The Note: Obama Seeks to Define Mandate
ABC News’ Rick Klein reports in Wednesday’s Note:
The One is the one. Yes, we can, and yes, he did — but can he really?
A new dawn arrived, coming long before sunrise — and closing out a long-lasting morning in America. It casts light on a new map, produced by a new electorate, and invites in a new president’s vision for a troubled time.
President-Elect Barack Hussein Obama — his name itself speaking to the improbable journey that brought him here — gets a mandate to go with his landslide, yes. Now, out of the grand scramble to define what that means, comes the great challenge that may define a generation: What to do with it.
For Sen. John McCain — a graceful exit that gives the nation the gift of finality, if not quite unity. A return to the Senate enhanced by a remarkable run of his own — the chance, still, to serve his country.
For congressional Democrats — expanded majorities in the House and Senate, though not the kind that makes compromise optional. (And will we find out what Nancy Pelosi’s House looks like without Rahm Emanuel — the odds-on choice to become Obama’s chief of staff?)

For the GOP — rock-bottom, perhaps, and new opportunities. The party is wide open for rebranding, and the smart minds know how quickly 2010 approaches. (In the meantime, it’s going to get ugly.)
This is Obama’s story though, with much still unwritten. He won his way: A calm, confident campaign that defied conventions and disproved assumptions. A broad demographic and geographic sweep — the kind we’ve been trained to think can no longer exist in polarized American politics.
Can he govern the same way?
“A national catharsis,” declares The New York Times’ Adam Nagourney, “a repudiation of a historically unpopular Republican president and his economic and foreign policies, and an embrace of Mr. Obama’s call for a change in the direction and the tone of the country.”
“Barack Obama built his victory out of a concrete base of near unanimous support from black voters, layered with overwhelming support from Hispanics, young people and enough white voters to remake the partisan landscape in the United States,” ABC’s Brian Hartman writes.
“This happened because we did this — we did this, America did this,” Oprah Winfrey told ABC’s Robin Roberts, on “Good Morning America” Wednesday.

Sen. DeMint: GOP Race Could Go Until Convention
Obama Avoids Questions on Contraception Rule
You know what I find very intersting about this post? You now are using Obama’s full name Barack Hussein Obama! When did this become ok to do? If this would have been done prior to this election the left would have been screaming bloody murder! It will be interesting to see how many people are upset about this! My guess would be XERO now that the election is over! Talk about DOUBLE STANDARD by the MSM!

ABC are you trying to outrage the Liberals? Oh my goodness how dare you use his full name Barack Hussein Obama!
Oh that is right the election is now over so I guess it is ok!

Only “NOW” it is ok with the media to use his middle name.
That tells you just how pathetic the media really is.

You know I hope they pass the Fairness Doc I want to see MSNBC / CNN / ABC all get that tingling feeling up their legs when they realize they have to have equal time for both sides! I want to see Keith Olberman’s face when they tell him that O’Reilly or Hannity will be joing MSNBC because they now have to present both sides equal!

Feel the magic – we believed in the change – now lets see it happen.

Oh Chuck…why don’t you go and cry someplace else.
After watching McCain’s speech last night, I hope he can go back to being himself. Let’s face it, the McCain that ran for president wasn’t being honest with us or himself. He leased his soul to the powers of the GOP to get elected, but now he can go back to being a real maverick and help President Obama fix this nation.
That is my hope. And hope seems to be catching on these days.

This whole race has been a disgrace, 99% of the blacks voted for him only becuse he is black with no consideration of his background, experience, or his beliefs. I am so ashame of my fellow Americans, whatever he dishes out they better be ready to such it up. His race means nothing to me but his values do. I have a good, indemand job- those of you who do not get really for the pink slip and everyone standing around waiting for him to pay their mortgage and gas bill- well it is going to be a long wait. A rose by any other name would smell just as sweet.
Barak’s middle name being used isn’t the issue; it’s how it is used. As a slur? As a fear tactic? In a sentence trying to label him as a Muslim who somehow isn’t really American and can’t be trusted because of Saddam?
This article underscores how silly that argument was; names mean little and this election was decided on entirely more weighty issues.

55,634,904 and counting Americans opposed to Obama is not a “landslide”.
While you think about that, look at a country by country map. Still think it is a “landslide”?
Keep up your divisive distortions of the truth and you are in for a long four years.

