Future First Family Denied Early Move-In at the Blair House

The Obamas are coming to Washington — and it will be earlier than expected. Sources say that the future first lady, Michelle Obama, places utmost importance on a smooth transition to D.C. life for her two daughters. Part of that transition is making sure that Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, start school on time — the first week in January.

ABC News has learned that the future First Family has been denied a request to move in early to the Blair House –- the traditional temporary housing of President-elects in Washington, DC.

Sources tell ABC News that the Obama Transition Team "explored the idea" of moving President-elect Obama and his family to the nation’s capital earlier than normal for an incoming president because of the start of the school year for daughters, Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7. Students at Washington’s Sidwell Friends are slated to return to school after Winter break on Monday, January 5.

Since the Bushes aren’t leaving their current abode for their new home in Dallas before Inauguration day on Jan. 20, the Obamas need somewhere to temporarily live. Sources say that officials at the Obama Transition Team asked if the Obamas could stay at the Blair House starting around Jan. 5th so that the girls could start school on schedule.

By tradition the Blair House is the President’s guest house for visiting dignitaries and is reserved for the President-elect’s use starting on Jan. 15.

The White House conveyed to the Obama team that due to previously scheduled events and guests that couldn’t be displaced from the Blair House; they could not meet their request.

Officials of the Obama Transition Team say there are no hard feelings and insist that the White House has been friendly and accommodating to the Obama family’s needs.

The Obamas are still actively looking into other options and while plans could change they are still shooting to have their daughters present –- with a DC zip code — on the first day of school.

– Sunlen Miller, Jake Tapper and Ann Compton

UPDATE:

The Blair House says that they are ready for the Obamas whenever — if ever — they choose to come, yet they have no idea when that will be.  They also confirm that there are no other foreign dignitaries scheduled to stay at the Blair House for the duration of the Bush administration.

The president often hosts receptions on the first floor of the Blair House, however — which may be why the White House was not comfortable with allowing the Obamas to move in when there were scheduled events.

But the Blair House describes the president-elect’s residential quarters within the house as a separate area — purposely designed to provide privacy from the rest of the house. Still, the White House insists that, regardless of the set-up, the dates are non-negotiable, as is tradition.

“Blair House is available for them on January 15th,” says Sally McDonough, spokeswoman to Laura Bush.

If and when the Obamas decide to move in on the 15th, an elegant home on the second story awaits them.

“The Principal Suites” — where the president-elect and future first lady sleep, is a pair of adjoining rooms. The president-elect’s room, decorated in dark blues, is outfitted with an antique four-poster bed, a fireplace, a collection of Wedgwood vases, elegant portraits adorning the walls … and a new flat-screen TV. The future first lady’s suite also has an antique four-poster bed and is decorated in shades of pale yellow and pinks.

The Obama daughters would have their choice: to share a pale-blue room with two twin beds or each have their own modest room.

“The Private Library” is a family sitting room where the future first family could spend time together.  There is a kitchen and brand new bathrooms recently updated.  On the third floor is a private exercise room and beauty parlor.

What about the Obamas staying in a secured hotel for about 3 weeks? You don’t have to do any laundry, dishes, and such.

Oh well, not like it’s a big deal. So they have to rent somewhere else for a few weeks… *shrug*
I’m absolutely certain that the Obamas will have no trouble finding a place to stay (or affording one) until they can move into their home.

More ridiculousness on the part of the Obamas. Here’s a suggestion: Acknowledge that your children are now subject to the challenges and problems of the newest leader of the free world, and so, moving heaven and earth to try to pretend that they are just regular folks like the rest of us is a little too much. Then ask Sidwell Friends to provide reading and homework assignments for the girls until they can move into the White House. Why so complicated? Because the Obamas are already acting like royalty. God help us.

Gosh, I am so worried about them. Why don’t they camp out at a homeless shelter? After all, isn’t Obama – and his wife for that matter – “one of the people.” Maybe they see see FIRST HAND how the poor of this country live, instead of paying lip service to them.

One thing we know with absolute certainty, saresse, is that YOU are not going to save this country. As far as “such-a-group”, is it not explicitly they who believe that religious affiliation is hereditary and unalterable? And so also do you?
It is indeed unfortunate given the current crisis – that the Bush Administration could not have to grace to make such an accomodation. But Hoover was rather like this also.

