The Boss Pays Tribute to ‘The One’
In addition to his gorgeous singing and strumming, Bruce Springsteen paid homage to Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., this evening to a crowd of roughly 80,000 in downtown Cleveland.
Following is what we were able to make out in a sincere but occasionally mumbly homage to Obama, whom the McCain campaign derisively refers to on occasion as "The One."
If you were able to better pick up the Bard of New Jersey’s remarks, please let us know and we will update.
"It’s an honor to be here with Senator Obama, I want to thank him for inviting me. I’ve spent 35 years writing about America and its people, what it means to be an American, which I do (mumble) responsibilities – one of the reasonable expectations when we live in a free society. I really never saw myself as a partisan (inaudible) or a set of ideas. Economic and social justice. America as a positive influence around the world. Truth, transparency and integrity in government. A right of every American to have a job, a living wage, to be educated in a decent school. And to allow (inaudible) with the dignity to work (inaudible) from the sanctity of home. And I think are the things we think of on the deepest level when we think about our freedoms.
"But (inaudible) ‘cause they’ve been damaged by eight years of a thoughtless, reckless and morally adrift administration. But we’re at a crossroads today. I’ve spent most of my life as a musician measuring the distance in my music between the American dream and American reality. When I look around today, many Americans are today losing their jobs, and their homes, or seeing their retirement funds disappear, and don’t have healthcare, who have been abandoned in our inner cities. The distance between that dream and that reality has grown greater and more painful than ever. I believe Senator Obama has taken the measure of that distance in his own life and in his own work. And I believe he understands, in his heart, the cost of that distance, in blood and in suffering, in the lives of everyday Americans. I believe as president, he’ll work to bring that promise back to life, in many of the lives of our fellow Americans who have justifiably lost faith in its meaning.
"Now In my job, I travel the world, and I occasionally play big stadiums and crowds like this, just like Senator Obama does. And I’ve continued to find, wherever I go, America remains a repository for people’s hopes and desires, and remains a house of dreams. And a thousand George Bushes and one thousand Dick Cheneys will never be able to tear that house down!
"That’s something that only we can do and we’re not gonna let that happen. This administration will be leaving office – that’s good news. The bad news is they’re going to be dumping in our laps the national tragedies of Katrina, Iraq, and our financial crisis. Our house of dreams has been abused, it’s been looted, and it’s been left in a terrible state of disrepair. It needs (affinity?), it needs someone who’s gonna sell it down the river for power, for influence, for a quick buck. It needs strong arms, strong hearts, strong minds. It needs someone with Senator Obama’s understanding, his temperateness, his deliberativeness, his maturity, his pragmatism, his toughness, and his faith.
"But most of all, it needs us, it needs you and it needs me. (inaudible) (inaudible) that keeps it from coming apart is the social promise between us, and (inaudible). It resides in our connection with one another in honoring the life and the hopes and the dreams of a man and a woman up the street and across town. That’s where we make that small claim upon (inaudible).
"And on recent years that social contract’s been shredded, and when you look around today you can see it shredding before our eyes. But tonight and today here we are at a crossroads. We are at a crossroads. And it’s a long, long time coming. I’m honored to be here on the same stage as Senator Obama. From the beginning there’s been something that Senator Obama has called upon our better angels, and I suspect he’s (inaudible) ‘cause he’s had to so often had to call on his better angels.
"And we’re going to need all the angels we can get on the hard road ahead. So Senator Obama help us rebuild our house (cheers) big enough for the dreams of all our citizens. It’s how we’ll accomplish this task (inaudible) what it means to be an American in the new century, what the stakes are and what it means to live in a free society. So I don’t’ know about you, but I want my country back, I want my dream back, I want my America back! Now is the time to stand with Barack Obama and Joe Biden, roll up our sleeves, and come our sleeves, and come on up for the rising."

Does anyone really listen to Springsteen anymore? I don’t think Obama’s crowd was that into it, they are usually used to Stevie Wonder music. Maybe Bruce was selling CD’s at the back entrance. Obama camp is big on providing free concerts for crowds.
NEVER Barack Hussein Obama!

WHY would you wan tot write word for word what he said? Are you trying to insult him by calling what you couldn’t hear mumblings?
What a jerk you are at times, Tapper.
That is “The Boss” – Born in the USA -Boss! Now mumble on that, Jake.
I love Bruce – but not so much Jake Tapper.

