Richardson a Leading Candidate at Commerce

ABC News has learned that New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson has emerged as a serious contender to be President-elect Obama’s Secretary of Commerce.

The usual caveats apply — nothing has been officially offered, nothing has been accepted, the vetting needs to be completed, the process is not as far along as some of the others jobs being discussed out there such as Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, going to the State Department.

If Richardson ultimately takes a job in the Obama administration, he could be the third former primary opponent that Obama has brought into his Team of Rivals, the other two being Vice President-elect Joe Biden and possible Secretary of State Clinton. The news that Richardson had emerged as a serious contender for Commerce was first broken by Chris Cillizza of the Washington Post.

Richardson — a former United Nations Ambassador and Secretary if Energy during the Clinton administration — provided Obama with a key endorsement in March and it’s not exactly a secret that he’d like a good post in the Obama administration. The State Department seemed his first choice, but that doesn’t look like it’s going to happen.

Do not hold your breath for John Edwards.

He has to give Richardson something for sticking that dagger in Hillary’s back. You don’t really believe that Richardson did that without there being some bribe involved, do you?

That’s great… but how about a name for Secretary of Treasury?!?!?!?

Obama seems to be picking the old clowns from Clinton’s admin… I thought we were going to see CHANGE!!!
Typical politician that he is… he will forget about the campaign promises and taxpayers will get the shaft as usual. Business as usual in DC! Obama is turning out to be just what a lot of us said he was… a no good liar!

CHANGE yes, but not at the expense of experience. HE is the change and WE are the change. He’ll never get anything done with people jumping off the bandwagon even before it begins to move.

You first have to find the best person for the job, that in itself is change to actually seek out the best person that will do the best job for America. Unlike other presidents that just put their friends. Are you telling me that you would prefer Obama to show change by hiring people that are not best suited for the position. I would hate to see you guys try and run a business. Hire people that do not speak english for a call center catering to english speaking persons.

For all those out there saying where’s the change? Why is Obama picking a bunch of Clinton people?
1)Last I checked life was pretty great under Clinton
2)This is definate change over the last 8 years
3)Let him become president and show you all his new policies before you all become Nay-sayers!!

use your brains people. there are a ton of cabinet positions yet to fill, you know there will be a few new-school ‘shockers’. also…its hard not to have at least a few faces from the clinton admin, being its the only demo pool in the last 28 years this dude has to choose from. at least he’s picking the decent ones.

Thats great news. Obama is actually as smart as he sounds. This is about to be the dream team of governments. Can’t wait to see him set new standards while the republicans continue to cry foul play

Posted by: Oscar | November 21, 2008, 3:10 pm 3:10 pm

To now….CHANGE is not always new. Sometimes it takes a wise person to change from the way things are now to the way they were when the country was better off than it is now. Where was all of this same criticism for King George when he hired all of his dad’s cronies to take him down the tubes as well….yeah i know he got re-elected and dad didn’t but don’t put too much credit to his side for that…he was just a better thief of the elections! Give Obama credit for knowing the right people to bring in to accomplish what he wants to accomplish. He was not my first choice for president, but he is a whole better than four more republican years……

Things were better under Clinton than 8 years of Bush……… lets try anything to get the country back on track….. many people here would love to see the country regress because Obama won..
true patriots all…..

Richardson would be an excellent choice for Commerce. He’s an experienced leader, has been a good Governor of New Mexico, and adds even more diversity to the Obama cabinet. What’s interesting is that he may be replaced by Val Kilmer, who has expressed an interest in running for the New Mexico governorship.

In case some missed the 90′s, I can tell you that Obama is selecting a winning team by naming members of the Clinton team to his Administration.

This is change, a change from the disaster that constitutes the current administration. With our economy in turmoil, two wars, an ongoing energy crisis, a world climate under threat, our medical system in tatters and our constitution being undermined we really need people with talent and experience. If Obama does not draw from the (successful) Clinton administration and some of the unsuccessful Presidential candidates he has to go back to the Carter administration to find people with experience. This is not realistic given their ages and the vast changes we have seen since then. Obama is following Lincoln’s footsteps and suurounding himself with strong, intelligent and experienced people who are willing and able to question his decisions and offer alternaives. Now that’s a real change from Bush is it not?

Posted by: Cataplasm | November 21, 2008, 3:24 pm 3:24 pm

Bill Richardson, a man who can speak three languages, a proven negotiator and deal maker can do better than run of the mill cabinet position in the Obama administration.
Richardson has delivered economic progress and jobs and the people of New Mexico have rewarded him with two terms. Richardson should finish out his Governor’s term and tell the Obama transition team, I have been there and done that, and seriously purse a CEO position in the private sector.

