Guide to Election Night: Six Early States to Watch

If the election came down to You-Tube viewers, a pro-John McCain video would be the winner.
A video of an Iraq veteran giving his endorsement to McCain is the site’s most watched election video, with 11 million views, according to the BBC, which calls it “short, simple and powerful.”
The video opens with a young man with close-cropped hair standing outside in casual clothes next to an American flag.
“Dear Mr. Obama,” he says, and describes himself as an Iraq war veteran, whose yearlong tour convinced him that Iraqis are “just like us” in seeking freedom.
“Are they better off today than they were in 2002? You bet,” he says.
The man proceeds to list the reasons he doesn’t agree with Obama’s policies toward Iraq and instead is endorsing John McCain for president, “because he understands the fundamental truth, freedom is always worth the price.”
The man then walks away from the camera, revealing he has a prosthetic left leg.

The Los Angeles Times is refusing to release a videotape that it says shows Barack Obama praising a Chicago professor who was an alleged mouthpiece for the Palestine Liberation Organization while it was a designated terrorist group in the 1970s and ’80s.
According an LA Times article written by Peter Wallsten in April, Obama was a “friend and frequent dinner companion” of Rashid Khalidi, who from 1976 to1982 was reportedly a director of the official Palestinian press agency, WAFA, which was operating in exile from Beirut with the PLO.

In the article — based on the videotape obtained by the Times — Wallsten said Obama addressed an audience during a 2003 farewell dinner for Khalidi, who was Obama’s colleague at the University of Chicago, before his departure for Columbia University in New York. Obama said his many talks with Khalidi and his wife Mona stood as “consistent reminders to me of my own blind spots and my own biases.”

Wake up people! In The a recently popularized tape, Obama talks about bankrupting the coal industry. The main thrust of his comments are substantial on their own, but I would like to draw your attention to a side note. He rightly mentions that his plans would generate high costs to the energy producing companies and that these companies would naturally pass these costs on to the consumers, dramatically increasing energy costs. Absolutely correct! How is this same man able to convince so many that he is going to cut their taxes and make the corporate world pay big instead of us? The “rich companies” will of course pass on any increased tax burden to the consumers. You are not getting out of any taxes here, they are only being hidden in your goods and services instead of being directly deducted from your paycheck.

I trust Barack Obama in ways I have never trusted prior candidates. I am a white woman in my thirties with my fingers crossed. Yes we can and yes we will!

So today we hear Obama tell the people involved in coal production that he intends to bankrupt any power producer wanting to build a new coal plant. it is clear that he intends to kill the coal industry. Are you people in Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania listening?

I agree that five of these six States could fall either way. However, Pennsylvania will go for Obama – that much is a certainty. Anyone who thinks Pennsylvania is a swing State has not spent time there and does not understand the sulture in the State. Many, many people in Pennsylvania are doves, and even if they lean Republican,they will not vote for McCain: his support of the Iraqi war will not be palatable to them.

** Iraq is nothing but another Vietnam.. thats why John McCain is so obessed w/ winning there.. but why are we still there when Osama Bin Laden is in Afghanistan and Pakistan? what sense does it make to spend 10 billion in a country a month when they enjoy a surplus? is that in the best interest of America? No, not really when we don’t have enough money to take care of issues at home. These war hungry people need to think of diplomacy, not forcing other nations to be like us. They don’t want to be America so why force them?

During the election some have chosen to focus on this ephemeral called experience. Some have a static view of leadership that is rooted in the past. That is indeed of some value but only to the extent that it can meaningfully adjust to the dynamism of the present moment. Lessons from the past presidents Cliton and Bush jr. demonstrate this value. Clinton was dynamic Bush was static and the disaster in America is evidence of this fact. Now to McCain and Obama. McCain the experience candidate is stuck in the past… Obama the dynamic candidate is ably suited to engage the dynamic environment in which we find ourselves, as evidenced in the execution of his campaign and the handling of the economic crisis. Leadership is not about experience as it is about to the leader relates to people and not solely to the static elements of war, and material things.

I’ll tell you what Obama has done. He beat the Clintons, something the Republican’s couldn’t do. He’s put together one of the most effective and ingenious political campaigns in history. He’s leading going into the last day before the election. It takes someone with vision and insight to do that. It takes someone who has the skills to manage this country going forward to do that.
Thats what he’s done. As for the Republican ops whose job it is to post on all the blogs to create doubt and fear….. hasn’t worked so far, at least not enough to turn it around for McCain. I tell you that the real conservatives in this country should endorse (quietly) Obama’s campaign because he was raised through age 30 under 10 years of Kennedy/Johnson/Carter but 20 of Nixon/Ford/Reagan policies.
1. This shows that he prospered under relatively conservative policies.
2. He is the fruit of the “color blind” policies that were being pushed.
3. If elected, a lot the rationale for affirmative action and similar race-based quotas goes away because the system did work. He saw his opportunities and took them.
4. If he were a little more conservative (maybe a lot more), he would be the poster child of those folks.

This is confusing. According to the Electoral Map ABC posted, if all the ‘blue states’ stay blue except for PA and McCain gains Ohio, Obama could still win if he wins North Carolina and Florida.
I read that Obama have more paths to 270 than McCain, who must win *all* the swing states in order to get to 270 even if he looses PA. So what gives with these numbers you posted, George? They make no sense in light of the so-called ‘Electoral Map’ ABC has now.

Yes Tom, My daughter said they had a mock election at her school near Indianapolis and Obama won by a huge margin. I can’t remembe the tally exactly but it was something like 425-187.

