1. Senator Obama, will you invest political capital in overturning the recent decisions against gay marriage, or will you work toward a redefinition of the States granting churches the power to declare marriages but requiring even these to be registered as civil unions thus preserving the separation of church and state by taking away the state’s power to declare a marriage?
Reword that for simplicity if you can, but it is the workable approach and points out that the current flaw is marriage defined as sacred union and the phase “power vested in me by the State of” conflates church and state. The middle ground is the sacred union and the civil union should be different. The church has no power over civil union and the state has no power over sacred union; therefore, a couple interested in both is engaging in two different and separate contracts.
2. Senator Obama, what is your position on the net neutrality proposals given limited wireless capacity and its applications to public safety? Should there be a means to set priorities in times of emergency?

Frieda, get over it about a college paper, he is YOUR President, like it or not.

Just Wondering: I’ll give you credit for excellent use of the Obama playbook: Deflect an issue by downplaying its importance.
Just so we are clear on this, I certainly did not suggest media bias and the Democrat’s predispostion toward suppressing dissenting voices was the most important issue of the day. But I will predict here that at some point in time early on in the Obama adminstration it will be the hottest story in the news cycle. Will the spark be the Fairness Doctrine, their treatment of Senator Joe Lieberman or something else? That I can’t say.
But I can say this: The Democratic Party that once prided itself on promoting free speech is no more.

I would like to know if he will use a drive for creating energy independence as a means for economic stimulus…create jobs and help our country become independent of foreign oil.
Dino, is disagree that Republicans have “literally ruined the world” but you are entitled to your opinion. However, I do agree that now is not the time to take “empty pop shots.” The American People have spoken, and President-Elect Obama has the right to select whomever he wants for his staff. When he begins to appoint nominees who require Senate confirmation then there will plenty of time for “Advice and Consent.”
Now as for President Bush needing to confess that he “lied us into a fake war,” that is absolutely bogus. President Bush did no such thing.
While it is true that no WMDs were found, the fact is that many Democrats said that Saddam Hussein had WMDs. Some even said he was “imminent threat” back in 1998 when Congress gave President Clinton the authorization for regime change. By the way, back in July of this year 550 METRIC TONS of yellowcake uranium that had been stored in Iraq was transferred out of Iraq (at Iraq’s request) and sold to Canada. For a county that does not produce uranium and had no nuclear program, that is a lot of yellowcake uranium being stored.
Finally the war is not fake. After 12 years of diplomatically trying to persuade Saddam Hussein to comply with the conditions of the 1991 cease fire, the Bush Administration pushed the UN Security Council into issuing a final ultimatum. When Saddam Hussein still refused to comply, President Bush terminated the 1991 cease fire and resumed the Gulf War–under a UN mandate.

Republicans saying “some of us kooks voted for more of the same” does not entitle them to demand that Obama and America submit to the will of A BUNCH OF KOOKS.

“Finally the war is not fake. After 12 years of diplomatically trying to persuade Saddam Hussein to comply with the conditions of the 1991 cease fire, the Bush Administration pushed the UN Security Council into issuing a final ultimatum”
It just was the wrong war at the wrong time. Saddam was contained and impotent.
James Danley
Bush, Cheney and the rest implied a potential attack on the U.S. by Iraq with WMD’s, equating 9/11 with Saddam was their plan, they wanted Iraqi oil fields, they went to war without a plan or a reason, they went to war by choice to further the ‘neo-con’ PNAC ideology… it was their ‘pre-emptive’ attack policy…………..
-Iraq was the most secular nation in the Middle East and was by far the least likely to harbor or support Wahhabist terrorists.
-Bush senior believed that after Saddam was defeated in Desert Storm, the people of Iraq would rise up and overthrow him. This clearly did not happen. It seems a bit optimistic to believe that after the forced removal of Saddam, that they would immediately embrace a democratic system of government which was about as familiar to them as totalitarian regimes are to us.
-The objective of Al-Qaeda was to instill fear into Americans. They have been far more successful than even they thought possible. -Over the course of just a few years we have changed our character. We have traded in our freedoms for what was supposed to be increased security.
and…… the crazies start yet again….
-James Dobson’s Focus on the Family Action sent out a fundraising email to members that likened the victories of Barack Obama and congressional Democrats in Tuesday’s election to the Nazi bombing of England during World War II. The author of this vile letter is Tom Minnery, Senior Vice President of Focus on the Family Action. It was nearly inevitable that anger over losing the 2008 election would soon provoke right-wing extremists to violate Godwin’s Law. Obama’s victory in Colorado may have been particularly galling for the Colorado Springs based Focus on the Family, which has been heavily involved in the political campaign this year advocating for conservative issues. James Dobson personally endorsed the McCain-Palin ticket this fall.

