Ruh-Roh: Is Barney’s Bite Worse Than His Bark?

ABC News’ Jennifer Duck Reports: Barney, one of two of the president’s Scottish terriers, bit a reporter Thursday.

Barney has a history of biting.  On West Wing White House tours, visitors are not permitted in the Rose Garden if Barney is outside because he has bitten visitors in the past.

The victim Thursday was Jon Decker who works for Reuters TV.  Decker asked the dog handler if he could pet Barney and after he received the go-ahead, Barney snapped and broke skin on Decker’s finger.

First Lady Laura Bush’s spokeswoman Sally McDonough confirmed this afternoon that Barney did in fact snap at the Reuters reporter.

"Mr. Decker and other members of the press were taking pictures of Barney while he was out for his walk. And, as veteran White House reporter April Ryan—who captured the snap on her video phone—was overheard saying, ‘this is very unlike Barney,’" said McDonough. "I think it was his way of saying he was done with the paparazzi. I’ve talked to Jon and he is being a good sport about it all. Mrs. Bush is aware and asked that I call Jon to make sure all is well."

Decker is reportedly fine after seeing the White House doctor, although his finger is still bleeding.

President-elect Barack Obama’s daughters Sasha and Malia have been promised a dog when they move into the White House.  Scottish terriers may be lower on the list now.

I’m not surprised. Rotten people tend to get along with each other. Which explains why this dog gets along so well with its owners, and no one else.

Don’t worry guys. If the Obama’s dog does anything that dogs usually do, the media elite will never report it. As of Jan. 20, only good news will emanate from the White House.

Speaking of “evil miasma,” just wait until the new Prez welcomes Bill Ayers and Rev. Wright to the White House state dinners.

That’s why the Obama kids need to get a mixed-breed shelter puppy. Pedigreed dogs are much more temperamental. Too much inbreeding.

You must first consider the breed and then consider whether the reporter bent over the dog instead of coming down to his level. So, Barney was probably intimidated. You don’t offer an extended hand to a dog, you close your hand and offer the back for a “sniff” while speaking softly.

Thats funny. Barney is just as hateful and foul as his owner. He treats reporters like Bush treats fellow world leaders.
My dog Smooches barks and growls everytime she see’s Bush and Cheney on TV. She hates them about as much as the american public, and the rest of the world.
But I told her a new day has come, and America will once again become the beloved country we used to be. Then she rolled over and had me rub her belly.
It feels good,to be an Obama Voter.

Clueless reporter who knows nothing about animals. Just looking at Barney you could tell the animal was stressed particularly with his ears back. You go sticking your hands in an animal in that conditions face you gonna git bit.

Around my area in California, if a dog bites more than one person, it’s labeled a vicious animal and destroyed. Of course, I also believe Bush should be treated the same way.

Scotties are a breed of dog notoriously known NOT to tolerte anyone other than their owners, be they Democrat, Republican or reporter.

Posted by: Robin | November 6, 2008, 6:48 pm 6:48 pm

“Dogs can sense which people are evil”
so, since he has bitten members of the general public visiting the white house, I guess he senses that common American citizens are evil?
Maybe that explains why Bush wants to wage war of the entire world.

Posted by: JR | November 6, 2008, 6:48 pm 6:48 pm

I don’t like Bush, but I DO like his dogs – and I think people would bite paparazzi if they could, too! Moral of the story – OFFER your hand to a dog – if he wants to be petted, he’ll let you. Don’t ever force a dog to be petted. I wouldn’t like it and neither would you.

Whoa! That was wierd I mean Barney attacking a person working for Reuters TV! Wow… What I would suggest is a golden retriever.