His college background, papers and writings that would give more insight into the man. He has not been open with his background. His books, (written for public consumption) which if examined, appeared to be written by different writers the 1st one looks eerily similar to Bill Ayer writing composition. What exactly has he done that qualifies him for the most important job that the country could give. If you were hiring a man for a job of national security, would what a man says be more important than his background and open disclosure of his past? He had served a total of 1 month as a US senator when he began his run for President. Geez!, that means anyone who wins even a congressional seat is automatically qualified for President right away. I don’t feel so.

Voinovich told McCain that his legislation would “put coal of out of business.” McCain agreed that his legislation would “require sacrifice” acknowledging that critics said it would cost “thousands of jobs.” Nonetheless, McCain (correctly) stood by his legislation, and even said that he wanted a tougher set of rules.

I understand Michelle Obama’s desire to detect among black Princeton students an identification with and a continued concern for the huge numbers of black Americans still affected by the ripples of slavery, Jim Crow and endemic racism in the North and South.
The result of blacks entering an educated and affluent white world should not be their denying a continued connection to fellow blacks still “set apart.” It has been 23 years since Ms. Obama wrote her thesis and she is a more mature woman, wife and mother now, but I would hope that she still holds that concern.
I suggest Mr. Barranger read a recently published book, “Slavery by Another Name” by Douglas A. Blackmon. Mr. Blackmon is a writer for the Wall Street Journal (hardly a left-wing publication) and a born and bred white southerner. The facts he presents were a revelation to me, a 68 year-old white, educated, Northener. His book helped me understand how racism could remain so deeply rooted in our society so many years after slavery ended. I also understand more clearly now why it’s so important that educated, influential black Americans, like Michelle Obama, must continue to keep attention paid to the racial divide that weakens the American ideal until that divide truly disappears.

Vote for who Hill and Bill are voting for……they are voting for McCain because otherwise Hill can’t even compete again until 2016….do you really see her waninting to wait that long…..especially if Obama screws it up royal and people go back to voting Repub. The ads the Republicans are running about Obama and his position re coal are completely contrary Obama’s energy plan.
Obaman’s energy plan, which he began promoting in May 2007, calls for investing in low emissions coal plants and creating coal plants with carbon capture and sequestation. Check Obama’s website for more info, if you are truly being held back from voting for Obama because of this issue.
With respect to Michelle’s college papers, I can’t see where anybody gets that she hates white people because she wrote of feeling apart from white America. I don’t see an “elevation of black over white” in the quotes provided above. What I do see, though, is a discussion about the role race has often played in American society and whether it is an issue that can be resolved.
From my reading of what has been typed here (I will assume the quotes are accurate), there seems to be an idea that as an individual black person enters into what where formerly predominately white worlds (such as higher ed, certain professions), this person is viewed as something “other” by people of both races. Many blacks may not believe you can relate to their struggles because of the change of perspective, and whites see you as, well, something other than white. The distrust on both sides is something to be worked through, and, I believe, America is coming a long way really fast (we are only 40 years removed from black and white drinking fountains). It is scary for a lot of people, but it is also very exciting.

In this election, Americans can choose to make history, or to repeat it.

We should really know more about these potential staff folks during a campaign as an indication of where things might go and what that administration believes or how they are likely to respond. In case you hadn’t noticed the economy is heading way south quickly and the depression like conditions of yesteryear are just around the corner. I wouldn’t wish this mess on anyone and don’t think either candidate is up to the challenge. If we had a few other parties to choose from in the future that might be a good idea, perhaps the time is right for those to form. I don’t take my right to vote lightly and being a strict Constitutionalist I am pretty disgusted about how far we have digressed as a nation. Who am I voting for? Out of desperation it probably will be Obama because the alternative is beyond a disaster, so it really is a lesser of two evils thing. I, too, have a “Certificate of Live Birth” and a “Certified Birth Certificate.” I know for a solid fact I was born in America. I also know that my brother, who is two years older and was born in the same hospital, has a birth certificate which looks different from mine. Also, my step-sons, who were born in the same county I was, have birth certificates which look completely different from mine.

Obama was talking about TRADITIONAL coal plants — you know, the ones that have to pay huge amounts of money because of emissions tax. These emissions taxes are already in place. They are not new fines or taxes that Obama would impose.
What the Republicans don’t want you to understand is that Obama is PROMOTING clean coal — investing jobs. Clean coal plants are plants that are low-emissions and have carbon capture and sequestation. More importantly, this is technology that we will develop in America! We will be the only country using it, and we will be able to export the technology.

The Great Depression became what it was not because of the starting conditions, but mostly because of bad decisions made along the way. Japan didn’t mimic the U.S. policies of higher taxes. The Japanese government kept tariffs low, didn’t raise taxes, and actually cut taxes in the mid-1930s. Although the Japanese economy was affected by the events in the rest of the world, like everyone else, statistics like industrial production actually show more growth during the 1930s than during the 1920s. —–Obama’s plan–He wants a 33% increase in the tax rates on capital gains and dividends, an increase of 16% to 32% in the top payroll tax rate, reinstatement of the death tax with a 45% top rate, and a new payroll tax on employers estimated at 7% to help finance his health insurance plan. He’s also contending for higher tariffs under his protectionist policies.Finally, he would increase corporate taxes by 25%, though American businesses already face the second-highest marginal tax rates in the industrialized world, thus directly harming manufacturing and job creation while weakening demand for the dollar.

