Biden and Napolitano Give Warning About Potential Attacks Involving WMD

ABC NEWS’ MATTHEW JAFFE REPORTS:

Vice President-elect Joe Biden Wednesday warned about the dangers of a terrorist attack involving weapons of mass destruction after a bipartisan report concluded that such an attack is likely to occur somewhere in the world in the next five years.

Biden was in Washington for a briefing by the Commission on the Prevention of Weapons of Mass Destruction Proliferation and Terrorism, which just released a report analyzing whether or not the country is taking every possible measure to prevent such an incident.

"The answer that jumps out very starkly is no," stated the vice president-elect before the briefing, slamming his hand down on the report for emphasis. "We’re not doing all we can or should and we’re not doing all we can to prevent the world’s most lethal weapons from winding up in the hands of terrorists."

"This report is more than a warning about what we’re doing wrong," he continued. "It’s a pragmatic blueprint for how to get it right."

The bipartisan commission, led by former Senators Bob Graham of Florida and Jim Talent of Missouri, was created by Congress to assess the country’s efforts to prevent the spread of WMDs and their use by terrorists. Concluded the task force’s new report, "The Commission believes that unless the world community acts decisively and with great urgency, it is more likely than not that a weapon of mass destruction will be used in a terrorist attack somewhere in the world by the end of 2013."

It was only six weeks ago that Biden guaranteed that if elected, Obama would be tested by an international crisis within his first six months in office. At today’s briefing, the Delaware lawmaker was joined by Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano, President-elect Barack Obama’s nominee for Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.

"The safety of our citizens, the safety of our homeland, and the elimination of the threat of global terrorism is our top priority," said Napolitano.

"The threat of a WMD attack on American soil can be dramatically reduced through a coherent and sustained strategy to improve our vulnerabilities and to adapt to a new and evolving threat," she observed. "It is the wisdom in this report that will help us to do that adaptation."

"We intend to be diligent and creative in our efforts and our measures to protect our homeland," pledged Napolitano, promising to act "urgently" and "deliberately".

"Our adversary has not been standing still – they have accelerated the pace of their progress," cautioned Graham.

"We have been losing ground," he said. "We are less secure today than we have been in the recent past."

At the same time, Graham noted that the report was released "not with the goal of raising a false sense of fear, but rather a cold analysis of the reality of the risks that we face and therefore the urgency to respond to reduce that risk."

"This is a near-term threat," warned Talent. "We use the word ‘urgent’ a lot in this. You know, in this town, the urgent seems to crowd out the important. Well, this is important and urgent and that theme is infused throughout the report."

One week after terrorists believed to have come from Pakistan killed at least 171 people in Mumbai, India, Talent emphasized the importance of a focus on Pakistan.

"A focus on Pakistan is clearly important. And you’ve known this, senator, for years because of your work in foreign affairs," said Talent, turning to Biden, who for years has chaired the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. "It’s the epicenter, the nexus of all these threats right now and it’s deteriorating."

Great. A couple of Republican senators tell us that terrorists would like to use WMD on us if they could get them. I am receiving shocking news. The sky is now falling with this stunning new information.
Bah.

O as mechanic fixing America: “Let’s just tiiiiiighten up that security. Hmmmm…can’t get it to turn just that one more.” Scratches head. Eyes brighten. “Hey, I know! Let’s just get rid of some of those things in the way, then I can get the wrench in there good and solid. Ain’t been used much anyway, all rusted and twisted, half-gone besides thanks to the previous mechanic and wasn’t he just the worst? Took rotten care of this vehicle… Hey, Biden! Get Emanuel over here with some wrenches and cutters, maybe a blowtorch! Need help pulling out these civil liberty stabilizers! And tell the owner he’s darn lucky he didn’t get killed in this thing, but we’ll have everything running right and safe in just a day…or two! Gonna cost a little more than we first estimated, though…”

It is not about republican or democrat. It is a clash between secular (science) based society, and religious fundamentalist society. Terrorism comes from all types of religious fundamentalism (christian, islamic, jewish, etc.)Terrorism is an attempt by religious fundamentalists to hold onto power by scaring people into Theocracies to attack secular society. Fight for your right to science now or die.

OMG – Napolitano vetoed EVERY SIGNIFICANT LEGISLATION needed to protect our borders, cut secret deals with Mexican “officials”, threatened every elected official trying to enforce immigration laws – AND SHE’S GONNA BE IN CHARGE OF OUR NATIONAL SECURITY. I hope we survive the next 4 years…

Did anyone here even listen to Obama during the election regarding terrorism? Its not that it does not exist, its that we have been fighting it in the wrong place, Iraq. We made that area worse. Pakistan is the real epicenter, just look what happened in India. Biden has been working on trying to get Pakistan to be more cooperative for years. Bush’s problem was his false intelligence to make us go to war with Iraq instead of finishing the job in Afganistan and dealing with Pakistan’s problems. Obama wants to out more troops in Afganistan and has kept Bob Gates on as SoD..he is SO darn radical.

To protect ourselves and our planet we must eliminate all weapons of mass destruction – nuclear, biological, chemical – they have all been prohibited. The NPT limits the 10,000 warhead US nuclear arsenal to less than 2,000 by 2010.
Biological and chemical weapons proliferate in our state security and medical aparatus although they are completely prohibited under international law. How can we trust a government official, politician, doctor or scientist who claims to be so wise, that they, and those likeminded people they employ or breech their security, can possess prohibited biological and chemical agents?
The United States needs to eliminate funding research into making animals sick in animal research labs and total prohibit this senseless cruelty to animals that tortures an estimated 10 million humans and kills 500,000 compliments of the American Journal of Physiologcy that desperately needs to be censored and scientists disbarred.
Funding for medical research at universties and federal grant programs should be cut until it is equal with liberal arts. The United States must prohibit and order destroyed all such toxic chemicals, compounds and viruses. We do not need store these deadly compounds, only to be able to identify them forensically, in case they are reintroduced. Forensic studies should be highly controlled, regulated by the proper authorities in the NIH and it is imperative that they do not mass produce them. These uncontrolled substances must be documentedly prohibited and destroyed.
Please prohibit our university, private, and government research and medical labs and services of all causes of seemingly “natural death and disease”. And please keep the Vice President elect away from these love potions. The government should not seize these toxins. The government should prohibit them and order them to be destroyed and verify such destruction with random inspections.

Hospitals & Asylums:
I like your ideas. Governments don’t, though. Hidden or overt (overt usually only because they are exposed by enemies), experiments and developments are big and important. Justification is keeping ahead of the enemy du jour (it’s Iran, wait, Afghanistan, nope, Iraq, oops, Pakistan…), or gaining knowledge and developing innovations to help society. It’s mostly to make neat new things that glow or go boom or make people sick or kill them.
It’s human nature. Joined with opportunity, money and power. A formula that isn’t going to go away, no matter how many protest. The government finds it way more fun to take the toys away from other governments.

Huh ? I thought that there were no WMD.
