Obama Calls for Blagojevich to Resign

In response to questions from the AP, Obama Transition Team aide and incoming White House press secretary Robert Gibbs today said that the President-elect believes Gov. Rod Blagojevich should resign, and that the Illinois legislature should consider holding a special election for Mr. Obama’s replacement in the Senate.

Questions and answers below:

1. Does the President-elect believe the governor should resign?

Yes. The President-elect agrees with Lt. Governor Quinn and many others that under the current circumstances it is difficult for the Governor to effectively do his job and serve the people of Illinois.

2. Should there be a special election?

The President-elect believes that the general assembly should consider the issue and put in place a process to select a new senator that will have the trust and confidence of the people of Illinois.

He can call for his resignation, but thats not going to shut him up, lots of people are going down when this investigation is finished.. what we have to fear is Silence and biased reporting by the Obama loving Media..Team Obama is in damage control now

If Blagojevich resigns, the new Governor should appoint the Senator. Everybody will be watching, so it would be difficult to do something shady with the appointment.
A special election will cost the people of the State of Illinois a lot of money, and would be subject to the same injection of special interest money on behalf of the candidates.

what did OBAMA know and when did he know it?

Unless he is found guilty of any wrongdoing (not “guilty” by association with Blagojevich), I hope that the diehard republicans are smart enough to not distract President-elect Obama and his team from the important issue that needs his full attention – the economy!

It is interesting the Blagojevich wanted his wife appointed to corporate boards (to make money). Isn’t that what Michelle Obama did?

Neo-cons, Just what is Obama supposed to be guilty of?
Other than living in Illinois.

Obama is just cleaning house before he takes office. Do a search of how many parisoners from Trinity United Church of Christ have died in the past year. But he’s still no Clinton, they KNOW how to get these things DONE! Maybe THAT why she is in the cabinet, ya think!?!

The allegations are incredible. He has to resign now, before the trial, for the simple fact that he cannot effectively serve the people of Illinois. No appointment he makes will have credibility and he doesn’t have the trust of Illinoisians anymore.

Posted by: anonymous | December 10, 2008, 1:08 pm 1:08 pm

It’s so nice to know that innocent until proven guilty has no meaning anymore. What exactly do you think Obama is guilty of? Knowing this man? Of course he knows him, he’s the governor of his state. I’m sure if the whole guilt by association thing were true, most people would be guilty of something.

Its obvious some blood-thirsty lions are hoping for an opportunity to hang the Blagojevich problem squarely on Obama’s neck and then eat him up.Not this time. Not ever.

He should resign or be impeached.
To be fair, the governor has not
enriched himself illegally from
this matter or any other before
it. There is no proof of that.
There is no legal case against
him. But he should be kicked out
of office without further delay.

Is anyone else beginning to think that this whole story, which really just amounts to standard business-as-usual stuff in Chicago, is all designed to keep our attention focused away from some other news story? I’m beginning to feel like we’re all looking one way when we should be looking the other way.

If you are against Obama, you will use anything possible to smear him. It doesn’t mean something is there or that the media is covering something up. If he did know something, that doesn’t mean he was actually in on it. I’ll wait for more info before making assumptions, myself.

ScorpRedhead : The opposite is at least equally true as well. If you support Obama you’ll ignore anything that doesn’t paint him as “the one.” Obama is neck deep in corruption, and we all know it. You don’t have somebody give you a $300,000 kickback ( like Rezko gave the Obamas ) without having done something in return.

Obama and Blagoyovitch were NEVER close.
The Gov. has been under investigation for 5 years. I am from Chicago and have followed this closely. The Govenor did not even attend the Democratic convention…he DOES NOT LIKE Obama, because Obama would never take his bait…his hands are clean. Our last Govenor George Ryan is currently in jail for corruption and he was Republican. There is lots of corruption in BOTH parties. That being said…Illinois is still a terrifically run state.

Posted by: Susan | December 10, 2008, 1:44 pm 1:44 pm

So, Obama haters – Sorry your “fake birth certificate” ploy didn’t bring him down, nor did anything else you tried to pin on him. Do you honestly think that if the federal government or any other federal agency had something on him, it wouldn’t be revealed? Come on now, even Bush’s crimes have been made public and he hasn’t been indicted or impeached. Certainly, being responsible for the murder of nearly 4,200 American soldiers by lying to get us into War should have gotten Bush removed from office, but it didn’t. Obama has no part in this scandal of buying his Senate seat, and for you to hope and wish he is involved won’t make it happen. But keep hoping, it’s all you got!

