ABC NEWS’ MATT JAFFE REPORTS:
At every rally on the campaign trail, Vice President-elect Joe Biden concluded his speeches with the inspirational words of his father.
"Any time you get knocked down, champ, get up!" Biden recalled his father telling him as a young boy.
Clearly the refrain resonated with Biden’s granddaughters.
The kids, given the task of naming the Vice President-elect’s new German Shepherd puppy, gathered the whole Biden family around the tree on Christmas morning to announce that the dog would be named "Champ," said Biden’s spokeswoman Elizabeth Alexander.
Biden got the new pooch a couple weeks ago from a breeder, fulfilling a promise that his wife Jill made to him that if elected, he could get a puppy.
But one won’t be enough…
The Delaware lawmaker recently told George Stephanopoulos in an interview on "This Week" that he will also get a second dog after the January inauguration, likely a Golden Retriever for his wife.
"We’re going to have more than one puppy," Biden said.
"I’ve had German Shepherds since I was a kid and I’ve actually trained them and shown them in the past," Biden told Stephanopoulos. "So I wanted a German Shepherd and we’re going to get a pound dog, which my wife wants, who is hopefully a Golden [Retriever]."
Meanwhile, President-elect Barack Obama has also promised to get his daughters a new puppy, but will wait until they have moved into the White House to do so.