By some curiosity of having had too affluent a life, almost half the country is readying to make war on businesses, the golden geese that provided most of the material possessions Americans now have. Isn’t this what the Obama campaign is all about – a change to less reliance on business and greater reliance on Government?
Senator Obama has campaigned on promises to tax business more. He has promised to put the entire burden of his new spending plan on businesses and individuals making $250K (or $120k now) all the way up to the largest corporations. Large corporations are designated for progressively greater battering and including special hits such as windfall profit taxes.
Senator Obama apparently thinks Americans consider that businesses are predatory entities without much beneficial value; that businesses use employees and return insufficient compensating worth; that businesses exist for profit and return less than they should that is essential to society.
Let’s take Mr. Obama’s philosophy to the extreme conclusion. What would it be like in America without business? Where would people get food and other necessities without food markets? Where would we obtain heating fuel in winter without fuel suppliers? Where would we obtain autos to drive to work without auto makers? Where would we find jobs without businesses to employ us?
Well you might say Senator Obama does not wish to kill business. He merely wishes to tax it appropriately. Does Mr. Obama know where that fine line is between business non-survival and maintenance of business health, and thus the health of America? When he proposes to put the entire cost of his spending plan on small to large business, and when he campaigns on promises of wind fall profits taxes, then we must conclude he does not know where that fine line is.
There are some things Senator Obama apparently does not appreciate. Profits are not a bad thing. Indeed, profits drive investment. Investment provides the capital which purchases plant and equipment. In short, profit is the engine that grows American industry and thus accounts for the good living standard that Americans enjoy. And who are the recipients of profit and the providers of capital? In the case of small business they are small owners probably of S type corporations. In the case of large corporations they are often, but not always, thousands of small investors who have purchased securities, that is, a stake in corporations. Thousands of American investors, and foreign investors, own these corporations. They are the people who keep corporate and business securities in retirement 401Ks. Profit goes to investors in the form of dividends and appreciation of the securities.
In the case of small business, where Joe the Plumber is a good example, people who start businesses do so by working long and hard. They usually had to work 12 or more hours per day, seven days per week for months but more often for years to get the business running. They had to risk to the limit, putting up their homes and other property as collateral for business loans. Even then more often than not they failed. Few new businesses stay in business more than three years. But sometimes they tried again and again until they finally succeeded. Staying power and intelligence characterize successful business people. Should these qualities be punished? Should not the government provide them with “risk and reward” credits rather than punitive taxation?
There is a very practical reason to reduce, not increase, taxation of business. When Ireland reduced her corporate tax rate from 22 to 11 percent she went from the second lowest per-capita income in Europe to the second highest. This happened because the lower tax rate allowed businesses to export products at lower prices and thus become more competitive. More jobs were created in Ireland and synergistic economic activity increased.
Japan has the highest corporate tax rate in the world at 41 percent, just ahead of the US which is second in the world at 35 to 40 percent depending on the industry. Japan has not recovered from her banking and real-estate collapse that occurred 26 years ago because her corporations are not competitive. US corporations are not competitive either largely due to the high corporate tax rate here.
Corporations and other businesses respond to taxation in two ways; (1) they reduce employment costs, and (2) they raise prices. In some cases they might move to another country where the tax structure is friendlier. When businesses lay off employees or place employees on part time status, people lose jobs and benefits. When businesses raise prices, people pay more for necessities. By the way, when businesses move to friendlier venues, they take technology with them, and technology is the last advantage America has the makes us productively competitive.
A high corporate tax rate is, along with disparate labor rates, a direct contributor to the persistently negative trade balance the America has had for several years. The negative trade balance is maintained only by growing national debt. That is, we must borrow to pay for imported goods because our export earnings are insufficient to balance what we spend on imports. So if we want to reverse the accumulation of debt, then we must reduce the corporate tax rate.

Countries like Singapore, Switzerland and Ireland have vastly outperformed their peers by attracting investment and jobs to their beneficial tax regimes, some of which include extensive tax free periods for high margin knowledge based economic activity. As a result, the US corporate tax now impedes the ability of the U.S. economy to attract investment, reducing the productivity, wages and living standards of working Americans while allowing stockholders to indefinitely defer tax on reinvested or locked-in corporate earnings, including corporate earnings that have never been taxed or been lightly taxed in foreign jurisdictions. With rates dropping worldwide (an average of 30% in the last 30 years), U.S. companies with foreign operations have become susceptible to takeover by more lightly taxed foreign rivals (US companies are already being acquired by foreign companies 3 times more than the reverse!), a situation that will be aggravated if we tax foreign earnings through the repeal of deferral. This will certainly have ADVERSE CONSEQUENCES FOR PRIME US JOBS.
The only way to save our economy and jobs in the current global environment is to REDUCE OR (even better) TOTALLY ELIMINATE THE CORPORATE INCOME TAX. Fiddling with capital gains rates in the context of a dual tax system (corporate and individual) is totally useless way to enforce progressivity and really isn’t as effective an incentive to attracting capital and jobs TO OUR COUNTRY as is a substantial reduction in the corporate income tax.
The global economy, or more specifically mobile investment, is hurting a broad group of working Americans. Given a choice between paying U.S. level wages or paying workers in an emerging country significantly less, companies will tend to choose the latter. It doesn’t have to be like this. It is possible to change the competitive equation that drives corporate investment decisions so that jobs are attracted to the U.S. again.
First, consider how the market is operating now. If working Americans organized and got higher wages, sooner or later the corporation will be motivated to just shut down the U.S. plant and move the operations to a lower wage (and generally lower tax) environment. Like it or not, most companies will not pay their workers more just to be nice. Even if a company would prefer to hire American workers, they are competing against other companies that will use the cheap foreign labor, and eventually it must fall in line or fail. In fact, any corporation that didn’t seek to reduce costs and increase profits would usually lose out to its competitors and would be acquired or go bankrupt. To remain viable, corporations must minimize their overall costs.
In industries that rely heavily on manual labor, this trend of moving to the lower wage locations cannot realistically be reversed. America cannot and should not try to compete for low wage, low skill jobs typically associated with low profit margins. Instead, we must seek to obtain the promised upside of globalization, good new jobs in higher margin businesses that can pay wages sufficient to maintain the living standards of an advanced economy. But those industries are tax sensitive. They earn high profit margins relative to the cost of manufacture, and so tax is a major consideration in where they locate their activities. Does the U.S. tax system attract those activities here? No, exactly the opposite! The U.S. could afford such a system back when we were far ahead of everybody else, with greatly superior technology, an elite workforce, and relatively great wealth. But we can’t afford it now. The world has changed and we are no longer able to retain these jobs in the face of foreign comptetion.
To understand the impact of mobility on jobs and wages under our current tax system consider an example with some simple math. For most corporations, deciding where to put their operations is a matter of arithmetic. To choose between two countries, they consider the cost of manufacturing (or providing service or performing research) in the one versus the other, considering the cost and availability of adequate labor, raw materials, shipping costs, energy, etc. That allows them to compute their profit before tax for each of the competing jurisdictions. They then layer in tax. Whichever jurisdiction yields the highest after-tax profit wins.
So, say the choice is between a Chinese factory and an American one, and that the company would have to pay 25% tax in China (the full statutory rate) and 35% in the U.S. Say it sells bowling balls for $20 in the U.S., and that it would cost $8 to make them in China and ship them here, but $10 to make them in the U.S. The cost of labor associated with making each bowling ball is $5 in China and $7 in the U.S., but all other costs are the same, $3. What’s the math? Under current law the decision is obvious. If they choose China, they make $12 per ball ($20 sales price less $8 cost), pay tax of 25% on that or $3, and clear 12-3= $9. If they choose the U.S., they make $10 per ball ($20 sales price less $10 cost), pay tax of 35% on that or $3.50, and clear $10-3.50=$6.50. Obviously they make the bowling balls in China, and China gets the jobs.
If U.S. workers accepted a pay-cut to secure the jobs, how much of a pay-cut would they have to accept to attract the investment to the U.S. instead of China? Answer: U.S. workers would have to accept a pay-cut greater than 55% or about $3.85 per ball to secure the jobs. Again, let’s look at the numbers. Assuming a $20 sales price less U.S. wages of $3.15 and $3 for other costs, an investor in the U.S. would make $13.85 before taxes. Then, the investor would pay U.S. tax at 35% on the $13.85 or $4.85, and clear $9, the same as in China. Because of our current tax system, the pay-cut required to attract the jobs to the U.S., at least $3.85 ($7-$3.15), is nearly double the $2 wage differential between the U.S. and China.

