Obama Vows Openness on Blago Contacts

ABC News’ Rick Klein Reports: President-elect Barack Obama changed course Thursday and vowed to have his staff "gather the all the facts" about contacts members of his team had with embattled Gov. Rod Blagojevich about his open Senate seat — and said he’d share those details with the press and the public.

This marks a shift by Obama, who in his previous public comments indicated that he wouldn’t comment beyond saying that he had not personally been in touch with Blagojevich, D-Ill.

The president-elect said he is confident that a full accounting of contacts between his aides and the governor’s office will show that no one involved in his transition acted inappropriately.

"What I’m absolutely certain about is that our office had no involvement with any deal-making around my Senate seat. That I’m absolutely certain of," Obama said. "That would be a violation of everything this campaign is about, and that’s not how we do business."

The president-elect also said, "I have not been contacted by any federal officials. And we have not been interviewed by them."

Obama cited the wiretap transcripts which included Blagojevich making vulgar references to Obama’s refusal to cut a deal.

"We were not, I think, perceived by the governor’s office as amenable to any deal-making," Obama said in a televised news conference. "I won’t quote back some of the things that were said about me.  This is a family program, I know."

Obama said he has ordered his staff to track down any records or conversations members of his presidential transition staff had with the governor’s office. "We’ll have those in the next few days, and we’ll present them," he said.

Obama also pronounced himself "appalled and disappointed" by the allegations leveled against Blagojevich, and called on Blagojevich to resign. "The public trust has been violated," he said.

"All I can do is read what was in the transcripts, like the rest of you have read it, and shake my head," Obama said.

Obama has come under increased pressure to reveal more details about his team’s contacts with Blagojevich’s office in the wake of Tuesday’s criminal complaint, filed by the U.S. attorney’s office in Chicago.

In an interview with Chicago Tribune and Los Angeles Times reporters conducted Tuesday, Obama repeated his assertion that he has "not discussed the Senate seat with the governor at any time," but he wouldn’t or couldn’t say the same about his staffers.

"Let me stop you there because, as I said out there, it’s an ongoing investigation," Obama said when asked whether any top aides were in touch with Blagojevich or his chief of staff. "I think it would be inappropriate for me to, you know, remark on the situation beyond the facts that I know. And that’s the fact that I didn’t discuss this issue with the governor at all."

Why wasn’t that sufficient?

Clearly individuals in Obama’s inner circle had contacts with Blagojevich’s office about Obama’s potential replacements — even if all they said was that "they’re not willing to give me anything except appreciation," as Blagojevich said in a taped conversation cited in the criminal complaint filed Tuesday.

Even leaving aside those references in the complaint, common sense would dictate that Obama’s Chicago-heavy team — which includes people who have worked directly for Blagojevich in prominent roles — would have some contact with the Democratic governor of Illinois, particularly on the subject of the replacement for Obama’s own Senate seat.

Those contacts are now at the center of a federal criminal probe that alleges that Blagojevich essentially put Obama’s Senate seat up for sale. If the Obama folks refused to play that game — as the complaint strongly suggests — wouldn’t that be a worthwhile tidbit for the public to know about the incoming White House team?

One hint as to who was in touch with Blagojevich comes in Thursday’s New York Times, in a report that identifies incoming White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel — who took over Blagojevich’s old House seat — as "among the few people in Mr. Obama’s circle who occasionally spoke to Mr. Blagojevich."

"[Emanuel] declined to answer questions on Wednesday, waving off a reporter who approached him as he walked across Capitol Hill," Peter Baker and Jeff Zeleny write. "A Democrat familiar with Illinois politics and the Obama transition, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said there probably were calls between the Blagojevich and Obama camps about the Senate seat. It was not clear if any calls were recorded by federal agents, who had tapped the governor’s phones."

Obama initially cited the "ongoing investigation" in saying he wouldn’t detail those contacts.

