At Least for Now, Franken Pulls Ahead

ABC News’ Rick Klein and Teddy Davis Report: Despite trailing by a narrow but consistent margin since Election Day, Democrat Al Franken has pulled ahead of Sen. Norm Coleman, R-Minn., in the seemingly never-ending recount in Minnesota, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports.

Could Franken actually pull this off?

In short, yes — but the current unofficial margin of 250 votes is almost certain to drop as the counting and re-counting — and the raft of legal challenges — go on, and on. It’s very possible that the last remaining race from the 2008 elections won’t be settled until 2009.

This from Coleman spokesman Mark Drake: "While varying headlines and a flurry of different numbers will continue, we encourage everyone to just hang on until the process is finished. When it is finished, Norm Coleman will still lead, and we believe, be re-elected to the United States Senate.”

Franken’s lead is expected to increase throughout the day Friday, because the Canvassing Board is reviewing Coleman’s challenges. Most challenges fail, and when that happens, the other candidate is awarded the vote in the official tally.

Monday is a big day in front of the Canvassing Board, with two items on the agenda. This is technical stuff, but here goes:

1. The campaigns are withdrawing challenges to roughly 4,000 previously contested ballots. When a campaign withdraws its challenge, it allows the local official’s original determination to be recorded, benefiting the opponent of the candidate withdrawing the challenge. This step will benefit Coleman, since the majority of these withdrawn challenges were withdrawn by Franken.

2. The Minnesota Canvassing Board will review additional challenges from Coleman and Franken that were brought late this week. More of these challenges were brought by Coleman (roughly 200) than by Franken (roughly 50). This step of the process will likely net some votes for Franken, since most challenges fail.

Bottom line: Coleman is expected to gain ground on Monday — a point the Franken campaign concedes.

The big question –- which we will not know until Monday -– is whether Coleman will gain enough to regain the lead.

With Congress set to convene in new session Jan. 6, Gov. Tim Pawlenty, R-Minn., said his staff was researching the possibility of a temporary appointment.

Pawlenty said, however, that it was unlikely he would do so because he expected the recount would be resolved by then.

When asked how they simply said they showed up with a piece of mail or a credit card bill showing their place of residence to be somewhere in Minnesota. If Franken wins I hope that a recall election with everyone REQUIRED to be confirmed a U.S. Citizen prior to the election in this state occurs. I hope if this happens we also have a recount of who we voted for for president.

I know it is hard for you liberals to agree with anything in The Constitution, but we actually have something called the Electoral College. It determined that Bush won.
Our fear with MN is that every new vote that turns up mysteriosly seems to go 100% for Franken. ACORN and other nuttty left-wing groups like them have been implicated in so many fraudulent elections, that our fears are more than justified. That, and the fact that we don’t want a quack like Franken in office will keep us fighting til the end.

Posted by: dave | December 19, 2008, 4:02 pm 4:02 pm

I do think that Bush stole the election and remember being told that I was just a whining Democrate at the time. Once they finish recounting all the ballots (including wrongly rejected absentee ballots), I am hopeful that Franken will win. I live in MN and the media is all over the story every day and the Sec. of State and canvassing board are being as transparent as possible in the recounting process. My larger point is that as soon as the Republicans think they may lose, then there must shady dealings going on.

Posted by: shoeontheotherfoot | December 19, 2008, 4:03 pm 4:03 pm

Franken is winning in the very same way Bush did in 2000. By counting previously rejected absentee votes. In 2000 the Bush campaign forced the counting of hundreds of overseas ballots in Florida that came in AFTER the deadline, or lacked signatures, or other issues. These ballots were in clear violation of Florida election law.
Now the Republican’s are crying like stuck pigs when the tables are being turned on them. LOL

Anyone who is college educated can do a better job than most of our corrupt public officials. Franken went to Harvard, and he is a brilliant man. He’s not Jesse Ventura. Typical bad math by a journalism major!
That’s like saying your second child will most likely be a girl if your first was a boy. It’s still about 50:50.
I’m no fan of Franken, but it’s as least as likely the 250 vote margin will increase as it is that it will decrease.
And, considering the recounting has been consistently edging in Franken’s favor, it’s actually more likely the 250 vote will increase than decrease.

