“No Comment” on Blago — for How Long?

Our GMA report on the latest developments in Blagoje-gate.

Said Democratic lawyer — and former Clinton White House aide — Lanny Davis, of President-elect Obama: "It’s in his interest to be completely transparent here."

He will continue to have no comment as long as people are naive enough to beleive that if you swim in pool of slim you can come out slim free. Anyone who beleives that Obama didnt mention to the good gov who he would like to see replace him is very naive.

“Anyone who beleives that Obama didnt mention to the good gov who he would like to see replace him” [sic]
What’s wrong with Obama having an opinion … ?

Posted by: Blogger | December 11, 2008, 8:50 am 8:50 am

rachel…I am not sure what pool of “slim” you are referring to. I do know that Obama has had very little to do with Blago for quite some time now. He was the only Democratic governor that was NOT invited to speak at the convention. He never campaigned with Obama and does not even come from the same faction of the democratic party. And if Obama’s team made a suggestion as to his successor in the senate, so what?

Never seen a “pool of slim.” Slime, yes, but not slim.

Rachel, where can I find a poll of “slim”? I’ve been meaning to take off a few pounds. Do you think swimming in it will help? Please. Please.

isn’t aiding and abetting a criminal a crime? so are the American people and journalists now criminals too? I can’t believe people voted for him when they saw his ‘environment’ but to let him stay in an international embarrassment. if 71% of the last 7 governors have been arrested, that’s where Obama came from, remove him

Posted by: richardm | December 11, 2008, 9:11 am 9:11 am

Mr. LePetomane, I think you hit the nail on the head.

Posted by: Ken | December 11, 2008, 9:16 am 9:16 am

Who is “the other guy” who will raise him a millions dollars? Is that Obama?
Beyond that, I’d say that sits not really fair to start with the pictures of the blacks SUVs, suggesting that PEBHO is embattled.

Posted by: BertieW | December 11, 2008, 9:19 am 9:19 am

Jake,
at the end of your report, you ask “how long can he [Obama] not comment?” or words to that effect. Obama has already A) said that he has had no contact with Blago or his office, and B) called upon Blago to resign? What else do you want him to say?

Posted by: William J. LePetomane | December 11, 2008, 9:22 am 9:22 am

Richardm, I agree with you. We should never elect anyone who comes from an “environment” where people are corrupt. In fact, since there are corrupt people in Illinois, there should be no elected officials in Illinois because, of course, everybody who runs for office in Illinois is corrupt.
Therefore, all of the politicians in Illinois should be fired and put in jail. Even the ones that are not accused of or suspected of anything. We know they’re guilty because there are guilty people in government so *everybody* in government must be guilty.
Let Bush appoint everybody in Illinois, including all of the state and federal officials.
And don’t stop there; people who come from any place where the governor or mayor is corrupt should not be allowed to run for office because, if they’re from that place, they must be corrupt, too. We don’t need proof just proximity.
Sarah Palin should be impeached. Her senator was just convicted of corruption, the congressman is under investigation and she replaced a corrupt governor so she must be corrupt–beyond Troopergate.

Since Fitzgerald moved quickly to act before Blago could put his plans in action based only on taped conversations of what he could do there is a need to let Fitz collect more information before the press. I think it is prudent to allow Fitz to collect all of the information he can before it is contaminated by the press in public. Since Jake was on the campaign trail he knows that Blago was not a surrogate or at any of the campaign functions. Blago was not invited to speak at the convention or at the victory party in the park in Chicago. After reading the contempt and foul language used by Blago describing the reaction of only getting appreciation is enough for me to decide that Obama is not involved.

Posted by: Michael | December 11, 2008, 9:32 am 9:32 am

The tone of innuendo from “journalists” like Tapper is really uncalled for. The prosecutor, who has access to all the facts and tapes, has gone out of his way to definitively say Obama was not involved or aware in any way. That’s an unusually strong exculpatory statement from a prosecutor. So why do journalists, who don’t have access to all the info the prosecutor has, think they know more about this?

