Rahm Mulls Obama WH CoS Offer: Commitment to Public Service Versus Commitment to Family

"I am honored even to be considered, as much as I am honored that the voters of the Northwest Side of the City of Chicago once again chose to re-elect me," Rep. Rahm Emanuel, D-Illinois, told WLS-TV, the ABC News Chicago affiliate today, speaking of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill.., officially offering him the job of White House chief of staff.

"Now, my view is, I have obviously two great opportunities, as you know, before me," Emanuel said. "I have to make a decision about my family. I’ve been in the White House. I used to joke in the White House that on Fridays, I would say: it’s two more workdays till Monday. When I was in the White House, I didn’t have children. I do know something about the White House, and I do have children now. I have a family.

"And so you weigh these—what is the opportunity for your children, and what is the cost?  And then you weigh, obviously, the choice if I have this offer, what do I want to do? And so I know—first of all, I’m honored even to be considered. I’m honored, as a I say, to be re-elected. These are uptown choices. This is not a professional choice. This is a personal choice about what my wife & I want to do for our family, as much as what to do with my career.

"Just so you know, when I chose to run for Congress, I took months to think about it. This is being asked in a few days.

"I got a lot to weigh: my commitment to my country, my commitment to public service and why I got into this, as well as what I want to do as a parent. I’m honored. And I appreciate this. I have a lot to weigh: the basis of public service, which I’ve given my life to, a career choice. And most importantly, what I want to do as a parent. And I know something about the White House. That I assume is one of the reasons that President-elect Obama would like me to serve. But I also know something about what it means to a family."

Tough choice for him to make. He’d be a great choice for chief of staff. It’ll be interesting to see his pick. My bet: he’ll take it (closer to the seat of power than being in the House).

Exactly why Emanuel would be such a good choice – he’s smart, tough, savvy and good-hearted. Precisely because he places such a high value on family life and being a good parent, he would be an excellent Chief of Staff to the president. It’s not all about ambition or money for him. His values are rooted in commitment to public service and what is best for his family. How refreshing after 8 years of the Bush/Cheney/Rove posse.

Though decision to make, but as I see it, his love for his family is weighing more and seems to be more important than his career at this point, which as he says he knows well. I commend him for the love he shows for his family.

I hope Rahm turns down the job — for his own sake. White House Chief of Staff — that has got to be one of the worst jobs in the world for someone with even half of a life. Obama should hire one of his starry-eyed youthful idealistic campaign staffers to do that job instead. And, when that person burns out or screws up, then he can be replaced with the next starry-eyed youthful idealistic campaign staffer…

Emanuel’s the 4th most powerful Democrat in the House, strict and demanding, even feared, has Israeli connections, and is unquestionably loyal. No wonder Obama wants him.
If Obama is out in four years, then where is Emanuel?
On the other hand, Emanuel might remain in Congress and graduate from House to Senate. And we know what further aspirations senators may have!
I think there is no doubt: Emanuel is ambitious. Has a Chief of Staff ever graduated to the highest office in the land? Hmmm.

Jake, did you see the report on the O’Reilly Factor about Palin?
McCain aides have now given some details about her ignorance, such as:
- Palin thought that Africa is a country and didn’t understand it is a continent
- Palin had no clue which countries are in NAFTA
Plus, she even spent a LOT more on clothes, plus 40,000 for Todd, than was addressed in the original scandal.

Posted by: monk | November 5, 2008, 10:37 pm 10:37 pm

Jake, Palin’s shopping spree at high-end department stores was more extensive than previously reported.
NEWSWEEK writes that while publicly supporting Palin, McCain’s top advisers privately fumed at what they regarded as her outrageous profligacy. One senior aide said that Nicolle Wallace had told Palin to buy three suits for the convention and hire a stylist. But instead, the vice presidential nominee began buying for herself and her family—clothes and accessories from top stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus.
According to two knowledgeable sources, a vast majority of the clothes were bought by a wealthy donor, who was shocked when he got the bill. Palin also used low-level staffers to buy some of the clothes on their credit cards. The McCain campaign found out last week when the aides sought reimbursement.
One aide estimated that she spent “tens of thousands” more than the reported $150,000, and that $20,000 to $40,000 went to buy clothes for her husband. Some articles of clothing have apparently been lost.
An angry aide characterized the shopping spree as “Wasilla hillbillies looting Neiman Marcus from coast to coast,” and said the truth will eventually come out when the Republican Party audits its books.

We are witnessing some play-acting by Emanuel and the Obama team. Here’s what probably actually happening here: Emanuel has already accepted the CoS job. However, Emanuel didn’t want to appear to the voters in his congressional district to be abandoning them just one day after they had re-elected him. So Emanuel asked the Obama team to publicize the job offer but not his acceptance of it. Emanuel can now pretend to be mulling it over, and then announce within the next few days that he has accepted the job. The interim allows his constituents a little time to get used to the prospect of losing him as their representative. I can’t think any other explanation for the apparently bizarre act of publicizing a job offer prior to its acceptance. For Emanuel to decline a position that was publicly offered would diminish the Obama mystique, and thus acceptance is inevitable.