As for some people saying give him some time, HE is the one who said these things. HE is the one who bs’d all these poor dolts into voting for him. He made promises to everybody…to get their vote.
If I were his daughters, I wouldn’t be counting on that puppy very soon….
Thanks Mack. It will be hard for some to transition out of campaign rhetoric to policy making. Intense emotions are addictive. The Onion piece was funny because it is both precise and good advice. The more zealous supporters need to accept that the President-elect will be distancing himself from them unless they can start working on a more positive agenda. The Republicans will rail a bit longer but it is expected.
Meanwhile, a young Senator is taking on a very heavy load given the drop in the market, the jobless numbers, the auto industry implosion, the sabre rattling from Russian and so on. My suspicion is about this election is that it has little to do with much of what is being claimed on the blogs and in the press.
Change is not the mantra; S.O.S. is.
And for that load, young shoulders may be exactly the right resource.

Mack, Saddam Hussein was not impotent. He had several terrorist training camps and he had given $10 million to the families (up to $25,000 per family) of Palestinian suicide bombers. He clearly was supporting, training and harboring terrorists. Following the attacks of 9/11, President Bush changed our policy from being reactive to being proactive.

Blue, the Bush Administration did have a plan. Unfortunately just prior to the beginning of the invasion, Turkey refused to allow us to use their airspace. That meant no northern flank in the invasion, which allowed Saddam Hussein and his men to escape out of Bagdhad.
Now as for us going to war because we wanted the Iraqi oil fields, that’s just another lie perpetrated by the Left. If that had been the case why don’t we have the oil fields now?

Welcome to the Obama White House, a/k/a The Freddy/Fannie, Goldman Sachs, and Chicago Pol Retirement Home.
“Iraq is a very wealthy country. Enormous oil reserves. They can finance, largely finance the reconstruction of their own country. And I have no doubt that they will.”
Richard Perle, chair
The Pentagon’s Defense Policy Board
July 11, 2002
In April 2001, President George W. Bush’s Cabinet agreed to use military intervention in Iraq, because it was considered a destabilizing influence to the flow of oil to international markets from the Middle East. Neoconservatives in the U.S. called for the sell-off of all of Iraq’s oil fields and planned for a coup d’etat long before the September 11th attacks, hoping a new government would use, “Iraq’s oil to destroy the OPEC cartel through massive increases in production above OPEC quotas.”
Those plans were abandoned shortly after the invasion because former Shell Oil Company CEO Philip Carroll, who had been charged with their implementation, refused to be involved with Iraqi oil industry privatization since it could have led to the exclusion of U.S. firms, unlike the state-run oil ministry.
U.S. oil industry consultant Falah Aljibury alleged that soon after Bush took office in 2001, he took part in secret meetings in Washington, the Middle East, and California involving an overthrow of the Iraq regime. Aljibury told BBC’s Newsnight that he, “interviewed potential successors to Saddam Hussein on behalf of the Bush administration.”
-> In an August 30 2005 speech, Bush stated a role of the occupation of Iraq was to prevent oil fields from falling into hands of terrorists: “If Zarqawi and bin Laden gain control of Iraq, they would create a new training ground for future terrorist attacks. They’d seize oil fields to fund their ambitions.”
Alan Greenspan, the former Federal Reserve chairman, said in an interview that the removal of Saddam Hussein had been “essential” to secure world oil supplies, a point he emphasized to the White House in private conversations before the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Additionally, in his memoir, Mr. Greenspan writes: “I am saddened that it is politically inconvenient to acknowledge what everyone knows: the Iraq war is largely about oil. However, a Bush Administration foreign policy critic Dr. Robert Jervis stated: “Indeed, it is quite likely that failure [in Iraq] will lead the most common explanation to be that the war was fought for oil and Israel. This would be unfortunate.”
The invasion was initially called Operation Iraqi Liberation until the acronym OIL was noticed and it was changed to Operation Iraqi Freedom.