Hello, Chuck… 2001 George Bush & FoxNews America is calling. They want their Patriotic Zombies back.
We all heard McCain and Obama last night. They both asked for the help and support of all Americans. There’s a lot of work to do. It will take decades to clean up the financial, environmental and foreign policy disasters that we’re left with. For some, it isn’t about America; it’s only about your team winning or losing. Go watch Sports Center and stay out of the way, will you?
Posted by: Noel | November 5, 2008, 10:44 am 10:44 am
How would you define “landslide?” Let’s look at some of the dimensions:
Obama has a 7.1 M vote lead right now.
Obama received the most votes in presidential election history.
VA and IN go blue for the first time in 44 years.
NC goes blue for the first time in 32 years.
NV goes blue in a blow-out for only the third time in 44 years.
CO goes blue for only the second time in 44 years.
Democrats have won the popular vote in 4 of the last 5 presidential elections.
Obama won more than double the number of electoral votes than McCain.
The following “toss-up” states went blue: IA, NM, OH, WI.
Obama did 5% better among white voters than John Kerry did.
If all of these figures were McCain’s and not Obamas, would you Republicans be calling it a landslide?

I once heard a wise saying, “It’s not what we do, but how we do it that matters.” The way I heard Hussein being used during the campaign was to suggest and insinuate that there was something unsavory, dangerous and un-American about the name and the person. I believe it was used intentionally to create fear and divisiveness. The way I hear it in this context is to accentuate a momentous and honorable moment in our collective life. Each one of us gets to choose every day what we do and, more importantly, why we are doing it.

When George Bush was elected, I said, whether I voted for this guy or not, he is now MY guy, and I wish him the best. It is now time for the conservatives to do the same. Whether you like it or not, Obama will be the next president. Let’s act like adults, and work together to fix what is broken in this country. We should not need terror attacks or war to remind us that we are one nation. We may disagree on the best way to fix our problems, but we need to remember that liberal or conservative, we all have America’s best interests in mind.

My congradulations to Mr. Obama on running a tremendous campaign. I am first & foremost an AMERICAN. Even though I do not agree with his policies…
I will do what most of you libs refused to do for Bush…I will support him as my President.
There is much work ahead and the new president is going tohave a huge task. It starts by ending all this foolish back & forth BS. I ask my fellow conseravtives to show more class and pride in our country than libs did after both the 2000 & 2004 elections.
John McCain said Country First and I beleive that is the way to move forward. It does not mean walking in lock-step, or agreeing with everything from the left. Let us also hope that Pelosi & Reid understand its time to stop the partisan bickering. We do not need anymore speech such as her’s before that first bailout package vote.
It is time to see if Obama, Pelosi & Reid can actualy DO what they talk about – Reach across the aisle and work together. The last 8 years were not a disaster because of GWB. It became a mess because the liberals were too bitter and vengeful about losing to work together and get the job done. It’s now our time to show them how good things can get accomplished.
God Bless America!

The Democratic Party was forced to cough up a giant hairball in 1968, which was immediately swallowed by the Republican Party. This was called the “Southern Strategy.”
Now that hairball has made the Republican Party very sick. The question is what will happens now?
Will the GOP spit out the giant hairball, or will that giant, angry hairball be all that is left of the Republican Party?

And by the way, first poster, the current article uses Barak’s middle name to point out the unique accomplishment of someone getting elected President with a middle name like Hussein.
Those who made a point of using that middle name during the campaign did so only to spotlight Obama’s supposed “differentness” from us White People.
How often did anyone use McCain’s middle name? What is McCain’s middle name? I don’t even know.
That’s because there was no reason for anyone to try to use it to try to make either of those points.

The problem with party politics is that everyone acts like they are cheering for their team in the super bowl. This is not a game, it is the political system that we have to manage the country. I bet none of you get this upset when the chairman of GM changes hand.
As an independent, I can only hope that our new president is smart enough to pick the smartest people, regardless of their political party, in order to turn this country around. There are wise people in both parties. I always said it is like riding a bike, you won’t go far if you are only peddling on one side. You will lose you balance and fall down.
We have lost our balance, and we have fallen down. It’s time we pick our selves up, and balance things. We had two choices, and the country made their choice.
Those who are bitter about the outcome need to look inside themselves to realize what they are bitter about, and then get over it. The negative things that are being said are juvenile, and have no basis in reality. It’s not about being wrong or right, it’s about getting to the people’s business.
This is the first, and still continuing to be a country that peacefully hands the control of the government to the next person that the people have chosen. There is no reason for that to stop now.
There is a new day for America, lets start it off right!

That giant hairball known as the Evangelicals. The GOP needs to cut them loose if it has any hopes for the future. America has become too diverse, it is composed of Christians, Muslims, and Jews.