History always tells the truth about Presidents. Bush is and has been an excellent leader for the past 8 years. Tried as they may – the liberal media just couldn’t get ‘sticky’ dirt on Bush and it drove them insane. Thank you George W. Bush for be our President. May you live a long and healthy life.

It is so distressing to read some of the hate-infused comments about the president-elect and his family. Is it really possible to imbibe such pernicious hate based solely on the color of one’s skin, religion or political views–especially in this day and age? I pity you for the misery in which you find yourselves.

I don’t understand why the Obama’s can’t start moving into the White House. I’m sure that Bush and Cheney are about due for another vacation before their permanent vacation. After everything this country has been through in 8 years, Bush will still be remembered as the President who took more vacation time than ANY President in history. Truly shameful.

yes – Bush and Cheney will go to jail – to visit BHO and his cronies. The ‘one’ hasn’t even changed his underwear in the WH yet and he and his cronies are already showing their criminal intentions. The media created this mess we are now in. Amazing how the liberal media has the Illinois mess listed on their face page ‘somewhere’. Fox news is about the only news agency that has the ##### to put it right out front. BTW – can’t tell me Bush & Cheney are the ones that created this financial mess. Check your facts – Barney Frank had his stubby prints all all over that.

To all the hateful ignorant and apparently democrat posters in this thread…it is tradition that the President leave the White house on Inauguration Day — all recent presidents have done that INCLUDING Clinton.
It is also tradition that the President Elect stay at Blair house starting on January 15. The White House can’t rearrange tradition and their whole schedule and everyone else’s that is involved. Blair house has probably been booked for months if not years — you can’t just “kick out” dignitaries who were told they would be staying there on a certain date. I am sure the Obama’s understand this and it will not be a horrible inconvenience for them to find accommodations for 10 days until they can move into Blair House. I dread the next 4 to 8 years of rude ignorant democrats — ugh.

You know, read the unclassified report released today about the treatment of detainees in U.S. custody (co-sponsored by the ONE’s opponent, McCain). I would be inclined to say that before any of Obama’s ‘associates’, which Blago is not, go to jail, you might see more of GW’s associates headed that way for war crimes. Myers, Rumsfeld, Sanchez, Gonzales, a whole host of people named in a Senate report as having broken international and federal law.

There’s a sense of Obama&Co trying to push their way into office sooner than the appointed time. To date there’s been no indication that Obama even has a clue what to do in the job. Okay, first, kool-aid is not a racial pejorative. Kool-aid drinkers are ideological nuts who are incapable of rational thought. The term comes from the members of the Jim Jones cult who committed mass suicide by drinking Kool Aid that had poison in it.
And second, the fact that “Americans see the perspective” is precisely the problem in America now because all most of them can see is their own perspective. Most Americans, about 60% (30% are far left radical nuts, and 30% are far right reactionary nuts) are incapable of objectively seeing reality. Both extreme ideologies are incapable of independent rational thought. They are so ideological that the only perspective they see is what they already believe (instead of believing and understanding what they see), so they distort and pervert reality to fit into their twisted perceptions. Wanting to move to DC early so the children can start school on time is perfectly reasonable. Asking if they could move in early to Blair House – the traditional residence of the President elect, a place that already has security in place – is also perfectly reasonable. The ONLY way to find out if Blair House would be available was to freaking ask, so asking was perfectly reasonable! Stop drinking your kool-aid and try thinking rati0nally – both sides!

B K—your use of the word “Kool Aid” is not pejorative, you carefully explained it and placed it in context. but if a white person said “Kool Aid” to an African-American it would be a different story. “Kool Aid” has been used in a racist way in a racist context by racists. but what you wrote is thought provoking and worth thinking about.

Why doesn’t Obama put up a tent on the Whitehouse front lawn and call it the Residence of the President-Elect ? I can’t remember any President-Elect who had such a hardon to get into office so quick. He’s a freakin millionaire. Can’t he rent a suite at the Hilton ?

George Bush showing us what a spiteful little man he is. That shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone.
I’m not a fan of the Obamas but this is the tradition and the girls do have to start school and need appropriate security and safety while they do so.
George needs to grow up and let them move in.

Obama is so anxious to get his hands into our money on Capital Hill! Tradition, Obama, Tradition! Just 35 more days! And, don’t you already have some place to call Home in DC, as you had been a Senator?

This as to be the most juvenile comment threads I’ve seen outside of Facebook.
It was a reasonable request, and Blair House would be an easier place for the secret service to secure than a random hotel. To impugn any motive other than getting the girls settled in school for the next semester is ridiculous. Grow up.