Good for Obama. He’s got to get as far away from this as he can. He’s got to do something about Axelrod, though. He can’t have it look like there’s someone willing to lie for him. Obama’s got to be above reproach. Since Axelrod can be linked to Blagojevich’s campaigns, a falsehood from him covered up as a “mistake” is a liability Mr. Obama cannot afford.

Questions for all you Obama haters out there: If Obama was at all involved in this, why would he risk pissing off Blago any further by calling upon him to resign? If Blago has the “goods” on Obama, is more likely or less likely to sing to the Feds if Obama wants him to resign?

The Feds bugged Blago’s home and office. They tapped his phones. They have been recording him since sometime in Oct.; before the election. So they have been recording him ever since he has been in position to name a Senator. As a result of all that recording, and all the discussions on selling the Senate seat, Fitzgerald made a definitive statement the other day: Obama is not a subject of this investigation. Period.

How comical for freeloading Republicans to try to smear President-elect Obama (say that again with me, conservatives, P-R-E-S-I-D-E-N-T), since if you read anything about what’s going on (which I know you can’t…..) you’d know that this whole episode does nothing but prove how upstanding our new President is. He was offered the chance to play along, and HE DIDN’T. I predict President-elect Obama will be one of the greatest leaders our country has ever known, in part because of the contrast with the fool in office now…..

I love when the Dems talk about everything but the issue at hand (this is what I find VERY typical for them; when you ask them a question and they can not answer, instead of saying the way it is, they start talking about something else). Now they are talking about Bush’s war in Iraq (never mind that even Hilary supported it – btw, I am not saying that Bush is without sins). So, typically, they talk about everything else except this low life, stupid, moron, greedy jackass Blagojevich who can not even figure out that one does not talk like that on the phone – elementary, my dear Watson, elementary.

To the many Obama defenders on this site: Obama may or may not have been involved in this scheme – likely, we’ll never really know as the feds stepped in and made the arrest b4 the governor actually made the deal. You’d think they’d have waited and arrested him after he made the deal as that would have been a much bigger crime, but they didn’t. I don’t think anyone on here is actually accusing Obama of conspiring with the governor …. but you can not deny one very important fact – Obama thrived in the dirty world of Chicago politics. That atmosphere made him who he is as politician. He not only knows the ins and outs of the state’s political system, he learned quickly how to make it work for him. He may not have been involved in any scheme to sell his former senate seat, but certainly, he knew that this-for-that styled politics was a way of life in Illinois.

P.S. I guess you guys missed the part about the subpoenas being issued yesterday regarding OBAMA & REZKO.
Rezko is up to his eyeballs in dealings with Blago. And OBAMA is involved with REZKO.
Get it??? LOL.
Whoooo hoooooo!

The really sad thing is this moron Governor has given Limbaugh, Hannity and the Limbaugh Lemmings another Neo-Con conspiracy theory to drool over throughout Obama’s first term in office. It’s just another tool for them to use in their quest to make a living by dividing the country with rhetoric.

Posted by: dan | December 10, 2008, 2:38 pm 2:38 pm

Why should “vitch” resign? He is STILL governor and can do as he damn well wishes. Its not like he is like you and I; he is above us. Once in that position, I’m sure he could appoint himself to replace God, if he wanted too. I don’t think God pays enough for the evich to want the job. Surely when he spends a couple of hours in jail, he will get out and be paid handsomely on the lecture circuit. Somebody will pay him big to get the scoop on his important self. Doesn’t it make you proud to be an American? Kinda makes me want to go to a National Cemetery and apologize to the Veterans that gave their all, so THIS could be some of the worthless fruit of their labors. OMG

Posted by: Roy M Savary | December 10, 2008, 2:38 pm 2:38 pm

Can’t help but laugh at this point at the ignorance of the American people.
To suggest that he had no involvment, or more ludicrously, no knowledge of, this Blago ordeal is sheer ignorance.
To think, imagine, suggest that Obama is honest and not corrupt, when anyone with any common sense knows that NOONE gets to the position he is in without being engulfed in the corruption that infilitrates every aspect of politics.
I predicted that he would be the biggest diaster of a president that we ever had, and he is shooting out of the block in that direction.

Posted by: Andy | December 10, 2008, 2:39 pm 2:39 pm

For 8 years we had to hear the LEFT try to link every single republican who was arrested, indicted or even under investigation with Bush…..
NOW it’s payback. The governor is in Obama’s own backyard for heaven’s sake. It’s the big circle of CORRUPTION.
Tee Hee. This is getting fun.