Coal states, Obama will bankrupt, Obama speech, San Francisco, January 17, 2008, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Colorado, Indiana, Voters, Energy dependence, Job losses, Obama elitist remarks
If you are a voter in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Colorado, Indiana
or anywhere in the US, pay close attention. People clinging to guns and
religion was not the only elitist remark Obama made in San Francisco.
On January 17, 2008, in a San Francisco interview, in another remark
taylored to his elitist followers, Obama stated he would bankrupt the
coal industry. This time, his remarks are not just insulting, they will
lead to more energy dependence and job losses. Once again, in Obama’s own words, he proves how dangerous he would be for the country.

“his gorgeous singing and strumming”
There was a guy (the name Robert Hilburn springs to mind) who wrote for the LA Times many years back who was taken heart and soul by the “Boss”. This guy effused over Springstein for decades like no one else. But I never heard him go so far as to call Springstein’s singing and strumming “gorgeous”. Yikes!

For those of you who dont get it – including Jake Tapper, let me explain what Bruce said. He said that the American people are far, far to the left of Obama, but he has to operate in the realm of political possibility in a corrupt system. Therefore, it is our duty as citizens to put pressure on him to focus policy on meeting the needs of the people. It is going to take a real movement to turn this country around, its not going to happen from the top.

Bruce Springsteen’s words are very meaningful to me.
I want my country back, I want my dream back, I want my America back!
Obama’s speech asked for people making less than one quarter of a million dollars to raise their hand. Obama was joking with Springsteen about raising his hand.

MIguy, Yes – And they have all been trivia and snarky and biased. We’re back to snarky, nasty comments like “The One.” I kind of liked it when you were mad about the Palin pick and did some balanced reporting on the Presidential election. I have a great idea! You did about 90 pieces on Rev Wright – why don’t you do one or two on Sarah Palin, the spiritual warriors she hangs with, and how they feel about Catholics and Jews (we are all the anti-Christ). It’s a little tough to see my 94 year-old mother as the anti-Christ, but those spiritual warriors, can swallow anything. Including wars for Jesus.
Meanwhile. in the real world, some sites are reporting on things that matter in this election. Like our children’s lives.

Julie – I agree. It’s not some big snarky joke unless you’ve got some serious family money behind you and don’t have to worry about your kids future. It’s a serious election and it should be treated like one. I want my country back, too.

The word, “hero”, is tossed around a bit too easily these days. Nothing against Mr. Sprinsgsteen but he is no more a hero than a star baseball player (years ago when an athlete or entertainer was called a hero it was because he served in our armed forces and carried out a truly heroic act in a theater of war.)
I could name a hero for you, but you’ll see the name soon enough. On Tuesday when you go to cast your vote for President his name will be right in front of you. If you voted already then you saw the name and it is NOT McSame. I think 5 and half years in that Hanoi hellhole has earned Senator McCain at least that much.

Was Springsteen acoustic? He is so awful when he does acoustic. If you ever see him in concert, you’ll enjoy the electric songs with the band but when goes to grab that acoustc guitar? It’s time to head to the concession stands.
Putting that little music critique aside, oh my goodness how many votes will he lose the Democrat candidate this time around? What long-winded dribble that comes out in his monlogue! The guy is like the kiss of death for a candidate. He did an almost full tilt tour for Kerry four years ago and I could swear President Bush’s numbers got better after each show.
As a McCain supporter I am hoping he will be doing one more show for “the one” tomorrow. “C’mon, Boss, whaddya say?”

I am so sick of the Republicans bringing up the “clinging to guns and religion” thing. I listened to that whole commentary and what I took away from that speech was that when people are struggling just trying to make a living and when they are discouraged they tend to turn to the things that bring them comfort whether it be their faith or their pastimes such as hunting. In the context that remark was presented by Obama it was not meant to be degrading. But leave it to the Republicans to blow it all out of proportion in order to get people to not pay attention to the real problem …the economy. As usual the Rebuplicans always want to distract the people and have them vote against their own economic self interests. Remember the big gay marriage issue in 2004. You may not have a job in 2008 but thank God those gays can’t marry. Looking back what was nmore important.. the direction our country was headed under George Bush or the gays.
As for the economy I disagree with the idea that wealth trickles down. I believe wealth comes from the bottom up. It is we the workers who have pride in what we do and who put our backs into our jobs that makes a business prosperous. That enables the businesses to grow and make money which in turn creates profits allowing for new businesses to come into the cycle.
Ronald Reagan’s “Trickle Down Economice” (which John McCain seems so fond of) always sounded like a medieval fuedal system with kings at the top and serfs at the bottom.