But US Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald said nothing at Tuesday’s press conference to suggest that providing information about those contacts would jeopardize the investigation — an inquiry that, based just on the criminal complaint, seems to have caught Blagojevich as red-handed as they come.

As Marc Ambinder points out, in his Atlantic blog: "Whereas, in the Valerie Plame investigation, President Bush may have been tangentially involved, or at least had an inkling that subordinates of his were involved, Obama does not have the same constraints. There is no legal reason why he can’t comment, speculate, or engage in idle rumors on this whole turn of events. This isn’t to suggest that Obama should make off-the-cuff remarks about this or not take it seriously . . . it’s just that there doesn’t seem to be the same (veneer of a) legal justification for not doing so."

ABC News’ Mark Mooney contributed to this report.

If this isn’t how BO does business, would a reporter please ask him how his wife (Ms.BO) got her position on the board that she just resigned from?

Uh oh. So what if this is traced back to Obama and it turns out he KNEW that the senate seat was up for sale, and did not alert authorities? I would think that would be reason enough to remove him from presidency. Would he still get sworn in? Would we have to impeach him? We want to know.

Sir Lanky wonders if we may need to impeach him? We didn’t impeach a moron that killed something like 5000 Americans and hundreds of thousands of Iraqies. I think Obama is pretty much impeachment free unless he starts killing kittens in the rose garden for kicks.

Barack Obama was in a meeting for energy policies with Al Gore and Joe Biden, did you expect him to halt his historical day and stop to “comment” on a case under investigation? Which “once again” historically was tainted by another “crooke” politician!

Hey Sir Lanky,
Everyone including the US Attorney said that Obama himself had no contact and is not involved in the investigation at all and if you had listened to Blago’s tapes, he curses out Obama so doesn’t sound like there was a working relationship atall. So sorry to bust your bubble. Oh oh. LOL!

Everyone of you Obama bashers is just foaming at the mouth HOPING that there is some kind of delicate web in any way connecting him to scandal. Lucky for us Obama delivers time and again and is true to his character and remains blemishless. Smurfcheck and others like you: Here’s what you give away about yourself with your comments. Clinical psychologists will tell you that you tend to project your own faults on to others. People who are basically honest assume others are too unless proven otherwise. However, people who would lie or cheat tend to think everyone else does as well. Get the point? People who assume everyone is a crook or liar typically function that way themselves.

for such a supposedly smart guy, Obama must be totally oblivious to the views and activities his associates in Chicago. How does a guy who went to Harvard not know that Ayers is a unrepentant terrorist, Rezko was a criminal, Wright was an America hating racist, and the governor was a crook?

Posted by: brian | December 11, 2008, 12:08 pm 12:08 pm

Some people are so bitter about Obama winning that they will cling to anything. I don’t know what more people want from Obama, he wasn’t interested in playing the governor’s game yet people want to smear him.

Obama is a perceptive lawyer and he knew all about Rezko, Wright, Ayers and the Governor. He needs to drop the innocent act and just admit he is part of the Chicago political machine.

Posted by: brannigon1 | December 11, 2008, 12:11 pm 12:11 pm

To those who unquestioned Obama’s possible ties political corruption, the issue that those who doubt his innocence isn’t about how he won the presidency but if Barack had to “pay” to gain his senate seat in 2006. It’s highly unlikely that Blagojevich just started this scam after Obama’s win and it’s been said that Blagojevich has been under investigation since 2004 but only recently wiretapped.

Posted by: notsodumb | December 11, 2008, 12:18 pm 12:18 pm

If one of Obama’s aides did contact Blago without his knowledge, it does not bode well for what will happen behind his back when he gets in the white house. However, I cannot believe that he did not know that Emanuel had contacted Blago about the seat. So, either he is ignorant and not in charge, or he is trying to cover up the truth. Unfortunately, we will probably never know, since the media gives him a free pass on EVERYTHING he does. At any rate, he shouldn’t be allowed to get away with the “All I know is that I didn’t have contact with the governor” excuse. I mean, doesn’t his chief of staff speak for him?