Posted by: Jo | December 10, 2008, 2:39 pm 2:39 pm

I don’t know anything about this governor, I could care less whether he’s guilty or innocent and quite frankly, don’t care what happens to him since I don’t live in Illinois. But what does it say about our new President to be, when he’s already calling for the governor’s head without allowing the judicial system to take it’s course? If the gov’s ability to fairly appoint the new senator is compromised because of these charges, can’t the courts appoint the lt. governor to make that decision? I understand that Obama has a lot of influence, but he shouldn’t change the Illinois constitution because of this. There is a system in place, a judicial system, let it play out. How can the next President Elect not practice, “innocent until proven guilty”? Obama should not jump to any conclusions. He isn’t (or shouldn’t) be affected by this and he needs to stay out of it.

Wow, Jo. So YOU must be on the inside, huh? YOU have insight that Fitzgerald does not have, right? YOU know what the FBI has not discovered yet? YOU have to come forward. Tell all. Nothing came out of the Rezko investigation except him going to jail. Maybe YOU can help clear that up too and give your evidence to the Feds!

I’m sitting here and one question keeps coming to mind. Why was Blago so sure Obama would go for this? And the only answer I see is that they’ve done this before. We know they’re both corrupt and we know they’ve worked together often.. is it such a huge leap to see that they’ve pulled shady deals like this before?

Posted by: kuassa | December 10, 2008, 2:43 pm 2:43 pm

Al: I DO live in Illinois where Blago’s approval rating, even before all this broke, was at 12%. He is a pariah in his own party. Completely ineffective, even before his arrest. People here have had enough. We want him out. He cannot effectively govern.

Posted by: Goddard W. Bolt | December 10, 2008, 2:43 pm 2:43 pm

I think some people are really lacking in simple common sense. If the governor of IL was soliciting bribes and he complains on tape about Obama not being willing to bribe him, explain to me exactly how that makes Obama corrupt? A simple explanation will do.
Look we get that you don’t like the man, but don’t make an idiot of yourself by calling Obama corrupt when he wasn’t willing to give the governor anything but a thank you for choosing a replacement he approved up.
Unless thanks yous are worth money now?

Posted by: Herb Gray | December 10, 2008, 2:46 pm 2:46 pm

Let me explain this to you one more time.
Blago ASSUMED Obama would help him out because they’ve all GREASED EACH OTHER’S PALMS before.
You’re also not seeing how the hospital Michelle was working for was NAMED in the charges yesterday.
Pay for play. It’s the Obama/Chicago way.

Posted by: Jo | December 10, 2008, 2:46 pm 2:46 pm

If Blagojevich resigns, then some one must become governor, probably the lt governor. If that person is not fit to fill Obama’s seat, then it stands to reason that there should be a special election to fill the governor office as well as the Senate seat. If Blagojevich does not resign, then the legislature has to impeach him.

Posted by: GreggW | December 10, 2008, 2:46 pm 2:46 pm

Herb,
One govenor doesn’t mean the state is run by that party.
Everyone knows Massachusetts is run by democrats. Same with Lousiana.
The corrupt states/counties/cities are run by democrats.
We all know that.
Nice try though.

Posted by: Jo | December 10, 2008, 2:47 pm 2:47 pm

Concerned about the facts : Why do we think Obama is corrupt? Here’s an example for you..
Obama helped direct $15,000,000 of taxpayer money into a project run by Tony Rezko. Rezko then makes a deal with a real estate agency to lower the price on Obama’s home purchase by $300,000. 1 + 1 = ????

Posted by: howwouldiknow | December 10, 2008, 2:48 pm 2:48 pm

Concerned about the facts: you might be correct looking at the obvious and immediate facts based on some statement of Blago. Fortunately, or unfortunately, things go deeper than that. The fact is that he wanted bribe from Obama speaks for itself. How could he even assume that he would get it? Get it? You need to look at the implications, that is what good investigators do.

Well, first of all, what evidence do you have that Blago was “sure” about anything. We seem to have more evidence that he was stupid than anything else.
Secondly, the Governor was obviously WRONG, because Obama did not “go for it.”
Therefore, you conclude that Obama must be corrupt. Because……well, you really hate him and want to find something, anything, to pin on him. Good logic!