Dan
It’s people like Al Franken and you(liberals) that have kept horrific dictators in power for far too long, and have cost millions of deaths.
Liberals invited ahmadenijead to speak at columbia college. He has openly denied the holocaust and enthusiastically called for a “real” one to take place. Liberals gave him a better reception then they would have given george bush.
America pulled out prematurely of Vietnam, succumbing to liberal pressure, only to leave the South Vietnamese exposed to the takeover by the communist north. The result, “reeducation” camps, teachers hung in front of their students, and millions of people slaughtered.
The liberals were rejoicing in the streets of America at their victory of troop withdrawl while the south vietnamese were being destroyed.
Liberals have been against Iraq from the start. Even if they had found WMD’s, liberals would have argued “how do we know he will use them?” They could not care less that we DID find mustard gas and the bodies of 700,000 people murdered by saddam’s chemical weapons. Or all of the torture chambers that will now never hold another prisoner.
Liberals will NEVER understand that “peace is not the absence of conflict but the presence of justice”. Believe me, saddam dead and rotting in a hole in the ground is justice.
Thank you Mr. Bush for keeping us safe!

You cons have your nerve talking about ‘stealing’ an election. Your party, the Republicans, wrote the book on stealing elections. Norm Coleman is an unqualified jerk. Franken is to be commended for standing up to him and not just rolling over like a lot of Democrats do when the vote is close. I pray Franken can pull off an honest to goodness upset. He would be a much better senator than Coleman.

Posted by: JL | December 19, 2008, 4:58 pm 4:58 pm

It’s bad enough that the Republican Party can’t prevent Democrats from voting in its primaries and saddling us with The New York Times’ favorite Republican as our presidential nominee. If the Republican Party can’t protect an election won by the incumbent U.S. senator in Minnesota, there is no point in donating to the Republican Party.
The day after the November election, Republican Sen. Norm Coleman had won his re-election to the U.S. Senate, beating challenger Al Franken by 725 votes.
Then one heavily Democratic town miraculously discovered 100 missing ballots. And, in another marvel, they were all for Al Franken! It was like a completely evil version of a Christmas miracle.
As strange as it was that all 100 post-election, “discovered” ballots would be for one candidate, it was even stranger that the official time stamp for the miracle ballots printed out by the voting machine on the miracle ballots showed that the votes had been cast on Nov. 2 — two days before the election.
Democratic election officials in the miracle-ballot county simply announced that their voting machine must have been broken. Don’t worry about it — they were sure those 100 votes for Franken were legit.
Then another 400-odd statistically improbable “corrections” were made in other Democratic strongholds until — by the end of election week — Coleman’s lead had been whittled down to a mere 215 votes.
Since then, highly irregular counting methods have added to Franken’s total bit by bit, to the point that Coleman is now ahead by only 188 votes.
As long as Coleman maintains any lead at all, Republicans don’t seem to care that Coleman’s advantage is being shrunk by laughable ballot “discoveries” and disreputable standard-switching from precinct to precinct — depending on which method of counting ballots is most advantageous to Franken.
Consider a few other chilling examples of Democrats thieving their way to victory over the years.
In 1974, Republican Louis Wyman won his race for U.S. Senate in New Hampshire, beating Democrat John Durkin by 355 votes. Durkin demanded a recount — which went back and forth by a handful of votes until the state’s Ballot Law Commission concluded that Wyman had indeed won by (at least) two votes.
Wyman was certified the winner by the New Hampshire secretary of state and was on his way to Washington when … the overwhelmingly Democratic U.S. Senate refused to seat Wyman.
Despite New Hampshire’s certification of Wyman as the winner of the election, this was the post-Watergate Senate, when Democrats could get away with anything — up to and including a prank known as “President Jimmy Carter.”
The U.S. Senate spent months examining disputed ballots from the New Hampshire election. Unable to come up with a method to declare the Democrat the winner that didn’t require a guillotine, the Senate forced New Hampshire to hold another election.
It was a breathtaking abuse of power. New Hampshire had certified a winner of its Senate election, but it was a Republican, so the Democratic Senate simply ordered a new election.
Demoralized Republicans stayed away from the race and, this time, the Democrat won the re-vote.
Even more egregious was the Indiana House race in 1984. On election night, the incumbent Democrat Frank McCloskey appeared to have won a narrow victory of 72 votes. But after a correction was made in one county, it turned out his Republican opponent, Richard McIntyre, had won by 34 votes.
McIntyre was certified the winner — which is when the trouble usually starts for a Republican.
Again, a majority Democrat House refused to seat the certified winner in a close election. I’m sure it was just a coincidence that the winner was a Republican.
Consequently, Indiana performed yet another recount of the entire district, which again showed that Republican McIntyre was the winner — this time by 418 votes. Now he was really asking for it. The nerve of this guy! Hey, buddy, do you mind? We’re trying to throw an election over here!
As The Washington Post reported at the time: There were “no allegations of fraud” in the recount and 90 percent of ballot disqualifications had been agreed to “by election commissions dominated by Democrats.”
So naturally the House refused to seat the Republican even though he had received the most votes (hereinafter referred to as “the winner”). The House proceeded to conduct its own recount. (If you haven’t detected a pattern by this point, please ask your doctor if Prilosec is right for you.)
This time, instead of ordering the district to hold another election, the Democratic House saved all concerned a lot of time and money by simply declaring Democrat Frank McCloskey the winner by four votes.
The vote-theft most like Minnesota this year was the infamous 2004 gubernatorial election in Washington State. The Republican won the race on election night, but ballots favoring the Democrat kept being “discovered” until the Democrat finally eked out a majority. At that point, the recount was immediately halted and the Democrat declared the victor.
You would have to go back to Reconstruction to find an election that was stolen by the Republicans this way, but it’s all in a day’s work for the Democrats.
That’s why they were so testy about the 2000 Florida election. It was the one time in the last century Republicans wouldn’t let Democrats steal an election they lost by less than a thousand votes.
No matter how many times Democrats steal elections, Republicans keep thinking the next time will be different. Minnesota is famously clean, isn’t it? It must be different. It’s not different. It’s still the Democrats.