Springsteen hit the nail on the head… perfectly summed up the Constitution-hating, morally reprehensible adminstration of the Evangelical Confederacy that has hijacked America for the past 8 years.
Springsteen’s eloquence matches that of our founding fathers… read his words next to the Preamble to the Constitution and you can see how perfectly the words and thoughts align.
Thank you Bruce for reminding us of what America stands for. And for supporting the only candidate who can bring America back to its Constitution.

You are right, the word hero is tossed around much too easily, and McSame — like most Vietnam Vets, is no hero. Merely someone doing his job.
And certainly his status as a former POW does not qualify him for President. Given that we’ve seen little else during this election that WOULD qualify Senator McSame for the office, he will deservedly go down in defeat on November 4th, and return to the Senate for at least another two years.
President Obama. Get used to it.

BKMC,
One other thing that I’d like to remind you is that John McCain will need to stand down and support Obama once Obama is elected, and he will because the man has dignity. McCain is an authentic hero, and the fact that George Bush destroyed America and McCain is paying the price for it doesn’t make McCain less of a hero. If you want to keep hurling insults his direction after the election please feel free to do so in America, but at that point it will lack dignity to do so. I saw you do the same thing against Hillary and I can only wonder what you are attempting to achieve with such divisiveness. Is this indicative of how team Obama will behave. If so, it is no better than Bush.

I’ve heard the Boss has the stage kept a cool 58 degrees at all times and that the “sweat” we see is actually fake spayed on sweat that is about as real as Joe Biden’s hair. Well, it is a rumor anyway.
You know, it’s kind of weird how Springsteen celebrate folk like Vietnam vets in some of his songs and yet he bypasses a man like John McCain to support Barak Obama.
The junior Senator from Illinois is a man who has never even had to sweat out a vote on a controversial issue. He would just vote Present. Come to think of it, he and Sprinsgteen are made for each other.

WTG Bruce, your heart is in the right place, but your blind as a bat.
Obama has said he is going to “change the world.” Let me give you a clue Music man. Megalomaniacs talk this way.
This man was surrounded by Marxist his entire life, from Frank Davis, Ayes, Dorhn, Klonsky, Jeremiah Wright and racist as well. For over 20 years this man set in a pit of vile hatred and racism. And Bruce endorses him.
Clueless, absolutely clueless.

Springsteen has been a shill for the Democrat party all his life. He is a boring drone that doesn’t know any other way. Perhaps if he read the “B-of-R” and the big “C” he would know more about what “rights” he is actually guaranteed and which “rights” you have to earn through hard work, initiative and the sweat of your brow.

“Thoughtless, reckless and morally adrift.” While Bruce was describing
Bush/Cheney,Rove, it’s also a pretty good description of the McCain/Palin campaign. Four more years!

WORTH REPEATING!!!
So…I guess we won’t be seeing or hearing much of Springsteen anymore if Obama becomes President. After Obama bankrupts the coal industry, there won’t be any electricity to turn on the guitars, mics, keyboards, etc.
Looks like Obama’s taking us back to the energy crisis of the Carter years.
Vote Obama-Vote Carter.

“The right to a job and a living wage and health care?” When was that the american way? Not even socialist countries guarantee that…maybe a handout to live on and healthcare is available in Europe, but not a job.
America is the land of opportunities, where every one has the freedom and the right to pursue happiness. Maybe those born in America from privilege or slavery or immigration just forget this…or were never taught this.
We have the freedom and the liberty to pursue our dreams. As Tito the construction worker so eloquently said..”We don’t want the crumbs, and we don’t want to be held back..we want the same opportunities…that’s ALL.. NO handouts – liberty, freedom and opportunity.

A question for my black friends…
Mr Obama is said to be black and I understand that he is actually half black. That’s cool. He grew up in a minority neighborhood, right?
What if he was a fourth black (like Tiger Woods)? Would he still be black? How about an eighth black? Just curious.

And how many Ohio people do you think were there just to hear Bruce Springsteen? Probably quite a few, there are some real fans out there so I guess it is hard to say who was there for who. But I know it looked good for Obama to have the people there and just one last facade before Nov. 4th .

McCain/Palin = Fascism + Walking Contradictions!
Obama/Biden = Peace + Prosperity!
The rich need not get any richer, they’re all doomed in the end anyways :)