He should be put on “paid leave” and not allow access until the case is cleared, with with imprisonment or allowed to go free. His bank accounts should be kept under proper surveillance and he should also be monitored. We cannot and should allow him to leave a trail of damage and destruction in his wake. I’ve known a bank robber and killer. Doesn’t make me one. I suppose I think this because I’ve had some people surprise me in my life time.

Posted by: Susan-1 | December 10, 2008, 3:05 pm 3:05 pm

jock59801 : Once again simple logic eludes you. You don’t get as upset as Blago did when you cold call somebody and they refuse a business proposition. In fact, you don’t even try something that big unless you’ve got some history with them. You do get pissed like that when somebody owes you and they blow you off.
We know Obama has a history of corrupt dealings, and we know those dealings involve Chicago politics. It’s unlikely he managed that without a good deal of interaction with Blagojevich.
I realize that you think Obama is the messiah and can do no wrong, but that clearly isn’t the case.

Blago is going to have such serious charges against him after all this is over that he will SING LIKE A CANARY to get a sweet deal.
Chicago dems are going down and that includes Obama.
Sweeeeet.

Posted by: Jo | December 10, 2008, 3:12 pm 3:12 pm

Blago claimed he had demanded the Tribune fire editorial writers in exchange for supporting state funding for the sale of Wrigley Field. Blago says that Tribune was agreeable.
Funny thing. No one at the Tribune ever talked to Blago, no one on the editorial page was asked to change their writing and although the Trib laid of writers, not a single editorial writer got the axe.
What does this mean? Blago = Walter Mitty. He’s delusional and making up stuff to brag about. Prosecutors taped him for two months and they don’t have a single conversation of him actually extorting anybody–just talking about extorting them.

Posted by: Carolinagirl | December 10, 2008, 3:12 pm 3:12 pm

Let me recap what might have happened:
1. Blago wanted favor from Obama for himself and his wife for appointing a Senator
2. Obama and team declined
3. Then he got mad and eventually caught on tape
To me there is a very serious implication here. Blago expected the favor, otherwise he would not have requested it. This is the modus operandi of the corrupt leftist political elite in Chicago. Now Blago is mad, who knows what may happen and how much he will sing?

Posted by: kuassa | December 10, 2008, 3:12 pm 3:12 pm

Goddard,
If Blago hates Obama and Obama hates him, WHY would Blago ASSUME Obama would do this favor for him?
Because he knows Obama has done stuff like this before.
You people are hilarious with all your spin. Obama’s name will be ruined by this time all this is over.
At the very least he won’t be able to push his liberal agenda.
Whooo hooo.

It’s fun watching the media talk about this 24/7 when they (up till now) had been trying to make Obama another Lincoln.
The media must be miserable. : )
Love it.

Isn’t it sad when you have to correct right wingers on details of their own conspiracy theories.
But that’s what happens when right wingers act like parrots instead of thinking for themselves.

Posted by: ANGIE | December 10, 2008, 3:23 pm 3:23 pm

Oh, be still my beating heart! Finally an assertive and forceful Obama. By all means let’s fire Blagojevich, let’s tar and feather him and run him out of town! Usually , Obama wants to wait and have a debate before tackling a big problem. What’s different about this? Could there be more to reveal that will involve Obama? Obama has known this man since 2002; I am sure that Blagojevich did not just undergo a personality change. I am beginning to think that there is something in the water, after all, Obama thought that he should be President after only having given one keynote speech. With huge egos and ambitions, and a little greasing and tweaking of the wheel, maybe Blagojevich could have become President in 2012.It is interesting to image what would have turned up if the feds had listened in on Obama before the elections.

Let’s see, what else can the right-wingers blame Obama for? I know! How about this: he was the second gunman at the grassy knoll at the Kennedy assassination! Oh, that’s right. He would have been an infant. How about Hurricane Katrina? Where was he when THAT went down, huh???????

Posted by: Goddard W. Bolt | December 10, 2008, 3:25 pm 3:25 pm

Jo,
please stick to the facts of the case at hand.
Obama, like most other politicians distanced themsselved from Blogo. Obama refused a request from Blogo to speak at the DNC on his behalf!
The US Attorney CLEARLY stated Obama is not implicated in ANY way with this case!!!

Posted by: Richard | December 10, 2008, 3:26 pm 3:26 pm

Carolinagirl : Right. I mean it’s obviously just a coincidence that Obama got a huge discount on property, at the peak of the housing boom. on the same day that Rezko just happened to purchase something from the same seller. Just like it was a coincidence that a few months later Obama just happened to push 15 million into a project run by Rezko.