Despite fighting against school choice for average Americans, the rich Obama sends his kids to a private school. Typical liberal hypocrisy.

..then i guess cutting in line is a “a reasonable request”..
..but take it to a higher level..the current president still has use for his long-ago schedule of friends..etc..
and why shoud the current president..which has never ever been done before.. totally disrupt..the long time planned events schedules at blair house…??..
eh?…i take what you see as a “a reasonable request” ..as a another lack of judgement and arrogance by O..!!!

Well, us regular folks don’t get special treatment for our housing issues. We have to be responsible & figure out how to put a roof over our heads. We don’t get special consideration for our issues. How come the Obamas think they rate so special that it doesn’t pertain to them? They forget what it’s Like for the regular folks already ????

Posted by: disgusted in Ohio | December 11, 2008, 10:46 pm 10:46 pm

Why is anyone attacking Obama over sending his kids to private school? The DC area is not very nice, and the schools are gang infested. You think the children of the president should go there? Imagine the headache for the secret service.

All of these moronic, hateful comments because the Obamas can’t move into a house early. You would think after all of the negativity over the past two years people could get a grip on themselves and their emotions. It’s nobody’s fault and certainly not Bush’s fault that they cannot be accomodated. Get over it. They will not be left out in the cold. They, the Obamas, are not whining about it but alot of you seem to be. I guess some people will never be happy and will always look for a reason to spew their hate.

Yet another pitiful demonstration of spite and arrogance by a cabal that has sullied, beyond belief, the Presidency and the White House.
I’m sure there are a few million folks in the vicinity that would find it an honor to open their homes to the man and his family that truly will restore “dignity” to the White House.
The posts in this thread are merely indicative of the obvious, severe depression that the troglodytes that remain are feeling when they look at the current polling and see how the vast majority (OVER SEVENTY PERCENT) regard the failure of DimSon and the respect, at the same proportion, with which they hold the incoming President-Elect, Barack Hussein Obama II .

Doug: “It’s nobody’s fault and certainly not Bush’s fault that they cannot be accomodated. ”
While I agree it’s hardly a big deal (living in a hotel for a few weeks is bearable, it’s the secret service who’ll probably be most annoyed) it is, in fact and reality, entirely Bush’s “fault”/decision.

garand911, Um, in case you haven’t noticed what the state of the country is? You know, your GOP Senators just crashed the auto bailout bill, so Obama has an even bigger mess to clean up, so he’s got to prepare the transition so it’s smooth and quick.

The Obama family was understanding and not offended, they understand President Bush’s position. And the update indicates that the President has made the Blair House available to the Obama family immediately.
Why don’t we take the example of the President and the President-Elect as a model for how to get along in peaceful coexistence.

For one thing you talk about our housing problem who put us in this mess BUSH not OBAMA and some of the people that are losing there homes have over extended themselves and now are paying the price when you buy a home you really can’t afford and then the economy starts to slump is it not there fault for thinking they could afford a 500,000 dollar home instead of say a 250,000 dollar home get real. I’m not saying that everyone did that but the majority did live beyond there means and I feel sorry for the ones that are just falling onto hard times. EJ

Then ask Sidwell Friends to provide reading and homework assignments for the girls until they can move into the White House. Why so complicated? Because the Obamas are already acting like royalty. God help us.”

Posted by: William J. LePetomane | December 12, 2008, 2:30 pm 2:30 pm

What a lot of fuss over nothing. It was simply a request, and not an inreasonable one considering how massive the White House and property is. They presumably have a ton of room. Yes, they could spend a fortune on renting a house or a hotel, but they seem to be pretty conscientious about spending. That is a very admirable trait in a president.
I’m pleased to see that the Obama’s are showing so much concern for their daughters’ adjustment. That’s an aweful lot of change for anybody, let alone girls of their age.
In response to one reader: the Obama’s sent their child to private school (even though they are supposedly against school choice) because their girls’ safety is at great risk due to their father’s position. Most of us would have been appauled if they had made any other choice.