Posted by: KMB | December 11, 2008, 12:19 pm 12:19 pm

Are you complainers that blinded by the shear hate for Obama that you can’t see straight? I mean this investigation of Blag during the election as well. If there was any hint, stinch, or smell that Obama was involved in something shady the FBI would have blown the whistle long ago. This is going down now because they have collaberated enough factual evidence against Blag to bring him down. If someone on Obama’s team had anything to do with this it will come out and I am sure Obama will do the right thing and replace them. This again will be used as an attack to bring a bad light upon our new President who has not even had a chance to be sworn in.
I know it pleases you naysayers but I truly believe once again that your witch hunt will end fruitless once again.

Also, Ayers has never been arrested for that, is a respected author and educator and was given a Man of the Year award. 3) Wright does NOT hate America, only some of the bad things the American government has done. 4) Blago was just arrested this week.

Easy to build castles in thin air, huh!” Sorry dummy, but it isn’t Obama’s job to run Blago’s life for him. Obama can not control every politician in this country. He is NOT responsible for something the governor did just because they come from the same state. Now, tell us all about Scooter who did his dirty work under direct orders from Bush. “If one of Obama’s aides did contact Blago without his knowledge, it does not bode well for what will happen behind his back when he gets in the white house.” — Obviously there WAS some contact between Obama’s staff and the governor’s staff, otherwise, why would the governor be upset that Obama would only offer “appreciation” ? There had to have been some contact – maybe Obama didn’t know about it or maybe he wouldn’t go along with it, but he’s lying about there being “absolutely no” contact and the governor’s reaction to Obama’s no-deal stance is proof of it.

Clinton was a popular president, but like all politicians, he was a skilled liar. One thing about all successful politicians (regardless of party) – they know how to tell us what we want to hear, and usually, we easily believe the lies.

Second, Kathy, your quote “You can tell which posters above are from the South (the ones that can’t spell, use grammar, and can’t stand Obama)” is rude and uncalled for. Spelling and grammar are a result of lack of education, usually caused by a vicious cycle of poverty. Typos, on the other hand, can happen to anyone. Rudeness and spite can be controlled by every one, whether you’re educated or not, rich or poor. There are just as many uneducated poor in the North as there are in the South because poverty and underfunded schools are a national problem, not a Southern-only problem.

Good observation Steve. I am still waitning for a (D) to pop out somewhere.
But it obviosly far deeper then that. I saw a story on ABC today titled “Democrats Unite Against Gov”.
Can you imagine the headline if it were republicans?? It would be something along the lines of…
“Republican Party Falling Apart?” or
“Republican Party Deep In Corruption”.
These “journalists” are pathetic. They should be called lobbyists from now on.

Now who is the one that wanted to capitalize off this.It was the governor right? Now it is rather unfortunate that he is the governor of Obama’s state but let’s get real. Do you think this is the only governor involved in crooked business?I am pretty sure there are more, but this is the one that got caught. Also what would motivate an investigation into this in the first place? Was it really an unpolitically biased investigation? I hope Obama wasn’t involved either, but if he was that would be unfortunate. The fact is it is still an investigation and you moronic haters need to chill until all facts have been presented and proven with due dilligence.Seems that some of you just have to prove that Obama is the worst. Is this your main goal in life? if we’re gonna guilt by party nowadays we should just say all republicans are greedy, care only about the rich, want to keep us in iraq, keep gas prices high, maintain a strangle hold on the middle class and below, and have innapprpriate sexual encounters

For once we have an honest President Elect and the Repubes are trying to bark. Just like the Repubes, barking up the wrong tree with no evidence. Let’s see, Duke Cunningham, Sen Stevens, Sen “Tapshoe” Craig, Abrahms, Florida’s Foley Follies, Bush lying about WMD, Rumsfeld on our Army, boy the Rebubes need to clean up their act.
I am so glad that in just over month the Democrats will be in control. Repubes, you lost, we won, get over it!

