: topo2005 | November 1, 2008, 11:07 pm 11:07 pm

Sarkozy views the Democratic candidate’s stance on Iran as ‘utterly immature’ and comprised of ‘formulations empty of all content.
That is not the thinking of some poster on the internet. That is the thinking of Sarkozy.
By the way, to the poster who thinks Republican’s have no sense of humor, I like to think I do and I came up with an anagram I am rather proud of (Actually, the last half of the sentence is an anagram of the first half.)
“Mr. Barack Hussein Obama rubs Chairman Mao’s beak.”
So there.

I doubt this is going to change many votes, even those of undecideds. I can’t play the audio on my computer, but from the transcript and people’s comments it would seem that while Palin apparently didn’t know she was being pranked, it still does seem likely that she was just going along in some senses. It also seems that if you want to look fairly at this, you have to put yourselves in Palin’s shoes. As for her not calling him out on his inaccurate statements, a story from CTV (“Quebec pair prank Palin with faux-Sarkozy phone call”) says the comedian talked fast, for one thing. And again, it seems Palin wouldn’t likely contradict him or be motivated even to scrutinize very closely what he was saying in order to criticize him. She clearly seems happy to hear from him, especially at this point right before the election. I’m sure any time candidates get friendly calls from leaders at this point, they’re all going to be friendly in reply. And we rarely if ever hear what’s said in such calls, especially at the time they happen, so what do we the average public know about what these high-stakes calls are like? We do know how important “friends” and alliances and schmoozing are in politics.
I would also think that a “go along” attitude would be what would be expected of politicians in general whenever they end up talking with other leaders, even of friendly countries, and even if nothing objectionable gets said. I wouldn’t doubt that there have been some leaders here and there that might make some inappropriate or questionable remarks, and the most logical thing is treat all talks as first being between heads-of-state, not between people. Caution should have to be put before candor, shouldn’t it? You’re not going to talk to another leader who is apparently an ally without being on guard. They might not be an ally, they might not be trustworthy, and in this, Sarkozy is the leader of another country. In dealing with international relations, being cautious and delaying reactions is the only prudent course and would seem to be fundamental. If an average person happened to have a few minutes alone with a powerful leader, and that leader said slipped in some strange or inappropriate things, you’d probably think it wise not to react right then either if you could avoid it, much less if who knows what in international relations and also in politics was at stake. Among other things, the average person would immediately wonder if that leader could possibly make trouble for him. He’d want to get out of there and think over what happened.
So if this really had been Sarkozy, then, what was she to say, given all these factors? Such a call wouldn’t have caused some international incident or crisis between the U.S. and France, but that a leader would have an unstable side like that – particularly apparent in the remarks on his wife and Hustler, which even in this “joke” could easily be considered sexism and actual sexual harassment against Palin by the comedian – would seem to have to be reported somewhere, particularly to intelligence, even though he was only talking to a VP candidate. If the comedian hadn’t identified himself, it stands to reason that something would have been done about ithe conversation afterward (although it probably also would have been suspected to have been a hoax). That would be logical, considering we’re talking international relations and national security concerns, but then again, I always assumed that presidential candidates would have to fill out a form with someone in the federal government and present their IDs to some government office somewhere, and then have all their information and their IDs verified by the office, not much differently from having to present IDs for things like a driver’s license or anything else. And that it’s apparently not the case means that some change in the law needs to be demanded so that a process like that is legally required.

Hi Jake,
First of all, in general, we Canadians LOVE it when anyone takes notice of us (good, bad, indifferent). So, THANKS!
I just wanted to mention that the premier of Quebec is commonly referred to in that province as the “prime minister” of Quebec, so that aspect of the call is not inaccurate.
I’m not a political scientist, so I might be wrong but I believe that technically provincial premiers can be called “prime ministers” as well throughout Canada, although recent practice (of at least the past generation or so) is to use the term premier. The premier (and the national prime minister) is the “first minister” of the Crown (i.e. the Queen).
Cheers!