How the Republicans ran the government.
REPUBLICAN GOVERNMENT
$421 Billion OVER BUDGET (2002)
$555 Billion OVER BUDGET (2003)
$596 Billion OVER BUDGET (2004)
$554 Billion OVER BUDGET (2005)
$574 Billion OVER BUDGET (2006)
This includes RECORD overspending.
And the Republicans had the nerve during the election to try to label the Democrats as “overspenders of your hard earned tax dollars”.
Where did the Republicans think this money was going to come from? The moon? 7/11 and Macdonalds workers?
Goodbye Republican right wing; the electorate has given you the boot.

Just want to say, I presented my questions as I thought a journalist might. Maybe Obama has good answers for them…I actually think he might do a good job.
If McCain had been elected, you could ask “Mr. McCain, why didn’t you seek more oversight of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac if it was such a big concern to you”
OR
“Mr. McCain, you stated that you need to learn more about the economy. Are you concerned about your ability to manage such the current crisis?”
ALL presidents should face tough questions at times, even Obama.
pefros
you are correct Sir..
simple Republican math, start 2 wars, reduce taxes for the rich, and ‘charge it’ to the citizens..
privatize the profits for the few,
and, dare I say it…
‘socialize’/subsidize the losses to the public via bailouts and selective loans to favored corporations..
Republicans, the party of ‘small government’ and ‘fiscal responsibility’… ??????????
well, everyone knows how big a fraud Republicans are now

I would like to know how he plans to change the press accessibility to the White House compared to the last eight years
what a waste of human breathe, to be asking the POTUS-elect, what he will do about rezko, I can answer that’
rezko-he is in the hands of the courts-leave him there.
acorn-leave them to be taken care of by the election board people.
don’t burden the president with that kind of stuff.
to president elect obama,
“the lodge is cheering for you”
“Mr. Obama, do you still plan to impose mandatory community service on secondary and post-secondary students? As a constitutional scholar, do you believe that this is a proper use of federal power? Would it be a requirement to obtain federal aid?”
shockie-
if obama wrote a note on a paper airplane everyday, and sailed it out of a window to the press to tell us about, it would be better than the bush crew.
“It was a good one. Which he didn’t answer.”
Obama did provide an answer to Jake’s question about Ahmedinejad’s letter of congratulations and whether he had answered it. Obama stated it had only been three days since he was elected and that there would not be a knee jerk reaction to the letter, meaning clearly it had not been responded to, at least yet. He also went on to say that it needed to be communicated clearly to him that he is currently not president. As usual, his response was measured and cautious. What a relief!

I couldn’t imagine calling a mixed race person a mutt – but If the POTUS refers to himself by the term does that make it OK for me to use it as well?

I use mystical trances to talk to my old dog ‘Sami’.
Blue – my point on your point is – that when W started in 2001 – Iran was already a threat in many ways, Al Queda was already out to get us Pakistan already had A-bombs in the govt and terrorists on the frontiers, A North Korea already had the bomb, and Russia’s Putin was only playing nice til he could rebuild on Europe’s petro-money, and China – China keeps on growing with lead filled toys for us to enjoy.
In short the strategic situation was the same, whether getting rid of one tyrant Saddam was worth the price is a question but hardly the “worst” foreign policy decision made by a President the last 100 years.
Basically our struggle against terrorists and tyrants will continue, because THEY will not relent, at least for long. We are at 2001 again perhaps – we should be smarter because what we have gone thru? Are we??

re: ‘Are we??’
I sort understand your point, but..
Bush’s policy re: Iraq was wrong, as at the time the known enemy was in Afghanistan. He/they should have resolved that conflict, had they done so it would have established a much better framework for any future policy in the mid-east, and I would assume, that it also would have demonstrated American ‘resolve’ and ability to actually get the bad guys.
Iraq proved that America, could attack, but could not finish what it started with a positive outcome, there was no overall strategic and regional goal..and that it was prone to underestimating those we were fighting and also slow to change tactics..By diverting resources from Afghanistan it gave terrorists an idea that they could beat America.