Sometimes working Americans are openly offered pay and/or benefit cuts to remain employed. Sometimes jobs simply disappear and the displaced workers, particularly in the manufacturing sector, must accept significant pay and benefit cuts at new jobs. And sometimes the jobs are never created here in the first place. Whatever the case, the fact is that pay and benefits in the U.S. are limited because investment is mobile and it is moving to lower wage and lower tax locations abroad. Less U.S. investment (whether from domestic sources or from abroad) means that there are simply fewer good jobs around, leaving many working Americans with limited market power to negotiate better wages.
The impact of this trend is not limited to unskilled or semi-skilled workers in the manufacturing sector either. As emerging countries develop highly skilled labor and adopt technology, the same scenario is playing out for highly- skilled workers in the U.S. Ultimately, this process affects all working Americans, even those whose jobs are not mobile including skilled service providers such as doctors, electricians, lawyers, plumbers and so on because the displaced labor eventually creates an oversupply of candidates for those jobs.
In a global economy where capital investmentand jobs are highly mobile but workers are not, domestic workers are bearing a greater proportion of the corporate income tax burden in the form of limited job opportunities and reduced wages. In fact, recent estimates suggest that approximately 70% of the corporate income tax actually falls on domestic workers. Through the corporation, shareholders can effectively escape the corporate income tax burden by simply allocating or reallocating their investment to lower cost locations abroad. Additional corporate profits derived from investing in lower cost countries flow to shareholders, many of whom do not have to compete with foreign labor (including semi-skilled factory workers and increasing numbers of skilled graduates from top universities in India or China) for jobs. By encouraging foreign investment over U.S. investment, the corporate income tax is effectively exporting good jobs and subsidizing foreign workers at the expense of working Americans. This is why the great majority of Americans who rely upon wages rather than capital as their primary source of income have experienced income stagnation and have failed to benefit from the growth in the U.S. economy over the past three decades. The corporate income tax has become a ball and chain secured to the ankle of every working American. This is the last thing working Americans need as they confront fierce global competition from low wage countries abroad.
The solution is simple: IF IT MOVES, DON’T TAX IT! Let’s go back to the example above and see what happens if the U.S. corporate tax effectively drops to zero. The company still would make $12 pretax in China versus $10 in the U.S., but now look at the after tax results. If they go to China they still clear $9, but if they make the balls in the U.S. they clear $10. Obviously they now make the bowling balls in the U.S., and the U.S. gets the jobs. It is worth $1 per ball for it to do so. Now the company needs to hire workers for the factory. But the U.S. has a high rate of employment – we have lots of jobs, they just aren’t the same kind of relatively high paying jobs that we used to have. So, the factory will have to lure employees away from another company by offering higher pay, better benefits or better conditions. It will thus bid up wages by up to 99 cents per ball or about 14% if it needs to in order to get the necessary workers. Suddenly, instead of trying to hold on to their jobs in the face of competition from low wage foreign competition, working Americans would be in a position to make competing employers bid for their services. In many cases, there would be substantial room for wage growth.