Posted by: Lisa | December 11, 2008, 9:33 am 9:33 am

It doesn’t matter what color you are; it matters what values you hold and practice. How much do we have to sacrifice to have a person of colour as President?
isn’t aiding and abetting a criminal a crime? so are the American people and journalists now criminals too? I can’t believe people voted for him when they saw his ‘environment’ but to let him stay is an international embarrassment. if 71% (5 of the last 7) of Chicago governors have been arrested, that’s where Obama came from, remove him

Posted by: richardm | December 11, 2008, 9:34 am 9:34 am

I am from IL. Believe me, Blago has been a pariah in his own party for the last 4 years. He fights with Mike Madigan, the Dem. Speaker of the House. Mayor Daley called Blago “cuckoo.” Obama denied Blago the opportunity to speak at the convention or appear at any campaign events. On Democrat Day at our state fair, Blago was snubbed–no other Dem. elected officials showed up. His approval rating in this state, even before all this news broke, was 13%. They have been talking of impeachment even before this news broke. Lisa Madigan, Atty. Genl., was openly talking of opposing Blago for the primary next time. Blago is an arrogant, narcicisst and people in Illinois are long sick of him.

richardm you sound like a broken record. Please go away.

Posted by: Ken | December 11, 2008, 9:37 am 9:37 am

With all due respect, Lanny Davis’ recommendations for Obama need to be taken with a huge grain of salt. And “Hillary Clinton campaign dead-ender” and “Fox news consultant” should be added to counter-balance his other titles.

How nice it must be to selectively forget whatever it is that bothers the minions. Barry uh can’t seem to uh rememba uh last month uh if he did or uh if he didn’t uh talk to the Gov. It also shows us that uh the fools who voted for “change” uhhhh got short “changed” with uhhhhh….all the re uh nigging that has been done in the uh last month. But like good uh little uh zombies…..uhhhhh….circle the wagons and C.Y.A uhhhh ya’ll. Our “transparent” prez elect is taking any questions about Blago off his change.gov page — you know, the one where he touts transparency. He’s asking for questions from people, but is scrubbing any that relate to our beloved governor-salesman. (I’m from Illinois.)

Posted by: beth | December 11, 2008, 10:22 am 10:22 am

There has GOT to be some sort of evidence of a conversation between Blagojevich’s people and Obama’s. Think logically, and look at the timeline of events. There’s a conversation on, I believe it’s Nov. 10 — a long one, talking about what Blago can get, with Washington people. That very night — imagine! — that very night, CNN reports that Obama’s hand-picked successor and good friend and fund-raiser, Valerie Jarrett, is taking herself out of the runnning.
Logic dictates that Obama’s people got a sense of what B. wanted, and backed off.
And by the way, why is no one annoyed that Obama was running around touting someone with little credentials to be his successor? Talk about rewarding someone with a plum job, for getting him elected. And hey, Obama? Maybe we the people of Illinois would like a say.

Posted by: beth | December 11, 2008, 10:26 am 10:26 am

Didn’t ABC have a large part in Obama’s win? Amazing how the liberal media jumped on his bandwagon and now tries to distance themselves from him.
Rush is right.

Posted by: eric | December 11, 2008, 10:27 am 10:27 am

Perhaps the president-elect is not taking anymore questions on this matter because; a) it is an ongoing criminal investigation. and b) it has very little to do with him, or his present task of working on the transition.

Posted by: Ken | December 11, 2008, 10:29 am 10:29 am

Beth, I say let Pat Quinn become Gov. and appoint someone. Pat is a straight-shooter and, seemingly, honest. I too am from IL and do not want to spend millions on a special election. We need two senators, now.

Posted by: William J. LePetomane | December 11, 2008, 10:30 am 10:30 am

you kidding me? Lanny Davis was your democrat? the guy who refused to endorse him and went to work on fox news? who issued an ultimatum to obama about who HAD to be his vp? look there’s worse out there than what you do. But.

Posted by: lupercal | December 11, 2008, 10:36 am 10:36 am

Okay sue me I said slim instead of slime. The point is Obama said he had no discussions with the Gov. about who should replace him. That’s probably not true and Obama supporters can beleive that if they want to. Nothing is wrong with making suggestions about who he wanted to replace him, but then why lie about it? Obama supporters have decided that they don’t care if he lied about making suggestions to the Gov. for his replacements. Just like back in the 90′s i decided I didn’t care if Bill C. lied about having sex with that woman, but I knew it was lie just the same. People know Obama is lying about not knowing anything. I am not necessarily saying he offered up anything to get his appointment but he knew what was going on.

Rachel, Obama said HE did not have a conversation with Blago. This does not mean that one of his team did not have a conversation with Blago or his COS Harris.

jpt writes:

Uh … right. Lanny Davis. David Gergen. Blablabla.
Is there a single soul left watching who DOESn’t think Obama’s as dirty as Blagojevich, OR that there’s likely to be any resolution to this dirt dustup other than that Jesse Jackson Jr. — or ANYbody named “Jesse Jackson”, EVER –will NOT become a Senator?
If Jesse hadn’t gone against his politics to endorse The CHANGEling in the first place — it was John Edwards, of course, who came closest to Jesse Jackson’s politics — Obama might not have been able to buy the Democratic nomination, even WITH $750 million dollars.
We’ve been had, boys and girls. And now we get a big dose of online outreach from … God help us, Tom Daschle.