If the people who run Blair House are agreeable I can see no reason why the Obamas shouldn’t be able to stay there sooner than Jan.15 so the girls can start school on time. The family quarters at Blair House are not being used then it is a very reasonable request, too much red tape I think is going on. It is up to the Bush family to see that this should happen, they are gracious enough and can understand the situation if it was their girls adjustment I think they would understand.

american citizen,
Clinton was in the Blair House by Dec 7th. Reagan moved in before January 15th too. Hardly a tradition.
Nobama, get a clue. How troublesome do you think it will be for the security to stay at a hotel? They will have to block off an entire floor or more. Blair House will be easier to secure. It’s so big, I don’t see why they can’t spare a few rooms.
Just a stupid snub from the Shrub who knows he is going to be irrelevant at noon, January 20th, 2009.

The Obama team has no class, every news outlet has the same story, “a source close to the Obama team has revealed that they were denied the Blair house”… so what’s their agenda because the Bush’s didn’t fall over themselves and kick out people and cancel plans they already booked the Obama spin machine has gone out of it’s way to tell the press that the King in waiting Obama was denied something, how dare the White-House not know they are dealing with the new king and he can’t be said no to or his propagandist ( the national press) will go into attack mode to any and all who disturb The King … I mean President in waiting.

Posted by: paula | December 13, 2008, 1:27 am 1:27 am

If the Obamas wanted to move to Washington early they should have reserved Blair house two months ago, as soon as the election was over. They knew that school would begin again the first week in January and that their daughters needed to be in their new school when the semester begins. It is their fault that they can’t move into Blair house. They just waited too late to reserve it!

Posted by: carlyonsue | December 13, 2008, 2:47 am 2:47 am

tom,
Seriously, when you suggested Obama move into a hotel, did you remember the security detail and the fact that D.C hotels are all FULL for said person’s inauguration? Some people are coming down weeks earlier. Not to mention that a hotel is harder to secure and it will be troublesome for other people staying there.
It’s a reasonable request they made. Otherwise they would have to make three moves. Move to some location in D.C, to the Blair House, then one more time to the White House. It’s harder for the girls to get settled.
Yeah, Paula, did you read the news articles involved? Apparently there were NO DIGNITARIES staying in the Blair House, in other words, it’s EMPTY. However, it seems Bush’s associates want to host parties in the lobby there before they have to leave or something. They can have the lobby. Blair House is so big, I don’t see why they can’t give Obama a few rooms. I don’t know who would have higher priority then the next US President, actually.
Bush’s father was considerably more gracious, as I have mentioned earlier, and allowed Clinton to move in on DEC 7th 1992. It’s not been a tradition that all Pres-elects have moved in only five days before. I would think Bush could be more helpful to accomodate the girl’s needs.

Posted by: Grey Matter | December 13, 2008, 6:02 am 6:02 am

@dee — IF you think Bush is the reason the US is, as you put it ” hated “, then you don’t know much about what’s been going on, since the 70′s, at least. The world view was negative BEFORE Bush, it will still be negative WITH Obama in office. If you could see through the partisan haze, you would know world-hatred or poor opinion equates mostly with jealousy. Do some reading and you will see what I mean. ps, and why do you care what others’ think of us anyhow ? IF you’re hoping somehow we’re going to be loved and respected soon, don’t hold your breath.

Posted by: rannan3 | December 13, 2008, 6:24 am 6:24 am

The Bush family has zero class — why is anyone surprised?

Posted by: Go back to Texas | December 13, 2008, 7:25 am 7:25 am

rannan3,
Well, I’m a foreigner speaking here, and I can assure you poor world view is not due to “jealousy”. If anything, any jealousy is because we feel the US is exploiting the under-developed countries- Iraq for instance, was a poorly-covered up attempt for Bush to get more Middle-Eastern oil, in my opinion- while the US is a rich country (even though you may be in a recession). Or that Bush is silent on genocide in Sudan. Or that he’s been uncooperative with United Nations and refuses to uphold habeas corpus.
And I’ll assure you, my opinion of the United States has indeed improved with the election of Obama- who represents a more pragmatic, and diverse face of America. Why do you think Al-Qaeda went out of its way to insult Obama? It’s because they realise that their accusations that America is a racist country kind of falls flat when said “racist” country just elected a black President who had a Muslim father and has Hussein for his middle name.

Posted by: Alice | December 13, 2008, 7:39 am 7:39 am

Why would the Bush’s do anything to accomodate this man. He has spewed hate toward the Bushes during the entire campaign. Regardless, I don’t think the Obama’s should be in any hurray to move anyway. After the canary sings during this Blagovich thing, there may not be an inauguration day.