Because U.S. (and foreign) companies have had dramatic increases in productivity over the last 30 years, the labor cost per unit of product produced has fallen greatly. If the labor cost associated with producing a given product is relatively small as compared to other costs, working Americans will be able to demand a greater percentage increase in their wages and still attract the investment for a plant here rather than in China. Assuming the labor costs in our example were reduced by $3 and other costs were increased by $3, yielding the same profit for the company under Shared Economic Growth, U.S. labor could demand a 25% increase in wages and still attract the investment and jobs here rather than China.
Of course, a single example cannot convey the fact that different kinds of operations will come out differently. If a product has a high labor cost and a low profit margin, it will still go to China. But products with a high margin – usually innovative, high tech products – will come to the U.S. The role of tax in the analysis is magnified for such products. The point is that for years we have been told that globalization would make life better for everyone by creating more low skill jobs in developing countries while creating more high skill jobs in the U.S. But we haven’t seen that play out, and the reason is largely that our tax policy has interfered by pushing companies to shift BOTH low margin, low skill operations (for cost reasons) AND high margin, high skill operations (for tax reasons) to other countries. That has caused globalization to result in a race to the bottom, where corporations follow low wages and taxes but leave working Americans effectively underemployed. We need to bring developing countries up, not have them drag us down.
We cannot change the fact that investment is mobile or the fact that most Americans are competing for jobs with lower wage people all over the world. Unless we adapt to these developments, the standard of living of the majority of Americans will fall as investment and jobs continue to migrate to lower-cost locations abroad. As individuals and as a nation, we will not have the resources to address the problems of retirement and health care, nor will we be able to provide our children with the very education and skills they need to succeed in this new age. To adapt, we must change our tax system so that the jobs that either move abroad or are suppressed because of low wages abroad are replaced with better jobs in high-margin knowledge based activities in the U.S.
By reducing or better yet eliminating the corporate income tax, we can dramatically increase the attractiveness of the U.S. as a manufacturing and services location, encourage economic growth and allows working Americans to negotiate for a bigger piece of a growing pie. Globalization really could work for everyone’s benefit. Developing nations would continue to attract investment and jobs and develop their own innovative industries but working Americans would be able to compete for good jobs and pay as well. This will enable working Americans to compete. It is not about protecting working Americans from competition abroad. Working Americans can compete and prosper if we just cut through the corporate income tax chain that holds them down.
As far as the Media outlets (FT and Economist) that have endorsed Obama’s economic plan, I would remind you that they are corporations controlled by shareholders who would rather impose a hidden tax on the middle class through the corporate income tax than face enforced progressivity at the individual level. There is a reason the media, Wall Street and the Warren Buffets of the world support Obama. I do not believe McCain’s plan is perfect (it can do more to attract capital and jobs HERE IN THE US and enforce/improve progressivity) but atleast he is genuinely reducing the hidden corporate tax burden on working americans.
I am just a tax lawyer and a mom. Given the current economic crisis and the coming difficulties associated with unfunded entitlement programs and deficit, I am deeply concerned that without meaningful tax reform our children will “inherit” enormous debt and tax obligations, but they will not have the means (a good job) to pay for it.
So this is what I mean when I say I want to be DEFENDED. Capitalism hasn’t failed, rather it is bad tax policy that has been slowly but surely exporting capital and jobs out of our economy. If we had adopted our tax policy to the global environment, rather than listen to the politicians on both sides of the isle, working americans would have prospered and we would not have had this subprime mortgage crisis or atleast it wouldn’t have been so bad. Let’s not throw out the baby with the bathwater.

The Great Depression became what it was not because of the starting conditions, but mostly because of bad decisions made along the way. Japan didn’t mimic the U.S. policies of higher taxes. The Japanese government kept tariffs low, didn’t raise taxes, and actually cut taxes in the mid-1930s. Although the Japanese economy was affected by the events in the rest of the world, like everyone else, statistics like industrial production actually show more growth during the 1930s than during the 1920s. —–Obama’s plan–He wants a 33% increase in the tax rates on capital gains and dividends, an increase of 16% to 32% in the top payroll tax rate, reinstatement of the death tax with a 45% top rate, and a new payroll tax on employers estimated at 7% to help finance his health insurance plan. He’s also contending for higher tariffs under his protectionist policies.Finally, he would increase corporate taxes by 25%, though American businesses already face the second-highest marginal tax rates in the industrialized world, thus directly harming manufacturing and job creation while weakening demand for the dollar.

Before John McCain’s tour of duty in Vietnam, he married Carol Shepp, a model from Philadelphia. On his 23rd bombing mission over North Vietnam in 1967, McCain was shot down and captured.
While he was imprisoned, Carol was in an auto wreck (1969), thrown through her car’s windshield and left seriously injured. Despite her injures, she refused to allow her POW husband to be notified about her condition, fearing that such news would not be good for him while he was being held prisoner.
When McCain returned to the United States in 1973 after more than five years as a prisoner of war, he found his wife was a different person. The accident “left her 4 inches shorter and on crutches, and she had gained a good deal of weight.”
Yearning to make the grade of admiral, McCain enrolled in the National War College at Fort McNair in Washington, D.C. and underwent physical therapy in order to fly again. The Navy excused his permanent disabilities and reinstated him to flight status, effectively positioning him for promotion.
In his book, The Nightingale’s Song, Robert Timberg chronicled McCain’s post-Vietnam military assignments and some of his “adulterous” behavior leading to his divorce from Carol and marriage to Cindy Hensley.
Timberg wrote, “in the fall of 1974, McCain was transferred to Jacksonville as the executive officer of Replacement Air Group 174, the long-sought flying billet at last a reality. A few months later, he assumed command of the RAG, which trained pilots and crews for carrier deployments. The assignment was controversial, some calling it favoritism, a sop to the famous son of a famous father and grandfather [both were Navy admirals], since he had not first commanded a squadron, the usual career path.”
While Executive Officer and later as Squadron Commander McCain used his authority to arrange frequent flights that allowed him to carouse with subordinates and “engage in extra-marital affairs.” Such behavior was a violation of the Uniform Code of Military Justice rules against adultery and fraternization with subordinates..
Timberg wrote, “Off duty, usually on routine cross-country flights to Yuma and El Centro, John started carousing and running around with women. To make matters worse, some of the women with whom he was linked by rumor were subordinates . . . At the time the rumors were so widespread that, true or not, they became part of McCain’s persona, impossible not to take note of.”
In early 1977, Admiral Jim Holloway, Chief of Naval Operations promoted McCain to captain and transferred him from his command position “to Washington as the number-two man in the Navy’s Senate liaison office. It wasn’t long before the “fun loving and irreverent” McCain had turned the liaison office into a “late-afternoon gathering spot where senators and staffers, usually from the Armed Services and Foreign Relations committees, would drop in for a drink and the chance to unwind.”
In 1979 at a military reception in Honolulu, McCain met Cindy Hensley, an attractive 25-year-old woman from a very wealthy politically-connected Arizona family. Cindy’s father, Jim, founded the Hensley and Company, the nation’s third-largest Anheuser-Busch distributor.
McCain described their first meeting, “She was lovely, intelligent and charming, 17 years my junior but poised and confident. I monopolized her attention the entire time, taking care to prevent anyone else from intruding on our conversation. When it came time to leave the party, I persuaded her to join me for drinks at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. By the evening’s end, I was in love.”
While still married to Carol, McCain began an adulterous relationship with Cindy. He married Cindy in May 1980 — just a month after dumping Carol and securing a divorce. The newlyweds honeymooned in Hawaii.