Our Greatest Leader is making a plea for a game in 2016, while he is “voting” present for the current economic meltdown.
If you had failed to understand what his voting record of present meant in Illinois, this is what it means to America now.
“I think … sort of the bottom feels like it is falling out for many people,” said Gergen, who has advised four presidents. “They sense there’s a total lack of leadership in Washington, that the White House is silent, the treasury secretary has been battered, the Federal Reserve can’t speak up. These automakers come up to Capitol Hill and fail. And the president-elect is silent in Chicago.”
Asked if Obama was offering guidance on the issue, Durbin replied, “No, no.”
Yet, our Greatest Leader was busy spreading rumors and feeling waters for his old family friend Pritzker for the Secretary of DoC, only failed and tanked the stock market by 900 and more than 11% in two days. And now Richardson? A payback time?
What a “change” and Greatest Leader we are witnessing.
Don’t say it’s all the stupid George Bush’s fault. He is a duck, and there is a need for new direction.
Where is the leadership of our Greatest Leaders, other than “present”?

Posted by: fat cat | November 21, 2008, 4:27 pm 4:27 pm

With our economy in such bad shape, I would have thought Obama would have selected someone with real business and/or economic expertise. Richardson has no qualifications in commerce. He isn’t even a very bright person. What did he ever do when he was energy secretary? Nothing. He couldn’t even handle Monica Lewinsky. This is a disapointment.

Guess you know who your real friends were right Bill until you turned on them and whined and complained about Bill C, the man who gave you an important job in his administration.

Posted by: rachel | November 21, 2008, 4:42 pm 4:42 pm

Bill Richardson is a joke. First and foremost, he is completely unqualified for the position of Sec. of Commerce–which is frightening given the state of our economy. Secondly, his track record in general is pathetic. Just look at his lack of accomplishments as Sec. of Energy. Morevoer, as Gov. of NM, the state has regressed and is worse off in virtually every key economic, social and educational area after being under Richardson’s administration. Lastly, let’s not forget all skeletons he has in his closet with his many “extra-curricular” sexual exploits. It appears that Obama’s administration is selecting him primarily because of his part-Latino background, yet, the Latino community by and large was not supportive of Richardson as a leader of this country–not surprising given Richardson is a good o’le boy who only pulls his “I’m Latino” card when he’s trying to advance his political career. What in the world is Obama administration thinking?

Posted by: Latino voice | November 21, 2008, 4:56 pm 4:56 pm

I agree, Richardson is not qualified to be Sec of Commerce. He majored in French and Political Science at Tufts Univ. and is a political crony.

Posted by: charles NJ | November 21, 2008, 5:13 pm 5:13 pm

You know fat cat, Obama is not the president. George Bush is the president. One president at a time is all we get even if, as you say, he is a “duck”. So until January 20, who is in the position of leader? I think you know who.

Posted by: George | November 21, 2008, 5:28 pm 5:28 pm

Richardson is obviously the best choice for secretary of state. Hillary knows nothing and she is a fake. Why would she even consider working with Obama after saying he was naive, inexperienced and everything else she said?
Richardson is going to be great wherever you put him.
2 term governor, nominated to the Nobel Peace Prize, UN ambassador, sec of energy, congressman, obviously the best candidate for everything.

Posted by: josh | November 21, 2008, 5:45 pm 5:45 pm

Either Richardson, Clinton or Kerry would have been fine choices for Secretary of State. I actually prefer Clinton and Kerry to stay in the Senate and Richardson as Secretary of State where he has qualifications. The Senate should by-pass their sexism rules and provide HRC with a chairmanship leading Health Care, something where she is qualified.
Richardson is not qualified for Commerce Secretary and would be a horrible choice. If you are not going to place him at State, he should be Labor Secretary.
Times are too important to place Richardson as Commerce Secretary.

Bill Richardson didn’t stab Hillary in the back – he took the knife and went for her jugular.

Posted by: young_voter | November 21, 2008, 10:24 pm 10:24 pm

Beware America! This carpet bagger will do ANYTHING to advance his political career. He moved to New Mexico because he thought he stood a better chance of being elected to Congress. He stabbed Clinton in my back after determining that Obama would win the Democratic nomination. He goes after anyone that disagrees with him or stands in his way. He ensures that friends and political contributors get state contracts. While all of his tactics have paid off, I have no idea how he sleeps at night. I hope he stays in Washington for good this time. The people of New Mexico deserve better.

Posted by: John | November 22, 2008, 2:22 am 2:22 am

John, you sound like a bitter and typical Clinton supporters who blames Richardson for her own failure to win the democratic nomination.
I doubt that Richardson endorsement made any difference to the voters whether it was Clinton or Obama endorsement. Really… Let’s give Obama some credit.
What is ironic is your criticism of Richardson is exactly the same criticism the people of WNY have of their Senator Clinton, a carpetbagger who moved to NY to help her career, who promised the people of Upstate NY 200,000 new jobs but failed to deliver. Ask anyone in WNY if Senator Clinton been effective in job creation.
The real difference among Senator Clinton is Bill Richardson has delivered high-tech job creation for the people of New Mexico. Ask the New York transplants in Rio Rancho, New Mexico.
Matter of fact, the former Senior Republican Senator Pete Domenici stated that Bill Richardson has done more for New Mexico than any other Governor in recent history. The voters of New Mexico will not give non-performer a second term, especially if a democrat.
With the Obama endorsement, Richardson proved that he is his own man and not a Bill Clinton minion. Also note as head of the DOE, he streamlined and improved operations, negotiate low oil cost with OPEC and took on the embedded cultural problems of LANL.
Richardson’s international achievements as a Congressman makes most Senators look lame, speaks three languages and can negotiate.
Lastly, Richardson now has been vetted by two administrations and has a security clearance which speaks volumes.