Posted by: susan | December 13, 2008, 8:45 am 8:45 am

Susan, it’s not Bush doing anything for Obama – it’s the President of the United States accomodating the President Elect. I know you’re used to the White House being run like a personal fiefdom, but it’s not supposed to be that way, and it won’t be after Jan. 20th.

Posted by: Suzanne | December 13, 2008, 9:13 am 9:13 am

Your strained reasoning suggests that it would cost the the taxpayers nothing for Bush to host staff parties at the Blair House, but the Obama’s staying there will cost us “rent.” Jesus. Get a clue.

OK we have established that former president elects have been allowed to move into Blair House before the 15th.I think it follows that this is simply the Crawford version of the Texas Two Step..its irrelevant..And by the way ..Michelle obama is far from out of control…who ever you are I can assure you that if she were out of control you’d wish you’d lived in another country. Why do we waste all our time on dumb stuff when this country is on the verge of the finacial abyss?? Let’s get back to work and someone tell the banls they need to lend money again ..oh and by the way..who exactely is buying all those foreclosed homes..we can and should be doing better as a country.

The “January 15th” tradition claim for Blair House is complete BS. Clinton and Reagan had access way before Jan 15th. If the GOP and Bush’s were really “Country First”, they’d be giving everyone the boot from Blair House to give the president-elect every possible thing he needs to get off to a good and secure start.

The Obama’s aren’t qualified to move into Blair house or even the White House, since he is not “ELGIBLE” to be the President. Let’s see the “ORIGINAL” Birth Certificate.

Wow! I still remember the news reports that questioned whether or not the Reagans would even vacate the White House AFTER Inauguration Day! Apparently Nancy felt she needed more time to get properly packed and wanted to stay an extra week or two! Needless to say, that was a no-go. Allowing the Obama’s to move into Blair House to accomodate the girls’ school schedule does not seem unreasonable. Are the Bushes trying to uphold the “traditions” of their heroes, the Reagans? For shame!

As always, the Bush’s behavior is appalling. We could be moving forward as a nation and can not afford the luxury of this Lame Duck lingering any longer …. they should go home already!

Let’s not make mountains out of mole hills here. President Bush should not have to rearrange his life for the Obama family. He earned his spot in the White House fair and square, just like Obama. The school year started in September, not January so what difference will two weeks make for the Obama girls? My kids have had to move across the country in the middle of the school year and they adapted just fine.

There was ‘no room at the inn’ for the first Messiah either.

Posted by: Yoshi | December 13, 2008, 10:45 pm 10:45 pm

Lets see, what these girls deserve such accomodation? There are starving kids all over this country. There are honest folks without work and unable to provide ediquate house and food for their children. They are babies that parents cannot afford to buy them formula. and we have to hear this BS that Ms Obama wants her girls in this “elite” school on time. I wish they would read e-mail like this, they should be ashamed of themselves. YEP, LETS SEE HIS ORIGINAL BIRTH CERTIFICATE NOW.

Posted by: unemployed | December 13, 2008, 11:38 pm 11:38 pm

The Obama’s asked and the answer was no can do. So now they can get a hotel room for a week or so. I don’t even see how this is news worthy except to the liberal based media types.

TO ERIC
WHAT IS THE MATTER WITH YOU PEOPLE, AFTER 8 YEARS OF TOTAL HELL WITH THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION AND NOW WE HAVE A GREAT CHANCE TO GET OUT OF THE MESH THE COUNTRY IS IN AND “NO ONE” WILL GIVE PRESIDENT ELECT OBAMA A CHANCE TO GET INTO OFFICE TO GET THE ECONOMY BACK WHERE IT SHOULD BE WITH MORE JOBS, A ROOF OVER OUR HEADS AND HEALTH CARE TO ALL. BY LISTENING TO FOX NEWS AND ALL THEIR NEGATIVE CHATTER OF PRESIDENT ELECT OBAMA FAULTS, LETS TRY TO WORK TOGETHER AND GET THIS COUNTRY BACK.

Ask any military family, (servants of the American people), if their children are given the chance to move to new schools at convenient times. When you serve your country, your family makes sacrifices. This includes someone who is going to be the President of the United States. The office itself is supposed to represent the American people and service to us. I don’t recall this being an issue with other children whose father (never a mother) was President of the United States. I have to ask, where did the Obama family live when he was U.S. Senator? Wasn’t he or didn’t he live in or near Washington D.C.? What did his kids do then? The media and stuff floating around this election is worse than any election I have ever witnessed. The power and corruption is worse than the past two decades. I hope the Hopi are right and the New World comes, we have to get rid of this old one.