According to the Gov. Obama clearly told him that all he would get from Obama would be “appreciation,” not anything else. Obama is in the clear, especially since he immediately reported the shameful abuse of power and corruption by a fellow Democrat to the FBI. Oh wait a minute…he didn’t report it! He protected that scumbag! Great judgement Obama!

Posted by: Goddard W. Bolt | December 10, 2008, 3:30 pm 3:30 pm

Did anyone notice Fitzgerald said Obama is not part of this “complaint”. I did not hear him say he was not part of the investigatation. More “complaints” will be comming. We will have to see if they include Obama or members of his inner circle. We do know this about Fitzgerald, even when he knew who leaked Plame to the press, he still went after Libby for a process crime. Will that happen to Axelrod or Emanuel?

Posted by: rodidog | December 10, 2008, 3:30 pm 3:30 pm

I can tell one thing: Bush is and was not my favorite person and president but he had only a miniscule fraction of the scandals and America-hating relationships what Obama had so far. To me, the man’s past is potentially the gauge of his performance in the future. I see dark clouds.

Hi Angie. Obama was approached by the crooked Gov. back in November. After the arrest this week, team Obama may have ratted him in. Why did they wait when they knew? I voted for Obama, but Team Obama blew this one. Like the other bloger said, just stop supporting these crooks, and lets clean up our party! And start by getting rid of Jesse Jackson and his crooked son!

Concerned in OH: “Easy. While PEBHO and Blago were haggling back and forth on the price for his seat, Blago wouldn’t accept PEBHO’s bribe.”
Yes, that could be true. Or it could not be true. You don’t know any more than I do. We are both assuming based on our perceptions of the person. Except I have the advantage of that little “innocent until proven guilty” thing.

Posted by: jock59801 | December 10, 2008, 3:49 pm 3:49 pm

Concerned in OH: I love your post, I repeat it below (thanks for the sense of humor).
I imagine the conversation between PEBHO and Blago on 11/10 went something like this:
Blago: What graft will you give me if I put Jarrett in your seat?
PEBHO: Hope?
Blago: Nope.
PEBHO: Change?
Blago: Change for my pocket?
PEBHO: Ok.
Blago: $1M.
PEBHO: Ouch, I haven’t signed my next book deal, how about $500k?
Blago: Nope.
And then in comes Rahm to pull the rug out from under Blago.
Fitzgerald has this all on tape too. Which is great. I wonder if he coordinated it with the Secret Service?

Posted by: kuassa | December 10, 2008, 3:50 pm 3:50 pm

As of this morning, IL Sen. President Jones and the minority leader have met and decided to call a special session of the Illinois legislature to set up an alternate method of choosing a new Senator, and to strip the powers of appointment from the governor…and everyone of note has called on Blago to resign.
He wasn’t and is not a part of the Machine. If he were, he would have known who to select, and he would have already known what, if any, consideration he would receive. The Machine is very well-oiled and very disciplined…Blago is not even at the party, much less invited to dance!

I am sure that Obama’s Team would not make a deal with him. I hope to hell Obama is not that stupid.
BUT, it is apparent by they way the Gov. said, “They only offered Appreciation”, that they were given a chance to make an offer.
Why didn’t Obama Denounce this when this happened is what I want to KNOW? He did not have to wait until the indictment to make it public!

Posted by: ajax | December 10, 2008, 3:53 pm 3:53 pm

When any republican was arrested or under investigation, the leftwingers for 8 years would try to connect it all to Bush.
Now a guy in Obama’s own backyard is in trouble and everyone is saying Obama has NO DIRT on his hands.

I’m not saying that. I would just like to see some evidence, ANY evidence, before concluding that a person is as evil as you seem to think he is.
As for Bush, if some idiots unfairly attacked him, why does that make you want to be an unfair idiot too?

Some corrupt Republicans were connected to Bush but mostly republicans who were arrested or under investigation just showed what a corrupt party the GOP is vs any connection to Bush.

Pffftt…are you joking? It would have been a torpedo in he side of his campaign. Do you think he’s an idiot? No, he’s brilliant. And he handled it accordingly…let the investigation run it’s course. It wasn’t his investigation, anyway.