Blue, protecting the oil fields from falling into the hands of terrorists is not the same thing as wanting to take the oil fields.
Your argument about Bush planning to overthrow Saddam Hussein before 9/11 is interesting! First you say the Bush Administration didn’t have a plan, and then you complain that Bush PLANNED the attacks before 9/11. You can’t have it both ways! Actually the Congress gave President Clinton the green light for regime change in Iraq in 1998. And the policy of regime change in Iraq was still in effect when Bush took office.

I don’t believe Bush is smart enough to plan anything….
yes,… Bush and his PNAC adviser buddies planned to invade Iraq, and, they didn’t plan what to do once they got there, or how to pay for it.
You only need to examine the first 4 or so years of the Iraq war to see how little they actually knew of what would happen.

Jake,
I just watched the press conference. I think that was too many questions about national security and foreign relations. Not enough about the economy. Nothing about energy independence. I don’t think anybody even bothered to ask about health care (wasn’t health care the issue that concerned voters more than foreign policy?) So what’s up with that?…
C’mon Jake, if you guys don’t pressure him about those things right now, those issues may not be addressed vigorously enough by his transition team and then it might be too late after administration changes hands. I am sure they don’t need our reminders to get them to do things and I’m sure they know what they are doing, but questions always make them better and the sooner those questions are asked the more effect they might have on his admin. I am of the opinion that foreign policy can wait till he takes office.
Ryan C wrote: “Your previous excuse was that Saddam had violated the 1991 ceasefire. Never any mention of WMDs that were not there. The invasion of Iraq was based on a lie…”
Did you even read my comment? I did say:
“While it is true that no WMDs were found, the fact is that many Democrats said that Saddam Hussein had WMDs. Some even said he was (an) “imminent threat” back in 1998 when Congress gave President Clinton the authorization for regime change. By the way, back in July of this year 550 METRIC TONS of yellowcake uranium that had been stored in Iraq was transferred out of Iraq (at Iraq’s request) and sold to Canada.”
But whether there were WMDs or not is NOT RELEVANT. That’s because one of the conditions of the 1991 cease fire put the onus on Saddam Hussein to prove that he no longer had WMDs; and to prove how he disposed of the WMDs. He did neither! That’s because he wanted his neighbors (and the rest of the world) to continue to believe he had WMDs. Had we not invaded Iraq, his neighbors would still believe that he had WMDs and continue to be bullied by Saddam Hussein. And some of that 550 metric tons of yellowcake uranium might have fallen into the hands of al Qaeda or some other terrorist group.

Just so we are clear on this, I certainly did not suggest media bias and the Democrat’s predispostion toward suppressing dissenting voices was the most important issue of the day. But I will predict here that at some point in time early on in the Obama adminstration it will be the hottest story in the news cycle. Will the spark be the Fairness Doctrine, their treatment of Senator Joe Lieberman or something else? That I can’t say.
But I can say this: The Democratic Party that once prided itself on promoting free speech is no more.

Change is not the mantra; S.O.S. is.

Will you please pick Colin Powell as secretary of defense. thank you.

How the Republicans ran the government.
REPUBLICAN GOVERNMENT
$421 Billion OVER BUDGET (2002)
$555 Billion OVER BUDGET (2003)
$596 Billion OVER BUDGET (2004)
$554 Billion OVER BUDGET (2005)
$574 Billion OVER BUDGET (2006)
This includes RECORD overspending.
And the Republicans had the nerve during the election to try to label the Democrats as “overspenders of your hard earned tax dollars”.
Where did the Republicans think this money was going to come from? The moon? 7/11 and Macdonalds workers?
Goodbye Republican right wing; the electorate has given you the boot.

Even the Big shot Republican wing-nuts are hittin’ the skids……….
‘Sheldon Adelson, a casino billionaire and financial backer of right-wing attack groups, has gone bankrupt:
Las Vegas Sands Corp., billionaire Sheldon Adelson’s casino company, fell the most in New York trading since going public after saying it may default on debt and face bankruptcy.’