Olivia Justice,
I have no qualms with her being tricked. Her staff should have verified this call. That is more of a reflection on the quality of their campaign organisation than on Palin.
However, she sounded more like a teenage girl than a stateswoman and she failed to pick up on all the heavy hints the guy was dropping.
She really came off stupid. She sounded like she wanted to polish Sarkosy’s shoes or something.
Did you listen to the tape or just read the transcripts?
The transcripts just don’t do the interview justice. You have to hear her giggle and coe to understand.

Posted by: Paul New man | November 2, 2008, 5:22 am 5:22 am

The conversation just shows what a poor listener she is, how little she knows about foreign affairs and who is running what, even CANADA where she is supposed to have been working with Canada on Energy issues, it shows how shoddily her office is run and it shows that she is so egotistical to think that a French President would call her out of the blue. Basically is shows how poorly the vetting was and how impulsive and reactive McCain is. And sadly, there will be people who would STILL want to put this thing in office. The fact that she could possibly be elected at all shows how low the US has fallen. We have become a joke to the nations of the world that used to revere us. We have lost all respectability with Bush, McCain, Palin.

Posted by: N | November 2, 2008, 5:46 am 5:46 am

There is a huge double standard in our country.
Obama thought Canada had the same political system as the U.S.
Obama said in a debate last year he would work with the president of Canada.
Canada has no president.
Canada has a prime minister as their leader.
What is scary is that the dems have it backwards.
The dems have their inexperienced person at the TOP of the ticket.

Does that even sound like it makes any sense whatsoever?? Heck no! Please, a 7th grader would have been suspect of such a purported call. Damn, they are seriously stupid.

Posted by: Famuan | November 2, 2008, 7:38 am 7:38 am

Palin’s ignorance was on display and now will be broadcast world wide. She is so clueless that she thinks it is proper protocol for her to receive a personal call from Sarkozy, and she addresses him as “Nicholas”, instead of “Prime Minister” as if he were the waiter or busboy. She never picked up on the tasteless clues that this was not a real call. Her ego surpasses McCain’s, her handlers are even more stupid and inexperienced than she is and she deserves to go back to Alaska in shame for thinking she is in any way qualified even to be Mayor of Wasilla, much less VEEP.
This performance of hers give new meaning to “ignoramus”. She is too ignorant to even know she is ignorant.
No wonder she thinks she is the second coming of Christ.

The left really is out there. If Palin had responded to the misidentification of Stef Carse instead of Harper as the Prime Minister of Canada, you all would be screaming, “OMGOMG what if that HAD been the real Sarkozy and she had corrected the President of France!!!1!11! She would have caused an international incident!! This woman is too stupid and undiplomatic to lead!!”
Biden mispeaks regularly. Obama has changed his positions so many times you need box scores to know what position he is playing today. But, if Palin or McCain were eating and asked for grape jelly with their biscuit and then called the waitress over and asked instead for strawberry jam, the headlines on ABC, CBS, MSNBC, etc and every liberal blog would be, “Republicans so indecisive can’t order breakfast”. Then there would be 200 responses about how stupid Palin is and that if she can’t be decisive about jelly at breakfast how can she make policy decisions. The worst part is that the left is completely oblivious of their own hypocrisy and double standards.

If the left wing media were really after Palin, they would be investigating the Alaska Independence Party and her and Todd’s connections. They would be investigating the building of their mansion at city expense. They might investigate why a couple who are millionaires only paid 15% in taxes on a reported $160,000 in income. They would be investigating her medical records, which she promised to produce. They might be investigating her ties to felon Ted Stevens, who was her mentor in getting all that pork money to Wasilla and Alaska. And how about the ethics charges? What if the Personnel Board ALSO finds her guilty?
Palin put herself in the spotlight, and has a ton of personal baggage that I bet McCain wishes he had known about. None of this is the media’s doing…they put her put there and people found out things on their own..the media followed the stories and did not create them.