Thanks to the media, and China, and Russia, and assorted Middle Eastern and African nations donating lots of money in small denominations. (Now a days, we got credit cards that are untraceable). Barak set a world record on campaign spending for an election 1 BILLION dollars!!!!!
He ought to be very proud that he bought the election. And think of all our friends he now owes!
Also, next year I just can’t wait until he does away with any coal mining industry. We hate that dirty fuel that pollutes our environment even if it supplies the majority of our energy requirements. After all, Barak says we will need to pay more for clean energy because “global warming” is killing us. While we are at it why don’t you also tax gasoline more so we use less of it? It might be even better for us to live in Communes! It is wasteful for one family to own a home when we can share the wealth with our neighbors! Then we don’t need to burn so much fossil fuels. Heck, you might be able to pile a whole block into one house and save on heating!!! Yes America, there are changes coming and it is time for us to sacrifice for the benefit of the masses!

Don’t complain when Barak cripples our military defense and N Korea in concert with Iran and Venezuela and possibly Russia launch an attack on our soil. You think it is so important to appease our enemies and be politically correct. You libs have your heads in the sand if you don’t see it coming!

I remember Dubya claiming a mandate and political capital in 2000… after he lost the popular vote and squeaked by in electoral votes with a timely assist by the Supreme Court. Obama won both a landslide in electoral votes and a majority of the popular vote. And some Republicans are trying to claim he has no mandate? Come on, that’s just sad.

Voter confidence about the situation in Iraq has hit an all time high.
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 51% of voters now expect the situation in Iraq to improve over the next six months. That’s up two percentage points from the preceding week.
Just 17% of voters now say the situation will get worse in the coming months, while 16% say things will stay about the same.
Does this mean Obama might change his mind and realize that defeating al-Qaeda in Iraq is equally important with al-Qaeda in Afghanistan?
Maybe not. How will they achieve Barney Frank’s 25% cut in Defense spending if we don’t surrender in at least one theatre of war?

A lot of classy Obama supporters here…not.
They are still calling names and acting like idiots, even if they did get who they wanted in office..amazing !

the reason that it is ok to use his middle name now is because it is no longer possible for the brain dead to be convinced it is a reason to vote against him.the same way the MSM never mentioned that one of McCains sons was an executive in a Nevada bank that went butts up within 45days of his leaving. It was prejudicial but of no real relevence to the issues.I do the same thing when I don’t want to confuse my grandkids who are 3 and8 LOL

The other thing that the idiots never seem to understand is that when an AMERICAN has a child they have citizenship no matter where they were born.I believe he was born in Hawaii but it really doesn’t matter. The postings you see here are (With some exceptions)a perfect example of what has become a disease in this country,a bunch of spoiled brats that don’t realize how well they have it and who are more concerned with being right than they are with being happy.move to South America or Africa and see if it takes more than two weeks to beg for the US that you trash now.

I will probably wonder if the distant cousin Cheney was paid or just wanted to do something obviously nice for someone else than the person who got the indorsement.. Obama made a great choice in bringing in the friend of McCain as VP, which prevented a lot of attacks, that otherwise would be standard GOP.
The best finance secretary would be someone from Yale, Harvard etc.. Someone who has a positive way of talking to people, who has been in the news discussing the economy, and who sounds to be democrat..
Guess who I am thinking about.. a 45-55 y/o slim man..
By the way, now I understand why some people thought Obama was muslim and terrorist – because they watched FoxNews without intellectually filtering..

So a “black” was elected? Baloney a mulatto was elected using the black card to get his white side in office. The guy is all business in white rallies and on TV, gets all “hood-speak” when he’s around the “brothers”. You think Oprah would have come out for the same person if his hair was straight and his complexion peach? Hell no she and others claiming they want equality are in most cases worse bigots than the whites that wear the hoods to hide their identities. Four years is a long time for things to boil up, I see a “change” coming but I think it may involve things we havent seen in 40 yrs, inside the borders rather than thousands of miles away in the desert. Not me but knowing people in general it wont sit on the back burner log before things change on their own and probably not for the better. We can only hope things do stay calm and people see the errors of this week 4 yrs from now when a new opponent runs against BHO in 2012. Damn even Hillary the socialist Clinton would be better than this week’s pick.