Most of these comments are from the old defeated right wing nuts who can’t get used to the idea that Barack Obama is now really their president-elect. So what’s left to do? Try to relive the campaign and imagine ways, like impeachment, to get rid of this person they so easily vilify. But hope continues to win out over fear. As president-elect Obama has already given more new direction to the economic disaster that he inherited and done more to repair the image of the US around the world than anyone could have imagined.

Disgruntled Taxpayer posted “I seem to remember the Clinton presidency ending in disgrace” Clinton lied about getting a **** *** from Monica. He was wrong for doing both (lying and getting you know what). But to me, the Republican party wasting $50 million to get him for Something, anything just so they could grab power is a million times WORSE and far more disgraceful. They did what they did for the good of their party, American be damned. Now THAT is disgraceful.

“Obama vows openness on Blago contacts”. What a joke!! Hussein will not recognize openness if it hits him in the face. He and his entire possie (Valerie Jarret, Ayers, Blago, Stroger, Rezko….on and on) are deep in corruption. It is pure corruption that got Hussein to where he is today. And why is Blago so mad about the treatment he is getting from Hussein and his team now? Of course, he is looking for payback!! If he did not do his portion of favors for Hussein he would not be expecting anything in return. Why are we even speculating about this? Isn’t clear as day that he is upset because Hussein used him and is now turning his back? Like all the other relationships of Hussein……….he uses them and then throws them under the bus (grandma, Wright, Farrakhan, Rezko, Ayers, Khalidi………I did not know about any of these people). What a corrupt liar!! It’s deep in his African DNA……he can’t help himself! Can you name a single leader coming from the African continent who was not corrupt?? He is just another! God help us.

Let me put it this way: If Obama discovers that Rahm is in any way involved in this mess, he’ll cut ties immediately. Obama will not let any of his previous Chicago allifiations affect his presidency, including any and all future prospective appointments to his White House staff. If Rahm isn’t clean in this, he’ll be discarded. But, in the future, Obama absolutely has to severe all political ties to his home state of Illinois once and for all. That state is just plain corrupt.

But I’m glad he did because if he didn’t, nobody would have ever known. After all, the political party of Blago is a top government secret, so top secret that if THEY know that YOU know, you will have to be killed! Like super super secret that will NEVER had gotten out if Steve didn’t say it. Of course ABC could have been sneaky like Fox News and put a (R) after Blago’s name like they have done to others in the past.

Hmmm – wasn’t Al Capone also from Chicago and Elliot Ness put him away? So isn’t Blagojevich (and/or Jessie Jackson, Sr/Jr) and Patrick Fitzgerald kind of similar? Although Al Capone was a ‘ganster’ and Blago is a ‘governor’ it sounds like there was a lot of corruption going on there in general. Geez Illinois, do you really want this swept under the rug and the Lt. Governor to make the appointment to the Senate seat? I would think you would be jumping up and down DEMANDING the right to vote about now. After all, if these guy’s are all corrupt (as are their buddies) do you REALLY want someone potentially corrupt making the call or would your rather use your own constitution given voice to stand up and make the best decision possible for representation.

Then, as the UK gentleman yesterday referred to her “Huffington Puffington” (the socialite), true intellectual discourse must be measured on how acceptable you are to Hollywood elitism? As an average, college educated, US citizen “worker bee”; it frightens me that some of our electorate considers Hollywood’s uneducated, over-indulged consumers to be credible policy wonks (been there/done that with Pres. Clinton). If I were our Pres. elect, I would definitely steer clear of Chi politics and Hollywood. They’re both quagmires for him (even if not of his own making).