I hope he will pass. I’d like to see someone get this job who has a background that stands against H1B exploitation by American labor forces. Standing against H1B *exploitation is almost the same as standing FOR Americans. If they need talent, pay American wages so that Americans can compete on an equal playing field. Currently, H1Bs are cheaper than Americans and quality of ‘value’ is given no consideration.

Never leave an elected position for a direct hire position in the white house, chief of staff is usually the scape goat in most admonistration, seldom do they finish the term.

Why is this such a surprise to Emanuel? Seems to me he’s to indecisive. Is that what we need in a CoS?

Reading a lot of different stories form various sources indicate that last night speech might have been just more hot air as usual. Obama indicated he did not want any retreads but a large number of names being thrown around are form the old Clinton team and old cronies from Chicago.

Emanuel, it’s not time for you to be looking only after you and your family.
It is a dire situation we are in.
You should once again serve the country in White House.

I will be happy to see him anyone capable of getting the mess george bush and co. caused.
it is going to take everybody to get over the last eight years.
i can stand to have obama do whatever it takes to correct the bush mess.
the people of our country were right is voting not to take another chance on a republican this time.
anyone obama choses and anyway they proceed to correct the bush mess, will be fine by me.
my friends,
our national nightmare is almost over.

Bush will still do major damage before he leaves office.
Republicans will do everything they can to leave a ‘scorched earth’ policy before the Dems move in.
Amazingly, while republicans are doing this they will claim that they (Repubs) are being as helpful as they can to the Dems. Repubs will lie to the very end.

funny that Republicans are suddenly so worried about issues now that Obama won…..seems to me all they were concerned about during the campaign was:
- flag lapel pins
- birth certificate
- the pledge hand position
- Ayers
- Wright
- Mrs. Obama’s pride in America
- Muslim
- alleged socialism
- marxist
- communist
- ‘manchurian candidate’
- Khaladi
- race
- celebrity
- journey overseas
- voting ‘present’
- unamerican
very substantial ‘issues’ there.. and your wondering why you lost?

Posted by: Blue | November 6, 2008, 2:07 am 2:07 am

By the way, let’s not forget:
Economically, the Republicans couldn’t manage a fart.
During 6 years of REPUBLICAN power reigning over the White House, Congress and the Senate . . . they rang up RECORD GOVERNMENT DEFICITS and record government debt.
Five hundred billion dollars of deficit each year for four of those years the Republicans held all 3 levels of power!
%500,000,000,000 per year – of government overspending by the Republicans!
The Republicans were GROSS overspenders of the public’s money.
And they had the nerve to call the Democrats tax and spenders. Where did they think the money was going to come from? The moon?

Posted by: pefros | November 6, 2008, 2:47 am 2:47 am

%500,000,000,000 of Republican overspending for 4 of the 6 years – EACH YEAR.
That’s TAXPAYERS money EACH YERR, overspent by Republicans holding White House, Congress and Senate.

Emanuel is not telling the truth. It has nothing to do with family. It has to do with giving up visibility associated with his congressional role. He doesn’t want to take a position where he won’t get credit and won’t be seen. That’s what I read at other news websites. The family story is always a “flag” that a lie will follow.

For Palin Disaster:
Palin being a shopaholic is not something of great concern. E.g. a recent president was a sex addict, acted on his urges during working hours and is still highly respected.
Her lack of general knowledge is unfortunate but then again she is a quick study. I notice that in his acceptance speech, Obama said, “You did it because you understand the enormity of the task that lies ahead.” So the Harvard summa cum laude does not know the meaning of “enormity.”
Maybe there’s a problem with the education system but no one will know because it’s more fun to demonize Republicans.

These are all important issues that should be addressed. 46% of the population didn’t vote for Obama because of these:

Troubling to see the “Rahm Mulls Offer” stories playing on for a couple days now. Worse is the video over at The Page where Rahm talks about the trade off of family vs. career considerations. Don’t you immediately accept (or privately demur)when called to service by a president, especially this president-elect with his call to service message at this time when the country needs the best and brightest to straighten out the financial and foreign policy messes we are in. Decide already Rahm or step out of the way!

Posted by: Steve | November 6, 2008, 8:37 am 8:37 am

As a Chicagoan, I would like to see Emmanuel stay in the House where he is needed to get Obama’s agenda through, raise money for the 2010 and 2012 DCCC races and support Illinois to the Olympics.
His long-term political future will be made in the House.
He also deserves a happy personal life.
One can certainly understand why Obama wants him running the White House and why he would be tempted to help his friend despite personal cost.