Posted by: Skylar Fang | November 6, 2008, 7:05 pm 7:05 pm

I wouldn’t exactly blame the poor dog. I’m sure the reporter meant no harm, but Barney didn’t know that. He was in fact approached the wrong way. The reporter just went straight in from the pup’s blind spot, not much of an introduction. Then, all of a sudden, for all he knows, “something” is ATTACKING him from the said blindspot. The dog just reacted to a potential threat…pure instinct.
On another note, why are so many “Obamites” acting so spiteful and immature??? It doesn’t matter if some “Evil Republicans” are acting bitter, or have acted so in the past. LET IT GO! MOVE ON. Yes, you should most definitely be proud of your victory, but QUIT ACTING LIKE ASSES. It screws it up for the rest of us.
Just remember, these POLITICIANS are NOT PERFECT. Don’t get me wrong, I voted for Obama as well. However, I still know that the road is indeed long ahead and will be full of bumps and distractions and things that must be dealt with; that even the most crafty and intelligent person would have a hard time dealing. None of “this” is going to just disappear overnight, just because we have a different President. So, please, do give Obama your blessing. It cannot be an easy job, even for, or rather ESPECIALLY for Bush. NO, I don’t like W’s politics, but I don’t truly believe the man is completely evil. In fact, I imagine he is over all a pretty decent human being…but he’s still a HUMAN being. Remember that this human experience involves having an “id, ego and super-ego” (forgive the “Freudianism”) What I mean, though, is that NO ONE is perfect and there are many factors which “make” us.
So, yes, I have all the hope in the world for Obama, and this particular election restored my faith in the American Electoral process, but I am realistic enough to know that Obama is only going to do what he can, given the constraints of his humanness and a bipartisan (and sometimes even more split it seems) system of government.
So, PLEASE, people, act kindly to each other; because you never know who might just affect whom in the days that lie ahead. Cheers to all…

Wow, Bush sure know how to make decisions. A dog that bites people and a VP that shoots people.

Posted by: ABCNEWSFAN | November 6, 2008, 7:07 pm 7:07 pm

The real question is why did the reporter feel free to reach out toward the dog when it gave no sign it was interested? Would that same reporter have reached out to touch one of the Bush’s? I think not. I didn’t see anything in the report about the reporter taking responsibility for imposing himself on an unfamiliar dog. Great video to teach kids how NOT to approach a dog!

Sounds like Barney needs a session with Cesar Millan. Terriers can be very protective, some breeds more than others, but they are so much fun and can be well trained. I love my Westie.

Posted by: rbrgood | November 6, 2008, 7:11 pm 7:11 pm

I grew up with Scotties and they don’t really like being around a lot of people. he was prob. scared. They aren’t very good with small children either, and do much better in smaller families. They are great dogs though for an older couple or a couple with older kids. We had my Scottie for 16 years and he didn’t always get a long with me since I was 6 when we got him. He was very loyal to my parents though.
I’m guessing Barney was just nervous. The handler never should have let the reporter get close.

I’m happy Obama won, but from these comments here I have to say so many who voted for him apparently are examples of childish spite. You guys would turn on Obama like an enraged Doberman if he made a mistake once.
Now that Obama is in, please let go of the hate. Let W go in peace.

If you want a dog to like you..a dog treat is the way to his heart. If you want him to bite you, try to pet him coming from the top. Anyone who knows dogs knows a dog sees this as an attack.

I have two scottish terriers and they are simply agressive dogs. Scotties are by nature more aggresive than pit bulls, and rotweilers. I am surprised that they would let someone who is not familiar with Barney pet him. I know I have to hold my dog when she is introduced to someone new just to make sure no one gets hurt unintentionally.

Posted by: Kayla | November 6, 2008, 7:33 pm 7:33 pm

I’ve a scottie and I have had two others. he approached Barney the wrong way you go gently and wait for them to sniff you. He should know that since he said his mother had a scottie. They’re tough dogs. My first one
Lucy bit me and then one my sons–she had a strong reaction to being looked at eye to eye it was danger to her and she defended herself. My new scottie Sasha is nicknamed Lovebug because she’s so lovable and kisses you but she’s a dog and I hold her on a tight leash on the street–you never know. The reporter should have known better.