The last time I checked this was still America. We have traditions that must be followed. Obama is not president until January 20th. Your messiah will have to wait. Got it???

Posted by: Glenda | December 14, 2008, 9:42 am 9:42 am

if you think for one minute that the American People will ever see Obama’s original birth certificate your crazy. it will never get to court. Someone will stop that, being judges, moffia, etc..People are considering him the Messiah, the chosen one, May God in Heaven forgive us for looking into the faces of false profits. I don’t think anything that the FBI or anyone else digs up- it will never touch him. He has been prepared for this since his birth and no one will slow him down. All we can do is pray.

Posted by: brenda | December 14, 2008, 9:44 am 9:44 am

oh yes – while I am on a roll- If you also think that President Bush, alone, by himself, made all those mistakes, you are also crazy. No man alive could read all that is required to make the decisions that he had to make. He trusted his people to do that and surmize everything for him. A whole lot of lies was fed to him from trusted people and he based his decisions on their word and look how America has treated him. And all those lying people that fed him so many lies – look who hired them. If the Bush Administration is so bad, why is Obama hiring them???What is the old saying about keep your friends close but your enemies closer—–Duh!!!!

Posted by: brenda | December 14, 2008, 9:50 am 9:50 am

For those crybabies still whining about Obama’s birth certificate, that is readily available for viewing on the internet if you bother to research it. I saw the ‘official’ copy of his Hawaiian birth certificate, so just CHILL! Yes he is an American Citizen. Sheez. As for the Obama’s moving into the Blair house, the Bushie is putting them off because of some Holiday parties for his STAFF at the Blair house, which is NOT its intended usage. The usage is for the stay of foreign visitors. Since none are scheduled during that time, Bushie should have his staff parties at the White House and let Obama stay at Blair House. But we all know that the Bushies can’t think on the fly for the last 8 years, its too taxing on their little brains. Common sense is just too much for them.

Obama can’t solve economic problem, he is part of it with his ties to the liberal agenda and other liberals like Barney Frank, Waters, Meeks,Palosi and others. There push on Freddie and Fannie to make bad loans that could not be paid cost us our banking crisis, thus the global financial crisis. And their over taxation and corruption added fuel to the fire. Let us work and spend our money instead of this confiscation of the American labor with a “spread the wealth” agenda. It doesn’t work and we are seeing the fruits of it.

Posted by: Harvey Kelley Jr | December 14, 2008, 10:39 am 10:39 am

He will be the President (Elect) officially after the Electoral Collage votes. The Blair house is a motel and one needs reservations. Barry/Barack may be a citizen but he was born in Kenya. He is aware of this as is most of the world including the FBI.

Isn’t it interesting how gas is now a buck fifty a gallon AFTER Obama was elected. Hmmmm…gotta be a connection there somewhere with the price of gas, don’t you think? Speaking of gas, isn’t it interesting how the media (thank you Tom Brokaw) is now willing to mention that we have a … shhhhhh … closet smoker in the Oval Office … with the initials … BO. Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. What a drag to have to have secret service accompany you off premises, Mr. Pres, thanks to the White House smoking ban Hillary instituted, just so you can take a drag. No prob, though. Just use the Febreze that covered up who you really are during the campaign. Now, for all you 53% who will be crowning your Messiah on January 20, would you mind terribly if BO would unveil the biggest coverup and come out as the “white” person his original birth certificate says he is, so Oprah can exhale again?
Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! God, I love this country and the absurdity of our grown-up playacting, especially the way we idolize our mere mortals into God status.

Laura Bush’s spokesperson said no?
Laura Bush, the former educator?
Laura Bush, who knows the reason for the request is to start school children on time?
I can’t believe Laura Bush would do such a thing.
Now her husband, on the other hand, well, what do you expect?