ALL presidents should face tough questions at times, even Obama.

you are correct Sir..
simple Republican math, start 2 wars, reduce taxes for the rich, and ‘charge it’ to the citizens..
privatize the profits for the few,
and, dare I say it…
‘socialize’/subsidize the losses to the public via bailouts and selective loans to favored corporations..
Republicans, the party of ‘small government’ and ‘fiscal responsibility’… ??????????
well, everyone knows how big a fraud Republicans are now

“He clearly was supporting, training and harboring terrorists. Following the attacks of 9/11, President Bush changed our policy from being reactive to being proactive”
Your previous excuse was that Saddam had violated the 1991 ceasefire.
Never any mention of WMDs that were not there.
The invasion of Iraq was based on a lie and was the wrong place to exercise US military might.

if you examine where the U.S. has ended up after
8 years of Bush & Cheney, one might with some dark humor conclude that they were on the payroll of bin Laden as they have achieved what he could not and never dreamed of in bringing America down…..
as someone around here used to post in all of their comments: “Mission Accomplished’
Sums up the whole Bush/Cheney reign.

Mr. President Elect, do you believe you will have enough of your team in place so that you can all hit the ground running when you walk into the White House as our next President? How close do you anticipate being on that day?

Will you allow US Attorney Fitzgerald (N. Dist. IL) to remain in place until he completes his investigation and prosecution of Chicago/Illinois political corruption?
f/u: Are you concerned that your political mentor, Emil Jones, may be the next target in the investigation?

Blue – that doesn’t fly anymore. Your man will be the Man. His decisions will decide whether our national interests are protected. We are far from “brought down” but what happens from now is very important to whether tyrants and terrorists are contained in this world.
Anyhow – my questions?
What will be DOJ priorities? Will US Attys be fired en masse like Clinton did or in part like Gonzales did? What will come of ACORN , Rezko or for that matter Gonzales investigations?
Will you keep Gates and why? How would that work bureaucratically – ie would he hire or keep his own staff even if he is “transitional”?

what a waste of human breathe, to be asking the POTUS-elect, what he will do about rezko, I can answer that’
rezko-he is in the hands of the courts-leave him there.
acorn-leave them to be taken care of by the election board people.
don’t burden the president with that kind of stuff.

“Mr. Obama, do you still plan to impose mandatory community service on secondary and post-secondary students? As a constitutional scholar, do you believe that this is a proper use of federal power? Would it be a requirement to obtain federal aid?”

if obama wrote a note on a paper airplane everyday, and sailed it out of a window to the press to tell us about, it would be better than the bush crew.

I believe it always will ‘fly’, ….. Pres. elect Obama and the country will move on, and be held accountable for their decisions and policies… and with any luck at all, be successful in starting the country back to financial solvency and ‘better times’ for the people…..but..
no one will forget the last 8 years and where Bush & Cheney have brought us.

How about this:
Given the overwhelming repudiation of conservative governance and conservative politics at the polls, what are you going to do about the fact that 90% of the media is owned and programmed by right wingers?

Obama called himself a “mutt” – I would think a lot of people would be offended if they had been called a mutt – it certainly seems derogatory.
I couldn’t imagine calling a mixed race person a mutt – but If the POTUS refers to himself by the term does that make it OK for me to use it as well?

1- Give him the potatoe test?
2- Ask him to release all his records.
3- Ask him if he knows that an Iranain-American student has been arrested in Iran and he what his plans are to get an American citizen out of Iran?
4- Will he give credit to Bush for bringing succes in Iraq so it would be easy for him to withdraw?

Doesn’t matter if Nancy has tried to “contact” Ronnie thru a seance – making a joke of her seeking spiritual connection with a loved one – That’s one demerit point for the ONE.

Are we??

hmmmmm ‘mystical trances’
if we add Larry Craig’s ‘wide stances’
sounds like the beginning of a great Country Tune;
‘mystical trances and wide stances’
could be the new direction for the GOP…

re: ‘Are we??’