Posted by: David L. Wylie | November 2, 2008, 2:32 pm 2:32 pm

I do not expect President Obama to save me from anything, nor do I expect huge tax cuts. the truth is, this country is in horrible shape, as are many of the states, and when the government is so far in debt, state funds are cut, which means city funds are cut, which translates to jobs and services. We need a tax increase, and if it doesn’t happen federally, you can bet your town is asking for more. Mostly, we need to get out of the Middle East and put that $10 BILLION dollars a month to work at home.
Do you McCain supporters foresee anything other than bombs and troops in his administration? If a war economy is so great, how comes ours is tanking? If we’re saving the world, why do they hate us? It’s time to step back from the Bush isolationist, everybody wants a democracy theory and get back to the Constitution. I do not want to be spied on, taxed for a wrong war, nor watch my grandchildren grow up paying the debts of this President. Obama is not perfect, but compared to the alternative, he’s damn close.

$500 bribe? What are you drinking? McCain is after you with a $5000 bribe that he calls health insurance. You know how much health insurance that will buy a family of four? About 3 months’ worth. Plus he will have to raise taxes (and start a patriotic draft) to pay for the invasions of Iran, Syria, Pakistan…all in the name of security. Yup, let’s keep torturing prisoners, holding people illegally in Gitmo, making friends all around the world just like Bush. How can so many people think that will work?

I think Sarah Palin’s reputation as a ding-bat, airhead, small-mind, extreme right-wing, creationist, ignorant, fruitcake has been solidified.
How can any hardworking, REAL American want this woman to have even the smallest possibility to balance the budget, send troops into battle, and negotiate treaties?

Talk about fishy timing….here it is and from Canadians? Tell them to keep their filthy crude humor north of the border….we Americans do not appreciate it one bit!!

On the name of the Canadian PM, I’ll cut just a bit of slack because of the accent (“Stef Carse”-”Stephen Harper”–spoken with that goofy accent over the phone by someone believed to be French) and because of the protocol calling for not “gotcha-ing” a foreign leader. I can picture a frog screwing something like that up.
Tapper said Quebec has a premier, not a PM. The two terms are used interchangeably. Now who’s the screwup. As for not knowing the PM/Premier of Quebec, that province has nothing to do with Alaska, and I suspect most Canadians premiers don’t know who the governor of Utah is. (They might know Louisiana, though.)

I find it really sad that people like “Equalityrpt” who call Canadians filthy are so narrow minded that they can’t see that they are being told “they’re the best” to keep them from seeing how much better off they can be.
I am Canadian. I have free health care. I can go to any part of Canada and see ANY doctor, surgeon, or specialist, or go to any hospital and pay nothing. I can get an MRI, CAT scan, mammograms, blood work, get my children delivered, chemo if I need it, medical checkups and even JUST reassurances from a doctor and it costs me nothing. My medication costs much less than in the US and if I lose my job I can still go to the doctor and don’t have to worry about how I am going to pay for my or my children’s medical care.
Universal health care is standard in Canada, UK and even in developing countries like Brazil.
Even Canada’s education system provides greater access. As an example, university rankings put the University of Michigan at 18 and the Canadian university McGill at 20. Pretty equal in a ranking of 100, so shouldn’t costs for students be similar too? Just tuition and fees for an out of state student interested in Arts/Science to attend Michigan is $33,069/year. While at McGill it is $5,378.40. This doesn’t include room, boarding food etc.
Minimum wage in Canada is set at the provincial level and ranges: $8.00-$10.00/hr In the US, it’s $6.55. Even with a lower dollar Canada seems to be in a better situation.
Canada has THE best banking system in the world, followed by Sweden. The US’ banking system is rated 40.
Canada is a FREE and DEMOCRATIC nation. We are not Socialist. We watch the same TV shows, buy the same stuff off our shelves and are both Capitalists countries.
So Wake UP America! Wake UP!