Jan. 5th so that the girls could start school on schedule.
Since 1942 when the Federal Government purchased the Blair house at the suggestion of Eleanor Roosevelt the Blair House has been used as the President’s guest house for visiting dignitaries. (Eleanor had encountered and objected to seeing visiting Prime Minister Winston Churchill wandering around the White House at night in his underwear.) President Truman lived at Blair House from 1948 until 1951 with his wife Bess and daughter Margaret. The White House had been undergoing its most extensive remodeling since it was rebuilt after the British burned it in 1814. President Truman had the facility set aside for President-elect Eisenhower’s use soon after the November election. Since that time it is always reserved for the President-elect’s use starting no later than Jan. 15. President-elects Kennedy, Reagan, Bush I, and Clinton either occupied or had full use of the residence in late December or Early January. When not booked for a diginatary or president elect, the main floor reception areas have often been a convenient location for White House Staff to have functions and parties.
The initial refusal of the request by the Obama Transition Team was made by Sally McDonough a staff member of Laura Bush. It seems that the White House Staff had presumed the use of, but not officially booked, the facility for a private bash of White House Staff and invitees. The Blair House management staff also confirm that there are no other foreign dignitaries scheduled to stay at the Blair House for the duration of the Bush administration.
Yet Sally McDonough, spokeswoman to Laura Bush, insists that, regardless of the set-up, the January 15 date is non-negotiable. “Blair House is available for them on January 15th,” she says.
Looks to me like some staffers wanted to have a fancy place to throw a Texas style Beer Bash!

Tax-payer dollars provide a Blair House.

Posted by: nan spiers marsh | December 14, 2008, 4:08 pm 4:08 pm

Tax-payer dollars provide for Blair House. If the Obama family needs a place to live, the needs of the country’s new first family should trump whatever frivolity the Bushes have planned. There are plenty of rooms in the White House; the Obama family security should prevail.

Posted by: nan spiers marsh | December 14, 2008, 4:13 pm 4:13 pm

Unbelievable. As a Canadian, I don’t see the problem here at all. Education is important. Alot of Americans may not understand that. The children need to start school on time with the other classmates. The Blair house has no dignitaries scheduled, so move in there until the White House is theirs. The Bush family is gone on the 20th regardless. Democracy is alive and well. The country voted. Move on to something more important than whether the kids can start on time. This is a very petty issue that never should have even been a discussion. The Bush staff should have been more than welcoming as their citizens voted this family to be their First Family when the Bushs’ are done.

I don’t think it’s really a bif deal. I’m a conservative republican (the two are no longer interchangable) and I really hope Obama can turn thigns around. Bush had it hard. He had to face the worst attack on the U.S. I think he’s done ok for what he had to face, though many mistakes were made. As for the Blair House issue, like others have said Obama just has to wait his turn. It’s not a big deal. It’s not personal. Lots of kids transfer schools or start late, and they do great.

Posted by: Rob | December 15, 2008, 5:38 am 5:38 am

Let them stay at the Holiday Inn or Nancy Pelosi’s house. Gee, people get a life. This guy needs to wait his turn. He’s not the president yet. He’s not even the president-elect yet.

Entitlement – the theme to obama’s song.
It’s the rules, stupid. One President at the time. Sit down and wait your turn.

As a former educator, Laura Bush has forgotten that NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND means something. Shame on Laura – of all people – talk to George and give the Obama family the key to the Blair House now. How refreshing that the Obama family actually does put their children’s education first, and believes that starting in a new school on time is important.

Posted by: Kathleen | December 15, 2008, 12:43 pm 12:43 pm

With regards to obama’s birth certificate. If he was a true American he would produce the birth certificate. Why didn’t he attend his grandmothers funeral? Oh I forgot…she was a typical white woman. It makes me sick when people refer to Jackie O and michelle in the same sentence. Look what she wore on the election night and then said for the 1st time I am proud to be an American. I am not proud to have this family representing Americans as the 1st family. Is it true that michelle’s mother is also moving to the white house? The change obama talked about is upon us. You elected him…so here comes the change.

WOW! A mountain has been made out of a mole hill on this issue. Yes, Obama asked if it would be OK to move into the Blair House before the 15th to start his girls in school for the beginning of the 2nd semester of school. This is not an outrageous request, in fact, it is perfectly reasonable. Reagan, and Clinton both took residency at Blair House before the 15th. But the Bush family says its not available, and Obama has publicly stated that its no big deal, that Bush has been very cooperative in the transition, they will get a hotel. While I think it reflects poorly on Bush, Obama has been very understanding about the timing of his move and the unavailability of the Blair House. If staying in a hotel is OK with Obama, then the rest of his supporters should support him in that decision (follow his lead). His daughters will start school on time, and only a little inconvenience will occur. Its time to move on and get past the partisan bickering. No one is traumatically damaged in this situation, so we need to move on and let history be the judge of these events.