Posted by: Belle Starr | December 11, 2008, 10:42 am 10:42 am

Well, Beth if you want a say in who replaces a sitting senator mid-term, perhaps you should change your constitution since the IL constitution says the governor has the sole authority to appoint a replacement.
Get that? You don’t have a voice in a replacement; you’ve never had a voice in a replacement.

Posted by: Carolinagirl | December 11, 2008, 10:45 am 10:45 am

rachel…Your problem is that you are stating that Obama “lied”. Yet you have no FACTS whatsoever to back up that claim.

Posted by: Ken | December 11, 2008, 10:48 am 10:48 am

Jake,
Couldn’t you come up with a little better source than Lanny Davis? Even amongst us Dem’s, he is a caricature of an “inside” democratic source.

Belle Star: you were a McCain supporter, right?

Posted by: William J. LePetomane | December 11, 2008, 10:53 am 10:53 am

Ken,
Google “Obama and Blagojevich at the National Governors Association”
There is a picture of the two of them shaking hands in front of cameras. On December 2nd.
The news story about it says “Blagojevich says he wants to use the meeting with Obama to discuss how the federal government can help address state budget shortfalls. ”
On November 5th the Governors office press release said”
“Governor Blagojevich Congratulates President-elect Obama and Discusses U.S. Senate Seat
To fill President-Elect Barack Obama’s Senate seat, Governor will use deliberate process to select suitable replacement
CHICAGO – After congratulating President-Elect Barack Obama on his decisive victory, Governor Rod R. Blagojevich announced today that he will take his time and use a diverse senior staff made up of key members of his administration who will assist him in selecting a suitable replacement for Obama.”
Its kind of clear that Obama at least ‘misspoke’.

Posted by: BertieW | December 11, 2008, 11:05 am 11:05 am

The LAST time Barky announced he’s naming Daschle to HHS, the stock market plunged. Watch it crash for good after The One’s next remarks.
Obama should just … resign.

Posted by: Belle Starr | December 11, 2008, 11:05 am 11:05 am

Bertie: Oh My God! You mean Obama shook hands with the Gov. of his own state? Impeach him now! Before he even gets innaugurated. Get real.

Posted by: William J. LePetomane | December 11, 2008, 11:07 am 11:07 am

The One is reading his remarks, and not looking into cameras. Lots of jaw-gesturing. Prissy prevarication and flim-flam, as usual, leaning on the weasel word “appropriate”.
If Barky doesn’t declare National Health the moment he’s sworn in — if he is — a General Strike is in order.

Posted by: Belle Starr | December 11, 2008, 11:10 am 11:10 am

Belle: go ahead and get started on your strike. We’ll all be right behind you. LOL

Posted by: William J. LePetomane | December 11, 2008, 11:16 am 11:16 am

The appointment of Daschle — he’s going to make “American companies more competitive” — is an abomination, an absolute affront.
“Change”?? Oh bwah ha ha.
The stock market will crash for good. Just wait.
Meanwhile, anybody who fools with Obama’s websites is really asking for it.

Posted by: Belle Starr | December 11, 2008, 11:18 am 11:18 am

William,
Do you concede the difference between ‘no contact” and shaking hands?
And when did I say that he should be impeached? Can we at least ask questions about his obvious inconsistency?

Posted by: BertieW | December 11, 2008, 11:20 am 11:20 am

Bertie: He is saying right now, live, on his press conference that he had no contact with the Gov. “…ABOUT THESE ISSUES” i.e the Senate seat.

Posted by: William J. LePetomane | December 11, 2008, 11:22 am 11:22 am

There he goes again: Barky claiming he “ran” for the Illinois state senate. Obama didn’t RUN, he ran off all the other candidates, Chicago style. Then Axelrod ran off Obama’s US Senate opponent with a timely sex scandal.
Then the “Obama” machine bought the Democratic nomination, which thanks to Obama lookalike George Bush, carried the White House with it, this year.

Posted by: Belle Starr | December 11, 2008, 11:22 am 11:22 am

Stuttering again: a lot of blabla about premiums.
God forbid this liar should “bankrupt” anything, huh? He voted for the bailout that’s bankrupted the country into longer than the future’s likely to last, and he’s worried about INSURANCE premiums?
Now Obama says he promised “process”. That’s not “change”. What people want is National Health, something like HR 676.
Obama’s a fraud.