Posted by: Goddard W. Bolt | December 10, 2008, 4:00 pm 4:00 pm

ajax – being Obama’s right hand man made the call to the FBI it would seem Obama made the right moves by staying clear of the investigation. Obama has other pressing more important problems to deal with like the economy. It wouldn’t do anyone any good for Obama to get himself tied up in this investigation when he has other work to do. Directing Emanuel to deal with it was the correct move for the President Elect.

dan, thanks for the answer. I agree with you a great deal. However, the same descriptions could be used for people on the left. Many do not know the details and the agendas and they are making decisions based on emotions. Because it is an ongoing investigation?
I guess a denouncement within 24 hours of the indictment being announced is horrible.
Here’s Bush on the middle of Ted Stevens corruption trial this summer
“The United States military has had no better supporter and stronger friend than Senator Ted Stevens,” Bush said. “Thank you for coming, Senator.”
White House Press Secretary Dana Perino called Stevens’ participation in the president’s appearance “absolutely appropriate.”

This morning on GMA, I watched a discussion between Diane Sawyer and George Stephanopoulos about the comments made by David Axelrod and Mr. Obama in regards to conversations with Gov. Blagojevich concerning the vacant senate seat. Obama claims he had no contact with the govenor or his office and that (we / I) was not aware of what was happening. Axelrod said he knew a conversation took place between Blagojevich and Obama and that names had been discussed to fill the position. Stephanopoulos then reports that Axelrod put out a statement that he “misspoke” about the conversation between the Illinois politicians. Had that been Carl Rove who misspoke about an issue that contradicted G.W. Bush, George S. would have dissected that statement like a high school biology project. Instead, George S. glossed over the comment with banter about Mr. Obama’s stammering over the use of a couple of pronouns. This is a blatant example of media bias to prop up their liberal agenda. The apostle George ignores the lies and coverups to protect his messiah. Mr. Axelrod “misspoke” about something he said he knew? Sounds like a lie to me.

Really…did you actually laugh out loud? No, you didn’t. But anyway, “it’s way too early to say Obama is not criminally involved?” Usually people are afforded the benefit of the doubt on the “criminal” thing until they’re…y’know…actually accused of something. It’s amusing to watch, since that’s not the media’s job.

Oh, So Obama Didn’t Discuss His Senate Seat With Blagojevich?
Do you swear to lie, obfuscate and talk
out of both sides of your mouth?
Barack Obama was quick to deny ever meeting with Rod Blagojevich to discuss his vacated Senate seat, yesterday, even quickly tossing David Axelrod under the bus.
Well, what do you know, thanks to a sharp-eyed commenter, we have this curious item dated November 8. In some circles, this is known as evidence.
QUINCY, IL — Now that Barack Obama will be moving to the White House, his seat in the U.S. Senate representing Illinois will have to be filled.
Obama met with Governor Rod Blagojevich earlier this week to discuss it. Illinois law states that the governor chooses that replacement. There’s already been speculation about his selection…from Congressman Jesse Jackson, Junior to Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs Director Tammy Duckworth.
Hmmm.
So it appears Obama is lying. Does anyone in the media care to question him about this?
Uhhh, I doubt it.
Meanwhile, Obama has called on his good friend to resign. Way to get out ahead of the pack, Barry.
President-elect Barack Obama is calling for the Illinois governor to resign.
Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs says the president-elect agrees with other prominent politicians in Illinois and elsewhere that “under the current circumstances, it is difficult for the governor to effectively do his job and serve the people of Illinois.”
He then signaled a series of hand gestures experts translated as “shut the hell up, whatever you do, and I’ll pardon you on my way out.”
In other developments, it’s reported Jesse Jackson Jr. was the one allegedly offering Blagojevich a bribe. Shocking, isn’t it?

Now we find out Axelrod criticized Fitzgerald back in 2005 and praised the way Blago did business!
Lol.
This just keeps getting better and better.
I haven’t been watching TV or listening to talk radio since Obama won, but it’s going to be fun getting back to it now with all the scandal going on. : )

Americans need to know one thing about Chicago:
You don’t get the nomination as a democrat for ANYTHING in Chicago, unless you’ve proven you’re willing to play the game, so to speak. That includes Obama.
Keep that in mind.

Posted by: Chicago My Kind of Town | December 10, 2008, 4:47 pm 4:47 pm

You have to be dirty to win the nomination as a democrat for anything in Chicago because otherwise you may rat on the other dems once you get in office. They can’t risk that.
Got it? Good. Keep that in mind when worshipping Obama.