The election was Coleman’s to lose and he tried hard to do so by putting out terrible negative ads against Franken. Then he had a change of heart and withdrew those ads, but people saw through that. His next ads were whiny, about how could anybody vote for somebody without experience. Hey, we voted for you the first time around! Coleman is decent as a senator, but his tactics turned off people I knew who were then determined to vote against him.

Minn was one of the states targeted by ACORN in their massive voter fraud efforts that helped the marxist drug addict steal the election, so it is not a surprise that these criminal efforts are having an effect on the Senate race.
In a perverted sense, one must admit that franken, if the ACORN fraud prevails, could become the best symbol of the d-crat party: a pathetic, non-funny clown. He’ll also provide a better meaning to their jackass symbol.

How in the world could that many people be dumb enough, to vote for Al Franken ? I don’t care “which” party he’s with, he’s a world class moron, and those that aren’t aware of that, must have been living in a cave. Think about it, would you “really” want a goof ball like Franken, in the Senate ? But of course we have to remember, this stupidity is coming from people that voted for Jesse Ventura, to be their Governor, so go figure. Are the people in Mn. drinking their own water again ? This is a classic example of how sometimes, you can’t trust average everyday people with the vote, whether they have the right to that vote, or not. Many are just not smart enough to make the right choice, that should be obvious. Another example: “Obama” ! Some of the people in this country are getting more and more bass ackwards, every year.

Basically, it’s up to you to show that the election is stolen. People here seem sure of that, but no one has put forward any evidence. It’s just a wild claim.
If asking for evidence is trolling, OK, I’m trolling.

I’ve heard Franken himself speak and he’s well informed and on top of the issues.
I’m not trying to convince anyone to like Franken. I’m just trying to get people who talk about a stolen election to put up or shut up. They almost never know what they’re talking about and very seldom even bother to try to justify their insulting and dishonest claims.

Franken has no experience in politics and the people voting for him are as nutty as he is. He should stick to comics and he is not good at that. Didn’t Dean give Obama some of Hillary’s delegates she won in MI and FL to make sure she didn’t win? Get a grip. Obama is one of the worst backhanded candidate that ran for office.

What kind of trouble are the Democrats in? If Franken wins they’ll have 59 Senators. Wake up, lady.
People who have met Franken, have heard him speak, or have seen him on TV realize that he is a serious candidate.
And Stuart Smalley is fiction.
You think that Minnesota voters are idiots, and Minnesota voters think you’re an idiot. It all makes sense.

ann:
You are officially recognized as
a plagerist!
You copied verbatim Ann Coulters
column fromthe Sunday papers without
referring to her!
She happens to be wrong about
John McCain! It’s fools like Coulter
who preferred to sit on their hands
than vote for McCain that cost him the
election! A candidate doesn’t have to agree with you on every issue!
Pragmatism wins elections not ideology!

What is wrong with this country? Our stupid people cannot fill out a simple ballot that has been dumbed down to the nth degree. Oh, wait, I forgot. Filling out a ballot requires you to READ. Never mind.
Second question, somewhat related to the first, why is it that it always seems to be Democrats who can’t figure out how to properly mark a ballot or punch out a stupid card in the proper place? And they are the ones who bray that Bush is stupid? Do we have to make the voting process into a silly video game for them so they can finally understand it?
All the bad ballots would be hilarious if it weren’t so pathetic.

It seems a bit far fetched, but I wonder if George Lucas used Mr Franken looks and manner of speaking as a model for the odious creature in Star Wars? Does Mr Franken remind anyone else of Jabba the Hut?