Posted by: threeriverscrossing | November 22, 2008, 3:45 am 3:45 am

The only good thing about Richardson getting a cabinet job is that he will be gone from New Mexico! Please take him away.. We don’t need a political brown-noser, Native American hating, hispanic wanna-be as a Governor anymore. Maybe he will build some horse racing casino’s at the US capital and call it commerce…Or lay to waste the tribal lands with radioactive mining to complete the genocide of the Navajo nation.

Posted by: nuts for obama | November 22, 2008, 2:47 pm 2:47 pm

I think that Hillary made a deal with Obama that she would support him in the election if he would make her Sec. of State. Of course, if Obama doesn’t like the job Hillary is doing then it’s “bye bye Hillary”. And she will have given up her senate seat…maybe this is Obamas way of getting rid of his enemies?

Posted by: Dave | November 22, 2008, 3:05 pm 3:05 pm

Change? It’s coming. There are only so many qualified candidates to choose from, for the cabinet. Sure they’re all old Clintonites, but they’ll be working to push Obamas agenda…and that is where the change comes in.

Posted by: Horse | November 22, 2008, 3:08 pm 3:08 pm

This is so funny. Obama talked about change and what do we get? The same of people that he claimed were not good for American. 30 out of the 40 people Obama selected are from Clinton’s old team. Did he not learned from G. Bush? Remember, G. Bush picked most of his father’s old team.
I did not voted for Obama but I am glad he will not be running the country and will be turning it over to the Clinton to run.

To threeriverscrossing:
What makes you think I am Clinton supporter? She’s a carpet bagger too and deserves a one-way ticket back to Arkansas.
My disdain for Richardson comes from watching him continually use New Mexico to advance his political career. You’re crazy if you think he’ll say no to Obama. Richardson packed his bags and made airline reservations before Obama’s victory speech.

What’s the beef? You want Obama to pick people with zero experience? If a person has experience, it was either with Bush, Clinton, Bush or Reagan.
See the pattern there?

As a resident of NM, I feel richardson has done alot for us. He helped get the railrunner, lottery scholarship, and increase in minimum wage. He was requested by north korea for negotiations. In 2006, Forbes credited Richardson’s reforms in naming Albuquerque, New Mexico the best city in the U.S. for business and careers. The Cato Institute, meanwhile, has consistently rated Richardson as one of the most fiscally responsible Democratic governors in the nation.

Posted by: zeke | November 23, 2008, 6:08 pm 6:08 pm

Instead of bashing people why don’t you all come up with new faces. Obama talked about change from Republicans last 8 years not about Reagon’s time or Carter or even Clintons. You got a new face and a war hero and that wasn’t good enought. Do your talking before it’s too late not after Obama won by landslide and favored around the world. This is proof, CLEAR PROOF, that some people are just plain losers. Even McCain said Americans deslike sore losers. Either support Obama or keep ranting as it will not make one bit of difference. You get to vote again in 4 years and maybe next time you’ll show up to the polls. CHANGE FROM LAST 8 YEARS not from 16 years ago. Keep ignorant these miserable people or tell the we see change and they can stay in denial if they wish.

Posted by: zorra | November 23, 2008, 6:49 pm 6:49 pm

Bill Richardson is a good honest man.
I read so many negative slurs and am not at all surprised. You Republicans will now moan and groan and gripe about ANYONE Obama chooses to join his cabinet and that is expected. Wait a few more years, the backlash is only beginning against the neocon disaster of the last eight years. Change? You bet just try to contain yourselves. America has spoken again and you lost again. That’s life right?

Posted by: Greg | November 24, 2008, 2:34 am 2:34 am

Cato might call him one of the most fiscally responsible, but that isn’t saying much.
Richardson ran around the state acting like Santa Claus in order to gain attention for his presidential bid. The bills (no pun intended) are starting to come due. We’ve just been asked to pay higher taxes to fund operation of the Rail Runner. You would think that operating costs would have been worked out before building the damn thing. New Mexico doesn’t need a commuter train, we need better schools and healthcare.
Bully Bill benefited from higher than expected revenue from gas and oil during his tenure. Instead of saving that money, he went hog wild investing taxpayer money in private businesses and sponsoring a float in the Rose Bowl Parade. Guess who rode on the float? New Mexico is now faciling $500 million + budget shortfall. Yeah, that’s fiscally responsbile. Give me a break.
He can’t leave soon enough. And I hope he takes all of his politcal cronies to Washington. I’m looking forward to a Diane Denish adminstration.