After Gov. Ryan and his corruption, there was a great deal of enthusiasm and hope for Blagojevich when he was first elected. This soon soured. By year three of his first term, he was at odds with his own party, including the Speaker of the IL House, Obama, Mayor Daley. He only got re-elected because of widespread dissatisfaction with the IL Republicans. Before the end of his first year of the second term, he alienated almost everyone. He has been a pariah and an outcast. Ineffective. Incompetent. Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn tried to get a recall bill passed to remove him. It has been widely known that the Feds were scrutinizing Blago closely. He has been ostracized. No Democrat with half a brain has gone anywhere near him, including Obama. Blago’s approval rating, even before his arrest, was lower than Bush’s. 12%.

Goddard W. Bolt:
So now Blago was elected by Republicans? You can’t be serious. You do know that BO offerd to campaign for him in 2006 and even spoke for him at the State Fair, right? Sorry, this scandal belongs to democrats. Nice try though.

Posted by: rodidog | December 10, 2008, 5:05 pm 5:05 pm

roidog: you totally misunderstood. This scandal belongs to ONE democrat–Rod Blagojevich! Just like the previous scandal belonged to one Republican–George Ryan. And where did I say that Republicans elected Blago????
He got re-elected because A) he posed himself as this great populist with the iinterests of the citizenry at heart and 2) because the Republicans ran a real whack-job, Judy Barr Topinka. My point is that Republicans AND Democrats alike in Illinois hate this guy!

Posted by: Goddard W. Bolt | December 10, 2008, 5:10 pm 5:10 pm

and you are wrong about the State Fair. He was ostracized at the Fair. Almost no one showed up for Blago on Democrat Day at the Fair. He was excluded from the convention last summer–the only elected Dem. governor not to have an opportunity to deliver a speech. This guy is and has been a political lepper in Illinois, long before his arrest.

“The only way his name is attached to this was Fitz saying he is in no way implicated and that Blago is on a wire saying the Obama wouldn’t play ball. Next.”
Yeah, I smirked out loud- because of stuff like this. Transparently trying to change the subject.
I am not saying Obama is guilty- but I am saying it smells and it is way too early to be concluding that PEBO is off scott free.
Fitzgerald didnt say that Obama is “in no way implicated”. Get it straight. He was careful to say that Obama is not named in the complaint. Which is true- its not the same to say that he might not be involved or be part of some future incitement. The only thing we do know if that is Obama and his staff is not being accused in *this* complaint.
Here is what Fitz really said:
“MR. FITZGERALD: Okay. I’m not going to speak for what the president-elect was aware of. We make no allegations that he’s aware of anything, and that’s as simply as I can put it.”
and later
“MR. FITZGERALD: Okay. I’m not going to go down anything that’s not in the complaint.
And what I simply said before is, I’m not going to — I have enough trouble speaking for myself. I’m not going to try and speak in the voice of a president or a president-elect.
So I simply pointed out that if you look at the complaint, there’s no allegation that the president-elect — there’s no reference in the complaint to any conversations involving the president-elect or indicating that the president-elect was aware of it. And that’s all I can say.”

Posted by: BertieW | December 10, 2008, 5:15 pm 5:15 pm

A lot of Republican supporters here are engaging in the most extreme “wishful thinking” in trying to attach Obama to this.
You all as so bitter about your village idiot and his erstwhile but rejected successor that you just hope and pray that some event will come along and save the day and “save” America from having a black Democrat in the White House.
I wonder: could it perhaps have been Obama or his staff that called up the FBI and said, “Can you believe this guy, trying to strong-arm the President Elect?” I think that without SOME outside nudge, the FBI probably WOULD have waited until they had evidence that a bribe had at least been agreed to!

Right. He’d be a lunatic to go anywhere near Obama outside of the very defined scope of this complaint. I figured that was a given that that is what I was talking about. I’m not aware of any other complaints. Although, it sounds like one might be coming from the nominee behind door #5.
All signs point to Obama being clean on this. Which will be pretty impressive if you think about it.

It read to me like you were trying to have dem’s weasle out of taking responsibility for this guy. Since Obama campaigned for him at the State fair in 2006 and offered to campaign more, if the Gov. thought it would be helpful, does this means you think Obama has half a brain?