Today is Elect ion day in the US, probably one of the most important elect ions in the presidential history of the US. Whatever happens today will greatly affect t not only Americans but also the whole entire world. I truly hope Obama wins, and I hope that his words are put into actions… soon. The US is pretty Messed up and it scare s me a lot, because although we Americans have spent many years only thinking about ourselves and wasting our money as if it was paper and now we are facing the consequences of our selfishness, this is the way we were brought up, this is the way we were taught. We were taught to live a comfortable life, to have whatever we want with the click of a finger, and to have not just one of something, but many of something. When we go a store we are not worried of having sufficient money to buy the shirt that we want but rather if there are sufficient shirt s to satisfy our needs. Our society is a very materialistic one, we are used to going shopping almost every single weekend when in third world country’s people are saving there money for almost a month long to buy the pair of jeans they want so badly, and when they buy them they show them off to all of their friends and family. Us Americans have nothing to show off because almost every thing is just bough t. This worries me… because just about now when we finally see the major consequences of our actions, we finally open our eyes and react . We react to an almost collapsed economy, one that although we have faith and hope in recuperating, may just be too late to do so. That is how people react, we see thing s and hear thing s and try to avoid them so that in some way they don’t affect us and just when a major tragedy happens (one that we saw coming but did absolutely nothing whatsoever to try to avoid it or help it) we finally open our eyes to it and realize that it was possible and that it was truly coming. I believe that although this is something horrible in some way we must learn from it and gain wisdom from it, so that next time we can act before something bad happens. We must unite as a country and help ourselves, even if Obama wins as a president of the 2008 elections, he himself cannot change the whole entire country in 4 years, we must learn and help each other, think about each other … not just about “me” “me” “me”! “Me” must change to “US”. These past few years have been very difficult for every one, especially this year and this year just has almost 2 month s remaining…We should take advantage of these 2 month s to realize that the next years that are almost yet to come are not going to be any easier, they will be hard, and hopefully will not be as tragic, but we must realize that anything can happen, and absolutely anything is possible, and that this time our eyes must be wide open and that our reactions should be well thought out.

Chuck, are you really too stupid to realize the difference? You and your kind used his middle name in a purely derogatory fashion. This article is not attempting to do that in any way. I suspect you understand the difference and instead prefer to throw a childish tempar tantrum. Poor baby.

This is my last post here until
the next presidential election cycle!
I’d like to congratulate all of you
Obama supporters, the people have
spoken.
Having said that I must point out to
you that the stock market was stabilizing last week when it appeared
that McCain had a chance to win.
Even on Monday the market gained
about 300 points!
After Obama’s win on Tuesday the stock
market has tanked big time for two days
in a row! Down about 900 points!
I hope you Obama supporters didn’t have
much money left in the market because
your President-Elect just cost you a
bundle!
Let’s pray that he has a successful
term and our economy rebounds but if
it doesn’t don’t blame me you voted
for him!

To you Obama supporters: Congratulations on a well fought victory. You deserve to celebrate. You won the battle, enjoy!
However, this is a war of ideas and convictions. So it is not over, it is never over. I look forward to meeting you again on the battle field another day. My goal is not to “kill” the enemy (you) but by my ideas convince you to leave the dark side (Joke) and come over to my side.
I will say that my side was handicapped by having a candidate that I had to hold my nose to vote for because the alternative (Obama) was worse in my opinion, and I am talking McCain not Palin.
So again Congratulations! Well Done! Enjoy the victory. See you tomorrow out on the battleground of ideas, where we both try to make America a better place.

First thought: Most of these posts are fine examples of why George Washington was opposed to political parties in the U.S.
Some of the posts here are fine examples of why it would be a good idea to actually start teaching U.S. history in the schools again. Some of you don’t seem to be aware of the fact that Ben Franklin voluntarily donated money to assist Muslims living in Philadelphia prior to the American Revolution build a mosque where they could practice their faith. Not all of the dead white guys who founded this nation were bigots. Surprise! ;)
Most Americans don’t have a problem with various religions as long as those who practice it are peaceful and respectful of their fellow citizens.
Second thought: Bringing the country together would be alot easier if BOTH sides would realize that bi-partisanship is a two-way street. Compromise has to come from BOTH sides if it’s going to work.
Without cooperation from BOTH parties we will get the same ol’, same ol’ from D.C. instead of “Change” for the better – which is what we should all want – even more than pathetic table scraps from inside the Beltway offered by politicians like a bribe for your vote.
We must not let future candidates craving unilateral power supercede own ability to spot a BS promise when we hear it.
Voting with our brains will keep us free, voting with our hearts can lead us into dependence. Be wary of giving government the power to ‘take care’ of you. People who need their government end up owned by their government.
E Pluribus Unum