My thing? I’ve lived (NOT VISITED) in Asia and Europe (specifically Philippines, Japan, Spain and Italy) and am amused by all the posters who claim to be informed as to what the world thinks about Americans and the US because they read sites (Huffington, etal.) on the Internet. Though I applaud anyone who chooses to read (rather than watch TV) to become better informed, I do not believe that a site run by a socialite can be deemed a “better source” of intellectual repartee then any other site. Your tone yesterday and today has been condescending,(yesterday you were plain rude as were many others), to those who DID not agree with your conclusions and the sites you referred to as being pertinent. My personal opinion only. I tend to prefer my dialogue with people I disagree with to be lacking of name calling. You know “paper trained”!

Obama sat in Jeremiah Wright”s church for 20 years and says he didn”t know about Wright”s views.
Obama worked with Bill Ayers on government-funded projects but says he barely knows him.
Obama and Rezko bought adjacent real estate lots on the same day which ended up as a financial advantage to Obama, but Obama says he didn”t know much about him. ..and on and on.
Obama worked on Blagojevich”s first governor election campaign as an advisor…and now he is distancing himself from that relationship with Blagojevich.

I realized you will probably get critized for whatever you mention, but I would like to know. I have been an independent my whole life, don’t really like either party, but seldom fine anything in common with third parties either. I prefer a variety of view points that are close to the center and grounded in common sense. I very much dislike extreme positions from any individual or group. There is no silver bullet and everyone has flaws. The only site I like a lot is FactCheck and government sites for court rulings and budget info. Thanks in advance.

There is no evidence whatsoever that casts doubt on the President-elect’s statement that he had no conversations with Gov. Blagoyevich about his former Senate seat, and it is perfectly reasonable for his transition staff to take a few days to develop a list of any phone conversations between his staff and that of the governor. Until the latter is disclosed, everything written above this comment is mere speculation, unsubstantiated rumor, or outright invention. Once again, the news media are focusing massive resources on a story that will be insignificant in 10 days.

Maybe it’s me – I think it corresponds with who is getting convicted without evidence. Before the presidential elections started, Bush was getting most of the convictions without evidence. That is the problem with political life in America. One candidate is always right and one is always wrong. There is no middle ground where you see strengths and weakness of both sides.

The term “dip stick” proves my point that there are very few people trying to have civil and constructive dialogue. What intelligent point, did referring to someone with the above phrase, make for you? Did it satisfy the need to belittle someone who doesn’t agree with you? Do you need to stoop to the levels of the other nasty commentators? I have proved my point…

I’m sorry, didn’t you also say? Just a guy in my neighborhood?
Ayers helped Obama, then a junior lawyer at a minor law firm, get appointed chairman of the multi-million dollar Chicago Annenberg Challenge grant. In the fall of that same year, 1995, Ayers and his wife, Weatherwoman Bernardine Dohrn, helped blaze Obama’s path to political power with a fundraiser in their Chicago home. In short, Ayers had the means, the motive, the time, the place and the literary ability to jumpstart Obama’s career.
Obama and Ayers served together on the board of a Chicago charity, and in the mid-1990s when Obama first ran for office, Ayers hosted a meet-the-candidate session for Obama at his home.
Ayers is a university professor and a member of Chicago’s intellectual establishment. Forty years ago he was a member of the Weather Underground, a radical group that claimed responsibility for a series of bombings, including explosions at the Pentagon and U.S. Capitol.
Ayers was a fugitive for years with his wife, fellow radical Bernadine Dohrn. But after surrendering in 1980, the charges against Ayers were dropped because of prosecutorial misconduct.

This whole campaign was a manipulation by Saul Alinsky’s Best Student The obama thuggery admitted too! Obama’s supporters appear to be using — and abusing — a tool allowing them to “flag” questions as “inappropriate” to remove all questions. They manipulated the campaign, Obama spent years as director of the Developing Communities Project, which operated using Alinsky’s strategies, and was involved with two other Alinsky-oriented entities, Acorn and Project Vote. This has been a huge suppressing movement in the Obama camp