We’ve had three scotties — two currently living. Other than our youngest, who is somewhat timid and we wouldn’t trust to let strangers pet unless they’ve taken some time to get to know him, they are wonderful pets. All of them have been great with children if introduced slowly. Our eight-year old female scottie won’t sleep in our bedroom, but has to sleep with my five-year old granddaugher when she stays here. They are extremely loyal and loving dogs. They are very protective of their owners if they think there is a threat from other dogs.

Posted by: scottielover | November 6, 2008, 7:46 pm 7:46 pm

It’s a dog. I hate dogs, mostly because their owners don’t bother to train them. Most dogs can be very good pets, but they are paired with very bad owners. When that happens, you get bad dogs – biters, barkers and other annoying things dogs do naturally. It’s up to the owner to keep them quiet and under control. If they are incapable of doing so, they should put the animal down or give them to someone who can keep it under control.
This is a comment about dogs in general and dog owners in particular, but implies nothing more than that. It’s not a political statement. It’s merely an observation about dogs and their owners I’ve seen over the years.
Another observation I have is that some people take their politics WAY too seriously.

I can’t believe how disrespectful people can be towards a person leading the country. I don’t think Bush is evil and he certainly deserves respect for at least the way he handled 9/11 and the first four years of his presidency. He has made mistakes. We all do. I voted for Obama, but I still think anyone running our country deserves respect and well-wishes.
Dogs are dogs, not people. They aren ‘t Democrats or Republicans.

bit off the entire lower lip of my best friend. She knew him for 10 years but

To the reporter his punishment is his silly little band-aid and antibiotics–God knows what this dainty fellow would do if he ever was in a real scrape.

What could one expect? Barney wasn’t even wagging his tail. The reporter invaded his space.

to All you Bloggers: Before some of you judge or make comments you should read up on Scotties. I have 2 scotties and they both have different personalitys. The older one is very serious and she prefers to stay away from strangers and children, but with babys she is very protective and sits near them. She is not cuddly but she is not happy with us when we leave her for vacation. Our younger scottie is playful, loving, gives lots of kisses and loves people and children. Scotties are very entertaining. Each one always has different traits from beening serious, Nosey( they do nose around into any project you start or into something new and unsual), curiousity, stubborn or playful. They also are known to be very sensitive, one of ours literally POUTS when in trouble. They have very funny expressions and they express themselves when they want something. Anyone who meets my dogs love them and find them very funny.
Of course, we all know that the reporter had the wrong approach. Barneys ears were laid back and that tells you dont mess with me. My serious scottie reacts that way when she does not want to be bothered. Scotties are NOT NOTORIOUS for biting. Look it up!!!
Scotties ARE NOTORIOUS for being stubborn, curious, nosey, serious, willful, playful, loving, and sweet. You cannot guarantee that a scottie will be full of kisses, and cuddly.
They r not friendly with other dogs unless its a another scottie.
So what have we learned:
1. Don’t approach a scottie or any dog like the reporter did.
2. Scotties are wonderful! they need lots of attention, love and training.
3. LOOK SCOTTIES UP!! You will funny and adoring info on them.
And please put your political comments aside. Those of you who talk bad about scotties have no right to because you have no experience with them.
P.S Our scotties go to the same groomer as barney and miss. beasley.

Posted by: ScottieLover | November 7, 2008, 11:17 am 11:17 am

Scotties are amazing animals. AND they do not represent any political party. Just because Bush owns two scotties that does not mean that you should bad mouth the breed.
I urge all you readers to step out of your egocentric worlds and meet a scottie. They will reveal to you a world of loving, playful, nosey, stubborn, and happy dogs. Just because one stupid reporter stuck his hand near an unhappy Barney does not mean that Barney is bad. He just reacted the way many of you would have in his position. Example: If you hate teasing, and someone just pushes you too far – how do you react? Well Barney responded like any other dog [as sometimes humans].
Have a heart! Go look up Scotties! You will see a different picture than the stupid media presents.