In the Summer of 2006, then-U.S. Sen. Obama backed Blagojevich even though there were serious questions at the time about Blago’s hiring practices.
At the time, numerous state agencies had had records subpoenaed, with U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald telling authorities he was looking into “very serious allegations of endemic hiring fraud” with a “number of credible witnesses.”
In an interview with the Chicago Daily Herald in July 2006, then-Sen. Obama said, “I have not followed closely enough what’s been taking place in these investigations to comment on them. Obviously I’m concerned about reports that hiring practices at the state weren’t, at times, following appropriate procedures. How high up that went, the degree at which the governor was involved, is not something I’m going to speculate on.
“If I received information that made me believe that any Democrat had not been acting in the public interest, I’d be concerned,” Obama said.
That said, Mr. Obama said, “If the governor asks me to work on his behalf, I’ll be happy to do it.”
Apparently the governor did. At the Illinois State Fair in August 2006, Obama spoke on Blagojevich’s behalf.
“We’ve got a governor in Rod Blagojevich who has delivered consistently on behalf of the people of Illinois,” Obama told the crowd.

Matt writes, “Anyone else think that Obama and his team have handled the scandal incredibly poorly? They’ve been a step behind the case at every turn. Is that because they know more than letting on and actually had a hand in turning Blago in? Or have they simply lost their campaign smarts?”
================================
They’ve handled in brilliantly. They’re actually a step ahead because they already know who said what and to whom. They also know that Obama had nothing to do with case. What they’re probably hoping is that the Republicans can’t resist the temptation to employ the same “Rove” politics that cost them SEVERAL elections. In the end, they come off as bitter losers who aren’t interested in addressing the biggest financial crisis since the Great Depression. I guess they haven’t figured out that Independents, not Democrats or Republicans DECIDED the election and that they don’t FOLLOW or BELIEVE in “Rove” tactics. Pretty silly if you ask me.

“Right. He’d be a lunatic to go anywhere near Obama outside of the very defined scope of this complaint. I figured that was a given that that is what I was talking about. I’m not aware of any other complaints.”
I dont know why he’d be a ‘lunatic’. This is what he has that is a baked case right now. This is what is actionable at this time. Candidates 1-6 may also have complaints against them in the future, although since they arent as high profile as Blago the government may used seal inditements.
We really dont know what else there is. This complaint is based on wiretaps from November 3-13. Then there is a gap until December 4th. We really dont know what is in that 3 week gap but it may form the basis for other prosecutions.
“All signs” do not point to Obama being clean. Lying about talking to people and everyone suddenly ‘misspeaking’ is not a sign that you are clean. Maybe he is guilty. Maybe is involved and nothing can be proven. Maybe he never counteroffered Blago and is innocent. Too early to know.
BTW- Michelle is on the board of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs and she was on Board of TreeHouse Foods, a Walmart supplier, making $50/yr until Obama started making political hay attacking them.

If Obama was not involved then what was he talking about last Sunday when Brokaw asked how he felt about Caroline Kennedy as Senator from NY? He responded that he respected Kennedy hugely, but that he wasn’t getting involved in NY politics because he had enough problems with politics in Illinois. Could the problems be that the bidding war with the governor was getting out of hand?
Of course he would need to have a conversation about the governor… at least to tell him when he is resigning. And there is interest in your old seat. Apparently Emanuel was also having conversations with the Gov about filling *his* House (the 5th Congressional District) seat. Blago wanted help in raising $10M to $15M for some PAC and according to the complaint
“when he asks me for the fifth CD thing I want it to be in his head.””

Isn’t the timing interesting. Fitzgerald’s been trying to get the Governor for a long time. All of a sudden now he just happens to bug the Governor’s house and office. Must have been quite a tip about that senate seat. Didn’t say the Governor ACTUALLY got any money out of these recent allegations. Isn’t that where the crime is? Question: What is it called when delegates and super delegates ACTUALLY get money for their campaigns or PROMISED positions in a new administration if the presidential candidate gets their vote? Can you say selling votes and positions?

Blago soliciting bribes from
whom? What they have on tape
are his conversations with his
advisors.
No individual or organization
has brought solicitation of
bribery charges against him.
We do not see any names from
whom he solicited bribes in
all the articles and stories
that have appeared in the

He does not appear to be any
wealthier now than he was
before he became governor.
He has known for quite a while

Other than his vulgar talk

there does not appear to be
a legal case against him.

Dems, no I am sure as heck not prevy to every conversation my boss has, guess what word gets around because people talk and I ask questions. When job positions become open in my area I diffentely ask who may get them what their duties will be and where the person came from. So if silly me does that I find it hard to believe that Obama didn’t ask the Gov who he was thinking about having replace him or tell the Gov who he thought should replace him. Even if you give Obama the benifit of the doubt about not speaking directly to the gov about replacements I am sure someone from his transition team did and then we are suppose to believe that they informed Obama of nothing that was going on?