Now for those of you libs who are historically-challenged, I will now explain. Weeks prior to the 1948 election, many leading editorial writers and political columnists relied on early Gallup Polls, which predicted Thomas E. Dewey’s win over incumbent Harry S. Truman. Truman’s strategy was to bypass the press by taking his case to the people in a “whistlestop” campaign. Mr. Barranger is absolutely wrong about his take on Michelle Obama’s senior sociology thesis. If he had, indeed, read the entire paper, he would have come to a differing view.
Her use of “separationist” and “inclusiveness” refers to black Princeton alumni and their likelihood of returning to the black community to help raise its lot in life, vs. their moving on to the wider world, as their education would allow them to do. It has zero to do with a racist agenda.
I disagree Ms. Obama has a “chip on her shoulder”. Her conclusions support her premise; that few alumni return to their roots in order to serve their community. The paper was written in 1985 (23 years ago), when she was a naive 22 year-old. Even if she did have a chip on her shoulder at the time, she undoubtedly has overcome it.
I know I had such a chip until my mid-twenties; fortunately, I overcame my petulance when I grew into the adult I am today.

From the contrived overreaction to Bill Clinton’s observations that Obama’s Iraq war opposition was a “fairy tale” to similar fake outrage when Mr. Clinton compared Obama’s South Carolina primary win to Jesse Jackson’s;
From the Obama campaign’s pretending to be postracial in public while threatening black superdelegates in private to Obama waiting until black voters vaulted him to the nomination before bashing black fathers with lame stereotypes, the Obama campaign at every turn has sought to use racial politics as a bludgeon, beating the opposition into submission.

The reason for this is to stop harming the environment and for Americans to come up w/ a new technology so that we don’t have to emit carbon into the air (which kills people by the way) McCain would like to do the same thing