To Brad Brzezinski | Nov 6, 2008 8:31:48 AM: Enormity (as defined on merriam-webster online)3: the quality or state of being huge : immensity 4: a quality of momentous importance or impact
I believe President Obama knew exactly what he meant when he said Enormity.

TINA – You forgot the most important one. The life on an unborn child. Christians who voted for him now have the blood of the unborn on their hands.

Terri – so let me get this straight. Because Obama is the President elect we aren’t supposed to ask any questions? Seriously, he is NOT a messiah. He is NOT a god. In fact, don’t get upset, but he is JUST A FREAKING HUMAN.
Some of us will question everything he does – as it should be. As it has been done for the last 20 years. Deal with it

Posted by: Doris | November 6, 2008, 9:49 am 9:49 am

I also see nothing wrong with questioning what our president does, but where were all of you ######## when George Bush was president? Where were all of you standing when he made all his critics out to be terrorists? Where were all of you when criticism about this ill begotten war was deemed unpatriotic? Sneering.
Hope we can work together in the future, but all of you Republicans have to understand that calling the current president a “Messiah” solves nothing.

Posted by: RCE | November 6, 2008, 10:30 am 10:30 am

Errr…Isn’t it unpatriotic to criticize our president?
Get used to being in the minority.

Posted by: Stuart M. | November 6, 2008, 10:34 am 10:34 am

It’s ironic how Obama is labeled “The Messiah” by Republicans when they have been worshipping George W. Bush for so long. Have they not taken a look at the President they nominated for twice? The one who felt the War in Iraq is actually
“GOD’S WILL!”
Wake up people. George Bush was the one on the messianic mission for eight years. It will be nice to have someone for president who understands the separation between church and state once again.

Posted by: Ross.Carradine | November 6, 2008, 10:36 am 10:36 am

So Rahm Emanuel the Israeli asset will be “in charge” of the WH. That should ensure that President Obama gets unbiased advice on Middle East policy, right?

Posted by: monica | November 6, 2008, 10:41 am 10:41 am

RCE – where was I? I was wondering what in the heck Bush was doing! I am not a “blind” follower of any party. I do not accept any politicians word at face value. I KNOW they will lie.
If any of the obama worshipers were honest, they’d see that Bush was NOT worshiped. People are treating obama like he is a god. I shudder to think how they are going to react when he fails to give them everything he’s promised.

Posted by: Doris | November 6, 2008, 10:46 am 10:46 am

matteroffacts – it never ceases to amaze me how some people believe that President Bush would pass something just to “get back at” the democrats.
I’m SURE he’s just sitting there thinking of things he can do that will hurt the USA (yes that is sarcasm) Too bad you all see him as hating the United States and yet someone who isn’t proud of the US and is friends with known terrorists gets a pass….

He did not use “enormity” incorrectly.
Also, I think ” a lack of general knowledge” is a bit more than “unfortunate”. We expect more out of our own children, our own college graduates, prospective employees, etc.; should we not expect more from someone running for high political office?

Posted by: GTFOOH | November 6, 2008, 11:11 am 11:11 am

Rahm should just say “no.” He obviously has reservations. You don’t leave a President hanging. Frankly, Obama ought to withdraw the offer and move on to someone willing to commit 150% when asked.

Posted by: xargaw | November 6, 2008, 11:16 am 11:16 am

Doris too bad u didnt ask enough questions of the idiot who is leaving now. I think Obama is anything but a really exceptional gifted politician. That he is. I dont mind asking questions. Nothing wrong with that at all. They should be fair though. It seems the last guy did not let anyone question him and look what we got. I think Rahm should take the job but I understand the family issue. Thats a big issue with some folks and they should weigh it out. Its a tough job and requires a lot of time away from family. I think he will take it. He is a centrist. Well help Obama keep both extremes in check.

Emanism – I don’t know how you came to the conclusion that “I” didn’t ask questions. But then, I’m not surprised.
I’ll just say.. you know what happens when one “assumes”.
You can blame everything in this world on President Bush if you want. I don’t care. What you CAN NOT do – is tell me tthat “I” have to be an Obama supporter. I do NOT believe he is going to be the “great uniter”. But since this is the GREAT United States of America – I am free to believe that. You are free to believe otherwise.
Some have not given President Bush one ounce of RESPECT – do not for one second believe that we will forget that – EVER.

Posted by: Doris | November 6, 2008, 11:55 am 11:55 am

This shows the quality of the man. The fact he is considering his family and how little time he would be able to spend with his kids, shows he is a balanced human being, not a too-ambitious, self-centered politician.
Whatever jobs he does, I’m sure he is a great public servant.

Posted by: Lydia | November 6, 2008, 12:42 pm 12:42 pm

Obama will have one or two years to get meaningful legislation passed. Already the wolves are regrouping. Economy and trade issues are first, then healthcare and tax restructure. If he succeeds to that extent he will have done more than Bush has done in eight years. Rahm is an enforcer strongman who can defend against the attacks soon to come.