Posted by: Belle Starr | December 11, 2008, 11:31 am 11:31 am

Ok even if you bite that Obama had no discussions with the Gov about any appointments his transition team probably did. So you mean his transistion team mentioned nothing to him about any discussions they may have had with the gov? Obama not only said he had no discussions with the gov but that he didnt know anything like this was going on. I choose to beleive that Obama is not that naive about his city’s politics.

Posted by: rachel | December 11, 2008, 11:35 am 11:35 am

“So you mean his transistion team mentioned nothing to him about any discussions they may have had with the gov?”
The CHANGEling’s job is to look pretty, and to stick out his jaw once in awhile and say “appropriate” on teevee — not to worry his pretty little head about dirty ole politics.
At $750 million for the nomination, “Obama” sure seems like a complete crock of over-priced jive.

Posted by: Belle Starr | December 11, 2008, 11:43 am 11:43 am

Tapper gets action! Calls for Obama to talk and he does.
Obama is shocked, shocked to find out this sort of thing was going on. Never mind that it is par for the course.
The good part is “He said he had asked his staff to gather the facts of any contacts with the governor’s office about the vacancy.”
I am going to assume that those facts will show up “t word” on the web as they are known rather than having someone sanitized them.

Posted by: BertieW | December 11, 2008, 11:43 am 11:43 am

On November 5th the Governors office press release said”
“Governor Blagojevich Congratulates President-elect Obama and Discusses U.S. Senate Seat
Read it again. It does not state WHOM the governor spoke with about the senate seat.

Posted by: Ken | December 11, 2008, 11:53 am 11:53 am

When has Obama ever been transparent?
The fawning MSM has never required him to be.
When will accountability begin?

Posted by: Michelle | December 11, 2008, 12:05 pm 12:05 pm

I posted that because it says Blago called and congratulated Obama.
That is contact.
I guess the new maginot line is that the he had “no contact about the issue”.
But all the people who were trying to defend “no contact” have to concede defeat.
Still if you read the complaint things look awfully funny. On Nov 10th Blago and his wife and advisers have a conference call where they discuss O putting his wife on boards and “monetizing ” his relationship. So they are going off to his up PEBHO. That very night there is a CNN report that VJ has been withdrawn and will be staying with the transition team.
It definitely looks like there was contact.

Posted by: BertieW | December 11, 2008, 12:19 pm 12:19 pm

So Obama shook hands with 41 governors. Big deal.

Posted by: Ken | December 11, 2008, 12:25 pm 12:25 pm

He shook hands with the guy that he was responsible for getting elected as Governor. Obama and Emanuel were co strategists on Blago’s 2002 campaign. They knew him- get over it.
There are all kinds of documents that say Blagojevich intended to talk with Obama about the seat. The news report on the Governors conference says that he is planning to have a conversation with PEBHO about the economic situation in Ill. Unless Obama ran away from him these two had some conversations, and Hot Rod was interested in the topic of the senate seat.
I notice today Obama said the tapes show that his office was “not perceived by the governor’s office as being amenable” to the crime. Actually no. Blagojevich and his advidors assumed that Obama would at least entertain at least three possible payoffs- an HHS post for Blago, setting up a 501c foundation for him to run, a cozy payoff through Change to Win.
Maybe its just Blago’s twisted psyche. Or maybe the blackmailer knows his mark.

Bertie you are making a mountain out of a mole hill. Blago is a crook to be sure, but that does not make the entire state of Illinois’ population a crook. It has been made considerably clear that Obama has had very little to do with Blago for some time. This country has much bigger things to worry about than who shook who’s hand.

Tuning in late here, but to Lanny Davis: Forgive me for stating the bloody obvious, but whether it’s in his interest to be completely transparent depends on what the truth is.

Posted by: Judasmac | December 11, 2008, 7:20 pm 7:20 pm

Mildred: If your talking about Obama you are so right. He stutters too much. Its only when he practiced a speech for a few hours that he doesn’t stutter. Obama is no saint know the crooks he knew earlier. Farrakhan, Wright, Ayers, Father P and Rezko whom he turned his back on after Rezko paid for l/2 of his home. That’s the way Obama is. If his pals are in trouble, he runs. I believe he did talk to the Gov. and so did Emanuel exactly five or six times. And Obama didn’t use his brains when he picked Jarrett, Richardson and Emanuel for his administration. Obama chose people from Clinton’s administration because he knew he needed their help to run this country. He certainly don’t qualify.