In her game-changing convention speech, Sarah Palin took a swipe at Obama for having been nothing more in his life than a ‘community organiser’.
This prompted the Obama campaign to issue a pained defence of community organisation as a way of promoting social change ‘from the bottom up’. The impression is that community organising is a worthy if woolly and ultimately ineffectual grassroots activity. This is to miss something of the greatest importance: that in the world of Barack Obama, community organisers are a key strategy in a different game altogether; and the name of that game is revolutionary Marxism.
The seditious role of the community organiser was developed by an extreme left intellectual called Saul Alinsky. He was a radical Chicago activist who, by the time he died in 1972, had had a profound influence on the highest levels of the Democratic party. Alinsky was a ‘transformational Marxist’ in the mould of Antonio Gramsci, who promoted the strategy of a ‘long march through the institutions’ by capturing the culture and turning it inside out as the most effective means of overturning western society. In similar vein, Alinsky condemned the New Left for alienating the general public by its demonstrations and outlandish appearance. The revolution had to be carried out through stealth and deception. Its proponents had to cultivate an image of centrism and pragmatism. A master of infiltration, Alinsky wooed Chicago mobsters and Wall Street financiers alike. And successive Democratic politicians fell under his spell.
His creed was set out in his book ‘Rules for Radicals’ – a book he dedicated to Lucifer, whom he called the ‘first radical’. It was Alinsky for whom ‘change’ was his mantra. And by ‘change’, he meant a Marxist revolution achieved by slow, incremental, Machiavellian means which turned society inside out. This had to be done through systematic deception, winning the trust of the naively idealistic middle class by using the language of morality to conceal an agenda designed to destroy it. And the way to do this, he said, was through ‘people’s organisations’.
Community organisers would mobilise direct action by the oppressed masses against their capitalist oppressors. In FrontPageMagazine.Com John Perazzo writes:
These People’s Organizations were to be composed largely of discontented individuals who believed that society was replete with injustices that prevented them from being able to live satisfying lives. Such organizations, Alinsky advised, should not be imported from the outside into a community, but rather should be staffed by locals who, with some guidance from trained radical organizers, could set their own agendas.
The installment of local leaders as the top-level officers of People’s Organizations helped give the organizations credibility and authenticity in the eyes of the community. This tactic closely paralleled the longtime Communist Party strategy of creating front organizations that ostensibly were led by non-communist fellow-travelers, but which were in fact controlled by Party members behind the scenes…
Alinsky viewed as supremely important the role of the organizer, or master manipulator, whose guidance was responsible for setting the agendas of the People’s Organization… Alinsky laid out a set of basic principles to guide the actions and decisions of radical organizers and the People’s Organizations they established. The organizer, he said, ‘must first rub raw the resentments of the people; fan the latent hostilities to the point of overt expression. He must search out controversy and issues, rather than avoid them, for unless there is controversy people are not concerned enough to act.’[40] The organizer’s function, he added, was ‘to agitate to the point of conflict’[41] and ‘to maneuver and bait the establishment so that it will publicly attack him as a “dangerous enemy.” ‘[42] ‘The word ‘enemy,’ said Alinsky, ‘is sufficient to put the organizer on the side of the people’;[43] i.e., to convince members of the community that he is so eager to advocate on their behalf, that he has willingly opened himself up to condemnation and derision.
Obama’s connection with Alinsky, whom he never met but whom he reportedly idolised, was through two bodies promoting the Alinsky model of community organisation, ACORN and the Gamaliel Foundation. John Perazzo again:
Obama was trained by the Alinsky-founded Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF) in Chicago and worked for an affiliate of the Gamaliel Foundation, whose modus operandi for the creation of ‘a more just and democratic society’ is rooted firmly in the Alinsky method. As The Nation magazine puts it, ‘Obama worked in the organizing tradition of Saul Alinsky, who made Chicago the birthplace of modern community organizing…’ In fact, for several years Obama himself taught workshops on the Alinsky method.
But Obama brought a special slant to Alinsky’s radicalism.Far from being – as he has been painted – a ‘post-racial’ politician, Obama’s politics are all about promoting the cause of black people and achieving ‘reparations’ from white society (a perspective through which his whole welfare redistribution agenda is framed). Accordingly, he saw his three-year role as a community organiser in Chicago as mobilising black people for action against their white oppressors. Finding himself hampered in creating an activist network among black churches, he decided to join such a church to give himself more credibility. That’s why he joined the infamous black-power Trinity Church of Christ – a move, it seems, that had less to do with any spiritual quest than as a radical tactic for mobilising the black proletariat.
According to Stanley Kurtz in National Review (subscription required), as a trainer for Gamaliel and ACORN Obama used his influence to secure a major increase in funding for both groups. Kurtz writes of Gamaliel, one of the least known yet most influential national umbrella groups for church-based community organizers:
Gamaliel specializes in ideological stealth, and Obama, a master student of Gamaliel strategy, shows disturbing signs of being a sub rosa radical himself. Obama’s legislative tactics, as well as his persistent professions of non-ideological pragmatism, appear to be inspired by his radical mentors’ most sophisticated tactics. Not only has Obama studied, taught, and apparently absorbed stealth techniques from radical groups like Gamaliel and ACORN, but in his position as a board member of Chicago’s supposedly nonpartisan Woods Fund, he quietly funneled money to his radical allies — at the very moment he most needed their support to boost his political career.
Kurtz also quotes Rutgers political scientist Heidi Swarts who, in her book Organizing Urban America: Secular and Faith-based Progressive Movements, lays out the strategy of stealth:
Swarts calls groups like ACORN and (especially) Gamaliel ‘invisible actors,’ hidden from public view because they often prefer to downplay their efforts, because they work locally, and because scholars and journalists pay greater attention to movements with national profiles (like the Sierra Club or the Christian Coalition). Congregation-based community organizations like Gamaliel, by contrast, are often invisible even at the local level. A newspaper might report on a demonstration led by a local minister or priest, for example, without noticing that the clergyman in question is part of the Gamaliel network. ‘Though often hidden from view,’ says Swarts, ‘leaders have intentionally and strategically organized these movements that appear to well up and erupt from below.’
Although Gamaliel and ACORN have significantly different tactics and styles, Swarts notes that their political goals and ideologies are broadly similar. Both groups press the state for economic redistribution. The tactics of Gamaliel and ACORN have been shaped in a ‘post-Alinsky’ era of welfare reform and conservative resurgence, posing a severe challenge to those who wish to expand the welfare state. The answer these activists have hit upon, says Swarts, is to work incrementally in urban areas, while deliberately downplaying the far-Left ideology that stands behind their carefully targeted campaigns.
To avoid seeming like radicals or ‘hippies left over from the sixties,’ Gamaliel organizers are careful to wear conventional clothing and conduct themselves with dignity, even formality. Since liberal social movements tend to come off as naïve and idealistic, Gamaliel organizers make a point of presenting their ideas as practical, pragmatic, and down-to-earth. When no one else is listening, Gamaliel organizers may rail at ‘racism,’ ‘sexism,’ and ‘oppressive corporate systems,’ but when speaking to their blue-collar followers, they describe their plans as ‘common sense solutions for working families.’
If anyone should doubt Obama’s debt to Saul Alinsky, they might ponder this encomium from no less an authority than Alinsky’s own son. In a letter to the Boston Globe, L. David Alinsky wrote of his father’s influence at the Democratic Convention:
All the elements were present: the individual stories told by real people of their situation and hardships, the packed-to-the rafters crowd, the crowd’s chanting of key phrases and names, the action on the spot of texting and phoning to show instant support and commitment to jump into the political battle, the rallying selections of music, the setting of the agenda by the power people.
Barack Obama’s training in Chicago by the great community organizers is showing its effectiveness. It is an amazingly powerful format, and the method of my late father always works to get the message out and get the supporters on board. When executed meticulously and thoughtfully, it is a powerful strategy for initiating change and making it really happen. Obama learned his lesson well.
Obama’s questionable links to various radicals are now well-known: the black power racists Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Fr. Michael Pfleger, the former Weather Underground terrorism supporters Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dorn. On CNN’s Glenn Beck show a few days ago Jerome Corsi, author of Obama Nation, observed:
Obama began his career, his coming out party in 1995, and Ayers and Bernadine Dorn’s home. And then for, you know, some 20 years, Obama has been working with Ayers, certainly since 1995, on a series of foundations: the Annenberg Foundation and the Woods Foundation. The boards of directors together, or in the Annenberg Foundation, Ayers created it, and Obama was on it. And together they spent the money of these foundations to implement their radical socialist agenda.
As EM Forster wrote in a somewhat different context, only connect.
When Hillary Clinton was fighting Obama for the Democratic candidacy, her camp implied that the party would be making a terrible mistake in selecting Obama because, unlike centrist Hillary, he was a left-winger. But Hillary is an even more fervent Alinsky acolyte. In their book The Shadow Party, David Horowitz and Glenn Poe recount how Hillary first met Alinsky through a left-wing church group to which she belonged in high school, and stayed close to him until his death. Indeed, so impressed was she with his beliefs that she wrote a 75-page salute to him in her senior thesis at Wellesley College in 1969, which contained excerpts of the not-yet published Rules for Radicals. She wrote:
If the ideals Alinsky espouses were actualized, the result would be social revolution. Ironically, this is not a disjunctive projection if considered in the tradition of Western democratic theory. In the first chapter it was pointed out that Alinsky is regarded by many as the proponent of a dangerous socio/political philosophy. As such, he has been feared — just as Eugene Debs or Walt Whitman or Martin Luther King has been feared, because each embraced the most radical of political faiths — democracy.
That’s not democracy as we know it, more a Marxist conception of people power. On FrontPage, Perazzo writes:
During her senior year, Hillary was offered a job by Alinsky but chose instead to enrol at Yale Law School. Alinsky’s teachings, however, would remain close to her heart throughout her adult life. According to a Washington Post report, ‘As first lady, Clinton occasionally lent her name to projects endorsed by the Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF), the Alinsky group that had offered her a job in 1968. As a Canadian it really saddens me to see the U.S. taking the panic-ridden and irrational step of electing Obama as President. The U.S. has always been a shining light on a hill. The country that would roll up its sleaves to do the right thing, even if the rest of the world cowered and did nothing.
It is really sad to see the U.S. following in the footsteps of Canada to embrace big government, big taxes, socialized medicine, aggressive gun control, gay marriage, hate laws, and judicial activism.
Too bad all those conservatives voting for Obama didn’t take a look north. They’d be watching gay men necking in busy parks while they take their “wedding” pictures. They’d see 8 hour waits to see a doctor in the emergency wards of Toronto hospitals. They’d see how simple routine surgery gets scheduled 14 months out. They’d see how governments arrest and charge people with hate crimes who object to any part of the radical liberal agenda.
Americans think that Canadians voted for gay marriage–they don’t realize that Canadians had no say in the matter. It was all done by judges. Gay marriage will be a fait accompli in all 50 states, regardless of what individual Americans want. Get used to the French, there will be more of that, too.

My 83-year-old grandmother is voting in North Carolina. She grew up during the depths of American segregation and later was a staunch George Wallace supporter. Jim Macko, I to have a similar story, my wife is white and I am black. My in-laws are Republicans, and they would have never voted for a black man if it wasn’t for me and with being married. Anyhow we were able to talk my wife’s mom into going to a Obama rally in Toledo Ohio and she has now become a closet Obama supporter. She to would never tell my father in-law that she was gonna vote for Barack Obama. Now I love my in-laws to death, they are the nicest people in the world and would do anything for me but they still struggle with race but are doing better. I hope and pray that my in-laws and people like them will get the courage one day to get past their issues with race and judge people by their character like they did me and not the color of their skin. The problem is they never grew up around black people and they dont live in a diverse neighborhood to get to know other people that dont look just like them. I am only 33 years old and I have three wonderful multiracial children and my middle child if you seen her she looks all white, she has blond hair and blues eyes and you would never know she was bi racial and my other two are light skin but you can tell they have black in them and they are all honor roll students and wonderful children and I love the to death. We all have a responsibility to change the mindset that breads racism and it all starts in the home. We as parents must teach our kids that dont live in a diverse neighborhood that they can not believe everything they see on TV about black people, brown people our white people. If we dont educate our children about race then there will always be a certain uneasiness and a lack of education about Americans that dont look our talk like them. Those of us that are having children, if we expect a different result when it comes to race then we must start with our children and they will pass on those values to their children. Where were you people in 1992-1993 when the government shut down most of the coal industry with the clean air act. Thousands of jobs were lost coal mines in the eastern US were shut down. In our area it was cheaper to ship coal from WY to MO than to mine coal 2 miles from the power plant and truck it. Don’t think there are very many of those people who were effected that will care what Obama said now. It is too late for the coal industry.

Sick of Bush: The markets are already picking up and cycling back up. Both Reagan and Clinton cut capital gains taxes and the economies of their time boomed. Capital gains after-tax is what creates new jobs. Otherwise, you can only get a job if someone retires (replacement worker).
Capital gains is just a fancy word for gain from an initial investment of capital (basis). It’s the only money that creates rather than replaces jobs. The only other way id for government to tax the capital gains and provide a government job.
However, government jobs don’t have the highest level of morale among workers.
They are often too understaffed and overworked. Why? Because out of every capital-gain tax dollar the government has bit off 60% to administer the other 40%. Clinton knew it; Reagan knew it.

Showme; Clean coal technology was not around in 92 & 93. We all know that coal fired powerplants kill trees for miles around it. So Clinton shut the plants down instead of investing in clean coal technology (or research). After all, oil was 22 buck a barrell back then and we hadn’t (yet) learned our lessons. I fear now, with the bottom dropping out of oil (again), we’ll go back to that disasterous plan for the “expeditious” sake of it.
